very nice and fun teacher. he cares and knows what students wants.. all tests/number of tests and journals are formatted according to u. he allows u to reschedule any two tests or assignments (not final). will learn a lot of interesing facts about people
excellent teacher. lets you decide how many tests and what kind. what type of papers you want to write. unconventional teaching style you could say. you'll learn a lot of interesting facts that make you think twice about everything in society. lets you makeup 2 tests or papers. cool guy.
Great class, the students decide on how tests will be formatted and on how many papers they will write. If you are not interested in sociology going into this class, you will be by the time the semester is over.

He is a great teacher. If you have a class with students who like to participate in discussion you will be CRACKING up. He is really a funny man. Made sociology MUCH more interesting that I anticipated and I learned quite a bit. I will most definately take other courses taught by him. I cannot stress enough how funny he can be.
Nishimura-san is an AWESOME teacher! I cannot say enough good things about this man. He's funny, he makes class interesting, he goes at a pace that isn't too fast, and the best thing about him is his democratic way of voting for amounts of tests/quizes and papers due (it makes you responsible for it if you voted for it). Keep it up Nishimura-san!
I didn't think he was all that funny. I found the class to be confusing and hard to get questions answered.
Super nice and super funny loved his class, i didn't deserve the B but he gave it to me anyways! His tests get hard but he lets you design the lay out choose let art design it... towards the end it was REALLY hard but I learned a lot! Great teacher!
Funny and kind. He talked to me in Japanese sometimes. Class was hard for me but I tried to do my best because I really like the way he teaches.
This guy is great. He's hilarious and he makes the class interesting and fun. He's very flexible with how the class wants to be graded on.
Art Rocks!
ART iS HELLA COOL. HE'S FAiR AND VERY HELPFUL. iT iS ALMOST iMPOSSiBLE TO FAiL. THE ONLY REASON i GOT A "C" WAS BECAUSE i WAS ABSENT A LOT AND DiDNT DO THE READiNGS, SO i DiDNT KNOW MUCH ON THE TESTS. BUT HE GiVES A LOT OF EXTRA CREDiT AND MA
Friendly and interactive teacher; open to discussions. The tests are hard, but he's a fair grader. Overall, his class was enjoyable. I learned a lot.

THE best teacher at CCSF, he made me decide to change majors to Sociology!! Super clear lectures, Very open to questions, Funny, Open personality. Lets u choose the way u want to be graded- # of tests/essays AND lets u choose the format of ur tests. not extremely easy but impossible to FAIL. You ll learn a lot n get a lot of laughs here! TAKE HIM
he is awesome! he is clear, fair grader and he is funny...great combo!
This class is great! He's HILARIOUS. He lets you choose how many tests you get and how many papers to do throughout the semester. Everything is up to you and the class. He makes sociology really interesting and funny. I love coming to this class, but be aware. It is hard to get added into this class. It fills up quick!
great teacher! I really enjoyed his lectures. He's funny and engages the class. I highly recommend him.
Very fair, very helpful, Makes the class relatable and easy understand.
Art is one of THE best teachers I've had at CCSF. I love him and so does everyone else. Everyone should take him if they have the chance. He's hilarious and piques your interest in the material and he knows his stuff.
He is off the hook. I loved his extra credit questions on the tests that had absolutely nothing to do with the class or the readings and any answer to them would be fine. Great guy! take his class!!! check him out on myspace too
HARD CLASS especially if taking this on the internet. Besides the fact that i find sociology to be one of the most BORING topics on the face of this earth he was a good inscructor, his online course needs a lot more work put into it its really very quirky and you have to check your tests and quizzes to make sure the webct didnt screw up.
Art N. is absolutely hilarious. He is an excellant teacher and will have you laughing.
Art is a nice guy, but I think he’s a little busy with life outside teaching. Grading on the written assignments was harsh and not explained very well. Strange, because his written questions often included grammatical errors and required some deciphering. He makes himself available to student questions, and is always ready to talk about sports!
Dr.Art is pretty cool. He is a teacher you would have a good conversation with over a cup of coffee but in the class room his lecture is'int really about the exam but rather how his subjects relate to his life. Great guy but not clear on what he wants us to learn.
This is an online class. Mr. Nishimura's class conducts a safe learning environment. He's helpful. Lectures, discussions and are online for you to download. All quizzes, written assignments and exams are done online. 2 books required. Read the material, do the work and it's easy to get an excellent grade. I recommend his class highly.
He's the best and worst teacher. Best: His lectures are hilarious, and paper assignments are not hard. Worst: His exams are freak'n crazy. If you're a type of person who wants to major in sociology, this teacher is cool.
Best teacher i've ever had...Lets students decide how they want their course and is very flexible to meet the needs of individuals. tests are challenging, but he gives very helpful study guides and students may argue for extra points. VERY FUNNY with many stories
Art is a great professor! he lets the students pick and vote on how they want the class to be outlined for the whole semester. he likes students that speak their mind and ask questions and argue points. exams are pretty hard but all you have to do is look over your notes and read the book. recommend him!!
Great teacher to learn from. I an online class for the first time, and it was quite fun and interesting. I definitely learned a lot more than I expected to learn from an online course. The reading material, writing assignments, and topics were very interesting!
LOVE HATE - I never worked so hard for an A in a 3 credit class before. If you sit back & try to bs your way thru another lame humanities class WAKE UP, his lectures are smooth, his manner so nice - but his tests will make you scream and cry and pull your hair out BUT you can design your own tests, and email him about the papers and you'll do well.
Best teacher I've ever had! He is the reason why I've decided to major in Sociology! He's very funny, knowledgeable, and animated in his lectures. Provides great notes, can accomodate student's individual needs. You will learn ALOT from him mainly because he keeps you entertained and you will WANT to go to class everyday!
Excellent professor. Really brings his personality into the lectures thus making them easier to understand and pay attention to. Really gives you freedom with the syllabus, and even lets you sent your own due dates. I highly recomend him.
Getting something more than a B is hard! Stupidly enough, his tests are tricky. It seems he conceives the questions just to screw you. Flexible as for the form of exam that you want but be sure it is not going to be easy. He wastes a lot of time in class when he could go more in depth with the lecture.
I don't believe I had ever simultaneously busted my back learning the material and enjoyed it so much. I got an A for the semester and would totally do it all over again! Art is hilarious and prepared to help his students any way possible (customized test/schedules/papers). Hell, he even give out complete outlines of chapters! A+ teacher!
Do Not take this class online. Seriously. This teacher does not update his lectures to the book that is assigned. He doesnt even update the online tests that he assigns. If you know the material, then you ll know something is wrong, but if not, you re grade will suffer. There are way too many essays for an online class. Do Not Take This Online
Mr Nishimura is a nice guy. During his lectures he would go over the chapter being taught but nothing really in depth that would help on the test. The textbook is key to passing his course. I definitely wouldn't rely on his notes for his tests. Although he's very easy going, his tests are very tricky. Seriously. You better read that book. Lol.
HAHAHAHA!! He is so funny! Great teacher!! He made teaching so fun. TAKE HIM, he is awesome. He lets students pick how many papers and exams there will be and how many point they are worth. You get to choose how many papers and test to drop, when to exams will be, when papers are due. USE AND ABUSE ART is his model.
one of the BEST teachers i've had a city. hilarious. interesting. constantly keeps you engaged in the material. if you read the book you'll be fine. tests aren't hard.
Can be insightful & ocassionally comedic. Provides good break down of class material. Well rounded professor that caters completely to students, but has tendency to let insincere losers disrupt the class, take advantage of his flexibility, & take priority over dedicated students. Tests are a bit tricky so you'd better study hard
LOVE HIM!!! you get to customize your semester (within boundaries) so i made my tests worth more points and my final a mere 20pts so i could relax at the end. tests can be tricky, but if you know your stuff you should be fine. really great teaching style, i actually want to come to class to see what jokes he has heard.
Sometimes I feel sorry for this guy. He caters to all his students by customizing their schedules, making outlines and practice tests. His tests are confusing. Usually more then one answer can apply to the question, but he wants the BEST answer. Funny guy, but don't be deceived. I actually had to try in his class.
This was sociology of deviance.I loved the class, the teacher goes above and beyond in what he needs to do to accommodate the students. He teaches well makes course material extremely interesting. Extremely Knowledgeable about soc.
Art is a chiller. I got an A by reading the text book alot. Taking notes is hard because he goes off on tangents about life.
Art is an good teacher. HIS USE AND ABUSE ART is an good process of teaching... You just have to study for his class and read articles. Art's test is challenging but his class is worth taking. he can make you understand sociology in other way around to learn it. and he has a beautiful TA..
Sociology is an interesting subject so I actually enjoyed the class & readings. I took the online class. If you think the online course is an "at your own pace" kind of class then you are dead wrong. Expect a lot of work including discussions, papers, quizzes and exams. Art is available to answer questions or concerns. Great class! Great teacher!
Really cool guy. He let's you decide in the beginning how many tests and papers you want and how many points they're worth. He always makes thorough study guides for every chapter and just regurgitates them during class. I barely went to class, but I always aced the exams. I want to take another one of his classes (even though I don't need it)
He is the good teacher. He is funny and engages the class. He lets the students rule the class and choose a format of the exam like 20 Mcs n 15 T/F n short answers. But if you are not committedd to study like heck, then i suggest u DO NOT take him, because he is a very hard teacher. The questions the exam is so hard and a bit confusing.
I took his online course. It was disorganized and chaotic. Instead of a lecture he would give a weekly ramble about some topic. Seemed to base our grade by how often we interacted with the online chat group. A good way to get a nursing prereq done, but not much teaching going on.
I love his teaching style and the fact that you can choose how you will be tested. I diffidently recommend him to people who want to learn something. For my final grade i received an B when i thought i had a C LOVE THIS GUY
Dr. Nishimura is a great teacher but please do not let his flexibility fool you. His exams are not easy. You have to truly understand the material in order to do good on his exams. Oh, if you choose ID's on your tests, they are extremely hard. Your best bet is straight M/C
Mr.Nishimura is so friendly and opening mind!!!I had great time in his class and he enhanced my interest in sociology. He would let you decided your own test and paper format. If you show up to class and study his outlines, you would be fine. Tests were not that hard and there were always BIG AMOUNT of extra credit.Take him if you trust me- ^_^
Took his online sociology 1 class and enjoyed it a lot. The book that he uses is very interesting and informative. I highly recommend taking Nishimura's class!!!
"good teacher, but u have to play by his rules, even though it's yours"
I had so much fun taking Prof. Nishimura's class. He is a great teacher, highly interested in his field and teaching his students. The discussions in his class were great. Prof. Nishimura is very funny and interesting person to learn sociology from, highly recommended.
I REALLY LIKE MY TEACHER!! he's the "BEST". His teaching technique is awesome, always providing the class with great lectures, notes and going over class materials. Overall,I would have to say this is my favorite course.
Without a doubt, one of the coolest teachers ever. You just have to take at least 4/6 tests, 3/5 essays and he'll only grade the highest. Very helpful on how he wants his essays done, tells you what you should focus on/include. Test are kinda hard and worded a bit tricky. Attendance is not mandatory but go because he randomly gives extra credit
Awesome! All you have to do is ask-customize the class and assignments anyway that will ensure your success. He makes the class interesting and the information is valuable. I wish I could take all of the courses he offers. Art makes the learning process fun and imaginative. He is an all around nice guy. They broke the mold with him!
Art is flexible and understanding. He is fun and makes learning a whole new experience. He is by far the best professor I have ever had!He places you in charge of your education- it is almost impossible not to get through this course without an A. All you need to do is communicate with him.I wish he would teach Soc 2!!!!
Art truly is a students teacher. His lectures are entertaining and his grading system is beyond flexible. Study a bit for the first few tests and do some extra credit and you wont have to go to the last month of class. Got an A. Wish he taught more classes.
BEST TEACHER EVER. I love this guy. seriously.
Art's a true gem. He's hilarious, relatable, incredibly bright, and he truly cares about his students' success in his class. He basically lets you decide how the course is structured, which can really be to your advantage if you so choose. He can really get off topic, but when he does lecture, he puts things into unforgettable perspectives.
I took him for Soc 1 & Soc 3. He is funny, nice, helpful and has a very unique style of teaching. Very flexible with assignments; you can pretty much customize your assignments. You can tell he wants you to succeed & it is not hard to pass as long as you take notes, read his outlines and practice tests. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES
Funny & nice. VERY flexible with assignments. Lectures most of the time. Passes out outlines and practice tests for an upcoming test. Extra credit on the test.
Very tough class but he is so informative so it makes the learning process very easy! When I first took him in 2009 I got an F because I never did the work. However in Spring of 2012 I did a lot more work and overall I got a C. He's understanding and will also work with you.
He's such a cool, funny dude. You can customize your own schedule for tests and essays due dates. Whatever he teaches in class, you can just read from the book. His test questions can be tricky though. Whatevs, such a chill class.
I am taking him for SOC 1 online. He is a cool, understanding guy and is responsive when you need help. He has great ratings for in class it seems like, however, online he is quite unclear about what kind of answers he's really looking for his questions. This becomes unfortunate to my grades for him assignments.
Art is the best teacher at CCSF. Be nice to him or else :)
As a Soc major this was definitely one of the best courses I have taken thus far. Interesting class with plenty of room for your interests to grow, especially when it comes down to your grade! He let's you choose your style of tests and class assignments (but remember makes you more responsible for your grade in the end). Highly recommended.
fantastic teacher, I've since sought out his other classes. He's very interesting and while I would call him passionate he's definitely knowledgeable and inspiring. The class is really what you make of it, he'll match your interests and effort and encourages you to take charge of education to the point that he will work out a custom syllabus.
Art will allow you to make your schedule. However, don't let his kindness fool you, he still expects you to know the material. although attendance is not mandatory, do attend b/c at times he will give extra credit and it was that extra credit that allowed me to attain the point nec for an A and finish the class one month early.
Recommend not to take this course or you just take it at your own risk! Accessment requirements are very unclear!
His course is inspiring and most of the readings are comics which are easy to master.
Incredibly fair, hilarious, and informative. Can't recommend him enough. The best!
Nishimura is by far the best you could have in ccsf. I love that he lets students choose when and what will be on their testsessaysfinal. Although he seems "easy" you do HAVE to know the terms itll make the class very easy.
Online class. Initially, he is very unspecific as to what he wants from your in forum responses and essays. It is only after you answer that he tells you what he wants, but he will let you add on to your forum discussions in order to get back the points you lost + extra credit! Perhaps the vagueness is to make you "think," but it's really annoying.
He was nice and helpful, tests and quizzes were easy but he grades tough on the 3 essay assignments. I took him online and he was good, its an easy A if you're good with essays. I would take him again
The class was fine, he wasn't too clear although I can see how that could be an issue with most online classes. His paper topics were related to the material but ultimately were extremely time consuming because he wanted us to use the book as our source instead of relating the lessons to real life events. Feedback was vague but it was attempted.
Art is a fantastic instructor! Hilarious and entertaining. He gives you A LOT of freedom and creativity and will work with you to succeed. Super funny yet fascinating lectures, constantly challenging what we deem 'normal'. Tip: You have to read and critically think about the material if you want to get A's on the exams!
Nishimura is probably by far the funniest prof ever. He allows his students to decide how they want to be graded. LITERALLY! He also gives you the choice to divide up your points and how many papers you want to write. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's recommended so you dont miss out on lectures. This class in't your typical, but hes awesome!
He is an intelligent, funny and entertaining professor. I like his lectures although he rarely covers the full chapter for the exams, which means there's a lot of reading to do in the textbook for the tests. Tests can be difficult; however, you can customize the format at all times, and there is so much extra credit that getting an A is doable.
Though he is an entertaining lecturer in a lecture hall, his online class is a bottomless pit for time because of the way he teaches. As others have noted, he gives very vague weekly forum assignments, with no real guidance, and only lets you know what he was looking for when he returns your work with points deducted. Very hard to get an A online
He is funny and cares about the class; he lets you create your own schedule so it works to fit with your other classes. He lets the class choose how many assignments and tests you want but it also must sum up to the total points of the class. I might say it is an easy class but it also depends on how you are like a student.
Art is one of the best professors at City College. He really cares about his students and is not pretentious like other professors with his level of education. One thing about him is that you have to seek him out: If you are struggling, you have to make it a point to seek him out for help. Overall, do the readings and it's an easy A.
Art IS great & one of the few teachers here that allows YOU to take charge of your education. he gives clear grading guidelines by denoting specifically how many pts you need for each grade. by midterm, if you have enough pts for a C or better & are happy with this, you can stop coming to class. he doesn't keep you there & try & indoctrinate you.
Art is one of the best professors at CCSF! He allows you to create flexibility in your schedule and lets you pick when you want your assignments to be due. However, He does expect you to actually do the work, but gives out a lot of extra credit if you show up to class. Note: He lets his in person class pick their schedule, not his online class.
Took Soc1 over summer online and it was easy, if you read the chapters and do the work on time. His grading is fair, and he is always prompt at answering emails. Easy A.
Leaves all class structure up to you. Doesnt give extra credit. Lectures have nothing to do with test material.
He lets you make your own schedule so that's a plus if you know how to manage your time well. It's hella easy to fall behind in his class since it's a little too laid back. Lectures don't really reflect on tests but he does provide detailed chapter notes before each exam!
his assignment prompts are not clear at all, really confusing.
His grading standards and writing prompts are vague and he will dock you points on essays for not addressing something he never said he was looking for.
Do not take his online classes. Very vague, lecture posts is very short and very general. Maybe its better to take his class in a classroom because his online class is driving me crazy.
I enjoyed this class, the forums were tough for me personally but he allows you to follow up with more information for more points. The quiz's are timed but you get 3 chances. Fair grader when it comes to the essay assignments. Easy A! Take him!
I took his online class for introduction to sociology. At first I was a bit skeptical on taking an online class especially for a course that Ive never studied. Art is a very tough grader and is super unclear about what he wants in his essays and discussion posts. I constantly had to do follow ups and rewrites because it didnt meet his standards.
Seriously avoid taking this class. He's a tough grader with vague prompts. Grades seem to be arbitrary and based on his strict definitions of course concepts; he doesn't allow for students to interpret things through their own ideas. His quizzes are very specific, detailed questions.
Nishimura allows students to choose the class grading system. If the class schedule doesn't suit your specific needs then he will allow people to customize their own assignments or exams. The class is easy going and he goes off topic from time to time but there are several opportunities to bump up your grade with extra credit. Manage time wisely!
This guys thinks hes teaching at a 4yr college. Someone should remind him hes at a community college. Take this class if you want a teacher whos impossible. Good luck with this guy. Why are the 3unit classes harder than 5unit classes? Dont take him. BEWARE.
The first time I've had an instructor who is so laid back and ambiguous about grading/criteria, but it may be because this is his first online class since COVID-19. He is accommodating and will customize your due dates and quiz formats but you must REACH OUT. I prefer structure, so unclear and inconsistent guidelines/expectations give me anxiety.
Very laid back style but very passionate and accessible. I love his mini lectures but all the heavy text reading killed me. He's always super accessible and gives great feedback, but sometimes his instructions are a little unclear. He is super fair and very understanding, loved the floating excuses to change the due date of any two assignments.
The forums are the most challenging but he does give feedback and you can redo them if you don't like your grade. For the quiz, there are retakes. Get ready to read a lot! If you put the work into it, you will do fine.
He's a tough grader. Idk how some students got an A from him, essays with vague prompts. even when I did 3+ page essays & met every goal in the rubric my essays would still be graded very low and final grade was still a C. Doesn't allow students to interpret things through their own ideas. Don't take his class. You're better off taking someone else
Where can I start. This professor is outstanding. He encourages you to think for yourself. He also understands that you have other classes going on so he won't throw much work. He allows you to create the amount of work and exams you want. He allows you to work at your own pace. Anyone thinking of taking this class do it. Thank you Art.
This class is very unorganized. I often feel as though i do nothing in this class, due dates always change, prompts are unclear but he will grade you will like he gave the most clear prompt ever. Extra credit is available but it is also vague and hard to attain. Art is quick to grade and reply however the structure of the class isnt very good.
Took his online Soc. Problems course in Spring 2023, he is definitely a particular grader. He does give you opportunities to improve on your graded work if you don't like the score but gives good feedback inconsistently. Sometimes it's helpful but other times he was very vague. Tests & papers were also difficult but gives extra credit opportunities
Easy teacher. You decide test and assignment system. I was done with his class with a guaranteed A with a month left in semester. Do your homework and turn in 2-3 drafts for the essay for an easy A. Prepare for tests but he gives corrections. A lot of extra credit. Had him for manga/anime and sociology 1.
This teacher is the hardest grader I have ever encountered at a city college. I have not gotten full credit on a single assignment in this class, extra credit assignments included. The tests repeat questions and have horrible and confusing wording, his feedback is vague and redundant, and he seems to grade based on vibes alone with no listed rubric
Bro is easy...
You customize your own homework and test schedule like which teacher does that, Art does. Choose how many tests or hw you want and when you want to submit them. He is a very tough grader, but the amount of extra credit is insane. I would have a C without the extra credit and I passed with an A+. He has awkward humor, but still very funny.
Tests and assignment schedule is completely customizable, and he is very open to accommodating each individual student's situation. It was a fun time being in his class, and I still think about a lot of the things I learn in my day to day life.
Love the lectures, funny(good taste in anime btw), flexible with the grading/HW. Grade is based off points, don't become complacent just because he is flexible and you'll pass with an A. Grades a tiny bit harsh on assignments but the flexibility trade off is worth it. Offers extra credit on Fridays, take as much advantage of it as you can.
First off, he's a good lecturer and knows his things very well. Lectures are very intriguing and interesting. The only problem I had was grading/assignment system for the class. It just felt too flexible and vague for me, while at the same time being tough for grading. He is very accommodating and there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Art allows his students to customize their schedule, so you, as the student, determine the workload that is comfortable for you. The course load is straightforward as long as you follow the schedule you create. Just show up and do the assignments. He is accommodating. If you're a sociology major, you will pass these core classes with Art.
