Speeds through lectures but stops frequently to make sure everyone is following along. Teaches with the goal of having the student understand. As stated earlier, sometimes goes through examples and material too quickly. Attendance not required, homework barely counts toward final grade. Study hard for tests. Just an easy guy teaching a hard class.
Arya is great! For the exam (which is by far the most important part of any math 103 student's grade), he is one of the few profs to hold review sessions. Clear. Very reasonable guy, and in the rare moments when he gets off-topic, says the funniest things. It was worth taking 103 at 8:45 to have him as a teacher.
Arya is AMAZING. He knows the material and explains it so well. He's also incredibly helpful, and will go out of his way to make sure his students get the help they need to do well. He's one of the few professors who genuinely cares about his/her students.
Arya is a genuinely kind person and a good teacher to boot. He also doesn't sugar coat thing, which I admire. His recitations were much more clear and helpful than the actual lecture portion of the class. Take a class with him if you can!
Roy is one of the best maths teacher ever. Very passionate about the subject and hence lectures with energy. He is one of the few teachers who not only know the content but also know how to teach! His exams might be harder than others but it prepares you for the final. He tries his best and generally gives two 3hrs revision sessions before final!
Quite possibly the best teacher I've ever had.
Greatest teacher I've had at Duke. Cares about his students. Lays out hard topics and makes sure everyone understands them. And in the end, his section always ends up with the best grades. Nuff said.
Duke has finally gotten it right, when it comes to hiring the right teacher. Whether to commend the university or the math department, I know not; but I can certainly say in Arya we find a professor who connects with his students and teaches with a never before seen passion.Never in a million years did I think I'd end up with an "A" in Math 103!!!
Math 103 is a tough course, but Arya presents it so that everyone can understand. His midterms are tough, but they prepare you for the final. And he holds extensive review sessions before the final. Also, his sections always do the best on the final, which is the most important part of the grade in Math 103.
Not too hard. Great quality! Take 103 with him.
Dr. Roy is passionate about math, and compassionate to his students. He's the greatest teacher, no greatest man the department has gifted us with. Ladies... He's also pretty hot to boot!
Had Roy for Math 103 and Physics 62, but he's not in the Math department anymore though - only physics. Great teacher - cares a lot about his students. Enthusiastic, hilarious, AWESOME! Duke has gotten it right with this guy!
He's the best! If you do not have him as a recitation prof. switch!!! You literally don't have to read the book/go to lecture once he's explained it to you (but you should read the book for good measure). Physics is pretty hard but he made it all very understandable. He's also funny which made class fun!
As aforementioned, Arya is the man. He made the topics as understandable as they could possibly be and actually made them all interesting! He has a part nerdy part dry sense of humor which makes the recitation all the more enjoyable. I HIGHLY recommend him for whatever class he teaches. Definitely the best hard science/math prof I've had here.
Professor Roy is the man, I took him for math 103 this semester (which is one of the hardest math classes) and scraped an A- without doing anything all semester. He is the best at explaining very complicated ideas and he prepares you far better than any other teacher for the final. Every one of his students left the final saying how easy it was
Definitely the best professor I've ever had! Lays out concepts so clearly in lecture, goes out of his way to help his students and really prepares you for the block final--which basically determines your grade in the class. Funny guy who clearly loves what he's doing and cares about his students.
ARYA IS THE MAN! Take Math 103 with him. He motivates you to work hard and actually enjoy math and see the beauty in it, unlike most teachers, which is why his sections do the best on the final, which is what matters in terms of your grade. I was so scared to take 103 as my first math class at Duke, but I got an A! Plus, he's easy on the eyes ;)
I know that he teaches both math 103 and physics 53. Both of the classes deal with difficult subject, but Dr. Roy would be willing to help you, and if you try hard enough I think you will end up with a decent grade. He also takes lots of time to write up summary of almost every lecture in front of the homework set, and they are really helpful too!
I think this might've been his first time teaching Physics 5, but he was excellent. He makes the material clear, and he explains it all himself, he doesn't rely on the textbook to teach. His tests can be a little long. Not necessarily difficult, just too long to thoroughly think through problems. In any case, I would highly recommend him!
Arya Roy is an incredible professor. He is literally amazing at explaining concepts and has a vested interest in the students understanding of fundamentals. I would recommend takIng the class for sure!
Dr. Roy is absolutely wonderful! His lectures are very clear and instructive. Also, he truly cares about his students and spends so much time outside of class helping people understand the concepts. He made me understand and appreciate physics even though I considered it to be one of my worst subjects! Take his class if you get the chance!
Roy makes everything CRYSTAL clear. Great at summarizing and giving general steps and approaches to the problems.
One of the best professors I have had at Duke; he truly cares about his students and will do everything in his power to make sure they understand the material.
Arya is a great professor. He enjoys the subject and is good at lecturing. I would recommend his class, and if you can't get into his section, it is worth attending his lectures anyway because they are really good.
Best Multivariable professor by far. Best teacher I've had at Duke so far and an engaging teacher. Always fun to attend lecture and you really will appreciate math after this.
There is a reason his students do the best on the final (by a lot). Absolutely the best 212 teacher. He is great at explaining difficult concepts and really makes sure that everyone understands. Plus he doesn't collect homework.
Arya is the best math professor! He made 212 so enjoyable and really increased my interest in math. He is by far the best 212 professor at Duke and his sections always do the best. He is great at explaining concepts and is very helpful if you seek him out for office hours. He's a really cool, interesting guy, too. Take him for 212!
Roy is unbelievably brilliant yet relates to his students' confused state of mind as if he were a math103 student. He lectures using his own insights that you can't possibly find elsewhere. He is infinitely patient/sacrifices so much time to make everything make perfect sense. You'll think differently about math and your own mathematical ability.
My favorite professor at Duke so far. One you can talk about life with.
He's full of useful advice, like, expediency comes from practice and knowing techniques are more important than memorization. Also, just take a 1000 integrals and you'll ace this class!
This man is magic.
Great teacher. Lazy at times with grading and putting things up online, but extremely lucid in explaining concepts. Wants his students to succeed and will do anything to help them succeed. Go to his lecture - it is invaluable.
Best math teacher I've ever had. This guy not only gets math but also REALLY knows how to teach it.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Roy is very passionate about physics and is phenomenal at breaking down more complicated concepts. He also personally handed back recitation quizzes to every single student and explained exactly what they did wrong. Very interesting to talk to as well.
Best math professor at Duke. Extremely nice, helpful, and easy to understand. Infinitely better than most other multivariable calc professors. Get him if at all possible. Note: multi is just really hard here in general.
Amazing lecturer, will do whatever it takes to make sure each and every student gets the material. Extremely helpful, funny, and handsome. Wish he taught every subject!
Arya Roy is brilliant. He is very clear and urges students to understand material conceptually. He is very funny and very approachable.
Perfect combination of brilliance and clarity. Physics wasn't my thing coming in and he completely changed that. Incredibly approachable, cares a LOT about his students. Personally attended every recitation and stayed late every day. Expects a lot but he works just as hard as you do to help you succeed. One of the best professors I've ever had.
Awesome prof!
Arya is a really good teacher. He makes even something as hard as general relativity understandable and builds up from the basics. He is able to explain the way he thinks about topics instead of just how to apply formulas. Very disorganized though.
Want proof that God exists? Attend a Roy recitation and listen to him speak. No man can make physical concepts that clear. No man
Wonderful teacher. He has an ability to transmit knowledge. Always in a good mood, and very approachable! Great guy in general.
Roy is an amazing teacher. Great sense of humor and extremely approachable. Teaches in a very clear manner. The tests he writes are very logical and reasonable.
Truly amazing professor. Will make sure you understand all concepts perfectly.
The best professor ever! Knows the material and explains the concepts in the clearest way!
Absolute genius. You actually look forward to attending recitations and learning about the subject matter.
Best lectures I've ever had, managed to deviate from the standard teaching of the subject out of consideration for those with less background knowledge, and it worked perfectly. Condensed complex conceptual problems into simple lessons on how to generally approach problems and designed problem sets and tests to be impeccably fair.
This man is the reason why I understand physics. He doesn't try to be so pedantic that you cannot understand him. He is a genius and can really connect with his students. He is a stand up guy, and I am so so thankful that he is part of the Duke math department!
Roy is the greatest teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Just 2 hours in recitation with Roy will probably teach you more than a month of lectures. He's just that good. His ability to explain and teach difficult concepts is unmatched by anyone I have ever encountered. I've had Roy for 3 semesters now and have gotten A+'s in all his classes.
Arya is easily the best professor I've had at Duke and debatably the best teacher I have ever had. He is a genius and makes the material so accessible to his students, and is there for you and wants you to succeed. He got me so excited about physics, and I would even take advanced classes in the future just to have him as a teacher again
Arya Roy is an amazing physics professor and really tries to break down the idea that physics is just a bunch of math equations and nonsense. Professor Roy is also really fun and always tries to help students out. Although, he is the only professor I can think of who can incorporate Plato's Republic with physics...
Professor Roy is funny, relatable, and cares about his students. He's clearly a brilliant guy but he explains concepts in ways that make it easy for students to understand. His class isn't exactly easy, but he really wants students to do well and his tests aren't all that bad. Probably the best professor I've ever had!
he is god
He is THE BEST professor I've ever had, he makes everything so clear and actually makes you understand the material! If you follow the path he sets out for you, you will do well in the class. The quizzes and exams are very similar to class work, he is fair.
Dr Roy is the Greatest. I had him for two semesters of physics and am so thankful for his teaching.
He somehow made physics make sense to me. The class was challenging but he taught super well!
He is a genius and very good at inspiring students.
Dr. Roy was my recitation instructor for 151 and 152. He is an absolute legend and manages to make the toughest concepts manageable.
I took the class over a 6 week summer period and moved at a pretty fast pace. However, Dr. Roy offered a lot of support, advice, and help in and out of the classroom. He was very charismatic and almost made me enjoy the material, which helped me complete the enormous workload needed to be successful in the class.
He is an amazing lecturer who explains concepts in a very manageable and intuitive way. Very charismatic.
He is amazing in every way and so helpful and humble
Every lecture was like getting your mind blown for an hour! The homework was hard, but Arya's awesome explanations as well as overall hilarity was a great combo!
Arya has a great physics mind but leans towards teaching theory rather than practical examples, which can be frustrating for an "engineering" physics class. His homework is much harder than the test or quiz problems, but sometimes he'll throw something weird in there you've never seen before so study carefully.
Arya makes his lectures entertaining and easy to follow, but he also provides notes on sakai (so you don't need to be there to do well). Highly recommend going and FLUNCHing him.
He's an amazing dude that connects with his students and makes sure they understand concepts rather than memorize equations. 10/10 would take again.
Definitely the best teacher I've had so far at Duke. PHENOMENAL lecturer... please show up to his classes because he's what makes the tuition worth paying. The class is challenging with those who haven't had a lot of past physics, but it is very possible to do well if you work hard.
A professor who makes the lectures interesting. Roy is super focused on the geometrical meanings of the proofs and problems, and he gives out a good illustration. Lectures and problems are generally not hard, and he gives out notes to help understanding. Super willing to help people. Textbook is used, but you can survive without it.
Professor Roy is truly one of the best professors at Duke, even though I skipped most of the lectures as I already knew the material. He makes you understand the concepts rather than memorize equations, which makes Physics 151DL a very challenging class for those who don't have a background in physics.
Roy is an absolute godsend - he makes physics so easy to understand and he makes you want to come to class and learn. You'll leave the class learning so much more than just introductory physics, absolutely worth the work and worth the effort.
I love the way Dr. Roy structured his class. It allows students to engage with the material in the way that's best for them while the weekly quizzes allow you to have consistent feedback about how you're understanding the material. He was very clear about how he presented material and very patient when helping.
Only issue I take is with lack of organization in lectures. A typical lecture from him involves a lot of intuition to eventually achieve some kind of result-the problem I have is that I never know what I am supposed to take away. Have we made a definitive statement? Is this result for a specific case? If so, what assumptions have we made?
Arya Roy is an incredible lecturer. Unlike a lot of my other engineering classes at Duke, I actually feel like I learn how to do problems live in lecture. Roy cares that we understand the concepts and that we can do more than crunch numbers. Stay after class to ask questions so that he knows your face.
Roys lectures are very well clear and his way of explaining things ensures conceptual understanding rather than memorizing. He usually ties in 1 or 2 interesting practical applications of the theory. Hes very engaging with students and he seems very passionate about the subject. A bit disorganized and tests are tough but manageable.
This class was one of the hardest ones I've ever taken, mostly because I failed the first exam, but Roy was always there to help me and really tried to make sure I understood the material. He's one of the smartest people I know, but a bit unorganized. Tests are tough, as he wants you to truly understand things instead of crunching numbers. 10/10
just god
Roy is the best lecturer I ever had. He has such a deep understanding of physics and cares a lot about his students. Go to lectures and go to office hours. He has the ability to explain physics like no other professor. Funny guy too
Arya Roy is simply AWESOME! Lectures are dope and really make understanding the material better. The weekly quizzes are pretty difficult . Definitely can't walk in without studying for them unless you are already a master in physics. Usually gives one hard midterm and one easier midterm. Final was very difficult. Overall, great class but not easy!!
Arya Roy is a good lecturer (would recommend going if you can sit through a physics lecture) and very accessible outside of class in office hours. He is pretty disorganized and not in good contact with the TAs that do the homework and lead discussions, so prepare for some occasional confusion.
Roy is a phenomenal professor and very passionate about the topic. He was able to make very complex physics objectives easier to understand (his lecture explanations are arguably better than the textbook). Lectures are easy to follow, and the lecture notes are very reflective of exams.
Guy oozes charisma and makes even the most boring physics concepts interesting. Throws in personal anecdotes that are often quite amusing. Very helpful in office hours. Structure of class is a bit chaotic due to lack of consistency across TAs and the prof. Quizzes can be rough. Him and Derek are the Holy Duo.
Professor Roy is the best introductory physics teacher at Duke; he teaches both mechanics and EM. While the course itself is quite difficult, Roy explains every topic in detail and is amazing at making the lectures actually interesting. Watch out for weekly quizzes though, they can be a pain if you aren't comfortable with the material.
This class is one of the harder ones at Duke, but I'm honestly glad Roy is the one teaching both 151 and 152. He's a very caring professor and very accessible outside of class, but the material and weekly quizzes can be tough sometimes. Make sure you read ahead and understand the material before the lecture or else it will be very confusing.
Roy is a beast. Definitely take one of his classes if you get the chance.
Best lecturer I ever had. This guy is unbelievably funny, charismatic, and most of all really knows his stuff. Lectures are hilarious and engaging; homeworks are long but soln's are posted. Very approachable, finds ways to connect physics to real life, tells some funny ass stories. The unicorn of the math/physics dept. Will make your day.
This class went way too fast. It's hard to judge his teaching ability when he's teaching a weed out class.
I feel like he has a cult following. He's interesting to listen to and is charismatic, but the content is difficult and he seems to be willing to let a good portion of the class fail. he can go fast at times which makes it difficult to understand. I think he means well, but the class is difficult and he is often not understanding during COVID-19.
My opinion of Dr. Roy is affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, but he really isn't very adaptable. However, he's pretty funny when he's in-person, he's clearly super knowledgeable about physics, and he's decent at articulating difficult concepts understandably. If you like lecture classes and are willing to work on your own, he's the teacher for you.
Dr. Roy is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are funny and he throws in fun stories that somehow pertain to physics. I highly recommend going to his lectures not only for that but also because they really help you understand the concepts. Do as many practice problems as you can, as that's how you truly learn to work on problems.
Dr. Roy is super funny and personable, but this class was very challenging. We had quizzes every week which were usually pretty hard, and the midterms/final were definitely rough.
Dr Roy is an intelligent professor who has a humorous charisma during his lectures. However, class material was unorganized, grading was unreasonably harsh, and the questions often didn't match up to what was taught. If the whole class did poorly on a test, his first move would be to blame the class' study habits instead of his own teaching system.
Dr. Roy is sassy, making lectures entertaining. His class is really really difficult and you need to put in a lot of work. He seems kind of unapproachable, but is always willing to answer questions. His lectures go kind of fast sometimes, so it's important to pay attention.
Roy is a good professor but intense. Tests/quizzes were very difficult to complete in the allotted time period. He explains problem-solving techniques thoroughly and gives practical applications in his lectures that make you feel in awe of the world around you. To do well, you just have to keep practicing until you have it all down in muscle memory
Although I ever met him in person, he is one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures explain everything, and he clearly states what topics the exams will cover -- no surprises. The only thing is that his exams are SUPER challenging. Even though they were open note, there was barely enough time to complete them, and grading was strict.
Apparently I'm not alone. His lectures were great, but the course over the summer is not designed for making many errors. Graded by few things and the quizzes were each 10% of your grade. The exams were MUCH harder than homework or quizzes but basically much harder versions of the questions you've seen in homework or quizzes.
He responded to a global pandemic by INCREASING the weekly workload and making the WEEKLY TESTS (on top of over four hours of lecture per week) harder. Seven days before the final, he uploaded hours worth of new material. This teacher does not give breaks, does not want you to get a good grade, and doesn't care what you have to say about that.
Professor Roy is extremely charismatic, but he was probably the least understanding teacher when it came to COVID. Workload seemed to have increased since PHYS151, with lectures being well over 4hours/week. If you don't stay on top of the homework, the weekly quizzes will eat you alive. Very difficult class, but it's a rite of passage.
His class was the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life simply because I can't understand physics. Yet, this man was the most entertaining lecturer I've ever had. He is incredibly smart & engaging & if he taught other classes I would take them. When I was withdrawing he offered to tutor me one on one but I had to withdraw. What a guy
Professor Roy is great and cares a lot about his students, but his class was by far the hardest one I've ever taken. Between labs, discussion, lecture, and homework, this class is a huge time commitment. There are weekly quizzes to be prepared for, and the midterms and final are incredibly difficult.
Dr. Roy is a great lecturer, and although the weekly quizzes and midterms were challenging, they were solvable if you watched the lectures, did the homework, and attended discussions. Very knowledgeable about course materials and gives clear answers to student questions. Easy labs.
Arya is a great guy and incredibly knowledgeable, but this class is quite challenging. Due to the asynchronous nature of lectures this semester, he assigned upwards of 4 hours of lectures a week. This is not including the required textbook and posted notes reading, plus hw. Midterms and quizzes are challenging, and the final was very difficult.
He's a really cool guy and explained things well during lectures. The class was super hard though (took during fall 20). There was too much video lecture material each week, and exams were brutal. The class was easier than 151, although I could never figure out how to do well. If you're struggling with the class, definitely go and talk to him.
The class is graded on a few things, including a final worth 40%. It was absurd, and the statistics showed that. Your grade will not correlate in any way to your actual performance, and he is perfectly willing to admit that.
Dr. Roy is a fantastic lecturer. However, he uses tests and quizzes to differentiate people in the class, the results of which are shocking to many. He is tough, but very consistent.
Professor Roy is always able to give a great intuitive understanding of the physical concepts at play. There is a lot of information to cover in this class but professor Roy is always able to make it interesting and applicable. Must go to lectures in order to understand the concepts, but lectures are also supplied with notes and homework solutions.
The lectures were great, they definitely taught you the content well. Weekly quizzes made me hate physics and your grade is determined by basically only quizzes and tests, meaning that you're never gonna catch a break (the final is worth 40% of your grade and no one knows the final grade curve). Homeworks and discussion helped a ton.
Dr. Roy's lectures are pretty engaging, and they aim to give you more of an intuitive understanding of the content, which I liked. The course grade is almost entirely quizzes and tests, which can be stressful, but I felt like he was always clear with what we could expect.
10/10 would take again. Roy teaches the way I wish every professor would teach - concept first, explained as intuitively as possible, on a whiteboard so you can actually follow along. He brings in tons of historical and current examples of ideas being used, and is a massively entertaining lecturer. Exams not too bad if you don't fall behind.
Dr. Roy is a great lecturer, and explains everything really well so you have a good understanding of the content. Discussions and homework were essential to get a good grade on the quizzes, and you need to study a lot to do well on the tests. Make sure you go to class, do the homework, and don't fall behind. 152 was about as difficult as 151.
Professor Roy is a fantastic lecturer and makes the material engaging and approachable. I would HIGHLY recommend going to his office hours as it will really solidify your understanding and make your life a whole lot easier come exam time.
EXCELLENT.
INCREDIBLE LECTURES.
The lectures can be good, but he often goes on tangents not really related to the content. Otherwise, he was pretty good and the midterms were pretty similar to the homework. If you took AP physics 1 and 2, this course will be easy. If you didn't, you will need to work hard, because those that took the same course in HS will wreck your curve.
Arya Roy is definitely funny. He is very clearly an intelligent person but I hated the class. The answer keys are constantly messed up, he has terrible handwriting. The notes he gives are sparse and his lectures are just straight off topic tangents. The labs are easy. Your discussion teacher will likely be an idiot. The final (40%) is impossible.
Good funny professor, lecture is optional. Discussion sections and quizzes every week, the quizzes are hard but doable. The midterms are pretty hard and the final is 40% and impossible. PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE CREDIT.
High school physics. If you've taken IB physics/A-level physics (which don't give AP credit), the class is a breeze (~2hr spent outside class). Arya Roy provides practice exams and the homework are very helpful for exam prep. Grading of weekly quizzes (~10x) and midterms (2x) is prompt and lenient. His lectures are excellent, go and don't sleep.
Roy is the most entertaining lecturer I've had so far but I'm not sure how useful the lectures are for learning the content. Most of the grade is tests and weekly quizzes which makes the class challenging and work heavy. Fair warning, everything is curved to a B/B+ average, so the curve will be ruined by people who have physics background.
Best Physics professor at Duke. Incredible lectures, very knowledgeable, and fair quizzes and tests
Arya roy grades fairly, gives good lectures, and is fun.
Literally do not go to lecture. His lectures make no sense and he teaches them terribly. He has really good notes posted online so Id just look at those before the quizzes and try to understand them. He also doensnt post complete hw solutions so I lowkey wouldn't recommend doing them and just focusing on the discussion questions/practice exams.
Professor Roy is an amazing lecturer! He tries to explain physical phenomenon/derivations intuitively before teaching us how to solve problems. His notes are extremely helpful and contain everything you need to know for the assessments (you do not even have to take notes in class because everything is available on Sakai).
Arya Roy is one of the best professors I have had at Duke. Take this class if you want to be taught by someone with a true passion for physics and teaching. He does not prepare for any lecture. He stands up at the board and begins, showing how every formula is derived effortlessly and relating concepts clearly. 100% take this class while at Duke.
Roy truly is the goat! Best lectures I have ever attended at Duke. Get ready to understand physics on a whole other level. He really gives you fundamentals and teaches you to question the world around you. Weekly quizzes are annoying but aren't bad if you do the homework and discussion. Exams are definitely doable- Roy really is there to help you!
My best professor of the semester. Arya Roy is THE GOAT of physics. He is a great lecturer and his tests and quizzes are nothing but reasonable. His passion is contagious, his class interesting, and the concepts highly applicable in engineering. If you make a genuine effort, you will succeed. Nothing but praise for Dr. Roy.
Amazing professor with great lectures. Weekly quizzes are rough but they make you learn.
I didn't find Roy's lecture particularly useful. I found a lot of resources online so that I could study for his class. I found it easier than 151 and in general very manageable. 10/10 would take again.
This class is hard if you don't go to lecture and don't do the homework, which is tempting because neither is required. However, if you mostly understand how to do the discussion quizzes and the homework, you'll do well on the midterms and the final since the questions are very similar. Also, Professor Roy is great during lecture.
I had Roy for 151 & 152. This is the only time that having the same professor for a year wouldn't drive me crazy. His lectures are outstanding, I learned ALOT. He has taught me ALL THE PHYSICS I KNOW AND PROBABLY ALL I'LL EVER KNOW. The class is hard though, so WORK HARD! I wish the final weighed less but overral GREAT CLASS, GREAT PROFESSOR.
Arya Roy is the the best teacher I have had in my life. I took his summer class. His lectures were more clear than I have ever seen E&M made. He also gave me great life advice and validated my way of thinking and my questions about Physics. I was never bored. I'm sad that I don't have the opportunity to take more classes with him. I'll miss him.
He's really good. Lectures are fun and helped me understand the material. The curve is ruined by those who have taken physics in high school, since Roy curves the mean to the boundary between B/B+. We had equation sheets for 152 midterms (but didn't have them for 151) and exam problems are more formulaic than 151.
This class is graded almost entirely on quizzes and labs which is frustrating but he is a very entertaining lecturer. If you haven't taken E&M in high school however it may be tough to grasp the lectures.
Some of the best and most intriguing lectures I've attended, bit of a tough grader but as long as you show work you'll be fine. All homework is optional but you're screwed for the weekly quizzes if you skip the hw.
He's a funny guy and he makes physics interesting. Lectures are boring and redundant so its hard to will yourself to go, but his notes are really good and (if you have some prior knowledge) are honestly sufficient. Practice discussions for exams.
Excellent professor.
I think he is probably the best teacher I have ever had. The lectures were very interesting and motivating although tests are kinda hard.
Probably one of the best lecturers I have ever had. He makes them super interesting and he is funny enough to keep you entertained. He explains the concepts conceptually rather than just telling you the formulas and how to solve, which really helps you truly learn the material. It is a difficult course however.
A very difficult freshman class. If you didn't take AP physics in highschool, be prepared for a rough adjustment period. Fantastic professor who lectures clearly and concisely off the dome. Exams are most of the class grade, so take them seriously and do the homework, even though its not mandatory.
Dr. Roy is an incredible lecturer who has a wealth of knowledge about physics and its many applications to engineering. Attendance and homework are optional but meant to prepare you for the weekly quizzes in discussion. Quizzes can sometimes be difficult but show you what to practice. If you put in the effort this class is very rewarding.
This is the most difficult class I have ever taken. I thought 151 was okay, but I was far from prepared for 152. The amount of time necessary to do well in this class is insane if you don't have a significant amount of prior knowledge. I felt like no matter how much I studied, I always failed the weekly quizzes. Professor Roy is excellent, though.
Be on top of the weekly quizzes. This class is relatively assessment-heavy. Partial credit is NOT generous, so stay consistent on midterms and exams. Dr. Roy is an amazing teacher who is dedicated to his students, but he expects and demands a lot of his students- be prepared for a tough grind in his class for a good grade.
Roy is the best professor I've had at Duke! His lectures are mindblowing and he is so enthusiastic. He is clear, patient, friendly, and stays after class to answer questions. This class is a ton of work since theres homework, discussion, and quiz every week, but the structure helped me not fall behind. The tests are hard but fair. He's the best!
I am not a physics person, and I am not great at physics, but this has been my favorite class so far at Duke. Prof Roy is a great lecturer, he encourages to ask questions and clearly explains stuff. He is very funny also which makes lectures even more interesting. He is willing to meet for extra feedback after exams. Overall one of the best profs.
Incredible clarity of thought -- truly a brilliant & charming man. Take his class.
Nice guy, the class is too hard. He talks about theory in lecture, but we are only ever tested on application.
Prof Roy makes lectures engaging and explains concepts clearly. The class has a lot of work, but the structure helps stay on track. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Roy's lectures are very interesting and easy to follow if you pay close attention. It is easy to get lost because he goes so fast but if you engage with what he's saying it will be a great lecture experience. He is hilarious and tenured, so he says what he wants. I do wish he spent more time on what exactly a Gaussian surface was and why we use it.
Prof. Roy will be my best man. I love him more than my own father. His lectures are incredible - they make me want to pay Duke more money. If you are lucky enough to meet this man, let alone be in his class, I recommend you take a moment to realize how lucky you are. I couldn't learn E&M from anyone else. Thats all you need to know.
Your ego will be bruised, but you will learn. I studied the most for this class, but averaged below 60s on tests. Midterms are very time dependent, so you might suffer despite knowing the content. Dont skip out on homework just because its not graded, and try to review Roy's lecture notes. Discussion is meh, textbook is ok, office hours are good.
Literally the goat. Dr. Roy pulls up to every class with only a marker in hand, which is all that he needs to deliver the most remarkable lectures known to man. He is a true genius who is incredible at conceptualizing the world of electromagnetism while offering witty remarks on the side. Easily one of the top 5 professors at Duke.
I'm sad I may never hear another lecture from Roy. Not only is he a lovely guy, but he has an awesome physics intuition that he does a great joy transferring to his students. He also does a great job contextualizing and conceptualizing the material. The discussions, quizzes, and tests are challenging but fair. I want him to teach all of my classes.
My goat, very funny during lectures. More of a life coach really, super respected.
Best professor I've ever had. Fantastic at explaining complex concepts and genuinely wants his students to learn.
AMAZING guy, great lecturer, just really fricking tough exams / quizzes. I worked my butt off for my grade and botched the final so ended up a little unhappy but totally not his fault. I would take it with him again in a heartbeat - I would honestly just study differently for the final.
Best lecturer I have come across at Duke, even though not mandatory I would highly recommend attending. Homeworks are optional, but are very aligned with quiz content, so taking the time to complete them is worth it. Exams are difficult even with lots of studying, but practice tests are provided that can help.
Extraordinary and hilarious lecturer. Although lectures are not mandatory I would recommend going as they are fun to attend and he has an uncanny ability to explain complex E&M topics intuitively which helps with learning. The class is extremely difficult however. Recommend doing homework to help with quizzes and pray the curve will do the rest.
Dr. Roy is a superb lecturer and meticulously makes the class conducive to learning. The content is interesting and is definitely difficult with a learning curve. You must do homeworks, and I recommend the lecture notes when preparing for quizzes&exams. It is easy to have misunderstandings that lead to confusion down the line, so review, review.
Super engaging lecturer! Pretty tough class structure with the two exams and weekly quizzes but manageable at the same time. Personally felt like discussions were not as connected to quizzes and exams as PHY 151 so focus on learning homeworks first. Bombed the first exam and didn't recover well from there, but reflects more on myself than Dr. Roy.
Class is very very hard for most people, but amazing curve! Go to lecture and do homework and you will get a B or above.
