For a lower division, this class is too much. He had to update his syllabus a few times when he realized people weren't keeping up with reading and watching the insane amount of weekly content he assigned. 1 midterm and final. Goodluck! 1 group presentation, only 5 ex crd pts, participation and attendance are musts. Friendly, but AVOID if you can!
At first I liked this class but he gets carried away with the reading we have to do for each class meeting plus videos to watch. Nice guy but do not take this class unless you want to fall behind with other classes. Too much work for a 100 level course.
Very sweet and genuine guy. Really wants his students to do well and to learn... Hence the big work load. But he is open to moving this around if you ask and explain that you just need a little more time... Our class did this as a whole because we thought this would allow us to do better on the test and he was really cool about it.
I loved his enthusiasm for making students learn, yes the course load was a bit much but if you took the time to go to office hours he was always available to help. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot! Recommend for people that are Sociology majors because everyone else wont find the topics interesting ,non majors wouldn't stop complaining!
There is going to a be a lot to read. How interesting the class will be is based on class participation. This class is how I expected a college class to be like: students participating in a discussion, professor giving feedback and assignments that are helpful.
Do not expect an easy A ! He requires a minimum of 4 books during a semester, and expects you to read every single one of them! He is very helpful, and dedicates his office hours to cater to his students needs, given the amount of work he assigns its understandable. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 ten page paper, and 2 extra credit film reviews.
We should have more professor like him. You can tell that he cares about his students academic success and has a passion for teaching. Highly recommend taking him.
Professor Mejia is such a sweet and helpful teacher. He is truly dedicated to his students, and will do anything to help him. Don't be afraid to ask him for his help and guidance. There is a lot of reading, but it is helpful if you plan to pursue sociology. Overall, he is the best professor I have experienced so far.
Paying attention to the lecture and reading the book is mandatory if you want an A. Tests are fairly easy because he takes some MC questions from the quizzes (which also counts as a grade). Essays are tough and require a lot of research but his grading is fair. Lectures are boring but fun once in a while. Midterm+final has MC?s and essay responses
He's an amazing lecturer. He's a very genuine professor that really cares about his students. Super friendly and passionate about his lectures. He really knows his stuff. A lot of people may find that his lectures drag on, but he tends to be more interactive and ask students for their viewpoints. He's one of the better professors out there.
He's always open to helping students during office hours as he wants them to get a good grade. There were a few pop quizzes but he tells you the week of that you'll have a pop quiz so it wasn't all that surprising. Tests were alright, if you read you'd do fine. He takes attendance points, but allows you to miss 2 classes before deducting.
Professor Mejia was super helpful dunring his office hours, I was worried about not getting an A but seeing him during his office hours was big help - got an A. It is not an easy A class. His tests and quizzes are related to the lectures. I love his teaching. Also, Do ALL the extra credit opportunities. He can add your test score up to 14 points!!
Professor Mejia is clearly very passionate about his students and teaching, but he requires a lot of reading and the whole class is based off of 3 assignments. One take-home midterm, a 10 page paper, and a final each worth 30% of your grade. He was nice enough to provide 30 pts of EC but if you do not like reading stay away from this class.
Armando Mejia is a GREAT professor and cares about his students. He's eager to help. His lectures are important to get a understanding of the readings. You will be reading A LOT. 3 papers, 3 quizzes, no final/midterm. Provides extra credit!
Professor Mejia is THE BEST professor i have ever met in my 5 years of life as a college student. I have never seen anyone who is so passionate about his work and care so much for students than him. He's a great listener too. If you struggle, go see him during the office hour! He will most def help you out.
The class is challenging but professor gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Very caring and passionate about teaching and success of his students. Im glad I took this class with professor Mejia. Learned a lot! Gives you opportunity to re write your papers and there is extra credit
Professor Mejia is a very knowledged and caring professor. He literally knows about every single social movement. He cares so much about the subject and his students and will give you the highest grade that your work deserves. My favorite thing about him was his feedback on papers and exams!
Mejia is a great instructor! He is most definitely passionate and wants his students to learn. Couldnt make it to his office hours but always willing to talk before or after class. Tells you exactly what he expects. Class consists of a group presentation, take-home midterm, 10 pg research, and final. Gave us 3 extra credit opportunities worth 5/ea.
Professor Mejia is definitely passionate and knowledgeable about the course material. He cares for his students, and definitely wants everyone to succeed - he will even give the extensions on major assignments if he feels the class needs it. Overall, a good professor and definitely someone who Id recommend.
Professor Mejia genuinely cares about the subject and his students. It is intimidating at first because there is a big term paper due but he is super helpful through the whole paper. Go to his office hours!! He will read your rough drafts and give you lots of feedback and recommendations.
Like most soc classes, this one is reading heavy. But Mejia is a great lecturer who often includes group discussion and activities to spice it up in class. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Exams are all in-class essays and you can see the exam questions beforehand. He's a tough grader but still easy to pass. The material is also interesting.
Here's the deal, this class is not for someone who wants an easy A. With that being said, if you put in the work, do all of the readings (yes they're very long and from the 1800s), and visit him during office hours, then you will thrive in the class. Its all about how much you put into it, as the majority of your grade is based on essays.
His class is definitely no an easy A, but hes more than willing to help everyone get an A. He offers extra credit, is available during office hours, and half of his midterm is take home. Taken him twice and got an A both times. Readings can be long, but allows notes for the final. Planning to take him a third time next semester again.
This class requires reading and a lot of work, but the things you read and learn about will make you think and he is willing to give you feedback. There are three in-class essays (two midterms and one final) but you get to see the prompts beforehand and notes are allowed for each exam. If you ever get stuck, he will help you make a good outline.
Professor Mejia is one of the best professors I've ever had. He does assign a lot of reading but his lectures are thorough and you can get away with skimming if you pay attention. He is caring, willing to work with you, loves his job and students, and genuinely wants you to succeed. His environment is supportive. You won't regret taking his class.
He is a great professor. I took him for multiple classes. Classical theory class is the hardest , the others are a bit easier. The papers are kind of hard, but he is very clear about what he wants and if you attend class and take good notes you'll be fine. He is one of the most caring profs and is ALWAYS willing to help, wants you to do well
He is a great professor and really cares about his students. However, he does assign a lot of papers! We had 8 papers 4 pgs. single spaced. 5 quizzes and 1 group presentation. He really tries to help his students but if you don't want to stress all semester avoid his class.
Mejia is very good, he really wants you to learn & understand the material in a real life basis. He gives great everyday examples to the topic at hand, asks for other students perspective & experiences with the topic. He has a fair amount of reading and also group presentations, research papers, extra credit, and two essays in each midterm & final
a great prof. you can really see how much he cares about his work and the students. There is A LOT of reading. Almost impossible to read it all. Skimming the reading really helped. Office hours are a must! he is super helpful, please go if you want to pass. Three essay-based exams, few take-homes, one big essay, and much extra credits opportunity
Professor Mejia is one of the most compassionate professors Ive ever had, he truly wants students to succeed. I would definitely recommend taking soc 427 with Mejia!
There are no quizzes/exams, only papers and discussions. There is a lot of reading involved in order to pass the class. However, he truly cares about his students and understands any issues. His course taught me a lot to which I still use the readings in current courses.
Professor Mejia has great respect for his students and wants everyone to succeed which is nice however it does not make his class enjoyable. He lectures at you for long periods of time. Assigns a bunch of reading & is never on timeline with the syllabus. He pushes due dates back which is nice. Not the best online prof probably better in person.
If you take Prof. Mejia take the 2 day/week, his 3 hour course is him lecturing the entire time sometimes going past class time. Wants us to discuss but he doesn't let us get a word in lol. Other than that he's good at explaining the concepts. Papers are only 2 pages single spaced, and offers extensions on them but only b/c we fell behind schedule
He's a very lenient grader and is very passionate in what he teaches. He really wants the best for his students. However the work is crazy. 2 fat essays and a fat final essay. I never showed up to class but when it came to the essays I spent a week or two on them. And he is very bad at posting grades. Didnt find out my grade until the last week.
Good luck getting an A. His papers are tedious and I wish the extra credit was applied to exams and not participation. He also assigns the longest most tedious exams and naturally he took the whole semester to give grades for even the first exam
Professor Mejia wants his students to succeed. It isnt going to be easy but if you follow instructions on the papers you will do fine. He will see if youre trying and understanding the material. Use his office hours and email when its necessary.
Mejia's class is lecture & reading heavy but his expectations are very clear. He is extremely kind and willing to work with his students to ensure their success. Yes, you will work for your grade so if you are looking for an easy A look elsewhere, but if you are ready to really learn this class will teach you so much!
Professor Mejia taught me a great amount relating the subject of Sociology. However, his class is extremely difficult. This class alone required the same amount of work as the three other classes combined during the semester. He managed to break my poor writing cycle, and allowed me to become a better writer. His class is lecture heavy. Be prepared
Professor Mejia is a solid choice for any social theory class. He is very lecture and reading-heavy, but clear in his expectations and grading. He is dedicated to his students and is highly accessible for help. If you want to gain a solid understanding of social theory, take Professor Mejia.
After taking SOC 436 with Dr. Mejia, I have developed a new way of looking at society. If you're looking for an easy A and want to do minimal work, this is the wrong class. All of Dr. Mejia's courses teach you the course material thoroughly and prepare you for the level of work your career will demand. Dr. Mejia means well. Take all his courses.
He's SO caring about his students. He always wants to help, but this class is HEAVY reading. 2 papers ( folders) and a PowerPoint project, the midterms package was 12 pages, single-spaced, two essays and key terms definitions. The class was really overwhelming in work, but you learn a lot. Participation is 100 points (discussion of the readings)
Mejia really cares about his students and often gave extensions for his papers. His instructions for assignments were clear and there wasn't any weekly homework. However, if you're the type of student who doesn't learn by being talked at for an entire class period, I would not recommend this class. I feel like I didn't learn much by meeting on zoom
3 papers (single space) , no post, lecture heavy, very hard to focus because his lectures are boring. Attendance is some what mandatory
I'm currently enrolled in his 357: Modern Sociological Theory class. Honestly, he's one of my hardest classes yet. He is an incredibly tough grader. So much reading in addition to the ridiculous assignments. 4 papers and 4 quizzes BUT he requires 4 pages SINGLE SPACED!! So far only 1 person with an A in the class. Everyone has C's.
A lot of reading. 3 papers only, no quizzes/exams/discussion posts. Participation in zoom class matters a lot. Taken online and he's often late with Everything - arriving to class, submitting grades, uploading things, etc. Is well spoken but teaching does not translate well over zoom. Not an easy class at all.
Lecture heavy, single space essays 4-5 page.. extra credit (10pts).. participation matters.. no test , or discussion post , a lot of reading wouldnt recommend this class if you are looking for an easy A grades papers late.. provides extensions.. the work load is insane..
Professor Mejia is a caring professor and makes himself accessible to students when needed. He's very clear on the instructions for assignments, but they could be a workload if you don't keep up with the readings (there's A LOT). he's understanding and provides extensions to the class but I don't feel like I learned a lot from his heavy lectures :/
Professor Mejia is very caring and is very clear on what he wants for his papers. The class was honestly so easy but I have time articulating myself when I write papers but I definitely improved on my writing skills. I will say he did upload late and take a while to grade. I loved learning about racial inequality and the material was not hard.
He is very kind, he is also very understanding. However, he never posted grades when he said he would and he was a bit of a tough grader. He always gave last minute extensions which was nice but he gave them a bit too late.
Professor Mejia is dedicated as a professor. He has mandatory readings every week. His tests provide the readings that will be needed. We are in college not high school. Do some work and youll pass with an A. Yes, he is a tough professor. But his expectations are very simple. Ive taken two classes now and always pass with an A. Just try.
Professor Mejia is a great professor. His grading criteria is clear. There are a lot of reading assignments but it's necessary because they are informative and useful for the assigned essays and final. I would highly recommend his course on racial inequality. You will learn a lot. Take him.
Prof Mejia is straightforward. If you don’t have time to read, then don’t take this class. You will need to read and will also need to write papers but nothing hard and it’s pretty easy. Never be afraid to ask questions. This professor actually cares about his students and will help you if needed. Great prof overall.
This was my 2nd semester taking him because I really enjoy his teaching style. His classes do require you to read a lot but they are worth it in the end when you see your final grade. He also is very caring and understanding when it comes to late- assignments; he makes sure we are always doing okay. I highly recommend taking him!
Honestly he gives a lot of readings, but if you stay on top of them and pay attention during class lectures it should be an easy A! He provides you with a lot of help and office hours where you can check in. It might seem intimidating but he teaches in a way it makes you want to engage. Take him!
Professor Mejia is a great professor. There are 3 papers throughout the semester, the first paper requires the most and they gradually get easier. The papers are easy to write as long as you read the materials assigned. He gives a sample outline to follow for each paper to help you get the best grade possible, offers feedback and offers E/C.
Does not give a lot of homework, but the assignments he gives are big! He is not the easiest grader on these assignments either. Be ready to read a lot, as he requires discussion from everyone regarding the text. He is very caring, provides help, and is passionate so that is a good thing. Would I take him again? Not too sure...
Great Professor, but had some of the most repetitive lectures. Hate to say it, but sort of reminded me of a high school class. Read and thoughtfully engage with the material, and you'll get an A! Also offers extra credit for movie-related assignments!
Professor Mejia was passionate about his lectures. In order to get the discussion going you have to make sure to read. His class does consist of a lot of reading. He is a great professor, only take him if you are ready to read and discuss!
This professor was late to class every day. 15 minutes late and on some days even up to 30. He has many papers(4 total /8 pages) and if you do not follow his structure exactly, he will fail you. barely lectures or even comes to class , Why would we go to office hours if you can't even respect our time in class?
Coming from someone who isn't good at school professor Mejia was a great professor. 3 assignments the entire semester and they get easier each time. When I started slacking on coming to class, he emailed me personally asking if everything was alright which I really appreciated. He didn't grade that hard on the 3 essays... follow the outline.
extremely reading-heavy (50-100 pgs a week). Grades are based on 4 difficult assignments. Expectations are extremely high. Instructions and grades are posted several days after promised (happened with every assignment and grade). He is very passionate, but Expects students to be prompt and prepared but often lacks that himself for assignments.
If you have to take this class as an elective, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He doesn't show up to class on time, LIKE EVER. I'm talking about like 30 minutes late at least once a week, he takes attendance once he shows up. VERY reading-heavy, very lecture-heavy, huge midterm, two papers, and a PowerPoint presentation. never grades on time
Honestly, I expected a lot more from this course and professor. A lot can be said, but to sum it up, this class was very disappointing. He was late every day. Even on the first day, he arrived thirty minutes after class had started. He also takes forever to submit grades and feedback, yet expects his students to be enthusiastic. Not worth it.
Professor Mejia cares so much about his students. The class is essentially broken down into lectures and reading. When I say reading, I mean A LOT of reading. It's way too much reading but it's good to read home to be prepared for the discussions. He also offers extra credit and office hours which I suggest you to visit. The midterm is very big!
Get ready to read. Has you read anywhere between 80-100 pages a week.Treats the class like a grade school class where you have to work in groups or else you get points taken away. You have to buy a text book and he also uploads PDFs that are blurry and hard to read/ see. Felt like my papers were his takeaways, not my own.
Professor Mejia is the professor to take if you want to learn sociology and acqquire strong analytical and writing skills. If you have baseless complaints, go elsewhere. Professor Mejia's classes are excellent preparation for grad school; very informative. With his guidance and extra office hours, you will suceed in his class. Take him and learn!
I just completed Soc 346, and I learned a ton! I am not a soc major, and this class opened up my mind to intersectional inequalities. Informative lectures, and great assignments. A great college course. Also, he is a caring mentor who accomodates all student needs! If you have a hateful attitude, don't take the class. I Highly recommend him!
Mejia's class seems daunting at first and there is a lot of reading and class discussions. However, you really need to just read the material and do the work. I'm not a good essay writer but managed to get a 90% in this class. He also provides a lot of counseling & extra credit opportunities.
You're graded on 2 exams and 2 papers, also participation/attendance. Don't take this class if you frequently skip or do not like to participate in class. He gives good feedback on assignments and will help guide you to do well in the class, seek internships, or pursue grad school if you talk with him during office hours. Also expect to read A LOT.
Do not take this class, he is always 30 minutes late. He has high expectations for students when he himself does not respect student's time and effort. This class is very exam heavy and requires extensive readings from assigned textbook readings.
Few professors care sincerely about student success. Professor Mejia goes above and beyond in caring for his students. Extra office hours, sample student assignments, having a teaching assistant, discussion questions to help understand the readings, extensive student discussions, and informative lectures reveal his care. Take him and learn a ton!
I had no idea what to do with my major. Professor Mejia helped me plan for my future. If you are lazy, angry, and immature, then don't take his class. Don't write negative comments if you did not want to be in the class or did not do your part. His class is valuable, and he is a caring, kind, understanding, and knowledgeable person. Take Soc 346!
He's a good professor and a kind, caring person. I enjoy being in his class, especially during lectures which are really interesting. The class is divided by class discussions and lectures. He does put us into groups quite a bit which can be a little annoying as I learn better when he lectures. Besides from that, the class is very engaging overall.
His lectures are honestly great, the content is interesting, the readings are decently easy and enjoyable to engage with, and there's just a lot of content to review, yet Mejia is continuously late to every class. Essentially, every morning, he is at least 20 minutes late, often up to 40, which makes you really feel like he's wasting your time.
Professor Mejia is invested in student success. Take advantage of his EXTENSIVE support! A great lecturer, he promotes class discussion. Often we use the beginning of class for that, and he starts the lecture afterwards (but not "late" as some have stated hatefully). The professor in puntual, caring, and very understanding. Don't hate! Learn!
This is a required course for sociology majors that students believe to be "hard". But with Professor Mejia, the class is enjoyable, and a great opportunity to improve your writing and critical thinking skills. He delivers informative lectures, provides sample papers/outlines for all assignment, and organizes useful class discussions. Take Mejia!
This is an AMAZING class that covers key concepts, theories, history & contemporary issues. A GREAT overview of U.S racism, power and social inequalities. Professor Mejia is caring, has tons of office hours, gives great feedback, and presents informative lectures. Assignments are interesting and useful. Highly recommended!
The professor is challenging but caring. He will guide you to suceed in the class if you do the required work and participate in discussions. Please don't criticize wrongly or lie. He gives you all the tools to succeed, and will build you up with useful knowledge about important issues. As a non-sociology major, I strongly recommend his class.
This class is interesting and the papers are pretty easy but he late to class every single day which is so annoying and he holds his students to standards that he doesn't adhere to himself. TA is rude also. He does give good feedback on essays, but we were behind the entire semester because he was late every day, sometimes even by 45 minutes.
consistently late to class and assigns immense amount of reading.
Good lectures and very engaging class
Consistently 20-40 minutes late to class and the class is only around an hour long. There were 2 times where he would send LITERAL last minute emails saying that class is cancelled when there was 10-15 students sitting in his class already. Updates the syllabus throughout the semester as he wasn't able to cover the content because he was late.
Amazing class! It will open your eyes and help you become a critical analysis of the historical, sociological, and political aspects of racial inequality. The professor is easy-going, really knowledgeable, and very helpful. Informative and written assignments that are really useful. Lots of discussion to accompany informative lectures. Take him!
Professor Mejia is an outstanding professor if you want to learn, grow intellectually, and prepare for the real world of work and professional life. He teaches you to think for yourself, to write analytically, and get a great education. He offers extensive support to help you succeed. He treats you like an adult. If you are not, look elsewhere.
This is my second class with Professor Mejia, and I got my tuition money's worth in all the knowledge I received. As an older student, I echo what others have said about his dedication to students, his helpfulness, and professionalism. If you want learn, this is a a great class! If you are hateful and close-minded, please look elsewhere.
