Thanks to Dr. Maxcey, Cog Psych is probably one of the best classes I've taken at Vanderbilt yet. She is truly a hilarious yet super clear and helpful lecturer, and all you need is to take notes and pay attention to get an A. Beware that Journal Article Exams require a lot of work the week before and a purchase of a workbook. Super easy A and fun!

Maxcey is amazing!! She loves psychology, but more than that she loves teaching! She's a fast talker but PowerPoints are easy to follow and she explains things really well. We never had outside work except reading a popular book for a book-based exam, and if you attended class you didn't need the textbook. She made it easy to learn a ton!

For an online class of over 120 students, her COVID plan is to have mandatory group meetings every week with close to zero help, and she asks those meetings to be recorded and sent to her. Really ineffective and stressful to all. Also the least flexible and understanding professor I have this semester towards internet issues/remote operating.

The grading scale is very unclear and relies more on students' abilities to write down every detail said in lecture instead of a fluid and insightful understanding and engagement with the course material. Maxcey attempts to apply an objective grading scale to essays, which are inherently subjective (like comparing apples to oranges).

Dr. Maxcey claims to be empathetic towards her student and often goes on and on about having her own kids and hoping they will get treated kindly and with respect by their professors. However, she speaks to her own students with a very condescending tone and spends most of the class ranting about her controversial, borderline political, opinions.

DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! The worst professor I have every had and I am a psychology major. Extremely hard grade on papers and not empathetic or available outside of class. Terrible. There are six 8-10 page papers and she grades very hard. I am good at Psychology and spent hours on the paper and got a C. So many people are withdrawing from class since we already missed the drop/add period. She gave little to no feedback and will not reconsider grades. I do not reccomend taking any class she teaches.

Maxcey's intro course feels needlessly tough after changes in her syllabus this year. The material's simple, but grading is harsh because of her weird rubric, making a perfect score or an A nearly impossible for 5+ 8pg papers. She doesn't believe in having grades yet makes grading hard. Also, contacting LAs is forbidden too though they do nothing.

Professor Maxcey is a very hard grader even though the material is easy to understand/interesting to learn about. There are many long papers that my classmates and I spent 8+ hours on and asked her for help and then she failed many students- the class average was a C. Lots of people have withdrawn and I am almost failing so I may be forced to.

When we received our first grade for our papers. Papers that were insightful received Fs. As the TAs graded based on numbers of terms that none of us knew because we were not a coherent rubric. She then spoke to us condescendingly and did not listen to any of our concerns, even leaving her LAs confused, as they had no idea what they were doing.

Professor Maxcey is a great lecturer with a passion for the study of psychology.
