This professor is a grad research inorganic chem professor. He is not at all suited to teaching an introductory course like chem 1331. If you don't attend class at all, I gurantee you will do just as good (if not better) than someone who does attend every class. Just not a good experience to Chem 1 for anyone starting college. I reccommend just studying on your own, and not even try to listen to what he says.

Very uncommunicative and doesn't care enough. I missed a test due to a simple mishap, and he took extended periods to reply to my emails and would not provide information on how to do an appeal process upon request. Over, all not very engaging when teaching the subject.

This professor teaches actual chemistry, but not the chemistry relevant to coursework and exams. Most likely at the end of his lectures he would have a pop quiz so that you can make an extra 2% total to your grade. Be ready to teach yourself chemistry the whole semester

Professor Guloy is a nice guy with good intentions. That being said I did watch Tom Teets mainly and used the class as a supplement. He teaches off of slides, but the main problem is that there weren't many interactive example problems like Tom Teets did.

You can tell he likes teaching what he teaches but the only problem is he doesn't know how to teach. I had to drop his course and retake because I'm failing, his lectures don't help, if you take him just self teach, it'll be better.

Would take again

As of Fall 2025, the 1.9 rating seems misleading- there are worse Chemistry professors here. I doubted his teaching, but he covers test-relevant examples in lectures. Attend and take the pop quizzes- they're usually from the exam pool and helpful. Highly recommend PASS tutoring if you want to do well.

I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I couldn't. lectures were all 200+ slide ppts, with few examples. has a no question policy and often gave attitude if someone asked. has daily "pop quizzes" that can add 2% to your avg. never really told us what concepts would be on exams, or what to expect.

All he does is read the slides, which are online. There are pop quizzes at the end of (almost) every lecture that he uses for attendance, but they are only worth 2% of the final grade. Tests are worth 80% of the final grade, so STUDY. Don't bother taking notes over the slides; just watch Tom Teets's YouTube videos and go over the notes in his bio.

He's a nice Filipino professor but that's the only positive of this class. I do not recommend him at the very least, he's a slide reader for lectures and doesn't like giving examples for problems. Pop quiz guy for extra credit. Knick knack paddy wack

Professor has good intentions but just reads off the slides and gives pop quizzes for 2% added to your final grade if you do 90 percent or more of those quizzes. I have a 98 in the class but thats because I took AP Chem in high school and watched tom teets. Lectures are 200+ slide powerpoints with little examples and some unrelated content.

The proffesor is average, hes not terrible but also not good at engaging with the students. The number one way to get an A in this class is to do the practice exams before every test and the mastery style questions for the exams. By doing that you get an idea of every type of question you could get on the exam. Practice tests are very very similar

His class is so boring, I think I only went to like 3 lectures the entire semester. The only reason I got an A was because I took AP chem in highschool, and I think I would have struggled in this class if I had not. My best advice for the chem department at UH would just be take a bunch of practice tests and do the mastery. and do NOT take Guloy.

If you ever find yourself in an auditorium with Prof. Guloy lecturing, I pray for you, because only a supernatural force can help you get an A. I sat on those dirty seats wondering what past-life crimes earned me a professor like Guloy. His lectures felt like a life sentence without parole. Godspeed to future victims, your survival will define you.

I do not reccomend him. Test review is way easier than actual test and he never responds to emails. I had an error on my test and i had to email him 13 times for it to be fixed. Never take him pretty sure 60 percent of the class dropped
