this guy is the worst teacher i've ever had
very smart man, yet very unclear. has a very liberal grading curve, which helps boost grade. however, i would never take this teacher again if i had the choice. difficult to follow in class discussions.
Very unclear and unorthodox teaching style. Writes WAY too fast, yet the grading curve is great. A 30 still passes the class. I took him for 3 classes and got a B or better in each. Kind of goofy.. must have been a super nerd in high school.
Yes he was very hard of a teacher for this course.Keep in mind though that this was Summer I.Nevertheless he did significantly more than the previous teacher who taught this course did.He is actually very pleasant person, who is always willing to help
Also took a discrete math course with this teacher.Very clear as to what he wants and how he wants to do it. Test and homeworks are of no surprise , as he asks for exactly as much as he gives. One of the best if not THE best teacher on campus
This was a tough class.A lot of new material, of which some was not easy.Tests were fairly hard. The final was VERY tough. Not recommended for people who haven't interest in math.
hes a good teach i like him, al u ahve to do is attend classes and do the homework
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He gives no help. He does not scale. I got a 59 on an exam and he would not raise it to a 60 so I had to drop the class and retake it with another teacher. He has his head up his ass while teaching and basically likes to hear the sound of his own voice. God forbid if you have a question, he can't comprehend that not everyone is a math genius like he. Oh yeah, wore the same outfit to every class as well. If you currently have him, take notice.
As a person he is a nice guy. As a teacher, well he shouldn't be for non-math majors. He doesn't understand the perspective of the students. He teaches as if you already know math. He does lots of calculations in his head and can't explain them. The moral is this little story is don’t take him unless you know a lot about math, or can teach yoursel
A challenging class. He definitely makes you work.If people get this far, they should be capable of learning things on their own.The only thing is that the final is 40% of the grade. While it might not be possible to digest everything he lectures on, he asks on the tests exactly what is given in class- no more and no less.
He is a nice guy and is very good at responding to e-mails. His teaching style is very hard to follow, however. Most of the time he stands in front of the board while working problems so you can't see what he's doing. I had to do a lot of learning by reading the text, something I've never done in a math class before.
Be prepared to be more confused when you walk out of his lecture than when you walked in. Spends and hour on a problem, doesn't explain what he's doing or why and then turns around (after blocking your view of the entire solution) and says "Any questions or illegible things?" Dazed and confused, everyone just sits there quietly. Smart--can't teach.
This guy was horrible. Never stopped to help anyone, if you asked him to slow down, he would look at you and just go faster. Dont get me wrong this guy is very smart but he can't teach you anything. If you take his class youll spend most of the time in the math lab trying to figure out what he just did
I am currently enrolled in Finite Math. I am failing. Extremely difficult and easy to get lost. He is a brilliant guy but he cannot teach math to anyone that is not going for their math masters. I strongly suggest not taking this class...Only 2 tests and a final -final=40% of grade...homework done on internet...does not keep attendence..dont take!!
Quite possibly the worse professor I have ever had. Avoid him at all costs.... "any questions or illegible things?"
One of the best professors I have ever head. If you think he is the worst, I can not help but disagree
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS unless you feel like taking the book and teaching yourself Finite Math. Doesn't explain anything and goes through the problems so fast that you don't even know what he just did. Class had 30+ on first day and there were 4 people at the final... what does that tell you?
REALLY hard class - he's a wicked smart guy but he just Can't teach. Homework is done online & is graded - dont bother buying the text book because I didn't even open it. I spent a lot of time in the math lab because of this class. I wouldn't recommend taking this class at all unless you're really good at math.
Awful teaching methods. Kept switching between computer and graphing calculator, making it harder to keep things straight.
i always hated math until I took professor rosenthal's class. He's really smart and sparked my interest in math. He is hard to follow at times so you might want to be prepared to get some extra help in the math lab.
I'm pretty sure a middle school student could do a better job of teaching. Do NOT take a course with this guy.
Yeah so I took this guy for Finite Math. Hes the teacher..and you know the type...that understands the information so well that he cant understand ppl who dont. If u ask him to explain soemthing..hell give you an even more complicated answer. Yeah finite math is somewhat easy..but this guy makes it a lot harder. Not recommended.
This is what Prof. Rosenthal does: during class, he stands up at the board and talks to himself, from the beginning to the end. He doesn't take attendance or collect or hand back homework. He just writes on the board and says random things about math. Do your best to avoid him unless you are good at math.
I love math, and i'm pretty confident in it.. but i had to withdraw from his course within the first month, because not only could i not pay attention but i couldn't take him seriously as a college professor.. he's a mess.. and a joke.. After i caught him picking his nose and eating it during a test, i immediately withdrew from his classs.. Don't t
Other's already said it: "traditional" by the book Prof. Not engaging. 100% lecture 0% student-centered. Friendly and caring 1 on 1, but when in class more focused on "covering" material (a.k.a. writing on the chalk board and talking fast) than helping students learn. He assumes students already know information. FOR MATH NUTS ONLY! TRUST ME!
MAT 214,320,323,711,704,734,737,725,713. Enough said.
Cliche in that he has chalk dust all over his face and pants & he KNOWS his math. However, probably the WORST professor. He doesn't know how to teach. Had to drop class. Tried to ask questions, couldn't explain anything. Didn't inform us we had to have online book that cost me $100. Never explained anything no matter how hard we tried to ask.
I took prof Rosenthal in the fall 2010. He's the worst professor at Salem State! He doesn't care about his students you could go to his office every day and still barely get a D. I graduated school with a 3.95 gpa do yourself a favor take MAT 108 or any math with J. Lampes you'll be glad you did. This guy hates life!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!
Just not a real good professor. Doesn't relate to students well at all.
Terrible teacher, does not care how students are doing in the class or try to help them. The teacher makes simple topics confusing.
He will rush through every problem. he is a very nice guy. class is easy if you teach yourself and pay really close attention. The chapters go from hard to easy.
There are not words to describe how bad he is. It is an absolute guarantee that he will be the worst professor you've ever had. This is coming from someone that NEVER writes bad reviews. If he wasn't so nice, I would have thrown things at him in class.
Defiantly hard. If you suck at math don't take him, you basically have to teach yourself with the online hw assignments. All lectures, he always ask students if they have questions but no one says anything. If you take him ask questions and he'll do the problem for you. However, he will defiantly help you if you ask him, he's nice.
The best Math teacher on campus.
It was just the worst. If you plan on taking an online class, you'd expect online tests, right? Well not here! He makes you come in on a day of his choice (unless you can get him another day) and you take it in class. I don't know about you, but that's not an online class. He's rarely any help and he sounds like a drone. Just don't do it.
I'm really good at math, but this professor has made it very difficult to learn anything. He talks to himself while writing messy notes on the chalkboard. Very hard to follow. I taught myself to the best of my ability online to somewhat understand the contents of the course. Everyone fails the tests, so he does scale them.
worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't teach at all, he goes over questions on the board but it's really hard to follow & he doesn't explain himself or if he does, he expects you to know exactly what he's doing. Only thing that was helpful was the review questions for tests and the answers to them are online. Don't take his class.
Dont take this class. I dropped out the first day. and the online book access is pretty expensive.
This class was absolutely awful. 5 students dropped the class after I did as well. He doesn't help and keeps referencing the book if you needed help. Do NOT take this class. It is not worth it.
You definitely need to ask him for help, most students don't and wind up dropping the class. He has messy notes but will help out.
Worst. Professor. Ever. I am including high school and my community college as well. I had to take this class last second and I trust RMP, I wouldn't have taken him. He does not help you when asked. He is disorganized, he is very rude to students. He insulted me in front of the entire class for getting extra help. DO NOT TAKE HIM. SAVE YOURSELF.
Overall, he makes MAT 108 WAY more difficult than it should be as basic math. He loves math and is very intelligent. He helps you outside of class and will sit down with you and explain things. But he is so smart & will go too fast thinking you understand everything right away. He is a VERY tough grader, and does not give extra time on tests.
Awful teacher. Doesn't care how his students are doing in class and doesn't answer any questions asked. If you take this class you will most likely fail.
Day 1 consisted of watching him speak for 90 minutes without taking a breath. It was extremely difficult to determine what he was exactly going over due to his constant conversation with the chalk board. Intermittently he would turn around and ask if we had questions. If you aren't a whiz at math or just older like I am, do not take this course.
Absolutely horrible. He is knowledgeable about the subject but get ready to teach yourself the material. He assigns homework on material he's barely covered so I end up spending hours trying to finish the homework because he doesn't teach! He flies through lectures, even if it is on new material. Honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had
In May/June of 2016 i actually drove 45 miles to Salem, 2x a week for 6 weeks (2 hour drive there) to take his class. Have an MS'09 from here but no longer in the program. Took the class for fun. Small class with 6 people. Interesting lectures, challenging homeworks and tests. He goes fast but gives you what you need. Would take him again!
Awful. Lectures become obscure tangents of un-related concepts and introduced many Calc 2 and 3 concepts before we learned Calc 1. HW was all online, and I could never reach him outside of class. I ended up having to buy an online tutor to help me even get through. A scale of 50% or more being a passing grade should say enough.
Very messy writing, always chooses the most complicated way to solve problems, does not teach and only does examples on the board. You will need to teach yourself first, THEN practice in lecture. Lots of homework, $100 mathlab required, keeps grades to himself so you're clueless. Even multiple math majors could not figure out some work from calc1!
Moves way too fast, and doesn't seem to care whether or not you learn the material. I've always struggled with math, so at first I thought it was just me, but I know some math majors who felt the same way. I knew I'd be dropping the class after another student said they didn't understand what he was explaining, and he said that wasn't his problem.
This professor does online classes but wants you to do your tests at the testing center. He's never available for extra help. No one in the online class got higher than a C-
Would not recommend unless you already know what youre doing for the class. Illegible handwriting and he doesnt go over what he talks about, just expects you to understand. Brilliant guy, terrible professor.
Professor Rosenthal must have once been a brilliant man, but he cannot teach. His handwriting is illegible both in class and through his online lectures, and his explanations of problems don't exist. My class started with around 30 students and ended with less than half. People would skip just to go to the math lab for help. Save your GPA dont take
Worst professor I have ever had, doesnt explain anything
Terrible professor, worst i have taken here! took the class for 2 weeks then dropped it because he was so bad
Teaches you the most Confusing methods of doing problems
Make sure to study for quizzes!
Professor Rosenthal is an interesting man. So far in all of my college years I have maintained only As and Bs. This class gave me my first C+. The Professor is real lecture heavy. He is a sweet guy, who is willing to help if you search for him. However, if you dont pay attention to his 3 hr continuous lectures, you won't pass his exams. Geez..
Ive always loved maths until this time
Unless you've study hieroglyphics for 5 years, you will not understand a single thing this man writes, nor will you understand his complex lectures and teaching. He's smart without a doubt, but he's not very cut out for teaching.
Save your GPA and DO NOT take his class. If you can take someone else, do it.
This class is honestly an easy A if you just show up and do the work. His handwriting is a little bit hard to read but otherwise hes a really good and caring professor. His homework is really easy and his tests arent bad either its all about just Actually showing up. easy A. class id take him again
He talks a lot in class and sometimes one can get bored very easily if you are confused you are going to fail each class you will learn something different
I used to adore my math classes. I'm a numbers guy so I've always had ease with math classes. This man, however, has dumbfounded me and I barely made it through this. Awkward teaching, annoying homework, and tests that if you don't study hard for, YOU WILL FAIL! And I was basically the only one who even showed up to his classes. Avoid at all costs!
I Highly recommend that you do NOT take him. He is such an awful teacher, every class he gets straight to writing on the board and does not explain anything. The test are 60% of your grade and he assigned homework almost everyday, the later you submit the more point he takes off... Worst professor at SSU
THE WORST PROFESSOR! He shouldn't even be allowed to teach anymore because you don't even learn anything... and it is clear I'm not the only one who would agree with that
This class is not that hard for students who do well in math. I understand his lecture can be really confusing so I recommend using the free textbook he uses for help. Also take advantage of the practice he gives. Also, you can do multiple attempts on his quizzes so there is a high chance of passing. And his practice exams are similar to the exams.
Just awful seriously. I love Math but with this professor just NO. I tried emailing him and he said everything is there on the assignment. I ended up dropping the class because it would mess up my GPA. Just do not take this professor.
This professor exemplifies everything that's wrong with tenure.
Do not do this to yourself. I love math and I dropped the class. It was just horrible
I was going to give a lot of info about why this class is so bad, but I am limited to 350 characters. I will leave it at this. You know the horror movies where people go into the haunted house and you're watching saying to yourself "well that characters going to die". Arthur Rosenthal's class is the haunted house. good luck.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. I tried to stick it out for the whole semester, but there was no way. You can ask him a question and he'll go into detail and answer everything BUT the questions. Imagine everything that can be bad about a professor and put it all into one. It's him.
Probably as bad as it comes when it comes to professors. Only reason I passed was because of his insane scaling system. Also his hand writing is not readable.
Just all around terrible professor, doesnt care about how you do on exams, and only gives you 60 minutes to complete an exam. Avoid this man like Covid
This guy may be the worst person that's ever lived. He is just a bad grade waiting to happen. This will definitely tank your GPA and you'll want to seek therapy after his classes. His lectures are just scrambled and uses advanced concepts to teach this. I don't mind math but this class makes me just hate it. I wish I could write more but Im limited
Arthur must really enjoy screwing over every single person that has signed up for this class over the years because it is above and beyond the hardest math class in the entire school. Grade is based completely on three exams - stay away from this class. Hopefully somebody from administration sees this page one day and begins a full investigation.
Guy is a joke. The fact that a University is willingly paying this guy to teach is actually comical. Doesn't care about the students and if you decided you wanted to sign up for the online class good luck because it is physically impossible to pass. He doesn't care. Simple.
This class is a waste of my tuition and my time. I'm officially calling for this mans termination as he should never have a job for as long as he lives. He doesn't deserve to be paid a dime as he is just robbing this university blind. President Keenan should really look into this guy as he is robbing the school of their money. Overall just bad guy.
If you want to go through hell during a semester take this class
all of the ratings on here are true, do NOT take this class. you might have a chance to pass if you can teach yourself, however with the material he assigns it's almost impossible. good luck if you unwillingly get put into this class
One of the worst math professors in Salem state, advisors and other faculty know he is not good at his job at all but have done nothing to remove him from his position which he doesn't deserve. If his grading wasn't scaled nobody would pass. If this is one of your required courses just go to math lab to help you, don't waste your time in his class
A really smart man terrible professor. If you're taking this course I recommend you use the videos he has on canvas instead of going to class they are much more helpful than any of his lectures. The only reason I would say to take his course is because he is a funny dude and I like his personality, and his grading scale is very generous.
I went through hell an back in this class, I spent night and days trying to understand this professor, I tried emailing for help but it felt like I was reading a novel, I just always got lost and confused along the way of reading his emails trying to find the help I thought I was getting. save your mental health.
Welcome to the end of your sanity. I love the struggle of math, but even Rosenthal's class had me wanting to throw hands with the wall, since Rosenthal often overcomplicates the math. One redeeming aspect is that he's always willing to help. The beginning is deceptive, since it's really simple, but turns into overcomplicated mathematics. Good luck.
One of the worst professor's I've had in my life. While make attempts to help if you ask for it. In class both over and under explains how to solve a problem. Doesn't teach any calculator shortcuts for the equations, but will show you the excel shortcuts (which you can't use on the test as it's all paper). Avoid the class if possible.
Horrible, attendance is not taking at the beginning of the lecture, nor any lecture. The professor sticks to one question on a past quiz for the entire lecture so you leave with the same knowledge walking in. The class is finals heavy, quizzes are about a minimum of 20% of your grade, while finals are 80%. Much more to say but not recommended.
terrible professor and does not care about his students, taking his online class he does not answer his emails quickly at all, and if he does he responds with an emotionless robotic answer in a whole book of useless details that do not answer your question. take the class with somebody else.
Honestly, the only reason I passed this class is because of his insane scaling system but other than that, this class was horrible. He would come into class and just start writing on the board without any explanation, basically talking to himself. Exams were 80% of the grade meanwhile the homework was 20% of the grade, speaks for itself.
He talked to himself the whole class period. Never took attendance. Tests were worth 80% of our grade which is insane. Never communicated. Always late.
Clearly a smart and sweet guy, but a truly horrible professor. Classes are awkward and confusing for the 3-4 people who bother to show up. Asking for help is useless because of his complete inability to communicate information or even hold a basic conversation.
