nice guy, funny, makes a boring subject not so boring, cool guy
A good prof, but his tests are hard.
Knows his stuff, good class, but a little too much scarcasm....
in order to pass his class: a)take good notes ie. write every word the man utters, b)attend classes (yes even if it's boring), c)ask, ask and ask questions, and d) bug the man during office hours
Great teacher, makes material interesting. But you're lucky if you get a C. Overall worth it.
total jerk!! stay away..he seems nice in the begining...he'll start to insult everyone..your lucky if u get a D!! j_e-R-k
His tests are sooo hard and he is very picky when it comes to the essay. The length of the class is way too long (three hours) and therefore makes this topic even more unbareable
He's a nice teacher and very smart. But he is picky on the test and essays.
One of the most interesting profs I've ever had-REALLY knows his stuff. Keep fighting for the little guy sir!
Great Prof, Not a easy marker, not a hard marker. You do your work and come to class you will get a B no prob. The classes are amazing you will always learn something new. Best prof i ever had.
Great teacher! Knows his stuff and he expects you to know it too. Clearly passionate about what he teaches.
Ross is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff inside and out and is passionate about it. He makes the course enjoyable and it's not as hard as everyone makes it seem. Take great notes and always ask questions. He's not bad looking either ;-)
Professors of this kind are difficult to come by. Excellent educator and person. Always made time for us, and I was proud to be one of his students. Thank you!!
AWESOME!!!!!!!
Ross is my favourite Prof. He knows everything about Politics. All he expects is you to work hard. He is very passionate. Work hard and take the best notes, and you'll get the mark you deserve!
This guy is great, very interesting and knowledgeable. Make sure you take good notes and ask questions.
ALL OF THE REVIEWS BELOW ARE WRITTEN BY ONE GUY: Arthur Ross He is the worst teacher at Ryerson. Toughmarker, lier, a-hole, strict, and spiteful
I totally agree with the last comment. He's not helpful at all, and he lies about his expectations. He very arrogant, he's very picky with his marking and he's unable to explain the way he marks. Not to mention he's boring and his jokes are dry.
great teacher - i learned a lot. take good notes and do the work - consult with him when writing papers and you'll do fine. I had a crush on him too!
stop misleading students. This guy is knowledgble, and explains well;however, his expectations are not well defined, he's extremly hard marker, to the point where he will fail u for insignificant mistake.
Clearly enjoys the material and makes it SEEM as if its easy to comprehend. EXTREMELY hard marker and his expectations are very unclear. There's NO pleasing his marking style.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! Ross is a phenomenal educator and he taught me everything I know about politics. He motivated me to become more active and exercise my political rights. GO TO CLASS & TAKE GOOD NOTES. Consult with him for your papers, he likes that! But, his marking is sometimes hard though! :)
ALthough my rating doesn't relly reflect it, I feel he's a great prof. He makes the material extremely interesting and I like how liberal-minded he is. SPeak up in class, he likes that and you'll get better grades.
He is a very tough marker and does not explian his expectations.
I agree with the last comment. Ross is arrogant... and a priick. He always marks harshly, I think he enjoys giving students bad marks. A cold man, looks down on students, treats them badly. HE LOOKS DOWN ON STUDENTS.
Ross is OK ONLY if you go to class. In order to get a half decent mark is to take notes in class...If you DO NOT GO TO CLASS you will do very, very poorly. He does give you the Final exam, but without a textbook it becomes useless...his notes are all that helps. He can be Unclear at times!!
Nice to look at
If you dont share his political views (Bleeding Heart Liberal), keep your mouth shut, cause if he finds out, he will look down at you. As others have said, I think he really does think he is better then everybody else. Oh well, go to class, dont buy the book, take good notes.
Ross is a tough prof-smart and demanding. To ace his essay, write a prelim. outline and present it to him for revision.Boosts you one letter grade. I've learned more from him than any other prof i've ever had though. Excellent teacher.
What is with the negativity? I LOVED this prof!! He's intelligent, witty and interesting. Plenty of jokes made during class - perhaps only funny for those that enjoy tongue-in-cheek humour. If you're looking for the real university experience with a prof that values "liberal" courses, take Ross!
This prof might appear to be very intimidating but he's really not. He's also a fairly hard marker. My advice is to go to class and take good notes. Trust me the notes will come in very hand come test time.
unreasonably hard-marker; grades you poorly if you don't share his views. Thus, I advise u to praise the Liberals.
He is the best prof at rye high
What a prick!! He tends to look really down on students. Especially if u cough!!
Some of these comments look like they were written by Ross himself. And we all know he would do it.
I really hate it when students mislead other students about this guy by writing nice things; which truly is not true, many students including myself has ruined our GPA. Ross might come across as a decent prof. once the deadline to drop the course is over; u're done! drop him fast if u can!!!
If you have a choice choose another professor. He does have favs, but we all know favs are a few out of many so if you wanna take a chance go ahead. Note* he does like people who ask him for help and look like they are trying hard - if you are stuck with him and happen not to be a fav try ur best to look hard working and earnest he may pity you.
He is the best prof I've ever had. He's tough, but if you take good notes and go to class its smooth sailing. All you whiners don't like him because he challenges his students and has high standards set for us..which is refreshing.Soif your a slacker drop the class and if you want to get your moneys worth and actually learn something take the class
Ross is one of the worst instructors when it comes to grading papers, I mean literally he takes marks off for no actual mistakes at all and what is worst is he is arrogant and unhelpful about it....and wants u to always agree with his views. If u don't he will penalize u...I learned it the hard way. What a miserable prick!
If you think this prof has ruined your GPA, too bad...this is university. He's one of the few profs at Ryerson that makes you think critically, and will judge you based on fact and intellect. As a former student of his, once you get out into the "real world", you'll need to have followed his advice in order to make it. p.s. invest in RRSPs!
It sure sounds like it's coming from Arthur. Arthur is one of the worst instructors I've ever come across. He's by far the most unrealistic marker I have seen this far...I going to Ryerson not UofT. Moreso, extremely unapproachable, and snob. Arrogant Prick. There are so many pleasant instructors at Ryerson that offer the course ..
Boooooooooooooooooo! Has a negative view of ECE students- take another prof if possible.
Ross is a good prof. If you would all just pay attention and study, maybe you wouldn't have much to complain about.
He is great. He makes the class more enjoyable with his jokes and witty comments. If you pay attention in class and study his notes, then you should do find. Although, he is a tough marker on assignments...so watch your grammar!

Keys to passing this class: 1)Take awesome notes. 2)Use these awesome notes for the mid-term, but make sure you also use info from the READER. 3)Excellent grammar is needed for the essay, and go to him for help, he likes that. 4)Finally, for the last exam- prepare, use you awesome notes, and the reader- just throw in facts wherever you can!!
simply one of the worst profs at Rye...he ruined my whole experience here at Rye. He's extremely baised in his markings and therefore, no matter how hard u try it doesn't matter!!
He is a cool guy, just listen and YES take all his notes from that board - and you'll be fine. All those graphs he draws just get the logic of it...he will use it for exams!!! Its all about his notes...!!! He is funny and helpful, if you show him you care about politics...
I didn't have a good experience with this professor; mainly due to the fact that he's baised towards students whose first language is not 'English'. Sad to say, he's not helpful either when approached for help. Very arrogant, and quite rigid.
He was tough! But he liked our class because it was 8:00 am on Monday (and maybe he felt that we were a motivated bunch?) Although I could've done better, I really learned a lot, and it was applicable to real life
GOOD LUCK! thats all i have to say! go to every class...have a lap top...take as many notes as you can...in that class he put everyone down (most ppl didnt realize) he made it seem we were dumb students b.c we were in ECE and we wanted to become teachers...
He's an excellent prof! Very clear and concise. Trust me you can ace his course if you only attend classes and put a little effort into the essay and tests. He's very helpful too, you just have to make an effort to go talk to him.
A lot of students find this professor intimidating but actually he is quite sweet. He is witty and makes the subject interesting. If you want to learn and are willing to do the work, you can get a decent mark.
Miracle! Though he rubs off as intimidating, he's quite helpful. His lectures are worth going to. His overhead collection is in the millions (charts and stats are HIS THING). His witty comments and great outfits will make any lady want to attend class regularly! He appreciates the faithfully dedicated bunch who show up every week!
Arthur is intelligent, concise, clear and quite interesting. He seems to be interested in students who do their work, contribute useful commentary and engage him. I would assume that the negative comments here are from those who resent having to earn a good grade. I wish he taught more courses that I could take. He's also quite attractive.
His lectures are interesting but a little repetitive. He make tons of little jokes which are hard to identify sometimes but he is really engaging. Does the kind of thing where he makes you guess the one word he is looking for rather than a concept. Really helpful with essay topics and even gave me some leads for resources.
If you have Arthur,be ready to shut off your mind and agree with him on EVERYTHING he said. He is arrogant and doesn't take opinions really well, let alone criticism, esp when it comes to govt fiscal policy. In another word, ALL tax cut is bad, rich people are evil etc. He loves to poke fun at ECE (Early Childhood Education). Avoid at all costs!
Horrible professor, likes to brag how good he is and like to step on others to make himself feels good. His lectures are confusing and expect you to memorize everything by the decimals.
This guy is great. And YES, you have to attend his class in order to do good on the midterm/final, but what the heck, the topics are interesting. Just pay attention and take notes and you will do great.
Worst Prof I have ever had! Arrogant and self absorbed. Be prepared to be a robot and serve your ?all-knowing? Prof, write what he wants, say what he wants to hear, it?s the only way to do well in his class. To the pathetic person who keeps posting he is hot, get a life and glasses!!!
horrible teacher. quite bias & enjoys picking on students by surprise. very intimidating & praises himself a lot. if u don't agree with him, u screwed yourself up.
I found Prof. Ross informative and fair. Not to mention good looking for a baby-boomer!
Not good at sustaining discussion
A really bad prof. Even if you study a lot you may have not studied the exact thing he wanted. He always picks a class he likes better and is much easier on them. If you go to him for help he tells you that you are dumb. He thinks ece students are stupid and nothing will change that. Thinks everyone is horrible at essays.
Make sure you participate!!! Really nice guy, but very boring class... very, very boring...
he's subjective and at times very **** and self centered. and i don't think he's as smart as he thinks he is.
Arthur is one of the best professors I have ever had - he is extremely passionate about the material and can be very funny. Also, he is totally sexy. Unbelievably.
This Professor is horrible. Never take this class, he is classist and has no empathy for human beings. Please, new ISS students do whatever you can to not take this course. This is the most unprofessional and bias man in all of academia. He has no idea hoe to teach. RUN.
I actually liked his class. Prof. Ross was very good at redirecting the discussions, and it was all pretty informal. Great topics!!As far as the final paper, he was extremely helpful and understanding. The only thing I would suggest is that he needs to give more feedback to his students as times goes by
He is a fantastic teacher. I learned something from taking his class. Attendance is a must because getting notes from a friend won't help. You need to really understand your material because no part marks will be rewarded on your tests. He is approachable when you need assistance especially with your essay.
Def. gotta go to class, not a class you would want to skip. You gotta put in the time and dedication. Also don't let him intimidate you. For the essay go to his office for help. Study group was helpful for final exam. Lectures were very boring but take your notes!
Must go to class! I did not enjoy politic..but Prof Ross turned me to love politic.. he can make it very interesting..
his lectures are hard to keep up with!
HE IS ACTUALLY NOT AS BAD AS SOME PEOPLE SAY HE IS.I REALLY DON'T THINK HE HATES ECES LIKE MOST PEOPLE THINK. HE RELATES A LOT OF HIS LECTURE MATERIAL TO US. HE'S A VERY GOOD LECTURER. VERY INTERESTING AND FUNNY TOO. for those who are planning to drop his class because someone else told you to... go to his class before you do that. he's not bad!
He is a very smart professor, however gives out insane tests which half the class failed. He calls everyone stupid and puts everyone down and blames them for the bad marks instead of his terrible lectures. He does not clarify properly what he is expecting, except for being an expert on a topic that most students are learning for the first time.
He's a fair marker, but not easy. He pushes you to think and is very knowledgeable. Going to him for help really works. Excellent prof, I hated POL before his class. Made me change lots of the ways I think.
He is actually a really good prof. A lot of people don't like him because he is tough. He makes the classes very interesting. In order to do well you must come to ALL classes and ask questions if you do not understand. His tests are pretty straight forward but MARKS THEM BRUTALLY! Offers help for essay outline! It really helps if u go!
One of my favourite professors ever.
Ross is very smart, and unfortunately has high expectations for his class. Some of us have not taken political science before and he expects you to know more than you should. He is a brutal marker and picky with word choice. I did not ejoy his class and would never take one with him again.
His lectures are always interesting and never dry. Attendance is mandatory to do well on exams and tests. The people who think poorly of him are probably the ones who did not show up to lectures or took poor notes.
I actually loved going to this class. Ross was able to keep me engaged about the different topics that were discussed in class. The midterm however was ridiculously brutal and nearly half the class failed. It's important that you make good notes and go to every class. Overall really good prof!
Professor Ross is an engaging lecturer who is passionate about politics. Make sure you write GOOD notes and attend class in order to do well. People say he's a hard marker but that's because he wants you to actually think and not repeat things verbatim. Overall, it was an enlightening class.
Loved this class! Like others have said, he took a subject which can be very boring and dry and made it interesting and engaging. He expects a high level of work from his students, which shouldn't be a problem if you attend all lectures, take good notes, and ask for help if needed. I would love to take another class with him!
Ross is knowledgable about the subject. However, his expectations for tests and essay are not clear at all. There is only 1 midterm, 1 essay, and 1 final for the class. I would not recommend his class.
In the begging he was kind of hard in the midterm. But if you go to class and take good lectures. You will be fine.
The. Worst. Ever Extremely sarcastic & rude. He's intimidating and scares students. Half the class failed the midterm exam, the essay was easy to write, final was OK. Don't be scared to fight for your grade if you followed his instructions but your mark says otherwise, he'll look it over. Take this class in night school I heard it was easier.
Great professor. Humble and funny and extremely knowledgeable about the content. Attendance is important as he doesn't post slides, even his own notes are point form which you must expand on during class. An amazing example of what every Ryerson professor should strive to be. Interesting content, fairly easy liberal, would take again.
If you are taking this course thinking it will be easy, you're going to have a hard time. His expectations are very unclear and grades the essays/tests accordingly. How can you do good, if you don't know what is expected?
Honestly I'm the type of person who looks for a easy class and good proff. This prof was great, he really knew what he was talking about and answered any questions. You have to come to class though to take notes because he doesnt post them. The midterm and exam are based on terms from those notes, The essay was fairly marked. I would reccomend him.
Very straight forward exams and assignments, funny at times, good prof overall. Make sure you attend every class. Content a bit boring, other than that, no complaints.
Voice is uber dry, but he makes up for it with even drier humor. Put me to sleep several times, but then again we were in the Cineplex theater. As long as you take notes, review a bit before tests, and do the one assignment, you'll be fine. Don't bother with the textbook, he provides plenty of online sources. Internet is life.
Extremely boring classes and hard to pay attention but everything makes sense if you sit down and read your notes and talk about lectures with other classmates. The course material is not hard, the hard part is paying attention
He's a good guy, but stern. As long as you don't mess around, you'll be fine in his class. He's old fashioned and doesn't post anything on D2L, so attending class is a must. This is a downside, but overall, I wouldn't be mad if I had him again. He's a fair marker from what I've experienced, so if you have him as a mandatory, don't be too worried!
Great professor! Completely fair and a solid sense of humor. I used the textbook mildly to fill in blanks. But you do not need to read chapter by chapter to pass the course.
If you don't take pages of notes that he puts on the board and doesn't talk about and can't find outside of class or in the textbook you will fail.
Dr. Ross taught a graduate course and gave participation marks between 2 and 5/10. The class participated a great deal. It was a huge let down. He kept promising us that he had excellent feedback for us but provided us very little. His marking didnt make sense as presentations with varying levels of effort/quality received relatively similar grades
Unclear, and as most politics profs, biased. He's alextremely rude and disrespectful. I took his class a while ago when he still taught ecs. There is a reason the students petitioned against this class and changed it to another one. His sarcastic bigotry of the field was rude and disrespectful. He is an alpha male who tries to be "contemporary".
Not the best prof to take the course with if you receive accommodations. Attendance is mandatory, lecture slides aren't posted and weekly readings aren't outlined on the syllabus rather a list of chapters covered will be provided in no particular order.
He was okay for 101, then 102 came. He is always off topic and used the same exact midterm questions for exams. You can take it, if you're okay with that. Sometimes the questions and topics never even came up in any classes. Gets mad when you use your phone and show up late. I had to take it, but he was so boring.
extremely rude and unclear. You can study so much for a test, using all the notes provided and do your own research along with the readings and STILL receive a 60% or less. Unfortunately no other profs were teaching the class so i was forced to take it with him.
I am in social work and POL 101 and POL 102 with him are mandatory. For POL 101 he was decent, it was easy to follow and I got a B. POL 102 CAME AND EVERYTHING EXPLODED. His lecture notes were not useful at all, there was a lot of tension all semester and he was really hard to approach.
This is a required course and he's the only Professor you can choose. Grade consists of a mid-term test (25%), an essay (35%) and a final exam (40%). Read your text and take good notes to help with final exam essay outline prep. Final verdict - It's a required course and a hard pill to swallow at times.
He was the only professor available for this course. Few opportunities (3) for marks, which are all essays except for the midterm. Since it is a politics course, there is definitely going to be some sort of tension between the student's views and professor's. Overall, the entire course was unorganized, boring, and somewhat annoying to deal with.
He isn't a bad prof. He does say offensive things he doesn't realize is offensive. He knows politics well. His lectures are fairly understandable, but are still easy to get confused with his examples. He is nice. His tests are very fair and aren't a surprise. Essay was toughly marked, not by him, by a TA. Very monotone. Very boring. But not bad.
Dr. Ross is old fashioned but not as bad as students described him in previous reviews. Once you go to lecture, read the textbook and make notes you'll do good. The only complaint I have is that there were only 3 evaluations; a midterm, an essay and then the final exam. He doesn't have specific criteria which makes this course difficult to get an A
The course itself wasn't as bad as expected however Ross as a professor was worse. His "powerpoints" in class are very unorganized (no titles, subtitles, just a bunch of jot notes). I would say the textbook does a better job in explaining things and is less boring. His lecture style puts people to sleep. Says offensive things without realizing.
I took Immigration and Settlement in Canada and not being a strong essay writer struggled with getting good grades on my papers. But for pol 129 if you are a good to average essay writer and have a good understanding of Canadian History you will do very well. Also one of the only professors to make me genuinely laugh every lecture.
Extremely dry humour which most of the class unfortunately didnt appreciate. Not a tough marker but you do need to know your stuff. He doesnt post anything online so I would suggest recording lectures and supplementing your notes while studying for midterm/exam. Its time consuming but helps A LOT.
A good prof, but old school as he doesn't rely on technology and has limited notes for the class to study from. He knows Canadian politics inside and out . There are very few grades throughout the term, so make every grade count! I feel like students who don't like him get one bad grade and feel like they're being treated unfairly as a result.
