this is a hard class so you have to be willing to put forth the effort. its not entirely the professors fault if you are not putting forth the required effort to succeed. he can be sarcastic but he is an effective proffessor. i found his lectures were understandable and thats coming from someone who cannot do math easily at all! highly reccommended

McSwain is great. He gets down to business and has great explainations. If you don't understand something he has just explained then he is willing to explain it in another way that may be easier for you to understand. As long as you work hard and ask questions when you have them you are set for this class

He made math easy to understand, fun to do, and did it in a way that makes it stick with you. Doesn't give lots of extra credit, expects homework done, but doesn't weigh you down with it. He goes over things well and answers all ?'s to your understanding. Terrific teacher, just disappointed I have to find a different one for trig.

He does give you a hard time if you ask questions but he still encourages it. He's very smart and helpful, he doesnt assign alot of homework, and tests are 30 questions, he has extra credit available to raise test grades. DOESN'T allow calculators in calculus but did in trig

Collects homework before each test, gives in-depth reviews before each test, and is willing to do whatever it takes to help you to understand. Very easy on the eyes. This is a hard class but he is a good teacher. I will take all future math classes from him. If you don't understand a concept you have to speak up which is very intimidating in class. He in general is somewhat intimidating, but the best math teacher I've had.

Very little extra credit, usually in the form of a bonus exam question. Leaves lots of time for the final review. Does not use math lab. Friendly, but always down to business.

I've had Ashley for 950 and 1010 and hope I can get him for 1050. He is the only teacher I have ever understood math from. Math is tough for me, but he really helps me to understand. Great teacher!

Best math teacher I've ever had! In previous classes, when I needed a quick brush up on my something that should be a review (i.e. algebra) for a given problem my teachers told me to go back to the review section in the text. He takes the small amount of time that is needed to brush you up what you need to do. Very clear explanations. Easy tests.

After taking Trig 3 times I finally found an instructor that explains thing. This guy is by far the best math instructor I have ever had from elementary up to the present. I wish all instructors were as straight forward about the subjects they teach, this man is an awesome instructor. I don't even know what my grade is.

As long as you come to class and do the homework you will pass I promise! I missed tons of class and did not do some of the homework and still passed. But I definately recommend attending class.

I had the luck of taking it from Ashley this time though and I finally passed! He presents the information in a way that's common sense and not computer talk. Fantastic teacher.

One of the most interesting professors I've had for math. He doesn't fit the stereotypical math teacher, and because of this kept me highly interested in the field that I have chosen to pursue. Great at hitting all the major focus points on the chapter without boring you, and assigned great problems to get you ready for possible exam questions.

Hands down, the best math teacher I have ever had! Mr. McSwain is extremely knowledgeable in his subject. He explains everything so clearly that you don't need the text except for the hw. There are 5 tests and hw is due the day of. Extra credit is available on each test. He reviews before each test & he really prepares you for the department final.

Professor McSwain is awesome! It had been three years since I took 1010 and was terrified to jump into 1050. He explains everything clearly and makes sure you understand the material before he moves on. I am so happy that I was able to take 1050 from him. His practice tests are extremely helpfuland so are his final reviews take this class from him!

This is a professor who is willing to help you understand. But for him to be able to help, you have to ask questions or tell him you don't understand otherwise he does not know what you are struggle with. He is easy going and funny.

Just finished taking 1220 from McSwain. Also took 1210 and 1060 from him. Easily the most clear, concise and organized professor in SLCC's math department in my opinion. If you're looking for a professor who's interested in your success, take from McSwain. A bit intimidating at first but it quickly becomes clear that he wants to help.

He is THE BEST!!! He explains matherial CRYSTAL clear! I tryed to take this class with 4(!) different professors before. Ashley explains theory first and after works different problems. You will get your graids almost immediately! He gives you Practice Tests for all sections+Final. Work them out, ask him a questions and you will get an "A"!

I loved this teacher, I have really struggled passing math and he was the teacher that just made it all click. He is great with homework and tests and will let you make them up if your late or cant show up. He also just explains things really well. He's also not bad to look at.

Mc Swain will is a fantastic teacher. He gives you the basic "this is what you need to know". His explanations are clear cut, do this and you will get the right answer every time. He shows you one way to do things and is never confusing. He is rough some times but only to limit confusion. Flexible with attendance.

I have struggled with math my entire life. He explains math and cuts out all the BS fluff. Tells you how to work the problems in the most simplified terms. Math clicks for me now when it is explained and taught by him.

Best math professor I have ever had!! I had to take Math 1010 twice to pass with higher than a D but Math 1050 has been a breeze with him teaching. I have never understood math more. Show up to class and take down his notes and you will pass. His explanations are so good that when you look at the book it actually is more confusing and complicated.

I took Math 1010 with a great professor but found 1050 to be so much easier with this professor. He does an amazing job at teaching and making it very clear to understand. Having this be my second to last semester at SLCC I would have to say he has been the best at teaching and grading.

Incredible math teacher. He tells you what you need to know for exams and that is all. If you do the short amount of homework he gives, you will get a good grade. He is a laid back and cool guy. A few sections a day, 15-20 questions on each, and chapter tests. My only complaint is that review days before tests could be more effective.

Attendance isn't mandatory, but he notices if you skip. He is very clear in lectures and will go over things if you don't understand. He can be a bit abrasive, but it's not personal it is just how he is. Hadn't taken math in 20 years, he helped me get through this class and pass. Attend each class, use the book, do the homework, you'll pass.

McSwain is a very knowledgeable math teacher with the ability to teach without all the fluff. He gets right to the point and explains things very well. Though he is a good teacher, he is a very non-sense, dry humor kind of guy. He will often make you feel uncomfortable for asking questions. "I already taught this... were you listening?"

Ashely made Math 1010 easy for me, he definitely knows his math and knows what he's talking about .If you do the work and study the way he teaches you, you should do good. He makes you feel a little uncomfortable when you ask a question you dont get ,but overall I enjoyed having Ashely as my instructor and hope to get him again for math 1050.

Good teacher. You have to do you homework and be ready for class the following days. I HATE math, but McSwain made it clear on what you have to do to pass the class. BE sure to attend his FINAL review at the end. It helped me to pass the final and the class with a (B) :) and I still hate math. McSwain is the man when it comes to math. Good luck!!!

Great professor. Lecture are easy and he is willing to help with homework problems. If you struggle with math I highly recommend this teacher.

Ashley does make his students feel dumb when asking questions. I don't think he means to, but he does. But overall, very, very little homework, and is a good test grader. Would recommend, but don't expect to get a lot of help from him directly, so be sure to use other sources for back up. But lectures are easy to follow.

He does math fast, and mostly in his head. If you need an explanation for every step of a problem this is not the class for you. Mcswain is fast and to the point and gives a great review for the final.

The BEST teacher!! He has a strong personality, don't let that scare you he is an AWESOME math teacher. Pay attention in class, his notes are so freaking good their is NO WAY you can't pass. Ashley is the only professor that I'd highly recommend taking Math 1050 from at SLCC. I spoke with a few students in my class who had to retake 1050, and they were told to take it from Ashley. I am very fortunate that I found out early and was able to get into his class. Do yourself a favor, and take it from him!

Ashley is by far the best professor I've had. He explains things really well and if there's an easier way to figure out a problem he will explain it that way instead. He can be a little abrupt, but that is just because he doesn't want to waste time. Pay attention and he'll give you all the information you need to pass this class.

If you want a professor that will explain math the way you need it explained, he is your best option. Working from the book sounds like it would be more difficult, but it is much easier than an online course, and gets you doing the problems hands on. The reviews prepare you for the exams and the exams and material prepares you for the final.

Solid instructor, I highly recommend him over others or the online version. He comes off a little condescending and could care less about connecting with students on a personal level, but that's fine because he'll teach you the content in a way that makes sense and you'll get a fair grade!

It's important to not miss any classes & pay attention as no work is done online& it's really hard to play catch up. He does make you feel dumb for asking ?'s but I don't think it's intentional, that's just how he is. It's a difficult subject for me but he does do reviews which match up w/ the tests so stay after and ask questions if needed.

Ashley is AWESOME! I took him in High school as well. He explains things so well, you don't have to show up to class, but it is to your loss. He explains things in such a clear way that made me understand Algebra! At the end of the semester he will make the score on the two lowest tests the same as the final if the final is higher than those tests!

I took him in High School, and for 1010. He will help you with whatever you need! He is there to help you pass! You can ask him questions on the test if you have a problem you can't solve. He replaces you two lowest test scores with the final score, if the final is higher than those two tests!

Ashley is a great lecturer. He is clear and helps you understand the material. He does, however, make ya feel incompetent in class when you ask a question- he kinda snaps at ya. Only a few homework assignments. Was allowed a 3x5" card with notes and formulas on it for exams (except the final) TAKE HIS CLASS!

I had him in high school for 1050 and1060. Not only was he an amazing teacher, but he was so friendly. He would sit by my desk and we developed a really good relationship. He can be very sarcastic, but he has good intentions. He even gave me extra credit on a test because we took it on my birthday. I love this guy! Seriously the best math teacher

He gives you the odd questions for homework so you can check your answers in the back of the textbook; he's also willing to go over the problems with you. Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. Yes Math1080 is difficult but if you put in the effort you will pass. He genuinely wants every single one of his students to succeed and he actually cares. He goes out of his way to make you successful. Yes he can be brash but maybe all these whiny millennials just need thicker skin.

Honestly his only flaw is he understands the material SO well that he forgets how complicated it can be while juggling other classes and life as well and gets a little condescending. Overall he's an excellent professor though.

He is awesome in his lectures! For homework he only assigns questions to you that you really need to know for passing the class, etc. His tests consist of the pre-test questions that you really need to know. So make sure you put in the time to do his pre-tests and know your work. He's not an easy A, but he gives you all the tools to get an A. :)

Ashley McSwain is the best math professor in SLCC!!! His lecture is very clear and he's willing to answer any questions you have. He gives review before each exam and the exam is the same format as the review if you study it you will do great. There is lots of written homework do the day of the exam but as long as you do it you will get full point.

This is a fast paced class. You have to keep up on homework and have a good knowledge of past material (same as any other class). If you don't attend class it will be much harder to pass as there are lots of handouts given out and gone over in class. Very knowledgeable but like I said, the pace is fast, so it's gonna be a bit hard for some.

Took online due to covid. Ashley put up videos before the lecture which shortened the class and gave us a chance to ask questions about the current and previous lectures. He is accessible and willing to help in any way he can. We had 5 exams and a final along w/ hmwk for each lesson. He was great and the class was as hard as any other math class.

Ashley is a great math teacher. He posts videos of the lectures before class and then goes over the material and answers questions in class. He's very helpful and would definitely take his class again. It's as hard as any other math class. Attend lectures, do the homework, study for tests/quizzes and you'll be fine.

This is truly the best math professor SLCC has to offer. He does everything in his power to get his students to succeed. He records all of his lectures so that you can watch them if you miss class. The reviews he has you do before an exam are SO helpful and almost the exact same as the exams. I don't think I would have passed this class without him

Mcswain is the man. He makes Math so easy to understand. Has a YouTube channel with copies of all lectures so if you need help or review they're easy to find. I found he always taught the best and easiest to follow methods for problems, he's super willing to work with you. Homework and quizzes are rounded up to 100% if you get at least 70%.

HIGHLY recommend taking his class. He gets straight to the point and will answer all your questions. He also has recorded lectures which are super helpful.

Night classes are rough, but he does a wonderful job of helping understand the material and make sure you know what you need for the test. It's an extremely hard class and I've taken this class a dozen times with many profs and this guy is the best! He won't give you options if you have an emergency unless early notification. Final is departmental.

I would have received an A- or B+. However, I got sick and fell behind. He makes Math easy for those who struggle. I suggest watching the videos before going to lecture. Do the homework he gives you and the exam reviews. If you struggle with the language behind math like I did, he helps & teaches you it. Hands-down, best instructor I have had.

This math class was my favorite math class I have ever taken. Mr. McSwain does an incredible job at teaching and making sure everyone understands. I wish that Mr. McSwain taught more classes that I needed to take! He explained everything in a very clear way. Study guides were exactly like his exams so there was no surprises/tricky written questions. The homework was usually enough to be prepared for the exams, but barely counts towards your grade. Grade is mostly the unit exam and final exam.

McSwain is a fantastic math teacher, he really helps you retain the information and gives you what you need to pass.

I took Professor McSwain's Math 1050 online class. He is such a fantastic teacher! After lecturing, he provides a LOT of example problems to help you with your assignments. He even gives you his phone number so you can ask him questions whenever you need to. He's very nice and he's a great teacher! I totally recommend him!

If you struggle with math or just want to have an awesome professor, take McSwain's class. I've always gotten low final grades in previous math classes, but McSwain is the best at not only teaching the material but also answering specific questions that students might have. Take his class.

He creates videos for each topic and then meets with the class twice a week to review homework. His teaching style is very easy to understand and follow. He also responds quickly to questions.

I enjoyed taking his class so much that I'm kind of bummed to have any other teachers. He posted prerecorded videos of the lessons, and would then go back over the same concepts live, in my case. Im in the spring class rn but, 4 exams and final. DO THE EXAM REVIEWS and you'll get 90s. the exams are worth more. He has lecture videos and free online textbook. He also does 1 extra credit problem on tests. exams are in class, but you can go to the testing center. Very reachable by email, etc. Take him and actually put in time and effort!

Ashley was amazing. He was super understanding and willing to go above and beyond to help you. He really wants you to succeed in the class and curves/drop test scores. Highly recommend if you want an A for math and actually understand the material. Plenty of time in class to do your homework if you wanted to.
