Arvin is mostly knowledgeable in the Statics field, but he's not a statics professor. He often gets stuck on homework problems when we ask questions. 9.5/10 would recommend trying to get a different professor
Dr. Farid knows statics. Dr. Farid cannot teach statics. Very set in his way of teaching, and blames students for not understanding problems for lack of reading. Homework is needlessly difficult and does not well reflect the material learned in class. DO NOT take statics from Dr. Farid.
Dr. Farid has experience and knows statics, he however cannot teach it. He tends to point out students who have problems or ask questions and the homework in no way reflects the test. The first test of the class had an average of 53% ... my lesson from this class is civil engineers are insane or I am unlucky.
You can tell he understands the material, but he does not know how to teach. Homework is much harder than anything we covered in class and his exams are even harder. I've learned more from searching online than I have from him. He often spends the whole class time doing one problem without really explaining what he is doing. Avoid him if possible.
Likes to hear his own voice when teaching. Homework is off pace with lecture and tests. Wants to see the best students get ahead, rather than bring the entire class along. He definitely knows statics, but he does not know how to get you to know it. Most disappointing class at BSU to date. He even took off a week towards the beginning of class!
His lectures consist of him reading from a PowerPoint, getting halfway through the example then changing variables, make students do calculations for him, gets lost in his own work, doesn't explain what he is doing. At the end if his example ouputs weird numbers, he tells the class to fix it on our own time. On the first exam the average was 49.93%
He understands statics, but cannot teach the material. The way he lectures is confusing and unorganized. He gets frustrated with the class if we don't understand what he is doing. He quickly goes through some examples, but doesn't really explain how to do the problem. I have learned more from google. The homework is harder than anything in class.
I would've given Farid a 2 if he didn't show some support when you asked him questions. Overall he moves through material very fast in what is already a challenging course. Although I thought his tests were fair, I have heard much better things about other statics professors at Boise State and would recommend looking to get one of them first.
In every case, if you have a question, he makes you go to the board to work it out in front of the whole class. When he finishes a topic and asks the class if they understand, any dissenters are put on the spot so he can figure out why. Instead of increasing our understanding, his method tends to make people say they understand, when they don't.
Hardest class I have taken at Boise State to date, and not because of the material. Tests and homework will be only a couple questions but extremely difficult. He had to curve final grades in the class because so many people failed. He gives extra credit for pointless stuff like talents instead of actually helping people get good grades be learning
If you have a question he will repeat what he said but only louder. If the entire class does not say they understand he will not move on. The class itself is not a hard one and you can learn the material just by looking at the powerpoint.
Tough professor, but very smart and knows what he is doing
Arvin Farid is a very stylish and busy guy. He wants you to succeed and will pass you but you won't learn a lot of practical stuff unfortunately. He is a genius and does know what he is talking about though.
DR Arvin Farid is the best professor at BSU CE department. His lectures were amazing exams were last little bit tricky but attend the class and do class examples and homework and you will pass
He is one of the best professors in BUS. You have to go to his class in order to pass. He gives a lot of extra credits that will help you.
He explains things pretty good so the hard things will look easy even when they are not. Make sure you understand the over all picture (the concept) not how to do the problem or the tests going to be so hard for you. He is the best professor I have ever taken a class with.
Really great professor. He explains the concepts well and always tries his best to answer any questions you may have.
Great professor. He knows his stuff, just make sure to ask specific questions when you do not understand. His exams are fair, but must come to class and do examples and homework to do well.
Topic is hard, but the teacher teaches the topic well.
Dr. Farid is a great professor with a ton of knowledge around the topic. The lectures can be very extensive at times with not a lot of interaction. He is very understanding and is always willing to make changes with due dates and exam dates to help everyone out.
Arvin is a great guy and definitely knows his stuff. It's easy to fall asleep in his class because he lectures a lot of the time. He gets too caught up in specifics in the lectures which led our class to be very rushed in the end, so I would say pacing is one area for improvement. He is reasonable and fair about homework and tests.
I took this for CE 360, Soil Mechanics. Arvin really knows his stuff and is a great professor. If you have questions, ask them and he'll answer them. He is also flexible if the whole class is struggling with a topic or due date of homework assignments. I would take Dr. Farid for almost any class.
He's a good professor when teaching subjects he knows. Topics on tests aren't always the same as what is covered in the homework, so study slides and in-class examples.
Excellent teaching skills, intelligent, and always answers your questions.
Even the Material is hard but he explains them well.
Very nice professor, and explains the material very well.
Great Professor, class moves very quickly.
Really good lecturer and is really good at explaining topics, but does move quickly through the material. If you catch him in his office he is very willing to answer your questions. Scheduling of homework got messed up and we had three assignments due dead week.
Great class. Very rushed at the end.
Tests make up 80% of your grade. Final was obscure and difficult. He does care about his students learning, but he's not in tune with his students and their needs.
Dr. Farid is the bomb dot com. If you study hard you will do well. He is great at answering student questions during class and outside of class. He truly cares. He paced our class slower this spring so students understand better, this was very helpful. He changes hw and test dates to help student preparation, he is very student centered.
Dr. Farid is an excellent lecturer. He clearly knows the material and is willing to go over things again if they are not understood the first time. The tests will make you think but are manageable if you understand the material.
The textbook that is used is not written like a traditional textbook, it's easier and more interesting to read and understand, far less of a grind. The assignments are short conceptual essays. Grading is weighed more on attendance, participation, and the semester presentation. Arvin is engaging in class discussions and lectures. Course was fun.
he is a really amazing professor he cares about understanding the material so if you show him that you are trying he will pass you
The best ever
Really great professor.
Very great professor but his test was a little hard.
Lectures are great, because he can make up examples on the spot and work through them to help develop a greater understanding. Bottom line he's one of the few that cares, cares about you and your learning.
Good Teacher. Mostly just watch videos.
Good Teacher. Lots of videos.
Dr. Farid is the smartest professor I've ever met and would take more classes from him if it was possible. CE 460 is a hard class, if you do homework in the last minute you won't learn very much. You have to be on top of things to fully understand it.
Lectures feel like drinking from a fire hose with all the information. But still a good course and good prof.
Dr Farid is a fantastic professor always challenging you how to look at a situation. He makes you think beyond the first response.
This was a pretty easy course. Do a presentation, take a final, do some readings and homework, and show up to class. Prof. Farid is clearly very knowledgeable of the subject matter and fostered good class discussions. My complaints are more about the course than the professor, as this class was mostly movie time. Bring your popcorn.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgable and always eager to answer questions. He made students feel comfortable to ask questions both in class and in his office. Homework and Exams were fair. He tries to cover too much information in class and students end up feeling overwhelmed. His powerpoint slides are so packed with information that it is hard to learn.
It's an interesting class and the professor seems to know a lot about the topic, I really enjoyed the videos that I watched during class, just the mini-lectures is where I was lost most of the time I haven't covered the math that was explained such as statics.
Dr. Farid is a very great professor and does a great job explaining concepts. He is sure to not move on until all the students understand the material.
Overall he was a very good professor. Classes mostly consisted of infrastructure videos that were actually interesting a full of good information. Professor Farid is a very confident speaker so make sure to give presentations your all. Only negative I have about the class is that I never received any responses to my emails to the professor.
Great professor overall. Always willing to help students and work with them.
He is a great professor. very Knowledgeable.
Professor Farid is a pretty funny teacher, not too difficult but overall caring and respectable. Knows a lot of information in his discipline. Over explains some questions though. Overall great teacher.
The class is a introductory course not covering very many conceptual aspects of CE. We discussed some concepts, but the majority of our conversations were introducing us to the different disciplines of engineering.
He is not a difficult teacher, very knowledgeable about the material, video heavy.
Although we watched mostly videos during class, when he would explain and answer student questions he knew the material very well.
Strong knowledge of the subject. He covers everything you need to know for the tests during the lecture. Be prepared to sit through a long lecture.
Overall I respect Dr. Farid quite a bit. His lectures are dense but he explains things well and is reasonable with his homework assignments. The class in itself is hard but if you pay attention and reach out to Arvin when you need help you can pass with ease.
Very knowledgeable when it comes to soils. Lectures are sometimes hard to follow. The worked in-class examples could be way better.
Professor Farid is a good person. He is the type of professor that steps into the students shoes and does whats best for the majority of the class. Overall He is very helpful. His grading is not bad at all. He understands this is a design class and knows we as students make mistakes but he understands and doesnt kill you on the grading. READ BOOK.
This class was difficult because of a few things. First, it only has 2 exams which, I think, is not fair since a bad grade in one of the exams can burn you down. Second, the lectures are not very helpful. All his lectures were more like a conference presentation than a lecture. I learned more from the book.
It was a new class and at the beginning of the semester he struggled with zoom. There wasn't a lot of homework but I think more homework would have been better prep for the test. There was only one test which was a week-long take home test. Hardest test of my life! But the final was a group presentation on a remediation technique.
Professor Farid knows the material well and can communicate the information clearly most of the time. Anyone can ask questions in class about the material beyond what we cover in the class and can expect to hear a solid answer from him. He is usually quick to respond to questions via email, but sometimes doesn't answer the actual question.
This class is offered for undergrad or graduate, Geoenvironmental Engineering. Dr. Farid absolutely knows what he's talking about and is a great professor for the class but it should be known that the class is extremely difficult. Heavy lecture, lots and lots of information, difficult to process. The exam was over the top and unrealistically hard.
Covers every different scenario with all the different questions possible. This makes the class lecture heavy, equation/PowerPoint heavy. Exams were fair, homework was extensive and could not be done in one day.
Arvin definitely cares about making sure students understand the material. His slideshows summarize fairly well the important topics that will be covered on tests and homework. The PowerPoints and can be a little wordy but if you refer to the textbook theyre really helpful in guiding you. He was also flexible with whats happening with covid.
Dr. Farid is an excellent professor and is very caring towards his students. He truly wants everyone to understand the material. Sometime he moves a bit fast through his lectures and examples, so if you are not paying attention you can get lost pretty quickly. Exams are very difficult but graded fairly. Only 2 exams and 8 homework assignments.
This special topics class was geoenvironmental engineering. It was the first time it had been taught so we were the guinea pigs, but overall I enjoyed this class. Homework was minimal and a really great gauge of learning. Only 1 take home exam that was extremely challenging, but we had a whole week to do it. Arvin is caring and very knowledgeable!
Was an ok semester given that everything is crazy with covid going on.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgeable about soils and geotechnical engineering. His exams and assignments are pretty tough, but if you work hard in his class, you will do well.
Dr. Farid is one of my favorite professors. He is very knowledgeable about the material he is teaching, and genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. However, you MUST put the work in to achieve success. He has high, but reasonable expectations. If you put in the effort and seek out help when needed, you will be fine!
Dr. Farid is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about the subject & is able to teach the material clearly. However, if a student doesn't understand, he will work with student until they understand it. Also, be prepared to work for your grade as well as participate in class. He genuinely cares about his students & wants them all to succeed.
Dr. Farid is a great professor & is knowledgeable about this subject. This course was a bit more lecture heavy than his other course, but be prepared to participate, work and learn some material on your own. He is willing to help his students when they have questions & responds quickly. He has high expectations, but they're completely attainable.
The homework for this class often made no sense and didn't seem to match what we would learn in class. The material was very dense and I struggled through it. The exam was also brutal, covering material we never discussed.
Prof. Farid is an expert in his field and can answer any question you have. Lectures are long and often go over time. There's not a lot of homework but the assignments are pretty long.
Good lecturer. Answers questions well/ makes sure class is on track. Offers extra credit and test makeup when necessary. Worked out problems can be hard to read sometimes. Class gets progressively harder so pay attention.
Professor Farid provided good examples during class with good discussion amongst the class to make sure all understand the material. He does expect a lot from you as a student. Tests aren't exactly like the homework, but he does teach so one has the tools to complete the tests.
Dr. Farid is a great lecturer and always comes prepared to teach the class. The example problems and discussions in class are useful to understand the material. There are not a lot of homework assignments but they can be lengthy at times. Exams aren't like the homework assignments, but as stated in previous reviews you have the tools needed.
Arvin Farid is very experienced in this field of engineering, but he also expects you to be at times. He grades fairly, but you have to put the work in to earn a decent grade. He wants his students to succeed, which is the important part. You'll have to do the reading and do practice problems if you want to get a good grade in this course.
Dr. Farid is one of the best professors in the civil engineering department. His assignments and exams are challenging, but he makes sure that students understand the concepts during his lectures.
Professor Farid's teaching strategies are very engaging to everyone in the class. He is constantly checking up on students to make sure they understand the material. He responds quickly to emails and was available outside of class times.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgeable about the material he discusses in class, he is very good at answering any question you may have, he is always very prepared for class, and offerers extra credit points multiple times throughout the semester. The homework and exam problems are much more challenging than what we do in class. Tough class for sure.
Great instructor, he is very knowledgeable. Homework and exams are challenging and doesnt always follow what was covered in class. Make sure to go to class and follow along with the examples.
Tests and homework are difficult but not unachievable. Attend class and ask. questions and you will pass.
He is very knowledgeable in the classes he teaches, this was my second class with him and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher. The lectures seem long but are very supplemental to your learning of the topics.
He is lecture heavy but good in class examples. If you have questions, just ask him and he answers them well.
Dr. Farid is a great professor, the course is difficult. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Challenging course, but he explains things clearly making a difficult topic more accessible. Tests can be especially challenging as he does not provide a practice test or study guide. Homework is also challenging so work with classmates and ask questions. He has good communication. Reviewing homework and in class examples helped me on tests.
Professor Farid's lectures are very informational, so make sure you pay attention in class. He will also randomly call on you sometimes, so make sure you do follow along with him in class! He is really intelligent and knows a lot about the subject, and he really tried to get to know everyone's names, which was nice. Tests and homework are tough!
Very good teacher. This is a tough class and he taught it very well. Don't skip class or you won't know what's going on.
Arvin is pretty cool. I think it would be hard to pass this class if you did not attend lecture. Soils is not an easy subject, but he really fosters a learning environment. Do not be afraid to ask questions in class as he will walk you through the steps and check up on you to make sure you understand. He really wants you to learn.
Overall one of the tougher classes but he is well versed in the information. Make sure to go to every class as the concepts can be very difficult to grasp.
He will stop the entire class if even just one student is confused. He is very caring and passionate about the subject will helps motivate you. Class gets very hard towards the end as the lectures become a little more scrambled than the beginning.
Professor Farid, thank you for your ambitious attitude in regards to getting students to engage with the class and other peers. It has been a challenging year yet you made it enjoyable to come to class. You were always very prepared for lecture and eager to help students understand the material. Hope to see you around soon!
I really enjoyed my class with Professor Farid. He is good at relating to students and he really cares about the student's learning. He frequently checks in to see how the class is understanding the material and he is willing to slow down in order to help a student understand. He is a fair grader as well.
Lecture is very heavy and must pay attention in order to soak up as much information as possible. Arvin is hard to understand and his writing is often chicken scratch but he is an awesome professor and lecturer. Very much so enjoyed CE360!!
He is a decent enough teacher. Not much else to say. Tests can be hard but study and you can do fine with makeups.
Great professor and I would definitely consider taking another class with him. do the homework and attend the class and promise you will do fine in the class.
He had a very proactive approach that focused on participation and homework/exams.
Dr. Farid genuinely likes teaching. I appreciate that trait. He seems to have the student's best interest in mind. His tests are really hard.
Professor Farid is knowledable and does answer questions in class or office hours. However, participation between classmates is a tremendous aspect of his classes. I stress that the exams do get harder as the course progresses. There has been some forgiveness but not much. Do not slack in this class and do set up a study group as soon as possible.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgeable in the topics he covers. The concepts that are covered in class also need to be read about in the book to get a full understanding of the topic.
Great Professor, Tests were much more difficult than homework
Great professor, Homework was consistent but if you take notes well you wont have any problems. Leaves you out to guess on what's going to be on tests. Will answer pretty much any question so if you are confused make sure to ask.
Arvin is a great professor who focuses on studying the subject and trying to find a way for his students to apply it to the labs.
He really cares whether the students are understanding the material being taught. Homework helped to solidify what he would teach. He tries his best to make the material easy to understand.
Arvin is very knowledgeable and willing to help if youre brave enough to ask questions. He can be intimidating but cares a lot. Youll be asked questions in class directly. Tests and homeworks are hard but if you go to class and stay focused the whole time, a B is the most likely grade.
Really tough class but I dont blame professor farid. the tests were harder than hw or class examples, however
Very fun class, Arvin made the best of it and made sure all of his students understood the course content. Has great jokes as well.
Dr. Farid is a very knowledgeable professor who gives you the time and answers you need to succeed in his class. MATLAB was not my forte but the in-class time helped develop my skills. 3 hour lectures during dinner time though? Not ideal.
really cool class
He knows what he is talking about but tends to lecture a lot. He is willing to answer questions and work with students but has a tendency to mis-interpret the question which can make his answers very confusing so you have to really pay attention.
I would say Dr. Fraid is a good instructor. Though CE 502 was three hour-long class it was not boring at all. He made the class interactive. He cares whether the students understand his lectures or not. Depending on the student's background he gives special attention.
Overall, Dr. Farid is a good professor who really understands the material and wants to make sure you do too. He will take time for your questions. He is accessible outside of class and open to student feedback (if we want to postpone a deadline, etc.). However, he can be pretty intimidating and sometimes his assignment criteria are not clear.
Great professor overall! His enthusiasm for certain topics is contagious. The class has a lot of difficult material, but he is very helpful at walking through the material and make sure it it is solidified. Sometimes the material can be a bit dense and the class time period makes it hard to stay focused. Overall, good!
Extremely complicated class. Dr. Farid is extremely intelligent and very in tune with what he is doing, even if it does get chaotic and not always as efficient as it could be. Very dependent on going to class and relies heavily on working outside of class.
Tough class, but knows matlab very well. Having a good understanding of matlab before taking this class will help.
Tough class
Make sure you know how to code
Lectures are long but interesting. His PowerPoint slides are kind of hard to follow. He always updates his PowerPoint slides as he teaches, but forgets to upload the updated slides for student access. Overall, I am happy with the course and his teaching style.
Dr. Farid's class is very difficult and he expects a lot from his student. His lectures are often hard to follow too. While his class is very difficult I will say that he fosters a great learning environment. He will stop and help anyone who admits that they don't understand what's going on and he is always willing to set up a time to meet.
Criteria for assignments are not the most clear. The professor is well versed and passionate about the topics he teaches.
Arvin is a fun professor with a traditional grading style. He is energetic and excited to teach his classes. He is a tough grader but rewards students who participate and explain their thinking.
Great with questions
Lecture heavy class but content was easily accessible and professor was lenient on grades.
Arvin is a good teacher who knows a lot about the topics he teaches, it can get confusing at times when the variables he uses don't align with the books. If you are able to stay engaged in class and take good notes you shouldn't have trouble. The topics he teaches are challenging so try not to miss class or you may fall behind on the concepts.
The lesson was lecture-heavy, but the most of the topic was interesting. Prof. Arvin was excellent at answering queries and was flexible if you needed extra time to get the assignment done.
There are long lectures in this course that contain a lot of information. Attendance is important for success in this course because a lot of assignment/exam/project updates are mentioned only in class.
He is very knowledgeable about geoenvironmental engineering, but he doesn't always explain things the best and the examples could be confusing because he never showed us the process and just expected us to know what to do with the equations.
Very lecture heavy
It's clear no matter what class you take with Dr. Farid that he is very intelligent and has extensive knowledge on class topics, however lectures are very fast paced and cover difficult topics. He's a hard grader and expects a lot from his students. Refers to MATLab a lot, so try to be familiar with the software if you are going to take this class.
I have had Dr. Farid for 4 classes and it is very easy to tell that he is not at the University to teach. It seems that he created his lecture slides, homework, and exams years ago and just reuses the material. He cares solely about his research and will take every chance to boast about it. He loves to talk about himself, so just smile and wave.
In Geo-environmental engineering, I did great on every homework but got a bad grade on the only test we took. I am struggling to pass now. Class is fair and enjoyable but I just hope I pass.
I have had Dr. Farid 3 times now. Every time the class is almost over I am scared for my grade but it always turns out! He knows very well what he teaches, meaning he is a great question answer-er. Professor Farid is from the middle east, but is still very easily understood which I cannot say for other professors. Overall solid!
Professor Farid delivered the course material at a high level of complexity but at an efficient pace. He was very knowledgeable but the exams/homework were sometimes too high of complexity for understanding.
Long lectures with a total of 10 assignments, long class but fair grader.
Very knowledgeable, has real-world experience that allows him to clearly explain material.
He is a very smart and very fast teacher. Equation heavy class with long homework. Make sure to show up to class.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgable and has a good sense of humor. The course material is very deep and intensive, but if you participate in class things will work out.
Dr. Farid is very knowledgeable on the topics discussed in class. If you have questions he will answer and try to explain until you understand. The amount of HW is reasonable.
He is a great professor, knowledgeable, always ready to help students with any questions that they have. Positive, welcoming and understanding. He makes sure each student in class understand everything being taught.
Uses the entire lecture time, but is very knowledgeable on the subject. Works through problems together as a class and is very big on class participation. Difficult class, but if you stay on top of the work, is a great class.
He gives great lectures and seriously cares whether we get the ideas!
His lectures are full of information but he does a good job of pointing out the important details. We also solved lots of problems as a class which was very helpful for understanding the homework. Overall, I had a great experience taking his class.
He is a great knowledgeable professor. He has a positive welcoming vibe and goes through the course contents very smoothly. He is always ready to help students with any questions they may have about the subject and is very positive and welcoming.
Professor Farid is extremely smart and prepared for the class. Understanding the lectures are very important to the overall ability of the student to learn. Therefore, asking questions about the material will help a lot in this class.
Farid is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about teaching us about geotechnical design and it shows in his lecture. He really wants you to understand the class and do well. Homework's are really long but there is one every other week
He wants his students to understand the concepts he is teaching. He does a good job explaining concepts and problems, as you can tell he has extensive knowledge on what he is teaching. The homework is a little heavy, but the grading isn't too strict.
Farid is very knowledgeable in the content he teaches. He is always willing to answer questions and answers them in great detail. He goes over many in-class examples which is helpful in understanding the content. The homework assignments are very long but he gives two weeks to complete them. Overall great professor.
Dr. Farid is an amazing professor that really knows his information. His lectures go really fast though and it is hard to keep up sometimes. Homework is hard but he grades it very generously and that goes for exams also.
Dr. Farid is a great professor. He is super funny and very knowledgeable of the topics he teaches about and goes very in depth into the subject. His tests are challenging, but he will also work with you to understand the topic and work on a lot of examples.
Dr. Farid is a good professor. His classes are tough but he is always willing to help during and outside of class. He is very respected and I have had nothing but good experience with him through my time at BSU. His classes are tough and lecture heavy, but his classes are very important and useful when going into the workforce after graduation.
Farid is very passionate about what he teaches. He does his best to make sure his class is understanding and participating in class. Attendance is very important to staying caught up in the class.
Arvin is incredibly knowledgeable and articulate in the subject matter. Homework assignments are incredibly lengthy and can be a drag if you don't start them significantly ahead of time.
Very tough course with lots of material but Arvin is very knowledgeable in the the course material. Ask for help in class and he will do his best to explain it to you.
knowledgeable but fast paced
Very fast-paced, too much homework. Too much material covered and a lot of information that was not useful to the understanding of the concepts of the course.
I remember I said I hope this would be the last class I would take on the first day. I was scared on programming, Arvin actually made it fun, and enjoyable. I have gotten an A without really knowing, as the assignments were really cool to do. I have ended programming a calculator to caluclate your EBAY ETA profit. Iloved the course!!!1
Dr. Farid is very knowledgeable and communicates this knowledge well. His courses allow a lot of student responsibility but he is also good about walking through difficult concepts. One of those professors that some may not prefer because the independent style can be challenging but very rewarding. I recommend taking a class with him.
His expertise is unmatched! You will leave his class confident is your understanding!
He is tough teacher in the classroom but if you need extra help and he sees that you are trying you will receive a decent grade
Dr. Farid is extremely knowledgeable in the field of geotechnical engineering. I enjoyed his geotechnical engineering design course. The lectures were intense but there is a lot of information that we have to get through to have a baseline knowledge of foundations. I would take this course again.
Very knowledgable professor who wants everyone to understand the material. I feel like too much material was covered in this class and lectures were very fast paced.
Very knowledgeable in his field and is willing to help you succeed. The class was slightly difficult because it was fast paced with a lot of material. However, I think his explanations really help solidify the concepts for me. He does highly value participation so be prepared to get involved in class.
Farid cares about his students and wants them to learn but lectures were long and very content-heavy, hard to stay engaged for the full 3-hour lecture. He covered A LOT in this course.
Dr. Farid gave lectures which included in-depth, in-class examples. These examples both helped clear up any confusion about the theory being discussed, as well as gave practical experience to prepare for the exams. Overall, he gives his students a strong enough understanding about the topic to adapt to anything the exams could throw at them.
He does in class examples, and will stop class to make sure everyone understands.
Arvin is very good at teaching the topics needed to be covered over a limited amount of time. Some of the course material is very detailed and at times confusing, but the in class participation and in class examples really helped clarify things that could have given me trouble. I think he is a great professor!
Professor Farid is probably the most intelligent and enthusiastic civil engineering professor I've had at Boise State. He is extremely knowledgeable and has had industry experience. He will keep you engaged in class. I enjoyed having him as a professor, and would highly recommend taking a class with him.
Very knowledgeable. Lots of homework and lectures are intense.
I took this class for CE-EC 100 Earthquakes. It was actually a very interesting class that I really enjoyed. Attendance is mandatory for every class or you may receive a failing grade. Overall, great professor and easy class as long as you show up.
No homework in this class except one presentation at the end. Very easy going teacher but you must attend all classes and participate!
Professor Farid is very chill and laid back. There is no homework, and you just get graded on your attendance and one presentation on the last day of the class. The lectures are interesting, but there are a lot of videos which can be boring sometimes.
This course was really heavy on videos, meaning a lot of time was spent just watching something. It was hard to hold focus for a full three hours, sometimes there was a break sometimes there was not.
Farid knows what he is talking about but is not the most structured lecture-er.
This class was so boring and the professor would just talk the entire time, a lot of the time about stuff we didn't need to know. I said "would take again" but I would try to find someone else before.
Mr. Farid was a very good teacher, he was clear and direct about the topic he was talking about. Just beware about final group projects, they require a greater amount of forethought.
Decent
He's a pretty understanding person who is available for help if you need it. He showed a lot of videos in this class which I thought were cool. He also has a sense of humor, and even made it to class when he had a family emergency in the same day. This shows he loves to teach and cares about his classes.
A lot of videos are watched in class, making the 3 hour class time unnecessary. Not great at explaining to improve conceptualization, and tends to cut off students when they are answering a question. Visual aides provided are definitely helpful and provide some clarity.
Professor Farid was a very nice professor but was a little hard to follow in the lectures.
I took a 1 credit class with him, and it was really boring, but not terrible.
Dr. Farid is a great professor! He has so much knowledge and you can tell he enjoys sharing it. He is always in a good mood and he is always fun to be around. He makes class exciting even for a 2 3/4 hr class. He was great. I loved it. I will definitely be taking more classes from him.
I enjoyed the majority the lectures, some of the concepts may have been rather difficult to understand if you had not taken higher level classes prior to this class. Professor Farid is clearly very passionate about the subjects of earthquakes and geotechnical engineering. The 3 hour time frame of this class can make it difficult to stay engaged.
Professor is pretty good and simple to understand.
During class, he would get passionate about the topic of desiccation. It's nice to see a prefacer who really gets into it.
Professor Farid knows his material very well and his brain works like excel so get ready for lots of numbers and symbols. He almost over complicates the material by explaining every detail. The book was horrible and very hard to follow. Show up to class and be weary of his powerpoint slides changing as you won't always get the notes posted.
The lectures were a little hard to follow. He does ask if people are understanding, so don't be afraid to say no if you don't (you are probably not the only one even if you feel that way). Chegg and the book got me through the homework. I didn't feel like I got what I need for tests and homework from the lectures.
He sometimes makes indirect negative comments about religion in his lectures. We rarely go through example problems in class. He instructs students to stop taking notes on crucial material to focus on him, and then quickly changes slides when note-taking is allowed, leaving no time to write efficiently. Expect to self-teach the material.
Sometimes it is not possible for you to write the notes you want, because the professor will move fast to the next slides. Time is not enough to cover all the materials of this course. Not enough practice problems worked in class.
Overall all it has been ok. It can definitely be better. Materials are hard, the in class problems are very hard to look back and see what Farid did to try trace back his steps. I wish he took the time to write out the solution neatly. The lectures are great for the most part. Farid knows his stuff! It take over a month to get any grades back.
He's a nice guy and can be charismatic but he does not respect students time. He will try to cram 10 minutes of lecture into the last 5 minutes of class and often goes past the allotted time for class. His teaching style is very lecture heavy and is a lot to process. I think his lectures need to be greatly condensed or simplified.
Slow grader and heavy lectures but very passionate about the information and will answer any question you have.
He is a very passionate teacher who knows all of the material very well and genuinely wants to help you learn. Sometimes he gets too deep into the material. He expects you to start the class examples, and then he will finish them with you. Homework assignments are graded weeks after you turn them in, which is unhelpful. He offers extra credit!
Yikes. Don't do it. I would suggest taking this class at another university if Dr. Farid is the only one teaching it. The powerpoint used in lecture makes no sense. He scribbles all over the slides and then erases it before students can understand it (and it's not recorded). He went way too in-depth compared to previous years of this course.
Professor Farid is clearly a very smart man but he isn't a good teacher. This is a hard class and he doesn't do a good job teaching it. His notes are a mess and the slides he posts are not the same ones he uses in class which makes some examples and information impossible to find later on. BSU has many Geotech professors take them instead.
Lecture slides were convoluted and hard to follow, slides posted on canvas were not updated, rushed through complicated material because he was behind, very information-dense course, talked down to students, had to teach myself a lot of the material, does not record lectures. I would not recommend this professor.
Topics can be covered quickly at times. I had to spend a lot of time going back through the material to gain an undersatnding.
Takes multiple weeks to grade homework assignments and tests. Does not do more than one example problem per subject in class and homework assignments have much more difficult problems. However, he does want students to learn and participate in class. I think if he was more organized it would be much easier of a class.
He's an exceptionally dedicated educator and proficient in every aspect of the subject matter. Occasionally, he delves extensively into the content. Unfortunately, homework submissions receive grading weeks after submission, which proves to be less than beneficial. On a positive note, he provides opportunities for extra credit!
Dr. Farid knows a lot about geotechnical engineering and he is very passionate about the subject, but can often go into too much detail, causing students to get lost. We weren't tested very often besides on the homework, which takes weeks to get graded, so it was hard to go into an exam without knowing the type of content that may be on there.
Class was taught at a quick pace but there is lots of material to cover
Grades exams/homework very slowly. Does not give many examples in class, mostly lectures about material. He does encourage interaction with your peers which is good, but it is not very often.
He knows the material but the homework is difficult and distantly related to the lectures.
He took a long time to grade assignments. The homework was difficult and distantly related to the lectures.
He taught fast and it was hard to understand. He's smart but not so good at explaining to new students. If I could go back, I'd definitely take notes on the examples he gives, even if he says not to.
Only one example problem is covered per subject in class, while homework assignments present much tougher problems. Nonetheless, the teacher values student learning and engagement in class. Sometimes, the teacher goes deeply into the content, which is beneficial. However, the delay in grading homework submissions is not helpful.
While this professor does care for how the students are doing in class, his lectures are challenging to follow. Very few examples are given in class, so you will be lost and confused when doing homework.
He is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. However, it is difficult to follow along with lectures and he often moves too quickly and explains the content in a complex manner that is difficult for students to understand. He often does example problems in class, but relies on the students to provide the answers without any explanation.
Arvin is a really smart professor and understands his material thoroughly. He answers your question to the best of his ability. The material he teaches is hard, but if you take notes and study you should be fine.
Ask questions in class. The homework is really hard, so work together on it. You will not pass the tests if you don't study a lot. He gives lots of opportunities to get extra credit, so take advantage of that. He does take a while to get grades back to you, so use the answer keys to study. The tests are very hard, but he offered them as take home.
Arvin is a good professor in that he knows so much about the work in the field and had the ability to explain things to the class. It was just hard to understand everything that we covered because we moved quick through topics that weren't necessarily easy.
Farid is a very fast passed teacher. He is very educated on the material he is teaching however is very hard too follow. In class examples tend to be hard to follow and are loosely related to homework and tests. Assignments such as homework took weeks to get back and graded and often where returned after the test covering the material.
okay professor
The professor moves at a fast pace and covers a lot in the lectures. Information is not always presented in the clearest way, although the professor will stop and encourage questions. A very smart and talented professor and expects the same from his students, be prepared to take a lot of notes and pay attention closely.
Dr. Farid is a good professor, he cares about his students and tries his best to get everyone to understand the material and concepts. At times his grading system can be unclear and he likes to go over the allotted time for lecture.
Dr. Farid is clearly very passionate about teaching and incredibly knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. The lectures were very fast paced and not always clear when it came to more difficult subjects. The examples done in class were helpful but not posted solved. Overall I didn't mind the class but it could have been better if it was slower.
Dr. Farid was a decent professor. He has a difficult time honoring students' time and he would sometimes go over the class time by anywhere from 5-8 minutes at least a few times a month. It is almost the end of the semester and he still has 5 assignments to grade. He does sometimes go into detail in places that we really did not need.
Difficult material but is manageable
he is a very smart guy and has a lot of knowledge about in field as well as theoretical methods. but he has a hard time dumbing things down for us "simpletons"
Farid assigned 3 homework assignments on the very last lecture before finals. He was mad because students started to leave 5 minutes after lecture ended. Farid is extremely inconsiderate professor. Unfortunately BSU took switched a great professor he was supposed to teach the class instead of him. If you have the option. Skip taking Farid!
He goes really fast in the lectures so try to keep up. The slides were posted on canvas but not updated when went over in class, most in-class problems were not in the slides or mentioned in them. The notes on OneDrive were hard to follow and easy to get lost in them. He also takes a weeks to grade homework and tests.
Professor Farid is passionate when it comes to Geotechnical Engineering. That being said, get ready to learn the class material on your own time. The first half of the class is the most engaging point of the year. Homework takes roughly ~3 to 5 weeks to get graded. The notes on OneNote are messy, thus, closely follow along to avoid getting lost.
Professor Farid is passionate about the subject, but the fast-paced lectures and delayed homework grading can make the class challenging. Using unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
His teaching style is very information based, examples are given but it is up to the class to find the answers. Farid is very knowledgeable in his field, however at times that he struggles to dumb down concepts to students & relies on students knowing concepts from other courses when explaining things. He is willing to help and answers questions.
He's confusing, fast & he crams. 3 things graded until final week. He thinks little of students' time. Take home pop quizzes were due same day at weird hours. He assigns homework randomly due randomly, a lot during dead & finals week. Homework's harder than lectures & his notes were unhelpful/messy. No final review. Good thing was group homework.
