AVOID! Dr. Pettit is the absolute WORST professor I've ever had. Lectures are unfocused, messy, and useless. Exams are impossible if you don't memorize the textbook. Does NOT care about the students' educations. ONLY cares about a high test average. Will NOT help if you are struggling... Will encourage you to withdraw from the course instead.
Lectures are too fast, the teacher does not care if you are there or not. Does not want to help you, more just getting through the slides
She reads right off the slides which are posted online. She is def way too specialized to be teaching Gen Bio 1. Sometimes I think she gives wrong information and pronounces things long. Tests are heavily focused on memorization. I would only take this class again because she's not that bad.
I came to this school hopeful to graduate as a bio major. This teacher has made me hate the subject I love. We have 4 tests total, 50 mcq. She reads her slides in class, no extra information, no explanation, does not give room to ask her questions. I now have doubts about my major, my friends are changing majors, I strongly suggest u avoid her.
She is the reason why I do not love Bio anymore. Worst professor ever! Avoid! She SPEEDS through the lecture slides. Her tests are so hard. worst class I've ever taken!
UM. NO
I would honestly not take this class again with her because she LITERALLY reads right off her slides. No point in going to lecture because you can read all of it yourself. Her tests are all multiple choice so i guess it's kinda easy but you really have to know her slides in order to pass.
If you are good at memorization and studying, take her. If not, I would not recommend this teacher. Her exams are tough and her information is all over the place on her slides. Doesnt care if you come to class.
Dr. Pettit is not available for office hours and won't make time to meet with you. She'll continuously imply that students should withdraw from her class rather than try and help. She doesn't seem to care if her students do well or not or about their stress levels. Nothing was gained from showing up to class, she just reads directly off the slides.
Ok I am not good at Bio, but I still got the grade I needed to stay in my program. Exams are very hard and you NEED to know your material very well. Go to class & takes notes (helps a lot). Not a lot of hw. She is very nice & gives links to videos & Kahoots to help learn material. I would maybe recommend to study for this class before it even start
Dr Pettit screwed me up in my PA program and told me to withdraw. She refused to help me and should suffer like us. She is just the worst teacher I ever had. Ask any of her students. AVOID DR PETTIT AT ALL COSTS.
Worst Professor ever. Wants you to withdraw. Horrible
I studied really hard for all of the exams and took notes on all of the lectures and that still wasnt enough. Her exams have barely anything to do with her lectures.I need to retake her class next semester, which is putting me behind in the PT program. wish me luck :/
Dr. Pettit is a solid Biology Professor. A majority of each exam is just Dr. Pettits power Points, which she posts on blackboard. She is super helpful during office hours. Cons: launchpad is $$$ and only worth 4%. I think many other reviews are left by students who didnt put the effort in to succeed. IF YOU WANT AN A, YOU CAN GET IT!!!!
I do not recommend taking her as a professor, she does not care about the well-being of her students or how the class preforms. She was the most discouraging professor I have every had and she consistently discouraged her students from taking her class and going down a science major path.
She is literally the worst Bio professor ever. All she does is read off of her slides and half of the time doesn't even know about topics herself. I just hate her and I recommend not taking her, she's just horrible.
I took this class with a bunch of angry, privileged freshmen so that's why they gave her a low rating. Pettit is fine. Memorize her slides, be able to apply the concepts, go ask her questions, and you'll get the grade you worked for. Confirm office hours with her ahead of time so she is aware. I had her last semester; she still helps me out today.
She has a lot of bad reviews because her class is filled with underclassmen who don't know how to study for a content heavy bio class. It's a bio class so obviously there are a lot of PowerPoint slides but they are more than manageable IF you study. Simply study the slides, take your time on the quizzes because they're tricky and do the launchpad.
Dr. Pettit was a fine teacher. Everything on her powerpoints were fair game to be found on the test. Her powerpoints are long (3+ ppts per test/ 50+ slides per ppt) it can be a lot of information. Show up to class, review the powerpoints and the class will be average. Biology can be a hard subject to many, it is not like high school. Do not skip.
She is a super nice lady and is very intelligent in her field of research. Not a huge fan with her teaching style (mainly follow along with powerpoints and fill in the blanks), but if you read the textbook you'll get an A. Also, super cool field trips.
Shes is ok to be honest. Her class is very textbook heavy for the first two tests, but start becoming more about her notes as you go on. Her quizzes are hard and usually need to look up the answers online as they arent in the textbook. Dont take her class unless you can memorize the textbook.
Do not take unless you want to teach yourself. Will standardize you like a test. You are just another number. Need help? Better drop the class before last day to drop.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. If you are reading this review, DO NOT TAKE HER. She does not care about you at all. She doesnt care if youre sick. She states in her syllabus she doesnt care if you go to health services. Her class is so boring and she reads right from her slides. She is not understanding at all. Beware!
Her test questions are tough and worded differently to trick you. Once the class went online, no one was allowed to see what they got wrong on previous tests. Overall, she is an OK teacher. 4 exams worth 21% each, and 16 quizzes worth 1% each of your grade.
She rushes through slides and you will barely have time to write anything down. If you don't come to class you will probably miss a whole chapter because of how fast she goes. You either have to write down every slide or print out the slides which wastes A LOT of paper. She's nice but her teaching style is annoying.
Insanely hard class. Do not take if you do not have the determination or attention span. I had to put in a couple hours everyday to get an A in this class. If you study last minute you will fail.
STUDY FOR EXAMS! There aren't many other grades for the course so exams are weighted heavily. Usually are straightforward questions and based directly on her lecture slides so she is not looking to trick you. There is a lot of content and I was not a huge fan of her style. Lectures were read of slides and she gave fill-in-the-blank slides for notes
She reads off her slides at super speed and does not give you time to write, so you might as well sleep through lectures. Does not give back exams, rarely gives curves. Spent most of my freshman semester studying for this class to get a B+.
please, im begging you not take this this professor. She is kind of nice but her teaching style is garbage, made me hate school and made me hate bio. You literally have to memorize 4 lectures for the test like piss off
Professor Pettit is a subpar teacher, at best. She just reads off slides in a monotonous manner, that consist of 50+ slides full of paragraphs of information. She's a nice person, but curves badly. Tests make a majority of your grade, so do very well on them. Fill in the blank slides, memorization is her teaching style. Overall, I don't recommend.
STUDY THE SLIDES!!! Overall fair professor and if you study all of the slides you should do fine
She was just overall irritable. I hated going to her class and her forms of grading things other than tests, made no sense. She gave me my first B (I had a 4.0) and the exams were not layed out like the she said. I dislike her, but a B isnt the worst, just do you work and youll be able to pull one.
I despised going to her class day in and day out.
She used blackboard collaborate instead of in person my year and had the camera function turned off. There was no participation at all and she just read off of slides. I didnt learn anything tbh. She never responded to my emails either. Dont recommend at all.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She said to my class that she doesn't answer our emails because she has "more important emails to respond to". I sent her an email a month ago and she still has not responded. She lectures the whole class so if you want to ask questions you need to wait until after class. She assigns 6-10 quiz assignments a week. Very unsupportive.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She knows her information but is horrible with her students. You want help? Nope. You want support? Nope. You want an email back? Nope. You want to talk about grades? Nope. Very smart, but awful when it comes to being a professor. Look elsewhere for a bio professor.
Professor Pettit will make you hate being a Biology major. She goes through her slides like The Flash. Although she is very intelligent, her teaching skills are subpar and you will have to rewatch the recordings afterwards for notes. Her exams are on the topics she barely talks about during class compared to the entire chapter mentioned.
She is very rude in her emails. Not a good professor at all. The whole class is based on four tests and she doesnt take time to explain things in class, she just rushes through powerpoints. If you take it her, be ready to have to rewatch lectures because you will miss things from just blinking.
Professor Pettit just reads off powerpoints every class. How is that teaching? If you can bare to stay awake during lecs or don't mind teaching yourself everything then get ready to retain 100+ slides of information for the 4 exams worth 90% of your grade. Even though there are only 50 questions on each don't expect to pass by just glancing at them
DON'T TAKE PETTIT UNLESS YOU ARE A BIO MAJOR. THIS PROFESSOR IS CRAZY AND HER COURSE WAS A NIGHTMARE FOR ME. ONLY D I HAVE GOTTEN IN MY COLLEGE CAREER...
The test grades make up 96% of the grade but if you study the slides a lot you will be fine. She doesn't really teach she kind of just reads off the slides the whole class, but as long as you study that material you will pass the exams. I think the weight of the test grades is ridiculous but bio students with other professors have the same thing
Only reason you have to show up to class is to get the notes. Provides slide outlines and gives the blanks during lecture. Really sweet and you can tell she's super passionate about what she teaches but its near impossible to pass her class. I spent hours upon hours every day in the library studying and still couldn't manage to get a decent grade.
Be sure to get all of the notes, slides are fill in the blank but she moves so fast that sometimes you miss the answer. Make friends in the class to rely on for missed notes. She's always ahead of the other bio classes but somehow its our fault our scores are the worst. Passing exams is hard, u need at least a week to study the slides to get a 60.
Tests are too hard for people who even know the subject well. If you're a bad test taker you will FAIL. You would know everything for a test and still get 60s because of how her tests are formatted. Your grade is not going to reflect your knowledge or effort you put into this course. Take anyone else
She blows through the slides & doesn't care if you miss any. Her course is test heavy so you don't have a lot of chances to bring your grade up bc hw is only 4%. You won't pass studying the night before bc one 50 mc question test is based off of about 200 slides which is just outrageous. She didnt curve anything for us even when so many ppl failed!
this professor is the worst teacher/professor I have seen in my life. I somehow managed to excel in my chemistry class but struggled so hard in her BIO class because the only thing she does is read off her 1000's of slides. she tried to teach us about the entire excretory system in one day, right before our last exam. that's all i have to say.
attendance isnt required, but if you skip a class make sure you get the notes because everything is based off of the slides. pretty much your entire grade is based off of knowing the 300 powerpoint slides per test. she is so bad, i want to give her a zero, but thats not possible. so i give her a 1.
Don't taker. She is very slide heavy and each test had at least 600 quizlet terms to study. Even when studying for more than a week before the tests, most of the class still did poorly. She doesn't curve and about half of the people are retaking the class now. If you miss one class you will miss about half of a slide show and she won't help you.
Don't take her, she just lectures the whole class and does not really make sure you understand. You basically have to teach yourself 350 slides per test that is wort 96% of your grade. She rushes through the slides as well, which is not what a teacher is supposed to do. She is the worst, please find someone that will teach you.
This teacher speeds through the slides and packs so much information that when it comes time to study you are overwhelmed with the amount of information you must learn. In addition to this when you do learn the concept and information the test that she give expect you to know the information inside and out which is quite difficult for freshman.
Your only grades will be the 4 exams. There is a ton of homework. The exams are 50 question multiple choice and she does not curve. She may toss in 2 points depending on how generous she is. all she does is read the slides and its extremely difficult to memorize everything. She does not really work in your favor and I would avoid her at all costs.
At first I really liked Dr. Pettit, but the worst part of this class is her unforgiving policies. I had COVID and couldn't take an exam because I had to isolate. It is stressful enough that 4 exams make up 96% of your grade in the class, but the makeup exam automatically deducts 10% of your grade. She didn't care about my health.
I know a lot of people really hate Dr. Pettit but I honestly thought she was a completely fine professor. In order to get a good grade you really have to work, not an easy A by any means. But if you put in the work you will see good results. I will say it is a ton of memorization, her tests questions are pretty much taken directly from her slides.
The class is not bad if you study the slides you can get an A. But you have to memorize every word on the slides basically. You have to go to the lectures in order to fill out the outlines she gives.
I took Dr. Pettit for Gen Bio 1 and did fine in the course. She had a completely different set up for both slides and exams for Gen Bio 2-Cell. She does not care about her students and deducts 10 points off makeup exams, even with emails from the dean of students and medical documentation. She wants students to fail the course. Do not take her.
the exams were super easy and straightforward. know the info that's underlined, bolded, listed, and things like that. the weekly assignments were very easy but annoying sometimes. She is an easy grader and curves every exam and there's an extra credit assignment counted towards the final grade. She's nice and cares about what she's teaching.
Absolutely not class was very difficult. Emphasized stuff that was not on exams and glossed over things that were. DO NOT TAKE HER! YOU WILL FAIL! GPA TANKER
She was pretty good. Very passionate about biology, if a bit disorganized. Her slides are based on the textbook, so reading it ahead of time or while you study really helps you grasp the concepts. Study WAY in advance. Make flash cards as soon as you get the notes from lecture. Do end of chapter problems and the online homework.
Don't take her. She is the worst professor I have ever had and does not care the slightest bit about her students.
worst professor I've ever had. her exam questions do not make any sense and she is literally setting you up for failure.
This person could not possibly care less about her students. her grading criteria is probably stricter than the military and no matter what is going on she will not give you any sort of flexibility with due dates. her exam questions are unfairly hard for literally no reason and I'm convinced that the good ratings she has are written by her. avoid.
This is not a lenient professor. Exams are challenging, the final for this class was cumulative and worth 26% of the overall grade. Do not bother asking for extra credit, make-ups, curves, etc. My advice is take a different professor and buy the optional second book that teaches you how to solve genetics problems. SKIP CLASS YOU WON'T PASS.
I was scared when the other class filled up. Turns out, she's a decent professor. People hate that she doesn't hand out As. To pass, you have to grind. Do not skip class. Memorize every line of her notes. Study daily or as often as possible. Use flashcards and spaced repetition. Read the textbook. Do this and the exams won't be difficult at all.
She is an AWFUL teacher!!! Everything you have heard about her is true. Only four exams that make up 96% of the grade. No curve. No extra credit. She isn't approachable, considers her lectures her own comedy routine. If you reach out for help she'll only tell you to go to her lectures. Don't waste your time studying anything else, its fruitless!
Horrible teacher. If I could give her a zero, I would. You will be significantly better taking Tall or Hill.
She is the worst professor in seton Hall at the bio department . do not take her even if you got no other choice. She is the the death mother of biology in Seton Hall. DO NOT TAKE HER EVER. You'll hate your life after the first test .
she is actually the worst professor at seton hall. i would rather chew on glass than ever take her again. avoid at all costs!!!!!!
tanked my gpa. studied for hours and still failed. more than half the lecture failed my semester. i met with her and she didn't care. she made life hell. she's on academic probation yet is still allowed to teach. doesn't care about you, don't try talking to her. if ur stuck with her u should drop and wait for another semester, you will get an F.
Zionist discriminative professor, very unfair, her teaching style is discriminative in terms of engaging with diverse perspectives. during discussions, there seems to be a tendency to prioritize certain viewpoints while dismissing others without adequate consideration. created an environment where students may feel hesitant to share their thoughts
Do NOT take Dr. Petit. Her exams are difficult for no reason. Her slides are disorganized, jumping from one topic to another and then back to that topic. Isn't very good with her teaching style and doesn't slow down and explain the content in ways students can understand. First time I'm retaking a class in the winter and paying out of pocket.
Tests were definitely tricky but not impossible. Gave up my sanity studying for them though. She's a decent lecturer at best. The thing that sucked the most is that her syllabus has a policy where if you schedule a makeup exam, you start at an automatic 10% deduction. So, she clearly does not care if her students have a genuine emergency/sickness.
the worst professor I have ever taken. Tanked my GPA. Every exam taken took multiple weeks to grade, then was never even handed back. I never knew what i got wrong so i couldn't learn from her. I tried emailing her and never got a response. No matter the countless hours I put into studying, I never saw my work pay off. would give a 0 if i could.
Her and her exams are terrible. The reviews are correct. Save yourself. Good luck.
Based off of these reviews, everyone hates her. I was very scared to take this course with her, but if you go to lectures, pay attention, and study, this class is a breeze. Pettit is very nice and does a great job at explaining concepts, she's open to all questions and seemingly really cares for her students. She really isn't bad at all.
If you get stuck in this class, pray.
The notes she goes over in lecture barely help you on the test. The achieve questions don't help either. I made maybe 300 flashcards, completed achieves, attended si sessions, made quizlets, one-note study guides, and even wrote everything out on paper and on a whiteboard to quiz myself for each test, Nothing helps honestly better off guessing
Tests aren't really based off lectures. Yes her test questions surround the topics but she asks the most random questions that aren't brought to our attention in achieves or lecture
I dont have the same overly negative thoughts much like a bunch here have. She actually teaches really well but the Achilles Heel is the fact that there is an abhorrent disconnect with her lecture material and the exam questions PS, if you have extenuating circumstances (ex special needs) tell her before not after. Shes stingy when it comes to that
Ashley is one of the worst professors I have ever met during my time at Seton Hall. Not only does she not respect students as human beings, she is ableist and taunts students for their disabilities. It's clear she is highly unhappy with her life and wishes to let it out on her students. I hope she chooses to become a better person.
Better luck talking to a brick wall then trying to ask her about anything you don't understand. She does not teach at all. Nothing. She writes sloppy all over her slides. She sends out blank slides, not annotated, and writes EVERYTHING in class. If you miss anything in class she literally will not help at all. Take anyone else but her.
Worst professor to take. Need chem in order to know what she's talking about half the time. She gives so much attitude to anyone who asks a question. I politely asked for help and she acted like I wasn't worth her time. DO NOT TAKE HER. Drop and take with another professor at another time. It is not worth it for your GPA.
Not worth it, rather wait a semester to take this course; tests are not significant to the lectures she gives.
horrible; dont take the class.
everyone who has rated her above a 1 and says her class isn't "that bad" is lying. everyone i know in this class, including me, has nothing good to say about her. you can memorize the slides all you want, read the textbook over and over again, take practice quizzes and read other sources, and nothing would help you. save yourself
lost my mind studying for this woman's exams. NOTHING, and i mean NOTHING (textbook, achieve assignments, videos, practice quizzes) that she gives us correlates to her tests. you're better off being a good guesser than actually studying. either get a different professor or wait a semester. save your GPA and your sanity.
i usually do not do reviews on professors. but her class is so terrible it is my duty to save anyone else who will listen. please stay clear of this professor. do not think that you can get through her exams by just studying enough. do not make the same mistake i did by not listening to these reviews and taking her class. save your gpa at any cost.
Insane amount of homework, only worth 4% of your grade, and exams make up the other 96%. Her exams suck because they're not anything like the homework or the lectures. I showed up to class every day, studied my ass off, did all the SI and online practice I could find, and did all the homework, and still failed her class.
She is what the reviews say. She isn't a great professor but I didn't do terrible. I wish I did better though. If you have no other choice than to take her class, you haven't lost all hope. I studied very hard and attended the lectures and was able to get a C. Her class is very possible to pass but it will take almost everything you have.
Please choose anyone else. Spare yourself.
Her slides are pretty good and have a lot of information, but her tests are not that similar to them. She loves to add trick questions. She curves a good amount, but not enough for the number of people doing badly in her class. As long as you really study and practice, you can succeed. Don't let these reviews scare you too much.
She was ok and knows the material. Tests are tough but if you read and study you'll do fine
