Great professor but you must work for your A. Tests are challenging if you do not study correctly. Record the lectures and swear by them! Test questions are directly from lecture.
Best biology professor! His lectures are very clear, and his tests are exactly like them so you can't skip class. Tests are hard, but as long as you take good lecture notes you'll be fine since he repeats everything he says more than once so its impossible not to forget.
Really difficult. Tests are tough you really need to know your stuff. Take him if you have at least some Bio Background and Chemistry background. If you jump in with neither, it can be pretty difficult, stressful and time consuming. You really need to pay attention and go to class. Online quizzes and the final is optional (drops lowest test)
Had him twice, INSANELY disingenuous. Doesn't see students as paying customers & he is about as lazy as it gets. Tests are a reflection. Disrespectful tone over email1-on-1. Not as knowledgeable as one would hope either. Asking a question is to issue a challenge- he quickly becomes offended & dismissive. Oh & the renown enthusiasm? A red herring.
I took him for Cell Biology, fall 2014. His exams were very difficult, despite his demeanor during lecture. He is very unclear at times and jumps around a lot during his lectures. He takes about 2 weeks to grade exams and seems to have too much on his plate to give his class the attention they deserve. I was really disappointed overall
An interesting class!
Upad was a great instructor super passionate, and while his tests were a little tough, if you did the learning objectives there is no way you could fail. I got a 98 in this Bio 1 with Upad. I am no genius, I just put the time into the class that is necessary. Read the book go to class, and do the learning objectives, and you will get a B
Dr. U is awesome to listen to in lectures--he is really passionate about the subject and knows his stuff! His tests and quizzes are not easy but this is an upper level course so that is to be expected! He gives you all the resources you need to succeed. If you make the effort, you will pass and you will learn a lot in the process!
He is a great teacher and loves what he does but his exams are ridiculous! The material he gives you in class isn't what is on the exam. He expects you to know the information on the level he does. I wouldn't recommend anyone to take him!!!!
One of the best professors I've taken so far. He is so passionate about teaching and is willing to help anybody no matter how many questions are asked. NO NEED FOR TEXTBOOK, in fact his lectures is the textbook, which is great study material for exams. You will learn so much in this class and if I had the chance I would take him again.
I absolutely loved the course material and had previously taken related higher level courses, genetics and biochem, both of those I got As in easily, so the fact that I was struggling for a B in this class was very displeasing. His lectures are VERY broad, but his tests are VERY specific, so if you actually want to pass plan on memorizing the book
DO NOT TAKE UPADHYAYA! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM!! His powerpoints are basically outlines from what h really wants you to know. He gets a lot of questions from picture captions rather than the actual text itself. MEMORIZE THE BOOK! and do his Review Questions. Honestly, the second worst teacher I've ever had at USF.
Took bio 1 with him. One of the hardest teachers I've ever encountered. Tests were very difficult. When I say memorize each word that comes out of his mouth during lecture, I mean it. Read the chapters, go to class, write down every word he says or record it, memorize those words and study his powerpoints. Basically do everything.
Dr. Upadhyaya lecture's are great. He is very enthusiastic about the subject. He is helpful, so if you need help, go to him; he wants students to understand. With that said, his tests are challenging. Read the book, take good notes, listen carefully in class (record the lectures, if possible), and read the test questions carefully.
The course itself is somewhat difficult, but reading the textbook and making flashcards on his PowerPoint slides has really helped me. Notes are key in his class. Also see him during office hours! He's extremely helpful and it will help you to ask questions and take notes on what you got wrong on each exam!
Hardest class I'm taking this year. Upadhyaya is in fact pretty funny and passionate about what he is teaching but sometimes it seems as if he forgets that students may not be at the same level of understanding. TESTS are super hard and specific and Upadhyaya does not reply to emails so unless you meet with him in person, don't expect much help.
He was very confident lecturer was nice, but he does care more about his Biology 1 students, so I recommend emailing questions rather than attending office hours.
Very animated in class and easy to understand. Quizzes not easy, even with worksheet. Tests are completely different from all material (lecture and textbook.) Very confusing tests and not easy to study for. Wouldn't take again, many do not recommend. BEWARE.
He's very passionate about the subject and gets into a lot of depth with his lectures. His quizzes and tests are difficult if you don't memorize every little detail he speaks of in lecture. If you go to class and take great notes(basically write everything he says), you could get an A.
Makes it very clear his expectations and goals for the class. Assists students out of class, really wants you to succeed! Pushes you to your limit. The book helps a lot; even though class isn't mandatory it helps to go. Quizzes are ridiculously hard but tests are fair. Would take again.
This class is not a ball in the park. Either you will need to have connections or study hard. Probably the hardest multiple choice tests I've ever taken. However, he has 5 tests and 9 quizzes which he drops the lowest of each. Class isn't mandatory but you will need to go in order to pass the class. Don't worry about buying any of the books.
Dr. U is a great professor, very formal and professional which is always respectable. He does his best to concepts in his lectures you can really benefit from. But reading is a must or it will be very difficult to keep up- its a lot to know and memorize.
The tests in this class are hard, but as long as you pay careful attention in lecture (don't skip!) and read the textbook, it's not impossible. Go to office hours and review past exams with Dr. U! He is so helpful and gave me advice for doing well in the class. Do not hesitate to ask him for help if you struggle at all. You can learn so much!
I'm usually an A student and struggled with the tests in this class, no matter how hard I studied the book & notes. If you can avoid him, do it.
Dr. Upadhyaya is a fantastic professor. He has more energy and livelihood than any other professor I've ever had, you can tell he really does love Biology. He really gets excited when he discussing cell mechanisms and such. His tests are known as being some of the hardest at USF however as long as you follow along and study, you will be fine.
He's a nice enough guy, but his tests are RIDICULOUS. He tests on his lectures as well as the book. He's one of those professors where his exams have a warning at the beginning saying "Pick the answer that BEST answers the question" and all 5 answer choices could potentially answer the question. If you have him, read the textbook it helps.
If you're okay with a B then take him but if you really want an A there are easier professors for Biology. As per usual college classes are hard and you're going to need to really study his lecture. I learned a lot from him but since his test a worded tricky my grade does not reflect what I learned. I technically got a B+ but bc of his scale B.
Dr. Upadhyaya is a very good lecturer, his tests can be difficult if you struggle with the material. Most of the information you need is in his lecture notes but you need to pay attention so you know the answers to the in-class assignments and canvas quizzes. His enthusiasm makes you want to learn the material if you go to class.
Dr. Upadhyaya was an okay professor but if you want to get an A in Bio I without having to work really hard, find another professor. He knows what he is teaching but doesn't give clear answers when asked a question. I do not think this much effort should have to be put in order to get an A in Bio I but to those who want to be challenged, good luck.
If you want an A find a different professor. He is one of the hardest professors i have ever had. He takes the course way to seriously and the tests are very hard. If you do take him prepare to work.
Dr. U is very animated and excited about biology, which made for very interesting lectures. His tests were pretty straight-forward -- just complete the outlines that he posts online and study those along with the slides, and you should do well. His quizzes can be tough at times, but are fair, and he offered a quiz for 2% extra credit on a book.
Upahyaya is the perfect professor for students who ACTUALLY want to learn and work hard. He's a nightmare professor if you go into the class looking to just do the bare minimum. I thought his lectures were great, he keeps the material fun with his animations and antics. Tests will be a little tricky, so know that going in, and study the material.
Dr. U is definitely lecture heavy. DO NOT take this class if you are not willing to take lots of notes and really earn that A. His exams are difficult and consist of "all of the above are true" or "one or more are true" so really know the material. Take if you are willing to be an active and involved student. I wouldn't recommend otherwise.
took him for bio 1. I thought he was a great professor, very excited about the subject and a very animated lecturer. dont listen to anyone who says his tests are really hard, you just have to take good notes in class and read the text book and youll do fine.
Dr. U's lectures are great and hilarious and they make you really wanna listen! He gives out random pop quizzes during mass lectures so be there! But tests are SUPER tricky! I've never had bio and so that's prob why I didn't do well but there were students who did do fine, but I failed in his class bc of his exams! Office hours help but not enough.
Upadhyaya isn't too bad of a professor to listen to but sometimes he starts to bombard you with information and blow through slides like it's nothing. His tests are the hardest part because you can study every slide and every page of the book but his questions go into detail very often. So if you don't know every bit of info in the book, good luck.
I think there are more than 3 tags for this guy. I'm telling you if you care about your sanity don't take him. I know he cares and he's nice, but don't fall for it his exams are extremely difficult. He makes the test harder than it really should be. I have 276 students in my class and every test he gives back is 70-75 avg hardly a curve is given
Dr. Upadhyaya is an amazing and thorough lecturer. If you truly want to learn biology down to the deepest detail, take bio with him. His test questions ask things word for word like he covers in lecture 100%, so if you attend the lectures, take great notes, and know them by heart, you will pass. I would definitely take another class with him.
Your grade is 80% of your tests. He creates his own exams and the questions are what he says in class rather than whats in the book. If you're struggling he'll try to help as much as he can during office hours. In my opinion, Dr. U made the class a lot harder than it needed to be
The way he teaches is very easy to digest. Would recommend.
Most amazing professor I've had the chance to take at USF. Four exams, one final, final grade (if higher) replaces lowest grade. 9 quizzes, 1 dropped. I was a microbiology major until taking this class with Dr. Upadhyaya and now I'm CMMB because I wanted to take every class he offered. Cell biology isn't an easy A no matter who you take.
His lectures are not clear and he show attitude to students. Office hours are not usually helpful. Test are hard. I would not take this professor.
I think that everyone's too hard on this professor. I took his class last semester and absolutely LOVED his lectures. I looked forward to lectures and enjoyed the enthusiasm with which he taught. His lectures are very content-heavy and you are expected to pay very close attention, so NEVER SKIP CLASS! Secret to an A in his class: LECTURE NOTES!!
He is a really bad professor that has bad exams with useless slides. You could be present in his class and still not understand anything. He just seems like he talks to himself while he teaches. Not respectable and shows attitude to students, would no way consider taking him again or convince anyone to take him again. Just terrible.
His review sheet is misleading and is totally useless. He thinks high of himself and shows a lot of attitude when you try to reach out to him. Would not recommend.
He is passionate about what he teaches, but this class is tough because the test are conceptual and forces one to make connections not specified in class or reading. He cares and is always there when needed. Will curve test but only a few points. Study guides and reviews provided but again test are conceptual.
i think he was okay! just go to lecture !the book doesn't really help a lot. It's alllllll about what he says in class. record him if you can and pay attention. not hard but not super easy ! I liked him as a bio teacher !
Format is 84%: 5 tests w/ 1 final and 1 drop grade. Other 16% is made of online quizzes. No curve. Both the tests and the quizzes are really hard. But the tests ask such specific questions on such a broad range of material. The lecture notes aren't even that relevant, he pulls a ton of info from the book. Extremely difficult professor to study for.
One of the hardest professors I've had during my entire time in college. Takes forever to grade any assignments he gives out. Test are insanely hard. The book is pretty useless attend class and pay attention to his lectures, record if you can. Snappy when student reaches out to him. Definitely would not take a course with him or recommend him.
Great professor, very passionate and knowledgable about his subject. I've taken him for three courses so far and I really enjoy him. His tests are difficult but if you attend every lecture and study hard it's definitely doable.
Very hard professor, very detailed exams. His class will decrease your GPA
He's an amazing professor, but his test are really hard ... like really hard. You will have to study about a week long in order to receive a good grade on a test. He does offer extra credit and does drop one test grade but it does not really matter because he does flat grades (meaning no plus or minus system) which will influence your GPA.
I loved Dr Upadhyaya, he was wacky but in an eclectic biology genius way. I thought his tests were fair and his lectures were interesting. All you need to do is read the book and go to class
This man is extremely intelligent. I just followed along with the lectures and took very detailed notes. I practically wrote down everything he said. Study your notes hard and the exams will not be too bad.
Dr. U is probably one of the best professors I've had @ USF. You HAVE to dedicate A LOT of time into this course & you will have to utilize his resources that he provides on canvas. His exams are almost entirely lecture-based. I would take a class w/ Dr. U again bc he's a great teacher and his course really improved my study habits.
best science professor I've ever had, but by far the hardest class I've taken at USF. He really makes you work for the A. With that said, he gives you every thing you need. If you truly understand the lectures, pay attention in class, and go to office hours you'll be set. RECORD. THE. LECTURES.
His grading system was very difficult to follow, for being an online class and having two in class exams which were the main grade for the course so if you do not do well on the exams but do well on the modules you will still not get higher than a C+ possibly a B-. His explanations for his grading policy continued to change during the course.
Took him for Bio 1 in freshman year and loved it. People scared me at first by saying he's tough and all, but i was able to pull an A by just studying the powerpoints, my lecture notes, and study guides. All the material on each test has been gone over in lecture. Drops the lowest exam (even the final). Grade scale has no pluses or minuses.
Hands down my most favored professor. His lectures consist of lots of information that get stuck to your head through laughter. This guy is a legend. He makes everything funny and easy to remember. He is very engaging and always energetic. Very good teacher. Honestly, if you only attend his lectures and pay attention, you wont need to study at all
If you actually want to learn biology, I wouldn't recommend this class. Dr. U only tests on what he goes over in the lectures and skips a lot of the textbook. The questions test whether or not you attended lectures rather than your biology knowledge. He takes forever to grade and is hard to contact outside of class. I passed b/c I attended all lecs
Dr U is so funny and makes his lectures really engaging. His tests are based on the lectures so you need to go to class to pass the tests, just studying the powerpoints won't work. Buying the book isn't necessary but it is helpful.
Good professor, but can be vague on what he wants and implies that you need to know a lot more details. His teaching style is a little different than normal, but he's passionate about the subject and if you enjoy molecular biology you will too! Really study your NOTES, and only take the book as a reference for more detail, that was my mistake.
Dr. Upadhyaya is a really good professor. If you take notes during lecture and study it, then you will definitely pass his class. His test questions are more in-depth of the topics he cover in class. So study well and you will definitely get an A in this class.
Dr. Upadhyaya is definitely very enthusiastic about Biology and he keeps the class interesting! However, he makes the exam based on what he says in Lecture and, even then, the exams are considerably more difficult than what he says. To get an A in this class you really have to study as much as possible.
Great teacher! He makes the lectures very entertaining. He knows his stuff, so feel free to ask him any questions. Your grade will be made up mostly by your tests so study hard and you'll do fine! Don't miss lectures because tests are lecture-based.
He is pretty funny (unintentionally). He knows his material and has a real passion for genetics. This is not a class you can skip or sleep during and then expect to do well in. Pay attention to his notes and study and you will do fine.
I love Dr. U! I highly recommend him. He is so passionate and really knows his stuff. Just a warning: you need to go to class and take good notes. If it comes out of his mouth, it'll be on the test. This is great for auditory learners. He is genuinely caring and nice if you see him in office hours.
Dr. U is a wonderful profess who really knows his stuff! I love his lectures, they're entertaining and hes funny without even trying. His tests are pretty hard and detailed, so you really need to study as much as you can and actually understand the concepts, not just memorize definitions. No plus/minus grading too. id take him again though!
Dr. Upadhyaya is primarily a verbal professor. If that is not your style, take a different professor. He has powerpoint slides but they are usually not up to date and very topical / filled with diagrams. Attendance is "mandatory" - you can read the book and still pass the class. There are no clicker questions. He also tells a lot of Dad jokes.
I took Dr U for BSC2010 and absolutely loved him! His teaching style is auditory and what he says is more likely on the exam than his slides. The best way to get an A in his class is take notes and record the lectures, go home and fill in your notes from your recordings, and listen to his lectures while studying. Definitely taking him for genetics.
Dr. U is a very nice and down to earth person, but he doesn't do the greatest job at teaching. He says a lot of important points in class that will show up on exams, so it's worth going and writing down everything he says. Exams are very difficult and pull straight from the book.
Dr. Upadhyaya is a man that knows his field. He goes into detail and gives good lectures to support the reading. I never read the textbook for this class, and only used it for the schematic pictures of the pathways. You will do well if you pay attention to his lectures. Most of the material he talks about in class will show up in the test.
I took him for Bio 1 and Cell Bio. You have to pay attention in lecture. I never use the book. Take his class if you want to learn and if you are genuinely interested in bio, don't take it if you are only interested in fulfilling requirements. If you don't fully understand something, ask in person. Biology isn't easy. You have to put in the effort.
Had him for Bio 1. His lectures are always really thorough and easy to follow along with. The tests are based solely on his lectures, which he tells you in the beginning of the semester, so do not buy a textbook. Quizlet is your best friend for this course. The only bad part is the grading system makes it difficult to get an A, and no + or - given.
Hes a wonderful lecturer. Hes so passionate about biology and it shows, I love coming to his class. The only thing I dont like is how hard his tests are, hell be my first B ever, but Id still take his class again because I love his lectures so much. Hes funny w/o trying and he really makes biology interesting. U need every detail for tests!
He is very bad about conveying information because he is extremely hyperactive and lectures consist of 125 slides in which most of them are meaningless to exams.
The key to this professor is RECORD EVERYTHING. If you play back his recordings later and review the PowerPoint's you should get an A in the class. His tests are hard and include a lot of " all of the above" and " some of the above" answer choices. However, he curves his exams heavily. He is enthusiastic, fair, and always willing to help.
So he's a good person and cares about the students but his class was hard as he'll I'm good with science and math subjects in general but with him I had a D all semester and I barely got it up to a C with the final his tests are super hard and specific and his noted don't have enough information to study from so slides aren't enough for the tests
The person below me couldn't have said it any better. I've gotten higher grades in Orgo and Biochem than this class because of his teaching style. He's definitely a character though, but don't let that fool you because his exams are extremely hard. This class entails not just studying what you have learned but going more in depth about it to pass.
This class was all lectures and your grade consisted of quizzes, which he provided the questions to beforehand to help you prepare, and exams which he gives reviews on. He requires 2 textbooks but the Why We Age is the one where the most reading is done so save your money on the course textbook because he provides good lectures.
This was my 2nd time taking Upadhyaya and it will be my last. The way he words his quiz/exam questions and answers is designed to make you fail. It doesnt matter how well you know the material if the question is designed to trick you. He asks about the tiniest specific details and hell be adjusting his slides (100s btw) the night before an exam.
Dr. U isnt bad, but he loves to lecture and often gets off topic. His tests arent that difficult, but dont necessarily correlate with the lectures.
Out of the other bio teacher that USF has I think hes the best choice. You really gotta study for his tests tho. His tests are HARD. if he says it once in lecture, expect it to be on the exam. I would recommend going to his office hours for any little thing. He really helps you with the content and wont stop trying to explain it until it
Dr. Upadhyaya was super nice. He will let you come by his office to discuss what you did wrong on tests and often curves the test grades by 5-10 points each. I can't say it was an easy A because biology itself is pretty difficult, but I think this professor made it as easy as possible. Solid choice.
Really amazing professor. You need to attend every single class to have a chance at passing. The textbook is also mandatory and is critical to nail down material. His lectures are a bit fast so if you can't keep up that might be something to be wary of. His exams are difficult. An hour of studying isn't going to cut it, study, study.
Tests are EXTREMELY hard if you have no background in biology. Everything covered in the lecture is on the test, but in a more in depth way. He will curve the test around 10 points each time. The average end class grade was a 76.8.
His classes are always test heavy. This was my second time taking him. He knows what he is talking about and is always respectful to the students. He if you have questions, he is always willing to answer them. With that being said, his class is difficult. You have to make sure you go to class because his exams are based on what he says.
Pro. Upadhyaya knows his materials well. To pass his class, you will have to do the review sheet carefully. The things he talks about will be in the test. However, for me, his lecturing was really boring. Overall, he is not good at lecturing but he know his stuffs.
Pay attention in lecture because everything in class is on the test but you have to learn the material further in depth on your own which he doesnt tell you
Dr. U posts all of his slides online but you still have to go to class because he tests on details that he adds on during lecture. If you miss class you're in bad shape for the exam unless you have a friend who will send you notes. His exams are okay, some questions are straightforward and some are tricky because of the answer choices.
If you end up taking his class I would recommend recording the lectures. He posts the slides online but a lot of what he tests on is based on the details he gives in class. I recorded the lectures and listened to them and took notes closer to the exam date and although that took a lot of time it was really helpful. He drops your lowest exam grade
Dr. U is a nice man and is helpful. However, he is really out to get you with his tests. His tests are specific, that even the smallest detail could be on them. A lot of the questions have a lot of two of the above are correct and/or all of the above are correct, so it confuses the students. Also he doesn't calculate grades so youre kinda lost.
Exams are 80%, Quizzes are 16%, in class activities are 4% of your grade. Quizzes&exams are impossible. he will take off points for little things. He will not answer your emails when you ask for help. First bio fail for me, I have to retake the class in the fall and I will not be taking him ever again. STAY AWAY. There are better professors.
This professor is the worst I have had at USF. His syllabus is unclear, he does not answer emails, and his exams are incredibly difficult. Exams are worth 80% of the grade and he does not provide the students with everything they need to succeed. You must have excellent work ethic, perseverance, and study skills to do well in this class.
He's a nice man and clearly masters the content, but I wouldn't say he's the best professor. The lectures are okay, his tests are worth nearly 80% of your grade and they are HARD (class test avg. 70%). He didn't follow the syllabus that well which left students lost at times. He also doesn't show your grade, you have to calculate it yourself.
Okay so don't take this class unless you are willing to memorize what he says in lecture because that is your grade. Take good notes and memorize them. The review sheets and textbooks are useless for the exam. Try to do better on the rest of other assignments most of the answers can be found online like quizlet and coursehero.
He's a good lecture based teacher but I hated his random deadlines and randomly giving quizzes with little warning. He also doesn't have a set syllabus to follow and you don't ever really know your true grade in the class. I especially didn't like how he would rush through 4+ chapters at once before a test and expect you to know it all.
Dr. U is a very passionate lecturer who is obviously very knowledgeable. Class attendance is not required but if you want to pass GO TO CLASS because what he says in lecture will come up on exams. An exam grade is dropped, as well as a few other grades. Some people said he was very rude when they asked questions but I never experienced that.
If you have the oppurtunity to take another Bio Professor then do it! His test are extremely challenging no matter how much you study. He assigns reading the book chapters but honestly thats useless he only test you on what he SAYS in class. His quizzes are MC but there are often 6 or more answer choices. You must know even the most minute details.
Very difficult, because of that his office hours are always packed with people. Yet if you do well with Dr. U, it should set you up to do really well in future bio exams. Take him, it will be worth the struggle in the end.
I had him for Genetics last fall. His test are pretty difficult but to do well on them, you HAVE to go to class and take thorough notes, as well as study his slides. My first exam grade was a 72 using the book. Began taking thorough notes and studying only his slides and got A's on the rest of the exams. His quizzes are hard though, so get a group.
Took him for Bio 1 and I have to say it was the hardest course I took in my first year of college. In order to pass his exams you need to study like crazy since a lot of the questions are based on you truly mastering the content. He does drop the lowest exam grade but the final cannot be dropped so do well on that. Make sure you record lectures.
Dr. Upadhyaya is not an easy professor, but if you are looking to learn, he's your guy. Dr. U is passionate about the material, but one annoying part is that he always starts lectures late. He lets you record lectures, which is helpful. Plus he adds a curve to every exam to boost your grade. Also, the grading scale is a generous; a 90 is an A.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM. Take Eric Sikorski instead!!! His test are nothing like the review but based on what he says in class. Plus he is not organized at all. He will rush through 4-5 chapters just so he can include those in the test. Just don't take him, unless you want to memorize everything he says and still get a bad grade on the exam.
Recording lectures is unnecessary. I'll admit, his lectures are a bit dull, but he's an amazing professor in person. I got a 97 in this class by : 1. making detailed flashcards (sets of 200-300 terms) 2. watching lots of biology videos. His tests may be challenging (5-8 ambiguous questions), but they're pretty straightforward for the most part.
Great professor. His lectures can be content heavy, but he frequently stops lectures to asks if anyone has questions. He tries to get everyone engaged in the lectures and will even walk up the stairs towards the back. He's very enthusiastic & explains concepts well. He reminds students of assignments due at the beginning of classes 10/10 recommend.
Not a fan of he teaches. Makes things more convoluted than they actually are.
He wouldn't curve my grade less than half of a percent so that I would be able to pass the class. Does not use the +/- system
Just an odd guy, but nice. Can be confusing sometimes, but I'm sure if you go to his office hours (I didn't) he can explain. Just kinda a middle of the road instructor. In his lectures he emphasizes what he wants you to know frequently.
Dr. U is an AMAZING professor! Hes passionate and knowledgeable. He explains concepts very thoughroughly and makes himself available outside of class even if its a Saturday! he doesnt give half grades it was full grades onlyI missed my A by only 1.7% and he wouldnt budge when asked to consider assigning one more assignment to gain that 1.7%.
This class was so stressful for no reason, his lectures are what's on the exams but the exams are so hard. He is a nice guy but just don't take Bio with him because it's extremely hard to pass when taking other classes too.
Dr. U is knowledgeful of Biology, but the subject/class itself is difficult. Attend and record his lectures, study them with your notes, and do the assignments when he recommends you to in order to not stress. The course is difficult for a good grade, and you should study this course everyday if you can to master the material.
Whatever you do DO NOT take this professor. He is fine at explaining but his tests are way too hard. Almost 20% of the class gets an F on every test. The grade you get on the tests are a major part of your final grade. Doesn't have fail in the class. He even said to drop the class if we failed the first test. Just don't take him smh.
Go to class and pay attention to what he says. Do the assignments he gives and read when assigned. You'll be fine.
I took Dr. Upadhyaya for Molecular Biology of the Gene PCB 4026. His exams are extremely difficult and unfortunately an unfair grader. His exams have short answer questions and I found it surprising that he doesn't give partial credit. His quizzes should be a buffer for our exam grade however, they are near impossible to get a full grade.
Ignore any positive comments about this man. DO NOT under ANY circumstance take his course.
For all the comments say he is bad, those students didn't study. However the test is hard, but there is a way to get an A in class that I'm sure not many people do. RECORD THE LECTURE. Watch through it multiple times. In high school I didn't even take a single Bio class and have no clue, but by recording the lecture: easy A.
Dr. U is one of those professors where he just dumps all the information and expects you to keep up with the material. He WILL test you on material that he did not cover in lecture, because he expects you do learn it yourself even though the class ran out of time. Testing style is awful; it seems almost like I had to re-learn how to take exams.
Key Concept: This guy uses key concept so much that basically the entire textbook becomes a Key Concept. Jokes aside, Upadhyaya is medicore at best. He's not very good at explaining certain concepts, and tends to digress a lot so its a good idea to read the textbook for clarity and organization of the information.
I think Dr. U is a hit or miss for most students. Attendance is not mandatory, but his tests are mostly based on his lectures. He does a great job in preparing enough resources to get his students ready for the exams. He also jokes a lot during lectures so they are not boring. I think he's one of the best for BSC 2010 at USF.
1. You will either love him or hate him. 2. Tests are very challenging bc he is looking for VERY specific details. However, I promise you that if you seriously pay attention DURING LECTURE and study ALL the material intensely by doing the review questions you'll pass with an A or a B. 3. Do all assignments! They will help your grade in the end.
He is very nice and really tries to help a student if you reach out. However, his test are much harder than what is taught in lectures. Almost all of the grade is made up of 4 tests. This is a class that you have to put in a lot of time outside of class to get right but luckily he is somewhat easy to reach outside of class and is willing to help.
Dr. U is an amazing professor that genuinely cares about the success of his students. He challenges his students through his exams, but will never test on something that was not mentioned in class. Also incredibly helpful outside of class, in his office hours, and responds super quick to emails!
This class was absolutely ridiculous. During the COVID-19 crisis he sprung many things on us last minute and was not at all accommodating. Tells you that you only need to know the concepts for the class but will ask extremely specific details on exams. Good luck honestly. I fought hard for my B.
He seems nice, but he went off topic very often and makes the material confusing. Basically had to teach myself the material. I strongly recommend reading the textbook because the text is way easier to understand than his lectures. Although attendance isn't required, his exams rely heavily on lectures. So show up! Good luck, folks.
Dr. U is a very engaged in the content. However, he poorly accommodates the students and their grades. He often posts last minute lectures/assignments; with this, it seems his expectations are as if you are only taking his class for the entire semester. Unless you are an excellent test taker/self learner, I suggest looking elsewhere. Seriously bad
Never have I experienced a professor that plans so poorly and tests so convoluted than Prof. U. His lectures imo struggle to convey the overarching lessons and he dwells too much on too small details that can bog you down/confuse you during studying. His tests are poorly worded so the questions are difficult to interpret. Highly do not recommend.
Absolutely the most inconsiderate professor at USF does not care one bit about students especially in taking the course in the midst of the 2020 pandemic professor did nothing but make it harder on the students by reminding us of an exam not once in any lectures but the day before the test.
During the COVID-19 quarantine this professor posted due assignments and quizzes ONE day before our exam. He also posted multiple lecture recordings (that will be on the exam) ONE day before our exam. His poor planning skills make for a difficult time in passing the class. He tops my "worst professor" at USF. I highly do not recommend!!!
Upadhyaya is a very frustrating professor to deal with. It seems his perspective of the students is that we are only taking his class throughout the entire semester. He is very passionate about teaching, but he fails to do so and almost seems like he does not care for the students nor them passing. I suggest avoiding this professor at all costs.
He is the worst of all worse. Don't take him.
Professor is very passionate about Biology, but fails to teach at an introductory level. His exams are unfairly difficult, and this is coming from a person who is an A student. First B I will be receiving in a very long time. Highly do NOT recommend, he is very scatter-brained which is not good because his exams are on lectures
Cell Biology: 80% exams, 20% quizzes and small assignments. Posts an entire chapter and a half worth of lecture 24 hours before the exam and expects you to master it. You'd think with COVID he'd lighten up a little, but instead he has made the class buckle up and get ready for even more than before when the class was in person.
Took cell bio during COVID-19. Dr. U was EXTREMELY unaccommodating. He posted lectures a day before the exam, never responded to emails, and made his tests even harder than they were when we were in person. Avoid at all costs
Well where do I even start. I took this class during COVID-19 and just let me start of by saying it was awful. His tests are all lecture based and if you dont attend lecture you will fail. Since we had to transition to online classes due to the pandemic, his tests became much harder online than they were in person. AVOID!
Dr. U is a wonderful person who is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about teaching biology. He is fair and honestly, you are able to get an A if you simply pay attention during lectures. The transition to online learning has made his exams much harder but the first half of the semester was excellent. He is fair, caring, funny and generous
I felt like I had to read the whole textbook to get a C on his tests. His quizzes, homework, and lectures barely similar to his tests. He has currently not responded to my 6 emails which are now useless now that the final exam is over. His lectures were only corresponding to the final exam. Very bad at responding to questions you have about bio.
He is definitely willing to help outside of class, but his tests are difficult!! Took him for Bio 1 and we learned basic concepts in Biology but you really have to know the content in order to pass the exams. Would not recommend because there are other professors for BSC201 0 who are known for having more easier exams and course work requirements.
Professor is very nice but not considerate when it comes to students preparing for exams. He post tons of lectures 24h before an exam and expects the students to know 1-2 chapters overnight, unfair. Students have other classes & responsibilities. Will curve exams, very minimal though. I would take him again but with a different game plan. Good Luck
Dr. U is my favorite professor at the University. This was my second course with him and he is simply amazing at what he does and is extremely passionate about biology. With this, you will not pass if you do not attend, record, and re-listen to every second of every lecture. Overall, highly recommend Dr. U only if you are ready to work! Good luck:)
Ended up with an A but Dr. U was an extremely frustrating professor. Very unaccommodating during the pandemic, and overcomplicates everything on his exams. In person lectures are good but his tests are over the top.
I ended up with an A but Dr U is an extremely frustrating guy. In person lectures were good but he doesn't prepare you for his tests at all. Very unaccommodating during the pandemic
During the online learning transition, he would often upload lectures 2 days after class time. One time he completely forgot to upload the lecture until the weekend without any notice. I would NEVER EVER take this guy again. I'm surprised he's still teaching.
I think it's unfair to rate a professor based on the pandemic situation only. Yes, he did handle the online-learning poorly, but the in-person lectures were good, he was engaging and did provide extra materials like reviews. Make sure to record everything he says as well as the information in the powerpoints if it's not online.
Dr. U's exams are based mostly off of his lectures, so attend class. Just write down everything he says in lecture and study that, and you'll ace every exam. He curved every exam this semester, and he drops one. He's a great professor and I couldn't recommend him enough for Bio 1. His lectures are interesting and he's very passionate about bio
Even during the COVID situation this semester, he was helpful. His exams didn't change, and stayed at the same level of difficulty that they were in class. He held office hours every week and provided enough material to do well. While he was late uploading lectures, he held office hours on exam day. I recommend Dr. U, I ended the course with a 99.
Dr. U is nice, and has lots of energy when he lectures. He's at his office when you need him and he responds quickly to emails . There are 3 tests, among many other assignments. He drops the lowest grade for each type of assignment, and there's a slight curve for each test. Make sure you write down and/or record everything he says for the test.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He's condescending, and believes that everyone needs to completely master all the detailed specifics of Biology like him. His tests are entirely meant to trick you. And no one knows their true grade till the end of the semester due to him disabling the canvas grading calculator, which makes zero sense in a normal world.
The biggest issue with this professor is he rambles on and on without saying much of importance for too much time. There was no speed-up feature on his videos either to help with this. The study material is crap because it functions better as a teaching tool rather than studying, because he doesn't provide the answers to the questions.
ignore any and every good rating/feedback about this professor. he is the worst professor I have ever come across in my life.
LECTURE HEAVVYYYYYYY.
If you're looking for a sign telling you that you shouldnt take Bio with this guy, this is the sign. DONT DO IT
hardest class ive ever taken. The content itself isnt difficult but the exams are difficult, confusing, and specific. I would study the material for days and memorize every detail i could and still struggle bc the questions are so specific that a lot of the material you studied isnt even on there but questions will ask about most minor details
He's a really respectful guy that wants you to succeed! Study his lectures (INCLUDING THE DIAGRAMS IN HIS POWERPOINT SLIDES) and quiz solutions (including diagrams, I'm serious) like the bible and you're good to go :)
I genuinely do not understand the good reviews written. Dr. U rarely responds to emails, is known for uploading exam lectures less than 24 hours before the exam, and also known for being condescending in the emails he does respond to. Exams are worth about 80% of the grade. Wording in exams are meant to trick you. He does not want you to succeed.
There are pros and cons to this class. If you are looking for a relatively easy professor he is not your guy. I do think that he is a fair professor. If you have a strong background in chemistry (chem 1 and chem 2), and you can listen to hours and hours of recorded lectures while taking in-depth notes you will get an A. Watch lectures twice!!!!!!!
You need to do well on every test. He explains things very well, but the lectures are very long and boring. Understand every detail said in lectures. The tests can be really tricky, but you will get an A if you master the lectures. He doesn't respond to emails and posts long lectures at the last minute, this class will take up all your time.
Dr. U was never quick to respond to emails and oftentimes did not answer at all. That was very frustrating given I took his Summer C course online during COVID. He oftentimes spoke disrespectfully to students and told us at the beginning of the class that he expected people to fail. Also this is a "no +/-" grading scale class so beware of your GPA.
I took this class during the summer of Covid and Dr. Upadhyaya was really helpful. He was easy to reach during office hours/email and curved tests. If you understand the concepts on the lecture, you'll be prepared for the test. He also sets you up well for Orgo 1.
Tests aren't too bad, however he is unwilling to help students further understand topics. He usually repeats the same statement without further elaboration. He is nearly impossible to get a hold of as well. He also has no idea how canvas works and refuses to upload course materials on time (like the syllabus) and refuses to upload your grades.
Although his lectures are all asynchronous for COVID, he wants you to be available for a specific time as if the lectures were synchronous. Meanwhile he is routinely late at posting the lectures and usually uploads them randomly hours later or a day or two late. Overall, he is very disrespectful and can't even do his own job right. Avoid this clown
Dr.U is the nicest teacher I have had. I got 100% in his class by doing the following. Review your quizzes before the exam, he does not recycle questions, however, concepts will be the same. Record his lectures, because these are the real gems for his class. Nothing on the exam will be about something not said in the lecture.
I had to drop this class because I fell way behind. The lectures are super important to pass the exams, if you don't pass the exams you won't pass the class. He was nice enough to talk to me before I dropped the class but this professor was definitely not the right fit for me. Everything moves super fast and exams are based off a couple of chapters
I usually am so great at STEM classes (and this may just be because it is online) but this class is so difficult. He words test questions with hopes to trick you. I wish I had the time to solely focus on this, but even then I don't think I would get a better grade. And he can take a while to answer your emails.
I had him during COVID, so online, he posted a ton of lectures that covered the material. He is funny, and has open office hours for anyone that had questions. You definitely need to study for his class. You have to read the textbook, take notes, etc. His exams are 50 questions and usually curves them by 8%. He's nice, but his class can be hard.
I was wary to take his class online but he is amazing. He posted lecture videos you could watch at your own pace (no live lecture yay!) which were short videos and very easy to follow. Each chapter had a review sheet for the exam (i filled these out while watching videos). Quiz questions were given prior to actual quiz so you can easily pass!
Absolute trash would never take it again. The lectures are prerecorded and are SOOOOO long. He doesnt offer extra credit except for a bonus quiz which does basically nothing for you. The exams are SO specific and go into SO much depth they arent your average basic knowledge questions so be prepared for that. The study guides are heavy too.
Do not recommend this professor at all. I think he likes to play mind games on students. The test questions have answer options like a, b, c, a and b, more than one answer is correct, none of the above, or all of the above... like come on. He is also awful at responding to emails so 0/10 for that. Also no extra credit so good luck.
Let me start by saying you have to calculate ur own grade in this class which is automatically aggravating. He put so
The worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't teach chapters and leaves them on the tests without saying they will be on it. The syllabus said office hours were Mondays and Wednesdays. I went in, waited an hour outside his office, he doesn't show. I emailed later that night and he just emailed me back T/TH! No apology or anything. Very disrespectful.
Alright, ill be real with you. if you study your butt off you'll get a B on the exams. he writes them the night before so they usually have errors. he usually adds about 6-12 points as a curve to exams. i encourage you to write out what he says in the lectures and not base your studying off of the powerpoints. you wont fail.
Horrible experience. Grade was all based off of difficult exams and quizzes. He would give recordings for chapters right before an exam and expect you to learn it in time. In general questions are insanely hard, as someone would say he would have so many answers as both a and b are right along side all answers are right which is too confusing.
Gives exam review for each chapter. Gives quiz questions prior to quiz so you know EXACTLY what is on quiz. Posts keys for quiz after to study from. Lectures are clear and concise. Exams are easy (proctored). He is amazing. The people that complain obviously don't actually watch the lecture videos or use his reviews or quiz worksheets. Curves a lot
He curves each exam and gives great exam reviews for each chapter covered. Gives out quiz questions prior to quiz so you know EXACTLY what is on the quiz. Lectures are posted prior to exams and easy to review. Exams based exactly on lectures, watch them! TIP: fill out chapter reviews while watching lecture videos, good notes rubric and study tool
BMS major. LOVED this class. He posts detailed lectures instead of having live class, and had office hours during course time. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, theres always ppl asking questions and he sometimes gives mini lectures. Take good notes on lectures, actually TRY on the quizzes/hw, and use textbook/notes for study guides. Final grade was 103% !
I would recommend to not take this class if you have other time-consuming subjects like chemistry/calc/stats, unless you're good at those subjects and can dedicate time to this class. Super lecture heavy and heavy on tests. You need to put in work for this class. He is a nice guy, but the class itself is difficult. Go to office hours!
I dont recommend taking this professor if you have a lot of other things to worry about because he works at a very fast speed and he is extremely hard to follow. I felt that most of his lectures didnt make sense and the way he taught made online learning even more difficult. I would recommend a different professor.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. His tests are nothing like the material given, the class assignments, quizzes, or study guides. He is not helpful at all. Many people have withdrew from his course. If you can take bio cellular processes with any other teacher DO IT.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had at USF. The lectures were useless he rambles a lot and the information he gives on the slides with no audio are pointless & difficult to understand because they aren't formatted correctly. The only thing that is mildly beneficial is the review sessions he does. Proctored confusing tests. Avoid taking.
The worst.
I did everything he asked for to study for exams and I still ended with Bs and Cs, when I asked about what else I could do he told me to get a tutor. Had supplementary lectures during office hours that gave an advantage to students who went such as announcements, exam breakdowns, and sometimes exam questions. this is ON TOP of the other work. SUCKS
He sucks. If you can avoid taking him do it. I emailed him in concern to an 80 question 120 min closed note final asking for a little consideration to the difficultly and he was a true piece of work with his response. He basically told me I needed to study instead of asking for the possibility to open notes or less questions. He is truly terrible.
I think an 84 question closed note final sums up a good enough reason as to why you should avoid taking this class with him. Terrible professor. He doesn't care about your grade and he sits on a high horse of he can do what he wants. If you email him concerning your grade he basically tells you to do better. Trash of a teacher take someone else!!!!
He's simply the worst professor I've ever had. It doesn't matter how hard you study if he keeps giving out unnecessary trick worded questions and answer choices on the exams. If he ever says "guys you don't need to know this for the exam" he's lying. You don't really learn in his class you basically have to try to memorize as much as you can.
HARDEST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN! Hes def enthusiastic about the material but the amount of material that is taught and learn for exams is...I cant cuss. Material was interesting but Id recommend taking this course with a light load. He posts a lot of videos and your grade is based on exams, ICAs, and quizzes. He is super disorganized too.
Professor U is definitely tough! you have to take super clear lecture notes since the exams are lecture-based. You take four exams and the lowest one is dropped. Id say he's very enthusiastic about the topic but definitely makes you work for your grade.
Dr. U puts specific details in his exams so I end up having to write down everything he says. He holds review sessions before every exam. His lectures are okay, they kind of drag on and they're separated into individual topics instead of one whole lecture video. He makes you calculate your own grade because he disables canvas grades
This professor is the worst one I have ever had. It is not the hardest class, but exams are a big portion of the grade and the final is 80 questions for a 2 hour test. Many questions include unnecessary trick questions and specific responses. He also does not bother to answer some emails and is an overall disgrace that should not be teaching.
This guy is the BEST professor I've had at USF. His lectures are both amazing and detailed. Yes his exams are hard and he makes you understand the material. Welcome to real life. I think the same couple of people may be leaving multiple reviews for him. His class is not impossible but you have to WORK to get an A. He emphasizes YOUR LEARNING.
I almost didn't take this class because of the reviews. He's amazing the exams are literally the core concepts from the lectures. To the review that claims to have emailed him asking for easier exams, the exams are not that hard. Just wait until you take Statistics or Chemistry. I feel like this Biology class really prepares you for future courses.
Dr. U is a great professor. Still taking his course as of now, and I find it the best course I've ever taken at USF. Truly a teacher who loves his job, and it's infectious. Tests are based entirely on the lectures, no surprises. His quizzes are given the questions beforehand so you can work on them. Holds review sessions and lots of office hours.
Literally the best professor I have ever had if you came to university to LEARN. His lectures are bar none the best lectures I've had at USF. So informative and if you love bio and are fascinated by the topic he will excel your knowledge way past your average Bio 1 student. With that being said HCC transfer students are likely to struggle.
Literally an amazing professor. His class is incredibly thorough. He provides presentations backed up by ample opportunities for production. Takes his job very seriously and it pays off. Show up do the work soak up the lectures and not only will you get a good grade you will learn alot. Exams are not hard at all I can't believe the complaints here.
By far the best professor at USF for bio. Take his class if you want to crush the bio section on the MCAT. Clear and detailed lectures. Tests are not that hard. Extra credit is basically a quiz on an 100 pg. book which is a super easy read. Homework allows multiple tries. He is a little tough love oriented but hey that's life. Class was outstanding
He doesn't tell you when he uploads assignments to mylab which, if we were in class would be something different. But because we are online, this guy is the laziest professor I've seen. He just posts videos of the powerpoints that are so slow and tedious to get through and his exams rely on watching the lectures. Just do live lectures
"Laziest professor ever" dude pick a new major. This guys lectures are bar none the best lectures I've had at USF. If you are watching his lectures and thinking "this is boring" then stop taking biology altogether. He sets you up for literally all your upper level requirements which are taught by much worse professors. Also be an adult check HW.
I had Dr. Upadhyaya for Molecular Biology of the Gene. His enthusiasm for the content and energy really helped me get through the class. He's extremely passionate about helping his students. It's a very difficult class, but if you put in the work, you're gonna be okay. Pay attention in lectures and write everything he says down and you're good!
Decent at explaining but rambles a lot and is hard to connect with; will never answer emails or help you out. Horrible experience overall.
Hes nice but hes disorganized and doesnt always make sense in his lectures. He also doesnt answer emails or give much useful help when you need it.
He has very detailed recorded lectures, so I never had to go to class. The test were pretty easy if you memorize most of the content covered in his recorded lectures. His exams are curved and drops the lowest exam out of the 4. Assignments/quizzes aren't too bad, but I still managed to not to do well in them. He does drop the lowest quiz and hw.
Good professor with very good PowerPoint presentations, however exams are very tough. Wont be able to pass the exams with minimal effort, extensive studying is what I found myself doing.
His lectures are paced very slow, which is better than him going so fast you cant comprehend anything. The exams are 100% based on his lectures, you do not need the book at all. Exam material can be based on anything he has ever said in lecture. It is possible to succeed in this course, you just have to put in the work.
Out of all the bio I professors, he's probably the best you're gonna get. He's a nice guy and is genuinely excited about teaching the material. The tests were difficult, but he does curve the tests by a few points. His in person lectures are almost verbatim to the lecture videos he posts on canvas. He tends to explain everything in too much detail
Prepare for no straightforward answers to anything and to struggle on insanely questioned tests that are worth all of your grade. Would not recommend when you could find a professor who can tell you what you need without playing around.
Dr. U is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, but I struggled to understand a lot of the concepts. Tests are weighted 76% of your final grade and all other assignments are worth only 1 or 2 points. It makes it hard to pass the class if you aren't a good test taker. He drops the lowest test, quiz + hw grades. He was also hard to reach by e-mail.
Dr. Upadhyaya is engaged in the class and wants you to succeed. His exams and quizzes are all based on the lectures and some out from the book. He posts powerpoints which I help and attending the review sessions will really help with what you need to study. However, he is very unorganized and it is very confusing. Would not take again.
He is very disorganized, and his exams are very confusing. He gives multiple choice answers that make you feel like you don't know what you're doing no matter how much you study ... He gives homework, but they don't help at all; they are worth only 2 points (4% of your final grade).
Class structure is 84% exams, 8% quizzes, 8% in-class assignments. Almost all mc questions given in the class have two options of "some of these" and "all of the above". Reads PowerPoints with all info directly pulled from textbook, hardly responds to emails. No EC, no curves, terrible sense of humor. Kicker: No other professor teaches 4024
Amazing. Pre med students take him to prep for upper level bio and MCAT. Not a cakewalk but clear, thorough instruction of the concepts. It's Bio 1 so easy A if you put in the work.
He's probably one of the nicest professors ever and genuinely cares for his students. However, his method of teaching just did not work for me, he tends to ramble and I just didn't get what he was trynna say. Also, his tests questions are really tricky. 4 tests and 9 quizzes and he drops lowest from each category.
Professor Upadhyaya provides a grand overview of Bio 1. His class and exams is structured around his power-points. Taking notes and reviewing his comments throughout class is an excellent way to study for his class. One critique that I will say is that his teaching style is not for everyone.
10/10 best Bio professor ever! Take him!!
Dr. U is literally the best professor I've had. He is super enthusiastic about this class. His lectures are very helpful. If you want to succeed in this class, take it seriously. Study and actually understand the material, and the tests will feel like a piece of cake.
The worst professor Ive ever had. Seems nice at first but really has a sarcastic and cutthroat personality. Assignments/ quizzes are only 1-2 points, so your grade solely relies on tests. I DO NOT recommend taking him for this class, especially if you are a freshman.
His lectures (especially the pre-recorded ones he uploads) are really good and help you understand and relate it to other topics. People say the exams are hard but as long as you either attend lecture or watch the videos its pretty easy.
His class isnt hard necessarily it is just a lot of information. He is VERY lecture heavy. If you watch the lectures and take good notes and study the notes you will be fine. A lot of people do not like him because of this and because they do not want to actually study for the class. He makes it so that you learn the material.
Dr. U is passionate about his field, which makes his lectures engaging. Some people think he rambles too much, but I see it as an opportunity to delve deeper into biological topics. He posts all lectures online which is helpful when reviewing material for tests, and assigns breif same-day and post-lecture assignments. Overall, fantastic teacher.
Dr. U is an amazing professor. He dedicates so much time outside of the class to make sure students succeed, like hosting office hours and review sessions that give hints to portions of the exam. He's very passionate about the subject and is very engaging during lecture.
So nice and very caring. Everyone in these ratings saying tests are tricky is lying. IF YOU SHOW UP TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION YOU WILL GET AN A! Tests are lecture based so show up. If I didnt come i would definitely not get my grade. And he curves too. All my friends that came to class got As and my friends that didnt really come got like B/Cish
Dr. Upadhyaya is a hilariously passionate professor that definitely cares about his students. Cell Bio is graded on test and quizzes, fortunately Dr. U releases a study guide with questions from the textbook, if you complete each of these questions you'll be prepared to pass any of his exams. I recommend still coming to class for the awesome notes
Dont take his class. His lectures are terrible. He basically talks in circles. His test are so unnecessarily confusing. Hell have A, B, C, D, A and B, More than one, All of the above under one question. Homework, quiz, and test questions are also so specific and confusing for literally no reason.
His tests are unbelievably confusing. The powerpoints that he teaches from and the information on the tests do not match at all. I came to him about my grade and how I was performing on tests and basically got criticized on how I was studying and did suggest any new methods on how to improve my grade. Was one of my last credits to graduate too.
Dr. U is a genuinely good professor. You can tell he is passionate about teaching biology and his excitement and high energy throughout the lectures make them go by quickly. Bio 1 in general is just a hefty and expansive class. 76% of your grade is the exams, with one drop, which sucks if you're not a great test taker. Great prof, hard material.
I did not have any background in biology, but I studied very hard. I took this class a year ago, and it is one of the worst classes within three years of studying. He is a really cool professor and very passionate about biology, but the exams are impossible.
He is very passionate and knowledgeable about biology. He tries his best to help us understand the material. Bio 1 is complex. To score well on his exams, you need to understand the concept well. It's not just memorization. If you really want to learn biology in depth, take him. It helps with upper level course when you have good foundation.
Hard to stay focused on lectures, which are dense and slightly repetitive. Quizzes, In Class Assigmnments and Exams have confusing questions, that are easy to miss even if you know the content. Very hard to get perfect scores or A's. He does not turn exams back, so it is hard to review mistakes and study for final exam.
Prof Upadhyaya is enthusiastic and does a good job of making the material in class digestible. The quizzes and in-class assignments are easy as long as you do the sheets ahead of time. Very exam heavy, so make sure you study for those. The only downside is that he rushes toward the end of the lecture but he also starts about 10 minutes late.
He is very passionate and caring and quite funny. He is one of the nicest and most caring professors. The only thing that will be your grade for the course, are quizzes and exams. The exams are difficult, but if you study, it will be okay.
i felt like i had to devote every second of my life to this class and i still did horribly on all of the exams which are basically your entire grade. on the bright side this class made me realize i hated my major
I really enjoyed his class. He puts so much energy and passion into his lectures and was super helpful during office hrs. One thing that I didn't like, however, was the atmosphere he created during exams. I know he has to uphold university policy regarding cheating but not allowing people to turn their heads + constant threats was excessive.
I am very pleased that I had this professor. He makes sure that you fully understand a topic and explains everything in detail. His tests are a little trick and can be confusing at times, but he gives about 10 extra points for each exam and still drops the lowest one. One thing I can say is that if you don't come to class... guarantee you will fail
He is an amazing lecturer. He makes the material easy to understand and facilitates interest. In order to do well in his class you have to be present for all lectures and office hours. He doesn't include info in the slides and will reword what he teaches in class on exams in a hard to understand manner. Can be condescending towards those struggling
If Dr.U's section is open TAKE IT. This is the easiest biology class i've ever taken, Dr. U is very passionate which makes his lectures easy to understand and he posts chapter reviews that help you study for the exams. Take good notes, do the quiz worksheets, and the chapter reviews and I promise you'll pass!
Really funny guy, not a harsh amount of coursework for Bio 1. Gets really jazzed up during his lectures, you can tell how passionate he is
One of the most frustrating aspects of taking an online course is the lack of flexibility from the instructor. This is especially true for this professor, who assigns unscheduled required class-day work that are not reasonable for those that work 12-hour shifts or do not have the time for that same day. Quizzes and tests are very specific.
He is not organized (uploads quizzes, hw, and assignments randomly, no strict schedule), so if you miss work, he makes you feel extremely horrible and isn't understanding. Recorded lectures are LONG. Exams does not reflect material from lectures. Doesn't answer emails on time, also doesn't publish grade on canvas so you'll never know your grade.
Dr. U, while a decent lecturer, seems to care little for students success. I would not recommend taking this course online, as assignments are often posted last minute with no flexibility for working or full schedule students. Tests are ridiculously difficult and full of trick questions that textbook doesn't help with. MyLab is an additionalexpense
NEVER take a core major class online, this class taught me that lesson. The exams were ridiculously hard and despite being worth 76% of our grade a lot of it wasn't on the long lectures. Unless you have the time to watch 18 lectures 3x before each exam you're not going to learn everything you need to know. Just an overall poor experience.
Really bad exams, Near impossible to earn an A in this class, bio 1 isn't that difficult but this class is very bad. professor isn't understanding at all and never replies to emails. wouldn't recommend at all
Took online over summer, difficult tests so just study, lots of lectures but they were online and you could watch them whenever.
He as a professor is fine, however, his lectures barely do anything for the learning of the material. His exams are ridiculously hard, whether you go to class or skip you will still have no idea what is happening. Exams are worth 66% of your grade, nothing gets dropped so if you fail an exam you fail the class.
I took Dr. Upadhyaya's online bio 1 lecture and it was great! All exam content is explicitly from the lectures, which were always short and digestable. He's a funny and charismatic professor and lecturer, and it's clear he has fun teaching the subject. The exams weren't bad (100% lecture content), and homework assignments were easy and useful.
This class was ridiculous. It is extremely hard and if you need above a B, do not take Bio I with Dr. U. I am not sure how he has such a good rating since this class was hell. Bio I is easy, but every assignment, quiz, and test makes you think you know nothing. I went to every lecture and studied weekly. Still could never recieve higher than an 85
Professor Upadhyaya is a genuine and caring professor, his lectures are entertaining. However, his exams are ridiculously difficult. While they are all multiple choice, there are a lot of questions where it is very easy for you as a student to second guess yourself. You have to know the material front to back. If not, you won't pass this class.
Prof Upadhyaya is a very genuine and caring guy, and it's clear he cares about his students. His lectures are also entertaining. However, his exams are ridiculously difficult. You have to know the material from front-to-back, if you don't you will fail. Read the textbook throughout the semester, that is what saved me.
Dr. U is a nice and funny guy. But this doesn't make him the best professor. His lectures include him talking over the week which is fine, but doesn't leave enough time to actually finish the lecture. It feels rushed through every class dumping material on you. Use the textbook for the reviews and go to office hours!
He doesn't show you your grades and takes ages to grade the exams. All of the hw is usually posted the same day it is due, so you frequently forget or don't realize he posted it. His ppt are useless for studying and the lectures help very little in the exam. However he is a nice person and will gladly help you in his office hours.
Dr U rambles on and on about nothing that is covered on the test. If you ask questions he is rude and replies with condescending questions. Horrible lectures and the slides are not helpful. He does not provide a practice exam like other professors, nor a study guide. Prepare to go above and beyond if you want to do well or pass this class.
DO NOT LET THE 5 STAR FOOL YOU!! These reviews are from a very long time ago and his class/teaching style has changed. The class and lectures are rushed and info is dumped on you. Tests are insanely hard with MCAT level questions and he now has a cumulative final while other Bio 1 professors do not. Although he is a kind person choose someone else.
Disorganized and rushed lectures that did not prepare for exams. Posts assignments at the last minute and many of us missed them. The questions in the tests are incredibly hard and not covered in the lecture.
Dr. U is very good at teaching Cell Biology. His lectures can be long but he goes into depth to ensure you understand the concepts. The exams are very fair as they test the general ideas, rarely the specifics. As long as you take notes and pay attention to the lectures, you will get an A in the class.
horrible. Made me hate biology so much. You barely learn in his lectures and I stopped going because of his teaching style and horrible PowerPoint. Grades aren't posted. Homework assignments are posted last minute. If you NEED to take him, then just don't even bother going to lecture and read the textbook. It's the only thing getting me through.
Tests are ridiculously difficult and do not reflect lecture content. Questions about obscure details. It never mattered how much I studied I still never could get above a C. Its disheartening for students who are truly putting in their all. Biology I is NOT a hard class but Dr. U basically made it impossible. Take the class with someone else.
Teaches this class like its a middle school class but tests like its a college class. I think this class with him is harder than Orgo 1 and 2 combined. Got an A in both but a C in this class for context. Complete GPA tanker even for those who try their very best. Do not know how he has a 5 rating on here. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. U is the worst professor by far that I have ever had. He is disrespectful to students in front of the entire lecture, has no organization whatsoever, and posts assignments randomly without any idea when or what they are until the week they are do. He truly damages students' confidence as they work incredibly hard and still fail to succeed.
Dr. U is passionate about Cell Biology, but tests are difficult. First 2 exams I did very poorly, skimming the textbook and watching all lectures/taking notes. To get an 80+ on last 2 exams I literally had to read the entire section of chapters on the exam. Expects you to apply the basic concept to super complicated things that were never mentioned
Dr. U is very passionate about biology but will go on tangents causing him to briefly discuss topics important for tests. The powerpoints are hard to follow and very disorganized. He lectures on important material, but expects you to know every detail of the topic for tests. This class was the one I spent the most time studying for tests so far.
I was dissapointed with Dr. U in cell bio compared to how he was when I took Bio 1 with him. He seemed very disorganized with this course and kept trying to deviate from his syllabus about exam content. However he seemed very passionate and enthusiastic about the subject matter in his lectures. This class only has quizzes and exams be careful.
He is very passionate about Cell and Molecular Bio that sometimes he goes off track and talks about a topic for too long that we must rush at the end of the lecture to cover the rest of the material for the day. He is very caring during office hours. His exams are heavily based on specific details in his lectures. Make sure you take careful notes.
grade depends on the exams, there are 3, other than that in his lectures he will constantly start rambling and his slides are vague about the topics and the questions on the exams are specific, and if you have a question, don't even bother emailing. DOES NOT answer emails, just go to the office hours. would not rec, just barley passed
Was so unhelpful this semester especially for such a hard course. Told students exams were 50 questions but threw a 60 question exam at the end of the semester which screwed a lot of us up. His lectures are informative, but he expects you to know everything to a T. Would wait to take with another professor if he's the only one available.
A very passionate prof though 50 mc question tests and a 90 question mc final exam can be tedious and there could be better ways of testing us on the course material.
Lectures are disorganized & spend half of the lecture explaining a simple concept that could be done in 5min.This makes him rush @the end & makes us go behind schedule, which lead to covering other chapters in a short amount of time.he curves exams bc many did bad on it.I only got A bc of doing ch review sheets, had prior knowledge of bio,& the curve
He is okay the subject is hard due to all the info you need to know STUDY by yourself and basically teach yourself the concepts use the Pearson practice test those helped a lot. He tends to ramble which I hate but it's bc he's so passionate about this class. He's meh could've been worse ik other people who highly disliked him
Dr. Upadhyaya is a great teacher and funny. I never read the textbook; instead, I recorded the lectures for every class and took detailed notes on everything he said. I also studied his slides, the study modules in Pearson, and ch. review sheets. If I were to do things differently, I would have read the textbook a lot more and taken notes from it.
He lectures like he's talking to a 5th grader, spends too much time on one topic then rushes through a ton at the end and when he ends up behind he'll have you watch an online lecture to catch up. Exams are tedious and some questions are badly written with some of the content coming from the lab lecture.
When I first attended his lecture I was really excited for this class because I absolutely LOVE bio and he seemed like a caring guy. That was not the case. If you have questions he won't be much help. If you are struggling with the exams that is your problem. Need extra credit? Too bad. The exams are content-heavy, study with notes, not the book.
Had to retakebecause I had dropped his summer course due to it be extremely difficult. During spring, he offered a unique extra credit process that he hasn't offered. EXTREMELY test heavy. He drops 1 exam, 1 quiz, and 1 assignment. Very passionate guy, but his lectures are not similar to the exam unless you read textbooks and watch videos.
Lectures are disorganized, and exams cover obscure details not taught in class. However, the textbook and tools like unstuckstudy ai can help compensate. Prepare thoroughly and you may still succeed.
ended up withdrawing from this course because it was so impossible to study for. sure, you can study the lecture content and study from the quiz answer keys, but theres still about 40% of an exam from other sources and a textbook that makes no sense (it's not formatted like a textbook its so weird) only 16% of grade is not from exams.
Great prof. Maybe don't take if you don't want to attend lectures, but he keeps them interesting and is clearly passionate about the subject. Loves answering q's in office hours & will go an extra half-hr long to answer everything. Drops lowest exam, plus EC. If you understand concepts, exams are super easy (unlike other reviews claim). 10/10.
Professor Upadhyaya is a great professor, and he is very animated/interactive in lectures. Being said, exams are lecture heavy and every word he says is on the exam. All exams are 50 questions and in my opinion, straight memorization. Recording his lectures is the best way to succeed in this class because not all the info is in his posted slides.
He is captivating and knowledgeable, and most importantly, he genuinely cares about the course and content he teaches. He is more than understanding and kind to his students. He is also very funny and builds up energy every day to get students engaged. I would take his class over just to have the level of interest I do when he teaches it.
Has a bunch of assignments worth 2 points each. Posts PowerPoints but they only have half the content you need to know (he gives the answers in class). Posts reviews that basically cover the whole exam.
Dr. Upadhyaya is very passionate about biology and makes lectures fun to attend! Be careful though - attendance is NOT graded but certain things he says in class WILL be on exams. Overall though, exams are fine and he curves where necessary! Also - he says to read the textbook but I never did and got an A so do with that what you will.
Pretty easy if you go to class and pay attention. He drops one test which definitely helps calm nerves. Even though tests relatively easy, lots of people still fail so typically about a 10-12 point curve.
Dr. Upadhyaya is very passionate about what he teaches. Attending lectures is key to doing well in this course, and he drops one exam at the end which is very helpful.
Dr. Upadhyaya was a decent experience, sometimes too boring, sometimes too funny. He is a genius, no doubt, but I guess he could make his exams easier. Otherwise, you can take him. You have to study hard. His exams are all MCQs. Attending his class might not feel like it, but it's worth it. He is a humble and down-to-earth person.
Although some lectures he starts slow and therefore has to speed through the end, he is a great professor with clear content that are actually on the tests. Also gives heavy curves (usually around 12pts per test), which definitely help with test grades. Also nice that you get to drop one test
Pretty hard class but that's just the content. He is very passionate about teaching.
Ashok is great for explaining content, but unfortunately his cell bio course is leaps and bounds more difficult than normal cell bio sections. If you plan on taking this course with any advanced courses (ie organic chemistry), do not. He expects absolute content mastery, with no room for mistakes. Highly disorganized, absurdly specific tests.
Hey! I took his class recently. Will say, he is a great person and really good professor. Will also say good luck passing without attending lectures. Not mandatory attendance, but if you want a good grade go to class. Exams are very specific, but he curves them. Hard course overall, but go to office hours!
Nope. Save yourself the hardship and take a different professor. The exams are not the same as the stuff on the slides and are based on what he says in class. they are complex- and this is coming from a straight A student. This is one of the only classes ive ever struggled in because of his class format and ive taken much harder courses.
Dr. U is truly such a kind and caring professor. He teaches off the posted slides but you have to go to class if you want to pass. He goes over a lot of complicated topics in lecture and the material on the slides does not fully cover what you need to know for the exams. He drops one of everything at the end of the semester which is very helpful
Expect contradictions. Preaches no textbook required, but he was shocked that the textbook wasn't utilized. The class average always low 70s. Don't take if you are interested in learning enough to know what is correct because most of the assignments/tests are subjective, depending on what he feels it should be, not necessarily what he teaches.
He is very passionate and knowledgeable about biology. He goes at a good pace to write notes. He references the textbook a lot, but I never used it, so you probably won't need it. Make sure you attend class, sometimes test questions will reference what was said in lecture. He doesn't take attendance, but you will do a lot better if you show up.
Dr. U is a pretty good professor. His slides aren't the best, and his exam style sucks bc it'll ask if its two of the above or just all, so u need to know every detail. besides that hes alr, u just need to go to class because what he says in class and whats posted can be different.
He is not a great teacher. He is very sporadic in his lectures and explanations, with no clear conveyance of information. explains things poorly, with the class not understanding anything from the lecture. He crams large amounts of information into the 75min block. You have 4 exams, one is dropped. The grading scale is super weird in this class.
Dr. U is a great professor. anyone rating him low doesn't wanna put in the work for a college class. if u go to class, record the lectures & write detailed notes for the exams, u will pass. the tests are based on what he says in class, not everything is on the slides. Dr. U provides lots of practice material for exams but YOU need to study to pass
Dr. Upadhyaya is a super nice guy. He is very passionate about the stuff he teaches and he's willing to help you if you're struggling, but you may need to email him more than once though. That being said, his class is pretty difficult. He goes through the course content super-fast and each test is on about six chapters worth of hard material.
He is an amazing professor, coming from someone who never rates. I wish he taught all my courses. I took him for both BSC 2010 and PCB 3023 and got an A in both. Take very detailed notes of what he says during the lectures and the powerpoint slides. Reading the powerpoint alone is not enough for his exams. He curves exams very nicely though.
This class is extremely easy. Just go to class, write what he says, he literally changes his tone when he speaks about something that will be a test question. On a 50 question exam, you'll know 25 questions. He changed his class style this semester, there is not a cumulative final anymore, just 4 regular exams. Plus an extra credit quiz worth 2%.
Just find a different professor. The average for our first exam was a 58% before he curved it. His lectures are awful because the slides have no information on them. Try taking notes on what he says in lecture but he has no structure, so your notes will make not sense. Nothing has been updated since 2018 so every date he gives you will be wrong.
Don't take him. I'd take Orgo twice before him again. His powerpoints are useless, 90% of the slides are figures with little to no words. Can't even take notes on what he says due to his tangents. Also, hw due dates never sync to Canvas so you just have to remember once a month you have work due. Don't even miss a class, youll be lost. Nice guy tho
i will admit his powerpoints r largely unhelpful since he says everything verbally but that being said he's still a great professor and u can tell he is very knowledgeable and passionate...just show up to lecture and pay attention and take good notes and u will be fine for the exams despite our really low averages
Honestly the best professor I've ever had, he goes a little crazy in the lectures but you get used to it. Throw away all the information you have and focus 100% on his lectures, his tests go into little specific things he mentioned in the lectures, he mentioned bees? remember the darn bees. I gotta admit its a lot to learn but he will help you! :)
Dr. U is one of the best professors I've ever had! His class is mostly based on his lectures which are only an hour 15 minutes. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended to do well on the exams. theres 4 exams, 1 is dropped out of the first 3 and the 4th one isn't cumulative. He cares about biology and it is evident. I recommend him to anyone!
If you are a decent student you will get an A. 90+ is an A. Show up to lecture and write what he says, DO HIS REVIEWS, you will get A's on all of the exams with the curve. His lectures cover everything, just use his words, slides and the book for your studying and you will do fine. Over hated, he is great, exam drops and final is not cumulative.
He's a great professor, and the lectures are engaging. He really cares about the material and is a fun professor, but going to the lecture is highly recommended. Tests are worded for ease of understanding and are multiple-choice. Tough, but not awful if you went to the lecture and studied. The supplementary instructor is a great resource!
I loved Dr. U. His tests can be tricky, but if you do well on the first two exams, you don't have to worry about the third and get about a month off from studying to help balance other classes. The final is not cumulative. Memorizing his slides, taking good notes, and making flashcards worked best for me, not always just his lectures.
