Great lecture, very engaged. She is very fun to listen to and gives bonus points often! Many extra credit oppritunities!
I had Mathews for lab. Yikes. She talks for AT LEAST an hour before letting us begin the lab, so DON'T expect to ever get out early. She is not the easiest grader and there are two assignments associated with every lab, a pre lab, and a post lab. Some classes do not have a post lab. It is a large work load and she is condescending.
She likes to talk alot but overall is a pretty good teacher. At first its a bit difficult but once you know what she is looking for then it gets easier. She gives a few extra credit things.
She talks A LOT. Her tests are pretty difficult. You really have no idea what to expect, even if she tells you what to study for.
Pretty easy, be in class and take notes. online assignments and quizzes. she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Greatness !!!!!!!!!!!! Challenging at times, but interesting. Helps with anything and motivates you when you feel like you're completely lost. She's everything you can ask for in a college teacher !!!
Dr. Mathews is a fantastic lab teacher. She takes the education of her students very seriously. She challenged us to be the best scientists possible. Dr. Mathews is willing to help with any classwork/homework and prepares well for her tests. Would recommend her to anyone who values his or her education in the sciences.
Dr. Mathews is a GREAT teacher! She keeps class lively and interesting, and she is very respectful and understanding whenever you come to her with a concern. I would highly recommend taking this class.
I did not hate this teacher but she was not the worst ever. Her work load is a lot and she talks - a lot but it's obvious she loves what she does. I would not recommend her to my worst enemy, however.
Dr. Mathews is an excellent professor. She knows what she is talking about and clearly enjoys the subject. She is willing to meet anytime to help with outside work. She talks a lot but is that really a bad thing? Really helped with learning the lecture material. I have taken her for both BIOL 2107L and BIOL 2108L.
Mathews is a pretty good teacher. Her lectures are a DRY version of the quizzes and test so you need to read the text in order to pass her test. Most of her test questions come from the quizzes and the Learning curve. If you don't come to class you won't pass! She loves to talk but her lectures are enjoyable
I hate this professor! She gives crazy amount of both class work and homework. Her test and quizzes are extremely hard and when you talk to her she ttys to prove you wrong and make you seem dumb. I felt lie a child always cutting and pasting pictures and she takes off points for every little thing. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HER!!
Dr. Mathews is a nice professor, but he lectures are extremely long and boring. She at least tries to get students involved and is very enthusiastic about her work. Come to class ready to participate and take a lot of notes. The tests are very difficult though, but if you go to her office hours she will try and help you do better. Recommended.
Her class is interesting and she is pretty funny. Know the material for the tests they are kinda hard mainly because of the answer options like all of the above, both a and b, or none of the above. But she is a passionate teacher and will work with you to get a good grade. Take her class!!
She doesn't let you out early and never cancels classes, but overall her class is simple.
Take good notes. Very helpful in office hours
The classes isnt that bad, weekly homework, you have to buy the online access code, you need a clicker, and shes pretty clear. She teaches way more then what she actully test you on, and shes not specific enough about whats actully going to be on the test
Dr. Mathews is a nice person and cares about her students. GO TO CLASS... clicker points every day and if you do not go, you will not pass. Test are okay once you get the hang of them. She covers way more in class then she tests you over. Go to her office hours to look over your test and she will give you tips on how to better study for her class.
For a lecture class, it's very interactive. COME TO CLASS. A lot of the material that's on the test is not in the book. Those clicker questions add up. You get full points for questions you get right and half points for questions you miss. And then if you miss class, you click score will be low. Read the textbook before lecture so you can keep up.
I personally enjoy her lectures, but it does feel like the same information over and over again. She's got a nice personality that is funny. Attendance by clicker questions (I guess you don't have to shop up, but its your grade), reading guides and quizzes due every weekend, 75% of the time material covered in class will be on your test. Study.
She is a very nice person but her class is extremely hard. She does power points in class but will not post them online or email them to you even if you're sick. Going to class is a must if you want to have a clue of what's going on. The tests are very hard. I've never worked so hard for a B.
She tries to organize a lot material in a way that will be understandable. Tests are a little confusing. She gives many opportunities to receive points.
Dr. Mathews was easy and hard. All the work was pretty easy until the tests. You are not really sure what will be on the test. She words them hard. Study your butt off. Lecture can be fun sometimes but are really long. Come to class she does clicker questions and the points can help you go from a D to C if you come to class.
Dr. Mathews is the best! I was a little unsure about taking her class at the beginning of the semester but she ended up being my favorite professor. She is very passionate about the subject and teaching. She gives ample opportunities to make good grades. If you show up, participate, and put in a little effort you should do fine.
She is a super nice lady, but she is also very confusing. Whenever I went to office hours she was very helpful and explained everything very well. Mastering biology was my life saver in studying for her tests. The wording of her questions is super confusing, but she curves the tests some. Would take her again, but be ready to work hard.
Professor Mathews is a fantastic Bio 1 professor. She is super nice and helpful. She is always ready to help any student that shows her that they are truly trying. If you are not great at applying complex info, you will struggle on the tests, but you shouldn't really be taking her classes if that's the case. Overall great prof, would take again!
Dr. Mathew is just the sweetest but she doesn't curve grades. However she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Studying is a must if you want to pass the class.
Dr. Mathews is pretty clear cut during lecture and gives a lot of supplemental activity. The homework and quizzes are not really reflective of the tests since they are a little bit harder. She offers some extra credit so GO TO CLASS. Make sure you keep homework grade high because it's weighted like an exam. Use the learning objectives for tests!
You can tell Dr. Mathews is passionate about the subject, and her interactive lectures make the huge class feel more personal. She will remember your name, regardless of the fact that there are 200 students in the room. To do well on tests, you have to study- no way around that. There are many graded activities to help even out the grade.
Such a nice lady. She is passionate about the subject and makes class entertaining. Really cares about students. Her tests won't be hard if you study. Does clicker questions and extra credit.
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Mathews is an okay professor, but she can be very rude. I tried to go to her office for help but she made me feel so dumb that I didnt even bother going back to her. I'd highly recommend not skipping class because clicker questions are apart of your final grade.
DO THE WORK OUTSIDE OF CLASS AND THE EXTRA CREDIT. It will seriously help you I failed the test and it pulled my grade from a "C" to a "B" but just barely. For the tests I never found the reading guides helpful mostly mastering biology was. You HAVE to attend SI and her lectures there's no doubt. It was indeed the hardest class I've ever had
Dr. Mathews's class is a hard class, but she makes it interesting. There are several chances for extra credit throughout the semester. There is a reading quiz every week, and you HAVE to read the chapter to do well on it. DO THE READING GUIDES. Also- go to class because clicker questions are important and there are in class assignments.
Dr. Mathews is a nice person, but the Biology 2107 Lab is a hard class. She gives a lot of homework/pre-labs weekly and can grade it pretty tough. The lab notebook and attendance counts for 100 points total, so you need to be there every time. The quizzes at the beginning of lab are pretty tough, so make sure you read the lab well before class.
She really understands how difficult biology is for most people. She will try her hardest to help you out but you must make the effort for it too. She learns so many students names, which is rare in lecture halls. She assigns most of the entire chapters for homework but adds a guide to help you process all the information
She was nice
Dr. Matthews is very passionate about teaching environmental biology. Her lectures are interesting and easy to pay attention to. I recommend going to every class (or as many as you can) because there are clicker questions and that could possibly boost your grade. Tests are difficult and she is tends to run behind on schedule.
I like Dr. Mathews, but her teaching style isn't for me. I didn't do well on any of the exams and some of her questions are trick questions. I Got an A in Bio 2107 and I'm definitely going to have to retake this course. You're better off coming to class for the clicker points/quizzes and then teaching yourself from the book at home.
Shes alright, she tries to be different by trying to be more interactive in the class, I can't really tell if it works or not, it has its charm. You have to be there everyday because of the clicker questions that are for credit. Tests aren't too tough, never studied and made high Cs and low Bs on them. Decent amount of homework, not tough though.
Whatever you do avoid taking her class. She teaches her lecture class like a bunch of 2nd graders and she loves to give people an attitude whenever you ask her a question. She has a weird sarcastic sense of humor that is not funny and she craves attention from her class. Also, her tests are super hard and application based. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Yes she was a hard professor but she makes you work for your grade. You HAVE TO STUDY or you will not pass her test. This is the hardest class I have taken at southern so far but it is possible to get an A or B. Don't take her unless you really want to earn your grade bc she is very hard. Very sweet and helpful thought so there is good & bad.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Mathews. Sometimes she seemed really cool and other times she had sort of an attitude. It was weird. Tests are stupid hard and minimally reflexive of all material that she goes over in class. You have to do a lot of outside reading and self-taught learning.
She's student oriented and makes sure that you understand the material you are given.
Get ready to study. I loved this class but it is HARD. You really have to put in the time and effort. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does daily clicker questions so it is important to go. This class is all about application. Dr. Mathews is really caring though and wants to help you if you're struggling which I think says a lot for a lecture.
Walking into Dr. Mathew's class, I was extremely nervous. I knew the course was going to be difficult, but with her help and guidance, I made an A in the class. She goes above and beyond to help students in any way she can, but she expects you to put in the work. She genuinely cares about her students and provides you every opportunity to succeed.
Ms. Mathews wants you to understand the material instead of memorizing everything. Go to her office hours if you are struggling. GO TO CLASS!!!!! She gives out so many extra credit opportunities. IClicker points are golden!!!!! The tests are application based.
Dr. Matthews was a solid professor, she isn't going to give you an A because it was a general bio class. She makes your work for it. There are so many ways to earn points in the class as long as you show up. Inquizitive assignments, chapter review quizzes and CLICKER POINTS!!!
She's a great professor! There are tons of opportunities for extra credit and she keeps the class decently engaged to have 200+ students in one room. She uses clicker questions for just about everything in class, and inquisitive out of class. She doesn't take attendance, but she does clicker questions everyday. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. Mathews is an amazing Professor who is extremely willing to help. She is extremely approachable and has such a heart for her students, her job, and Biology. LOVE HER
Dr. Mathews is a really dope professor. She makes biology really understandable and practical for her students. She's incredibly nice and is always willing to help you be successful in her class. There are plenty of opportunities to earn points in her class, just make sure you're ready to work. It can be overwhelming if you're unprepared.
She does several extra credit opportunities but If your looking for an easy A this isn't the class to take. I had to work for my A and I honestly didn't think I was gonna get it. But she gives lots of study resources to prepare you for her test. Her test require critical thinking and require you to apply what we learned in class.
The first day I stepped into Dr.M's class, I was shocked at how much you could tell she not only loved her students but also the material she was teaching. However, YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR YOU GRADE. I came to find that the test were pretty tough, very application based. Memorization is not going to help you one bit! GO TO CLASS! Participate!
She is nice and will def help you if you go to her office hours. She'll go over your missed test questions and try her best to help. She'll even help teach you how to study for her class. BUT YOU HAVE TO STUDY. Tests are really hard. And clicker points matter so much! STUDY!! You don't get the points if you miss the questions. It starts to add up
Professor Mathews sucks. Her tests are ridiculously hard and the only people I know that do well in this class have already learned the topics discussed. Exams are application based and worded in a difficult manner. Everything is graded by accuracy not participation. Good luck.
Attendance is not mandatory, so to say, but if you don't show up then you basically will not pass. She does in class activities and clicker points every class period. She also lives for participation, so be ready to "talk it out".
I hate to be rude, but I could not stand this professor. I always felt like she was a tad bit too snobby and arrogant while teaching this course. She was very belittling and did not do much to help in any of the student's success. Would definitely not take this professor again.
If you are looking for an easy A, do not take Dr. Mathews' class. However, if you aren't lazy and want to learn I HIGHLY recommend her. The material is difficult, but Dr. Matthews does a great job explaining the material and actually wants you to succeed. She understands that students have a lot going on and will help you as much as she can.
Awesome teacher! I learned so much in this class. Dr. Mathews is very caring & makes learning fun. However, this class was not easy. You HAVE to study for tests & don't just mean the night before. If you want a good grade you need to start studying 2 weeks in advance. Tests are application based, but if you truly know the material you will do well.
lots of clicker questions, study for the tests, has chapter review quizzes before each test, inquisitive is where you learn everything, not in class
Dr. Mathews will definitely make you work for your grade in her class. She loves and I mean loves to lecture so it's in your best interest to go to class but missing a class or two won't hurt. And be sure to READ, READ, READ!!!! She has a sense of humor so her class isn't boring.
She is nice as a person but she was not my favorite professor. It was a hard class as well. Just be prepared to come to every class because if you do not you will most definitely not pass.
Dr. Mathews is really fun. As long as you do the work in both lab and lecture, you will pass. She will see your effort and acknowledge it. She is a tough grader in lab, but, as long as you follow her feedback, you will pass lab. In lecture, she gives out some easy and tough clicker questions. Apply yourself!!! Apply, apply, apply!!! ^-^
It is a large lecture class, but she did a good job of making the class feel smaller. She has a great sense of humor, so lectures aren't boring. There are a lot of clicker questions, but you get to choose how you want to be graded. Tests are application based and the final is cumulative. Overall, a great professor who cares about her students.
Attendance isn't mandatory but highly recommended. There are A LOT. of clicker questions that are application level. If you miss class, there are plenty of opportunities to make up points. Tests are difficult, but if you take advantage of the tools given to you (textbook, clicker questions, handouts), you should do well. You do have to study!!!
I hate to say this because I had high hopes for this class, but I want future students to be prepared before signing up. Her exams are application-based and difficult. I learned none of the test material in her class lectures. All of the material that was on the test was from the online assignmentsand other things that I had to google. Good luck:)
Dr. Mathews was great, she really cares about Biology and wants everyone to do well but this class isn't for everyone so don't be discouraged by the negative comments. Yes, she makes you work for your grade but welcome to college! Lots of clicker questions and opportunities to makeup for missed points and exams are hard but she makes lectures fun!
Lab was challenging and sometimes overwhelming but Dr. Mathews made it so much fun each week. She was always open to answering questions and helping each table throughout the lab. There were lab quizzes each week and 2 exams (midterm and final). Don't wait until the night before to do your prefab and homework or you'll be up for hours :)
She was not the worst Professor ever. She genuinely cares if your learning the material not about the grades you receive. She grades in a way that helps people who are horrible test takers (like me). As long as you do good on lecture prep, mastering, and do every extra credit assignment you will be fine. The test are hard af tho.
She is a great professor, but she will make you work for it. You will have a lot of homework and in-class activities especially clicker questions so it would be best to attend class everyday. Overall nice funny teacher, she also gives lots of extra credit.
Im making this rating based on my in person exp. rather than everything that happened after covid. She is hands down one of the worst teachers Ive ever had. I have an A in her class as of right now, no thanks to her. I had to go to different professors to learn. She talks down on you, laughs when you dont understand, and randomly puts in grades.
She's the WORST prof. i've had. She's stingy with her knowledge and makes us teach ourselves. Just accused our whole class of cheating online and won't give us our test grades. Brb changing my bio major
Dr. Mathews is the worst professor I've ever had. She assigned seats in a 150 person lecture. She never grades assignments on time and will grade heavy. Clicker questions are asked daily, but they may not even be about what you have learned yet. Her exams are much harder than the actual class. She doesn't give clear answers when you ask questions.
Mathews is hands down the worst professor I've ever met. She never gives an actual answer to questions or the answers to clicker questions. You can go into her class knowing the material and fail every test bc of her wording. If you can't answer a 5 part clicker question in 10 secs in ABC order, you will fail. BTW assigned seats in a 150 lecture.
She is hands down the worst professor Ive ever had. Every time Ive emailed her she wont give me an answer and tell me to read the same ppt/ book that I just said I didnt understand. I would never take her class ever again. I would basically avoid it like how you avoid Covid-19
Dr. Mathews is decent. Do not take her if you are not prepared to do work. Her tests are hard and her lectures are practically pointless. Attend class because she does a ton of clicker questions, but don't just depend on lecture notes to study from for the exams. READ READ READ your book. She is notorious for pulling random questions from it.
These test are the hardest I have EVER taken. Ive always been a A student, but the tests are the hardest things Ive done. Clicker points and Lecture peeps save your grade. Make sure to go to office hours as you will get extra credit most likely. 4 exams in total. Make sure to go to every class for the clicker points and every activity counts!!
Dr. Matthews is great person, but this class is ridiculously hard. These exams and quizzes are the hardest I have ever taken. There are 4 exams and 3 quizzes. Make sure to go to SI for extra credit and every class so you can get the clicker points. If you want a A in this course, you are gonna have to work extremely hard. Great person, ok professor
You would go in the class knowing everything and then fail the test because of the way she words it. She didn't even round a 69.8 to a 70... Honestly she is a nice person, but not a good professor so if there is another option other than her then go for it...
Prof Mathews class was hard but I think that is no matter who you take. If you pay attention and read, you can pass the class. The clicker points help but you have to know the right answer to get the points. I did better at the end of the semester because I used her flashcards and ppts to study. You have to study and do the quizzes to boost grade.
She puts her lecture classes in groups for the whole year. You take quizzes as a group. Clicker ?s count! ?s on the tests were much harder than the info we learned in class. Tough grader, but also very specific about what she wants. The people who got bad grades in her lab didnt follow her rubrics to the tee. DONT take her xtra credit for granted!
Terrible teacher and doesnt even care that shes bad.
Shes really not a bad professor. Her choice of words can be confusing sometimes when it comes to tests and quizzes, but if you understand the concepts youll pass the class. Go to SI sessions and office hours, it helps.
She is not a bad professor. Her answers for the tests are in the lectures. Watch the lectures and take detailed notes and you're good for the tests. Do the inquizitives till you get a 100 and do well on the quizzes. I didn't get an A on one test but the other things that I could control I did well on and it got me my A. Don't be lazy and u good
I HATE sciences, but I didn't necessarily hate this class. I took it online and even still, she made an effort to engage with us and was quick to help. She is a lovely human and great teacher, but the tests are incredibly hard. Honestly, my friend who just passed the TEAS couldn't help me with a lot of questions. You get a lot of cushion grades tho
She is a great teacher! BUT Bio Majors ONLY. And If u know you're good @studying and good @ application-based classes (she expects you to connect the dots on your own.) And you're faster than the speed of light when it comes to answerin questions. (Clicker ?s are 1min and she talks during) I'm none of these.. so I'm going to fail. Good Luck!
You might fail her tests. I've gone into the tests pretty confident about my knowledge and she would word the questions confusingly. She doesn't just ask the question (what is this? What's its function) directly. She'll beat around. (So if THIS ORGANISM *no picture* has a symbiotic relaysh w/ algae and ___. what is it?) I'm CS IDC so extra
She is a solid choice. You get to choose your grade plan out of 3 choices. She does a lot of clicker questions in lectures. Tests are semi-hard but if you study you should be good. Lectures are entertaining and she makes a lot of jokes. She is always willing to help and is very accessible out of class.
Professor Mathews is one of the most challenging professors I have ever had. The tests are extremely hard and you have to take them in a limited amount of time. The lectures do not help and you pretty much have to teach yourself the whole course. Make sure to do the clicker questions and mastering assignments because that is what saves your grade.
Dr. Mathews was a good professor. You got to choose your grade plan at the beginning of the semester. In the grade plan I choose, there were a lot of polling questions and homework assignments for every chapter we covered. The tests were a little difficult but if you study you should be fine. My only complaint is that there were point caps.
The way that she words questions and notes is extremely difficult to understand. She doesn't care to listen to student feedback/issues with the course. She doesn't ever give enough time to answer daily clicker questions. She'll say one thing at the beginning of the semester and completely change it halfway through and when asked about it, denies it
I LOVE Dr. Mathews. I personally dont do well in science but her class is so much fun and shes really funny. She lets you choose your own grading plan and her work is extremely easy as well as her exams if you pay attention. Attendance isnt mandatory but definitely go or youll miss clicker question points! I would take her again 100%
Do not take this class. Mathews is a terrible teacher. She will say we are doing one thing, and do the complete opposite. She is absolutely no help if you have to miss class for any reason, and if you do pick grade plan two. The extra work for grade plan 1 is no help.
Professor Matthews was okay. don't slack the tests she gives are pretty tricky and attendance is very important. There are clicker points, which can only be gained if you attend class. They add up and are actually worth a good chunk of your grade, they are graded on accuracy too so make sure to get the question right if u want the point for it.
Love professor Matthews as a person hate her as a teacher. Her test are completely too hard and covers a lot of topics in s short amount of time. She does have a lo of homework i would say 3-4 hrs of homework a week. You definitely have to take active notes while in class to pass her test. She does do extra credit assignments she did 3 this semeste
I loved Dr. Mathews! She truly cares about her students and gives you many opportunities to succeed in her class. She makes her lectures fun and explains concepts clearly. I would 100% take her again for any science-related class! My only complaint was that there was a good bit of homework but nothing impossible or too difficult.
Make sure you do well on the prep work. GO TO EVERY SI SESSION AND DO EVERY MASTERING ASSIGNMENT (make sure to get 90s or higher) , youll understand better. Quizzes are a bit easy, tests are more difficult. Overall amazing teacher would take her class again 100%, passed with an A. Class was really fun and very interactive
Dr. Mathews was amazing! Her lectures keep your attention and her iclicker questions are simple and not designed to trick you. (also they are not graded for accuracy) Her tests reflect what you learn in class and the SI sessions were very helpful. The prepwork was the only tough part, some of the questions didn't seem to reflect the module content
Didn't use an actual textbook, used Inquisitive. There are 2 grade plans to choose from (one-just exams/one- everything). Dr. Mathews will provide you with learning objectives for every exam; and if you study them and go through them, then you are sure to make A's on the exams. She is also very helpful and accessible. She wants to see you succeed!
This course is lecture and textbook heavy. Completing prep work aided in the discussions that occurred in lecture. Iclicker is used everyday and is graded. She words the questions in a way for students to apply the concepts being taught. In other words, DO YOUR PREPWORK!! The learning objectives are your "study guide" for quizzes and tests.
Lectures only. Teaches like a middle school teacher. Learned very little even though she gave tons of homework. She doesn't answer any questions clearly and will get extremely defensive if you say anything even slightly negative about her teaching style or the exam questions.
You do have to commit time outside of class in order to succeed. There is prepwork weekly that opens on Friday and it must be done by Monday. If you actively do the prepwork you will do fine. Uses clicker and will grade some of them, so if you skip class on a day she grades them, you will get a zero. SI is pretty much mandatory.
she's nice to certain people, and I don't mind going to her class but I mostly go for points. she does a ton of polls and her quizzes and test and so hard and I attended all the classes, SI study session weekly, and do all the prepwork and homework. I wouldn't say I wouldn't reccoment but she's okay
She is a horrible professor. She is very self centered and is one of those professors that believes only she is right. Studying for her tests are so hard and they are nothing like the material in class. Do not take this class if you can help it. The tests are hard and most of your points. She answers emails moderately fast. Do the inquisitives.
Mathews makes you teach yourself. If you're not good at chemistry don't take this class has 75% chemistry and 25% biology. Make sure to participate in class with the clicker questions because thats how you get your grade. GO TO SI. I didn't go and I wish I would have. You can get a lot of points from SI. Also she isn't very approachable.
Let me preface by saying this Dr. Matthews is extremely nice and is willing to help you if you make you attend her office hours and email her. However, this was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken in my life despite attending as many office hours as I could the exams were very difficult and didn't reflect what was in the textbook nor notes
I do not recommend this teacher if you struggle to learn things on your own. She gives prep work before all new chapters but does not go over them. The lectures have nothing to do with the prep work so you will have to understand. She does many clicker questions which do help your grade sometimes, but some of the questions are hard.
Even though I made an A due to seeing the same info from other science classes, I still do not like her teaching methods. The inquisitive homework barely helped anyone. She does not provide actual notes during lecture. Review quizzes helped a little, but not much. The material isn't hard, but get ready to teach yourself. Avoid this professor. -_-
Very frustrating teaching style. Very short and rude with students about questions pertaining to material
This class will have groups and it WILL affect your grade. She insists the class is only for those who plan to work in science fields. She expects you to remember chemistry info chemistry students don't even have to. Majority of learning is outside of class b/c she barely teaches & then passive aggressively make you feel dumb for not knowing info.
She lets you choose your own grade plan based off your personal life. She gives real live examples to connect with terminology. Gives handouts and good notes. Everything she teaches in lecture is on a test. No surprise questions. Honestly one of my favorites.
This professor was absolutely horrible!!! She is EXTREMELY self centered and passive aggressive and short with students. Her exams are very difficult and not much like the reviews or lectures at all. Attendance is taken in clicker points, in which you have to get right in order to be counted. Be prepared to teach yourself!
One of the worst professors I have had! She is extremely narcissistic and is not helpful at all. Her lectures are very different from the exams, and the reviews are as well. The grading criteria is very unclear and hard to understand. Don't bother reaching out about anything, she will just redirect you to the syllabus, which doesn't help.
Dr. Matthews wasn't the worst, but she also wasn't the best. You didn't know your grade in the class 99% of the time and she got distracted in her lectures and went off topic making it hard to focus. Inquizitives were a big part in how you learned the material and she was always 3 days behind the inquizitives you did.
She's lecture and prep work heavy. I would rate her a solid 7/10
She is nice, but she talks A LOT. Sometimes she wouldn't even get to the actual lesson until the last 10-15 minutes of class. LOTS of inquizitives, and her tests don't really reflect the lectures too much.
My lab leader was Alex McFarland and he was awesome. This was my second time taking this course and it was much easier this time around thanks to him.
Spent WEEKS getting into "groups"- yes groups in a 200+ person lecture hall- and only worked within them a handful of times. She talks a lot so expect class to ACTUALLY start 15 minutes after your scheduled meeting time. And don't you DARE start packing up when class is over, she wants to dismiss you.. She's a better fit for 5th grade.
Expect to teach yourself most of the material as she cannot stay focused AT ALL. Clicker points are for accuracy but some of them are weighted more than others. Sometimes she re-polls like 5 times and you never know what is for a grade. She is condescending and then acts confused when students say she's unapproachable. worst professor I've ever had
Her exams are incredibly hard to study for. Study guides are like "everything is chapters 10-17" so its impossible to know what shes going to ask and then shell word the questions in very odd ways almost like shes trying to trick you.
Not the worst professor, but not great either. Test questions were worded weirdly and made things confusing sometimes. I felt like I taught myself the material outside of class and Dr. Matthews just asked questions about it in class with iClicker.
If you want to listen to a narcissist gloat for a semester, take this nutjob. Waste of my time and money. Inquizzitive is how you learn because you do not learn much from the lectures. Study hard. And take advantage of the few extra credit points she gives. You teach yourself pretty much everything.
She is a nice professor, and will help you if you ask. However, in my experience, all the prepwork, lecture, and reading we are given relates very little to the exams given. The class is a big time commitment, expect to take a few hours a week to learn and even more hours to study. I feel like you shouldn't have to go to SI in order to pass.
Dr Mathews is one of the worst professors I have ever had in since being at Georgia Southern. She's very unapproachable and condescending, additionally, tests do not reflect the course material and also comes in late to a 50 minute lecture. She rather take her time telling students to be quiet or stop packing up rather than teaching.
She's really nice and will talk to you about anything you're struggling with or need clarification on. Even though attendance isn't mandatory it's very hard to pass the class without going to the lecture. The prep work is also very important to pass the class. There is a lot of it but, it's worth doing. I really enjoyed her class! 10/10! :)
She works with you and gives room for mistakes with extra credit. She takes attendance everyday using clicker.
This was my favorite professor, if you take time to do the work and study, you will succeed in this class. She has a 10% buffer
Loved Dr. Matthews! She helped me pass this course when I was going through a tough time. She made sure I was able to understand the material and was prepared for my labs.
She's not the best professor but she is the best you will get here. Her quizzes and test are very hard. She also has clicker questions during class that gets your attendance and also counts a lot for your grade. This class is very hard. However she gives a 10% buffer at the end, and we get 50 extra points for going to SI. Attendance is very big!
read her rate my professor review before taking her and I should've taken them more seriously. In class Iclicker questions are taken as a grade. Barely responds to emails. SI DOES NOT HELP YOUR GRADE (unless you go to every single session). She is very passive aggressive and RUDE If you have the ability to switch to a different professor I would.
She is a decent professor, but I would not take her again. Clicker questions are for accuracy NOT completion. All of them were very difficult. I never made higher than a C on quizzes/exams. Lecture material barely matched them. You have to teach your self most stuff. If you want an A, expect to study after every single lecture. Would recommend SI.
Lectures can be scattered, but the inquizzitives are key for learning the material. unstuck ai and diligent studying are must-haves to succeed in this class. The exams don't always align with the course content, so be prepared to put in the work.
She's a sweet lady with such good heart and truly has a passion for biology. Her class is just not my style of learning. Clicker questions count only if you get them right. She's big on teaching until the last minute and will call out students who leave early/pack up. Overall, good class and good professor, just a few things that stood out to me.
If I could give her a 0 star rating I would. Unless you naturally have great test taking skills, you won't do well at all. Her favorite line is “I don't put questions on there to trick you, only to challenge you”. Clicker points matter. Go to class every day or else your grade will suffer. Overall, I would NEVER take her again. Do not recommend.
Teaching style is basically do it yourself. She spends 50 minutes talking about nothing. You have to teach yourself everything. Without SI, you would need to study for hours after each lecture to get an A on the exam. Horrible professor, her class should not take 7-8 hours a week to study to achieve an A on exams for intro level biology courses.
Expect to teach yourself everything. Tests are unbelievably hard. Meeting with her doesn't really help. Go to SI for help with your grade, but it doesn't help with your understanding. Very hard to prepare for her tests.
I took Mathhews for both 1107 and 1108 and she is hands down the best professor I've ever had. She's an amazing professor but if you like to slack off, this class is not for you. If you apply yourself you will get an A. 1107 has a 10% buffer and 1108 has a 5% buffer.
I really like professor Mathews…I had her for bio1108L and the course is hard but she did everything the help her students understand and get the best grades possible. She is easy to talk to so ask questions!!!
uses iclicker every day and every question counts for a grade even when it's on new material. attendance is a grade through iclicker. i absolutely hated this class and only learned somewhat of the material by attending the si sessions outside of class. don't get me wrong really nice lady but does not know how to teach her lectures are so confusing.
The TA was able to get the instructions clear, but she wasn't the best at relaying the information. It is very hands-on, so keep that in mind.
She's lazy. And she'll change her study guide on the morning of a test. And if you go to her office hours for help don't take notes because she'll demand the notes back because she thinks everyone is going to cheat in her basic biology class.
she is nice and cares, however I have taught myself everything in this course (along with SI). At the beginning I was very annoyed, but overtime I have learned how to understand what she is trying to say and class is much easier now. Iclicker is graded based on daily attendance, willing to help in office hours. I am retaking her for 1108 by choice.
The material is not hard to learn, but she makes the questions difficult and make you overthink then proceed to get the answers wrong. There is so much going on at once that you tend to get lost and just have to teach yourself.
Very lecture heavy, sometimes she gets too caught up in 1 subject. Test are decently difficult but if you study you'll be fine. Nice lady, ok teacher. The lab for this class is very easy.
She really cares about her students, and yes, tests can get very difficult, but if you study, you will be fine. Her grading scale is very generous, but I do agree you have to teach yourself with the prep work.
This class made me contemplate dropping out of college. Her exams/quizzes are VERY difficult to prepare for. She tries to trick you with the questions. Some things on the tests aren't even taught. You basically have to teach yourself everything and study excessively just to do well. There's no reason why a intro level bio class should be this hard.
Great teacher. Provides two grading plans to pick from: one credit is assigned to everything including attendance, the other only exams are used for credit. I did grade plan two and still attended class. She gave excellent examples in class and always answered any questions. She gave extra credit at the end of the semester for going to the museum.
Dr. Mathews is strict and heavily relies on the syllabus. Questions are often redirected to it instead of being explained. Lectures can feel behind, with too much time on some topics and not enough on others before exams. The class is very pre-work heavy, and SI is where a lot of learning happens. If you can't attend SI, don't even try.
Honestly, I did struggle with every quiz and the two exams and still came out with an A. Really just make sure you go to class, write notes, and do the hw. she adds a 10% buffer to your grade which is great.
I never missed class, and I still had no clue what was going on. This class made my life hell, and I would never take her again. It was unrealistic, and she expected you to understand everything already. The only time I learned anything was when I taught myself because our lectures were treated like debates for things we hadn't learned yet.
