At first, I LOVED Prof. Schuhart. He gets really passionate about his topics and you can tell he's concerned with your education. He's really inspiring and is intelligent. What I don't like are his assignments. He's a practical teacher; be there, be on time, do the work on time and you'll be set. He's definitely for hardworking students only.
Worst English professor. His assignment is confusing. He won't tell you what is wrong with your essay. Not helpful at all. I got an headache after his class... Due to him jumping up and down. I ended up withdrawing since no matter what I do I won't be able to get an .. B in this class. Don't take him unless you are extremely excellent writer.
His requirements for an online community college summer course are absurd. I work full-time and am taking three other classes, but this guy seems to think that his is the only class that matters. I don't believe in "A's for effort," but his policy of giving 0's on completed assignments is ridiculous. Takes himself too seriously.
This class requires A LOT of time! I was taking other summer courses and this took up most of my time. He gives out 0's for completed assignments, which is uncalled for. He's rude, and an extremely harsh grader. Avoid taking him!
Exceptional teacher- the best I've ever had. I've NEVER been so engaged in a class- and my class was at 8am. I'm not a morning person- but that was the BEST way to start the day.
Best teacher I've ever had. Honestly, takes a lot of work and time but in the end it's all worth it. He taught me things that I get to use in my other classes so I truly appreciate him and his class.
Passionate about the subject. He is really smart, intelligent and fair. You have to work hard and put in a lot of time. His class was the most fun on campus, and fellow students were fun too.
I have only one advice to anyone who read this comment. If you want to learn literature, get ENG 125 with Dr. Arthur. I can assure you that you will get an A and you will learn. My advice to you is to be present in the class. If you are not taking ENG 125 with Dr. Arthur, you are making a big mistake.
Easily one of the most passionate professors I've had the pleasure of taking. Warning- he is a tough grader. DO NOT BS YOUR WORK. He will know. Just work hard, attend every class & give all your effort and you will do just fine.
Doctor A has to be my favorite college professor. Every morning when i have his class i end up laughing so hard from jokes he makes from movies no one has ever watched. He has a somewhat hard grading style but he gives you the opportunity to fix your errors and receive a higher grade. All in all great ENG teacher.
I love Dr. A. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has high expectations of his students, but he works really hard to engage with them. He expects you to use your mind and make an argument, not regurgitate what he says. He is a tough grader because he wants you to have skills to help you succeed in college.
If you go to NOVA and want to learn something for the money you pay, Dr A is a Professor for you. He is somewhat a tough grader, but he is always willing to discuss your mistakes and help you to improve them. He is what a teacher should be!!!
Would not take this teacher again. He is a good teacher but not my type. If you are interested in Space Exploration then take his English 111, if you are not then do NOT take his class. All you will write about is space exploration. It is not in my interest, so for me personally it was not fun to write about it...
He's a great teacher; however, he's not going to tolerate any nonsense. He only allows a certain number of absences and then you fail, if you miss the final class you fail. If you do your work and show up to class, he will know that you're taking the class seriously and he will help you. He will refer you to the textbook a lot, but it helps.
He's admitted to being a bigot in class. Dont take if you're easily offended. Otherwise he challenges your writing (while it is incredibly annoying) and gives really helpful feedback. Im sure my writing will improve after this class. Weekly homework, weekly reading, and big writing project are to be expected
I took online class. Mr. Schuhart is a GREAT teacher but watch out- He is a strict grader! Make sure you read your stuff well and be willing to directly answer the questions in the prompts. Do not get off topic when you write. He gives lots of extra credit points and great feedback! If you are willing to read a few hours a week, it will be easy (;
Do not take his class. Dr Arthur thinks that you take only his class. The amount of work is so overwhelming that half of my class dropped or withdraw from it. He is not helpful and his feedback about papers and assignment are very short and confusing. One of the students had a question about grading criteria and he was very rude towards her.
If you are looking for an easy A, than he is not the professor for you. Dr. A will push you to become a BETTER WRITER! A skill which you NEED in your academic career! You will need to put in effort, but he will give you awesome feedback. If you're a minimalist slacker, look else where. I look forward for ENG 112 with Dr. A I highly recommend him
great teacher. He is passionate about English and helping students learn and love debate, discussion and literature. His class structure (online) was confusing when I first began, but was easy to get the hang of quickly. He gives a significant amount of work but you truly learn in his class. He is highly entertaining and probably more so in-person.
Great teacher but expect a lot of homework, he makes you become a better writer but with a lot of work. Great guy fun classes because of his humor
Eng125 - DON'T TAKE HIM. 2 page papers and quizzes every week. A big research paper on the side. No one talks... He is straight up boring. There is a midterm and final smh. Weekly papers are annoying and quizzes are on multiple short stories you're suppose to read every week. Not just reading, but analyzing in depth. He is VAGUE/not clear!
One of my hardest classes I took, and it was only english 111! He gives you tons of homework and doesn't care that you have other classes, only cares about his. Expect to write alot, and use the school's database for research about space exploration. I did, however, learn alot from his class. He's also funny, and loves Futurama!
He gives a lot of work which is expected from a college professor which is how he treats his students and class on a college level, not a community college one. which makes you feel so proud once you get that A. He will help you get a better grade in all your classes since what he teaches is not only applicable to his class but other as well.
Horrific. It was the very first week of assignments and graded extremely harsh. I used citations and worked extremely hard on my writing. His feedback was extremely critical, accusing me of not reading the material. I am not the best writer, but I have done very well in past English courses. He expects you to be Shakespeare, apparently.
The most difficult english class I've ever taken, which would have been alright if he was actually helpful. This professor is an extremely tough grader and thinks that your life revolves around his class Good luck passing
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Don't expect him to help if you need it, if you send an email you will get a sassy response telling you to figure it out yourself. A significant amount of work is given, and it is absolutely ridiculous how tough he grades these assignments.
Want to be stressed out doing an insane load of writing and reading only to get horrible grades and snarky feedback? Then sure take him. You get bad grades even if you follow writing examples to a tee, thinks he's hilarious with snarky feedback that only comes across as rude and condescending. No help and has no respects for his students.
I took his class after reading good reviews. I failed to realize that there is a huge difference in how he teaches class in person vs online because I cannot believe he would have so many good reviews while taking his online class. So hard, I haven't cried due to stress from a class until now. I'm an A/B student but have been getting bad grades.
This was a really hard english class. Don't take it if you aren't already a good writer because the professor is a tough grader
If you're not a literature english loving student, then therefore I warn you DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE! 8 week online course was the worst experience of my life. He was rude, sassy, and expected you to figure it out on your own even if you asked for help. The work load is ridiculous, in his world this is the only course you are taking. WORST PROFESSOR
Expect headaches, read a lot, post on BB min 5 times, quiz, & writing assignment EVERY week, on top of that 2 addtl papers of 3-5 pages, midterm, and final. If you have no life and all the time in the world to offer then take this professor. Yes college is hard, but doing HW 24/7 come on Dr. Schuhart, we need time to ourselves too. We have lives.
I really regret taking his online class. Between four classes and a part time job, Dr. Schuhart's class is very unmanageable. I spend a whole day just to post on the discussion and another day to perfect the writing. He grades unbelievably hard and I''m not even majoring in english, only taking this as a literature prereq.
The workload for this course is ridiculous. I will never understand literature, never have and never will. I read and read and read and I am clueless. I have no idea how I will pass. I need a C to transfer the course to university and D to graduate from NOVA. At this point I lost all hope. This course mad me feel like an idiot and absolute failure
Dr. Schuhart is definitely a tough teacher that makes you work for the grade you get. He gives a decent amount of homework sometimes with very little notice. His discussions can get off topic fairly quickly but always remain interesting. On the last day of class, you bring in food and relate old science fiction works to Futurama. Awesome!
I took this class for Summer 2016. This professor is opinionated so if you are easily offended don't take his class. He offers interesting insights and loves class discussions. You 100% have to read the material bc of morning quizzes & in class essays. He offers extra credit that helps. If you do your work you'll pass easy and makeups are allowed.
Hes super funny and opinionated. I love hearing his opinions on everything, class is usually super interesting. The quizzes are on BB and so easy. The papers are the hardest part; he's a very hard grader when it comes to the papers. You have to work for your grade, but a very fun class.
Dr. A is a great professor all around. Very entertaining and fun. You definitely have to do your work by being prepared for class each day, that's very important. The blackboard quizzes are easy, but make sure you read/annotate your materials before each class and constantly revise your draft. But if you work hard, you'll get the grade you earn.
DR. A is awesome i never understood the real rules of ENG until i took his class. I love literature and he makes it more easy and understandable. He is so helpful I will take him again if I had another chance. I love DR. A if you want to really learn especially if you are a foreign students take him you will never regret because he is just awesome
He gives feedback on your work. Going to class makes everything easier. A lot of reading, but many of them are fun. Quizzes on the readings. He's a fun professor, you can tell he really likes what he does, and his enthusiasm is contagious. He does give extra credit.
He is the best teacher ever. If you want to learn, he is the one who knows stuff. He cares about students and is passionate for teaching. Show work and you get what you deserve and even better. He makes it super easy for you to learn his points. I love dr.A and definitely will take his class again.
Best professor I ever hard, but be prepared to write a lot and actually put in effort to your work. You will learn a lot. Lots of writing, but there is so much extra credit. Very intelligent, very interesting. Lectures are fun and interactive, never boring.
Dr. Schuhart changed my life. I could see how this course could be a complete disaster if taken online because you definitely need to be there for the lectures to completely understand what he's saying. If you don't pay attention you won't pass and you'll hate the course- if you do, this course could be the greatest thing thats ever happened to you
Worst Teacher and class I have ever taken! He is a tough grader and beyond rude. Don't expect to get any help, he makes you figure it out on your own. He believes you have no life outside of this class and makes sure you know that. If you want to take his class, make sure that you put your work/social life, your life in general on hold.
Dr. A is a great prof. Lectures can drag on a bit but his ability to express himself is inspiring. He tells you he doesn't do pc and you can tell he cares about his students, he is just not tiptoeing around feelings. He expects you to be responsible and if you are, you will pass np. DEF RECOMMENDED! if only for his discourse haha
I recommend him! Although his class is pretty hard, he pushes you to become a better writer. He is so funny and his classes are never boring. Even though attendance is not mandatory, you will not pass because he covers so much in class. Also, he does not "check" homework but he still expects it at the final paper.
Watch the video They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse in your Soul. This will explain who Dr. A is. I ended up getting an A after failing a couple quizzes and papers. I did all the extra credit. He is quiz/paper heavy but if you improve your writing, you'll get an A. He has changed my views on a lot of world subjects. Plus he's freaking hilarioussss
Dr. Schuhart is an amazing teacher. He wants to help you succeed if you are willing to be helped. Just go to every class and show him that you trying your best. He gives lots of extra credits. He is also funny. I am always excited to go to his class. you will learn a lot in his class. I would take him again and I would recommend him to anyone.
He is a very good teacher. I learned more in this class than any other class. Do the work, listen to his corrections, show up, and you will pass. He gives lots of extra credit. He is also the most engaging, enthusiastic, hilarious and knowledgable teacher you'll ever have. Take Dr. Schuhart!!
Prof. Schuhart is pretty crazy, and he'll tell you as much on the first day. His lectures usually turn into tirades about what is wrong with society, but for the most part his class is pretty easy. If you miss more than five classes, he'll fail you so you should definitely take that into account.
Professor Schuhart will help you understand the material that you are reading. He is really strict with MLA Format and citations. DO NOT MISS A CLASS trust me. He gives really good feedback with your paper. Beware of doing a lot of paper each week once you take his course. I regret taking his class, but also I improved my essays for other classes.
This was my favorite professor for the semester. He gives so much extra credit. He does assign a lot of papers but they're really easy and he gives helpful feed back for improving your writing. He seems harsh but he really does care about his students and wants to see them succeed.
Professor Schuhart is hands down one of the best professors I've had in my time at NOVA. He gave the most interesting lectures and provided relevant feedback which significantly improved my writing skills. This class was intense: reading homework, a reflection essay, and quizzes each class. An "A" is attainable but you must put in the work!
Prof. A is awesome !! He is definitely one of the best professors at NOVA, he actually cares about his students. Might seem harsh at first but it is all for your benefit. Gave a ton of extra credit and gives chances to make up for a bad paper. Over all he's great and would totally recommend.
Professor Schuhart is really good. DO NOT miss a class and read your textbook it will help. He really cares about your grades and will help if you ask. He does seem crazy and rude at first, but he is really nice and hilarious.
He is by far one of the best professors you can have at NOVA. He can be a little extra at times with the lectures and get sidetracked half the time but hes funny and the things he says/shouts in class will make you stay awake and enjoy the class. He is a slighty tough grader but youll see that it will highly benefit you. Lots of extra gredit given.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND professor Schuhart for just about anyone. He gives so much extra credit that even if you have a C, you can get an A by doing the extra credit. Hes so funny and is almost always available outside of class for any help or questions. Provides excellent feedback. Someone please tell NOVA that he needs a raise for being so great!
His classes are good and you can earn extra credit. He provides great sample papers. If you read all the material he gives, you can pass his class with a good grade. Unfortunately he doesn't give much feedback, but relies on peer reviews, which are not that useful.
If you take this class, expect to write a paper every week. I had a paper due in his class every time we met and I was mentally exhausted. He also calls people out if they don't have their work or if they're late. I struggled in his class, but I can't deny his skills as a Professor.
Take him he is very nice. Just be a little bit prepared because its a literature class
Weekly Papers and Quizzes so make sure to read! He is very nice but his humor isn't for everyone! He gave lots of extra credit at the end.
Great professor was never bored in his class but don't take this class if you are taking other classes that are important as well you will need to not have much of an outside life to survive his class without being stressed out.
Lots of reading and lots of papers but the feedback is amazing and I learned a lot. It helped me improve my writing and research skills. However, you cannot skip class and have to actually do work to pass the class. I had a D almost half way through the semester but don't give up. It gets easier and there is lots of extra credit opportunities!!!
Dr. Schuhart is a gem of a professor. Hes hilarious, engaging, invites class discussions, and you can tell he loves what he does. He shows expert knowledge on the subject(s) and even invites students to make their own stories for a grade. I wish class was longer, as I enjoyed every class. Strongly recommend taking his Science fiction class.
Good professor cause he really knows his stuff but man I stuggled with his workload. If you work and/or take other classes, good luck surviving. lots and lots of intense and difficult reading with lots and lots of detailed writing assignments. This class was draining.
Dr. Schuhart is an amazing professor. His expectations are clear and he rewards you for putting excellent effort into your work. While the feedback he gives can often be critical, there is no denying that he encourages his students to do their very best in order to succeed. Dr. Schuhart will appreciate it when you work hard in his class.
This is an AMAZING professor! 10/10 recommend. He is very well spoken, funny, and caring. The only reason I got a C in this class is because of a SERIES of unfortunate events that lead to me not being able to take the final , but instead of failing me, he passed me because he sympathized that it wasn't my fault! Take this prof if you can!!!
Professor schuhart is cool but i dont like that he uses a scientific approach to literally everything we do. you will learn a lot about how to write papers which is helpful but his lectures and assignments are just too scientific for an english class. he's aiight but its definitely a tough class. he is pretty understanding though so that helps.
Mixed feelings here. On 1 hand he's one of the hardest graders I've ever had, and gives very little feedback unless you go in to see him outside of class. But in the other hand, his classes are absolutely hilarious and makes the lessons entertaining. He was also very helpful every time I came for office hours. Not my favorite prof, but a fair one
He likes to grade very harshly, little mistakes could cause your grade in the class to plummet.
Probably the most aggravating person I've ever met. As a professor he's decent but his personality is extremely toxic. He equates honesty with being rude. If he doesn't like your personality you will know. He used his platform to teach more about himself and his ideals as a person while not focusing on the course. Take a different professor.
OK so the only reason I took him was because I needed a 200 literature course credit. Dr. Art, is a very critical person. He has specific ways that he teaches a class which is not for everybody. He has something called quexs which are very difficult to answer even if you have done the reading.
He has a good personality but is very aggressive in his teaching and grading. he doesn't offer much feedback, only tells you to go back to the books. i knew this class would be tough considering its a 200 level. but this is made excruciatingly hard, for no reason. even if you seek help outside of class he isn't much help.
He can be very judgmental If you need help with something that he thinks should be basic knowledge. He's very critical on the way he thinks about you and wants that opinion is set there is nothing you can do To better the way he talks to you or treats you. Not very understanding, especially with everything that's going on. Students are humans too.
I showed up 15 minutes late to the first class - read the schedule wrong. When I walked in, he stopped lecturing, turned to me, & scolded me for being irresponsible. I was on the verge of tears & almost walked out & dropped the class, but decided to stay in & spite him by getting the highest grade in the class, which I did. I ended up liking him.
Awful. Doesn't respond to emails, gives vague feedback, contradicts himself in grading, will take credit off for microscopic errors (example extra space between words). Way too much homework. Acts like this class is your main priority. Do not recommend.
He is beyond pretentious. So nitpicky and takes off an insane amount of points for the smallest of errors. The way that he critiques your writing is outright rude, not constructive. He is not understanding. Don't expect to have a life at all if you take this class. I wish I never took this class and I literally cry when I have to do work for it
I began class with a low C and ended up with an A just by listening to his very constructive and helpful feedback. Of course you have to actually read as it is a literature class, but its enjoyable! He helps you fully understand the material and always engages w/ students so that we understand the literary concepts. Not easy, but rewarding.
The worst professor I have had all my years of college. Flat out rude, incredibly unprofessional and responds to emails in a judgmental way. Gives a ridiculous amount of homework, acknowledges that its a lot and proceeds to assign more. Does not speak to students in an encouraging way and tears them down. Harsh grading and not constructive.
Though theres a bunch of extra credits opportunities, hes still a tough grader. Points being taken off for smallest errors. He likes science. The assigned readings basically are all about science. Hes quite pretentious. The craziest thing he ever done in this class is that we were required to finish a novel within the last 2 weeks of semester.
Incredibly unprofessional and derogatory towards students. Frequently tells students they are under performing. Refuses to answer students' questions that he deems "too basic" or "should have learned earlier". Highly pretentious in his mannerisms.
This professor was my favorite Ive ever taken at NOVA. He is a hard grader, but he really does give you all the tools you need for writing and composition. If you really want to improve your skills take him! Unfortunately my mother was diagnosed w cancer then covid so I had to withdraw, I really wish I could have finished his class.
I'm so glad I took Dr. A's Sci-Fi Lit class. I got to read a lot of incredible literature. If you do the reading, go to class, and participate, you will have a great time and get an A. Classes are fun if you've done the reading. While Dr. A might seem brusque at times, he's actually very nice. The extra credit opportunities are bountiful.
Although Professor Schuhart is very amusing and eccentric in lectures, the few times I was able to meet with him after class he came across as rather rude, pretentious and had a tendency to sprinkle his own political views into lectures trying to be funny. Very harsh grader for such vague instruction. Nearly turned me away from Science fiction.
Had so much fun during his class, he makes the funniest comments about the random things he is very nice and really tuff when it comes to grading paper. 10/10 would take again
Professor Schuhart is well respected full of wisdom, sharpens the mind of his students. If you take his class, you will like it. As for me English is my second language, but he helped me until I understand it, of course he is patient. He is fair in grading when you do your homework. Great teacher.
Art Schuhart is a rude, crass, professor who spends more time talking about his own life than actually caring about his students. Provides no feedback on papers, which he assigns every week. Better off taking literally anyone else.
Dr. Schuhart was probably the best English professor that I have had. Although he is a bit bold with his ideologies and viewpoints, his authenticity is inspiring and he constantly promotes debate and thinking in his lecture. Many people here have labeled him as "pretentious," but I think that's just because they are insecure about their self-worth.
Encouragees students to think for themselves, in-person classes were enjoyable. He had a rep for grading harshly (not a prob for me, but if writing isn't "your subject", you may struggle). Weekly papers, not a ton of feedback (for this course level). Highly don't recommend for online/hybrid courses. I liked the challenge, but a stressor for many.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS!!!!!!!! DON'T TAKE HIM NO MATTER WHAT. He is super hard to get ahold of outside of class, very poor feedback, disrespectful, degrades a majority of his students, you will lose points if he feels like you don't deserve it, VERY boring class always dropping the MOST UNFUNNY JOKES. hit word cap.still more to say
Don't take his class if you wanna fail, he is not a good teacher at all
This professor is not helpful at all instead of making you a better writer he will guilt trip you and make you feel bad for messing up on the smallest mistake on a paper. His assignments never end each week you'll have to write a paper. He is probably the worst teacher at NOVA. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
Probably the best Professor of English and American literature in my life! He gives you challenges through which you can significantly improve your writing and reading skills! But beware, there are no easy grades. English is not my first language. However, with Dr. Schuhart, it became my favorite one.
Best professor, highly recommend him for Eng, watch the movie, 112. Easy to follow class and homework. Read Jurassic park and also watch the movie and be ready to write about it towards the end of class.
His class is challenging, but it's clear he believes in pushing us to grow. While some may find the workload intense, his commitment to delivering a meaningful and enriching learning experience is undeniable. If you're looking to genuinely improve your skills, this class is worth the effort. Unfortunately most young adults cannot recognize this.
If you don't like being called out randomly DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Also he does not care why you are absent, you will lose points. I WAS IN THE ER DYING, showed proof and he did not care, I lost the points and that is what made the difference for an A and B. Not to mention his class sucks and its all about him and what he likes. 100% DONT RECOMMEND
One of the best English Professors I've had. He is a little challenging, but he offers a lot of extra credit, revisions on assignments, and is pretty clear in his expectations. There are two pretty straight forward papers, a book to read, and a research essay. He really seems to care about his students and helping them become better writers.
Professor Schuhart can be a tough grader, but if you stay engaged and utilize resources like unstuck ai for study prep, you'll gain valuable writing skills. The workload is heavy, but the class is manageable with dedication.
Professor is good, he cares about preparing you for higher education. Sarcastic and snippy at times. Being on time is very important. Don't take his class if you hate writing papers, but he makes you write to get you better at it.
