Hes a great teacher.
His class was very easy. General physics was just like physics from high school. His curve is INSANE and a 50 is a good grade many times. He'll help if you ask and tweak grades. His droning voice will lose your attention though.
His class lectures are ridiculous. He mumbles to the board instead of talking to the class. He does have an insane curve, so try not to get stressed out while going through the class.
There are people on this earth that should, above all else, have nothing to do with mentoring or teaching. This man is one of them. Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. It pains me to pay for tuition and get a professor of such poor quality.
The most confusing professor I've ever had. He mumbles, writes on the board a million miles a minute, and is very difficult to follow. The material is not extremely difficult but he makes it impossible to understand.
This man needs to retire already or something, for the sake of future students everywhere. I am not even joking. I'm finding it very disturbing that he cannot see his ineptness for teaching this subject properly.
How are we supposed to learn if it's next to impossible to get more than half of a test correct?!! I sense a little rudeness in his voice as well..
I agree, needs to retire.Doubt that he will soon. So, here's a tip:be able to do the examples in the book chapters(not end of chapter problems)focus on concepts not math! Surf the curve as last resort only. You'll do fine.
Overall i think the Professor is okay. Although he do mumble in the class sometime and the book is kind of hard to learn but he's nice. I try to read the book but stil don't understand. But someway i think he's kinda nice because at least he offer help on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
AVOID THIS GUY. He makes a difficult subject insanely hard. Expect to fail his exams. TAKE THE COURSE IN ANOTHER SCHOOL. There is no alternative to this guy for the program here. Demands a lot of homework and will give quizes on a regular basis. Trust me, avoid him. You get graded on the homework
TERRIBLE! Makes an already difficult subject nearly impossible. The average C grade is in 40s-50s. Lectures were whirlwinds, tests were very difficult, after class time was grudging, moody and usually unhelpful.

Horrible professor, makes physics harder than it needs to be and his tests are near impossible, stay away from this professor if at all possible
Difficult and tedious class. Prof can’t explain material clearly. Avg exam score mid 40s - mid 50s. Grades by Bell Curve. Good homework score boosts grade, but it’s a huge workload and harshly graded. Reading chapter is more insightful than lectures. Concept class= 4 math driven exams. Final= 50% actual concept questions, 50% math. Seek extra help.
Extremely hard class. He thinks all of his students have all the time in the world to study all the material he "teaches." He doesn't explain everything clearly and you need other sources (textbook, online) for help. I would recommend you to take it out of UMASS-Lowell. If you can't take it anywhere else, buckle-up, go to study sessions & pray!
Mittler's not that bad in fact he's a very good guy. However the class/material is tough so u'd have to spend at least some time on it. His exams r hard 2, but the nice thing is that he scales them and the scaling is huge! Mostly the average exam grade is 40-50, one time the average was 27(!) meaning 48 pt scale! So overall its really not that bad!
Was not very clear, not really helpful
ATTENTION ALL UML SOPHOMORE EP STUDENTS: DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR ARTHUR MITTLER FOR GENERAL PHYSICS I and II!!!! DO NOT COME INTO THAT CLASS THINKING YOU WILL GET AN A UNLESS YOU WANT TO DEVOTE EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF YOUR SOPHOMORE YEAR DOING PHYSICS!!! DO NOT I REPREAT DO NOT BE BRAVE... YOU WILL BE HEARTBROKEN IN THE END WITH A D or less!!!!
I've taken a few physics classes, and I never hated physics until I had this professor. Does not explain concepts clearly. Exams not exactly fair. Class averages always a 50... meaing that either every student he's had is stupid/doesn't try... or something else. Trust me, it's "something else". Thank God it's scaled.
i think this guys should not be teaching doesnt help u when u need it.if ur slow in writing notes then there is no way ur going to have notes
I am sure that Dr. Mittler is a decent man. He is however, clearly unhappy at his job. His lectures are at best murky. I am an A student and could not pass a test in his class. The average grade on one of his exams is 50. His attitude is one of condescention. Seeing him during office hours only yeild impatient answers to your questions.
he is a good person. he is not the best for BASIC physics. i believe he is better at teaching advanced classes. Gen Phys 1's material is extremely heavy (15 chapters in 16 weeks). i had phys in HS for 3 years and GenPhys1 is almost 3years of HS in 16 weeks. it is not his fault people do not do well. UMASS should change the program. HE IS HELPFULL.
do yourself a favor if u need to take Exploring the univrse do it on Monday wednesdays and fridays with stimets way easier i had Mitler my roommate had stimets the roomate never had t ogo to class except on friday to take the quiz. mitler gives you a test every thursday and you also need a prs clicker to answer in class questions
Dr. Mittler does a great job teaching introductory physics. Exam questions are often very similar to hw problems and practice exams. He gives students every chance to succeed. A science major should be able to take this class and do well.
This guy is totally getting a negative rap that he doesn't deserve. He puts a lot of energy into his lectures and knows his stuff. I don't know too many professors who would run 4-5 review sessions in his own free time to help students out.
he rambles in class, have to buy a $50 thing thats pointless, other professor don't use it. Has asst on quiz days which is every friday, but you can have study guide out without getting caught. Only need to go to class on wednesday to get study guide info and friday to take quiz...hw and quiz due friday
The worst professor I have ever had. He is about as clear as fog. Be prepared to use your book more than your notes, and be sure to go the Weds class. Those are the days he reviews for the quiz on.
this class sucked, but it was hilarious. he is clueless, me and my friends used to scream profanity and shoot spitballs at him
Great teacher, probably the best Physics 2 Recitation teacher out there. Very helpful at explaining things and holds 3 hour option review sessions before tests that are very helpful. Nice guy and funny.
Terrible. He's rude and doesnt know anything about the course. My friend and I(and pretty much everyone around us) cheated the whole year without him even having a clue. We knew all of the answers to the quizzes before hand. He is a terrible prof. Take stimets.
Not fun. Boring, useless, just talks about slideshows, he doesn't even make them.
He is super friendly / approachable and will answer any question any time unless he is very busy at the moment. Sometimes his recitations were hard to follow, but any calc-based physics recitation is hard to follow unless you prepare and try the problems beforehand. It's a hard subject, and he is as good a help as a professor can be if you ask.
Nice guy but incapable of teaching. Do not take his recitation if you can. Doesn't announce quizzes then teaches you what was on the quiz after you bomb it.
Really funny and helpful , knows a lot about the subject and is interested in physics. hard to reach out of class but other than that hes really good
I did not buy the texbook, I didn't think it was worth the money. His recitation is alright. He gets very worked up over the material, although there are not a lot of demonstrations. He is a nice guy who gets you up at a 8am class. Although, if you want a teacher that is more direct and less abstract, then take another recitation.
Well, he's good at physics. Overall tough class.
Nice guy, but bad at explaining anything. He says he "doesnt have to work a day in his life because he loves his job." I say, he doesnt work a day in a life because he doesnt DO his job.
Dr. Mittler gets a bad rap. He really knows his Physics, and if you try and follow what he's doing, he explains everything you need to know to do well in the class. Some people find it hard to follow his derivations, but if you take notes of what he does in class, he basically solves all the homework for you. Would take again.
I have never spoken a word to Arthur Mittler. He is there for lectures and then disappears. He lets the Recitation and Lab TA's do all the face to face work. Boring lectures but they are informative if you can stay awake.
Very unorganized, he explains things like he is talking to his peers. He gives graded questions during the lecture via response clicker. So always bring your book because some of them are impossible to answer on your own. Asking for help is a hit or miss, if its anything about the course in the future he won't know. Only had him for Lecture.
I only had him for lecture but I did not learn a lot
I am doing well in this class. why? I've taken AP physics in HS. but am here to warn anyone taking physics in UML. you better have taken physics already. teaching0. every lecture. reads few slides. and thats it. if you've never taken physics. good luck. the guy doesn't teach anything. and recitation doesn't either.
During lecture he reads off slides from the book. Half the time he himself doesnt even know whats going on. Do well on exams at beginning you wont do well on the later ones. Dont expect to learn anything from him or the recitation instructor. Don't take if you havent had HS Physics.
i took summer gen physics and would definitely recommend him. lots of homework but he solves every homework problem he assigned during class the next day clearly. tests are tough but he gives practice problems VERY similar to exam questions. he IS a little scatter brained, but he's hilarious during class. he makes summer physics a tiny better.
Physics I at UML is seriously flawed. Getting in the 50's is considered a C. This department should really rework the course if scores are so low that the scaling needs to be so high. Worst lecture I've taken. Lecture is reading slides and recitation is 2-3 problems that don't teach you anything. Your grade relies on 4 exams with 3 questions each.
Mittler seems like a nice guy but needs to rework the class. Lectures are straight from the book; be sure to read the material before class so you can answer the clicker questions. Tests are difficult, and the average exam grade is about 50%. The entire course is graded on a huge curve. Get a good recitation prof if you want to do well.
Exams are not difficult at all. This is a fairly easy class because of the curve. Also most of the questions on the test or some variation of the ones in the book. Physics isn't something you can read about and remember definitions. It's about practicing and learning the concepts with problem solving. Mittler is a really nice guy but he can't teach
Mittler seems like a nice guy but the class is seriously an independent study. You attend the lectures where Mittler struggles to read off slides word for word, that are directly from the book, exams are similar to problems worked in the book but the TA's who grade them are bad with partial credit, and the homework doesn't show up on exams
Activity sheets, quizzes, and homework have nothing to do with exams. Previous exams are completely different. TA is useless. Professor's review sessions are also useless. This is a self study course... no teaching required. If you have the physics foundation from high school, you will pass. If not, you will be lost in a constant loop of confusion.
Easily the worst teacher I have had in my life. He can't even read correctly off his own slides in lecture. his voice is so monotone you will want to die in class. You will be stuck with him if you take Physics 1 for lecture, but do NOT take him for recitation. The whole set up for physics is broken at UML, and Mittler is the main reason for it.
I will start on the positive note and say that he is a good Prof. The reason being is that he tries to make his lectures fun in a sort of way. But the bad thing is that the homework that he gives are tough and do not help at all on the exams. It is good if you are a physics major because you can reach you're self better then he could. Recommend not
Worst professor/teacher I have ever encountered. Avoid at all costs, if you expect to learn anything from him, think again. You would be better off teaching the entire course to yourself on your own time and just showing up for tests and quizzes. He considers a 50% on his tests acceptable, what a joke. If student feedback mattered, he'd be gone.
You go in class and he reads off from the power point that you can do yourself. Minimal explanation and moves on. Go to lecture class for clicker question points. Self study class... if you need a professor to teach you physics, I recommend taking physics from a different institution and transfer the credit...
Physics is extremely scaled, so it's not unlikely to fail the exams and still pass the class. That being said, the material is not well taught by Mittler, nor the additional recitation professor. This seems to be more of a structure problem, because there are consistently low exam scores for the last few years. Try your best, it's hard to fail.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had, his lectures are boring, confusing, and pointless. Also the lab report that he wrote, which is required for the lab portion of the class, is reflective of his teaching abilities: poor.
This class should not be taken at Umass lowell because the professor grades very unfairly because the tests are too hard. Also, if class evaluation counted Arthur Mittler would have been fired a long time ago. He thinks he is teaching but he really isn't.
This is a mandatory class for my major, and many other, the fact that he teaches the main lecture is a disgrace to this university. He is an awful teacher that is more focused on his tangent thoughts then the actual lecture he is supposed to be teaching. He is yet another example of a teacher that got tenure and stopped caring if anyone learns.
The final reviews provided to study only have answers so if get it wrong, to bad he is to lazy to do his job and show work. I learned more by studying for the final using Khan Academy(KA) in two days then I have learned all year from him. If this is a required class I recommend KA to you and MIttler so you can both learn the material of Physics 1
Horrible. Lectures were useless besides the clicker questions, and his recitation was even worse. Quizzes and exams were nearly impossible only way to pass is to look up the quizzes when you get them on Chegg. Overcomplicated the subject so much. Dont ever take him.
Please for the love of all things good, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS MAN! I have never had to rely on online resources and other professors to get through a class before this one. Not only are his lectures almost useless, but they often left me more confused before I started the class...
I don't think I learned a single thing from this man if you get stuck in his class its hard to fail but I'm sorry for your loss
Doesn't explain things well at all, boring lectures. The homework provides no help at all. Use your online resources because he won't teach you any physics. Teaches the class as though you already know the material. If (when) you do bad, there's a very large scale.
Good guy! Tries his best for you to understand the material, unfortunately he's better suited to teaching students who have a strong foundation in math. If you're weak in math avoid taking it with him.
Absolutely terrible professor. Avoid him at all costs even if it means taking a summer class, you'll thank yourself. He doesn't teach you how to do his problems that will shows up on the exams so his lectures are only good for the clicker points. Previous exams he put on blackboard are your best shot for doing well on exams.
Clear expectations and clear instructions.
im so sorry for whoever else has to go through this
cannot teach well.
This class is design for people that already know physics. In lectures, most of the people don't get the material. The physics department is not structured well. Some of the TAs do not know how to explain in class. Having a lecture and a recitation is a waste of time. Sample test does not give a detail explanation only gives the answer.
If you care for your sanity please avoid this professor at all costs. A friend of mine reached out to him for help, and all he said was: "I have better things to do with my time". Unless you are really hard working and love physics DO NOT TAKE Professor Mittler.
"One of the best professor I've ever had. He is really kind and cares about his students", is a review that this professor will never get. He is a terrible professor and the only reason he hasnt gotten fired is because he is on tenure.
Do you hate your self and everyone around you? If so, this class is made for you. His exams are really hard, and his lectures are basically pointless. Avoid his for your own sanity. P.S. He sometimes has problems with simple adding/subtracting numbers. Enjoy
He was the WOAT. The ABSOLUTE WORST of all time.
I had Professor Mittler for recitation, and the few lectures he gave, (because of missed lecture due to snow days), were awful. He is terrible at explaining new topics. But, going over example problems he's awesome at. I learned a lot from the examples he gave in recitation, but he moves quick for some people. He's impossible to reach out of class.
First professor I have had that made me feel like I've learned barely anything. He goes over material and problems as if he is solving for himself. Unclear about upcoming quizzes, saying it is "on stuff we did before" which caused me to do poorly on them. Would not recommend for recitation or lecture, unless you're a masochist.
Prof. Mittler would have full blown conversations between himself and the whiteboard for 49 of the 50 minute class time. The remaining 1 minute was reserved for occasionally acknowledging his students. The only thing that kept me going was his witty banter and forgetfulness. He is clearly intelligent; he just can't teach nor simplify physics.
I had professor Mittler for Physics I recitation. All he does is do practice problems while not addressing the class until finishing and does not explain what he is doing and how to do it. I had never taken physics before this and asked a question at the beginning of the semester and was told I should have learned it before because it was easy.
Not sure why he has such a low rating on here. Saw this before I had my first class with him and was expecting him to be bad, but he's a great teacher. Easy to understand and lots of help outside the classroom. My favorite professor this semester.
Online format wasn't very good. He did example problems during recitation, but they were hard to follow since he went quickly and assumed we understood the process.
Had him for Physics Recitation virtually in Spring 2021. Decent professor and pretty straight forward. Honestly not sure why he is ranked as low as he is considering how friendly he is. Be that as it may his quizzes are harder than what he goes over, so pay attention to the lectures and go to physics tutoring.
Professor Mittler is a nice person, however, he can NOT teach. He often mumbles at the board when proceeding with complex problems that he seemingly thinks you understand, labeling everything as "trivial." Be sure to ask questions because he will explain a topic in a way that will make you not understand. You'll be better off learning from youtube.
Professor Mittler is a kind professor and is always willing to help his students, however he is very lecture heavy and at times his lectures can be unclear and hard to follow. At times he would expect us to know certains which made it even harder for some of the students. He isn't awful, and you can definitely pass, but there are better options.
I've never met him, so the only reason I'm writing this is because I assume he writes all the lab handouts. None of the equations are ever explained, the wording is brief and vague, and more. Sometimes it took me days just to figure out what value to use for the variable "a" when you find like 10 different ones in the lab for that single equation.
If you just want to pass physics, sign up for literally any other professor. He makes his quizzes more difficult than other sections and will take points off your participation if you don't get a perfect score on what are essentially pop quizzes. He's passionate about the subject, but rambles and doesn't clearly explain how he got to some steps.
The lab instructions are vague and hard to understand. Sometimes even the TA doesn't understand what you have to put in your lab report. It's not coherent, the grading is not the same between sections, and it's just a lot of work for 1 credit. The one saving grace is that the average of your lab section is curved to 85% in case you have a bad TA
Professor Mittler does not use blackboard at all. If there is a quiz that week he won't send an email about it or upload it ti blackboard so if you missed class that day you will have no clue there is a quiz coming up. Since nothing is on blackboard you will also have no clue what your final grade wil be.
If looking to pass save your money. This class was hard bc of his teaching inability, the first few tests & midterms class avg were below passing. If you can take diff. section DO. He makes his tests harder for a fact, math/ problems are easy but applying what he calls "the physics" and "obvious" is not so easy. AVOIIDD
Old professor who does not give great feedback and his handwriting is impossible to understand
Arthur gives you homework before he teaches it to you in the lesson. Inadequate teaching style. Doesn't seem to have an understanding of his lessons or material.
Doesn't care about explaining anything just writes stuff on the board
Never posts on blackboard, so any upcoming quizzes are a complete mystery until you get to class. Exam problems aren't similar to the homework problems, and the homework is randomly posted, as he rarely sends a notice when it's posted.
