really good teacher, & she expects you to do your work. plenty of opportunity for extra credit, and tests were never more than 2 pages front&back
I really enjoyed this class and la profesora. She is funny and easy-going. There were a few written assignments, quizzes and homework but it was all very easy. I don't think I actually learned much new, but that's the fault of the curriculum since she's using Busch's syllabus.
First prof I've had here that I truly disliked. Assigns a TON of work, unreasonably so even at the 300 level. Completely unclear in her directions, and then acts like you're a horrible person for misunderstanding her. Will try to make you feel guilty when you make honest mistakes. There's no structure at all to class. I didn't learn a thing. Avoid.
Required an insane amount of homework/questions which we never reviewed. Exams were way too long to finish in only 50 minutes. She'll make you feel guilty if you ask her about your exam. My friend even noticed she misgraded hers by over 10 points and she still was unpleasant about it. AVOID.
Profesora Saad Maura wants all of her students to do well. She loves participation and when you show that you actually care. Personally, she legitimately sparked my interest in Spanish literature. Before this class, I hated reading in Spanish. Now I don't. Tests are easy if you study a bit and she's a very fair paper grader.
Probably the WORST language teacher in my life. Consistently changes her plans without telling the class. Does not teach just assigns busy work. Avoid her at all costs.
SPAN300 was essentially the same grammar that has been taught since junior year of high school; nothing advanced about it. ASM is ok, but often unclear in her instructions and gets easily distracted, forgetting many times to talk about grammar, instead talking about literature, politics, or something else. Class was boring and did not learn much.
This is the first and only review I have ever made. Im making this because I ABSOLUTLEY HATE this teacher. She discusses nothing but sakai and uses it as an excuse for the topics she NEVER Covers. this class wouldnt be too bad if she explained things but she doesnt. The absolute WORST!!
biting Sarcasm covered by disgustingly sugary sweetness and dramatic hand gestures, nasty at times, defensive when you ask for help, and looks at you like you have five heads when you ask a question, an arrogant intellectual who needs to get off her high horse. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
I have never written on this site before but I feel responsible to tell you that this teacher is horrible. She does not take ANY responsibility and she looks at you like you have five heads if you have a question. Even if you are an A spanish student, it will only work against you because she grades you harder. Its extremely frustrating and unfair
Has single handedly made me decide to NEVER take a spanish class again.
I really enjoyed ASM's class! She explained everything clearly and exams were almost identical to homework from the textbook. Going to her office hours was helpful, and I think she appreciated when students put effort into the class. I definitely will take her again if I have the chance.
I can't believe the ratings she has gotten, for anyone who is a Spanish major, like, do NOT take the comments below seriously...Asima is such a great person, and a fantastic professor...UD is lucky to have someone like her as a faculty member! Take as many classes with her as possible!!!!
I am actually astounded at the previous reviews about Dra. Saad Maura. Haven taken several courses with this professor, I can honesly say she is single-handedly responsible for helping me improve my grammar in Spanish. And yes, she does often talk about politics, history, etc. while teaching but I've learned that the best way to retain info (cont)
is to relate what you're learning to everyday life. When I am speaking and/or writing Spanish, Dra. Saad Maura is the one professor that pops into my head. She's like the grammar police, her main objective is to see her students excel in Spanish, and she does everything possible to see to this. I am very grateful for what she has taught me!
I can only hope that someone with this level of dedication to her students gets recognized for her hard work. I'd recommend her to anyone!
Saas Maura is an EXCELLENT professor. She truly wants her students to excel, and she's a fair grader on tests and written assignments/homework. The amount of work she assigns is fair, and she goes over it in class to make sure everyone understood. I've had her twice, and my opinion of her gets better every time.
Unfortunately I was disappointed with this teacher. I was always lost and I never knew what our homework actually was or when it was due. The class was very scattered and did not have any structure at all. While her tests were not difficult, the only reason I passed was because I studied the book itself. She is not very helpful at all.
ASM was very nice and clearly interested in her work. As a Spanish minor, I'm interested in the material, however I did not have much reason to pay attention and skated by without doing any work. Overall, class is easy but did not learn or improve my spanish in any way. Not bad but not great
Dr. Saad Maura provided a challenging but very rewarding survey of grammar course. I decided to take this class in between my 300 and 400 level lit classes in order to ensure that I had a solid foundation in grammar for optimal comprehension in my future Spanish courses and Dr. Saad Maura helped me achieve this. Definitely take her course!
Not impressed. Although she partially makes up for incompetence with a sweet personality, it doesn't help the fact that I learn virtually nothing in her class. We usually don't even know what we're supposed to be learning everything is so disorganized. I am constantly lost along with the other students.
I've never used this site in my life, yet my experience in the class made me feel it is my responsibility to warn people about her. Her class is a waste of time. She doesn't explain things clearly, if it all. What's worse is she gets defensive and rude when people say that they don't understand, she acts as if it is their problem, not hers.
I wanted to get a Spanish minor, so I started with this class and was extremely eager to learn. She made me drop the class, and then never want to take another spanish class. She was condescending, and never took the time to actually listen to me and there was no organization. This is the worst professor I've had in college.
If you really want to know how much you don't know, take her class. I had her before and chose to take a class with her again because she is the only professor in Spanish who really takes time to read your essays and give you detailed feedback. In other courses they make us feel good without correcting our errors. PrfMaura doesn't like mediocrity.
SPAN107, 200, 300 with prf. Maura got me to the higher levels. She taught me SO much its insane! Now I am an A student thanks to her, THE MOST dedicated & knowledgeable prof. I had at UD if you pay attention. Shes NOT for sissies!!
AWESOME professor; dedicated, helpful, always willing to help us out with patience; not condescending at all; knows EVERYTHING about language (even latin and greek!), grammar, culture, literature; amazing! THE BEST in the Spanish Dept. Majors and minors should not graduate without taking her classes, especially if your planning to teach. ShesGREAT!
Forget about getting an easy A with this professor. I certainly didnt! But be prepared to learn more Spanish than you ever thought was possible. Prof. Maura is an awesome teacher and I'll be taking more courses with her!
Had her 4+ years ago and she alone inspired me to continue w/ Span. as my career. She's someone to keep in touch with while your at UD and after graduation. Nice lady, wonderful human being, extraordinary professor.
I love Profesora Saad Maura! You can see her passion for teaching the Spanish language everyday which astounds me, because it's her native language and she must have been doing this for years. Very sweet, very clever, truly a person born to teach!
This is an amazing professor and I don't understand why she's teaching this low level. However, I feel very lucky I'm with her, because I'm learning from a real pro.
I'm one of those who wrote something negative a few semesters ago, and now I'm sorry, because the problem is that the other instructors are not as serious about grammar, and professor Maura cares a lot because this course IS ADVANCED AND ALL GRAMMAR! Be ready for a lot of work! I'm ready now. And she always helps her students, yes!
Worst proffesor at UD
Awesome teacher. This course was required and now I want to continue taking Spanish thanks to professor Maura, she made me want to take more courses, although I'm not sure if I'll like others as much. From what I've heard and read in the comments here, she's the best and most dedicated.
This professor is awesome. In all my years here, she's been the only one to give me good advice and answer my emails! Too bad she will not teach literature next spring.
I just want t say that of ALL the professors I have had at UD Saad Maura is one of the very few that has inspired me to be the best I can be. If you are not interested in the subject then don´t take the course period. She is passionate about it, dedicated and full of knowledge. Very professional and organized. If you do your job you will learn!
She is an amazing professor. Anyone who says anything else did not try or just hates any professor who requires hard work. I had her for 300 and for 401. She knows what she is talking about and was always available to help me understand my mistakes. If you are smart and try hard, an "A" is totally doable.
I enjoyed the class and learned a great deal, especially in terms of the nuances of the language. Asima Saad Maura is brilliant, an overall scholar. However, this sometimes made communication difficult. She would merely assume that we knew what she was referring to, and she rarely clarified. Only take this class if you are dedicated to Spanish.
Happy New Year! Before 401 I thought I knew all the Spanish grammar there was to be learned; I was wrong, of course. Prof Maura taught an amazing course and I ended up learning English grammar too. She's my favorite inthe FLL Dept. Actually, (I agree with others) she's the best, plus she's funny: you Laugh & Learn with her!
What I hate of this site is that unless I click on "Easy" Asima Maura does not get all the points she deserves. Beware, easy she is not, but great she undoubtedly is!
I agree about the problem with selecting "Easy"; she is NOT easy, but she's absolutely fabulous! If you are seriously interested in Span you MUST take this course; she embodies culture; you will even learn proper English with her! The FLL Dpt. is lucky to have a real Spanish speaker among so many gringo professors who speak Engl in the classroom.
I wished I had her last year in SPAN300. Now I feel a little behind. She is awesone, intelligent, knowledgeable, sweet and tough at the same time. My Spanish is improving! Great professora!
Do the homework, review your quizzes and old exams, and you will succeed! She always reuses previous questions on new exams. Really wants the students to understand and improve their Spanish, and that's definitely what happened. Enthusiastic, kind woman and a great class overall. Put in the work and you can get an A.
Passionate! She gets you going, her passion for grammar is contagious! I loved this professor and wished I had her earlier in my career.
If I had had this professor earlier, I would have taken more courses than just the requirements. I had her this summer (my last Spanish class to graduate) and she taught me SO MUCH, plus she's funny and friendly. Great prof in every way!
In addition to my 3 choices: Tough, but FAIR, grader, Respected by students, Inspirational, There for you, I wish I could take her again. It's a shame that other professors are so relaxed about grammar: we suffer the consequences later on. Prof. Maura teaches the logistics of the lang. plus MORE. She's great!
A lot of reading. Homework due every single class. Just be ready to read, participate in class and getting called out. She is still a great professor because she is willing to help and hear you out on anything but is still very tough on people. NEED book! And she takes attendance!
I'll use the same adjectives from other students: AMAZING, KNOWLEDGEABLE, FRIENDLY, THE BEST! The problem is that we're used to getting As from the other Spanish professors and suddenly we get a wake-up call when we get to this professors advanced grammar and composition class. Just be ready to really learn good Span. finally!
I wish I had taken her class right after SPAN107, when grammer was fresher. I want to take other courses with her, especially after reading what other students said about her here. She isn't easy but gives you opportunities to correct mistakes, she's great and has a sweet English accent. With any other professor, my grade would have been A.
She was hands down the best Spanish professor I have ever had. The first day was a definite wake-up call since the class is taught in mostly Spanish with little English but she is very easy to understand. There were 4 tests including an oral exam. She really wants you to understand the topics, and gives very direct, simple exams. Highly recommend!!
Asima is fantastic. I have taken her for three different courses, two of which were honors, and I am upset that I won't be able to take her again. Not the easiest teacher in the department, but she really cares about helping her students to improve.
Most unhelpful professor. Gets on your case all class period and gets mad if you do anything wrong. Goes on tangents and then you're left in the dust wondering what you ever learned and what will be on the exam. She is terrible, do not take her.
I graduated 2 years ago. Now I teach ESL. Came here to see what MY students said about me and to honor the one professor who inspired and taught me the most at UD: profesora Saad, as most have written, she's THE BEST, IF YOU ARE INTELLIGENT AND PAY ATTENTION. The previous comment is from someone who obviously lacks these 2 simple "ingredients"!
Students who take the lower levels with this professor are the luckiest ones and usually they end up majoring in Spanish thanks to her. I wished I had known, instead, I struggled a lot in 300 because no other teacher gave me the feedback I needed to become better in the language. New students should take 107 and 200 with prof. Maura!
She is clearly passionate about her class but if you are taking the honors section I would avoid it at all costs. She gives separate honors requirements that require commitment outside of class but she is absolutely unwilling to work with you. If you cannot make her office hours she will not accommodate you and quite frankly, she is rude about it.
I'll take a course with her again in the fall, honors section, precisely because she requires more from us, otherwise why register as an honors student? She was terrific in 201 awhile ago and I'm looking forward to be her student again in 300! This professora rocks!
Terrific professor. Be ready to learn more grammar then you ever thought was possible, as well as history, geography, cultural nuances, etc. I'm lucky to have taken this course with her. She's always willing to help out, including writing recommendations for her students: my employer told me that hers was the best he had ever read. She's a UD gem!
horrible. She expects SO much work from you and doesn't understand that students don't have time to do 3+ hours of homework a night for her class. Grading is extremely difficult and if you don't focus very hard in class, you'll miss everything she's saying. She will go on tangents in class and the exams will look like nothing discussed in class.
The student who wrote "horrible" is either asleep in class or has mistaken this professor for another. Prof Maura is an extraordinary teacher, who prepares study guides and goes over the material in class to help us. I'll take a class with any time. Excellent scholar, good person, and funny too.
This one the best, if not THE BEST professor in the Spanish Department! In the few weeks since the semester lasted, I've learned SO much, I look forward each day to hear her lectures and discuss the material. Also, she gives us the opportunity to talk during class and finds ways to give us extra credit. Readings are online. I love this professor!
As a UD graduate who's now into teaching, there's not a day when I don't think professor Saad Maura. I learned more from her teaching style than all the pedagogy courses I took at UD. My struggles in 401 were due to my own lazy habits with which I used to get As. She woke me up & made me aware of how much I needed to study & learn. She's a UD-BEST!
Do the hwk, attend class, ask questions, and she's there for you. She'll even help you during the exams!
Pop quizzes are announced on the syllabus, wake up! She is also one of the most accommodating professors I've had at UD. Very knowledgeable, fair, all around SIMPATICO. Problem is she expects too much from her students and wants us to feel the passion she has for Spanish lit especially poetry. I love this professora!
End of the semester and she's still patient and very accommodating, yes. She's easy if you give your all, quite a challenge, but worth it.
This professor expects a lot from us. She definitely knows her stuff but thinks we can learn whatever she says in class, speaks Spanish and assigns readings in Spanish, which for me is hard and my grade is not great. I've heard there are easier professors in the same department who explain things in English. Avoid unless your good in Spanish!
I thought she did a really good job of making class enjoyable. I had a quiet class that was not very talkative but she was always very energetic. Tests are online. She explains the grammar topics very well and often uses English to clarify tough concepts. Homework is very consistent, with a few book activities a night plus online Quia work(DO IT)
Dangerous person.
This is the professor who prepared me for 200. If you really care for Spanish, she is the one, and no, she is not at all a "dangerous person" but always willing to help her students. Great professor!
In a matter of a single semester, she managed to insult every single student. And I'm not talking people who are overly sensitive. She was rude and crass. She did not prepare us for exams. I taught myself the material. The exams were not graded fairly. I go out of my way to not take a class with her again.
Every time I walk into this class, I cringe. She continuously makes me feel worthless. I am so wildly uncomfortable because I feel targeted. Once I slipped on an exam, it was all over. She's unforgiving. I will never again take a class with her. I'd be happy to never have to see her or speak to her again.
This is how I see her, totally different from the previous comments: you want an easy A, don't take her classes, but if you want to get away from the usual highschool grammar, she is the most knowledgeable. Not at all disrespecfull or insulting, she's kind and sincere, from PRico, full of life, it's hard to fall asleep during class!
It's the end of the semester and this professor is still full of energy, just like the energizer bunny that keeps going and going! In terms of grammar, there's no one like her, plus she's extremely kind and helpful. I've learned more than ever, including literature, history, culture. Prof Maura is a pro!
Sra. Saad Maura is a very nice lady. Although I don't recommend this class unless you absolutely need it. I struggled a lot in this class and the book was not helpful at all. I used my old high school book to save myself. 6 exams, 3 papers and a video presentation. attendance will drop your grade and lectures are boring.
For many of us, this was the first real grammar class we took. The professor is knowledgeable and willing to help. However, there is a lot of homework and tests. If you put in the work you should be able to do well and learn a lot.
I believe I'll end up with a decent grade but it was tough. With the other professor I would have gotten an A as my friend have told me. Prof. Maura is obsessed with her language and grammar. Don't take her unless you are really serious about Spanish. If so, then she is the best, but not easy. To be fair, she cares and gives lots of extra credit!
We just had our final exam and she was still teaching us, making sure we got the right answer. I learned not just grammar with her but to "read carefully"! Most of our mistakes are due to not paying attention, and she hammered that onto us. She actually read our papers & gave us feedback! Great teacher, great human being!
Professor Maura Iinspired me to make Sanish my major. Her passion for everything Spanish is contagious! She is a people's person, simpática, cares about her students, an amazing human being, terrific teacher, makes a grammar class pleasant. She finds ways to comment on literature and history, very knowledgeable and kind!
Respectful and fair. No one shows so much enthusiasm during class and helps students so much than Profesora Maura!
This professor answered all my questions during class and even when I wrote her emails! Can't wait to have her again. She's a gem!
She is very hot. I mean REALLY HOT. She is not the most intelligent person of the world, but she is kind and sexy. I highly recommend her :*
Gives lots of busy work and very set in her ways. Would take another professor if possible
Great professor, gives lots of "fudge points" and bonuses ("bono" in Span. so she uses a photo of U2's Bono!), pleasant, extremely knowledgeable, answers emails, willing to explain the intricacies of grammar as many times as necessary, helps you in exams, lets you rewrite essays. Anyone serious about Span should not miss this course.
Favorite Spanish professor ever! Extremely enthusiastic, loves student input, unbelievably well-informed on the grammar of both Spanish and English. Super invested in students success but also expects students to invest themselves as well. Class moves very quickly and covers an enormous amount of content. Not an easy A but 10/10 if you're committed
I keep telling my friends to take a class with professor Maura. Other instructors might be easier but she makes sure you learn a lot. She is also very helpful, caring and patient.
Tough and great. Anyone who loves Spanish and wants to learn it really well must take a course with her.
I wish I could take a class with her again. Best Spanish professor I ever had at UD. No one ever read my papers with such attention. SPAN300 was ridiculously easy, a real waste of time. so I had to work harder in this class. However, professor Maura helped me through. She clearly cares and wants her students to really learn. She's funny too!
DO NOT TAKE HER! WORST TEACHER OF THE SPANISH DPT!
Dra. Saad Maura is a very nice woman on the surface, but extremely tough when you get to know her. Many people thought class was boring, but honestly I learned so much about Spanish grammar. We learn about a chapter a day, but all of the exams follow around the same format (so no fear!) If you want to learn a lot and work hard, take SPAN300 w/ her.
Dr Maura is tough but once you get to know her she is absolutely caring, an amazing professor who makes sure you learn more than you ever thought was possible during a semester. SPAN300 is ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION at university level, NOT high school. She was always prepared for every class. I looked forward to her class.
Fabulous professor, great class. No one should graduate from UD without taking advanced grammar and composition with her.
Knows a lot about the material and is a sweet lady. However, if you don't enjoy speaking in class I would not recommend. She holds a participation heavy class and will not be afraid to call you out in front of the class if you're not up to par.
I owe a lot to this professor. Unfortunately, she will be on sabbatical next year, so, if you can wait, I suggest you do: she is a serious yet also sweet professor who knows her grammar inside out.
No one teaches grammar better than this professor. She's a terrific teacher. I never thought grammar was so interesting. I'm looking forward to taking one more course with her.
Honestly, she expects WAY too much from college students. She will assign homework every single day and every weekend. She will email you to give you additional homework. And she will collect the homework randomly (but rarely) so you do all the work for none of the reward. Also the exams do not reflect what you go over at all. Very hard.
Friends encouraged me to take her class and I wished I had had her before. She is tough but knowledgeable. I have to work harder because on previous courses the professors didnt care, or didnt know enough, they also spoke English, which professor Maura hardly does. The best Spanish professor, true university level, for those who care to learn.
I can't believe it but I am reading poemas and stories in Spanish FOR MY OWN PLEASURE during my Thanksgiving break, hello! Thanks to her, I feel more confident, just as she said would happen, it's all about practice! I think I'll get B+ or A- in the course, but what matters is that this professor has been an inspiration.
Wonderful professor. Don't leave UD without taking her for grammar. Comes off as tough but she cares. Her exams are very fair. I'm seriously amazed at how much my grammar has improved this semester.
GREAT professor in every way. Professor Maura is extremely knowledgeable, fair and compassionate. She made sure we understood the logic behind grammar. A few of us looked forward to going to class, believe it or not. Her passion for everything Spanish is contagious.
This class is tough, especially if you didn't take grammer before. My friends sister is taking sp200 with the same professor and already knows what we are studying in this advanced level, so she will be ready for later. Prf Maura goes out of her way to help us understand.
Don't go into this class expecting an easy A. I learned more this term than in all my years of Spanish, but I had to work really hard. I feel I got a solid base, finally! Taking the course with this professor is worth it if you are interested in learning. Also, she is caring and explains the material really well.
I love how passionate Professor Saad Maura is about the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. I really enjoyed the class and the assignments for the most part. She is misunderstood as standoffish at times, but if you get to know her she is actually very sweet.
She would give us 4 hours of homework every night. Seems to be under the impression it is our only class. It is impossible to do well in her class. She gives you tons of assignments to get grades on, then she rips them to pieces as if you are grad not undergrad. If you can get out of taking her, do it. I've never regretted staying in a class more.
Yes, there is a lot of homework in this course, but it is actually appropriate. The level is 401 and the topic is ADVANCED grammar-composition. Those who studied with her before seem prepared. Honestly, I don't think it is her fault but that we got used to relax too much in our previous Span. courses. She also gives extra credit.
I took this class because my friends kept telling me how much they learned with Prof. Maura. I never thought I would enjoy grammar so much, she's great, and I am heartbroken because she is retiring and I will never have her again. She's an extraordinary teacher and I feel lucky to have been in her class!
Too bad she's retiring, because she is a great prof-I learned more in this class than any other Spanish class at UD. It's a very difficult class, but she offers lots of opportunities for extra credit and there are a lot of assignments in the gradebook. Office hours are very helpful and she answers email questions quickly.
UD students of Spanish must say good-bye to taking a grammar course with a true native speaker who knows her language inside out. Prof. Asima was simply a great teacher and a very special human being, an extraordinary person.
I took two courses with Prof. Maura. She was always on time and ready to go. I miss her positive energy and plan on using her teaching style after graduating from UD, what a gem! I am sure that she would have handled the online teaching better than anyone else in the DLLC.
