this guy seriously sucks. he thinks hes way above all of his students, so hes very condescending. his tests are hard and you REALLY have to study. makes us do busy work for assignments that are only worth 5 pts but end up being 10 pages long of writing. THEY ARE SO POINTLESS and you will want to rip out your hair. DO NOT TAKE HIM, AVOID THIS CLASS
I took Ashley for Biostats lab. He is not horrible for this class, although I have heard horror stories for Biol 312. He is hard, that is for sure, but he makes it so you actually have to learn what you are doing, now if it was any other class than Biostats, maybe it would be cool to learn it... :) He is helpful in his office hours.
Biostats labs were confusing due to Dr. Carter's incomprehensible powerpoint lectures. A bunch of symbols that are never explained is all you will ever see. Ask lots of questions (and you will have lots of questions to ask, I'm sure) because you will get NOTHING by just listening and taking notes.
He keeps you on your toes and does not let you slack off. He grades on a curve so if you are in the top 20% of the class your fine otherwise watch out. I learnt more of the material in lab than lecture.
If you take this class be ready to work really hard. His assignments are 10 pages long and worth very little of your grade. The final is worth 33% of the class and is comprehensive. However, you will leave this class having learnt something.
Hard professor. THe exams are too long, wordy, vague and confusing. Study really hard for this class. Too bad he is the only one teaching for biol 312
Dr. Carter was great! Powerpoints were all that was needed to excel in this class. Stats is not hard, but tedious and one can hardly blame the professor for that. Helpful, friendly and receptive in office hours. Really tries to help students and uses a massive curve at time. Overall, great instructor who knows the material. Highly recommended.
He could be a good professor, but in only 50mins he tries to cram WAY too much theory into his powerpoint lectures so you end up leaving pretty confused. His exams are usually too much material to finish within the allotted time. But at least he grades off of a curve... but it's your responsibility to figure out your curved grades.
I don't get why people give him bad reviews or anything, I thought his class was great. Who else but Dr Carter can make STATISTICS entertaining? Tests were easy and was a breeze. Don't complain that you're doing bad when it's your own fault you didn't show up. I enjoyed using the old calculators. Looking forward to taking him in Evolutionary Bio
mult choice are wordy but once disected down theyre quite easy, infact almost identical from ones of old exams, which he provides. has a giant curve in the class usually raising people up a letter grade. However, on tests and overall less than 10 A s were given out so study hard !
Who teaches a math class w/PowerPoint? Carter. You have to use $1 calculators that don't even have an exponent to do endless calculations during test. He gives about 30MC and 2 pgs of free response to answer in 50 min. He gives analogies that only 1/4 of the class understands and oh yah, he uses you as a guinea pig for his research. Fun, right?
You are not given enough time to take the test, make things worse you have to do all these calculations on a cheap calculator that doesn't even have an exponent button. Majority of my class wasn't able to even finish the test. Only a certain number of students are able to receive an "A". I advise if you can, avoid taking him if not good luck.
Strict and compassionate at the same time. He gives you all the resources to get an A in the course. He posts handouts, and homework ahead of time. I go to his office hours for tips on homework. He likes Greenbay Packers and is outwardly-strict, but on the inside, he's a really nice guy.
What is amazing is that he post previous semester exams and get an A on the 1st exam. I got an 85% after the 3rd exam. Didn't finish due to the limited amount of time for the 2nd and 3rd exams. Plus only 3 exams out of the 4 total count towards final grade. I aced the 4th one. Got an A as the final grade
I thought that Carter was a great teacher. Yeah, using the dinky calculators was a pain in the butt, BUT it forced you to really learn the material. And everything you need is on the website... past exams extra worksheets, homework sheets from past sections. Just practice with those and you should be fine for the tests if you are prepared.
He is hard, but knows what hes talking about. extremly smart and his power points are very clear. Really good professor. Everything you need to know is clearly in the powerpoints.
A very generous man. Obviously very passionate about what he is teaching, and his powerpoint slides are BOSS. Seems to very interested in helping his students succeed and develop the practical skills necessary for the modern practice of biology. Provides a lot of extra practice problems through old exams, assignments, and handouts.
He is an overall great professor who cares about his students. Always there during office hours and is very helpful. Very approachable compared to other professors. As long as you study, practice, and master the practice exams you should ace your exams. The class is not bad at all since your given plenty of resources.
Statistics is pretty boring, but I thought Dr. Carter did a great job applying it to real life situations that everyone could relate to and made the subject bearable. All the resources needed to ace the class were provided by him. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY THEM! I never used the textbook but I attended class everyday and managed to get an A, no problem
Dr. Carter is a great teacher! lecture powerpoints are made available AFTER each lecture plus old exams are also available online. i highly recommend doing all the old exams, they help a lot. exams are curved using z-score, which can help your grade a lot. however, expect a lot of hw assignments/essays that aren't worth very much...
The lectures were good. It would have been more helpful if homework assignments and tests were returned sooner and if Dr. Carter had written comments to explain what was missing or wrong. This brain-damaged website insisted that I choose a textbook rating, even though THERE WAS NO TEXTBOOK.
ALL COURSES are SUPER curved. The assignments are like puzzles. Use your critical thinking and analytical skills to help. There is no guarantee that current exams and assnmts will be like previous semesters, but they still help as practice. Each semester, he puts something new in the exam or assnmts. STUDY GROUP! No book ever!
Easy course. I ditched class more than I attended, studied one day before midterms, and managed to get a high A in the end. He curves like crazy, so everyone's failure is to your benefit. Just study off of the lab manual and his powerpoints and do the practice exams and you will be fine.
I took his summer course. It wasn't hard at all. 3 tests, the last one is not cumulative. He posts previous semesters' exams, which is really helpful. Just study those, and you'll be ok. He curves so much. You don't need to buy the textbook, I never used it and got an A.
He is super hard and expect too much. He isn't very good at initiating discussions or giving feedback. Most discussions end after a student comment. His class is boring and doesn't help with the exams. You can only rely on your own studying.
hardest subject ever. If u got an A in calc it doesn't mean u will pass this class. His exams are so hard that the class average was less than 50%, HW is ridiculously hard. his lab TAs are awful and are new 2 teaching. this class requires a lot of studying and a lot of critical thinking (no memorization).its a PAIN, 1/2 the class repeated it before
either you get stats or you dont. if you dont, you're screwed. there were people who intuitively understood stats, which is why they did fine. but if you're not one of those people, you will struggle A LOT. carter isnt great at explaining and engaging things. exams are HARD and there's not enough time. also HE MAKES YOU USE OUTDATED CALCULATORS.
He does curve the tests but if you're not good with stats then the curve will not help you at all. He only curve the tests and nothing else. Don't expect him to give you a boost with the final grading if you're at a border line. The only curve you will get is from the test and that is it. I do not recommend him to anyone who is not good at stats.
Materials aren't that hard, it's they way he manages exams that make everyone's grades tank. He expects us to take exams that have multiple calculations with a dinky calculator and expects us to do complicated calculations. We only have 50mins to complete this exam overloaded with complications. Take it with someone and somewhere else!
Took Evolutionary Biology with him. It was a flipped course: homework during lecture and lecture at home. Clear expectations from him. Enjoyed this class even though it's a lot of work. Before the final I had a C and I came out of there with a final grade of B. Memorize the phylogenetic tree of life. A's are possible if you're consistent.
This class boils down to being able to replicate the problems done on the homeworklabs with a worthless calculator on the exams. Even if you know the material, if you cannot do it quickly and with limited tools (that calculator is maybe worth $1.50) you will not do well on the exams. Studying older exams is more useful than attending lecture.
Difficult course. He is passionate about evolution but doesn't really care about your grade. The math is ridiculous here, class average was a 46%. the final is worth 32% basically your whole grade rides on the final exam
The review below mine is really misleading. Yes the class average on exam 3 was low but it got curved up to 80 percent meaning everyone got over 30 free points. I got an A with an 87% because he also scaled down grade thresholds in the end. Study old exams religiously and you will be fine. Everything is curved except essays.
Funny and smart person, but not a good teacher. Make u to use basic calculator.. This is a CSU, not Yale! So he teaches at a wrong place and speaks to the wrong audience !
Awful teacher
A passionate professor who loves his work. But not a good at constructing a lecture exam His hw and lectures are easy but his exams questions are crazy. Trust me. It's true. If you are not genius but hard-working, DON'T Take his lecture cuz he likes to challenge people with trick questions. Literally. "If a value is here, what's it" plz answer.
Honestly Carter is one of the best profs I have taken so far. Ya the class is pretty difficult, but that is because the level of the course demands that. I see a lot of reviews whining about how tough his exams are, but he curves so much that the scores are fair. He is so intelligent and he always gives us practical applications to the subject.
I got a C in this course because the material was difficult & I really should've put in more work, but I really appreciated his passion/teaching. He gives you all the tools/sources you need to get a good grade in the class but it's really up to you. He's a tough grader, but you definitely learn though he makes you work for it.
I have improved on my math skills along the way, so i was surprised he could make me do well on problem solving. He is tough, but he makes the concepts easy to understand and follow. I believe this is one of my favorite class.
I really loved this class! If you're good at math, this class should be a piece of cake for you. However, you still have to put in effort just like with any other class. Make sure you do really well on the first three exams and lab because there's a chance you can to skip out on the final! Overall, Carter is very fair and you will learn a lot.
No, just no. It's ridiculous he makes you do all the calculations on a mini calculator and that's a complete waste of time. The course is fairly easy not because he's good at explaining it (he reads off the slides) but because its only equations and you substitute (equat. are given on tests). It's just the calculator thing that screws u over
One of the most enlightening courses you will take at CSULB. If you dog on his teaching style it's probably because you're not that smart (Sorry but it's the truth). The time constraint and level of difficulty of the exams is truly ridiculous, but don't worry because there's a fat curve for each. Using the tiny calculator does suck.
Very interesting course. Very stressful course. So many biological tests to study, but there are around 15+ point curves for each exam! Around 11-13 hard HW. PRACTICE USING FOUR FUNCTION CALCULATOR. Give yourself one-two weeks to DO ALL PRACTICE EXAMS. Study for lab. Weekly lab quizzes, two major quizzes, and two midterms for lab. Passionate
Dr. Carter is one of the most brilliant professors I have ever had. He is very helpful when you visit him during office hours, and tells hilarious (and relevant) stories during lecture. I learned a lot in both his biostats and evolution course. Please take him, you WILL get smarter!!!
This class is rough!! Effort is mandatory if you expect to pass. HE is very clear about what he expects and what to see on exams. He posts old exams from multiple years back. Passing Calc is not an indicator of how you'll do in this class. Only draw back is the very limited time on exams and very basic calculators with very involved problems.
People really hyped this class up more than it should've been. Pay attention and study 1 or 2 days before an exam, USE THE OLD EXAMS!! lots of multiple choice are repeated, dont underestimate. Labs are basically knowing how to use R and excel, easy peasy. I took this during summer by the way!
Pretty funny dude but also pretty tough class. All old exams are on his website but the most important thing about the exam is time management. 50 minutes is not enough to do stats work on a kindergarten calculator so practice that if you can. Took lab with Amanda and she's awesome, totally dumbs all of it down.
Dr. Carter is one of the strictest, most difficult professors ever. You will struggle, but you will learn a great deal. Exams are very tough; however, all you need to do is practice. The small calculators are a pain, but doable. Learn time managing strategies for exams. He is super helpful if you have questions! I really enjoyed this class.
Carter's class is without a doubt challenging. Biostats isn't easy and you definitely have to put the work in. He only allows 4-function calculators and the exams are very rushed. Labs aren't graded but the Lab quizzes and exams are. My biggest problem was that you have no idea what your grade is (because everything is curved) until the final week.
Dr. Carter's lectures are really fast-paced. He zooms by 50 mins in a blink of an eye! His exams are quite difficult, but if you practice most of the old exams on his website, you'll be fine! I found that following along with his YouTube videos as you do the practice problems was very helpful. My main problem was the 4-function calculators...
This class was hard, it seems like they make it way harder than it needs to be. Given the importance of the subject matter. He's funny, and his lectures are interesting. Though, the tests and lab quizzes are I feel are inherently built for you to fail.
Let put this clear, if you are a Bio major this professor literally cares for you. He makes his courses hard so you can see the hard obstacles you will face in grad school. Suck it up and learn.
one of the hardest professors, get ready to spend more time than average. His tests are challengings, even if you studied he goes deep into the material. Weekly homework in Biostats and weekly quizzes for evolution. What is amazing about him is resources: old exams back from 2015, online videos recorded by him and focused lec notes. NO EC
for everyone that likes carter, im sorry but man this dude is rough. I went through Calc at csulb and got an A but stats is something else. Material is easy, homework is easy- tests are insane. 50 minutes to do an entire statistics exam with a four function calculator is so cruel. try do exponents and insane formulas in one of these and youll cry.
Biostats is hard in general, but its not so bad. He has old exams on his website for practice. I recommend timing yourself with previous exams because during the real exam in class, you'll only have 50 minutes and you won't have enough time to spend more than a minute on one single question. Take advantage of lab slides and office hours.
Absolutely awful. I must admit I hate math, but this was absolutely miserable. TAKE AT A DIFFERENT COLLEGE AT ALL COSTS. I had a 3.8 GPA through undergrad so I'm not like dumb, but this class wrecked me. He has decent lectures and super smart, but absolutely sucks at explaining concepts. He means well but sucks. Felt like I barely learned a thing.
I did old exams repeatedly, watched his videos, attended all lectures, but still barely got a B and I ha a 3.8GPA. You can do all these things, but if you don't understand what you are doing, it is useless. He's way too wordy when explaining, sucks at explaining, and I think is mentally incapable of explaining concepts in a straight forward manner
Avoid at all cost. Kinda good at lecturing, but terrible slides and does a pathetic job interpreting what they mean. i believe he may not understand what it's like to be a non math brained person, because everything to him was so simple. i really wish i had taken stats elsewhere. i believe i would have gotten a better understanding and grade.
Took him during the summer. He gives out a lot of resources like past exams. He curves each test based on class averages. His exams are just like old exams, just the same concepts with different numbers. He also does Tophat (similar to iClicker) so come to class. He can come off rude, but deep down he cares.
This class was not easy and I spend most of my time asking my lab instructor for help because she explained it a lot more clear than he was able to. I wished he understood that math is a language that not everyone knows like he does. The time on the exams and the calculator youre force to use are a joke.
The examples and concepts given in the short lecture are so dumbed down compared to the material on the actual assignments and exams. That's probably the biggest issue with this class. It's almost like it's set up for you to fail. Regardless, the past exam problems he puts up for practice are EVERYTHING.
He is not a good professor.
I took this class during spring 2021. His lectures are uploaded to youtube and he literally just reads the slides off the powerpoint during the lecture. He also has a monotone voice that removes any sort of engagement. The examples he gives during lecture are so dumbed down to the point where I had no idea what I was doing on the homework.
His assignments are more complex than his lecture examples. This class is super tough, you really have to be on top and studying. His practice exams are key for exams and are difficult. 4 tests, lowest gets dropped. I was mostly going to my TA for help. He curved alot. Overall, he's way better than johnson.. glad I retook this class with carter.
He is so pretentious and an awful teacher. He teaches to his tests. Study tests from previous semesters to figure out what he expects and practice doing all of the math by hand or using a very basic calculator. You will have to reteach yourself the subject after you take this class if you need to use this material in the real world.
Dr. Carter is by far, one of the best professors I've had. I've taken him before for Bio 260. He was the one professor who ever explained the topic in a way I could understand. His class is easy to pass as long as you do the work. Also, you won't pass the quizzes if you don't watch the lectures.
Took him for Summer '21, his class was easier than Prof. Pacheco in my opinion. Lectures are on youtube (pleiotropy channel), he curves exams, provides past exams and fallacies/misuses of biostats to study. Used separate website than BB Exams are roughly 40 questions, 25 MCs and the rest is calculation sets
had him for bio260 his class is hard but doable way better than Professor Pacheco although I got a high B and was close to an A but I still would recommend him very respected and nice professor ! do well on your first and second exam. manage your time for the exams. I ran out of time for the second exam.
Discussion board is easy points-DO THEM! Quizzes are weekly, based on lecture and are detailed so take good notes. Do practice exams, esp the calculations bc those are extremely hard compared to his lecture examples. He curves so you do have a chance to get an A but youll definitely have to work for it
Professor Carter is probably the best biostats professor there is, but this class is literally so difficult for no reason. His lectures are just restating his online videos, and he goes over no examples during class time, so it's not really beneficial to go. His tests and assignment are difficult, so be prepared to study outside on your own.
I struggled in this class and when I went to office hours to discuss different studying habits, Dr. Carter told me that I was struggling because I was a kinesiology major and none of my classes were difficult. He's very demeaning and I didn't feel comfortable asking him questions so I would go to the TA for help.
I really liked Professor Carter! All the lectures are posted on Youtube. Everything is super organized and easy to find on the class website. Class consists of 12 homework assignments and 4 exams total, but he'll only use the grades from your best 3 exams. CURVES EVERYTHING! Lab consists of homework, 2 quizzes, an exam, and a project.
Great guy, not super helpful during office hours Class is optional, nothing is posted on beach board has a separate website 12 hwks & 4 exams 4th exam cumulative only best 3 count likely curved may curve hwk No lecture quizzes Provides past exams Lab: hwk, 2 quizzes, exam, & project. If you struggle with maths I would recommend a different teacher
He's the best professor I've encountered ever! His tests are fair. Watch youtube videos and make sure you go over all the practice questions he posts because THEY MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE! He's really out there to ensure your success so utilize his office hours if you have questions or send him an email, he's usually pretty fast at replying:)!!
I took Professor Carter last semester. Homework is weekly and can be done usually within an hour. There are four exams that are all curved considerably. The fourth exam is cumulative and can replace the lowest test grade. Lecture is not required and his website and Youtube videos give you all the info you need for exams. He curves a lot.
I went to class almost every day and watched all of his lecture videos but always did awful on the tests. The tests are really hard and I never felt like everything we did in class did not prepare us at all. I struggled a lot but hopefully I pass. He is a fun lecturer but that doesn't really help at all for his exam questions. Mandatory Attendance
Open note exams you take online. Has previous exams for practice. Flipped format course (watch lectures online, practice problems in person). Quizzes are basic things you would memorize, but exams are more intensive and require good conceptualization skills. Curves exams; a percentage of class will always get As. Overall a good and nerdy professor.
This is such a great and highly interactive course due to its flipped system, where you watch the videos on your own time and then as a class discuss the content learned. Honestly, the third portion of the course makes this class hard but he curves a lot! An A is definitely possible. He's very approachable and funny.
Take this class with Dr. Carter if you hate yourself and want to take the hardest exams you have ever seen. The assignments are ok but take quite a bit of time to complete. Everything is curved so it does even out a bit and this class is notoriously difficult but it should not be Dr. Carter's level of difficulty.
there is literally no way to get a good grade on an exam no matter how hard you study and how many hours of tutoring you get. you don't see your grades on canvas so you can't calculate anything. he does drop the lowest exam but not helpful when he is so harsh on the hw grading too. good luck if you take this course.
His homework and tests are extremely time-consuming and difficult to complete. Although he has well-made explanatory videos for the material, you still have to compute many long and over-complicated equations by hand. If you're not great or fast at math, or don't have lots of time to watch videos over and over, do not take!
Provides you with a lot of great resources, including all past exams to study off of. I just wish he took partial credit for his exams and let you know your grade throughout the semester. Possible to get an A if you work through the practice exams. Love that this class is so straightforward.
The assignments are not too difficult but the exams are extremely so. He gives past exams as study guides but they aren't that helpful. The class is heavily curved due to how hard it is to pass these exams, they are long and require lots of calculations with not enough time to do so for most students.
They has many lecture videos, but they have so much information in each one of them. It made it harder to study because half of the questions on the test were very specific. I did appreciate that, although the class grade was very test heavy, Dr. Carter gave a very helpful grade curve. I'd find a good note-taking strategy to study for the exams.
Assignments and exams aren't too difficult if you watch the lectures and use the other resources he provides, but they were time consuming. Exams make up 60% of your grade and doesn't input grades but provides them in data tables and charts (I assumed it's part of the course), but I didn't really have an issue. Does reply to emails quickly though.
Doesn't lecture during class time. He posts 10+ recorded lecture videos every week that take forever to watch and hardly teach you anything. Weekly quizzes make NO sense and he only gives you 10 minutes for 10 questions. Wastes class time doing pointless, kindergarten level group activities. Easily the worst experience I have had in a class so far.
Tests and quizzes are very specific and difficult especially with the time limit. The Youtube videos are sometimes super long and there are multiple each week. Definitely wish there were more detailed notes and resources available.
If you miss 1 exam you're done, regardless of how well you do otherwise.
