This guy is brilliant...an because of that so hot
Great Prof. If you hear his "salami tactics" lecture you'll know what I mean.
his lectures are like a good movie
AMAZING proff!! His lectures are absolutely fluid and entertaining- impressive
awesome lectures, I really learned a lot
makes history actually interesting
He is by far the best professor in the world!!! Move over UofT, we got Arne!!!
Very interesting lecturer. Know your stuff on his tests though.
He's hot!! Oh yea, and a great prof too!
Best course I took this year
A+ prof. Really knows what he's talkin 'bout. Wish all prof could be lyk him.
Take his class. Worth your while. You actually learn something.

Awesome and Clear, great prof!
Simply the best! I go to his class jst 4 fun!
You'll learn lots! He's hot =) Intelligent, interesting, great to listen to.
The markers think you are doing your MBA in History...drop the class !!!
Amazing!!! No matter what it is, if he's teaching it, it's a must-take course!
Great espionage course!!! But a HARD bloody marker - do papers early!
Great Prof!! Lectures were great, interesting and fun. Tests and essays hard, but reasonable. Would take course over again just for fun.
Great lectures. The best history prof at Rye. Take all his advice seriously and you'll do fine.
We studied at Le Club and Dr. Kislenko saved our lives. He rocks! Just like Bob Seger.
He'll teach you HISTORY!
Great Teacher, one of the few in the world that makes you want to learn. Idiots who criticize him have no drive, no motivation, and no appreciation for history in general. HIS CLASSES ARE THE ONES WORTH PAYING THE TUITION.
Wonderful Prof. Anyone should take his class. You will learn your history if Arne has anything to do with it.
HOT! HOT! HOT! His wife is one lucky lady! While many of his jokes have 80's references, they are funny nonetheless. He is a clear, concise teacher who is actually a pleasure to listen to.
One great teacher! Although the class wasn't easy, it was enjoyable and I always interesting. He draws you in and I have to admit his jokes are funny! And yes, he is quite sexy!
His hotness makes it very hard to concentrate but after you get past that....well....you can't get past the hotness!
This guy is the man! Makes you laugh while you learn. Great guy and a great prof. That one prof that you'll remember years from now. He's also a huge Leaf fan!
Kislenko is awesome! He is extremely helpful and friendly. You walk away from his classes actually knowing something new and interesting about history. All professors should have his teaching style and enthusiasm.
the class is amazing. he takes the time to help you and when it is all done, you have actually learned something, and he is very sexy
AWESOME Guy. helps with everything. He is a role model to all other profs. Wish more were like him
The best professor I've ever had, and one of the best at Ryerson. Took the time to help his students and make sure everything was clear.
Great all the way!!! Pray you get him, he is a GOD! This man IS DA MAN!!! Hard, but...Holy Sh*t he blows you away with unthinkable history!!! CJG is always remember Arne the soviet Checka!
Nne of the best teachers I've had at Ryerson. Fair marker but you better know your stuff.
The best prof that I ever Had. Don't even bother buying the text, just come to his classes and enjoy his lectures. I have to admit he makes his lectures very interesting, and funny at the same time!
Excellent professor. Explains the subject with so much detail it makes you feel in the midst of the wars.
Hands down the best prof I've ever had. Totally dedicated to teaching, and his lectures are fun! If you don't like history, sign up for one of Arne's classes - he'll make you a beleiver.
Why didn't he teach 604? arrrgh, my history experience at ryerson was greatly affected by his absence. A Fantastic professor and hands down the best one I've ever had for a liberal arts course, going back into my high school days.
Best prof. at Ryerson hands down... take the course just to see the lectures even if you don't like history it's worth it.
Amazing prof. amazing course. Gave me a new appreciation for history and the world. best prof, write everything down. It's all important
I took this class last year, and Dr. Kislenko is an amazing professor. If you ever thought history was boring, take this class and your mind will forever be changed. Kudos to Dr. Kislenko for his enthusiasm.
Awesome teacher...a lot of work, but he was really helpful. Best teacher at ryerson.
WOW! This guy takes my breath away. He's amazing, knows his stuff so well and really makes you love it. Never a dull moment. Everything he says is important so be prepared to write. Makes you wish you could travel with him. Definitely worth your money.
The best prof ever! I loved his class.
Very understanding prof who's funny and engaging. Amazing lecturer. History has never been so interesting. Wish all my profs were like him. Exams are very fair.
Best prof in the school.
Awesome
This professor is a very interseting fellow- and a little bit scary. But, what can you expect from someone who can't tell you anything about themselves apart from the fact he has a Russian ancestory???
Very talented unbiased person!
I have to learn more in this class than any other class in my schedule.. and I still get bad marks.. interesting, but he expects you to know stuff as well as he does.
Nice guy. Bit of a tough course. Take another twentieth century history course before this one - will definetely help!
The best ever. Very nice, very funny, and an all-around great prof. Take anything he teaches!
Ryerson's best professor. He actually cares about students. Passionate and smart. Funny. And very hot too! His courses are worth every minute. You will look differently at life. He doesn't expect to know what he knows but wants you to learn and CARE. Only
great prof. good lectures. worth taking classes with him. one of the best teachers at ryerson
Amazing prof. Never taken history before, but he's made it interesting. Knows his material. Very helpful with essays. Best prof in my 4 years at this school. Too bad he's not in my faculty!
One word.....WOW. Good guy, good material, well-organized and pure passion. Arne is an amazing teacher. Good job!
Best Prof in school!
Very effective professor. Passionate, Enthusiastic, Knows his stuff and wants students to suceed in his course. High expectations but good course.
Absolutely amazing! Not an easy course, but really, really interesting. Arne's lectures were the highlight of my week last semester. I'm looking forward to HST504 this fall.
Greatest teacher at Ryerson. Take this course. He made everything interesting and fun. Great jokes. Lots of work but all worth it. His passion for history makes the course great.
great prof!!!!
Best professor ever!
He's very smart - expects a lot. Is a tough course, but VERY worthwhile! Regardless of your major, take this course! A saying comes to mind, "In order to predict the future, you need to know the past..." Very true for business students - theory is as important as is practical. Thanks Dr.Kislenko!
Best prof ever!! The most interesting class i've had in all my years. He makes it fun to come to class. He makes you work and provides a lot of material but he makes it so interesting that it doesn't even seem like studying. Everyone must take one of his classes at least once.
Kislenko, honestly is the most amazing professor I have ever had. He is so passionate about history that he changed my views and understanding of history. He has a great sense of humour and he is very charming. He tries his absolute best to treat all students equally and with respect. Also very helpf
Amazing professor, he's not easy but he really tries to help you if you ask for it (there are lines to see him during office hours though). Awesome lectures, no need to read the text if you go to class and take notes.
Honestly the guy is nice but this course is not easy. You have to work ure butt off.. dont take this course if ure not willing to read 600 pages
Amazing course! Best prof at Ryerson without question.
He makes the course very interesting. Though the course is heavily demanding, you must be prepared to take this course.
this class and prof is everything and a bag of chips! i learned alot from this one class..the lectures are awesome!..arne is one of the best profs at ryerson, very knowledgeable and always available for help..attend every class and the course will be no prob..overall he's a good guy..KISLENKO ROCKS!
SIMPLY THE BEST PROF. HE MADE CONSIDER SWITCHING FROM ENGIREEING TO HISTORY, BUT TO BAD I HAVE SEEN OTHER HISTORY PROFS. TAKE HIS CLASSES IF YOU CAN YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU GOT IT.
Amazing
This prof is awesome! He makes history "sexy". Not too mention he's sexy himself. All the girls are in love with him and all the guys want to be him. All of his courses are worth the tuition. I've never learnt so much in a class. You must take one of his courses if there's anything you do at Rye!
My favourite prof in Ryerson. He is a great person and a great teacher. His courses aren't easy but they are worth it. I wish he taught more courses.
The greatest prof at Ryerson University!!! Definately my favorite. He makes his classes interesting and is always helpful when it comes to your essay topics! I already took two classes of his!
He Rocks!!
If you ever decide to take a History course it must be with Arne.He is by far the most interesting prof at Ryerson, very passionate about his work. In addition his jokes are actually pretty funny unlike some other profs. The best Russian that I ever met!! :)

HIstory is usualy a yawnathon, but Arne makes history a wild ride. The Espionage course is just awesome.... i would take it twice if i could.
He's an amazing teacher!
I think in my next undergrad life I will major in history thanks to Arne, and after that I want to be a spy. Arne rocks!!!! And everyone at Rye should take a class with him and his smarts and humour make him hot too.
wow. i only took this cause my favourite psych prof told me to. i never liked history. hes great. passionate, good story teller, funny, gets cuter as the weeks go on, challenging class but definetly no regrets! wish i found him earlier! i like history now.
Awesome. Easily the best course I've taken at Ryerson. He's into the subject and each class feels like you're watching A&E. Brilliant.

The best prof EVER!!!! and he is absolutely halarious!!!

As an IT major had no interest in History and just needed an elective. Arne changed all that. He is hands down the most hilarious, helpful, intelligent and down to earth prof. His classes are like watching all those never before seen footage from WW1&2 on the A&E. Brilliant!
Very good prof. Loved his cource as he made it funny and very informative.
OMG, Most AMAZING prof at Ryerson. He's HILARIOUS! He knows his stuff, and he genuinely cares about the students and what he teaches. I had such a crush on him, cause he's just so cool! If you have a class with him, consider yourself lucky!
The most intriguing and thought provoking prof I've ever had
I think,no wait I know that I am in love with this man. He is the best professor or teacher I have ever had. I highly recommend him to anyone if you want a professor who is entertaining, passionate and sexy in an odd way. I have nothing negative to say about him accept that I think he's married:)
Arne is absolutely the best professor I have ever had, hands down. Arne's passion for not just history but teaching history is just amazing. The best three classes I have taken at Ryerson. If every teacher was just half as good as him then Ryerson would have the best profs in Canada. I absolutely recommend taking any class with Arne!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is the highlight of my week!!!! The most interesting course I have ever taken, with the most amazing professor!!! He is so passionate about what he teaches you cant help but love his class. Oh, and girls be warned, you will have a crush by the end of the semester:)
Dr. Kislenko is not only dedicated to his subject, but goes beyond that by imparting his passion onto his students. A pleasure to be taught by, and by far one of the most inspirational professors in the faculty.
Made history into an amazing topic! One of the best profs. Take the course and make sure to keep up with work.

excellent, love him
It's quite a feat to be able to teach history in a cohesive and interesting way. I took this class so I could see what all the hype was about, and he has exceeded my expectations. It's a tough course if you're not used to it, but it is rewarding and worthwhile. Did I mention he's a great guy? I'm gonna miss it (and him!) come December!
Officially the best lecturer in Ontario. Arne is great, his class is the only one I actually look forward to going to. His anecdotes add so much to the lectures, it's more like story time each week than a lecture. It's tough to pay attention in a 2-hour history lecture but in his classes you never have to work about that.
pure champ!!!!!!!!
He is a perfect prof i would say...
Great Prof!!
He brings the joy back to learning
Voted Ontario's best lecturer, he does not disappoint. He captivates his students and you can tell he's passionate about his work. He's not an easy marker, but he's definately fair. He provides excellent help at his essay writing tutorial. Best history prof I've had during my 4 year tenure at the school.

great prof, interesting class. its a very hard class if u've never taken history before.
Best Prof and Best class I have had in my 4 years at Ryerson. He is so passionate about teaching and it really shows, I have always loved history and this class sparked my interest even more. I didnt miss a single class, and they were always full, even on Fridays when we had class until 5pm and he went 10 and 15 minutes past, no one in the class e
He has changed my historic view on History!
When I grow up I want to be like Arne! This prof rocks and EVERONE should be made to take at least one of his classes! Even other profs should be required to take a class with Arne! Then they'd see REAL TEACHING at work!
HE'S AMAZING
THe best prof. you could ever ask for!!!!!
Very and passionate about his work. Amazingly brilliant and nice, too. He makes class really fun and changed my perspective on history and the world. And he's super hot! *ROWR*
Good prof, but the material wasn't as good as I thought it would be. He is very enthusiastic about the course, and is a good teacher, but I just found the course to be not as exciting as it was made out to be. That really made it difficult for me to enjoy the course! Also, too many questions in too little time for the midterm!
Yes, his class is hard, and yes its alot of work. But it is almost impossible to be hanging on every word he says. He is just awesome and inspiring. And SUPER sexy:)....
Easily the best professor ever. Excellent classes. Great guy. Be ready to think and work, but he gives you more than your average education. Ryerson is very lucky to have him.
Great Professor, good guy, extremely intelligent, informative, descriptive and educated on what he is teaching.
Sooo amazing!! I never missed a class, loved every minute of it....EVERYONE should take his espionage class. Who knew baldies could be so sexy? :)
Prof. Kislenko is extremely engaging and knows his stuff inside and out. Highly recommended class (or anything else he teaches!)
The teacher's teaching style is inspirational!
Dont miss class. A lot of work - must know every detail to get a good mark...but totally worth it! You could get a C and still be so glad you took it. Always makes time for students...He is totally loveable!!!
Probably the best all around educator I have encountered in 16 years of education. History was not my area of study but Arne's passion, intelligence and oratory skill made it a joy to come to class. Plus he's maybe the friendliest prof you will ever come accross.
Absolutely the BEST PROFESSOR at Ryerson. He truly is an inspiration, and his classes are amazing! The work is very tough, but defintely worth it! No matter what grade you get, you are assured to learn more, and enjoy his class more than any other class! AMAZING!
Harsh marker, expects you to know anything and everything relating to the course. But easily one of the best professors I've ever had, and probably ever will have. Incredibly smart and funny; Passionate about the course, and truly inspirational. You will actually retain info not b/c you have to but b/c you want to. Makes you care.
He's definitely the best and most inspiring prof i've ever had. His knowledge/views on history and politics are extremely interesting and it makes you wanna attend every class. The course was NOT easy b/c he marks the essays hard, but if u attend classes, u'll do well on tests. u have to take at least 1 course with Kislenko in your lifetime.
Great class, really interesting lectures. Arne is constantly busy so don't expect to get much 1 on 1. Also beware of his TA's those ****s are worse markers than he is
Finally, a history about people and not just battles, operation, strategies, technologies. Sure those things are important, but it's really about people involved in intelligence, and in war. Dr. Kislenko have great passion teaching about that. He is simple one of the best prof at Ryerson and teaches with passion. Highly recommend!
Arne is the best prof I've ever had, and the hottest
Now I know why he won Best Lecturer in Ontario. He's amazing. Passionate and funny, helpful and approachable. Looked forward to his classes.
The BEST!
Very knowledgeable :)
THE GOOD: Really good, passionate lecturer, who gets everyone amped up about history with his enthusiastic teaching style. I would take his classes agian... THE BAD: unbelievably hard marker, I worked my butt off just to scrape off a 65 on the essay and mid-term. He needs to ease up & realize students have trials & tribulations outside of his class
Great Prof, however, his marking is arbitrary and is stupidly hard. You must know everything just to get an C. I don't think anyones ever gotten higher than a B in this course.
If the last two guys spent half as much time caring about their education as Kislenko did they might have got a better grade! He is the best. Serious, yes, but he really cares. NEVER arbitrary or brutal, unless you deserve it! The best anywhere. Very caring, very funny, the best.
Very smart and interesting. I would rather go to his lecture than watch a good movie... his TA's mark really hard and there is a lot of work involved in hst 500. high expectations. he would fail the whole class in the blink of an eye.
Very very knowledgeable prof I have had for a long time. His lectures are completely pact with information and not a single sentence is wasted. He also keeps the lecture fun and includes jokes here and there. Take International Relations with him and you wont regret it.
He is one of the best prof's at Ryerson hands down. His lecture's are amazing. You have to go to class or your screwed. He is a hard marker, but he tells you up front what he expects from you. He has a passion for the material that many prof's seriously lack. The material isn't too hard, but you have to know your stuff in order to do well.
Love him!
Without a single doubt the best prof at Ryerson and one of the most intelligent people I've met. It was a privilege being in his classes. Funny, serious, modern; Arne is great at teaching history. I've recommended my friends to take Kislenko's classes even if they're not required in their specific programs. That's how highly I think of this prof.
I love him.
Best Lecturer
Impossible marker.....
I would definitely stay away from this is you have no interest in history. You must really know everything to get a good mark. I thought I studied pretty well for the midterm and only got a B. Extremely hard marker. Brings down your GPA.
Arne is a great prof. He explains everything really clear during class and his midterm consist of four terms that you have to explain and give its significance. therefore you have to come to class and take good notes. "if you dont come to class, you're screwed" finished with a B- and this was my life last sem. Exam=same format w/essay, which he gav
If you want to know what a university prof should really be like, attend his class! Very gifted.
Arne is so entertaining, I continued to attend his class ALL semester even though I dropped it. I highly recommend you take him if you want to actually learn something.
GREAT lecturer and extremely helpful outside of class. He epitomizes 'knowledgeable'. He is a tough marker though. After visiting him for help on office hours a couple times and having him remark all my assignments (including the final) I squeaked by with an A-. Supposedly, I was one of less than 10 ppl in a class of >100 with an A- or greater.
He is an interesting, entertaining lecturer. But be prepared to WORK! He is a very hard marker, but you will learn something in this class.
I took this class as a general elective. The topic looked interesting and I hoped for easy mark to bust my GPA. It turned out to be a hard-core history course. However, it was the most entertaining and interesting course I have ever taken. Kislenko, by far, is the best prof I have ever had. If you want to learn history take him, but think about you
honestly..made more use from the book than his lectures. the ta was just useless and the grading was absolutely ridiculous.
Simply the best prof ever. So interesting, smart, funny and nice. You have to work but university is supposed to be challenging! And it's worth it. You will love every second with him and actually LEARN something!
Absolutely incredible experience. If you want to have an extremely rewarding university experience, then take ANY class with Dr. Kislenko.
If you want extremely rewarding university experience at the cost of (UNFAIR) LOW GRADE, take him!
His marking is absolutely ridiculous. He considers himself the best historian in the world.
The last two guys still want to be in highschool! Obviously they are F students who dont appreciate education. Kislenko is the best. Hard but fair, and really cares about students. Take his courses and get a REAL university experience.
Good lecturer but WORST marker
Worst professor at Ryerson. He thinks that History is everything and nothing else matters. Switch to another prof if you have a choice.
Best professor at Ryerson. Yes, he is a hard marker, and yes, he thinks history is very important, but he really wants students to learn something. The most rewarding class I have taken, and the best professor I have ever had. He actually cares, and if you ask him for help, he is only too happy to oblige. Him and his class changed my life.
I got an A- in Arne's class, but I busted my ass for it. He's a hard marker but he appreciates anyone who comes to him for help. If you're looking for an easy A take another class. If you're looking for an amazing and rewarding class take one of his. I took all 4 of his classes as my upper level liberal arts classes because he's amazing.
AMAZING PROF. You want to slack off then don't even bother, but if you want to learn, like really learn, then take his classes and be blown away!
Best prof in my 3 years at Ryerson! I will definitely continue taking his classes as my upper liberals for my remaining credits. Very knowledgeable, very enthusiastic, very entertaining, and a very hard marker - taking one of his classes should be a MUST for all university graduates.
Taking one of his classes is a must! He is very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic about the material. He is very clear about the content and what he expects. There were no surprises on his midterms or exam, but attendance and revision is mandatory to do well in his class! I have never enjoyed history as much as I did with him teaching it!
He doesn't admit his mistakes. He is a good storyteller but an extremely hard marker. Avoid him at all costs if you care about maintaining your GPA
The best prof!!
Kislenko is a great teacher however his TAs are another story.Kislenko is very detailed and you can learn a lot from him. He is extremely helpful
Even though I didn't get a great mark I still learned more in Arne's class than in any of my other courses. I didn't like the seminar's but his lectures are great. (essential for exams.) All the stress he puts you through is worth it in the end. He's a tough but rewarding teacher.
If you want a legitimate university experience take one of Kislenko's class. He sparks interest in every aspect of this history course and is great in explaining such events. He is a very hard marker but is very open in helping his students. Would definitely take his class again!
He is easily the best professor at Ryerson, and probably in Canada! Passionate, funny, very smart, and really, really nice. That is IF you actually care about the world and your education! He's the most helpful and dedicated teacher I have ever had. Take his classes and feel smart!
Amazing, passionate professor. He makes every effort to ensure that you understand the material at hand and his manner of teaching help so much. However, he is a hard marker and so are his TAs. The course was interesting but you definitely have to work for your A or B!
Great class, tough but fair. To get an A one has to read above and beyond whats provided in class. Will make you a better student.
Great prof, really interesting! If you want to learn something take a class with him. If you want an A then be prepared to work your ass off.
He's very interesting and knows his stuff. If this is a topic of interest, it's definitely worth taking. He and the TAs mark very hard, and it is probably best to visit him during his office hours and make sure you're on track. Essays are scary (he's on the plagiarism committee) but include as many recent sources as possible and you'll be fine.
Took espionage with him. Great prof if you want to learn! Not so good if all you want is an A. That being said, I didn't get a very good grade, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class, and would not hesitate to take another course with him.
Incredibly arrogant, but incredibly intelligent. Very good speaker. Will help you if you put in the time to see him in office hours. Every grade is hard fought. Expects your absolute best. Sensationalizes some course material and gets insignificant tidbits wrong sometimes, but is very insightful and educational overall.
I would say, he is a good presenter but not a good teacher. Overall, he is one of the hardest professor and makes you cry once you see your exam score.
If you care about the world in which you live then you must take a class with Dr. Kislenko. He is the best teacher at Ryerson across all disciplines. Go to class, takes great notes, and you will be successful. The tests are real knowledge based tests not multiple guess so you cant fake your grade. Everyone should take one of his classes!
My god, he is hands down the hardest professor i have ever taken ever. You can see why he was ranked #1 prof in Canada in '05. Hard, yes, but as someone who does not enjoy history, I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Probably learned more about history from this one course than i have in all other history courses combined. Excellent professor.
HARD marker! I took a history course with him as an elective/liberal. He demands alot from all his students regardless what their major is. His lectures are very interesting and fun. He is a very knowledgeable and brilliant historian, but he should take it easy on the marking! This is coming from a senior law-A student!
Best Prof ever. Course will not help your GPA- but if that is your focus, you have a lot to unlearn anyway. Dude change direction of my life.
Amazing professor. Courses are on another level, you will completely change the way you tackle history. Expects you to write at a higher level than other classes and what you're used to, but without a doubt will kick you into shape mentally. Also very approachable and kind even if he seems a bit intimidating in class. Go to office hours!
The best professor ever.
This was my favourite class from my Ryerson degree. He is a really interesting lecturer and the subject matter is super interesting too. I didn't get a very good mark because he marks hard on the essay and the exams and I'm not a history major but I still am so glad I took the course. Kislenko is super helpful in his office hours but they're busy
SUPER great prof, but this course was the bane of my existence...
Great proof, but super strict marker. Make sure to follow his instructions to the point.
He will call your generation a bunch of idiots, but he does it with love and it is easy to earn his respect. Not many assignments but they are hard. Lectures were interesting.
This guy knows how to teach. I had a WAY too full course load so I had to drop my only non mandatory course (this one) and I'm re-taking it this summer because he's so excellent and the material is so interesting. I walk away from his class having actually learned new things and still remember things from the first time taking the class. A+++
The smartest man I know. It's an honour to be in his class.
Interesting lectures, but midterm and exam were tough; not enough time.
Best professor. Really cares about the subject and students.
Best professor I've ever had! He is extremely helpful (if you put the work in) and knows the material like the back of his hand. Inspires students, respects you and wants you to succeed. Everyone should take a course with this man, it's worth your time!
this class will ruin your grade. dont't take it.
Dr. Kislenko is hands down the best professor at Ryerson. Although I received one of my lowest grade in his class, I don't care. In all my time in University, I have never taken a class that was so intellectually stimulating. I learned allot in his class and I feel I am a better person and more politically engaged after taking his clas
Dr. Kislenko is the best professor I have had in my 4 years of university. Not only is he insanely knowledgeable, but he disseminates this knowledge in an extremely interesting way. I looked forward to his classes every week and use the things I've learned to converse on a daily basis. I would highly recommend.
Fantastic lecturer & human being. He marks tough but fair, and is willing to listen if you have a real complaint about the marking; he bumped my TA's grading for my midterm by 10% (4pts) when I went to see him during office hours. He's also happy to spend as much time as needed to provide counsel & resources for essays/exams. Genuinely cares.
Great lectures and professor. You'll learn a great deal from his class. He is a hard marker. You have to put in A LOT of effort in his class. If you're willing to do that take the class. If not avoid at all costs as your GPA will drop
Absolutely amazing professor. I learned so much from him throughout the semester, and he is so inspirational. I did not miss one class, and loved all of his lectures. His passion for the subject is evident, and though he is a very hard marker, the knowledge that he provides his students is priceless.
Great prof. Tough, but crazy smart
This was my first class with Kislenko, & this was definitely the hardest yet, most rewarding class I've ever taken at Ryerson. I didn't receive the best grade, but he was extremely challenging and I was happy with a decent mark. I recommend attending every class, and going to him for extra help on your essay, he truly does care about his students!
This is not a bird class. If you have any sort of accommodations for school and are a minority, don't take the class. Kislenko teaching's can be white-washed, has joked about suburban asians before. Even if you have approved accommodations, he doesn't do much to accommodate because he and his TA's 'aren't paid enough'. Do it if you aren't. Engaging
Dr. Kislenko is great at lecturing, highly knowledgeable, and who rightfully evaluates your work based on its merit. I would recommend taking him. However, if you are bad at essays, I would think twice because he truly marks it on merit, and isn't a weak pushover - you need competence and diligence.
Fantastic professor, and easily one of the best at Ryerson. He's has amazing lectures and really wants his students to be interested in the subject matter. Show up to class, take down lecture notes, and you'll easily get at least a B. All of his marking is fair, and gives you help whenever you need it.
Kislenko has no consideration for students with accommodations or illnesses. Do not take his class.
Great lectures; not relevant to the course. He is all over the place. I received a grade of 0 on an essay, I did well without ease in all other aspects. Did not pass the course because he refused to mark my paper even though his TA's handed out "unapproved" essay topic outlines. For the material amount, this upper-liberal deserves 2 credits. Rude.
Hands down one of the best profs at Ryerson. His intelligence is outstanding, and his ability to lecture without notes is astonishing. Come to class, write everything he says, condense those notes, study it, and you'll get at least an A-. For the essay, ask him for help and advice. Canada ought to clone this man, we need more profs like him.
Never ever take a class with him. He WILL FAIL YOU without a second thought. Very insensitive. Only good thing about him is that he is passionate but he does it in a way where he looks down on you.
One of the best profs at Ryerson I've ever met. Amazing storyteller, his passion is infectious. However he failed my essay; re-grades are not allowed. So if you take this course, be prepared to commit and do your best and more. You will learn to fall in love with history but you won't do well in this course if you're careless.
Dr. Kislenko is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are amazing and he challenges you to do well (in a good way). He's also very accessible and willing to help out his students. As long as you're willing to put in the work, any class with Dr. Kislenko is totally worth it. You will learn a lot guaranteed.
What I thought was an intriguing course turned out to be an awful experience. Cant really elaborate more, just disappointed in the marking that changed drastically from midterm to final.
Arne Kislenko might just be the smartest man I have ever met. Most interesting professor at U of T and taking his first year Trinity course is an experience I was really lucky to have. Get ready to work though. You'll maybe get away with not doing all readings as long as you're at least somewhat competent, but he's really tough with marking papers.
Words can't describe how incredible Kislenko is I'm not religious but this guy is the messiah for the humanities. His lectures are fascinating, he's funny and engaging, but I've taken both his classes and they are HARD. If you show up to office hours, (and bonus if you go to IID lectures!), he will help you so much and you'll do way better.
Awesome guy, interesting class
Dr. Kislenko is by far one of the best professors at Ryerson. His lectures are engaging and interesting. Attending class is important because he does not post (or really use) slides. He expects a lot, especially in terms of the essay, but if you make an effort to go see him in office hours he will help you do well.
Dr. Kislenko is one hell of a professor. I respect the man because of his passion for history but his class was a pain in my behind. I'm not here to degrade him in anyway but Kislenko's class is not for you if have trouble with class attendance and writing notes based off of what he says during lectures because he does not have written notes.
Kislenko is one of the best profs! It is crucial to go to his lectures since he doesn't use/post slides. Make sure you're prepared to write, and write down everything he says! His exams are fair, seminars are fun and they expect a lot from your essay but he is willing to help you with it. You learn a lot, and he truly cares for your success.
Dr. Kislenko gives excellent lectures, he is extremely passionate and established historian. However, he is strict, if you want to do well in this class be prepared to put in effort. I met with Kislenko in his office hours and actively asked questions and finished with a pretty good grade. I learned a lot in this class but worked hard too.
Prof Kislenko is easily the best lecturer and story teller I've ever encountered. His lectures throughout the semester were honestly more enjoyable for me than most of the shows on Netflix I've been watching during the pandemic. He can be a bit of a tough grader tho if you don't know your stuff and there is a 25% participation mark so be prepared.
Absolute quality lecturer. One things for sure, he definitely knows his stuff. Very good at communicating information and makes sure to give you all the important details. Pretty strict marker, but hey, it's University, you gotta work hard. Kind Professor and is willing to help. I recommend you approach him before you write your essay to get advice
Dr Kislenko is a great lecturer but an incredibly tough grader. He tends to give very low marks for everything you do for his class and basically thinks everything you actually do well is really bad. He can be helpful sometimes with sources but generally I wouldnt take his classes again because he just lowers your GPA even if you do a good job.
I am not a history student and have never taken a history course before but Prof Kislenko made it understandable and exciting. It is a difficult course and don't expect to come out with A/A+ but expect to come out knowing so much new and interesting information !!! My TA was also great !
By far the hardest class I have ever taken in university. Extremely unreasonable expectations (3+ hours of PRERECORDED lectures & over 75 pages of dull readings a week, AND seminars), and expects that students know as much as he does about topics that he is an expert in. Lectures are long rambles and exams expect a lot of info in a short period.
He's a great professor and gives super in-depth advice during his office hours but he is an insanely tough marker. The expectations he has are almost unreal and I genuinely don't know anyone in my class who passed the midterm. Even though he's a cool guy and nice to his students, this class was just way too hard and for no reason.
Kislenko completely shifted how I viewed university. His lectures were very engaging and purposeful. He can come across as mean but I think it is a means of motivating his students. I genuinely think I learned more in this one course than in all of my third year of university. Do the readings! Or you will be embarrassed
I had Dr. Kislenko for History of Espionage, Terrorism, and Conflict (1900-1945); and enjoyed every moment of his classes. Sure, he will make you work for good marks, but he offers help, gives you sources he thinks might help, and makes what could be even the most boring classes the most enjoyable history lectures I have ever sat through.
Professor Kislenko is what you feared university professors to be like. If you are underprepared for his classes then it is easy to fall behind the wall of mounting work. The precedent he sets for his students is high which is nice to see. Overall good classes but be prepared to work for that credit.
Arne is a good man and professor, and his HST540 class offers an intriguing catalog of works regarding espionage and intelligence. But, he and his TAs are incredibly tough graders. If you do not follow the exact criteria for assignments you will fail the class, and class attendance for seminars is worth 1/4 of your final grade.
Hands down the best and most interesting lecturer. It's a privilege to have him as a prof even if his harsh marking is intimidating for students who are used to getting As; the experience and knowledge gained outweigh the lower grade. I'm convinced he could literally teach victorian literature & make it stimulating.Highly recommend this course&prof
Dr. Kislenko might be the smartest, most interesting man in the world. A world-class lecturer, his passion for history is obvious to all who attend his class. Dr. Kislenko will make you sweat for a good grade, but you'll be a better student for it. Always accessible outside of class and is always happy to help students.
Looking back years later, this was one of the most influential classes I took in university. I've never worked so hard for an A- in my life, but I felt better for it, and I felt like I earned that grade. I have had a continuing interest in history, global affairs, national security and intelligence services since taking this class back in 2010.
Be prepared to attend most/all of the lectures if you want to do well and participate in seminar discussions. Great lecturer if you are interested in the course material. Can be intimidating and a tough marker due to his contributions to the course textbook and work experience. Overall good/informative course if you put in the effort.
He's definitely knowledgeable and funny, but he's very opinionated. Don't expect very nuanced discussions in his class. Tough course and grading, but I learned a lot.
I never said it was going to be easy. He's a great prof though, super interesting guy and engaging lectures.
I really did not like this prof. He can be funny, but his hubris/extreme bias is shocking. A historian saying anybody with socialist ideas needs to take responsibility for the Cambodian genocide? He used to work in intelligence, he should think about checking his bias. Especially for a man who gave a Ted talk about the commodification of education.
You have to have passion and the ability to remember and recall history for this class. If so, his classes are phenomenal; his lectures are like listening to an engaging podcast that leaves you wanting more. He is one of the best public speakers I have ever heard and was very detailed in his feedback. You get what you give. Great Guy!
Prof. Kislenko is an engaging lecturer, but be prepared to work hard. Attendance is mandatory, and he's a tough grader. Utilize study tools like unstuckstudy ai to stay on top of the material.
Unlikely to get a good grade, hardest marker I've come across. If looking for a bird course he is not your guy. Unless genuinely interested in the course I wouldn't recommend. Aside from that, amazing lectures/content, prof seems like a good guy, and learned a lot. No question that you will love the course/prof, but will it be worth bad marks?
He's a very hard marker, you should be as detailed as possible on test/exam. He gives the option to do an outline for the essay & he will help you find good research for it which is appreciated. Course content is interesting, but he is a really hard prof to do very well with imo. Exam is very long. Dont take the course if you arent prepared to read
Incredibly disappointing. This is basically a Soviet history class straight out of a 1980s high school, filled with long discredited myths and a fixation on personalities rather than society and politics. This guy was literally a federal intelligence agent and uses his lectures as a platform to demonize left wing ideology, comparing it to Nazism.
Prof Kislenko is so honest and knowledgeable. Incredible class. Anyone saying he's dumping on leftism isn't understanding what he's saying, or is unable to accept the well documented facts of history.
You need to show up!!- his slides are mostly photos for one, but more importantly his lectures are so engaging and it really shows that he knows what he's talking about. Really great if you try. If you don't, don't expect him to push you. Seems mean but he genuinely wants you to engage and succeed. Posts so many opportunities for students.
Professor Arne is very knowledgeable on his history however, unfortunately if you are not a History major I do not recommend taking this class. You will not do well because no matter how much you study or attend class the material is heavy. He also is a very tough grader and if you don't do things perfectly you're definitely going to fail the class
Don't take one of his classes and expect to just coast through, history student or not. You have to put in the effort. Dr. Kislenko is a fantastic lecturer and is there to help you with whatever you need. Go to office hours! Ask for help! The material is difficult but it's worth the hard work.
A cunning & respectable presence I've never been able to shake off. An A means truly weeding out your own bad habits. His emphasis on detail, specificity, and strong work ethic is impactful. As is his attention to serious, clear discourse. I'd recommend if you aim to improve public speaking. Easier said than done to have these serious discussions.
