I disagree. I got used to his accent pretty fast, and he really speaks English well and usually has perfect grammar. He's a sweet guy who really want his students to learn. Tests were a little tough but he outlines everything in a very clear, understandable way. Lots of notes, but very helpful ones.
Ratha does have a strong Indian accent but after awhile you can get used to it. If you have taken Econ in High School this class will be so easy you won't know how it's possible. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what he is saying, but he usually writes down everything important.
Easy class if you take notes. He is a little difficult to understand at first but he does write everything down so there's no excuse about his accent. He is helpful if you have questions and he is a very nice, timid man.
Very Nice teacher wants to help his students do well. He is the type of person that will bend over backwards for a student.
Yes, he is from India and does have an accent. But he goes slow and explains everything and writes everything. Just take notes, pay attention and go to class and you will be fine. The tests were fairly hard, they were all multiple choice. Tests only takes 20 min, even the final. Not much homework.
Ratha is a very generous grader, one day he just added 5 percent to everyone's term grade percentage. if you attend class along with taking good notes, which can be quite boring, you should be able to come up with at least a passing grade.
Dr. Ratha was very friendly and helpful toward students, but his lectures were both painfully boring and not very helpful. I rarely attended lectures and still managed to pull off an A- because all of the information came straight out of the text.
Good guy, makes ECON easy to understand. If you have problems with accents, tough**** pay more attention.
Very nice teacher. He really cares about his students! His lecture style is very slow paced though so for students that know a little about Econ you may find it boring. The tests are whats to be expected, not too hard of class. *note* Study the book! and take practice tests and you will do well.
Subject isn't too bad, just not very exciting. He is very willing to elaborate on topics to help you understand but, the language barrier was a big initial issue. Takes attendance!
Awesome!! He teaches quite slowly and repeatedly so that everyone in the class understands what he is teaching. HWs/exams were easy. Throughout the semester, he even gave several bonus points to everyone.Very understanding!!About his accent (not a big problem), it's high time Americans got used to foreigners speaking english!Take him for an easy A.
Good Prof. Is very willing to help. He goes slow enough for everyone to understand the subject. Accent is hard to follow at times, but he normally writes everything he says on the board so it's not too bad.
Doesn't push a political bias at all. Very objective. Just go to class, listen and get an A. Girlfiend took same class with a different professor and he was a liberial idiot than failed you if you won't vote for Kerry it seemed.
Awesome!
He is an excellent Professor! Yes, there is a litle language barrier, but after about the first two weeks you barely notice it. His main concern is that you understand economics. He tells us everyday that the key is "slow and steady"
He is super nice, super understanding, and really funny. He really cares about his students and wants them all to do well. A few times, I couldn't understand his accent, but for the most part, it was good. Extremely objective and doesn't force his views on anyone!! Totally recommend!
Highly recommened! This guy is very helpful and super nice.. patiently to students too!
Awesome professor!!! He wants everyone to do well in his class...even goes out of his way to give bonus points so everyone does well. He is a super nice guy and very helpful. His accent is a little difficult at times but it doesn't affect the class much. You don't even really have to go to class much...just read the book. Highly recommended!! =)
The best teacher I have had in a very long time. Knows what he teaches, means what he says, and is a great person. Very objective in the tests; completely unbiased. A role model for most of us. The class loved him, unanimous!
Great Teacher, loves America unlike Larkin. Would recomend
Awesome!!!What else you can want from the professor. One of the best teachers ever, always trying to help and willing everybody to do well.I'm sorry,he doesn't teach Ecom 206
He is a very funny man. His classes are pretty boring but they are informative. Sometimes hard to understand but if you do the bare minimum ammount of work you will atleast get a C. If you study a lot for the tests you will easily get a B or higher.
Wonderful prfessor! He cares very much about the success of his students- and he will remind you every day. Very clear expectations and no surprises. However, his attendance policy is rather excessive for the sort of class it is.
This is a pretty easy class. You have to take a lot of notes, but if you just make sure you get the practice test, it's a sinch.
Crazy attendance, but all around good guy.
He is the nicest guy you will ever meet! He is really funny and actually cares that we learn something in his class. Just take good notes and come to class.
marvellous!
He is really nice, kind of hard to understand. The tests are pretty hard. Make sure you read the book he teaches pretty much straight from it.
Has a completely new perspective...Got to take him! A great thinker, and therefore, an excellent teacher.
He's a great prof. You can learn a lot from his lectures. You can tell he really cares about his students. His tests are pretty hard though.
Excellent professor! 4 homework assignments and 4 tests. Very helpful.
Extremely hard class, very difficult to understand, doesn't speak clearly, always unavailable, doesn't respond to e-mails
I didn't show up for class most of the time and I still managed to pull off a C in the class. He is pretty funny, so class is interesting. If you show up once in a while, take notes, and read a little bit, you'll do just fine.
Clear, funny, simple, interesting, honest, inspiring, smart, hot...all of that and much more. Highly recommend any serious student of economics.
I think he is is fine teacher... expexct you to do your part. I never liked econ but I managed to get a C. True, it was not like easy easy but wasn't so hard either, and now I don't dread econ anymore. He even tells you how and where you can make use of what the lessons... like while buyining car, a house, and attending school, and so on.
can tell he likes teaching and it comes to him naturally. Cool Prof.
He's a pretty nice guy. He smiles a lot, which is funny. He jokes around that when you get a job and make money, you need to send him some because he taught you how to get a good job. I'd recommend getting the study book, because a lot of the test questions are directly out of it, word for word.
I got a litle confused towards the end of class. He cares a lot about his subject. I would not take this as a night class if possible.
Def. my favorite econ professor! Very interested in the topic. Gives very simple examples that help a lot. Makes sure that every student understands. Very very helpful. Seems a little worried about offending people but he never does. Smiles a lot. Jokes a lot which is entertaining. Take this class with him!
He's a really good teacher and is very good at explaining things. He will go at a pace that everyone is comfortable with and makes sure that you understand the material. He is part of the reason I decided to become an Econ major
Ratha is a super prof. I took him for 195 and stayed w/him for 205. Once you catch onto his slight accent, things will be smooth sailing.
Hard to understand him but he is such a sweetie. He's very intune with the class and makes you feel like you can do well in the class. The tests are fairy easy- if you read the chapters in the book and go over notes you should do fine. Takes attendance randomly.
Ratha is a great teacher and really wants his class to do well. Tells you when the test is going to be hard and the assignments are somewhat hard but he gives more than a week to get it done. Id recommend him, 4 tests, drops the lowest.
I also took him for 195 and now 205. Grading is very easy, he's very approachable, and def. wants to make sure the whole class gets it
he is great
My biggest struggle with this teacher is that the tests (which are worth 80% of your grade) are not clearly worded, probably because of the language barrier, so I always second guess myself. After finishing a test I always felt like I got about an A-, but ended up with a B- or C+. He is also very untimely with returning our tests and papers.
He is Great, if you wanna learn, that is!
Good prof. Really enjoys topic and enjoys teaching. I will take him again without question. Very smart person. online homework you have to pay for but is helpful.
He is an awesome prof.
A nice mix of textbook material and the real world. Interesting and effective teacher.
I have had him for a couple of ECON classes. If you go to class and take notes it's an easy A. I didn't use the text with my first class so didn't bother buying it for the second class. He usually requires you to purchase aplia for online homework but it's cheaper then buying the book. He seems to thoroughly enjoy his job.
Great Person, I'd take this professor again, I'm not really to interested in the subject but Ratha kept it interesting and bearable. Take Him!
He's is the most approachable prof. ever! he really cares about his students and will go out of his way to make info relatable. He does not look down on anyone, and approaches the subject without any expectations of his students. He's also a little goofy in class which help keep the classroom light feeling.
Great teacher
awesome professor
Great Professor! The first week or so you'll be overwhelmed by his accent but you'll be able to comprehend it easily come week 3. The tests are as fair as possible. The Applia Homework is easy. If you attend class regularly, take notes and study for the tests you'll walk out of there with a high B to an A. Hope This Helps!
At first can be frustrating bc the subject is hard, sometimes he goes a little fast, sometimes a little slow, but if you talk to him he will clarify. He cares about his students. Test are fair, workload is fair if you study you will do well. I would take him again.
The class is really nothing more than a bunch of graphs and charts. Really uninteresting but mandatory for business majors. Dr. Ratha is probably the nicest prof. I have had. Genuinely cares about your success. He curves the grades so dont worry too much, just dont be lazy and you'll probably get a "B"
I have had Ratha for both 350 and 474. For both classes, the material on the tests came directly from the notes he gives in class. He's really helpful and will take time to make sure the class understands concepts. His classes are interesting and a blend of anecdotes and textbook information. Would recommend.
At first he will scare you, and so will his accent because it is hard to understand him at first and especially if you sit in the back, but if you sit in the front and attend class, you should end up with a B atleast because he wants his students to understand the information and teaches it well.
He's a great professor, if you attend class & take his notes, you should be fine. This class does require studying so if you get behind read the book & go through his notes. He recently changed books so most of the material in from the text. HW on myeconlab is really easy. grades 3 tests & hw.
Very nice man, but also very hard to understand his accent! The aplia hw cost me $147 and we used it like 5 times total, which sucked! He always asked how we were doing which was nice. Genuine guy who will curve tests, but still very hard to understand him and his notes.
I'm not sure how Prof Ratha is getting such good ratings. His class is boring and he is very hard to understand. He is a nice guy and I'm sure very willing to help, but he makes the class boring and uninteresting. Also goes directly out of the book. Aplia and the book are very expensive and Aplia was not worth the money I paid for it.
Very difficult to follow and understand. Notes are very confusing and all over the place. The examples given to help you understand actually make you more confused. You are better off teaching yourself the material
I enjoyed the class and did not have a problem understanding Dr Ratha. Only time his accent was confusing was when he was talking about "micro" vs "macro" he says them in a very similar way. Aplia was a ripoff, barely used it, but do the practice exams on there and you will see some of the same questions on the test. He is a very friendly person
Took a couple week to adjust to his accent but truly he is a great teacher. He a great understanding of the US economy and developing countries plus he gives pretty good example in class. If you show up to class and pay attention you will most likely pass the class.
I loved taking his class for macroeconomics. He gave a lot of real-world examples and made everything very easy to understand. I wish I could take more of his classes!! Homework/tests were easy and he made sure everyone understood the material.
Really nice guy. He has an accent that is hard to understand at first, but you get used to it. He is sweet and tells good stories relating to the subject matter. I did not read the textbook and just went to lectures and got a B, but I had a friend who never went to class and also passed.
Professor Ratha is great. Accent makes it a little difficult sometimes to understand his lectures, no fault of his own. Every class he takes a minute to ask us if we understood the material. The final is not accumulated but it's on 4 or 5 chapters. Homework I found quite difficult.
Worse econ prof ever. I had to learn everything from the book by myself. Didn't understand his notes bc they were so messy. I didn't like Aplia bc the homework that you had to do did not match with what was on the exams. Get ready to read the textbook and teach yourself if you're taking him. Had a hard time understanding him and his teaching style.
Arta is a great guy. He really cares about his students, and will make ask you if he needs to go over things again. Show up for every class, and he will notice. I would take it again in a heartbeat.
Was a great prof.
Great guy. Tough to understand at times and the only points are from tests and a few from homework.
One of the worst professors I've ever taken. He just read word for word PP slides that are the exact same as the book, talked about his time in India for at least 15 min every day. He also goes past his time limit often. & he never once responded to one of my emails. Lots of hw, but final grade came mostly from exams, and the exams were very hard.
Mr. Ratha is a very nice teacher, seems very friendly and approachable. Lectures were incredibly boring, so much so that I skipped around 50% of the classes. I did fine in the class just paying attention (when I went) and going over his power points. Never opened the book. If you learn best through lecture, I might pass on this professor.
So different from others... Fresh perspectives and a gifted, inspiring teacher.
He's a professor with a slight sense of humor but not in a good way. There will be no notes posted electronically. Taking notes in class is challenging because you are not able to read his chicken scratch. if you took the 300 level courses then you will be fine. If you are an international MGMT/MRKT/FIN then you are not going to be prepared.
My favorite ECON teacher at SCSU. Pros: Great professor who cares about his students, strong knowledge of his craft, and his background from living in another country helped make this class worthwhile. Cons: his lecture notes may often be impossible to read and sometimes he will even write them as he teaching.
Just show up and don't be stupid. Easy A."DoubleWoo" Homework only once a week and you get three guesses on each question show you really should get 100% on all of them. Lectures are important, everything on the test he talks about it class and writes down with you in his "notes" or is on PowerPoint. Put in some effort and you'll get A's on tests.
This dude is a real gem. His accent takes some getting used to, but after that, his class is phenomenal. Although I did fall asleep in his class almost every day, when I was awake, he was always telling a good story or teaching valuable information. I read the online textbook to prepare for the tests as Professor Ratha doesn't teach everything.
I really enjoyed Professor Artatrana. He is a very pleasant person and I love his goofy sense of humor. I unfortunately couldnt remain in the class because of personal issues; however, I will be looking to take his upper level courses
idk but I dint understood him at all because he will talk about random staff, get off topic easily and don't help. if you need Econ to graduate take another but this because you will not learn anything and take 3 test.
I could hardly understand a lot of what he said in his lectures because it was kind of just all over the place.
You can tell he loves teaching, knows the subject, and means well. The material can be dense at times but it is good and useful knowledge. Clear expectations. Highly recommend!
Moderately easy class, but need to study hard. The class was easy towards the beginning and end of the semester but was very difficult in the middle for some reason. Lots of lectures but few tests given. Overall was a great online class Just be willing to study a little extra in the middle of the semester for this class. 1/2 material was on quizlet
Professor Rathas lectures and required reading can be long but it wasn't that bad. He's genuinely a good teacher and all of his tests are multiple choice quizzes. they're really not to hard as they're all open note and open quiz books! most of what he teaches is on quizlet so its a great study tool! I def recommend for people who need an Econ class
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The professor doesnt write his slides or HW and often seems confused by the textbook material. The tests have incorrect grammar in some spots. he says that the class is "easy", but the class average from the first test was 68%. I am an A/B student but I will probably get a C in this class because I can't teach myself well :(
Great professor, brings up lots of great examples. Cares about students and is passionate about teaching. Great class.
Prof. Ratha is kind and very passionate about economics. To be honest, I fully slept through every single lecture I attended, so the night before every exam, I'd cram and read the entire units worth of material. I still did well on every exam. Exams are tough, just make sure you understand the material. He posts all lecture slides online as well.
Mostly test based, every class is a lecture if you listen you will do well. homeworks are weekly and super easy.
