*READ IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING TAKING THIS* I know rate my professor is not the most reliable and even I was reluctant to get influence by it bc every student is different. I was good at math in HS, he managed to confused all my prior calc knowledge. Do not take this class, you're better off just waiting until next semester. I regret it everyday.
Sharma is very good at math and he can clear up all the questions you have about the problems in your homework, in class, or elsewhere. His lectures are clear and he presents the concepts very well. He's so thorough with his explanation that students can sometimes get lost though (that's why most students don't like his lectures).
For the love of god if you value your GPA just wait to take 16A until next semester when you can take it on main campus. Arun is a brilliant mathematician but teaching a course catered to non-math majors is absolutely NOT his strong suit. He focuses more on proofs and theory than actual application of the concepts to business settings. DO NOT TAKE
Professor Sharma is a very hard teacher. If you have never taken Calculus, this class will definitely be a challenge for you. Don't skip lessons and always go to office hours. Take the practice midterms and finals that he gives out before the tests. This class is meant for you to work hard. I slack off a couple of times and barely passed.
I would not recommend taking Sharma's class unless you received a 5 on AP Calc AB and/or also took AP Calc BC. I found the class extremely difficult and had taken AP Calc AB in high school. Sharma is a smart guy and the class is well organized but he goes way more in depth than what is needed. On campus 16A is much easier. Regret taking.
Sharma's quizzes were definitely more difficult than the homework but not to the point where they are unmanageable. If you study the material and attend lecture/office hours this class will not be too bad. He was always very accessible, especially during midterm/finals with extended office hours.
Overall a nice guy. Exams arent easy, but if you put in the work youll see the results especially if you use his resources (past quizzes etc)
If you've taken IB SL/HL math, this course will be mostly review. He plans his lectures well, and explains clearly with many examples. Hw is calculator allowed, which makes them a bit harder, but the workload way less than Math 1B, which I'm currently taking on campus. Definitely an easy grader (gives a lot of partial points if you just attempt it)
Arun Sharma is my absolute favorite teacher! I am halfway through my first semester at Cal and took his class without having taken Precalculus. Since I joined the class late I was a little behind, but Arun Sharma is incredible caring and accessible and he really wants you to do well. He has a lot of office hours and answers emails very quickly.
He is a brilliant mathematician, but the way he teaches lectures are completely different than shown on the exams. He is only able to explain in a singular fashion and doesn't go into how you understand certain topics. Very confusing!
Overall, if you have taken any level calc course before this class is an easy A. Lectures are pretty boring and the examples/homework differ from what is tested but as long as you have a good understanding of the material it is not difficult. He is pretty generous with partial credit which is nice.
A bit off-putting at first, but genuinely cares about student outcomes and will help you reach a point of understanding. He's just getting into teaching upper-div math classes, and I'd say he does a good job of it
Best Professor I've ever had! No accent and fairly clear pronunciation! Professor Sharma explained every concept clearly and thoroughly with lots of good examples! He answered emails with an amazing speed and he is really helpful to students! World's best abstract algebra course!
Prof Sharma is excellent at lecturing. I'm not a math major, but math 113 with Sharma was not bad bc his lectures are solid. Just put in the work and you will be fine. He's extremely accessible outside of class (his cell number is on the syllabus lol) and overall a 10/10 Prof. Would take a class w him again.
He was very helpful and receptive in class and gave quick, detailed, and helpful feedback on homework and exams (which were fair). He clearly cared a lot about his students' well-being and was very on top of grading, lectures, and communication, with clear and organized lectures. I would definitely take another class from Professor Sharma!
Great math professor. Goes through a bunch of examples and gives out fair study guides. Also accessible outside of class.
Hard class. He definitely makes you work for an A. I recommend having prior calc experience (I took Calc AB senior year of hs). HW due Saturday nights, weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and 1 final. Weekly quizzes werent too bad. Gives very helpful review packets for midterm/final. Very quick in answering questions on Piazza and gives good feedback!
Definitely a hard class (especially if you haven't taken calc before). He was always clear in lectures and really makes sure that the students understood the content. VERY homework and quiz heavy, and exams are challenging, so you should prepare a lot for it. Would recommend this class, but just a note that it requires a lot of time and effort!
Professor Sharma genuinely cares about his students learning the material. He systematically explains the concepts in a way that is easier to digest.
Terrible professor. Gives us easy homework and ends up giving us extremely difficult midterms? On top of that, when literally the entire class complained about how unreasonable the test was to him, he indirectly told us to suck it up and that we were overreacting. No accountability, nothing!
Arun is a good lecturer; I learned a lot in his class. The homework isn't too bad, but quizzes and exams are challenging. He puts different kinds of questions on quizzes and exams that you won't see on the homework and lectures. He provides useful study guides before each exam, so use those to study up.
Professor Sharma is very knowledgeable and teaches relatively well but I have to say that tests are just much harder than the level of diffculty found in hws and problems went over in class. The study guides helped very little and the amount of time given for the test was far too little for the level of difficulty. I hope I'm no the only one here.
I'm here to save his ratemyprofessor rating because he's genuinely great and has gotten a lot of hate because of the first midterm. Provides lots of resources for practice - literally a new worksheet every week. The frequency of tests is a little annoying but I'm not gonna lie, they've helped me absorb the material. Highly recommend!
This man is so dense. Although he offers a lot of resources and is extremely accessible outside of class, he has been one of the least accommodating professors through online learning during the pandemic. He is very knowledgable about the material but is not the best at explaining. The textbook helps more
Math16B was hard, no doubt, but I think that's more because calculus is hard, to begin with. Arun hosted over 5, 2-hour long office hours a week, and was very good at explaining the concepts we were learning about. A solid choice for a course that I don't think will ever be "fun" for non-math majors.
Tests and quizzes were very challenging and Prof. Sharma definitely makes you work to get a good grade in his class. There are quizzes and homework assignments every week. However, he is very responsive on Piazza and has lots of office hours especially when exams are coming up. His lectures were decent over Zoom as he used a whiteboard to write on.
This class, by nature, is a very difficult class. However, Prof Sharma does a great job at teaching the material in a way that is easy to digest. Exams were a bit hard compared to class lecture but they were curved very well to offset that.
This professor is the only professor at cal who truly works to be accessible to his students, he has extremely flexible office hours and responds on piazza almost immediately. He is a great professor highly recommend.
Professor Sharma offers well thought out lectures and his class is almost entirely based off of exams. It is clear that Prof. Sharma cares about the success of his students, and if you seek help he is happy to offer. However, at times, Prof. Sharma assumes a lot of knowledge and can move rather quickly.
Throughout most of the class I was confused. When I started to finally understand the material we would move on quickly so it was really hard to keep up. Prof Sharma does care about his students and he is kind but it is really difficult to keep up in his lectures everything feels so fast paced.
Professor Sharma truly cares about his students. He gives out review worksheets almost every week for extra practice and uploads the pdf of every single quiz and midterms we have taken along with the solutions and explanations. He responds to piazza posts and emails very quickly and is understanding of the circumstances. I highly recommend!
Prof Sharma gets a bad rep but he is the nicest, most accessible professor I've had so far. He goes out of his way to answer questions, especially during finals/midterms season with OH late at night. The class itself is difficult and he may not be the most personable person, but he cares about his students and truly wants them to succeed. Curves!!
This guy is the worst. He is awful at translating his thoughts and knowledge into actual good lessons He does not know how to teach. hw and tests are nothing alike. This man needs to figure it out.
Professor Sharma taught every lecture as though we knew the material and there was never a time you would leave feeling you genuinely knew that day's content. The tests were insanely hard, and the review sheets we were given helped marginally at best. The grading was sporadic and there was no standardization on test grades. Avoid this class.
Prof Sharma truly cares about students and is very accessible through Piazza and email. While lectures go off track at certain points, he tries his best to get the point across. Uploads quiz and exam solutions soon after. Class is curved generously.
Sharma is the most caring professor I've ever experienced so far in my life. He accommodates well, given reasonable circumstances, and responds to practically every single question he has ever received with a thoughtful and informative response. As long as you understand homework and review sheets, there should be no problem doing his exams.
Cool guy who has clear lectures. The pace of the class is good with weekly quizzes that serve as a good checkup since they aren't difficult. Midterms are pretty rough but he offers a curve and plenty of prep material
This prof has a Piazza response time of like 10 seconds, istg. The midterms and final are accurate representations of lectures and the study material provided. Very flexible but clear on expectations. Loved Prof. Sharma, he is so accessible and really wants to ensure that you succeed. Literally responds to Piazza at midnight the day b4 final
Prof Sharma's class is tough, but doable! You must be self disciplined to do well by attending lecture and discussion, doing the HW, and working through the review sheets on your own. Even though his review sheets are not mandatory or graded, these were the most helpful resources. He is very accessible outside class, but isn't very accommodating.
His lectures are so unorganized. He'll go on a five minute tangent about how long to make the fraction line. His quizzes are extremely difficult because they're all based on concepts and he won't give us any examples in class. I recommend taking this class with a different professor or at community if you can.
His lectures are all over the place. He goes on little tangents and we get so little done through lecture. His quizzes look nothing like the homework, his midterm looks nothing like the quizzes. If you are an architecture student, just take Math 1A, this class is heavy on business topics that you probably don't care about (like me).
Sharma's a good person but an AWFUL lecturer. Only thing I've learned from him is that bad Berkeley professors exist. He seems to really care about us but he just DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO teach; he rambles about "theoretical" stuff during lectures and is useless in OH. We have to teach ourselves! His tests are VERY difficult yet he insists they're fair.
He doesn't use bcourses at all. His lectures are confusing and not helpful for homework and quizzes. He uses pen and paper and projects it, which makes it hard to read. He doesn't show all his steps so it is hard to understand when looking back at notes. He does not know how to teach.
Arun is a nice professor! I like how his lectures are very clear and he explains math concepts and processes very, very clearly. It is kinda hilarious but he feels a bit like Professor Snape in office hours -- sounds strict. But don't worry he is really kind and helpful.
Awesome professor, 100% recommend
Not sure why his ratings are so high. Unless you have prior calc experience and are a goat at math, you won't get a good grade. His explanations will confuse you and will put you to sleep. I recommend taking this class with a different professor. Simply learning from the book is not enough.
Lectures are very hard to understand much of his teaching is mental math, I took precalc & AP stats in high school and felt completely lost in this class. Theres no engagement with students during lectures. There are weekly quizzes & are based off hw but neither the hw or quizzes help you with the midterms.
Not sure why his ratings are so high. Currently enrolled in his class and am not even sure what grade I have. I just know it's bad though. Not a good lecturer, super boring. I'm teaching myself through the book rn and even then it's not enough to pass the quizzes. Don't take him, take 16A at community or something if you can!!
Great professor! Very straightforward lectures, easy to follow, extremely manageable homework (1-2 hours a week).
great professor!
Prof Sharma is the sweetest prof ever. He changed the curving of the class so that everyone can get a better grade. He is literally available anytime outside of the lecture (he responds SO fast for hw help). He truly cares about the students' understanding of the class. Tests are much easier than the review sheets he provides so DO NOT be scared!
Truly a caring, innovative, and compassionate teacher! Would be an absolute honor to have him again!
I took pre-calc & AP Calc in HS and somehow I was still lost in this course. Lectures are hard to sit through, GSI's are tough, and exams/quizzes are nothing like HW. I know way too many people who have cried over this class. I only give him a 3 because he tries to be accessible & curves generously. Take stats instead if you can though.
He's aware of students being behind but can't give advice to become better besides "practice". Hw is fair once you get it but the quizzes are nothing like the hw and the midterms are 2x as hard. Lectures are hard to understand, problems he solves mentally, you're more focused on writing down notes than learning. He does curve. midterm 5 questions!
Other professors for this class allow note sheets and final score replacing midterm score. He does not. He only drops one quiz, no homeworks. He gives extremely long homework and is frustrating when answering questions. He does not allow access to old exams, only review sheets.
Lots of hw, good prof.
Lectures were tough to sit through midterms and quizzes were on the review sheets helped but most of it was outside work on my own or with my gsi pls pls pls do not take this classsss if you can avoid it
Lectures are hard to follow as he rambles a lot about random details. The quizzes and exams are hard but the worksheets and review sheets are 10x harder than the homework (and the actual tests honestly) so it's difficult to study for. He doesn't offer extra credit and his grading policies are quite strict (even with strike adjustments).
Took calc ab; understood the material. Cannot imagine having Sharma as an intro to calc. Quizzes & review are incredibly difficult. Lectures are difficult to follow, but necessary (only way to familiarize yourself with how he write exam questions). Homework is easy but tedious. (personally) exams were easier than quizzes, reviews, etc. Take 1a.
Hard to follow, rambles left and right, not straightforward at all, lectures and discussions do not harmonize, nothing good other than the option to get help from him.
Professor Sharma is definitely one of the most caring professors I have ever had. His classes use ed discussion for questions and announcements and he is almost always on there answering questions that students ask (response time usually
People say lectures are hard to follow but honestly if you pay attention, what he covers is what he tests. The examples in notes are always relevant and essential. Super accessible outside of class, very generous in terms of grading and making it equitable and beneficial for his students. Exams are always easier than the review and worksheets.
As long as you go to lectures and do the homework, you'll easily pass his class. For this year's finals he gave us the option to choose 3 different versions and the one we chose was an 8 question free response around 2 hours. Sharma is the GOAT and I would recommend him to anyone taking the class next year!
Prof Sharma is always willing to answer students questions and is extremely active on ed; however, I found his lecture style to be rather hard to follow. He tends to be very detail oriented, often getting bogged down in minute details during lecture. I learned the most from the textbook. Review sheets were significantly more difficult than exams.
Genuinely such a good and caring person, but horrible lecturer in my personal opinion. He answers his emails quickly and is very active on EdStem. I was sick almost all of this semester and I was able to postpone my midterms and quizzes (although the difficulty increased), but I'm glad those were options rather than being forced to take them sick.
Arun is a good guy who cares about his students and is prompt to answer any of your questions. He really wants you to succeed, but lectures are just sometimes hard to follow. He works with the flow and will change things around in order to ensure a fair and equitable experience for all. His tests are hard, but he curves nicely.
Answer questions relatively quick on ed. Adjusted the grading scale due to the strike. Honesty his lectures are hard to follow along but if you do will on the quiz and do the homework, you will be fine.
Professor Sharma had really clear and thorough lectures that helped me a lot. He also made himself available for students by having many office hours and answering questions by email or discussion almost immediately. In FPF, he is also very lenient and understanding with grading quizzes and exams.
Professor Sharma is an absolute genius and math legend. With the GSI strike he has been extremely communicative and understanding and he really worked hard to make sure the students were prepared for the exam. He replies to emails and ed discussion posts within minutes and is a very fair grader. I wish he was teaching my math class next semester.
This course was extremely difficult. Lectures were very unclear and the material was taught as though we already knew it. Quizzes were not the same as the homework and it didn't help that my GSI couldn't teach. Sharma is a great guy however and responds and accommodates to students very quickly.
Prob the most accessible/caring instructor ive ever had! Don't be scared if he starts talking about complex stuff in lecture or "mistakes not to make," he's just explaining the "why" behind concepts and genuinely wants his students to do well. Textbook is helpful. Take advantage of Ed!!! Exams are just on the core concepts, no squares line etc :)
Professor Sharma is a great professor who cares about his students and their success. He is extremely helpful with questions and responds fast over email or ED. I found the first midterm difficult, but his grading is very fair. His lectures are very straight to the point and really help you prepare for the quizzes. He is a great professor!
The worksheets were most beneficial. For me to give a professor a 4 or 5, they would have to be inspirational or help me be interested, which I wasn't. I put in a lot of my free time into going to the OH's (as someone who didn't take calc in high school). It was hard to keep up with the material, especially after the first midterm.
Math 16A is, in my opinion, a very difficult class. I had to study more for this class than my other 12 units' worth of classes combined! The good news is that the exams are curved well. Sharma is a lenient grader, but a bad lecturer. I learned more from studying the book than from attending class. Do the homework w/o cheating and you should be ok.
No slides, presents content w/pen and paper making it hard to take notes. Weekly quizzes were annoying, lectures often hard to follow, exams were difficult but curved reasonably, and weekly homeworks were lengthy. Cared for students by updating grading scales, uploading lectures, and being on Ed basically 24/7. Very caring but NOT for everyone.
Curves and adjussting grading scale are really reasonable, good at taking feedback. His worksheets are more difficult than the midterm and final itself which makes it a little frustrating on how to properly study for the midterms and exams. However, exams not overly difficult seeing how reasonable the calculations and concepts being tested were.
Lectures could be a bit boring but still solid. Gives review sheets before exams that are harder than the actual exam - prepares you well. Exams are fair and graded extremely quickly. Overall a very solid experience in this class, I would recommend it.
Professor Sharma is one of the best professors I've had at Berkeley. He has office hours almost every day, and he is extremely accessible outside of class. He understands that math is a tough subject for many students, and he makes his lectures extremely digestible for non-math people. 10/10 would recommend
Professor Sharma is really accessible, and he answered questions very patiently. He graded fast so you can get the feedback quickly. Recommended:)
Our notes consisted of paragraphs that made no sense honestly. The test were awfully difficult. The only things keeping me up were the textbooks and weekly quiz that I would hold onto to do good. He's genuinely a sweet person, but he cannot teach. The only kids who excelled in the course were those in ap calc even then it was a slight struggle.
Very good Professor. Lectures were clear. He made a continuous effort to assign us questions that were different and harder to well prepare us for exams. Gave detailed instructions for everything and several study/review materials so we have ample practice. Amazing!
He delivers the lecture in an amazingly clear and logical way. He always makes review questions hard to help people to prepare. He took later work even though he needed to upload them mutually. He kept working till 2 a.m. and gave responses to questions on Ed in 30 minutes. SO REACHABLE and RESPONSIBLE.
He is so helpful. Never hesitate if you have the chance.
Helpful lectures as well as weekly pop quizzes (easy if you prepare). Professor's indeed very meticulous, talks a lot and as someone mentioned writes paragraphs during lectures. However, in my opinion this was a plus since "the paragraphs" were taken from the textbook (which you DON'T need to buy thanks to this exact reason). Btw I never took Calc.
My first impression of him was not so great, especially reading the past RMP reviews. But as I progressed through the course I've come to enjoy his lectures and realized he cares a lot about his students. He is extremely accessible on Ed was willing to make generous grading adjustments accordingly after midterms. Def a great professor to take
I personally would not take a class with this professor again as during class Arun seems to talk to himself/ not projecting to his students, which makes students somewhat lost. A lot of times you can see students sleeping in class. He moves on very fast and I wish his lectures were recorded.
Professor Sharma is the most accessible teacher I've ever had. He's very active on our class EdDiscussion page and offers many opportunities to make up quizzes/exams/hw for folks who are sick or for personal reasons. His lectures are good at giving many examples of often confusing sides of concepts that might trip us up during HW/exams!
lectures align clearly with homework assignments and worksheets. very accessible outside class online and office hours are frequent. optional worksheets for exam review are harder than actual exam, which is a great way to prepare.
Arun is lowkey a bad teacher although he is super nice. I stopped going to lecture and learned by myself because I simply couldnt understand anymore. His worksheets and homework are just like the weekly quizzes so thats nice. Exams pretty difficult tho. Not an easy A if ur not good at math.
Prof. Sharma is super accessible. He responds to homework questions on Ed discussion and emails within minutes. He gives many opportunities for quiz make-ups, sends emails with reminders about homework that's due, and really seems like he wants his students to do their best.
He's okay at teaching. Don't expect to learn solely based on his lectures. Expect to try harder if you don't have a calc background. Do homework, worksheets (use them to study for weekly quizzes, exact format but easier), and practice exams. He's super active in Ed discussions. One time I had a question at 1 am and he responded 2 minutes later.
He is an amazing guy, but not the best lecturer. Most of the time he just does math on the board and moves on with little to no explanation. If you plan on taking this course I'd advice to have some calc experience at hand. If not, you'll pretty much be learning calc 1A all on your own. He is a very caring guy though.
mid, don't take. you will struggle, trust. source: trust me bro.
Not a great lecturer; some concepts become confusing & need to be self-taught, but he cares about his students which makes up for it. Accessible outside of class for everything. Gives lots of make-up quizzes and lots of practice questions of varied difficulty for midterms & finals. Communicates with students & is always active on Ed
Not a clear lecturer/writes w/ paper and pen and DOESN'T keep them. He posted lecture videos from the summer course that didn't have many examples. He blows by concepts and rarely explains them. Over explains rules/formulas that most people accept. I struggled w/o any prior calculus experience. You WILL likely have to teach yourself. He nice tho ig
If you're feeling lost with the course, I highly recommend going to his office hours or asking on Ed. Like no joke I'm sure he single-handedly answered every 799 threads on the Math 16A Ed and he has office hours pretty much every day, even online. ALSO, buy the textbook. It helps a lot to review on your own and then go to his office hours.
Not the best nor worst lecturer. Is pretty lenient with makeup quizzes and offering students multiple chances to maintain/improve their grades. Be ready to teach yourself most of the content since his lectures won't really get you no where. Super accessible outside of class and accommodates to any emergency. Online and ready to answer questions
If math is not your thing, Arun Sharma is not the guy to learn it from. He's very fast-paced, and moves through content without explaining much of it. Study guides are notoriously more difficult than actual exam, which frustratingly makes it harder to prepare. There are section quizzes weekly in discussion. Super accessible outside of class though!
Although Arun is a very caring and accessible professor outside of class, it is extremely difficult to succeed if you do not have any prior calculus knowledge. Lectures were too fast paced and difficult to understand. Weekly homework and quizzes were due on topics taught the prior week, which made it difficult to stay on track.
Really not a great lecturer, but he does genuinely care for his students and wants them to do well. I basically learned nothing from his lectures and just studied the homework and solutions he gave for quizzes/exams, but I have a lot of respect for his accessibility and responsiveness via Ed/email.
lectures don't rlly help so get ready to watch youtube videos. EXTREMELY accessible outside of class and will always answer ur Ed questions within minutes. TAKE THURSDAY disc section so u can study off of Tuesday disc quizzes. Midterm/final review sheets are exponentially harder than the actual tests so dont fret about that. overall you'll be fine
Very fast grader, returns quizzes the next day, midterms in 2-3 days, and the Final in 3-4 days. Good lecturer, and describes the content very well, although those without prior calculus knowledge, might have a tough time in class. Gives partial credit and is generous about it. Clearly states what is in the tests and replies fast for emails.
I would agree with others on this thread that he sometimes is a little difficult to follow, however, I'd vouch that if you attend his lectures consistently across the semester, you'll learn to keep up with his faster lecturing style. I attended every lecture and this worked for me, but most people (at least 75% of the class) don't.
Amazing professor. Sharma is so kind and helpful to his students. Really enjoyed his class and he is a very good professor.
I'm going to be honest, I went to lectures 2-3 times this semester. I still passed because of his generous curves. He's on Ed discussion 24/7, even at like 1am he will respond in 5 minutes. The most caring prof. Just go to lectures, don't cheat on homework, and show up to discussion to do well. He curves a lot, but it will never neg. affect you.
dude lives on ed stem. my goat make sure to submit every homework and at least understand the concepts; reading textbook and watching organic chem tutor was best for me. generous curves and quiz difficulty depends on gsi/luck. overall very satisfied
The professor cares a lot about his students. His grading is very fair. You still need to put in a decent amount of work outside of the class. But very manageable if organized and on top of things. Great prof, in my opinion. Wish he taught 16B in the spring.
not the best lecturer, taking calc before will help. He is super good at responding to messages. quizzes are easy but exams may be difficult. class covers a lot of Calc AB content/can get super tedious sometimes. As someone who has taken calc before, he did an okay job explaining things, my understanding of materials was from prior knowledge
Great professor! While his lectures can get a little dry after a bit, it is still manageable if you are actually motivated. He is very very accessible, either on Ed, email, or office hours. He seems like he enjoys his job, which is always a good thing. If you took either AB or BC in high school you most likely will do decent in math 16a.
Lectures are a bit unclear at times but the class was not very difficult for me, although I did pass the BC exam in high school. Weekly quizzes were scary at first but manageable, although he drops only one quiz. The midterms and final essentially makeup your grade so be prepared for those. Do the homework and go over his review sheets.
Good fairly easy math class to fulfill a math req (basically just AP Calc AB). Lectures were monotonous but were recorded and posted, office hrs very accessible, two midterms and a final, weekly hw took about three hours, quizzes at every discussion section, and never used the textbook.
As a person, Arun Sharma is a great guy. He's incredibly caring, responds nearly instantly to emails, is incredibly active on his Ed Discussion forum, and overall a joy to communicate with. His faults come with his teaching style, which is incredibly technical, theoretical, and difficult to understand for someone not adapted to STEM or math topics.
When it comes down to it, Professor Sharma was an incredibly understanding individual. HEAVILY curved class. I took Calc AB in high school which made this class incredibly easy, although, if I had not come into college with the knowledge I had already had, I found that Sharma wasn't the best at helping students grasp concepts.
As someone who didn't even learn PreCalc, I somehow managed an A- and here's what you need to know. Homework is tedious but prof is very accessible with OH, there are weekly quizzes, review sheets are much harder than midterms and quizzes; I personally just reviewed the HW problems again, grades very leniently, and sometimes lectures can confusing.
Professor Sharma is a great professor! He answers the Ed Discussion questions immediately and explains the concept well. There is some self-studying, but it is not that bad. As long as you review and fully understand the concepts, the quizzes and exams will not be difficult to do. For the worksheets, it does not help that much to prepare for exams.
Literally the best professor. He has OH From Monday - Saturday, and is one of the few professors I've seen that will really go above and beyond to help his students. He is incredibly accommodating of people's schedules, and even gave different grading options to maximize people's final grade. He's honestly a great guy to get to know, go to OH!!!
Amazing professor imo, literally on ED answering student questions until midnight often. As long as you go to class, do HW, study, and DO THE REVIEW GUIDES (test questions are a breeze if you can do these since they are much harder) the class is easy and the curve is pretty good usually. He can over-explain ideas at times is my only critique.
came in with little knowledge about calc ab and was so fearful of this class but ended with an A. Sharma is great. He grades fpf same day! lecture isn't necessary but I would recommend still going. Be ready to study heavy for quizzes and tests as that is 90% of your grade collectively. Lenient grader too, very happy w this class. Sharma the goat.
Arun was a good professor, however I would not recommend taking the class if you cannot handle fast-paced learning. I'm personally not great at math, which is why I received the grade I did. He is generous with curving and it will never negatively impact you. Homework is a lot. Overall a super caring teacher who is very accessible to work with.
He is not a bad professor whatsoever. Most of the people's cons that they had for Sharma were that they didn't like his teaching style, which is valid but also subjective. Grading policies were fair and he is super accommodating. Quizzes happened every week during discussions, two midterms, and a final. Go to class and study outside of class time!
Not the best lecturer but that's subjective. He is, however, the most caring professor I've had at Cal. Constantly on ED and replies within a few hours and even faster during exam seasons. He cares about his students doing well by curving and changing grading bins. If you are a person who can self-study content, you'll be fine in this class.
He is incredibly accessible and approachable. He is quite organized and takes feedback very well. His explanations are somewhat abstract and theoretical, but do provide you a good basis for future classes. Ask him questions! He is very friendly.
Taking with Math 54. He's OK as a lecturer, and has been getting better with examples and clear explanations over time. He sets reminders regarding homework and has forgiving policies.
Professor Sharma is one of my favorite professors at Cal. He is super accessible outside of lecture: has OH everyday except Saturday, has online zoom options at night, and responds to Ed super fast. He creates super in depth HW solutions after HW is due as well as in depth midterm/final review sheets.
I took xMath1A in fall 2022 as part of FPF. Prof Sharma is extremely accessible outside of class and very patient! I spent 10+ hours at his office hours every week during my entire freshman year (he was also a GSI for math1b in my spring) working on problems and asking him a bunch of questions. Sharma was the reason I survived calculus at Berkeley!
Professor Sharma is the sweetest. I am touched by how diligent he is in attempting to help students.
Sharma might be Berkeley's biggest yapper. For actually learning the material his lectures weren't helpful. He talks in circles and doesn't do many examples. Outside of the teaching part, he the goat tho. Super active on Ed and email, great clobber, detailed homework explanations, & seems like he genuinely cares. Just read the textbook to learn tho
Highly recommend just watching the lecture recordings and going to discussion instead of lecture. He talks A LOT about somewhat irrelevant topics and not examples so it's confusing. HOWEVER, he is super quick to respond on Ed and gives great exam prep material so it ends up being worth it. Most communicative professor I've had.
he write his email the way he talks (a LOT A LOT). his lecture are not helpful, so i learned this course on my own by reading the text book. (if you were to do that please go to discussion, it will help a lot). But he is so helpful tho. he is so communicative He tons and tons of office hour and is VERY VERY ready to help student.
You would think a math for humanities class would be quite simple but no. It is so easy to get lost in lecture and he talks a lot. You might be fine if you are confident in your self-teaching and math in general. Side note apart from the professor my gsi did not grade anything so going into the midterms we did not know what to work on.
Sometimes lectures are hard to follow but his online videos really help understand the material!!! Some questions on quizzes are definitely tougher so it's important to study. This class probably took the most time compared to all my classes!
I gave Arun a 5 for 16A. He came in middle of the semester to save our class from Talaska who is terrible. Always available on Ed even past midnight and a nice clobber policy and quiz drops. If you go to lecture and do all assigned work u will be good. Only thing is his reviews are way too hard compared to the final, to a point they aren't helpful.
This is MY goat math professor, while the class was difficult and lectures are theory based rather than problem solving, Arun Sharma is the most caring professors I've ever had. He responds to every single ed discussion question within the hour and made many adjustments after receiving feedback that made the course very catered to the students.
Sharma is the probably the best professor I had for math so far. He does great lectures and respond to email really quickly and is always there for you during office hours. He gives me full credit for homework even if I submitted it late sometimes. The class policy had a very flexible clobber policy too! Final can cover 75%.
I'd consider him rather weak on the lectures because he's just a little bit dry, and talks with a voice that sounds condescending at times (it's pretty clear he's not though, for the record). However, he's incredibly responsive in Edstem, and generally very helpful otherwise as far as providing resources and guidance.
very lenient with grading policies
Professor Sharma cares so deeply about his students. He is so diligent in office hours (he has them literally all the time) and offers many help to those who need it. And that really is inspirational.
Extremely responsive professor and truly cares for his students. Not the strongest lecturer, so I self-taught with the book soon into the course, but he responds to all questions in great detail and does all he can to help students succeed.
Arun Sharma is such a caring professor and cares about his students and their wellbeing. He provided so many accommodations for his students and always tried to make class engaging. He was responsive to Ed. He also played along with the humor of his students. Overall, such a good teacher and helped me learn so much.
Best math professor i've had. Really cares about his students, review sheets are comprehensive, pertinent, and very useful. Lectures are crystal clear, and he spends hours and hours every week answering student's questions personally.
Very quick to respond on ED. Tests were always reasonable. Good lectures
Cares like no other. This goofy ball makes you want to learn the content and always has his students best in mind.
Great lad, has a good sense of humour and kept is going through a tricky course. Does genuinely care about students.
what an incredible experience
Amazing guy!
Prof. Sharma is one of the best professors I've had at Cal. He is so active outside of class (he had office hours on Sundays!), and it is clear he really cares about his students. Sure, he might talk a little too much, but you can still really learn a lot from him. The exams were very fair too. If you can take Sharma for any math class, do it!
Bro has a college student's schedule and always responds to Ed Discussion questions within 5 minutes no matter the time. His lectures were pretty decent and some units were for sure better than others. Also super funny and cares about his students. Made my last prereq math class the best experience.
Caring, flexible, and generally great guy. Very accomodating and accessible outside of class. Goes above and beyond in providing OH and comprehensive cheatsheets. Weekly quizzes are short and simple provided you have properly learnt the material. Lectures slightly dull and review sheets are harder than exams which were short and easy.
I had doubts about the legitimacy of Professor Sharma, as he was a last-minute sub for a different professor. Admittedly, I didn't attend many classes, but I can very easily tell that he cares a lot about his students and his Ed discussion is great. Accommodates and treats students in ways I have not seen from other professors. Great guy!
I wouldn't call Prof Sharma's first few lectures great, but he improved a lot over the course and he indeed is a very caring person. His lectures notes went even better than textbooks and he provides lots of opportunities for students to do well in his class. Great professor! We love him!
Prof Sharma is clear and communicative with student-friendly policies for the class. He is always responsive on ed discussion and truly cares about his students. Having the clobber policy and an active ed discussion are two big reasons I give Sharma this rating as they truly helped me in this class.
Had him for 16a and 16b. office hours helped so much, hes always available and responds fast. grading is fair, exams way easier than the review sheet. i hate math but if you have to take math take it with arun! and make sure to understand the hw
worst teacher ever couldn't get through a single class, midterms were exceptionally harder than homeworks and difficult to convesatewith
Although I didn't attend his lectures much, I am moved to write this review because of his undying support outside of the classroom. Prof Sharma responds to Ed posts promptly (by that I mean within 15 minutes) and stays up late to help students (by that I mean up until 4 am). If you are looking for a caring and kind professor, look no further.
Arun is an okay professor! He took over midway into the semester and was able to modify the course much better than the previous professor. His lectures will take you nowhere - it is better if you just study the material on your own and practice using his study guides. I don't understand why he is so highly rated, but still decent at most.
Best math prof ever. Considerate, caring, helpful. I've never seen any other prof here that is as responsive as Prof. Sharma to student questions on Ed.
Dr.Sharma is a great professor, just an awful final curve system. During the final half, the class couldn't hear his announcement for a question that cost most students points. Curve system was applied to the total grade and not the final grade, despite the final being a clobbered grade for most which lowered their total grade by 1-2 letter grades.
The best math professor I've had so far, he's chronically online and the exams are really predictable if you just understand the homework and the quizzes.
Had office hours 6 days a week (even on Sundays), stayed up until 4AM at times to respond to people on Ed, accepted late HW, allowed up to 3 make up quizzes before each midterm. Overall super accommodating with reasonable exams and generous grading policy (full clobber allowed).
Prof Sharma is a very accomodating professor. He understands that students' are taking many other classes and accomodates for deadlines. Lots of office hours (in our class, even on Sunday) and the grading criteria is made clear. He details his thoughts to the students in long Ed/Piazza posts.
Professor Sharma was the best for MATH 16 series (A and B)! Take the series with him if you can! Professor Sharma explains the concepts and examples very well! The worksheets are harder than the exams but similar to the HW problems.
The best professor ever!!! If you need to take Math 54, then take his class instead of taking others. He lets me earn my first A+ at Berkeley!
Sharma is EXTREMELY responsive on Ed and very accommodating. Logistically, this was probably the best-run class I've ever had at Berkeley. Offers many difficult practice problems for comparatively fair exams. Cares about student success and concerns, offering many office hours. Not the strongest lectures though as they tend to be quite proof-heavy.
GOAT. Seriously, Professor Sharma cares so much about his students and is always reasonable, accommodating, responsive, and transparent with the decisions he makes. If you take his course in the future he is very accessible on Ed. Cons: Lectures aren't the best, just okay in my opinion Pros: Everything else
Sharma is very communicative outside of class. However, your entire grade will pretty much be based on the final - and he did NOT curve the final at all... I got an A on the first midterm, A+ quiz/hw avg, but because I got a B on the final, I ended with an 87. It was all shocking and very upsetting so yeah just made sure you do well on the final...
Prof Sharma's lectures are not for everyone, and I honestly recommend watching the lecture videos on your own time and going to discussion, but he is an incredibly caring man who works very hard to meet his students where they are at. He is also very active on Ed, with pretty much every question answered within an hour!
Does not allow use of calculator, horrible lecturer! I wonder if he would have opposed the abacus! Berkeley should find a more qualified instructor that adapts technology!
He is SO approachable and takes feedback so well. He even used a student's alternative midterm reference sheet because students liked it better than his (he took a vote). He is always active on Ed with clear explanations. He really does care about helping you learn. There are several Ed threads dedicated to how incredible he is.
His lectures are straight from the book, I ended up not going and just reading the textbook which is extremely well written. His exams were super reasonable and not meant to screw you up. He responds almost instantaneously on Ed as well. I did not really utilize him or my useless GSI, the textbook is one of the best resources imo.
I took 16A+B with Prof.Sharma and he was very reasonable. As long as you can do the homework you are fine. I basically never went to class but studied from the textbook which is exactly what you needed and completed the homework which takes about 1.5 hours. He's not a great lecturer since he rambles but I preferred selfstudy. He curves tests great!
Currently taking his summer course. Notifies us before any assignments, quizzes, or exams. Practice quizzes and exams are quite similar to actual tests. Also provides additional review materials. Just awesome prof
(Summer)One of the best professors so far. I had a family emergency so I emailed him about the situation and he was very understanding and helped me out with extensions. He keeps reminding us of deadlines for assignments, which helps a lot as you lose track of things in online classes. Homeworks are lengthy but understandable due to pace in summer.
Care about students; accepted homework and didn't need excuses. Lecture was mid, sounds monotonic and sometimes hard to follow. Pace was faster compared to other classes and homework and quizzes are a bit overwhelming. Heavy weight on final (45%) and the difficulty was not really consistent across diff versions, so it could be hit or miss.
Sharma is an amazing professor! It took less than half an hour for him to reply to Edstem questions, and he always took student feedback seriously. The final was 45% of the overall grade which was pretty stressful, but his worksheets and review provided much help in studying.
Prof. Sharma is the GOAT. Test heavy (15/15/45: MT1/MT2/Final), BUT the midterms open note and final had a very detailed cheat sheet; curves also generous. HW time consuming but it's summer. Stays up to 2AM responding to student questions. Minor Critique: lectures boring, but unnecessary (I mainly only used textbook)
Professor Sharma is the undisputed GOAT. awesome teacher was very active (would respond after 10-15 min of an ed post). very test heavy tho, mt1/mt2/final is 15/15/45. don't be afraid to ask for help, gsi felt useful and he would respond to questions quick.
Prof Sharma is genuinely awesome. Almost always responds to ed discussion forum posts within like 10 minutes, and he's usually on between like 9 am and 2 am.
Sharma is a goat. His recorded lectures were a little hard to understand sometimes but if you read (skim) the textbook before watching them it makes a lot more sense. Any questions you have will be answered within minutes on Ed so do not be afraid to ask questions and it makes the course a whole lot easier. Quizzes and Homework are light.
Arun is awesome. He was extremely caring about students and respond to questions on Ed within minutes. Lectures are not really good but textbooks are all you need to study. Heavy on test, final was 45% of total grade, but he applied a super generous bin shift. Genuinely a kind person, he responded to every thank you's on Ed with different words.
he is very dedicated to the class he is teaching
Very standup guy outside of class but his lectures are not helpful at all. Reading the textbook will get you more worth out of your time. It was my first Berkeley course so I felt okay going into the final exam but was not prepared for the proof-heavy format, dropping my grade down by quite a bit.
took math54 last spring and prof sharma was the best B)
Sharma is an incredibly accommodating professor who truly cares about student success. While lectures can be dense, the grading is fair, and he's always available to help via Ed and office hours - even on weekends! unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. I've never been more unsupported by him and the GSI's. I got hit hard with a terrible GSI, who unfairly graded. He spends the whole lecture talking about how you are wrong to solve a certain problem, rather than teaching how to do it. He's a good person and is usually nice, just bad lecturer.
Horrible Lecturer, tests way harder than homeworks, quizzes vary by GSI, super boring and monotone, avoid if possible
Tests are super hard and unfair when comparing to homework, quizzes are also really bipolar anf those grades vary from GSI to GSI, practice for midterms is really ridiculous, lectures are super boring and hes very monotone which makes it more depressing. Get ready to self teach yourself everything
man i think i went to max 3 lectures this semester. no motivation to go to this bum lecture. midterm and final and quizzes were the end of me. arun is a decent lecturer he jus go to fast and no one really pays attention. too hard for being the easiest math class at Berkeley. maybe I'm jus stupid but like ts was so hard bro
Prof Sharma is definitely a goat for math 1b. His lectures aren't too bad either. Although he can be a little speedy. He's also suppper accessible outside of class as he has many oh's (including on zoom), responds so quickly to everyone on edstem, and his responses are really helpful. I find the workload pretty fair and not too time consuming.
Awful, not approachable, tells us what NOT to do rather than teaching us what we should do/how we should do it. 16A should have been an easy class if he wasn't the professor. The quizzes are totally different than the homework. Homework/notes would be easy af and then the quizzes are nothing like it.
Sharma clearly cares about his students/class. He really is a nice guy. But if you are not comfortable SELF teaching, do not take his class. Lectures are hard to follow and he doesn't teach very well at all. I didn't take any calculus in highschool and it was very difficult to learn from him. Worksheets are unreasonably difficult.
Sharma is a really difficult professor, his tests and quizzes are much harder then any homework. His lecturing is far below par for Berkeley and overall half his class is failing. He goes way to much into the math theory for a math course primarily for business and economics majors.
Good professor but some of the most boring and and hard to understand lectures. He teaches in a very theoretical and not practical way.
Arun Sharma is clearly very caring however he is a terrible lecturer, he rarely shows actual example problems and when he does it usually in order to show you what not to do.
Professor Sharma is a great professor. He's everything a college professor should be. He is organized, efficient, relatively challenging, and responds extremely quickly. While course content sped by, Professor Sharma did not leave us to fend for ourselves. He is extremely active on edstem with responses pretty much always ~
Time consuming/Prepare to teach yourself. Lectures are boring and hard to understand. He does not go in depth how to solve problems. Exams are nothing like the homework or textbook and are 10x harder. Quiz's are randomized + made up by different GSI's so the difficulty level fluctuates. Pray you get a lenient GSI because mine was an easy grader.
he is very good with responding to questions and is SO active on ed but this class is hard if you have no calc background and don't devote enough time to it! also, he goes SOOOO fast in lectures it can be a little difficult to keep up - do not skip lecture or you will fall behind!
Terrible at teaching during lectures, focuses more on what not to do than what to do. Does not explain his steps. Especially if you didn't take calc before, this is a self-study course. Responds quick on edstem, provides practice worksheets & past quizzes/tests w/ solutions & explanations. Great office hours, overall very accessible. Caring person.
Great teacher! He listens to his students and
Wasn't a big fan of Sharma at first, but realized he genuinely cares about students and listens to feedback. His grading is fair, exam prep is thorough, and final reference packet is super generous! He's also very accessible, with late-night/weekend OH and quick Ed responses. His lectures aren't for everyone, but he's a helpful and organized prof!
This was a pretty tough class but the amount of practice made up for it like the review worksheets and the even more extensive answer keys to go with them. They are a good gage of the types of questions we may see on exams and Prof is always active and helping on Ed! Lectures were pretty useless but overall not a bad class.
Honestly wasn't the biggest fan in the beginning but he's extremely accessible outside of class (office hours and ed) and genuinely cares about the success of his students! I found his lectures to be unhelpful but I also had prior knowledge from calc BC so I just used YouTube videos. Grade bins lowered, quizzes curved, regrades answered promptly :)
For a 3-unit math class, this was definitely unnecessarily tough. Review worksheets don't match exam content, and lectures are borderline useless. Many students have taken Calc AB or BC before so you have to work twice as hard to offset the curve if you haven't. Sharma is a very nice professor though, and makes himself very accessible.
hard tests and quizzes but amazing curve, he is very caring for his students
I struggled in this course for sure, the quizzes and midterms were challenging to a point but very accessible outside of class- on ED and gmail. always had office hours and even stayed till 11 pm just to answer questions. however be ready to learn from the textbook. wouldn't take again but arun definitely cares.
Sharma is very caring and accessible outside of class. If you have the patience to self teach yourself the material, then you should be able to get by. I personally found that doing a lot of problems (from review sheets + past quizzes) was particularly helpful. The review sheets are difficult but familiarize you with how questions are asked.
Curves! But you will have to work for the grade you want. Sharma is very reasonable most of the time. It is clear he cares for his students with how available he is for OH and on ED. Personally, lectures didn't help so I read the textbook and attended SLC review sessions. Also a hilarious guy imo, with his sassy way of talking/typing (compliment)!
Professor Sharma really cares about you, like genuinely, he's a good person. It's just that his lectures are insanely difficult to follow. Go to his office hours, you'll actually learn something. Don't fret, his curves are usually very generous -- I thought I was going to get my first ever C, but the cutoffs were very nice I ended with a B.
lectures don't really help with the material, he usually rambles off about random things. learn to study on your own. only things that determine your grade are the weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. tests can be hard but the curves are amazing
Not a math person but he's a very fair prof who cares about his students. Go to his OHs, and come into this class w calculus experience in high school. Lectures helped me avoid pitfalls and I found that he was quite thorough unlike some other reviews say. Work hard and just do the homework problems, make friends in this class to study together!
Caring and understand his students. Always ready to answer your questions! Replying emails even at 3 am. When you feel stressed for any reason, just ask him for a homework extension and everything will be fine. Healed my state of mind at Berkeley.
If you've NEVER TAKEN CALCULUS and can take 1A with Paulin, I say do it. 16A with Sharma was all self-study, lectures were confusing. Lots of office hours, but not very helpful. Made things harder than needed, like 90 question final review. Gave great extensions and replied to emails late at night, nice guy. I'm very thankful I passed with a C.
VERY GENEROUS CURVE! - Sometimes your grade might get curved down based on the the grading of your GSI - However, I feel like the lecture and notes didn't really help and I was better off self-studying from the Organic Chemistry Tutor. - Study guides don't match the weekly quizzes/exams
Love Sharma!!! I don't think hes the best at lecturing, but is super nice and accessible w/a TON of office hours and responds to Ed discussion quickly. If u took calc before, class should be pretty easy but if not, u might have to study more on your own. weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final (no calc use on tests) w/flexible grading scale/drop quiz.
Kind professor. Rambles on Ed a little but info gets across. Not the best lecturer BUT PLS GO TO LECTURE. I never took calculus in hs, so this class was rough. Homework took me 6+ hrs to complete, struggled on quizzes, exam review sheets, and exams themselves. Midterms had like a 5 pt curve but final curve was a bit heavier. Thank god I passed.
Wasn't best lecturer. Focused too much on background instead of how to solve problems. Examples were often left solved halfway and were rushed. However, he does care as he responds within 5-10 minutes on ED (often misinterpreted questions though) and made hours of final review videos. Quiz every Wednesday discussion GSIs graded terrible.
Lectures are mid; somewhat circuitutious reasoning and unfinished examples. Positive: lec notes posted daily & instant ED responses till 2am. Fair grading by GSIs. Personally slow at math, hw took 6-8hrs a week. Going to GSI hours and disc (Will fisher is TOP) helps a ton. Weekly quizzes are inconsistent difficulty wise, but curved.
The lectures were not that helpful. As someone who went into this class without knowing calculus, I found it hard to keep up with lectures because he tends to explain things as if they were common understanding. This was an average class; you could do well if you put effort into studying. You have to buy a textbook but you can live without it tbh.
Really does care about his students but lectures make no sense and feel very disjointed. Always responds to Ed posts within an hour so very accessible but just lectures in general were not helpful at all. Exams were not too difficult though and were quite fair.
I would definitely take a class with Sharma again! As long as you read the textbook, go through the examples, and review solutions for each quiz, you'll get an A. Do the worksheets before each quiz, the midterm reviews, and the final review, because you'll have some problems on the test/quiz that are almost exact. Also the curve was BEAUTIFUL.
Clearly cares about his students, has office hours 6 days of the week. Also gives good feedback although he completely roasts your work while doing so. But I learned a lot from him. His lectures are a little confusing and you might have to go to the textbook to figure it out. But if you ever have any questions he will make it clear for you.
Material was very easy. All just pre calculus and basic calculus. Lectures are split up very randomly. Unc responds instantly on edstem.
pretty iconic guy. very very very accessible outside of class. he's very technical and has an interesting way of speaking which may take a little bit of getting used to. scans pdfs of the textbook for hw so you don't need to buy a textbook
Your experience in this class will depend on your prior experience in calculus. As someone who had not taken calculus before, this was difficult and lectures were bad. I reached out to Sharma many times to seek help and he told me there was nothing I could do. I spent every second on this class and was able to get a B after an amazing curve.
It's 1:37am in Berkeley right now and he's still responding to EVERY single EdStem question in under 5 minutes. There's hundreds of questions coming in everyday and he somehow finds the time to instantly respond to everything. I haven't seen a single TA outside of my discussion section so far because he's absolutely ahead of the curve. God bless
He cares a lot about his students. He explains concepts well and replies to emails in a very timely manner. Simply put, he is the best mathematics professor I've had here in Berkeley. He's extremely caring and flexible when it comes to extensions and such. Love him!
Sharma was genuinely such a kind professor. You could really tell that he cared about helping his students succeed (responding to edstem posts at 3 in the morning, tons of office hours). I will say that his lectures felt a bit off topic at times, but he was very generous with curves and I had a great time in his class.
BEST RESIDENTIAL ASSISTANT EVER
Personally disliked his lecture style and how stubborn he was about any changes or improvements requested by his students. All of the visuals of his lecture were projected handwritten details in sharpie that were hard to read and went by too quickly to understand. GSIs described topics far better.
The lectures focused more on what not to do than what to do and how to do it. Sharma's notes are challenging to understand and make little sense if you did not attend the lecture. The homework is entirely different from the quizzes and tests, and the worksheets are unhelpful. Be prepared to teach yourself the majority of the course.
Honestly, his vibe is chill, grading is laid back, and he's easy to reach, but it's almost impossible to understan lectures unless you already know what he's talking about, unless you're a genius. Get ready to self-study the whole course, very disappointed with this class, since I prefer learning through the direct content, but its subpar at best.
Sharma is an exceptional math prof, love how he answers edstem questions immediately no mater the time. Despite his lectures being content heavy and fast paced, it's easy to study your notes with how his lessons are organized. Lots of quizzes, prob once every week or so, and 2 midterms as per usual. GSI matters; do practice problems!
Grading is very lenient, generous curves on tests! However, be prepared to self-learn. He is pretty bad at explaining things in a way non-mathematicians can understand. Roughly 4 hours of homework a week, including the time you have to teach yourself everything.
An effective professor at teaching Calc 1. However, lectures are fast-paced and there is a quiz every week in discussion. Wasn't too hard of a class and the homework definitely helps with exams. Lectures are not required but discussion is.
Best professor in the whole world. I've never met a professor who cares about their students more than Arun Sharma did for us. So accessible, so kind, genuinely the perfect teacher. Goes above and beyond in all aspects for his students. So much love for Prof. Sharma!!!! Thank you for being the best!
Very difficult to understand and a difficult person to work with.
Lectures r a bit difficult to understand if u don't love math, but he's the MOST caring/dedicated prof. Responds on ed instantaneously from 8am to 2am, right before hw's due. Holds tons of OH and at late times like 8-11pm before quizzes/deadlines. re-records lost lec vids and records hrs of exam review for us. fair curves if exams r difficult too!
Sharma is cool and super active on ed but one of the WORST lecturers ive had. You'll basically be self-studying the entire course and his grading policy is subpar at best. He also gatekeeps the answer keys for his exam reviews under some weird assumption that its more beneficial to students, releasing it ~2 days before the exam, which really sucks.
Anybody on here hating on Sharma have no idea how good they go it. I am not the perfect linear algebra student by any means but I actually ended up liking this class a lot more than I thought. Sharma is INCREDIBLY caring and wants you to succeed. Generous curves, fair grading policies, posts extremely clarifying content, responds within MINUTES
Super caring prof, always accessible outside of class. Responds in seconds on ED. The only bad thing is that his lectures aren't good at all :(. He doesn't have many resources, but seeing as this was his second semester teaching 54, this is understandable. Basically is a self-study class, which is pretty difficult with a subject like lin-alg :(
Sharma's lectures are very fast-paced and hard to follow. This class was very much self-taught; however, he offered a good curve at the end of the semester. There are quizzes every week along with two midterms and one final. The quizzes actually help to keep you on top of the coursework. I wouldn't take him again but he is not terrible.
GOAT. Sharma is unlike any prof (let alone math prof) I've had at Cal in my 2 years so far. He is manic in terms of how organized and present he is. I don't know when he sleeps. He literally is on Ed (the forum for the class) 24/7. So kind, responsive and accommodating. Super fair course. Just do the weekly homeworks closely and you'll do well.
Sharma the GOAT. Sharma is a very caring professor, always responsive on the ED Discussion, tons of office hours throughout the week. In my opinion, lectures weren't too helpful; honestly, you do most of the learning through reading the textbook and practicing by doing the homework. Tests were fair, and the tests that had lower averages got curved.
Not a good lecturer but is super fair. Going to OH and discussion section matters since the exams have some curveballs and it's important to be prepared for anything on his exams and to grasp the concepts. Once diff-eqs hit, I was completely lost and checked out LOL
Professor Sharma was the most accommodating professor I've had so far! The effort he puts into the class is very apparent; he has office hours for six days of the week, is active on Ed, and responds to emails quickly. He may seem intimidating at first, but go to his office hours and you'll find that he's a super sweet and caring guy! Def recommend.
Hes my goat ifykyk. Hes helpful in office hours and is rly active on ED. Class actually made me learn and understand and everything felt very fair.
The absolute GOAT—nothing but the utmost respect for Prof Sharma. I didn't go to lecture and self studied (which is super doable btw) so I can't speak much on his lectures but he is unequivocally married to the game more than anyone I've ever seen. Most accessible prof ever and lit so understanding too i submitted literally everything so so late.
Sharma has to be one of the most lenient professors at Berkeley. The lectures are recorded, and attendance for lectures or discussions is optional. He lets us make up late homework and quizzes for full credit, and the exams are very straightforward, with good curves. He talks a bit slowly, though, I would recommend watching lectures on 1.4x speed.
The exams were super fair, and the review sheet was really helpful. There were plenty of office hours, and the professor was always helpful and truly cared about students. This class honestly healed my whole semester at Berkeley. An amazing professor!
Professor Sharma is the absolute goat. He's caring and incredibly helpful. The exams and quizzes were fair. The homework was 100% doable. Only giving out around 20ish problems each homework assignment. He posts practice exams which are incredibly helpful (albeit a bit challenging). Overall the best math class I've had here at Berkeley.
This man is an absolute GOAT. Replies quick to EdStems which makes it nice when you need help with HW or have questions about something. Midterms and finals are pretty reflective of the practice worksheet he gives before the tests. THIS MAN CARRYS THE MATH DEPARTMENT.
I never attended class but was diligent with keeping up with the textbook. Linear algebra is quite intuitive if you don't cram. Sharma was very responsive over email and clearly cares about his students. He even connected with me on Linkedin! I wish I attended his office hours but I never did. My favorite technical course I have taken so far!
He is a bad lecturer - he basically read straight from the textbook and at that point you might as well just read it. But he makes really fair and not too difficult tests and quizzes. He is super accommodating and places a good curve if it is needed.
Very fair professor. Lectures are ok, best if you already read the textbook before coming. Weekly quizzes vary in difficulty but overall ok. Midterms overall ok, curves them if they are too hard. The best thing about the class is the amount of resources he provides: study materials, responds instantly on ed/emails, even video guides. 100% recommend
One of the most caring professors, like he probably has the lowest Ed response time. Office hours wear also great, and I highly recommend going. Lectures weren't always helpful, but most were worth attending. Many helpful worksheets and resources to do well in the class.
Although his lectures are quite dense and hard to follow, he overall is incredibly organized and easily acecssible outside of class via email or Ed. You can tell he really puts in the effort and cares about his students.
Professor Sharma is a great professor. He responds to Ed messages with unimaginable speed and he has many office hours. He provides extensive review packets for the midterms and finals and also worksheets that cover more conceptual aspects of the week's material. All in all Math 54 with professor Sharma was an good experience.
Sharma was by far the most accessible professor I've had so far—especially considering the sheer size of the class—but his lectures are unbearable. You're better off using the textbook to learn linear algebra, and finding another way to learn differential eqs, since the textbook was no help. Very fair grading though, & a fat curve on exams.
This was my first math class at Berkeley, and it taught me how to learn math the right way and how learning the fundamentals of a concept helps actually learn it. Lectures were hard to follow, but reading the book and practice problems made up for it. Very fair grader, generous curve at the end. Very prompt w responding on Ed (within minutes)
I took him for Math 16A and Math 54 and honestly will say this is the most fair, amazing and caring professor ever. He is extremely generous with his grade bins and honestly lives on Ed. If you can, I would take him. He is super knowledgeable about math and a goated professor
Very accessible - never seen a professor with so many office hours & responds on ed in like 5 mins. Caring and wants students to succeed- my goat. Tbh not the best lecturer, but for 16A should be fine if you've taken calc before or learn with textbook. Flexible grading (test weight % shifting options) and test content is fair with partial credit.
Professor Sharma is so bad at lecturing that even if you read a topic and get some understanding on it, after going to lecture you'll be more confused. I had no idea what was going on most of the semester. I will say Sharma is super responsive online and very communicative, and gave a really good curves though.
Sharma's lectures were incredibly difficult to follow; my grade literally improved after I stopped attending and studied with YouTube videos. Sometimes came off rude in office hours. Brutal quizzes, but fair exams. I did appreciate his communication and data analysis w/ curving. Take him if you don't gaf about lecture.
Extremely accessible & helpful! If you are unsure about any of the course content or have follow up questions, Prof Sharma is always willing to help either in OH or EdStem. The tests were also also very fair and well balanced in terms of difficulty.
Always responds immediately to Ed questions and emails. Very long office hours, so very accessible during the day as well. Lectures are slow, in the sense that he is easy to understand and doesn't just launch information at you in painfully fast speeds. Very nice on grading, and seems very caring. Will be taking again for other math classes.
Very caring professor. Lectures can be hard to follow, and the exam review sheets aren't super helpful. Be prepared to do a lot of self-studying. Goodluck!
Professor Sharma cares so much about his students. While his lectures were somewhat hard to follow, You can tell he really wants us to succeed, he is incredibly responsive on Ed Discussion and is super helpful during office hours. Exams were fair. Prepare for weekly quizzes in discussion. Read the textbook. Go to office hours!!!
Goated professor!!!!!
He has so much aura as a professor. The most fat curve and very generous grader. Just be sure to know your content.
Awesome professor!
Honestly, great prof. He was extremely fair with his students, which is something you rarely see. His midterms were good and the final was not too shabby, and this is coming from someone who is not that good at math. I would take 54 with him again if I had to.
Poor, boring lectures. Amazing provision of resources. Office hours basically all day every day. Really lenient on late work (homework, quizzes, tests except for final). Very thorough explanations to all of his actions - curves, grade bins, etc. Always on Ed, answers every question. Most helpful + thorough professor, just didn't like his lectures.
Class was pretty standard for a math class. Material is hard and lectures don't really help. Reccommend utilizing office hours and your GSI. Really generous on curves and is always really fair. Practice reviews for midterms/finals were pretty helpful.
although u might not be able to tell he truly cares about his students but i just wish his lectures and his teaching style actually helped. strongly recommend seeing him OH as he is a lot more helpful there. the exams were not as bad as the hw and practices he gave us but i wish the daily hw and quizzes reflected the exams just a bit more
He will respond to your question on EdStem within five minutes in the middle of the night (does he sleep?). I was unable to concentrate in his lectures, so even though I went to class, I had to teach myself all the content via the textbook. The exams are quite difficult, but at least there's a curve.
I had him for both Math 1B and W54, and I received an A in both classes. He is a great and caring teacher, and I truly enjoyed his class. He gives a lot of supplemental material and responds to students' questions within minutes. His exams may be hard at times, but he prepares you well for them and compensates with good grade bin shifts.
Super responsive on Ed and receptive to feedback. I thought the exams were fair relative to other classes I've taken at Berkeley. I don't remember his lectures being very useful and good, but the exams seemed reflective of what we learned in the homework and the practice tests given
He's not a great lecturer, but the exams matched what we learned in homework and relatively easier than other math exams at Berkeley. Very responsive on ed and seems like a nice guy.
Fantastic and kind professor. I couldn't read the board and he literally changed the way he teaches in order to accomodate me. I have nothing but high praise for him.
He was a difficult professor. He was not approachable and asking him questions was intimidating. His questions are not as reflective of the homework as one would be led to believe. Overall, be prepared to rely on yourself to understand the material -- do not count on him to be supportive.
Very lenient and considerate for late work/missed quizzes
Lots of homework but very generous with making it up and making up quizzes as well.
Absolute wonderful of a professor, super lenient on homework, responds to Ed at 3am in the morning, and quizzes and homeworks are well practiced / well covered, bonus questions test conceptual topics which is completely reasonable
Arun Sharma is the kindest, most genuine professor I've had at Berkeley. I've never met a professor who cares so much about his students before. He is so accessible and reliable, and he's a gift and privilege to the students! Thank you Dr. Sharma, for the way you go above and beyond for students is so rare to find in professors of large classes.
Very solid professor. Provides infinite resources and responds to questions on Ed at ungodly hours, but can be a bit hard to follow his lectures sometimes. Very accessible outside of class and creates detailed review papers for exams. Very flexible with homework and wants you to succeed.
Professor Sharma is a great professor! He has plenty of office hours for help and responds to Edstem frequently (Even late at night). Homework load is reasonable and he curves exams if needed, providing review sheets and other resources to succeed. Lectures can be hard to follow, but he makes up for it in his dedication to help his students!
He is extremely approachable, and his lectures are often funny and engaging without him trying too hard. He heavily curved the class and was quite understanding of the average on exams.
Professor Sharma is a great professor. Perhaps, most notably through his sheer availability at the SLC or through ED. Some of his lectures were unhelpful/confusing, and I supplemented with the book. Midterms were surprisingly easy, on par with the difficulty of homework, if not easier. Sharma is also pretty funny and his reference sheet IS AMAZING.
Prof Sharma genuinely cares so much about his students. He explains things very thoroughly, and will always offer deeper explanations or answer any questions. Great teacher, helpful lecture notes, super easygoing and caring. best math teacher I've had.
He's a very nice professor -- hosts lots of OH, responds to EVERYTHING on ED. In general, his lecture style didn't work well for me, it wasn't very straightforward so I ended up self-teaching and learning everything myself. Very kind guy and will answer any questions you have though.
If you're new to a topic.. DON'T TAKE bad lecturer, tests each week on the homework, final review sheets are so exaggerated and feel more overwhelming than intended for review. But caring and WILL respond to you no matter what (even at midnight...) take if you don't care about lecture + familiar w/ topic
I loved Professor Sharma and Math 54. The homeworks were sometimes pretty hefty but not unmanageable, with a quiz every week relating to the hw. His lectures were always extremely helpful. The first midterm was easy but I felt like mt2 and the final were slightly more challenging than anticipated. I would highly recommend 54 with sharma!
the rumors are true, his lectures aren't great, but he clearly cares a lot about his job and his students and making sure we learn. always active on ed to answer questions, office hours multiple days a week, very focused on fairness, just an upstanding guy. i wish everyone in the world was like him
Goes thru lectures very fast, hard to keep up BUT records lectures so you can rewatch them. Super accessible and wants to help. Difficult to an extent but he tries to give you points on exams where he can so isn't too harsh of a grader. Good professor, and a makes little jokes sometimes. Also - I didn't get the textbook and was fine.
Lectures can be confusing at times. Very clear and fair on all of his policies, and tests are very doable.
very caring and generous professor. Explanation could be clearer during lectures. A very lenient grader. Has lots of announcements with careful explanations of things. Pretty heavy on the tests.
very understanding
He's such a caring professor. He's lectures aren't the best, but accessible outside of class, office hours, emails, and ed posts. Replies to every single ed post very quickly and explains with detail. I recommend going to office hours but if his lecture style isn't for you, you should read the textbook. Sharma's so goated you should totally take it
Prof Sharma is caring and willing to help students, via ed or OH. HOWEVER, his teaching style was not for me (lots and lots of writing & proof concepts) and his testing format which banked a lot of points on T/F was frustrating. The weekly quizzes helped with learning & preparing for tests, however the final was difficult and makes/breaks a grade.
The quizzes are much harder than midterm/final, really make sure you get a good GSI for this course. Class is graded fairly, curves applied when needed, and finals are pretty similar to past exams. Use the textbook, lectures aren't great, but other than that sharma is a great professor. Really study for quizzes, they can very easily tank grades.
Great Professor, cares so much about his class. Super fast response time.
