Great personality. Class is a lot of fun. Tests are hard b/c they cover so much material. Takes time to make sure you understand everything and has no prob staying after class. He is a very tough grader though - takes points away for eveything. Overall I would recomend him if you have the time to put in - lots of reading.
This class was intresting and lots of fun. He's really engaging and just someone you like right off the bat. Many people take multiple classes with him because he's so acessible and loves teaching. The class is done by giving a lecture then 2 to 4 people having a debate on the topic that they've researched and written on. He grades tough but fairly
GREAT PROFESSOR! Very engaging and enthusiastic. There is a lot of reading, but it's manageable. Plus, his drawings are really funny.
Good prof, he has tons of experience in the subjects he teaches and is generally a very personable guy. However, his class requires an EXORBITANT amount of reading and the tests are expansive... if you're interested in law he's a must-have, but if case law makes your head spin then this class is not worth the effort.
GREAT Prof! Exams are straightforward and fair! There is alot of material to read and know but entertaining in lecture, very helpful, friendly and approachable. BEST prof by far. Definitely take him if you have the chance, very knowledgeable about his stuff!
Good class if you focus. Professor is very knowledgeable and responsive. You learn A LOT from this GE. You're either going to hate or love poli sci after this class. :P
Great Professor. A lot of material but if you can figure out how to study for his test and stay on top of the reading, they really aren't that bad. He was always willing to put more time in helping his students understand the class better.
Awesome professor! Actually made me interested in POSC. His TA's do all the grading, but most of them grade fairly. He's also very understanding if you're sick or something else comes up. He's really funny, and more than willing to answer questions. Sincde he used to be a lawyer, he has a bunch of entertaining stories. Great class!
He was so funny, but this class requires a lot of reading and thought about the subject. If you apply yourself, you will do well and come away with some great information. He is pretty flexible and fair with attendance policies. Great Professor with a fantastic amount of knowledge, but be ready to learn!
he was such an interested professor to listen to in lecture for 100 and clearly knows a lot about politics. he clearly should not be teaching a 100 level class and always related to his law career. made posc100 way way too hard. great professor if you want to be a lawyer though
Knows his stuff. Gives straight-forward exams of pick 3/4 out of 5 short answers, then a single long final essay. TA's do grading in 100's, TA helps grade in 300's/400's. He attempts to get the class into the discussion. He's a soical guy and is a prof you'd enjoy going to his office in order to talk about things. I'd highly rec you take this prof.
Auerbach is a very popular teacher with a great sense of humor. It's imperative to go to his classes because that's where you'll learn the most info. His tests and papers are very tailored to a certain point, so study hard, and you should be fine. Also, take his class if you like to participate because he seems to favor those who do!
Auerbach is an extremely enthusiastic professor who truly enjoys teaching students, and helping them expand their knowledge. It's easy to do well in his class if you have all the notes from class, study for the exams, and especially if you go to his office hours and meet with him. He loves people who meet with him and/or participate.
Although I ended up with a B- in his class, I still appreciate his enthusiasm in teaching and working with students. He gave great advice in career and studies. I was able to improve my grades down the line with his advice and encouragement in other political science classes. He is a fair grader, though, and the classes are not easy.
Grades arbitrarily, has no real experience in the fields he teaches, and is generally confusing/confused throughout his lectures. Take him if you are interested in learning more about his kids than the relevant material. Basically the guy standing at the office water cooler telling fart jokes. I give him a solid C-
Great professor, especially if you're planning on or are interested in law school. He uses the casebook method (used in law schools) for 340 and 444, meaning you really need to keep up with the reading, but it's pretty manageable. Very approachable. Funny guy. Discussion-based classes, not just straight lectures. Fair grader.
He's a nice guy, albeit a hard grader. It is imperative that you attend lecture because that is basically what's on the midterm. He assigns a lot of reading, but as long as you attend class, you don't really need to do it. 1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 simulation and 1 final.
auerbach is extremely intelligent. tough grader, but justified in doing so because of how available and helpful he is. as long as you go to class you dont need to do readings because he covers the same material in lecture.
He is a great prof. He is a tough grader but you get what you put into this class. Definitely recommend him great prep for law school!
Professor Auerbach explains the subject matter in a very clear, comprehensive way. Unlike other law courses I've taken he doesn't hide the ball - he wants everyone to succeed. That being said if you're not willing to do the work I suggest you withdraw. If you don't keep up with the readings, participate and put in effort you'll not do well.
Great professor - that begin said, the class is hard and it is a good deal of assignments, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you're not interested in the subject matter. However, the subject matter is really interesting (discrimination, etc.) and Auerbach does a great job. Fair grader, but definitely not easy. But rewarding and interesting
Auerbach is what people who want to learn want from a professor; he is knowledgable, kind, funny, helpful, accessible, fair, and understanding. He is a clear communicator and has a passion for his work. But you should know that his classes are not easy--they are challenging. That said, if you put in the time, you will learn A LOT!
Horrible professor. Do not take POSC 395 just because of him. He assigns you this stupid outline which he grades like a mad man. I got an A in the course, but it was the worst 2 unit experience of my life. Laura Hill is horrible as well. Too much is expected from a course where you hardly meet the professor and there are no lectures.
Professor Auerbach says the first day that 444 is probably one of the hardest classes in the polisci department and that's not a lie but if you are serious about going to law school you should really take this class to see what you're getting into. And if there's any professor who can make the material and the class interesting its Auerbach!
Auerbach is probably one of the best professors I have had so far. He is a great lecturer and wants his students to succeed. His class is not so difficult (at least for his Supreme Court class). Just take REALLY good notes in class and study them really well. Do the reading to participate in class because he LOVES students who participate in class.
Art is one of the best professors I've had at USC. Even though this is a GE, this is one of my favorite classes this semesters and Art does a great job of making the class interesting. There is a LOT of reading for this class, but it's not necessary to do it to pass the class. Highly recommend this class. Art is a gem.
Such a raging liberal... Cant see past his own views when lecturing. Dont expect to get anything from a free market/pro business perspective from this guy. That being said, he's so incredibly easy it's embarrassing.
Professor gives clear learning objectives and has a very personable teaching style. He is very approachable and knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. The class overall is not easy, but if you are pursuing a career in law, this is a must take.
Week Format: 1st class covers legally related info to a political topic, next class are debates. You sign up for 1 debate a semester, where you write a 10 pager and debate for 30 min. Midterm material was vague. And there's a hard 12 page research paper. Final was clearer. I did learn a few cool things. Material is basic and he is a hard grader.
Learned a lot in this class. Auerbach is probably one of the best lecturers in the entire university. He's a tough cookie, but still worth taking his classes.
Auerbach is AMAZING- by far the best professor I have had so far at USC!! His lectures are straightforward and if you take good notes, do the readings, and study both you will be just fine.
I've given Professor Auerbach positive reviews for the past two classes I've had from him, but this course exposed his flaws. He is such a tough, nit-picky grader; he's quick to find every "mistake" (in his opinion, given his unclear grading guidelines) but glosses over what the student did well. A very frustrating and demoralizing experience.
Auerbach is a nice guy but I do not recommend taking this class unless you are extremely interested in learning about the USSC. His lectures are extremely looong, He loves to talk. All exams are based on his notes so you have to go to class. He is also a tough grader. His highest A is 93% which he does not always give. Avoid.
He is a nice guy and pretty funny. But the course is boring: after the midterm, it is the same thing as before it. The readings are long, but you do not have to read them all if you go to class. Midterm, final and research paper for 10 pages. He does not give A's. So do not take this class if you are not ready to work VERY hard
Professor Auerbach is one of the best teachers I've had at USC. He is dedicated to his material and the students in his class, always enthusiastic to discuss class topics and any questions you might have. He's funny and makes lectures on otherwise dry court cases interesting and relevant. Would recommend taking any of his classes!
He's a fantastic lecturer in POSC 426--very organized and concise. But I don't understand his grading criteria at all. POSC 395 is a ridiculously structured class with by far the most busy work of any college class I've ever taken. That said, 395 is a great way to get extra credit and graduate early while getting job experience.
Enjoyed Auerbach's 426 class, especially as a non poly-sci major with no intention of going to law school. That being said, I got one of the highest grades on the midterm (an A) but a B in the class. He graded the final essay WAY too harshly- I have 2 AP Eng 5s plus two As in Writ 150 & 340 and feel like i deserved an A but got a B-. Be careful.
RIDICULOUS. The assignments for this class add up to an absurd amount of additional work (esp when we are ALREADY WORKING). Assignment descriptions/criteria are vague but somehow grading is SO picky - its maddening. By far the harshest grader I've had in my 4 years. Totally unrealistic expectations. Maybe hes better in lecture? Best to stay away.
If you care about your GPA or taking a class that is actually an enriching learning experience, do not take a class with this professor. He's the worst. I cannot emphasize this more. Just don't.
Worst professor I've had at USC.
The course was helpful in determining my career path.
Prof. Auerbach is a fantastic professor. Sure, he is challenging but that should be expected at a distinguished institution like USC. Do your work, ask questions, meet him during his office hours and you will be fine. This is my third time taking him, so that says something.
He is an engaging lecturer and gives excellent guidance whenever its asked for, whether it be about assignments or upcoming tests. After taking two of his classes, Idefinitely recommend him.
This was the hardest major-based class I took at USC, but it was definitely the most relevant if you are planning on law school. The tests were challenging and the lectures were heavy but I grasped the concepts and cases better than my other undergrad law classes. He's easy-going and accessible at office hours. Learn the cases early on or else.
Arthur Auerbach is a great lecturer and truly cares about the topics and his students. The class is very difficult so don't take it if you aren't interested in the subject. Reading and taking notes in class is essential, but if you pay attention the class is very manageable. He is very clear with his grading criteria and accessible outside of class
Among the BEST POSC professor in the school. His course is extremely unique in that it's a mix of law and POSC content. The professor speaks about law and its effect on politics. The content of this class was not easy to put into practice on tests. However, the content itself is extremely interesting and somewhat simple to grasp. Take this CLASS!
The best professor in the Political Science department! Sure, he may seem intimidating, but he is a really a nice guy. There is a lot of work to be done in this course (and a ton of reading), but it is all worth it. His knowledge in politics is unparalleled, and he does a superb job in tying in American law into this course. You will not regret it!
thought this would be an easy class because it is an internship class but auerbach is a very tough grader. very nice guy to talk to but he is an extremely hard grader and not emphathetic when it comes to your grades.
Very engaging lecturer- will keep you entertained and knowledge about the subject matter. He is also a really nice guy who has great insight into the content. The class doesn't require attendance, but it is definitely worth going to every lecture because he won't put you to sleep and will help explain the concepts. Great GE
This is a very interesting class but shouldn't be a GE. The course content sometimes felt really inaccessible and I can't imagine being able to follow along without having prior experience studying poly sci or law. As a GE I give it a 5 for difficulty, but if it were only for poly sci and pre-law majors it would be more of a 3
For an internship class the homework on the "side" is just way too aggressive and Auerbach is an unreasonably tough grader who gives hardly any feedback. If you're a favorite of his from conn law, Unruh, or another class/org you'll probably be fine. But if not, buckle up. Not understanding at all & course assignments unrelated to the internship
Prof. Auerbach was great to work with. Ive taken this course twice and both times thought the amount of work was manageable. The workshops required are also fun and enable you to meet interesting people in politics. This class is a great experience.
Auerbach is a good lecturer and knows how to keep subjects interesting. However, if you are looking for an easy A or need to protect your GPA, do not take his classes. He is one of the hardest graders in the department and will make you bust your butt for a grade that won't even holistically reflect your work.
Def a good class to prepare you for law school. 2 midterms, a final, and a paper make up your grade. You need to know the cases well but pay attention to his analysis in class. We only used the CLP book and even then you can look up cases online instead. Hard class to get an A but if you study hard you could get a B. He is a really good prof tho.
One of the worst law courses I've taken at USC. He lectures all of the class and doesn't keep students engaged. You are better off taking a LAW class instead of POSC.
For 2 units, the class can be pretty time consuming. You have to write a 10-page paper at the end with mini write-ups throughout the semester and attend 4 activities. But Auerbach explains the requirements well, so it's not too hard to get an A. Follow his instructions and keep him updated on your research/internship and you'll do well.
Really interesting class if youre into polisci or pre-law, but material can often be a bit dense for someone taking it just as a GE. Great professor, makes lots of dad jokes, and keeps you engaged during lecture. Two papers based on SCOTUS cases that are kind of difficult. Hopefully your TA is good and can help you out or go to office hours
Very interesting lecturer. While I enjoyed lectures, I would only recommend this class to people who are pursuing law or policy or something related to those areas because so much material is covered and there's a lot of readings I didn't do bc I didn't have the interest (prob why I got a C). Help is there if you need it but not in easy A.
I really enjoyed class with Prof. Auerbach. I found that his lectures were really interesting even though the subject can be mundane at times. I felt he clarified legal jargon into actual english. I really enjoyed the subject and Auerbach is just a funny guy. He does care about his students. Only drawback is the TA's were tough graders.
Lots of pomp & circumstance while trying to frame himself as youthful and funny. Seemed less interested in student outcomes than in voicing his own opinions. Also seemed hellbent on normalizing neolib perspectives only Im a pretty liberal guy but... insert slanted perspective thats the 2010s version of but we need to beat the Red Threat.
POSC 395 is a great class in that it allows students to take an internship for course credit, but the work associated doesn't make sense given that 4-units requires 20 hours/week of internship work. Auerbach is also very unclear when it comes to grading criteria. Internship eval is worth 40% though which props up the grade.
I can see why people don't like Prof. Auerbach, considering he is a very tough grader and has a bad habit of talking over students. However, I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and thought-provoking in class discussions. Only complaint is we didn't get much clear guidance on the final paper (even after going to office hours).
Not a bad prof, but workload makes no sense for a GE. Have 2 essays and 2 tests, but the grading criteria is very unclear. Lectures are informative but don't need to attend to pass class. Essays get about 3-5 weeks to finish and test focuses on roughly 10 out of the 100+ terms you'll learn about.
Lessons are interesting and pretty helpful. Exams are absolutely unreasonable though. With many TA's and different grading systems, some would receive better scores than others. The professor says not to write an essay the day before but expects us to write it in 30 minutes for our midterm.
JEP extra credit saved my grade. 100+ reading/week, heavy workloadctures. Very unclear instructions on any assignments, and the final topics are too vast for you to study it all. If you need a GPA dropper, I recommend taking this class.
i really liked the class in general. i think there are way too many assignments, especially since I took this class as a 2-credit and that the grading was definitely harsh. however, prof is so nice and super knowledgeable. i think the grading really depends on who you take your internship with.
For an internship class it is a heavy load. My internship was for 120 hours for an 8-10 page paper. I think the class structure is just a lot for only a 2 unit class, but he gives you good feedback on the papers. Just try on the papers and talk to him if you have questions and you should do well.
Auerbach is a great professor and I learned a lot in his class. The topics covered were interesting and I took this class as a Political Science major. However, he makes you work for your grade. Spent a lot of time on papers and exams, but did not read the textbook or readings. Take the class if you're a poly sci major but not as a GE.
Graded on case analysis paper (3-4 pgs), midterm, research paper (10-12 pgs), final & section attendance/participation. Tells stories from his career which helps break up lecture and make it more entertaining. Lectures are clear and posts helpful slides. Assigns a lot of reading, but most of it isn't really necessary if you pay attention in lecture
Auerbach is awful. He thinks hes funny and a fair grader but really he just likes to grade you like youre in law school. Most of the class got a C or less on the midterm and he gives a paper that is graded very harsh even though he said it was gonna be an opportunity to raise your grade. Never take him even if you have to hes not worth it.
Prof. Auerbach is great, but this class is not easy. He grades fairly, but definitely not easily. NOT an easy A, take it because you want to learn about the subject not because you're hoping to breeze through. He is very thorough in his feedback which is awesome, and he has really cool stories from his career. Hi Prof Auerbach :)
Very interesting lecture content. Knows how to make Con-Law fun. Great lecturer, not such a great professor. Readings are necessary to understand what is going on. He isnt very understanding. Whole class is ran by him, no TA involvement. If you are a LHC major, I would go a different route. Too much work. Decent class to take P/NP or Audit
Great prof. Don't interact with him too much. I have taken this class multiple times. Your experience really depends on your internship. There are so many assignments. He is a strict grader but I have gotten used to it over the semesters. Great way to get credit for internships. Always willing to help. He rounds grades if you ask!
it was clear he didn't have much faith in our internship team and was just trying to get through to the end. not very accommodating to personal issues and also an inexplicably harsh grader with ambiguous feedback. i did the research internship and it was more of random googling than i expected to be doing. felt like my work was useless at the end.
Extremely tough grader, and just an overall very rude person. Not at all accommodating of personal issues and begrudgingly fulfills university accommodations. Does not seem to care about his students at all, unless they are the gunners of the class. If you are an average student, he will look down on you and be extremely rude.
I had multiple personal issues during the course - Prof. Auerbach was accomodating, communicative and respective of all of them. He helped me navigate through them while not letting them adversely affect my grade, and I'll always be thankful to him for that.
He's unreasonable with his grading--says he couldn't even ace his own exams/papers. His grading is so strict and arbitrary, and he doesn't clearly communicate how to perform well. Also put cases on the final that weren't on the review sheet... not to mention the review sheet was nearly 100 cases just for only a few cases to be relevant... avoid!
I think most comments are quite accurate about Prof. Auerbach. Some things to add: 1) though he sometimes instilled his political beliefs in class, he listened to other perspectives and would discuss them with you during office hours; 2) be prepared for timed, written exams that cramp your hands; 3) read the cases not just Oyez and do the brief.
Arthur Auerbach is not an easy person to work with. He is very hard-headed and a poor communicator, I barely interacted with him as he was managing the POSC internship program not my class but when I did it was a struggle every single time.
Difficult class but he makes it very worth it with the most entertaining and insightful lectures ever
Auerbach is an amazing and lively professor! His class is reading heavy but almost no readings show on exams. Two papers and two exams make up ur grade and attendance is mandatory in section. I recommend this class only if interest in politics or u will not enjoy this class!
Auerbach is one of my favorite professors! He is super down to earth during class, accessible and fair when it comes to assignments. Lots of reading but the midterm was reasonable. Take advantage of office hours and discussions. Overall, I really enjoyed the class, was challenged throughout the semester (in a good way and learned a lot!
Auerbach's lectures are interesting if you're interested in law. However, as a non-polysci major, I would not recommend this class for a GE. There are way too many terms/theories/cases that you need to memorize. It's also a pretty time-consuming class with two papers (one of them 10-12 pages) and two midterms. Pretty much impossible to get an A.
Nice guy, good class to take if you want internship experience. Low key a lot of work for a 2 unit as you have to attend 4 events in the sem and write an 8-10 page paper, but it's manageable if your internship isn't too demanding. Grades pretty fairly, a little bit of a stickler. Grade is inevitably determined by how your boss grades you.
I have seen a couple of reviews call him outwardly political, and I disagree. The only political thing I heard him say in the lecture was that global warming was real lol. The experience in the class depends on your TA (I liked mine, her name is Kayla), and lecture attendance is not necessary, but I would go. Not an easy GE class but good overall.
a 18 page research paper, super difficult midterms, and lots of memorization. not worth it.
Professor Auerbach's class was great. He's a great lecturer, a fair grader & helpful. Exams were a gamble for what would be on them, but he pretty much sets you up to pass if you pay attention, take advantage of the resources & take some time to study. If you don't have the time to put into this class, don't take it.
Personally, this class opened my eyes that I wanted to do POSC through the good and bad. If you are going to take this class: go to office hours with your TA. Your TA will be your main supporter and the person who will assist you the MOST. I rarely ever talked to the professor and loved my TA (Kayla). Tips: study the terms, forget the readings.
This class is pretty interesting but DON'T take for a GE like I did. It's a lot of work and caused me so much stress. The JEP opportunity is good but I don't know if it helped me that much in the end honestly. Beware of TA Henry, he's known for being a hard grader. Auerbach has a lot of knowledge and his lectures are really interesting!
Auerbach is a respectful and inspired professor who cares a lot about his students, and it shows. His lectures are amazing - he often goes off-topic with great stories from his time as a DA, and he's always making students laugh. Papers/exams are graded somewhat hard, but if you show up and put in the effort it's very doable.
Great class if you're interested in the topic, but not for a GE. I took it toward my major and loved it, but definitely had to put the work in. Lots of hard reading that is somewhat important to the class. Don't skip lecture and you'll do fine.
Literally the best professor I've had at USC. His lectures are amazing, and he is so knowledgeable about political science. He is also very personal and tells amazing stories that relate to content during lecture. This class had the clearest grading criteria I've seen, and the TA's are helpful in making sure you understand the content.
Professor Auerbach was alright at managing the internship. He was accessible via email which was helpful. However, his requirements and assignments outside the internship were not great. His paper page limit was based on your units and was almost 12 pages for the highest unit. I learned more in the internship than for his writing requirements.
