Easy professor. Its about indian music. The only way to get an A is go to the class, since she remembers the name and face..so if u dont go to the class u are not gettin an A. i think there are 2 quizzes and one final and one presentation. Exams are not that important..u have to do what she tells u to do in the class. go to class = A
as long as you go to the class and put in an effort and show to her that you are working hard to get the material then you will surely get an A.
She can't speak english all too well, and the most learning in her class was literally sitting there while she had students read chapters at a time out loud from the textbook. Supposed to be a strict attendance policy but I missed 7 classes and my grades were mediocre, but I still got an A. I think she grades by "effort," so look like you're trying
She is a very understanding professor. Pretend you are very concerned about the material and show that you really are making an effort for getting a decent grade. My grades weren't that good but i still ended up with an A-.
just doesnt teach and assigns work she never collects
she seems tough during the whole semesters teaching bur she will give so many opppurtunities to pull up ur grade and even after that if u feel u deserve a C+ or something, you will be shoocked to see an A- or A. she sees how hard you are trying.
Her tests are extremely difficult to pass. Almost everybody in class fails the exam but she does give a lot of opportunities to pull up your grade. There are also a lot of people that speak Urdu in her class and those people are at great advantage because they already have some background. I felt that I was at a disadvantage because I didnt.
shes nice n she TRIES to help but everything is STILL so unclear..she randomly assigns work, nothing difficult but just annoying. shes very unorganized. more than half the class fails the midterm n quizzes but go to class pretend u care make sure she noes ur name. do a little better on quizzes n test then the rest of the class and ur good! easy A!!
this class is very hard. huge report at end of class. don't recommend!
She is an amazing teacher and vocalist. She is very caring and tries her best to help you. Go to class, read the assigned work (which is not that much), and take some notes. You have to memorize many new words, but otherwise this class is not only simple, but enjoyable because of the teacher.
She's an amazing Hindi professor! Very sweet. She tries to make the class beneficial to student. Ask her to sing, shes amazing!!! You will celebrate Diwali and watch movies. As long as you try she'll give you a good grade. I learned a lot from this class. Don't be absent from her class if your enrolled. <3
The lessons have no structure. Assignments are random and not explained well. The only thing that makes this class worthwhile is her friendly personality. She is very nice and a light grader. If you look like you are trying the grade is yours. Just try to seem like you care. Hindi is a difficult language and she does not make it any easier.
She is a very good singer and appreciates singers and dedicated students. If you're a non-Indian student and you show Interest and dedication, you should get an A. By the end of the course, sing for extra credit. A good teacher for an easy A(if studied a little more than nothing) and a good class for killing DEC G. Good class after all.
I thought this class was going to be a joke, but I was wrong. You do have to study a lot, especially if you're not Indian. In fact, I almost hated her before the semester was about to end. I got a 34 on the midterm, and who knows how I did on the final. BUT the weird thing is, she gave me a B+. I surely deserved a D. So it's strange...?
Prof. Sharma is a really nice person. Make sure that you attend class regularly and bring the textbook with you. I won't say that this is a really easy course, but if you do all the readings, the assignments and attend the lecture--you should be good to go. Her exams are not that bad you need to read the textbook and take good notes
Shes a beautfiful singer and is interested that you understand. You can fail everything and pass the course. Bad: I dont think she writes grades down just give u grades based on ur interest in the course. Alot of reading, attendance mandatory, she very unorganized will make u memeorize sumthin 5min before the test.Shes nice tho, just look interested
This class has alot of reading, and alot of memorizing Hindu words. As a non-indian it really wasnt that bad, class usually ended early in the summer. I did bad on the quiz and midterm, i did well on the final. If you show true interest, and come everyday you'll be fine. I thought i was gonna get a c+/b- and i got an A!
She is a nice person but it is difficult to understand her. Don't miss the class, read the textbook, couple of quizzes, midterm, and final. Tests are m/c and fill in. If you show her your interest(even if u dont want to) then you'll do just fine. Overall, not hard if you do what's required.
I took HIN 111 and now taking HIN 112 with her. She is really useless and does not teach at all. She doesn't like chalk so she doesn't write anything. If you're Indian good luck bc she'll think you should know Hindi bc your brown. Not helpful Wants TA to do all the work while she sits around and says how the class isn't doing well. Its your fault!
AWESOME!
She is a horrible teacher. If you're not Indian and even show her a little bit of interest you should be getting at least a B+. However if you even look Indian you will have to work your butt off, suck up to her like no other and just hope for the best.
The worst language professor ever. You won't learn a single thing. The class has no structure, but somehow you find yourself doing useless exercises by yourself during class and SINGING. "You'll get an A if you make efforts"! She plays favorites so be careful.
The class was supposed to be about the music of Bollywood & she started teaching us music theory. She expected us to be able to hear and recognize notes and sing them back to her, which is not what the class was about at all! And she just expects you to memorize stuff, you don't actually LEARN anything. Don't ever take a class with her.
Class was all about participation. She liked to read out loud from the book, and do a lot of singing exercises. Yes, singing. The class was a little hard as far as the material, HOWEVER, she hardly grades based on actual numbers. If she likes you and you show a lot of interest and she knows your name, you're golden. Just act like you love it.
She's great! i had fun in that class although i didnt like that she put ppl on the spot and singled them out.her gradings easy, just read the book and do the assignments. easy A. really.
Class is very easy! Just go to class and show that you are very interested. Participate in class and she will love you!
she is very nice, help students a lot.But she needs you go office hour.Always give you chance for make up exam.
I really really like her!!! Kindness lady!!!!!!!
This is not an "easy A" if you are not already familiar with the Hindi language. It's not the hardest A either. She's a nice lady and she doesn't make you sing if you don't want to. Even though you get low percentages they equate to decent grades. Very boring class. Don't take it if you're not 100% interested. TA was amazing though. Not an easy A
I took this winter session, its really true that as long as you act super interested you will do well. It isn't the easiest class, but she does care about students. Not much homework. Textbook is necessary! There is a lot of hindi memorization and it seems impossible but if you study you can do it.
She is a sweetheart. Take the class
Class was a drag at first but I ended up liking it. She's very nice and cares a lot about her students. Granted, I did well in the class because of the TA. Yaruq hassan was an amazing TA.
Though a language can be difficult to learn at first, through continued practice one can master it. This professor is fair as well as helpful when it comes to teaching Hindi. Like the previous comments before, she does care about the students. If you want to learn a language, and want a good professor, take this class.
The class isn't that bad and she is nice but if you're not good a pitch perception and figuring out beats and stuff then it'll probably be hard for you. Otherwise, the class wasn't that bad there wasn't much work to do outside of class.
She is amazing. Classes are fun since she will show the videos and make us listen to music. AAS 110 is not so easy bUT no tough either. It doesn't really matter If you know hindi or know anything about music. She is ready to help.
Professor Sharma is one of the best professors i've ever had. She cares for her students so much. She is a sweetheart and the most kind hearted women. She will care about you if you care about her class. Class is pretty simple. she goes over things as much as you want and pretty much tells you what will be on the test. Totally recommend her !
She doesn't teach anything at all. Will just come, write a few words and just randomly talk about each person. She has her favorites and is partial to them.
I took her class over the summer, she is one of the best professor I had at stony brook, as long as you pay attention in class and do all the works that she assigns you will definitely get an A in class
I should have never taken this professor, terrible at getting back to you.
Get involved with this course! This is a great chance to learn about another culture! I poured my heart into this course and I had no background in Indian music, but now I can walk away feeling so enriched! Even if you put a little effort into this class, it will go a long way! All you have to do is try your best! :)I love you Dr. Sharma!:)))))))
She's amazingg!!
I took this class in Spring 2017. This class teaches about Indian music. She is a nice professor, she seems like a nice lady. However, she has no idea how to teach. She teaches in a disorganized fashion, just writing random things on the board and she expects you to know everything. However, she curves the tests, so you should be fine.
Professor Aruna is an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students. She is willing to help whenever needed. If you show initiative and try, you will get an A.
The TA gives you your grade, so even if you weren't the best student you probably got an A-
this class was very awkward. the whole environment felt like an elementary school class in the sense that attendance was ALWAYS mandatory. The TA's will help you pass the class. Overall she was knowledgeable about the class, but I don't think she realized that her students were not as experienced. It felt like there should've been a pre-requisite.
If you attend class, participate, and show effort, it is an easy A. Dr. Sharma is very kind and gives very fair quizzes/exams.
Personally, I think she was a great professor. She made each class very interesting. Most importantly, it is evident that she really cares about her students.
Taking this class online was difficult and I feel like if it was in person It wouldn't have been as bad. The TAs help a lot and be sure to attend their office hours before the midterm and final because you get the most information (in an organized manner) from them! She makes you do a presentation at the end of the semester but it isn't that bad.
Professor Sharma is a great professor/singer and knows how to teach Indian music well. She is very old schooled, so make sure you're never late to class and that you participate. The TAs send a review sheet for every written test, so those are easy As. The listening portion may seem difficult at first, but professor Sharma will drill them into you.
Dr. Sharma is very strict and wants full participation in class based on textbook readings. However, the TAs Talika and Angela gave out a review sheet that will save you for quizzes. So as long as you study the review sheet, you'll be fine. Also, if you're friends with the TAs, they give you helpful hints about the test questions.
Even though you might feel that this class is easy to pass IT ISN'T. ONLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOUR FRIEND IS YOUR TA.
Wouldnt recommend this class. She is super strict for those who dont have fluency in Hindi.
This is the worst class I've ever had.terribleā¦
She is very judgmental to those who dont have have background in indian music. All she does is sit in chair and talk with indian students about india and all that for straight 30 mins. Only take this class if you r indian
Physcopath
Awful and sleep in class
Run!!!
very fun class and provides a great learning experience. also the TA is GOATED Best GPA booster
This primary school course is the most beneficial for SBC: LANG, GLO, and HUM. This course will teach you how to read and write Hindi and it has a diverse student body, which makes it simpler to form Network. Easy A in a renowned class to boost GPA. If I had the chance, I would re-enroll in this course.
The has to be one of my favorite classes, as the class has a small number of students and the professor pays immediate and immense attention to her students. The professor's passion for the class and subject are unparalleled and you can't help but pay attention in this class. I would recommend taking this class as it helps your SBCs and GPA.
Good professor. Makes it clear what u need to do in class. Very few homeworks. Overall an easy class. Attendance matters a lot.
Professor is GOATed and gives Indian food, she is a very sweet lady that will talk to you as a parent, I honestly love the professor and this is my favorite class this semester!
This course covers both GLO and Language. Great GPA booster. Just come to class discuss and thats about it. Pretty easy and fun.
Professor Sharma is an incredible teacher with in-depth knowledge of the Hindi language and music. It is a GPA booster. Fulfills about 3 SBCs. Easy class overall.
Worst class of my life, this class is a nightmare, the professor tells people that it's an easy A but trust me, it is not, she is very partial and won't care for you if you aren't from India.
Those who rate her five should go to hell. Stop misguiding people.
do take this course
AAS 110 is the worst class to take. The TAs make fun of people that do bad and the professor is literally in a different world half the time. If your not Indian have fun failing. And if you are Indian be expected to know the entirety of Indian classical music at the start of class. The amount of memorization of literally random stuff is insanity.
The easiest class I have ever taken in Stony Brook. Thoroughly enjoyed this class throughout the semester. Not a lot of homeworks, grade relies on tests and participation within class.
Very easy class to take, very less homework and also just interact in class, professor is very caring
Aruna Sharma barely "teaches" AAS 110, the entirety of the class is run by her TA's (who are very helpful and good at teaching). The issue comes when she decides to put topics/units on her tests never discusssed before and expect us to know it because "it was in the textbook". Be prepared to memorize heavy topics in Indian classical music
don't take her
The class itself has potential, if it was taught by anyone else. The TA's do most of the teaching and are constantly ridiculed by the professor. Be prepared to become frustrated with the course material as you realize the mandatory lectures are futile. This class IS NOT one to take for an easy A, so please don't be misguided. You have been warned.
If you have no prior knowledge of Indian music or speak Hindi, your grade is in your TA's hands. Just take another class to fulfill your SBC. Also, she makes you buy a textbook you barely use that SHE wrote.
horrible pacing of classes
Prof. Sharma is a very easy grader. She has a midterm and a final. She has one or two quiz. Participation always matters. Overall she is awesome. I would recommend take her in HIN111 course.
The class is extremely disorganized and it is hard to learn but thats mostly because the majority of the students have a strong background or are already fluent in Hindi. She really wants everyone to do well and she's very good at explaining grammatical concepts but the class is just very slow
She needs to stop teaching this course. The course itself has a lot of potential but she ruins it. Doesn't teach and complains when we don't know stuff. Wouldn't recommend her unless you learn on your own.
Awesome professor, I would love to take her again later. She is caring, very easy grader, Participation mattered most in her class, If you participate you can get A or A-, that is guarantee
Didn't teach class and relied on ta's to teach. DON'T take the class
Don't take it if you're not ready to read outside and teach yourself most of it. She will often teach certain things on the slides, and then the tests/quizzes can have a lot of questions on things you barely cover, and then have barely anything on the main parts. TAS teaches for her, and she needs a mic. She's nice, but someone else needs to teach
She doesn't actually teach the class it is just the TA's, the time she does decide to speak is just interrupting the TA and talking for a long time super fast that it doesn't even make sense, she expects us to have perfect pronunciation in Hindi
Don't take this class if you are not of the ethnicity, the accent, and the familiarity of Indian music will cause you to spend way too much time studying out of class. All quizzes are short-answer; the TAS teach for her, and this class will definitely get in the way of your major-related courses. Take anything else for a Pre-Req if possible
