Her intersting lecture makes me even look forward to attending that 8 am lecture
going to class is pretty useless
Wow! I like coming at 8:00, and not because she helps me sleep like a baby
talks fast but communicates well

Arlene is great, discussion sections are a lot of fun.
medieval history isn't my favourite topic, but she gives interesting lectures, uses overhead which is helpful in determining key points. she has a lot of energy, overall a good prof
Really interesting lectures, and very clear through use of overhead outlines. Not the usual history class where you simply learn dates of battles and names of kings - she tries to get you really thinking about the history you read. Good prof!
Do not be tricked into this course; you may sign up thinking you will learn something interesting about Medieval Europe when, in fact, this course is mostly about Christianity. Some people like Sindelar a lot. I, on the other hand, do not.
Although she's a good prof, the course is rather boring and is mostly a religious based class. Most of the history discussed is about Christianity, but not really on much else.
Wow her class is the only one i like going to so early
she's a good professor but her exams suck
Great teacher! Her classes are fun, and she shows exceptional knowledge of medieval history. I would definitely recommend her to others.
Dr Sindelar is an AWESOME prof. She's funny and witty and INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about her field. I didnt skip one single class all year because i actually really enjoyed the class. Interesting and not at all boring. An all around great prof.
An amazing professor that has made this the best course I've ever taken. I highly recommend taking anything Dr. Sindelar teaches as I am sure she could make even the dullest subject interesting.
Books are expensive and you may never even open all of them. She is a good prof however, and I do recommend her.
an okay prof, but a tough course. She covers the course from 20,000 BCE to present, world history, which means you go SO quickly. Lots of reading and tons of content. Exams are hard simply because of the quantity of material.
I found Prof. Sindelar condescending and antagonistic.
she is obviously very popular, i found her hostile and unhelpful. i am a history major and i think there are much better teachers in the departnment. she does know her stuff, however she is arrogant and very hard
Wonderful lady, seems compassionate and human behind the academic mask. Excellent course, good discussions, fair evaluations, charming, witty & humorous prof. A little too much work for a 6 credit class-4 essays & 2 exams!
Relies too much on power point; lectures are identical to the readings, doesn't really provide her own insight; extremely nit-picky; too much emphasis on memorization and not analysis; i didn't enjoy the class at all; there are much better history profs
there is way too much reading and she doesnt help you enough instructions on you papers tests are way too long for the time allowed and she makes you feel dumb when you try to answer any questions way too picky for papers also, i lost a grade level for not using a staple in my paper
Wonderful, interesting prof. However, loads of reading, two 3 papers and 4 exams. In the end, though, I think you get your money's worth.
She can be a little bit pedantic at times, but she's fair and helpful. Her lectures are boring as hell, and there's lots of notetaking. You have to do your readings if you want to do well in her class.
Amazing Professor. She is exceptionally helpful :).But the TA that I had was just plain awful!!!
she's boring, condencending, and arrogant.picks at the small details on essays. instructions are not clear on assignments. she definitly knows her stuff but doesn't really provide any of her own analysis to the material. very eurocentric. the ta's even worst. there are much better history profs.
History 101 made me want to quit school. Mistakes voice modulation and visuals for good teaching. She could be replaced with a tape recorder, some history books, and a well spoken homeless person.
I felt like I was back in high school again. Her lectures are boring and based entirely on the book. Her world history class consisted of material mainly in Europe and China. Does not offer her own insight. No analysis, just memorization for her exams. Can't lecture without a powerpoint.
She is the best history prof I've ever had. She actually TEACHES her students how to analyze primary documents and secondary articles, something most hist profs take for granted. She's also not afraid to give out deserving A's, and is very helpful with papers. Her lectures were engaging and fun.
I think Dr. Sindelar is a really great professor :).But I HATED HATED HATED the TA.He has got to be the biggest pain and the most useless human being I have ever come across. Why does UBC hire idiots for TAs? He is supposed to critique our work, when he doesn't have a shred of logic within him?!
Extremely well-organized, accomodating prof. Actually cares about her students ! It helps if you have taken or take religious studies 100 with this course. Re: comments below: It's a first year survey course; she's not supposed to provide great in-depth critique and analysis (duh). And, if you don't want to memorize- don't take a history course!!
DONT TAKE THIS COURSE!! The assignments are a constant waste of time and make you want to dash your brains out. She marks differently then she says she will. Tutorials are an absolute waste of time and the TA couldn't be more useless! The content is interesting and she is a good prof but the tests and assignments ruin it.
I'm not a history buff but loved her class. She's very clear on what she expects students to know. Textbook is easy to follow; reminiscent of my highschool socials book. Her exams and assignments are fair although the side readings are really boring and the discussion classes are pretty useless.
Don't look at the comments by first years. She is a very nice professor and very fair. I got a really high mark in her class, but there are those who didn't get so high. She even considers whether people are improving when deciding final marks. Helps a lot with primary documents.
Very knowledgeable, and has clear power point presentations that she posts on-line. Had a big focus on women, but overall she managed to touch on everything clearly in a large field. Assignments are designed to challenge, and she expects that you due a TON of reading... but overall, it was totally worth it.
Dr. Sindelar is a cool prof. Her presentations are interesting and engaging, and she displays expertise in the discipline.
The one class I took of hers was a joke.

The material seems very complicated and daunting at first, but at the end of the term it all just fell into place and made sense! Good & knowledgeable prof, high expectations but fair marking. Expect a fairly scattered teaching style, but like I said, it all wraps up succinctly in the end. And it's worth it, as the material is quite interesting.
Challenging material but did an effective job at making it clear. I do agree with the oservation that she can be scattered at times, although my impression was that it was due to trying to cram a lot of information into lectures.
Great Prof. Very interested is what she is talking about and makes super boring stuff more fun. All her notes are on slides so you dont have to go to all her classes, outlines tests very well. Assigns a lot of readings but you can sneak by without reading most of it. Great Class, beacuse of her.
everything was on the slide shows... essay topics were fairly simple and straight forward. Exams were simple if you stayed awake during class.
Very knowledgable, very helpful with any questions. her desire to teach is apparent in her teaching. exams are straighforward if you go to class and read text. definitely recommend
very helpful in and out of class. Explains things very well and makes you intrested in subject material.
Class is sometimes interesting, but it can be very hard to focus. Exams are very challenging sometimes, studying maps is ESSENTIAL. Without them, you are bound to lose 1/3 of marks on tests. Beware... this is not an easy grade course.
I have never hated a class this much in my life, but that isn't entirely the fault of the prof.As a person, she's a very nice lady. However, the lectures are ridiculously boring and tedious compared to my other ones, and all she does is rattle off things that she has memorized. She is very condescending as well.Says "indeed" about 50 times per class
Sindelar is a good prof. She knows what she's talking about... but this is just SUCH A BORING COURSE. There is so much information and studying for exams can be challenging. The actual exams are quite challenging too. Study hard! This isn't an easy mark course.
Anyone who thinks she is arrogant is a humorless dumbass
Good speaker, dull topics. Hard final and midterm. Map memorization is important. Notes are posted online, but are sparse and unhelpful so i basically depended on my own notes I took from the textbook.
Best class I've taken at UBC. Best Prof I've had a UBC. I learned so much. She's tough, but so worth it because if you learn from your mistakes, you can still do well in the class. She's SO NICE! She treated everyone to a beer at the end of the term and has gone to all the Wine & Cheese events put on by the History Students Association.
She's very much in love with history. Good lectures, seems like a really nice person. Read the text book, note down the names and dates of key concepts! Also remember some interesting facts from the text books to spice up your essays and you are set.
You most definitely need to have an interest in medieval history for this class. The prof is okay..I guess. She is really anal about the papers (I got marks off for forgetting a period in a bibliographic citation) and assigns a fair amount of work for a 3 credit course: 2 papers, 2 reading responses, and an exam.
Really good prof. Clear and structured, and really helpful during office hours. One of the best I've ever had!!
Great professor, very helpful outside of class. The class wasn't overly difficult, but there was a lot of reading. She also posts her notes online. There were 4 written assignments (two of them were only one page), and make sure to follow her instructions precisely! If you are a decent writer, and do the readings, you will do well.
Dr. Sindelar is an amazing prof! Her class was extremely challenging and was a ton of work but as long as you take notes during lecture, you never have to read the textbook. Going to class saves you 3 hours of reading per section. Sindelar is brilliant, she really knows what she's talking about and is definitely passionate about history.
Fairly good prof. Lectures well. Subject is a bit boring.
Very passionate and knowledgeable about what she teaches. She lectures well, but her lecture notes and slides for this class were a bit messy, very little info on them. You have to have very good note taking abilities. Assigns quite a bit of reading, gave very little time to complete the midterm which has an essay on it and marks fairly tough.
Yes, she may be knowledgeable and passionate, and she lectures alright, but her powerpoints that accompany are just brutal. Very difficult to decipher, so you are left to a lot of reading, note taking and memorization to survive. Highly critical on papers, without constructive criticism. Midterm too long for the time given. Can't WAIT to be done.
Umm... sorry but seriously the ridiculously anal requirements for citations are a bit ludicrous. I understand the importance of citations but for a first year level this is ridiculous. Getting penalized (5%) for adding a extra comma or a lack of a capital in footnotes is a JOKE. Absolutely ridiculous, if you are reading this you need to FIX this.
Tough. That about sums it up. Make sure you do the readings, or you'll be lost. Then again, you might be lost in doing the readings ...
Awful awful class. She's a good lecturer, but she expects WAY too much. Really anal on essay marking, with ZERO constructive criticism. Tons of reading (and you have to do it to try to stay up to date...and even then you still might not). Midterm was really hard. So disappointed with this class.
One of the major foci of the course was supposed to be "taboos" in ancient history, we never talked about any of these AT ALL!In each course I hold back tears of boredom. If you like history don't take this class. Drab, bleak, dull, on content. Spent a whole damn week on adam and eve!! Save your brain from being militarized to memorize.
Course didn't actually focus on what it said it would be on. Tons of random different information spanning thousands of years. Have fun trying to cram it all in. Interesting lectures but it is always unclear what she actually wants you to know. Hard marking on papers.
No actual analysis of history mostly just dates names, and pwrpnt."Learning without thought is labour lost;thought without learning is perilous.?For the tests you remember these dates and names w/o understanding what the society was actually like.Trade,kings,family/ marrigedon't rilly teach sdnts anything b/c all civilizations have these qualities.
Prof. Sindelar was a really good professor. I can understand the comments below, but let's remember that hist 104 is a survey course. Therefore it is difficult to go in depth on each of the civilizations. I found that the primary sources were very useful in trying the understand that particular society. I would take a course with her again :)
Horrible class. She made the whole class buy six textbooks including one on citing that was completely useless. I actually had to go out another book just figure out what she wanted.
This class focuses more on the history of law. There are a lot of useless readings and all of the marking is extremely subjective. I was not impressed with either the content or the fact that things were marked as if a history class and not an intro to law.
Although she does tend to ramble on, Sindelar is a very kind and knowledgeable professor. The way she tests students tends to make you over-prepare, so just take a deep breath and relax. She's very approachable and open. Definitely worth talking to one-on-one if you don't fully comprehend the material. Very interesting class!
Really engaged in her lectures. Lot's of historical background. Great in one on one situations.
Great prof! Tough but fair. She has high expectations but as long as you do the readings and make sure to edit papers you'll do well in her class.
Very unclear in her lectures. No accessible explanations of any concepts. Focused very much on one small section of law and very little on anything else, making it quite repetitive. Would not recommend the LASO minor.
Had her only for lectures so I don't know what she's like in her seminars but if you're looking for an insightful approach to the something on the reading list, she's not much of a help. She only gives the historical background of the material she's lecturing on which can be interesting but for 2.5 hours straight? Torture.
Avoid for this program, there are better Arts One profs that will give you much more insight into the material.
She's clearly very knowledgable in her field (medieval historylawgender) but she is NOT cut out for teaching. Lostmissing assignments were the norm in our class and the syllabus was super unclear with changes happening into the middle of term. She tries to be organized but fails hard. She's a fairly easy marker but it is NOT worth the stress.
Excellent instructor. Very knowledgeable about Medieval Europe and gave interesting lectures. She can be a picky marker sometimes but otherwise very fair. I like how she focuses on specifics, facts, dates and people rather than giving a broad thematic overview of the material. Would take another class with her.
I had her for Arts One in my first year. She's a little eccentric, and focused a bit much on the historical aspects of the texts, which tended to make seminars a tad dull. But, I want to say this: I have NEVER had a more understanding, kind prof when it comes to asking for help, giving feedback, late assignments etc. She's just a good human being.
Good lecturer and explains material well. Fair marker and offers good feedback on assignments. However, the course content was quite difficult and the readings were mostly primary sources, most of which were hard to understand.
Arlene is super nice and a little cooky. For my first year class I thought it was a bit difficult, but in retrospect it's not too bad if you are good at memorizing and do all the readings well. The lectures are alright if you're genuinely interested in the topic, otherwise it can get pretty boring and she tends to go off track quite a bit.
You don't need to understand the concepts as much as you need to memorize the readings.
Good professor
Would recommend if you like history. She explains concepts well and her lectures are usually interesting.
Dr. Sindelar knows the material she is teaching very well, but her readings are confusing. The course is completely based on the readings and is more memorization than comprehension. The lectures are not really relevant to the tests. Her tests are difficult.
Dr. Sindelar is an amazing prof!! She is so passionate about what she teaches and is super knowledgeable. She is very friendly and caring, and gives great feedback on essays. Lectures are very interesting, readings are sometimes tough to understand but they are interesting when connections to lecture materials are made. Definitely recommend!
Prof Sindelar was a bit scatterbrained at times, but I found her to be super charming and sassy. I loved her lectures, even if they were all over the place. We had weekly assignments based off readings, which were a pain usually, but I liked listening to her speak. V passionate and engaging! The midterm was pretty hard, but the final was better.
I hope you like reading the entirety of Hammurabi's Code and trying to get through Confucian text because that's all you'll be doing. Lectures also deliver vital information but tend to be scattered and it's never clear what's important and what's not.
Dr. Sindelar was an excellent instructor! She delivered exciting lectures that made the class super enjoyable. The weekly readings can be heavy, but generally enjoyable. Her tests are fair (just follow the exam outlines) -- she's pretty anal about footnotes on essays for a first year course. Work hard and enjoy her sass -- her class is super fun!
