She is a fun, young prof. She made the classes fun and they always went by super fast. The readings are interesting but she tends to grade papers hard. Revisions are optional, but I'd suggest you do them to improve your grade. She is a new prof. to GV and I would recommend taking her if possible.

She's an awesome prof! If you're looking to get your SWS credit out of the way, she's the prof to have! A good amount of reading, but she's very clear on directions and if you don't understand the text (which happened quite a bit for me), she has GREAT lectures. Very 'to the point'. Awesome enthusiasm and realates really well with students!!

Prof. Shannon is new to GV and it shows. She's a fun young teacher but a very very hard grader. I have always done well in all of my English classes (I'm an English major) and this class was very hard for me. I recieved a much lower grade than expected. I was in class just about everyday and did fairly well on all of my papers. The tests are killer

In my opinion she's not a very good teacher. She simply says the phrase, "Right?" too many times... and in order to pay some attention, i find myself counting how many times it is said... 286 times within 50 minutes is just too distracting!

You really have to read in this course but that is to be expected from a literature rich class. However, I didn't like the fact that the students lead every class and Prof Shannon just contributes here and there as needed in the class discussion. I wish there was more direction from her sometimes, but overall I still did enjoy the class.

Dr. Shannon is a lovely person who is willing to help students outside of class and is very understanding of those with anxiety/depression. Yet, the class is led almost entirely by students, and she contributes very little. Grades are also entered very late.

Knowledgeable, helpful outside of class. Otherwise, awful. Never grades your work on time. Extremely harsh grader, I get all A's in the English department and have a D in her class. Course is essentially student lead so we don't know what she wants out of us. Don't take her, it was a mistake.

I liked this course as a whole and the professor is nice. She tries to be accessible to students. However, my biggest issue was that she doesn't teach the class at all; it is all student-led discussion. Even though she doesn't teach the class, she doesn't grade either. She is a tough grader and no one got any grades on assignments until the end.

Dr. Shannon is one of my favorite professors at Grand Valley. She is very passionate about the subject and her passion is infectious to the class. As long as you do the required readings for class and speak up every once in a while, you should do fine in the class.

If you can take the class with anyone else, I would. This Prof takes forever to grade (over 2 mos), doesn't have clear grading rubrics (for how the class is weighted), doesn't answer emails. For being the department chair, you'd think she'd have higher personal standards. Decent lectures but really bad structure and kinda stuck up

Why is her rating so low?? She's great! Homework was reasonable - just readings, Perusall annotations, and occasional 10-min lecture videos; no busy work. In class she'd lecture a little, then group discussions. She's VERY in-tuned to how we're doing mentally; she took a whole period addressing exam stress, dropped a couple assignments. Take her!

Dr. Shannon is a nice lady and is very personable. With that being said, she is a very tough grader. I am an A student and her grading crushed quite a bit of my confidence in my writing abilities. She also is very difficult to get a hold of and takes a long time to grade. Make sure to keep that in mind when in her class and you will do fine!

Dr. Shannon's classes are really interesting, and I like that she uses short stories in addition to novels. She does take a while to grade things, so don't expect to have your papers graded quickly. She is easily accessible in her office hours, and her organization of the classes are nice w/o being repetitive or making people move around.

I will never understand why Shannon's rating is so low. I've had her twice now, and I love her! She really cares ab her students, is willing to adjust syllabus when we're overwhelmed. She really knows her stuff, but makes tons of room for discussion and for students to share their own views. You gotta stay on top of the work, but she's great!!!
