Little weirdo reminded me of Elmer Fud with a Mussolini type powertrip.
The class consists of quiz, then weather talk, lecture, boring.Exams are hard!

Learned a lot, but you shouldn't anticipate an A
Very hard exams, very boring, worst class ever, this is 100-level???

Learned a lot. He definately has a napoleon complex!!!
hard tests, daily quizzes, assigned seats
Very complicated for a 100 level, tests were all essay. Teacher was ok, but I did not like the class.
this class was ridiculous for a 100 level course. tests and essays were incredibly hard. boo...
Quizes everyday but no that hard of a class

Make sure you study your ass off and get in a mentor group
very hard, don't recommend it!
Wow, this class was a tough one, but if you pay attention and take notes, you'll do fine. The professor is tough, but fair. Stay on his good side and do your work. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Hard teacher that knows what he is doing. Tests are tough and quizzes every day suck. You can learn a lot but when it comes to Exams you are basically screwed unless you study for 1 week before.
very hard class. professor is condescending and appears to enjoy failing his students. daily quizzes are rough and unpredictable. exams are gut wrenchingly hard.
Extremely hard class, daily quiz. At the same time you do learn a lot. The exams are also overly complicated, questions are not straightfoward.
Worst professor I ever had. He loves to see people in failure, I think he boosts his self esteem that way. Dont take ARTIE!
Dr Samel gives really clear explanations. His class isn't hard as long as you take notes on his lectures.
Great class! Take it if you want a class that actually has a professor who knows what he is teaching and who cares about the students and their learning.
this class sucks badly. he tries to explain things and make them clearer, but he just makes it seem more difficult. if you take this class, don't take this professor because he's a ****
Just took his online weather class. It was definitely the best online class that I've ever taken. Not too hard...learned a LOT.
I didn't like him at all!
tough prof, but fair, requires a lot of his students. If you take good notes, study, and ask questions, youll be fine. Quizzes and Exams hard.
Samel is awesome! He's tough, but it's all from lecture notes, so take good ones and you're set! Lots of work, but it really is worth it. He's really interesting. He makes it fun, funny, and easy to remember. I love weather and climate with Samel!
As long as you take thorough notes and study before the all essay quizzes every other week, you will be fine. He does a great job of answering questions and using easy-to-understand examples. Plus, he has a good sense of humor that makes the class fun and interesting.
This class sucked!
Took his online class last semester. The pace was really good and he is always available during office hours to answer questions. Responds to e-mail quickly. Very professional. Would definitely recommend.
I had him for weather and climate. He is strict and anal and really annoying, but he really knows his stuff. Curves at the end.
Samel is awesome! He's the funniest teacher I have ever had! :) I've never had so much fun in a class! You have to take good notes, but he flat out tells you you don't have to read the book. Just study your notes and it's really easy. I loved it!
Great prof! Highly recommended!
Hard, and expects ALOT from his sudents. I suppose you can learn a lot, but its not easy, and you have to be willing to spend a lot of time on the class. The "weather nazi" is his nickname if that tells you anything. I would never in my life have him for a class again.
The worst prof I had at BG, hes a total jerk running on some sort of ego trip.
Come on assigned seating? Are we 2nd graders? I agree with the ego trip comment. This is BGSU and last time I checked not an ivy league school.
Not going to lie... the class is a challenging... teacher if very strict but knows what he is talking about. Willing to answer any questions... Some might be scared to take him because he is known as the 'weather nazi' but with a class of almost 200 students you have to be strict in order to maintain control... over all he is a great teacher and you will learn a lot if you put forth the effort including good lecture notes and of course studying... PS Know you states and captials...
This is a tough and demanding class. Don't think you can just breeze thru it either. Lots of reading and analysis. Don't expect to have a social life, as the assignment load is brutal. Dr. Samel has a demanding pace, but is always available to answer questions. He is sort of cute too...in a geeky sort of way.
Don't take it! Don't take it!
VERY demanding class - especially for a Gen Ed! However, the professor is very smart and great at teaching. Be prepared to study all notes and be specific when answering questions on tests and quizzes.
Kinda tough class for Gen Ed. Quizzes and exams are that bad if you pay attention and attend class. Covers a lot of material and a very smart guy.
Took this class online in Fall 2009. Material is clear but a little challenging. But, I learned a lot. Plus, this is, by far, the BEST organized online class I've taken at BG. Samel runs a good class and keeps his students on track. I definitely recommend!
I took this online last semester. I didn't know much about the weather. Now I do! If you want to learn this is the class. Steady workload. Prof always responds fast to questions. Online office hours are extremely helpful. Text and Lab book sometimes disagreed which was annoying but prof cleared issues quickly. Would definitely recommend.
I have him for environmental studies, & his class is the only class i dread going to here at BG. he is very hard when grading, & makes you feel very dumb. I dont recommend esp freshmen to take this class. He has no smypathy for anyone or anything. DO NOT TAKE>
He is absolutely awful, I dread going to his class. He makes you write impossible papers that have nothing to do with your final grade. Study really hard for his exams which are all essay questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM! especially if you just want this for an elective, I made that mistake.
Just checking some old profs and see complaints about the envs 1010 class I took from Samel last fall 2011. I took the same class and loved it. Samel is tough, but I learned a lot about the environment and can write better too. There were a few big whiners in the class and in my debate group. I guess they came here to vent. Sad!
Incredibly hard grader. The entire class was based on writing papers about very specific topics. Due to the nature of the class I learned very little about the broad topics of environmental science, which is supposed to be the idea behind an intro course
Samel is great at teaching. He knows the material very well and enjoys teaching it. Although, for an intro course he required the class to write papers each week on one topic. This didn't aid me in learning the material. The discussions that were held each week helped more, but the structure of the class was rocky.
Samel is a very hard teacher!! You have to work in groups every week and write a paper together. It is a very time consumming class and my paper took an average of 6 hours per week for just the one paper not including group. You do not use the Book! DO NOT BUY IT! He is full of knowledge and knows what he is talking about! I say dont taking him!
I'm registering for summer classes today and wanted to put in a good word for this one. Took it online last summer and Samel was great. Everything was super organized and the extra videos on the youtube site for the class were great. Iwish that I could have taken the class during a 6 week session. Probably should have waited to take it this year!
I want to second the comment below. Dr. Samel is extremely organized. He holds virtual classroom discussions online. Make sure you have questions ready and he will realize that you are making an effort. He posts YouTube videos that clearly explain the material. Class is very straight forward. Quizzes on modules. Choose correct answers before
Dr. Samel is rude and helpless, had a confusing syllabus with multiple exam dates that don't apply to everyone so be sure you get the right date, offers little help to clarify this and screws you if you misinterpret his schedule. The class is easy, the manual teaches you rather than Dr. Samel who is very dry and boring in his video lectures.
Dr. Samel is an amazing professor. He cares about each one of his students and does nothing feed you with knowledge. He is very understanding and he is always willing to help when he can. I would recommend him to anyone, especially if you are considering furthering your education passed the undergraduate level. He can definitely prepare you!
I didn't take his class but watched his YouTube videos, which were amazing and totally helped me pass my online weather studies class. I so wish I had him for my professor. Kind of cute in a professor type of way. Can't hurt when you're watching his videos!
Dr. Samel made this online class challenging. His YouTube lectures for every chapter were very clear and helpful. He had online office hours if we had questions. The thing that will make or break you is your participation. If you don't don't participate in the online discussion board, you will not pass. But he is very helpful!
He is way to specific with everything he wants. He is treating it as a senior level class and it is not one. It's annoying and he is so up tight and gets mad if one small word is spelled wrong. I did not like his class at all
Be ready to read if you're taking Weather and Climate. Quizzes are heavy, time, and make up a chunk of your grade. Expect two to four a week. Exams are tough, not going to lie. Don't rely on your notes. He does not accept late work and requires participation on discussion boards to pass. It's not a bad class, just a lot of reading and quizzes.
VERY difficult class. 4 investigations/quizzes a week, you have to do a ton of discussion posts, and the three exams are impossible. Youtube videos help but still it's way to hard for a 1000-level class (I took 2 4000 level classes this summer too and this was the hardest class). Don't take this class in summer, fall and spring would be better.
Would not recommend taking any classes of his if not majoring in geology. Extremely hard grader, doesn't let students finish asking question before he interrupts them, and most of the time doesn't actually answer students question. would not recommend unless you have no other option.
Most things are pretty tough if you do not read, follow along, or pay attention. This class is challenging as well as adding the participation required in discussions and asking questions. If you watch the youtube videos, read the text, take the investigation quizzes and participate in discussions, you can pass the class. Challenging material.
this class was very difficult, he made the exams super long and did not give us much time
Dr. Samel expects more from students, because college is supposed to be more difficult than high school. His courses are well organized, and he goes above and beyond to make sure everybody succeeds, even sending out multiple reminders every week to make sure deadlines are met. He also makes sure group work is fair and that your voice is heard.
Very good professor with making sure students are learning but is strict when it comes to quizzes, tests and being tardy. He will call you out if you are ever tardy which ensures that students come but is still annoying. You have a tophat quiz everyday which means you cant skip any classes even if you have a reason to. Wouldn't take his class again
he is very strict but an excellent educator
He seems like a good professor until he grades your exams. Through out the semester you almost never know what your actual grade is. He cares a lot but not enough to show any kind of compassion when it comes to the online tests you take in his class. If you show up even a minute late he will yell at you or kick you out for the day. Worst prof. ever
He is a very lecture heavy professor. Do not miss the class there are multiple tophat quizzes a day and your tophat grade will drop 5% if you miss his class. His exams are very hard and the average on our first exam was very low compared to the second exam. Not many people in my class liked him.
This guy doesn't email back and has made me reconsider being a Geography major
Doesn't email back and it is next to impossible to meet with him outside of class. Exams are impossible and he doesn't seem how poorly everyone is doing. He's not a bad person but he can't advise or even teach for that matter. Other geography profs are about the same. I recommend against getting a geography degree from BG!
This guy is almost impossible to get a hold of outside of class. He doesn't seem to care how poorly people do on the exams either and is such a pain when it comes to getting help.
This guy can't communicate to save his own life and is so difficult to work with. I had to work with him for my geography major but have since changed out of that major and don't regret it. He doesn't seem to care when deadlines come up and it is impossible to know what is expected.
Weather Studies is mostly just the investigations which are easy and if that was all I'd have an easy A in this class. But there's a participation grade. In an online class. Not only that it's 20% of your grade! To see the discussion board you have to make a post first. If you ask a question that was already asked he's SO condescending about it.
The worst professor I have by far ever encountered. This gentleman has no sense of respect for his students nor does he allow any sort of room for normal interaction among students. His policies are crude, unfair and down right demeaning. His anger is prominent in his teachings and he uses previous jaded experiences with students as his reason.
This prof has very little respect for his students. It come across very strongly that he believes his class is the most important thing going on in your life. If ur late he will force u to tell him why even if its personal and will just kick u out if he doesnt like ur answer. If ur phone or laptop make any noise he will drop a letter grade.
Dr. Samel has very little respect for his students. He has the strictest device rules I've ever heard of and had the class divided into eight small groups with LAs's at every group to monitor students. Being minutes late will result in you being removed from the class. Your phone making four sounds during the semester ends up with you failing.
Dr. ANS is honestly a nice guy, but he is a horrible professor. He runs his class like your life revolves around it, and has a very strict cell phone policy. He expects his students to show up to exams, even if they're sick. This class was divided into multiple groups with LA's, so if you have a good relationship with your LA, you'll be just fine.
Too hard for a BGP
Do not take this class. Samel is quite literally a bully with way to high of expectations. You won't pass if you buy the textbook. The rules he sets in the syllabus are outrageous (if he sees your phone you're dropped a letter grade and can't go back up.) Save yourself the trouble and forget about taking this class.
Dr. Samel comes off as a very difficult professor. He states that there will be a penalty for not attending a class, using your cell phone, and hearing a ringer go off. He is the most genuinely caring professor I've had at BG, and does not assign a single homework assignment. Although you must study outside of class, Samel makes the material easy.
Professor genuinely enjoys teaching about weather and climate. Class is lecture heavy however the professor engages the class, makes it entertaining and fun. There are quizzes almost every class but they are super easy, these quizzes are meant to make sure you are learning the subject matter for that day. A class where you actually learn something!
Did not like him
He is not a good professor only cares about the weather and not his students. His phone policy is stupid he treats you like we are in middle school.
This is one of the most difficult, disagreeable, uncooperative, and disrespectful. He opened the class by telling us that he loves to call people out for being late, being on their phone or not paying attention. He will stop the class in order to embarrass you, and then ask you to stay after class. Do not take his class. No makeups for being sick.
Worst professor in the history of BGSU. DO NOT take this class, you will be monitored like you are in middle school. No phones, cannot be on anything other than his canvas class when on your computer. Will drop your grade an entire letter if his TAs catch you on anything other than taking notes. Teaches at fast pace & POP QUIZZES EVERYDAY
Dr. Samel's grading criteria is clear, he's enthusiastic about class and really cares that you understand. But, he is very heavy on homework, class attendance and being on time, and making sure you are prepared and not goofing around. The class was always silent most days unless we were working as a group.
Most organized, clear, and up-front professor you will ever have. He will shoot straight and tell you how it is. Literally, just try and you'll pass the class. His rules seem strict but they are really just common courtesy. The material is tough and he expects a lot out of you but is always willing to go the extra mile to help his students
lots of random graded "polls" - aka pop quizzes. Had LAs in my class cause it was huge, and mine was next to no help. No papers or projects thankfully. But exams were long and 100s of questions... no joke. Study, and do well on them cause that's your only shot.
Exam 1 & 2 are both 75 questions. Final is 150. Buckle up... tons of "polls" basically pop quizzes. TAs are tasked with attendance. Long lectures, almost never lets you out early. DOES NOT tolerate disrespect and if a phone makes a noise he'll have your head.
His lectures are easy to follow if you pay attention and take notes/review them you'll understand it. There is absolutely no work outside of class except review your notes. He doesn't really have pop quizzes, just expect to have one to two 5 point polls each class. His attendance policy sucks but it is what it is. He'll help you, just ask.
I loved him as a professor. BUT YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO GET HELP if you ever get confused. Weekly polls. Exams were tedious as well.
Beware of Weekly Polls. Exams are tedious!
He commands respect but in a very rude way and if you aren't perfect 100% of the time he does not like you. Lectures and homework are easy but you have to walk on eggshells around him.
I dreaded going to this class because the professor made it so unbearable. He has a really strict phone policy and will cause a scene if you are late even if it's just by one minute. I would avoid if possible.
Commands respect right off the bat in an extremely disrespectful manner. He has no issues with embarrassing you in front of the class and will call you out for whatever he sees fit, regardless if you've done anything wrong. Good luck if you have to take this class.
I had a great experience in Samel's class! Yes, he is very strict, but if you just follow his rules the class is honestly not hard at all. His lectures are very easy to understand if you just pay attention, and I never felt like I needed a lot of studying before tests. There are a lot of short quizzes, but I think they were pretty helpful!
Took my first exam, due to my internet being slow, the maps took a longer time to load. I emailed him, and explained to him my situation, but refused to help me. Now I'm setting with a grade below passing, all of becuase I didn't have time to finish the last 5 questions. With all the hard earned money spent for this course, it feels like nightmare
This class is the prime example of how colleges extort and steal money from students. This online class was a few thousand dollars with lab fee. This class consist of archived lecture footage from years ago and another 3rd party textbook that you have to pay for, vaguely related to lectures. No time, or resource was put into development this class.
If you can avoid this course, absolutely do. He was so strict and rude I ended up leaving after the first lecture and dropping the class. There is an incredibly strict phone policy and he will throw a fit. Samel is retiring in a few years, thankfully. Take the class with a different prof or wait it out. Best of luck to those who take the class.
you really have to pay attention or you will get so lost
Samel is fun and great. Might be strict but honestly just show respect and you'll be fine. I don't understand why so much hate. Just pay attention take notes and ask questions. He is happy to help you understand the stuff if you ask. I don't understand why people have an issue with his phone policy you don't need a phone during his lectures.
Very hard class and his teaching style made it harder
Don't be scared by his bad ratings. He has strict phone rules, respect them you'll be fine, you wont want ur phone out anyway. Class is him going over a PowerPoint, and tests/polls are based 100% on them, copy them and understand them and its an easy A. He's knowledgeable about meteorology and can make it interesting if you want it to be.
Honestly, at first I was really scared by Professor Samel, his intro is very intimidating at first. But I promise he's actually a good teacher and cares about you. I was nervous about his phone rules at first but when everyone isn't actually on their phones it's very engaging. Just don't show up to his class late! I'm dumb and I did it. So can u!
Dr. Samel can come off as very intimidating the first week or so of class when he goes over the syllabus and specifically the no phone policy and the ringtone policy. If you just listen to his instructions and be on time he's a great professor. I learned so much in his GEOG 1250 class. He is a great teacher and truly loves his job!
Very clear with what he wants. Absolutely zero tolerance for phones in class or showing up late. 5-10 question test almost every day but not super hard. Very good teacher in terms of content.
stressed lost and frustrated the whole time. dropped after two days in the class. goodbye
I dropped his class 3 weeks into the semester.
Samel's class is strict but manageable if you follow his rules. Expect lots of quizzes and long exams, but the lectures are clear if you stay engaged. Unstuckstudy can help with prep when needed.
A little off putting with his teaching style at times but is otherwise very knowledgeable. His expectations of the students is very clear in the syllabus and realistically isn't hard to follow and he expects you to act like adults Can be a fun class if you engage yourself in it. Test/quizzes are reliant on you paying attention and showing up.
Sadly, he has an outrageous syllabus. His lectures are information-dense, and the exams can be tedious. However, this class is surprisingly interesting, and the lectures aren't that bad. Dr. Samel is very knowledgeable and can hold my attention for the whole hour. He's also surprisingly a funny guy, and there's no homework other than studying.
If I had to give someone advice for taking a Samel class it is “Sit Down, and shut up” and whatever you do never be late if you are even a second late you are better off skipping rather than being chewed out in front of the whole class. If you be quite and do you work and participate lightly you will be
It feels like he should make every student fail the worst college class I have ever taken.
Geog1250 could have benefited from having 1 more day a week. Lectures are information dense & he rushes through the different chapters, making it hard to take in what was taught. This being said he has a high expectations for having a good learning environment, keeping out the distractions of people talking/being on their phones, which I liked.
