No doubt about it, Professor Simon knows films inside and out. His ability to convey that into what he expects from his students is lacking. His main goal as a teacher is to make you look at film critically. He doesn't give a lot of tests because he cares about what you take out of the class rather, than making sure you memorize everything. Professor Simon's class can definitly get boring since he tends to lecture for a long time but you can tell he really cares about the material and is super knowledgeable. You'll always know exactly what to expect- he's not the type that's out to trip anyone up. He really wants his students to learn something about film. I recommend taking him.

I dont like this class. I feel as though if you were to take this class you have to be really interested in film or be a film junkie. He grades weird and his teacher helper is terrible she is not much help when you need her or him to be honest.

I transferred into this class to fulfill a gen-ed requirement, previously I had no interest in film. However, prof Simon's excitement and passion for teaching made me want to learn more. I looked forward to Prof Simon's lectures and insights into the films we watched. Study for tests and pay attention to lectures and you will do well!

I feel like he is very passionate about this subject. The exams were difficult for me but if you take LOTS of notes (like write down the whole lecture) then you should be fine. His notes did not help me on exams. PARTICIPATION IS IMPORTANT since he gives only 2 assignments for the semester.

Professor Simon is very funny and does care a lot about his students and job. If you are thinking about taking his film class for fun and because it will be easy well your wrong. As a criminal justice major I had no intentions of taking this class but I didnt mind being put in it. As a freshman the class is hard and tests are impossible.

A very nice and thoughtful professor. He's very engaging when he teaches and keeps you involved as much as possible. There are weekly readings that he makes you read and if you don't, and nobody else does, it gets awkward. But my main criticism is the final paper prompt, it's very unreasonable and not practical at all.

The professor talks for an hour and half gives us a 5 minute break then talks for another hour and half. There are no powerpoints or any actual visuals of what we need to take notes about. The only grades that we have had was the midterm, a project, the final and one 10 question quiz in the beginning of the sem. i dont recommend the class.

The class is pretty easy if you pay attention and take good notes. Most of the glossary terms are easily understandable. There's only 4 assignments, though. If you don't like lectures, you won't like this class. But college is all about lectures so if you don't like lectures you probably won't like college...

Prof lectures the entire time and it can be easy to get distracted. Only assignments are small online quiz, midterm, project, and final. No powerpoints, notes, or really anything to study off of. Midterm and final are extremely difficult. "Notes" are just based off what you can write down during class. Whole class was pretty lost. Films are old.

This class is entirely lectures and watching films. There are no solid notes to go off of, so you either have to write down important things yourself or have a solid group of people in the class to discuss with. There were only 4 graded things, the midterm & final, plus a quiz and a project. You'll pass as long as you show up and pay attention.

Professor Simon is so caring and enthusiastic about your perspectives on films! There are 2-3 small quizzes and 10 page paper that make up your grade. Pay attention, do the work, and you will pass. Though the material can seem boring at times, he makes it super interesting. Take Professor Simon if you care about film/film history!

If you really care about Film and TV history, you'll love Prof Simon. The material can seem boring at times but it's only because of how long the class itself is. Professor Simon is the absolute best. He really loves to hear what you think about the films and is easy to reach outside of class. A lot of people complaining about the course just have zero interest in film, which isn't a fair criticism. He's super passionate about what he's teaching, take him if you're into classic cinema!

Professor Simon is just incredible. Most of the negative reviews are from people who aren't into film which is fine, but not his fault. The class is formatted well, he'd debrief us on what we were about to watch, and then after it was over we'd have sort of a lecture/group discussion about it. He's passionate about what he does and he's hilarious!!

The negative reviews are from students who don't like real cinema, they'd rather watch Marvel movies. You'll learn a lot if you're actually into film.

Most of class is spent watching and discussing film- not terrible, but the long class time and lecture/screening ratio make the class drag on. Prof. Simon introduces very basic terms and concepts, but quizzes on names, dates, and specific details- take good notes. Very harsh grading, but few things to grade. No electronics in class.

I had a passion for film at one point so I thought this would be a fun class to learn about film history. This course was, at times, unbearable. It was an easy enough course where you could get away with sleeping in it and still pass. But the exams and homework weren't that bad/long. At the same time we didn't know our grade until the very last day

Only con is he takes very long to grade.

Be prepared to watch films you've never heard of, dating back 50 years or more. While I don't personally mind this, I found it strange that, in 2025, we didn't cover any films from the last 20 years. The class is fairly easy, requiring minimal effort to pass. There's no extra credit and he doesn't use Canvas for grades, but I don't regret it.
