she is the worst. doesnt explain the work and makes it real boring. almost everyone in the class drop this course. doesnt give out A's mostly C's. dont take her.
You have to put work into this class if you want to do well. She moves through the material quickly but she does arrange for tutors if you need one. She's a nice lady both in and out of class.
PAY ATTENTION IN HER CLASS and you will do fine. I found her class lectures more informative than the reading assignments. She truly touches on everything that will be on her exams.
I hope administration reads the comments I made on the semster evaluation for the professor, for a basic economic class, her class is full of agony. The last comment entered on here is absolutely correct, must students drop her class, that's a disgrace.
Not an easy class but definitely worth taking. I think you have to have a genuine interest in economics to take this class. She does her best to help u understand the material and she'll arrange tutoring sessions outside of class if u need it. Shes a really sweet person overall.
At first I thought I was going to fail the class but I got a B- and that was because I went to go and talk to her, she can be helpful. Tests are hard but she is a fair grader.
she is very hard. She does not explain herself clearly
this class was insane. She couldnt keep control of the class, there were near fights half the time, ppl walked out of her class numerous times, everytime i asked for tutoring she never emailed me back. She didnt teach the class fairly she put her own rhetoric ahead of the course.
tough, tough class. she's nice tough
I once wrote about this professor on the 4th of january, but now I have had a her again and this time it was a nightmare. She is extremly unfair, she never replies to email, and she teaches the class as if we already understand economics, say clear of her. She is unclear, unorganized, and just unfair.
Don't even bother buying the text books - she told us we'd need both of them and never did she reference them or have us read part of them for homework or anything. All the info you can get from her lectures if you can keep it all organized. She's very "scatter brain" but nice and hates Bush.
I took this class as my elective and boy do i regret it. She told us to buy the books and we did not even USE THEM! She doesnt know how to explain and she just confuses the hell out of you! I got a B so if you talk to her, you will be spared a bad grade and shes very nice.
she is so unorganized, she can jump from one topic to another. she wont remember where she left off. we had a take home quiz, and i saw we only had a B on it, i dont think she even read or grade them. the book is useless, it only give u a general idea of wat she going to teach. we took the mid-term 2 weeks before the final, it was so off da syllabl
she gives a lot of information. short answer tests. all info from class notes, don't really need the book. no extra credit and 5 homework assignmets all semester.
Worst professor Ive experienced at John Jay. She has no idea what shes doing. She clearly knows the material, but has no idea how to teach. No peope skills.Forgets where she left off or even what she was doing 5 min ago. I love economics, and was excited about taking it, but had to drop the class. Its very hard and confusing. Avoid at all costs!!!
How horrible this class was! I had no idea what was going on. She was very disorganized. She is also very weird and seems totally liberal. She dresses like she's something out of the sixties. No clue and no sense of direction. I had to drop the class. Waste of money and time!
I hate this ****.....
RUN!!!!!!!! If by some means that you have to take her...try not to and wait for the next semester. This professor is the worst! She's very smart but couldn't help you if you were learning you ABCs.
She makes you buy the book only because she gets kickback it. No textbook use at all. She is disorganized and lost most of the time. Her tests and her teachings don't match. one of the worst teachers I have dealt with. Avoid at all costs.
This professor is scatter-brain and unorganizied. She says textbooks are mandatory yet we never used them! She goes off topic a lot and makes excuses when she doent know the answer. She requires you to attend class but she forgets to show up herself. She gives a 100 question review but only 20 of the questions are on the test.
I did very well in the class only because I'm great at Economics. 99.99999% of other people will find this class difficult. If you get her, drop the class and NEVER LOOK BACK!!! Possibly the worst teacher at John Jay.
professor arlene geiger is the worst. she's so unorganized, out of place, a mess, and is very bad at clarifying the materials/lessons.
This professor may seem loony, but she teaches economics sooooo well, take her, seriously, she seems strange in the beginning but into the semester you will find she makes a lot of sense and knows what she is talking about. She answers questions but study for the tests
if you are looking for a reason to shoot yourself, take her class! she hates to be wrong, and don't answer her questions cause she will humiliate you. Possibly the worst teacher at John Jay. We started with a class of 42 and by mideterms week we had 9 people in the class. if you don't understand her lesson it's too bad cause she'll move on anyway.

I've been counting students and they seemed to have disapered! At first there were 48 and i see we only have 12 students left.Trust me when I say that the ones who stayed was because they really needed the credits to graduate or were on scholarship. Worst teacher I've ever met! no clue on how to teach. Her exams are hard as hell! all fill ins!
THE WORST PROFESSOR IN THE COLLEGE...DON'T RECOMMEND ANYONE TAKING HER AS A PROFESSOR...EVERYONE THEY SAID IS TRUE....
Maybe she's good at teaching a PHD class but someone needs to tell her THIS IS 101! she hates when students don't understand (which is always) and she's a big **** to those who ask questions. Take her class if you want to kill your GPA!!!!!!!

This is the worst professor I have ever had. All the comments about her are correct. Please do yourself a favor and tell your friends to avoid her at ALL COSTS!!!!!
The worst professor I have ever had. Does not allow anyone to ask any questions and humiliates students who do. I am now retaking this class with another professor,,,,PLEASE take my advice and do yourself a huge favor, avoid her at all costs!!!!
You must be able to adapt. Geiger is an average professor, but will push you to understand the material. She grades on a curve. If you are the best (or close to it) in the class you have no problem. Read the material. I received an A-. The highest in the class.
she is ok for me. i can understand her explanations.
This professor only has a job because she is friends with the Dept head (Hofmann). Neither one of them should have a job. If you go to talk to Hofmann about how bad geiger is, Hofmann will defend geiger. You will have no chance to voice your opinion. They both need to retire!(or get FIRED)
She explains things very clearly and makes sure that you understand concepts precisely. I appreciate her enthusiasm.
Ms. Geiger challenges you to do better. You have to read and pay attention, but you will learn about the economy.
She is the best professor I had so far in jj. She is very clear there is no way you won't understand the material if u come to class and pay attention. I learned a lot in her class. Highly recommended for those who really want to learn...
The best professor so far in JJay. She is very clear and very smart. She knows her material and is very organized. If you want to have a knowledge about economics take prof. Geiger.
Prof Geiger made me interested in the economy. She makes you work but it's worth it.
You have to really pay attention and the exams are hard but you will learn
SO basically, just listen and pay attention. no powerpoints, just a lecture with a few main topics written on the board. i suggest you listen to her whole shpeal first then write down the general idea of what she was saying because she sometimes talks in convoluted cirlces and she doesn't do a recap until the next class unless you ask a question. t
I learned so much but had to work hard and take notes-notes-notes. Tests were hard but fair. Take her if you really want to learn and not just fool around.
Basically, everything you have to do is to come in class and pay really good attention to the lectures. Your notes will be sufficient to pass the tests, but you have to know them ideally and, even more important, understand what are they about. Very clear, fair, and passionate professor!
WORST PROFESSOR AT JJAY. DO NOT TAKE CARE AT ALL. I DONT KNOW WHAT THE PEOPLE BELOW ARE SAYING. BY TAKING THIS LADY, THE ONLY THING YOU WILL DO IS HURT YOUR GPA. TRUST ME ON THIS AVOID HER. HER TESTS ARE ARE ALL FILL IN'S AND THERE IS NO MULTIPLE CHOICE. BUT IF YOU WANT TO FAIL BY ALL MEANS TAKE HER.
Her introductory level class is really pushing the level of a 300 level class. it is extremely difficult to succeed especially if you dont have any prior knowledge about the economics. Old school professor and paranoid about cellphone usage in class.
Good professor but not an easy class to get A in. I am learning though.
Difficult professor, her classes are all lecture, no response. Tests are 99% Fill in and very difficult. She does not typically want any interaction from the class. Will stop lectures just if she thinks people are talking/on cell phones etc but more than once she has been wrong. Has been unable to answer some of my classes questions. Can be rude.
She's an excellent professor. Her class is mostly lecture. Do not be absent, take notes and pay attention. Do not bring or plan to use any electronic devices (cell phone, laptop, i-pad). Her tests are all fill-ins but there's nothing on them that she hasnt taught in class.
I learned alot and the class was interesting but hard. If you want to work hard it is worth it.
Not an easy grader but you learn a lot. I liked the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS she is all over the place. she asks us to buy the book and we dont even use the book. More then half of the class are falling asleep. she doesnt answer any question she just goes around the guestion avoiding. I dont think i have learned anything useful in this class.
Maybe we did too much but she helped us with it. I am glad I took this class because I understand watching the news better now.
Terrible professor. does not know how to teach at all. gives out 2 exams and one accumulative final and does not help at all w/ them. Did not learn a thing in class, had to teach myself the readings. my study guide for the final was nearly 12 pages long. WORST EVER
GREAT PROFESSOR! really knows her stuff, but you must study for midterms and final to get a good grade
Learned alot
Hard class but she taught me about the economy and I liked her class.
Lots to learn in this class, but such a horrible professor. Very old, and cannot teach. She repeats herself 50 times. She even wrote on the board with permanent marker. She was so terrible that she let us do midterm retakes. Used to love economics, and now I hate it because of her. STAY AWAY!!!! She shouldn't be teaching any more. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
FANTASTIC!!!! Enjoyed the class I watch Up with Chris now and know what is going on with the economy and never did before her class. Work hard for a good grade.
I am learning lots about the economy and readling alot. Her class is not easy but I am learning alot. I think it is Worth the hard work.
Oh dear Lord! I am currently enrolled in her ECO 101 and it kills me how a classroom full of students can become desolate once the lecture begins. BORING! She is considerate, though, to students' workload (i.e., doesn't believe in requiring a textbook because they are expensive). I don't want to be mean but is it the subject or the instructor?
Hard wrk but she is helpful . worth taking.
Not worth taking. She is incredibly dry and boring. Her tests are hard; all short answers and no multiple. Same for quizzes. DO NOT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU WANT TO HURT YOUR GPA.
GREAT
Great. Interesting. Learned mucho. Like herr unusual style.
Fascinating and a lot of work. Don't take her if you just want an easy A you have to work for it. I like her class
learned things about economy and now like to read articles she made us read
work work work was interesting not so easy
Its not an easy A but is fair. I understand things more than before her class and talk to my friends about Economics now. She's nice and will help you if you ask.
Good teacher
I liked the class
I love this class. Prof Geiger is the best.
Our class is interesting. I like the reading and her lessons. We do work together in class and that makes it easy to understand what she talks about.
Ms Geiger is the best teacher I've had at JJ. She explains everything so clear so it makes sense. We read articles from the New York Times and I will read the paper even after the class is over. Learned much and want to take more economics classes.
Good class and I'd like to take a class with Prof. Gieger again.
This professor has very rude comments to Hispanic and African American students. She does not answer any of the questions you ask in class. We received our syllabus 1 week before our midterm. She is very unorganized and expects for you to know what she is talking about. Avoid this class if you have too. She will mess up your GPA.
She is very boring and doesn't show passion. There is no textbook that needs to be brought so that is good. The online quizzes are timed, so study before you take them. I would like for her notes on the board to be more clearer. I recommend that you take notes when she talks.
No homework & no papers. Just make sure you pay attention in class or you do the readings. There is a huge curve on the midterm. In our class, if you got an A (80 or above) you could choose to tutor other students for the remainder of the semester and maintain the A in her class.
Her lectures are all over the place! I gave up on trying to understand the direction of her course during the last 2 weeks of it. Starts illustrating one concept on the board, then erases some of it and starts a new one because "we don't have enough time". I think she's got retirement fever.
Professor Geiger is great. She tried her best to make sure that all of her students understand the lecture. Everything she taught was exactly from the reading, which she posts on blackboard. I love her and would definitely take her again. If you do the readings before class, which is very short, you will do excellent. I definitely recommend her!!!!
Professor Geiger is one of the best professor at John Jay. Her lectures were amazing. No text book and if you got an A on the midterm, you don't have to take the final; she would count it twice. Her class was fun, and she makes me love economics now. She is just awesome
The professor is really nice however lectures are very confusing. Professor tries to help. There is no clear grading criteria. skipping class is not a good idea even when you are present to all class it is hard to understand the material.
The worst. This was my first semester and I had a bad experience with her. She is not there to help. Embarrased students in front of the class . You cannot even listen when she talks to the class. She is too old to be teaching. In my class almost everyone failed the midterm and final. Tough grader, tough test and quizzes. This prof. is the devil.
She's a terrible teacher. Do not take her. Spends FOREVER on one topic. She never answers the questions you ask, instead her answer addresses something completely different. Takes forever to post grades. Can be extremely rude. Tests are okay if you study a lot on your own. And I mean, A LOT. Homework is usually just reading.
She will literally spend half a class trying to catch students on their phone and trying to embarrass students she THINKS arent paying attention. If she spent more time focusing on the lesson instead of playing a high school teacher she might be able to succesfully teach a lesson. You dont see it the first few weeks but give it a month. You'll see
Lots of laughs in her class, she is funny. I learned a lot about the economy. Makes you think and read. Not an easy class.
Do not take this professor. Her readings are okay, but her lectures are not clear. She would be in the middle of sentence and then stray away to a completely different thought, making it difficult to grasp concepts. I would never recommend this teacher under any circumstance. Do not take.
Professor Geiger gives a midterm and a final and THAT's it. The material is very complex for a 101 class. Her midterm and final exam is extremely hard and all over the place. I don't recommend taking her 3 hour class, it's very BORING. She gives curves on both tests, but it doesn't do much. She's a very nice lady, but I don't recommend taking her.
Extremely difficul! Dont take her.
