Art (as he prefers to be called) is a great guy! He truly cares about students, understands when the material is difficult, and strives to make the class interesting. Very fair exams and fun special projects. I highly recommend him.
Art is a really awesome teacher. There are no surprises on the tests & the projects are pretty cool. He makes sure his students learn the material and makes it easier to understand. I am defnitely taking his FIN 456 class. If you show up to class there is no reason you will not be able to pass. I highly reccommend him.
Art is a great guy and professor. As stated, if you go to class and pay attention you shouldn't have a whole lot of trouble.
I have nothing positive to say.
His tests are hard. You have to read articles. However, good thing is he curves a lot at the end. Some people like his teaching style. I guess it depends on whether you like his style or not.
The textbooks were unnecessary since the course focused on the articles and powerpoint slides. It is difficult not to get close to 100% on the assignments. The final exam (open book) is the big differentiator. You can do well on it if you complete and understand all the readings, though there are a few questions that are in the realm of trivia.
Art is really nice and tries hard to keep things interesting/funny. Don't underestimate the tests. Going to class is pretty important because some test questions are based off of things he mentions briefly in class. If you don't like public speaking just a heads up there is a 5 minute country presentation.
This guy is the most boring professor. Mundane, only reads what is on the slides, does not use powerpoint. Of the 2 tests before final, there have been a total of 2 A's The class average has been around 73%. Easy 5 minute presentation, paper is not hard, oh and if you take a Wednesday 3 hour class, be prepared to stay around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Class is boring. All semester you just watch other people present. Presentation graded easy, bring food! Tests are hard and trivial. Make sure you understand what was discussed in all the articles. Forget the stuff you think actually is important. Grade works out in the end. Easy for fulfilling FIN elective or int. business credit.
He is a really nice guy who does not attempt to power trip like other teachers. It's very simple. Go to class, study the slides/material he gives you in class and you should get at least a B. Also, he graded tests on a curve so he went out of his way to make sure people didn't bomb the tests. I highly recommend him.
Not a big fan of this class. Personally, I find it to be very boring. That's likely because the material is boring. That's actually what makes this a hard class because you're not engaged and zone out... I find myself on my iPhone playing games instead of listening to what Art has to say. If you have a short attention span, don't take this class.
Great teacher. Other comments regarding him being boring must be from those who actually don't want to learn about finance. Recommend you mark exactly what slides he goes over and what he skips, as that's how he makes his tests.
This class is BORING! I am extremely interested in the material and it can be interesting but the way it is presented is just world for word from a ton of ppt slides. Tests are really difficult, I studied for at lease 15 hours before the 1st 2 tests and didnt get higher than a C- on either (and I've never got a C before) Class is Horrible!
This class sucks. It's difficult only because of the teaching style. Class is taught by taking 100s of ppt slides on a projector, reading 1 sentence on the slide, then going to the next VERY BORING! Got a B only b/c the project helps your grade out a ton.Tests were horrible! 50% of each class is students giving presentations! No Need to go to class
Was a decent class but like others said paying attention is the hardest part. Presentation and project help out your grade a lot, almost everyone gets 100% on them. For the tests make sure you know what he wants from the articles, a lot of test questions come from articles. I recommend printing of his slides and writing on them when he lectures.
Art is a great teacher. He is very organized and always has backup overhead slides in case the PowerPoints don't work. PAY ATTENTION TO THESE!! 80% of his exam questions will come right off these slides. The other 20% will come directly from comments made regarding these slides that aren't s written down. Study the slides and take good notes.
Took this class and 456 at the same time and this one was pretty tough. There was a lot of material covered in class and it made it difficult to keep up. Just take good notes from his lectures ESPECIALLY COMMENTARY ON THE SLIDES. The slides you can review before the test, but he doesn't always write things on them that are exact test questions.
Art is awesome. I never ever use the textbook. Class consists of 4 exams + the final. He takes your 4 highest scores. Plus a lot of free points with VERY easy weekly assignments. Exams come almost verbatim from his lecture so you have to go and pay attention. He usually lets the 3 hour class out a little early
This class is impossible. So much information is covered. PowerPoints for each chapter are minimum 50 slides each. Exams cover anywhere from 6-10 chapters. Final covers 20 chapters. No exam/final reviews or study guides. Do decent on the homework, should be able to pull at least a C.
Art was very nice and engaging, with a great knowledge and experience in Finance. He is a great teacher but at times I think he thought we all knew what some things were already and if you don't ask him to explain things he'll keep on going, so ASK QUESTIONS or you won't understand. Overall great teacher, take him!
I have had Art now for 331 and for 461. Pay attention, take good notes off his Powerpoint slides and do the very clear homework assignments that are due each week. You may not get an A, but you will do well! Ask questions, he is very interested in talking about current events (and he knows his stuff), so if the class is boring, it is your fault.
Took this class online. Easy A, but the professor never responded to any emails. It's a pass/fail class and you can take the quizzes at the end of each chapter without even doing the lesson. Great for an easy, 1 credit class but useless in helping me learn about personal finance.
Interesting lecturer who has a lot of real-world experience and stories to offer. Takes forever to respond to emails, but the need to email him is rare. Lays out course expectations explicitly, and his tests r fair and straight forward. Would definitely recommend him. Focus on the slides, vocab at the end of the slides, and the articles he posts!
FYI I have received an A for this class. I can tell you, Budolfson is a terrbile instructor. There is nothing original about this class and he is merely coping parts from the book, puts them in powerpoint and then reads them to you, nothing else. His teaching style and quality is terrible. Please take my advice and avoid him by any means if you can
Cool guy. The class is pure memorization so it is possible to do very well if you spend the time reading the book, slides, and cases.
Great Professor, however the material is very dry. He is very up to date on current events and shares insight on them as he goes through the material. Most of the test is memorizing terms from the powerpoints, but he also includes questions regarding stories he told in class. He is very helpful and willing to spend extra time with you if needed
I'm a book learner, so his teaching style made it difficult for me to get a good grade because he tests you on random bits of information he utters in class. The dude is really nice, but if you learn best from reading textbooks, look elsewhere.
Tests are super easy, 90% is commonsense and/or straight from his powerpoints which he posts. The other 10% are articles he posts or things he mentions in class. Interesting enough, super nice and super easy
The professor is very nice and cares students. Take the class if you need the class. He is knowledgable about Finance.
The professsor is intelligent about Finance. if you are finance major, take the class and ask questions. It will benefit ur career.
He is very dry and hard to hear unless you sit in the front row. Tests you on lots of random numbers in articles that you would never pay attention to otherwise. Hundreds of slides to memorize per exam. Besides that, pretty easy and little to no homework.
I really can't understand anything from him. Even though I got an A-, I would not repeat the experience. If you want to learn, find a different professor.
Art's class is completely straight forward. All of his exam questions are pulled directly from his lectures. Homework assignments are easy credit. If you don't plan on showing up to class, you'll fail. If you do show up and take notes, you'll be sure to pass. I would take any class he took again.
Art's experienced & has real world knowledge on concepts discussed in class. This is supposed to be an intro class to how finance works: should be very limited pre-req knowledge. He assumes you know certain terminology & doesn't bother to explain himself. He doesn't lay down foundational concepts well. Reads slides to you that he took from book.
Art has a great deal of relevant professional experience, which is vital for someone teaching this particular class. If you are a finance major you NEED to pay attention in this class, and you should do well or you might want to contemplate changing your major. If you think tests are really tough then you either don't go to class or don't listen.
5 exams. He drops one. Exams are based off of slides and in class examples he gives during lectures. You must go to class to get the extra information he provides. Tests will have questions like, "Art said this in class what does this mean?". Overall, lectures can be engaging, but they are very long
Art is a really nice guy and you can tell he cares about his students. Offered extra credit when he though test grades weren't as good as they should be. Interesting guy and has a great dry sense of humor.
Took his class just to get to 12 credit hours. It was a pass/fail class that was SUPER easy! Finished the whole class in a few hours and learned some stuff along the way!
Super super easy. It's pass or fail and you get unlimited attempts for everything. All you need to do is pass all the quizzes which opens up the Final Exam. Then get at least a 70% on the Final and you pass. If you don't get a 70% try again till you do. Again, SUPER EASY class.
All of the test questions are from the slides and current events discussed in class. Probably 15% of the test questions are from class so show up and pay attention. The lectures can be very dry sometimes but paying attention helps out a lot grade wise. When there are assignments he does them in class to show everyone.
Took FIN 123 online to get 12 credit hours. This class is so incredibly easy it could be completed in its entirety in just 1 day. You watch a video, shot by ASU students, answer a few questions, and move on to the next video. Exam has same questions from quizzes. Impossible not to pass, a C or better on final gets you the 1 credit.
Insanely easy class but not very helpful unless you're actually motivated to learn. I ended up skipping the videos and guessing on the tests until I got the answers right.
This is the minimalist's dream course. Pass/Fail class. Unlimited attempts on quizzes and final. Most is common sense- I finished the entire course in less than an hour, didn't have to watch the videos. Move at your own pace style class. Easy Pass for 1 credit class.
Dry professor that whines about how he is "overbooked" on teaching classes and somehow thinks this is an excuse for performing unenthusiastically in the classroom. Then he wonders why the class averages 54% on an examination and blames everyone else for not paying attention. Art needs a reality check & a lesson in accountability.
This class is self-paced, as soon as you finish one chapter you get access to the next. There is only 14 chapters and a short video goes with each chapter. I finished the 14 chapters and final in a day. Each chapter can be retaken as many times as you want and you can retake the final as many times as you want. I recommend for an easy 1 credit!
Self paced and super easy. just need a 70% on the final to get a passing grade of Y. You can take all the tests and quizzes unlimited times and all you do is watch a few videos to pass. 1 credit class.
So, how can I put this the right way. THE WORST TEACHER EVER. People say you need to attend class, but the problem is you wont get anything. The way he lectures is just... I am about to finish this course and honestly I gained nothing from it. Avoid at any cost, even if it means delaying you graduation. Do not take it with him.
Most boring class ever! and he blames students for the low averages. I got my worst grade in a class since I started school.
Your entire grade consists mostly of exams, 500 points and total and 400 of those is the exams. I personally have a a hard time with classes that are based solely off of exams, and felt he did not care that most students struggled to pass his exams. Only lectures from powerpoints and does not care to put in much more effort than that.
Look, the guy is a good person; I have asked and talked to him about industry and his expertise, but when it comes to being a professor he's not good. Like at all. He has provided ZERO insight for the final, and basically said "read the slides and know what I said in class". There are 600+ slides. It's outrageous. Skip if you can. blames students.
AWFUL AWFUL PROFESSOR. I have never received lower than a B+ in any class ever and I am scraping by with exactly 70%. I have learned absolutely nothing about finance, every test is on 5-8 chapters which equates to 150+ slides each. In class he flips through dense slides and does not provide study guides for anything. It is near impossible. Avoid it
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IT IS MISERABLE. For perspective, there are four exams and a final. Not to mention the last exam is one week before the final exam and the final exam is cumulative over the entire semester which is 600+ slides. NO study guide. Class average test scores on the last four exams have been 55.91, 67.36, 62.42, and 68.34.
This guy is a joke. He doesn't test you on the bulk of the relevant material, rather he picks out things he may have said in class and asks specific questions about it. He is a horrible teacher. The class average on tests was 54% and he takes joy in that. He isn't accountable for his part in the poor grades, he blames it all on students.
Easiest class ever. You don't have to watch the videos if you don't want to. You can take each quiz as many times as you'd like to get the grade you want.
He is the best finance professor I might have in my life. I hope I can have chance to listen to his lectures again. He is even a better person.
Reviews will depend on the type of student you are, but the guy is very dry and he'll make you work to do well on the exams-meaning that you'll have to read every PowerPoint slide, article & listen to every lecture precisely to get at least a B. He reads from his slides, which make lectures even more mediocre. Great experience w/ finance at least.
Art is a great professor. he knows what he's doing. You can learn a lot from him if you pay attention. good for your career.
Best part about class is no book required. Worst part, it's all about the lectures. It's passable if you go to class and take notes. Majority is basic finance which you should have learned already.
Dry, speaks in a low voice. I don't know why he didn't answer my emails, I was asking questions quite politely, that feeling was awful. Exams are based on the stories he talked about in the class, and if you aren't good at listening or you are a foreign student, he would not be good for you
Art is a great teacher who really knows finance. His humor &experience in the field gives him credibility and stories to help you better understand concepts/terms. His tests are very difficult - if you go to class and study the powerpoints/articles he uploads, you will be able to pass. Paying attention and studying are very important to do well.
Avoid
This class CAN be engaging if YOU find a way to absorb the material on your own. Art just lectures, you're 100% liable for how you grasp the material and ultimately perform on exams. Contrary to past reviews, he's not awful, in fact, if you listen and think about what he's saying, you'll find the lectures quite enlightening.
Class is pass/fail. The class consists of pre-tests, quizzes, and a final exam. You can do each assignment as many times as you need to in order to pass. I finished this whole 1 credit class in about 2 hours. Mostly common sense.
Pass/fail class. You can skip through all of the quizzes by putting random answers then take final as many times as you want (have to get 70% to pass). Takes 2 hours at most to finish class. It is in an interesting class if you want to learn some things.
4 Exams and a final. Many exam questions are from lecture so don't miss class. Exams are based off of powerpoints where there is a ton of information to memorize. Final is cumulative and based off 500+ slides of powerpoint. Seemed like a decent guy but made class harder than it needed to be. Several projects that are kind of fun.
A great class with a great professor. Yes, of course it's easy and that's why many of us opt to take it. However, I was genuinely able to learn things that will benefit me when I have to start full on adulting after college. This class has some real life financial lessons that can help anyone. I think this class should be mandatory for everyone.
Go to class and take notes to do well. Finance Deportment uses his class to weave out finance majors, a quote from Art.
The class is probably more difficult than it should be as Art likes to ask very specific & comprehensive questions. You do get used to this after awhile and learn how to develop a gameplan for his tests where you can do fine, and he does drop one test. The class could be better, but isn't horrible & is possible to do well, w/ some speedbumps
Art is a great, funny guy, but lectures tend to fall a bit flat. Tests are extremely difficult, based more on memorization. The material isn't hard, but remembering random facts for the test is difficult. Go to class if you want to pass. Weekly current events that give you easy points, do all of them.
Art's class is only tough because it lasts for a full semester. It's dry content in massive volume, delivered by a guy who's not built for inspirational oration. He tries, but the class just drags on infinitely and so strongly fails to elicit students' interest that studying for and passing tests becomes a challenge. It's not hard, just miserable.
A pass/fail class, that can literally be done within 2 hours. 1 CH was to fill in my schedule. Honestly, easy. Take it if you need an extra hour to add into your schedule but you DO learn some valuable things. I understood more about finances, after all, I forgot most of the material that I learned in economics.
Pass/Fail course. Take it if you need another credit hour. You can finish the entire course in 2 hours and before the semester even starts. You can retake every quiz and the final as many times as you want. You can definitely learn new things, but most of the questions asked are common sense.
I love the comments "made class harder than it had to be". You don't belong at W.P Carey if you don't want a class to be hard. This class is difficult to ace but a B is easy if you put in the work. Art's lectures can be a little dry but I find the subject interesting so I make it work.
Budolfson is a nice guy, but his teaching style is sub-par. He does a terrible job explaining concepts and he tests on random word memorization from his lectures. You literally have to write everything down including the obscure random junk he talked about in class. Avoid or memorize your brains out.
Anyone who complains about Art shouldn't be in finance. He was a mutual fund manager & has true knowledge not from a textbook, and he is also a CFA. This class has no math and is strictly qualitative information about financial markets and institutions. He has good HW activities and buying a stock and bond may help you be more interested in class.
Easiest 1 credit class ever. Multiple attempts on everything, so you really can't fail. It's a pass/fail class. It's pretty good info if you actually go through the lectures.
This class is insanely boring. Like insanely. He has a mono toned voice and just reads off slides and slides. Tests ask very specific question which is hard to memorize since you have to memorize a bunch of stuff. Do not recommend at all.
Easy class, self paced, and teacher is available if you need help.
Very boring lectures that you have to sit through, because his test questions are based off of random facts he says in class. 4 exams and a final. The only way to study is by reading through all the power points which is roughly 150 slides every test. Avoid or spend countless hours memorizing slides. Poor communication to students outside of class.
Easiest class ever. Can be finished with the course within 2 hours. Test at the end only counts if you pass/fail.
Underrated professor. He knows a lot about the field of finance and it shows in his lectures. If you can get over his aggressive exhaling before the start of certain sentences, then you will survive. If you think his lectures are boring, you should reconsider being a finance major. Don't buy the book.
Art is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, and it helps that he was in the industry for most of his career. he stays up to date on current events, and ties them into his lecture constantly. 90% of his tests are word for word from the slides, so you have to MEMORIZE EVERYTHING, which is most people major grievance. easy HW, and EC.
I think everyone makes this class seem a lot harder than it is. It takes effort and studying, but is not impossible. The lectures can be dry, but Art is a really nice guy. Tests get easier throughout the semester once you adjust to how they work and he does curve at the end of the semester. Current events are easy pts. I really enjoyed the class.
It was a very easy 1 credit class. The class took maybe 2 hours to finish. You could retake the tests as many times as you wanted. A simple pass/fail class. The subject was actually pretty interesting too.
Easiest class I've ever taken. You don't even need to watch the lectures. Everything is common sense. Take this class.
Great class if you need an extra credit. It is super easy and selfpaced so you can easily finish the class the first day of the semester.
Honestly, he is a very good professor who knows lots of things in Finance. The tests are based on the lecture slides and others information which he mentions during the classes. Around 30% of the test content are coming from other stuff out of the slides. Very hard class for FIN students, nothing about math, all about memorizing.
I finished this class in under an hour. You can retake everything so I skipped the readings/videos we were supposed to watch and just took all the quizzes and the final. Most of it is common sense. This is the best one credit class to take if you need an extra credit to keep a scholarship or something.
The class just opened today and I finished the entire course in less than 2 hours for a half semester class. My 14 year old dog named Joey could pass this class. This is a 1 credit, joke of a class and if you need a one credit class; This pass/fail class is the course to take.
THE MAN. THE MYTH. THE LEGEND. He emails you twice during the semester.
Art is a very knowledgeable professor. Really enjoyed listening to his class, but couldn't stand the tests. Information would be so specific that you would have to right down ever little fact he States in class, not just the lectures. Very poor with email responses. Good teacher, I learned a lot, but impossible tests.
If you can read and breathe at the same time, you'll pass FIN123 online. It took me 2 hours to finish the entire course and I got an A, though unfortunately it doesn't count toward GPA. It's just pass (Y) fail (E). Good if you need an extra credit though!
The man. The myth. The legend. Budolfson communicated with the class twice during the entire session. FIN 123 is the easiest class you can ever take at ASU. The course can be finished even before the semester officially starts.
The easiest class you can take. I finished in 3 hours before the class date officially even opened. Pass or Fail. No interest in finance but still very easy. Prof hasn't replied to my email and it's been 3 weeks, so he is very unreachable.
Absolutely the easiest class to take at ASU. All modules can be done using common sense if you don't live under a rock, and can be completed in under an hour if you do it all at once. Class is based on pass/fail, and the final exam can be done as many times as you'd like until you pass.
I finished this entire class in 45 min. 14 quizzes and pre-tests that allow multiple attempts and a final that you only need to get 70% or better since it's a pass/fail class. Easiest class I've ever taken. Quiz questions were simple and mostly common sense. Take this if you need an easy 1-credit!
FIN361 is extremely detailed and covers an impossible amount of information. He tests you primarily on little details he mentions in class that are not specifically on the powerpoints; for example, you must memorize pointless statistics on articles he briefly explains in class. Takes off points on Activity assignments with no explanation why.
Here's the tea. Art is really smart, knowledgeable, and really a nice guy. But his lectures are dry (I don't want to but I keep passing out in class). His notes are kinda his stream of consciousness and sometimes doesn't make sense. A LOT to memorize and his tests are frustrating, but he curves at the end!
Let me give you the best piece of advice I wish I would've had as a Finance major at ASU. Avoid taking Budolfson at ALL COSTS. Decently smart man, but an absolutely atrocious professor. This is the second class required for finance majors and the material is cake. Art makes this class impossible intentionally, which is completely unethical.
I finished this course in one day. All quizzes are common sense but tough questions can be found online. It is a pass or fail course but I do recommend taking it if you need a one credit schedule filler
One of the unnecessarily hardest classes I have ever taken. He reads off hundreds of power point slides and includes very specific details from articles in exams. He's a good guy himself, but the way he teaches and administers exams is shameful. Try to avoid this professor.
Art just reads off his power points every class and you have to memorize the material. This sounds easy, but not when its over 100 slides Per exam with hundreds of terms to go though. His exams ask the most specific questions about random articles he showed and he even threw in a question about a random tangent he went on. Exams make up 80%
He is a really nice guy, but like everyone is saying he just reads off the slides. Doesn't give study guides and expects you to memorize 150 power point slides and 10 articles per exam. Avoid at all cost if you actually care about your GPA.
Art is likely the worst professor Ive ever taken. His tests are based on 250+ slides with random questions with zero relevance, no study guide. His lectures are insanely boring and monotone. I reached out to Art 6+ times via email, text, etc for help and never received a response. Ill get a poor grade in this class because of his lack of care.
A day before Session B starts and I have already finished the class. No grade, only pass/fail but helps if you need 1 credit to fill your schedule. Quizzes can be retaken multiple times, and finished the course within 30 min.
Just did a speedrun of this class in 33 minutes, the only thing that counts towards the final grade is the final, and to access the final just do the 14 5-question quizzes. No need to do the pretests, as those do not unlock the final. Just get a 70% or better on the final to get your Y grade. Easiest class at ASU.
If you want an extra credit, just take this class and be done within an hour. I wish I didn't take this because I really didn't need to, but it's not like it took up a lot of my time or anything. I know nothing about the professor but the class is stupidly easy. Easiest credit of my life.
This is one of the easiest classes you can take at ASU. You can easily finish this class on a weekend. You also get multiple tries on the quizzes and tests. I highly recommend taking this course.
Probably one of the easiest, if not THE easiest class that I have ever taken. I was recommended this class in order to get the total 14 credit hours needed. I have finished this class within the end of the week, but I would have probably finished it within 2 hours. I highly recommend this class even if your bored.
He is a professor but is also a good person. He will take care of his student if his student ask for his help. One of the best person I have meet so far, if you study, he will help you to succeed, if you have trouble, ask his help and he will help. Highly recommend if you want to learn but also want to stop worrying grades. Greatest professor.
