Hands down, one of the best professors I've had! Prof. Catterson is hilarious and I never found his lectures boring. Paid attention every minute of the 2.5hr lecture this summer. Sparked my interest in the overlap between psych and big data; would take his classes again! Expect homework and participate in lecture to get a good grade.
Great humor, friendly enviroment , no text book required, easy to talk to and learn from.
He teaches as if your already an expert in Statistics. His scaffolding technique is all over the place and it honestly lacks structure. His lecture slides are a joke. Very dry class. Just expect to be confused- the tutors did so much better.
A.D. Catterson, or the esteemed Dr. Prof. Catterson or more simply Daniel, is a phenomenal instructor and an incredible person. I could not have passed PSYCH110 during a summer term without his help; he went above and beyond to help me and my cohort succeed. He explains concepts well, even R. Andrew Bartnof was my GSI and I highly recommend him.
A.D. Catterson, or the esteemed Dr. Prof. Catterson or more simply Daniel, is a phenomenal instructor & an incredible person. I could not have passed PSYCH110 during a summer term without his help; he went above and beyond to help me & my cohort succeed. He explains concepts well, even R. Andrew Bartnof was my GSI & I highly recommend him also.
Professor Catterson is a amazing person. Although the material may be hard, he does everything in his power to make it fun and clear. He cares so much; He invites questions all the time during class, accommodates students with extra office hours, answers emails quickly ( even on the weekends). He has a heart of gold. Simply the best. Thanks Prof.
Dr. Catterson is an amazing professor! He is extremely flexible and always willing to help his students. I asked him for a letter of recommendation very close to the application deadline, and he was so kind and responsive despite the time pressure. Moreover, during this stressful time, he inspired me to keep pushing.. wonderful person!
I took this class over the summer and had Prof Catterson. I was really worried that I would be totally bored out of my mind during the 3 hour lectures but Prof Catterson was such a great lecturer that this wasn't a problem! His enthusiasm and willingness to listen to student feed back really made this a worth while class.
Dr./Prof. Catterson truly cares about his students. His classes are entertaining and informative. He is amusing and makes class fun and interesting for what is a pretty dry subject. I would take his class again.
BEST PROFESSOR REALLY ENGAGING AND MADE THIS CLASS FUN TAKE IT WITH HIM
He does a great job recapping the material from the previous lecture and relates it to the new material. Read his lecture slides! The conceptual portion of his tests are very straightforward and so are his R portions, as long as you know what code to use for each function.
PSYCH 101 is pretty horrible. R is difficult. Catterson makes the best of a bad situation.
Professor Catterson is a great lecturer and obviously cares a lot about the subject and his students. He is quirky and has a sense of humor, which makes the usually dry subject of statistics and data analysis actually entertaining. Sometimes lectures can get a little confusing, but I really liked taking this class from him. Lots of extra credit.
Professor Catterson is very VERY good at teaching! He explains everything really clearly and uses great examples. This is the first time the class is using R extensively, so it was quite a bit more difficult than I could handle, but overall it was a great class! I would DEFINITELY recommend him! Class was webcasted, so you don't HAVE to go!
Professor Catterson is excellent considering the difficulty and limitations of the class. He understands the needs of his students and is extremely accessible, genuinely caring about helping his students learn and stirring interest in psychology and statistics. Additionally, he's cool, young and hip and gets us students.
I took psychology 101 and it was great. Expect a challenge but Professor Catterson is incredible at making course materials accessible to ensure every students success. Probably one of my favorite classes at Berkeley.
I took Psych 10/101 with Catterson and he's awesome! I loved this class and his enthusiasm about psychology and statistics. Not only does he make his lectures fun but they're so helpful when it comes to understanding R. If I had the choice of taking another one of his courses I definitely would!
Daniel has been 1 of the 3 best professors/teachers I've had. He is hilarious, tries to relieve the stress that way, he is knowledgeable and explains things over and over again if you ask him to. He tries very hard to make personal connection with his students and gives prizes away to those who try hard. He is an absolute must have at UC Berkeley.
Professor was amazing, was skeptical of statistics and its use in the begging. Seemed like a thing that was super boring. He made it interesting and engaging. Asks really good questions that make you think. Also really approachable, honest, funny, and authentic. Clear passion for teaching.
Catterson is an amazing teacher, given the context of the class. He encourages students to google their question before asking him in regards to R, but don't worry: he tries to accommodate the students' needs. He's enthusiastic, wants you to participate in class, and lectures are easy to understand. I understood R because of him. HIGHLY recommended
Amazing and very understanding professor. He is very articulate and conveys concepts in a manner that could be easily understand. Given, this is a class heavily based on stats it is really nice to have a professor who doesn't use pompous textbook definitions to explain ideas in stats and r. The book he assigns is pretty good as well as a supplement
I first had Daniel as a GSI for Psych c162 last semester so I was very excited when I found out he was the professor for 101! He was great! He was so understanding and considerate of his students. He was willing to changes due dates when he received feedback that we didn't have enough time. Tests were straightforward. Final was take home and easy!
Dr Catterson is an amazing professor! He made the class stress free despite the difficulty of the subject and the heavy content of the course. He is so understanding and kind towards his students. He provides extra credit to help your grade and is very flexible about extending the deadlines when the class is falling behind. Strongly recommended.
Dr. Catterson is seriously an amazing professor! Take Psych 10 with him - you won't regret it!
Catterson is awesome. He's so young, and he truly cares. He is a great lecturer. The tests are hard, but they are open notes, computer, everything. You're just not allowed to collaborate. He's very handsome, so I guess that is a plus. Lectures are webcasted. Office hours are great. He takes his time to explain everything to you.
Charming professor. Catterson is funny and engaging. Lectures are not mandatory since he also posts recorded lectures online. For papers, as long as you follow the rubric you'd probably get an A+ for them. Tests are fair, most of the stuff are mentioned in lectures so to be honest reading is optional.
I took Dr. Prof. Catterson PhD's psych class last summer. Statistics and psychology are dry but Dr. Cat is very engaged and makes lectures active. (Since most students yes i am are in high school) he explains things again over again if asked. He really cares about our feedback and response. He even started to use Weixin and Youku.
Great lecturer, funny and charismatic, knows how to connect with students.
Great professor!
I feel so lucky that I chose this class. Not only did I learn A LOT(I may pursue this as my future career, you never know), but also I got to spend this summer with such a cool and nice professor and such a diverse class. He inspired me with all these new knowledge and insightful ideas, and encouraged me to answer questions and ask questions.
Amazing lecturer. i was engaged the entire time. class was slightly disorganized but overall I learned a lot. very R heavy so be prepared to code. he made coding a very enjoyable experience. the take home midterms were really fair also.
He's a very entertaining lecturer, makes coding in R and learning stats really easy. Grades things very easily: all of the labs were based on completion and lots of opportunities for extra credit. You can watch the lectures online, you just have to do the linked sign-ins.
Fantastic lecturer. Extremely clear. Cares for his students and is always willing to help. A great professor all around.
IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE A RESEARCH METHODS CLASS, THIS IS IT! He made my first semester here at Cal (im a transfer) the best. He learns names, gives extra credit on every exam plus in class, and makes material that is super "scary" accessible so dont worry. Yes, it's coding + stats. But trust me: he's there for you. He's daddy. I wanna go back lol :(
I didn't have any previous stats experience but he explains everything super well and gives many opportunities to help people understand the theoretical concepts. The coding portion was really understandable; can be a bit confusing but Catterson gets it and really helps everyone out. There are weekly labs but they aren't graded hard at all.
Best teacher from all my college years, im a 28 year old man and i approve of this teacher alot. Engaging, cares about his students alot! we need more teachers like this one. f
ok LET ME TELL YOU Dr. C is the most caring professor I have ever had. He really wants his students to all succeed. I wish I could take more classes with him!! His lectures were super clear and the subject is difficult but he really guides you through it. He's also really into giving extra credit and understands what its like to be a student.
He is the best teacher in my life. He is really kind and helps international students well. Strongly recommend to take this class.
He truly cares for his students, and tries his best as a professor. He also has a good sense of humor, and keeps a positive mood for the class. Highly recommend, one of the best teachers Ive had.
He is my favorites teacher ever!!! His class is so much fun, and I learned so much!!! 10/10 would take again!!! Pay attention and take good notes!!! He prints out notes for you but taking notes on what he says really helped:))
He's so nice!!! Grades generously and overall a great lecturer! Would take his class again!
One of the best professors I've had at Cal! His lectures are engaging, he's funny and tries to engage the audience. I'm grateful to have had his as my professor.
He is an amazing professor compared to the ones I've taken. He knows what he is taking about and his lectures are really helpful. He makes the class interesting and is really straightforward which is a plus. Grading is easy as long as you do it and he offers easy extra credit and the midterms/final are based on lectures and readings.
Dr. Catterson speaks with passion in all of his lectures and makes it easier for us to translate the information to life outside the classroom. Points for this course was mostly participation/effort. He gives a lot of extra credit. Final project is your own study that you design. I would take a class with him without hesitation!
Engaging, interesting, obviously cares about his students, grades fairly, gives fair exams, weights tests/homework/quizzes fairly. One of my best professors at Cal - so good I had to take him twice! Amazing lecturer and educator for both Psych 1 and Psych 101
Catterson is a gem at UC Berkeley. Dedicated, always willing to help, a great professor, he has it all. I was very fortunate to take Psych 101 with him .
Dr.C is the best teacher at Cal!!! I learned so much from his PSYCH 101 class. I really hate stats and don't like computer programming (you learn how to use R for data analysis in this class) but honestly he made it a breeze! TAKE CATTERSON!!!
I love Prof Catterson, this is my second semester taking a class with him and he's proven to be one of the best professors I've had at Cal. Lectures are hilarious (though 3 hours is rough and I skipped class a lot) and he breaks statistics and R down into easily understood and digestible sections. Catterson is the reason I'm a psych major! Thx man
Dr. C is one of the best professors I've had and makes me excited to be a Psych major. He made the class entertaining even tho we had 3 hours of lecture and was extremely caring about students' understanding of the material. Grading was clearly outlined and lots of extra credit given! If you can, take ANY class with him. He's amazing!
One of best classes at cal! The lecture is super long but he made it not so boring and can still be engaging. Easy to understand the materials if you do the readings and OH. Many extra credit opportunities but are competitive to get thou. Final and midterm don't weight as much as other classes do. He is the reason that I keep majoring in Psych!
Literally my favorite professor and favorite class at Cal. Dr. Prof. Catterson is so personable and so good at explaining psychology that I learned like a sponge. He was always prepared and, although he makes you truly work for your grade, you will get out of it what you put in. I loved every activity and every lesson. He makes you think.
I took Psych 1 with prof caterson and it was such a fun and easy class! No midterm, just semi weekly quizzes that are open note/internet. There is a term project which is just a 5 min video about anything you want & the he gives you a study guide for the final which was extremely helpful!
Great professor who definitely wants his students to succeed! Interesting lectures!
Prof. Catterson genuinely wants you to learn. He gets you to be interested in the content material and WANT to have meaningful discussions. You will NOT be meaninglessly memorizing content in this class. He's extremely approachable, offers a lot of extra credit, and is overall a good guy! Don't miss out on the opportunity to take a class with him!
Hard course but he made the material fun!
Syllabus said mandatory lectures based on online check-ins. Went to all lectures and did them yet didnt receive the credit on attendance. I asked him & he said he had hidden check-ins in lecture notes (never said were mandatory, neither did syllabus)& response was rude when I asked. I also talked to others & many had same problem with attendance
I was blindsided by how he had hidden check-ins in notes and probably missed all of them, but other than that, I loved all of his lectures (legit gave me some stand-up vibes), and loved how he lets students who are doing well in class tutor students who are struggling instead of taking the final. It was a bit hard for sure, but hella fun too.
Professor Catterson is an excellent teacher. Presented information well and in interesting ways and was always willing to help make sure you understand the topics. If you study whats on the study guide for the mid-term, you will pass. Pay attention to the check-ins and quizzes. watch the lectures online if you miss class.
He has been by far one of the BEST professors I've ever had at Cal. He teaches psychology so well, homework and readings are manageable, and made his lectures very enjoyable. He cared a lot about students' mental health, so he did not make the class that tests heavy. His final exam was basically a compilation of all of the in-class quizzes.
CATTERSON IS THE BEST!! If you get a chance to be in his class, please please take it. He is so organized that the class is super simple to manage even when the course content is a little harder. He cares about how the students are doing and do weekly checks to make sure everyone is on the same page. Catterson deserves an award and more recognition
Prof Catterson is too good to be true. He is extremely patient, HILARIOUS, socially intelligent, & has tons of urgency to help you if you email him. He teaches 3 classes in 1 (R coding, research methods, statistics) & specializes in helping you relax. Ex: He once held office hours on club penguin during COVID-19 pandemic. I demand he gets tenure.
Persian king!!! The sweetest, most compassionate, informative, and amazing professor you could have in the psych department and Berkeley overall! Never have I felt so supported by a professor throughout a normal semester, let alone a pandemic. Lectures are long and so are discussions, but well worth it. Not difficult course material, just tedious.
Prof Catterson is down to earth, compassionate, understanding, and a great professor. He genuinely cares about every single student and is constantly trying new ways to effectively teach his courses. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone!
Hands down the best professor at Cal! Even though lectures for that class are all taught in one day, his personality and just the way he teaches makes you actually want to go to class. 10/10 would definitely recommend him.
By far the most accommodating professor during the COVID-19 pandemic. Catterson prioritizes the needs and wellbeing of his students, is hilarious, likable, and real. He teaches you how to code in R and write academic papers, all while acknowledging the major pitfalls of institutionalized inequality. Great prof, great guy. Couldn't recommend enough.
Prof Catterson is the most caring prof i've ever had. He is funny and upbeat. Lectures are long, but they're recorded anyways. Class has a lot of material to learn (more like a 5 unit class) but the way he grades is very fair. If you try and do the work, you'll be fine
Best Professor I've had since I got here.
AMAZING professor! He really cares about his students and has to be the best prof I've had. Lectures can get long but he makes it as interesting as possible. Don't fall behind on labs or else things will get confusing! No previous experience with coding is necessary. Lectures aren't strictly mandatory, but I would suggest going to them anyway.
Catterson is amazing (took him also for Psych 1 and his teaching style made me want to take Psych 101). Extremely accommodating and caring. Accessible during office hours and through email when stuck on concepts/ coding with R. 3 hr lectures but he makes it engaging. thanks profcat will miss your class
LOVE Professor Catterson. This is the second class I've taken with him, and he managed to make R and psych research super understandable. Incredibly organized and understanding - few professors at Cal really trust their students the way Catterson does. Coding isn't bad if you have some exp, but even if you don't, the prof is super approachable
Prof Catterson is awesome. I have absolutely no coding background and he made learning R so easy. He is funny, charming, compassionate, and very entertaining. I can't even think of anything to critique about his class. I would absolutely recommend Prof Catterson to anyone. His class was the highlight of my week. Also, his office hours are helpful!
Prof Catterson was an amazing teacher for intro to learning R. I'd taken a python class before but didn't have much experience coding, and he eased us into everything while challenging us and keeping the information exciting. He's funny, gives great examples in lecture, and super approachable for each student individually! 10/10
Catterson was the best!! Great lecturer, even though they're 3 hours, he's attentive to students and lets us take breaks. He's super in tune to what student's need and how they're feeling. When we transitioned to online Spring 2020 he was the most caring of all my professors. I learned a lot from him & my GSI and cannot recommend him enough. 11/10!
Doctor Catterson is/ was and continues to be a source of knowledge and professionalism that goes far beyond the walls of any college. He is willing to teach listen and guide offer constructive criticism all while teaching in a manner that you cannot forget even if you tried. You will feel inspired every class.
Such an amazing professor! With everything going on at this time, he is so understanding and caring. You can tell he truly cares about his students. Highly recommend taking him! I've only heard great things from others too. Never coded before and this class ended up being my highest grade this semester! Take him if you can!!
He's awesome. A rite of passage for every Cal Psych student. Made computer programming way less scary. One exam mid semester, gave an opportunity to make up points. Homework had very flexible deadlines. Receptive to student feedback. One con: 3 hour lecture Fri afternoon, not his fault, but brutal. But, he makes you want to come.
What a great professor to have my first semester at Berkeley! Would definitely recommend such an amazing instructor.
Was on the class discord. Answered any questions students had and would always make people feel cared for. Absolutely the best class at berk.
The best class you'll take at Cal. Amazing lectures: made me look forward to a 3 hour class on Friday afternoons. Labs: super helpful so do them when assigned. R exam helps w/ project. Prof gives every opportunity to learn and his policies reflect that. Catterson is an amazing person and professor. Can't say enough about how great this class is.
Okay. Arman is probably the best professor I've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and their learning and it 100% shows. There are no deadlines as long as you turn things in before a certain date at the end of the semester. The material can be hard and confusing but you will have a great support system of GSI's and professor. Take him!
best prof Ive ever had so far. DS seems intimidating but Arman makes it so ez. I learned to code in R in stat20 and it was horrible, here it was infinitely better. Also, everything other than quizzes/exams can be turned in late up till end of sem, and Arman+GSIs are super understanding of extenuating circumstances. overall so wholesome and an ez A.
Professor Catterson was such an amazing professor and he genuinely cares for his students. The lectures aren't too heavy and the workload isn't overwhelming. Honestly had a lil crush on prof too, he's very charming
Professor Catterson is the best professor I've had in three years at Cal. Lectures are hard because they're three hours, but he gives breaks and it's manageable. Our class struggled with labs. He listened to us & improved them. He wants you to succeed and cares about students. Super clear expectations and support through all assignments and tests
Prof Catterson is amazing! He genuinely cares about his students succeeding in his class. He offers lots of flexibility with due dates and is always willing to work with students. Highly recommend taking his class
Arman Catterson is by far one of the best professors I've had at UC Berkeley. He set up an entire discord channel with himself included for easy accessibility, he understands students have a lot to juggle with academics and outside life, and he's hilarious. He communicates frequently and clearly, and wants you to LEARN and not just memorize.
Take his class! Professor Catterson is hands down one of the best teachers I've had. He has a clear grading criteria and has outlines for everything! So when you are doing your assignments, you are not lost at all. He explains so well! Lecture is long but goes by fast. You will expected to do work obviously, but nothing too hard.
the best professor ever. so understanding. allows late work, records lectures, quizzes have multiple attempts, gives constant feedback and opportunities to do better, doesnt test hard. the final research paper is worked on throughout the semester so its not overwhelming. he plays frank ocean during class. love him
I heard many goods things, but was honestly unimpressed and bored by Catterson. Lectures were slow, empty (could be summarized in 30min), and disorganized. It was super easy, coding was surface level which was disappointing. My GSI made this class interesting, but otherwise not an accurate representation of research or coding in psych.
The most authentic professor ever, Prof Catterson could make my three-hour lecture go by in a blink of an eye. Very supportive and receptive to the class + willing to re-explain concepts in R. An amazing educator and excellent taste in Zoom Waiting Room songs :) Go Prof Cat!
I love Professor Catterson! He was super accommodating and offered lectures in-person, live on zoom, and recorded! The labs, quizzes, and check-ins were super easy automatic grade points. The R-Exam is 110% passable if you write down all lab commands and look at past exam links. There is also a lot of late work extensions w/o penalty if needed.
Do yourself a favor and take this man's class.
I really enjoyed Prof Catterson's class. Lectures were definitely too long and often boring but you can tell he tries to make them entertaining. He is very accommodating and conscious of student experiences. Very lenient with grades and assignments.
As a psych major, I was nervous about learning R (exam & project too) but he's able to break things down in such simple and logical ways, I felt set up to succeed. Grateful he routinely reminded us that "done is better than perfect" which I have adopted as a personal mantra (reformed perfectionist). He is a Cal gem & hope they value his work.
SO SWEET I LOVE THIS GUY!!! class has a fair amount of busy work but it's very easily doable
This is a coding class, when some see that they may get scared if you've taken coding classes prior, don't worry then this class is easy for you. If you don't have experience coding show up to lectures. Even though this was a 3-hour lecture Carman made it very enjoyable and made the time go quicker. very easy class
Amazing professor!! Always cares about his students and makes accommodations according to our needs. There's assignment every week but grading is easy.
He's amazing, if you're going to take 101, take it with Catterson. The content is inevitably boring BUT he really tries to make it interesting and he gives us breaks during lectures so we're not overwhelmed. He's very caring and it shows. Once again, if you have to take this class take it with Catterson
Such an amazing professor!! Really cares about his class and their understanding of the material. He makes sure that he facilitates his students, and understands that a lot of the content may be difficult. Overall, just a very kind and caring prof, I highly recommend taking him
This is the first review I have ever written about a professor- and probably the last. Professor Catterson is amazing and we are so lucky to have him with us at Berkeley. He was so understanding, his policies were incredibly generous and reasonable, and he made an incredibly daunting subject genuinely -fun- to understand.
Loved this class! Kinda intimidating at first to recall stats concepts while learning R, but he made the whole learning process easy.
AMAZING. Just AMAZING! I am not a fan of math and this is still genuinely the best class I have taken at cal. I have 1 hour lectures that 'feel' longer than this 3 hour class. The professor is such an entertaining lecturer and really takes student feedback seriously. There is also a great sense of community in lecture, super collaborative and fun!
Prof. Cat is truly a gem. He is an inspirational professor, who explains R well and really takes into account students' feedback. Berkeley is lucky to have him teaching this important, foundational class. TIPS: stay on top of the lectures, ask GSIs/him for help, and do ur final project in something you're interested in!
I LOVE THIS MAN. protect him at all costs. the content is very enjoyable and doable to learn without too much outside class studying if you pay attention in class and follow along with the code! Catterson is the type of professor I wish everyone had - he truly cares about his students AND wants them to learn. 10/10 recommend going to his OH as well
Such a friendly and caring prof. As a psych student who hates computers but had to take psych101, I was very surprised by how genuinely invested I became in this course, and I fully attribute my newfound interest in psych data science to profcat
Truly one of the best professors I've ever had at UC Berkeley. Super caring, knows his material, and truly wants his students to succeed. Lectures were interesting and engaging, and set up a class discord and answered and help students whenever someone needed help. If you're going to take psych101, definitely take it with him. You won't regret it
He makes an effort to make his lectures as engaging as possible and integrates involvement from students whenever he can. He is super passionate about the subject and super understanding. Materials organized and clear. Single R exam that's open book and can have 1/2 credit if you do corrections
This professor is amazing. He took what is likely my least favorite thing to do (programming) and managed to make it fun. While learning programming and stats we're also working on a final project all semester, broken into manageable chunks, so as long you complete all the assignments on time and follow the prompts you will get an A
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! He is literally so sweet and cares about all of his students. The assignments are actually based on things you learn in class, and the tests also test the knowledge you should have. No surprises. He's one of the best professors at Cal for sure.
Records all lectures. SOOOO engaging. He really cares about the students and their wellbeing, and really makes the class fun. He loves feedback and teaches the material well. There are many sets of practice tests. Easy class to pass (even for me and I hate stats and coding).
One of the best professors at Cal and my personal favorite so far. I was scared about the coding aspect of the course but he described everything super clearly and had so many resources to help you succeed. Even though the class was 3 hours it went by so fast and the content was engaging. Highly recommend this class to everyone!!
Catterson is very understanding and actually values student feedback. There is one exam it is open note and there are no surprises. I thought I wasn't good at R code but I learned a lot and feel confident about my abilities in it now. Overall amazing class, only downside is 3 hour lecture but if you are good at busywork + go to OH you'll get an A.
The content of this course was really heavy and Prof did his best to try and make it understandable. He did his best to make it fun. It was not easy content but between Prof and the GSIs it was manageable. Try not to get behind and it will be ok.
Arman is one of the best professors at Cal! He's caring and dedicated to making sure that everyone succeeds. The 3-hour lectures are difficult, but he's hilarious and explains everything so well, it doesn't feel that bad. The labs/quizzes are doable if you go to lecture and don't fall behind. Love him x100, would take him a million times if I could
Although lectures were 3 hours, they never felt that long. He's an amazing professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. He always interacts with the class and what you learn, you can take with you in other psych classes. Take him if you can, you won't regret it! 10/10
Amaing professor. Coming from someone thats never coded a day in my life, A.D. really excelled at making folks feel comfortable with the language. I couldn't recommend the class enough! Stay on top of your lab assignments, and go to leture and you'll be just fine. Also, the R exam is so chill.
Dr. Catterson is one of the best professors I'd ever have. His lectures are amazing not just for the content, but because he really engages his audience to the materials he presented. I was hard for me to move to different teaching styles after I took his class. The course is not easy, but he manage to make it as easier as possible. Must take him!!
Dude is great at his job. Teaches one of the most boring possible topics (not his fault) and makes it one of the most interesting classes.
He truly deserves the 5/5 he has here. If you can take a class with him, take it!!!!!! He is hilarious and the only professor who doesn't make 3 hour lectures feel like a punishment. You actually learn R without feeling the stress of programming and if you do all the work, you will get a good grade.
I loved this professor! i went into the class thinking i hated coding, but now i'm doing a cs minor :) thank you prof. catterson!
Prof Catt is so amazing and caring. For those who don't like coding, this class is great! He genuinely walks through the code and how to debug. His vibe is immaculate and you can tell that he is a professor because he loves his students. The R exam is straightforward and the final project is manageable. Overall, highly recommend for psych majors.
Professor Cat is the best! No doubt, take his class. The most caring professor I have had so far at Berkeley. Professor Cat isn't on his own schedule - He follows what the students need and caters to the collective class difficulties. You'll be doing yourself a disservice by not meeting this rad professor - Thanks for a great semester Cat!
Sweetest professor I have encountered. Geniunely learned so much. For a class that is 3 hours long, I actually looked forward to and enjoyed learning. He cares about his students and makes sure you are retaining information , not just going through the motions. My GSI (Abdullah) was so helpful. The 3 hours is worth it! Live, Laugh, Love Arman
Amazing, accessible and extremely helpful. Understanding of the difficulties we face as UCB students. Lectures were very engaging and funny. He takes the difficulty out of learning a new language, R. I highly recommend him as a professor.
Love. Him. Actually cares about the students' well being and stress and their learning progress. One of the rare professors where if you put in the effort you will get result. Clear assignments and grading. Very grateful and definitely will take again.
Prof. Catterson's goated. Definitely the best professors I've ever, and will ever, have had the pleasure of learning from at UCB. Super passionate about this class, genuinely cares for his students, and effectively communicates his smarts. Even with no coding experience, this class was really fun! Don't fall behind, do all the work and you're set.
I could not say enough good things about Prof. Catterson. This class may seem scary to anybody whose never taken a coding class before (me), but Catterson makes the experience extremely enjoyable. His lectures are engaging, he cracks jokes, and genuinely cares about every student in his class. HIGHLY recommend taking him if you're on the fence.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had. Arman makes even the driest topics engaging and fun. The workload is manageable, and unstuck study was a huge help for exam prep. Highly recommend!
So accommodating and walks you through everything needed for the class. Highly recommend
Very kind and helpful professor. The content is manageable as long as you pay attention to deadlines and ask for help as needed. Assignments and grading are very reasonable and nothing in the course should be absolutely draining. Have fun!
Professor Catterson is the literal best! Great lecturer, makes coding fun and accessible, super receptive to student feedback, and is insanely witty. The course is incredibly well-structured, and every assignment allows you to practice new skills. I learned so much in 101!
Very approachable and friendly, wants to make coding approachable. Great at breaking down complex concepts and assignments, incorporates humor and tons of breaks to make sure the 3 hours is engaging and useful. Very approachable and really wants everyone to get an A and succeed
Very awesome, both his class and himself.
Such an amazing professor!!! Makes statistics and R code so easy. I took statistics in another class that taught a lot of similar topics and Professor Catterson explained something in 30 minutes that other stats class couldn't teach in a week. He's a really understanding professor and doesn't give much homework. Definitely take his class!
Such an amazing professor! Makes statistics and R coding really easy and digestible. He can explain concepts in 30 minutes what other stats classes try to explain in a week. One of the easiest and most effective professors I've ever had in Cal. Definitely take his class.
We were his first class where he was trying out a "flipped classroom" technique which genuinely made it a lot harder to learn but he put in a lot of effort to help us and I left knowing a TON of info about coding.
Catterson is like the coding version of jesus christ to me ive never had a professor who more earnestly wants you to succeed - you get out of the class what you put in + he is so flexible with quizzes and exams. ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT, its so easy to get lost, you have to be proactive about getting support but its there for you!
HE'S THE BEST. He's so funny and he kept a THREE HOUR lecture entertaining. I had NO problems with him and would take his class over and over again. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO TKAE HIS CLASS, DO IT. He's so amazing.
If there was ever a professor who embodied every single godly attribute a professor could possibly attain, it would be Professor Arman Catterson. What an absolute legend, holy moly bro, this guy is the definition of peak. Genuinely the best prof I've ever had, would 100% take again. He and his class were such an awesome intro to Berkeley.
