Dr. Getan is the bomb, she explains very well, once you are past the accent you will love her, she makes math fun and very easy. SHE MOVED ME FROM AN 87 TO A 90!!!! I love her so much, she can get a little frustrated but if you respect her she will respect you back.
Worst. Professor. Ever. Blames her students when they don't understand subject matter, is super unhelpful outside of class, and often refuses to clarify specific problems. Also teaches directly out of the book, adds none of her own material, and is super difficult to understand.
I loved Mrs. Getan. Sometimes it was a little difficult to understand what she was saying but she was always more than happy to repeat herself for clarification. She was always ready and willing to help me outside of class when needed because math is not my best subject. If you put in the effort she will more than meet you half way.
Its very hard to understand her, and she makes alot of mistakes with her work. The student corrects the teacher on a daily basis and grades are very confusing at times. There was 40 students, but now there is 12 since everyone dropped out. Even if you do the homework and get the right answer, you need to do it how she shows, which is preposterous
Her teaching style is more auditory rather than visual. She expects you to understand material by the next class. She is not at all good conveying information clearly. Stuff that was easy to understand became like learning a foreign language. Not Welcoming if you don't understand. Very Hard. Over half of class stayed home and taught themselves.
Awesome if you try a little bit. Will help you as much as you need and actually care about your class progress.
Avoid this professor at all costs if you have other options. I took calculus in high school so I already knew everything she was teaching, but she is difficult to follow and flies through examples so it will be hard if this is your first exposure to the material. Not to mention her accent can be hard to get used to.
The class started off rough, simply because it took me a while to adjust to her teaching methods combined with my methods of learning. However, there are always quizzes and videos you should complete and watch before class, and the videos help tremendously to prepare you for class. With effort, passing is definitely likely.
At first i didnt like Dr. Getan bc she teaches and expects you to understand everything right away. Eventually got used to her teaching and it wasnt bad. Gives 6 quizzes and 5 tests (4 & final), but looks for ways to give students as much points as she can on answers even if its completely wrong which saved my grade!! Most quizzes are take home!
Very, very difficult course. The professor is very difficult to understand, expects students to have mastered all the material on their own, and is clumsy and hard to follow on the projector (simply copies notes from her laptop to the screen, and you can only see 1/2 of it). She does not command respect and class time becomes a joke/phone time.
Not a very good teacher. Difficult to understand and confusing. Sometimes unable to answer students' questions so other students had to answer for her. Class was frustrating because she did not have the respect of the other students who would then make jokes and talk in class. Helpful if you point out to her something graded wrong and would fix it
This class was so difficult and not taught well at all. I would not recommend taking this Professor if you can help it. Speeds through material and genuinely does not care if it is understood by the students.
Literally the worst professor i have ever had. she does not speak english and frequently messes up the information that she is going over. she also takes off points for not doing it her way. good luck if you have her.
This professor speaks with a strong accent that is very hard to get used to. She also has a low voice, and teaches solely by copying off her notes or answering questions on the projector. Every test we took had at least 1 typo or wrong answer, and she announces it very subtly, which makes it hard to understand her. It wastes time and adds confusion
This professor has a thick accent. The main issue is how she tries to correct herself, but her limited English makes it impossible to figure out what is right. She also isnt really great at the subject she teaches, because she gets multiple questions wrong on a test, which she corrects at the last 5 minutes. My recommendation, stay away from her.
Frequently loses train of thought when trying to explain problems. Frequently gives incorrect solutions or work to problems and would not realize until a student would explain her errors. Doesn't allow electronics during lecture. Homework is very time consuming, but not difficult.
Without a doubt the single worst teacher I've ever had. Quite often can't even answer her own problems clearly or without having to redo her work multiple times over. Has a confusing grading system where she bounces back and forth between grading based on answer and based on work shown. Class unanimously agreed that she blew at explaining material.
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. Impossible to understand, does not understand the material, and the class bombed the first exam. She replaced our original professor (went on leave) and the class signed a petition to replace Prof. Getan, but Math Department didn't change anything. I ended up having a friend teach me, DO NOT TAKE HER!
All the other replies to this are correct. The difference is I had her during this COVID-19 pandemic, where it is all online. I straight up didn't bother attending lectures because I knew I was going to have to teach myself all the material anyway. The one good thing I can say about the class is you can use Mathway for most of Hawkes Learning.
Dr. Getan is an atrocious professor. All of our work is submitted on Hawkes, so I just use Mathway. If you ever have any grading issues or specific questions about the Hawkes assignments, she cannot help you. I don't show up to the lectures because I have to teach myself the material anyway. Run far from Dr. Getan.
She's super sweet, and helps you if you ask for it, but I didn't learn my best from her and ended up teaching myself the entire course, which wasn't bad since it's only precalc, but it was a lot of self-understanding. The quizzes, test reviews, and exams themselves are modeled after the hw on Hawke's so as long as you understand those, its an easy A
Where do I even start with this one. First of all, she is very difficult to understand and it doesnt help that she rushes through the lectures. I really dont think she knows what shes doing half the time and seems to confuse not only her students, but herself as well. Be prepared to teach yourself, or just use Photomath or Mathway
She may be trying her best but, it isn't good at all, with this class you are playing the university to teach yourself.
Terrible, horrible. If you have to take math, never take her. Doesn't communicate with students about assignments/exams, incomprehensible lectures, doesn't care about her students. Her homework assignments take forever and are tedious, and the tests don't always match the material. I usually get B's in math and I almost failed.
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. Impossible to understand, and never stops talking. She will extend class 15-20 minutes just talking incoherently. Second day of Calc and she gave us 8 assignments due each of which with 30-45 questions on stuff we haven't learned. She seems to confuse herself all the time. Stay away from Prof. Getan.
I had Professor Getan for calc 1 online. I enjoyed calculus in high school, but her class has made me dread math. I can never understand what point she is trying to make when teaching and she relies a lot on webwork to cover material.
Very large language barrier. Speeds through lessons thinking everyone knows what to do. Stay as far away from her. If I could give her 0 stars I would.
Do not take this class. Theres a massive language barrier, she doesnt teach the class and you basically have to teach yourself. The homework is heavy, and the lectures and mandatory. Doesnt allow computers in class yet most of her work is on Canvas.
If you cant deal with heavy accents avoid! I would only show up to class because of attendance but after I would have to go home and teach myself agin.
Does not communicate well with students and doesn't offer help even when needed. Gives a lot of homework and most of the time the homework isn't related to what she teaches in class. Stay as far as you can from her!
I took calculus in high school, but I feel like I learned the material better in high school than in this class. There is a language barrier, making it hard to convey the material. Honestly, she is a sweet person but not the greatest at teaching. I recommend not taking this class with Prof. Getan. Especially if you never had calculus before.
I took ap calc in high school and received a 97 in the class but I took it again, I thought a college prof. would teach it better than a high school teacher. I was very wrong. Dr. Getan is legitimately the worst teacher I've had in my entire life. She even asked one day if there was anything she could do better and she just told us we were wrong.
This lady is the definition of incompetent. First off homework is all based on Hawkes and so is the test reviews, so what is on the homework is not what is being taught in class. Her test are impossible to study for as not only do you have to teach yourself because her lecture and notes are hard to understand I could type an essay on how bad she is
Worst Professor ever. She cannot teach. Her accent nobody understands. She confuses herself. Her homework assignments dont even add up with the test she gives. Just be ready to teach yourself. I usually pass math with a breeze but I failed it. Doesnt care anout students grades either.
Prof Getan is the worst professor I've ever had. She makes careless mistakes, like dropping negatives, that the class has to correct. She is disorganized, will start one problem, halfway through decides to solve another one first instead. Inconsistent with the syllabus and often pushes tests back. Never in office hours, bad at answering emails.
Worst math prof ever. Not even sure how she got her math degree she can barley do basic algebra and easily gets confused trying to work out problems. Her test she does not prepare you for as any homework or quizzes are totally different from whats on the test. Overall shes an awful teacher hope I never have to see her again in my entire life.
This lady makes you want to jump off a bridge rather then go to her class shes terrible
I highly recommend that you attend every class as perfect attendance bumped my grade up from a 70 to a 73. Although you may not get anything out of these lectures due tot he language barrier the extra points is worth it. You will need to seek help from tutors or the TA to pass the course especially if you have trouble with math.
She is the worst prof. I ever had in my life. She makes so many mistakes in math problems. She doesn't know how to explain the concepts. Her tests are heavy. She is very disorganised. I beg you all to not take her class. Her class is confusing. Its more like do it yourself. She skips some concepts and You have to figure out everything on your own.
Dr. Getan is a very wonderful woman, however her teaching strategy is confusing and can make it really difficult to understand the material. Even when I would show up to her lectures, I would have a difficult time following her and she would make it more confusing than it needed to be. I would not take her class again, but I loved her as a person!
You will get loads and loads of quiz and homework grades with absolutely no weight at all and too great an emphasis placed on test scores Also this instructors grasp on the English language is not good enough to teach this subject effectively in my humble opinion. I will never take her again and this has taught me to check my professors before hand
I took calc 1 with this professor and she is extremely difficult to follow during lectures, when you ask a question she will go off on a tangent about something completely different, if you miss one day of class you will miss an entire section worth of notes that are graded but she won't go over what you missed and she goes too fast to understand.
This professor makes basic algebra mistakes that she does not correct unless they are pointed out to her explicitly. She also picks on the class as a whole over things like drinking water, having squeaky chairs, and using computers to take notes. She will disrupt class for upwards of 10 minutes to yell at people for these things.
Personally I don't mind the lecture heavy math that you follow along with. There is a webwork assignment and note check after each topic. The webwork is usually 8 question that the same as the notes and the note checks are just putting the answers from notes onto canvas. She does mess up algebra and has ascent but she does care for the student
Very very nice lady outside of teaching, she IS hard to understand though and does not understand the questions the students ask, makes lots of simple algebra mistakes, and does not explain things very well. Again, love her to death and such a nice person, but not the best teacher. If you do need an extension or any help she will help you tho.
Constantly making grammatical and mathematical errors. She never takes the time to explain things and overall is not a good professor.
She is an awesome professor and had no problem understanding her at all!
if i would rate any lower, i would. Awful professor (respectfully) good as a person I am sure, but bad at grading and teaching. Skipping entire textbook lessons to push test up and skipped a lot of material without going over it. does no review sessions or gives study guides so the TA is the best you got. You MUST go to office hours.
Has a strong accent, however, it is bearable. Students tend to have to correct their work, the test reviews are nothing like the test sometimes. If you end up having to take her class, watch John Taylor math videos on youtube, he teaches the same thing Ms. Getan is teaching, since he is the calc chair.
The worst professor I ever had in my life, never take this class. I am usually very good at math but she made me hate math. She doesn't understand what she is saying and is constantly saying inappropriate comments to other students. She can't do basic math and has no idea what she is talking about and always makes mistakes students need to correct
She yelled at my class constantly for things like drinking water or having squeaky chairs. She also was unreachable outside class hours. She went off on twenty minute tangents, and got even basic algebra wrong. Terrible!
Treats students ok but rude to TA, constantly makes mistakes when completing problems in lectures, and doesn't explain material well.
Awful professor (respectfully), if you choose Getan as your professor, good luck. Teacher constantly makes mistakes during lectures, gives no partial credit or curves on exams. I am on the verge of failing a class meant to be easy because of Getan, TA does not at all get along with Getan.
Terrible professor. No other way to put it. Treats TA more like an annoying dog than an assistant. Gets basic math wrong (ex. she thought 7pi/2 was greater than 2pi). Then when told of her mistake she defends it for the next 5 mins even though she is clearly wrong. Constantly wastes time going back while teaching to correct her own mistakes.
Teacher is pretty bad, but not awful. She is nice at least and she always manages to make our class laugh everytime. It's hard to get an A but it's very doable. If you want to pass this class, just show up to class, do all homework, and teach yourself the material outside of class using the resources provided in Canvas/Youtube and you will be fine.
Dr. Getan is an objectively bad professor. I'm very comfortable with calculus and enjoy it. This class almost ruined my love for math. Dr. Getan makes numerous mistakes in class and seldom addresses them. Her lectures are unclear and uninformative. The language barrier makes them hard to understand. She is woefully unprepared to teach this class.
Prof Getan is the worst math teacher I have EVER had. It seems as if she is proving to us that SHE knows how to do the problems instead of teaching US how to do the problems. She also treats the TA awfully. If you take this class prepare to teach yourself. Would NEVER recommend this class!
Dr. Getan isn't the worst teacher I've had but she isn't the best teacher. I feel like she just goes through problems without really teaching her class how to solve them, so you'll leave the class not knowing what to do but homework would be due that night. You'll have to have initiative to study and learn own your own with this class.
Class is confusing at times, she's a nice teacher and has an accent. She isn't a terrible teacher and definitely not the worst and not the best either. some of these posts are exaggerated tbh. This class is passable but does make simple mistakes from time to time. The tests are the hardest part. besides that your fine.Just be prepared for the tests
Don't take this class if you are not motivated. Often times I left class learning nothing and had to use outside resources to teach myself. She can at times be rude to students. But I think the tests were very similar to the study guide. If you're confident you can teach yourself the material this is an ok class to take.
Dont take her class, withdraw immediately. She is calling everyone sleepy and lazy during her lectures. Its hard to comprehend her talk because she gets angry for no reason.
She will yell at the class about being sleepy, when nobody is acting sleepy, and likes to humiliate students who are doing anything off task while making it incredibly hard to follow the lecture. She also makes mistakes in her work. And lectures on a chalkboard in 2023. Class does not prepare you for the tests, and you will be teaching yourself
I think her lectures can be improved and it's not the best, especially with her accent, but it is doable. She does make small mistakes sometimes. No earphones/headphones/airpods on. Tests are similar to the study guide. Nice, but can be mean or rude sometimes, but she will try to help. Prep videos are lectures are important bc they are your notes!
She has a thick accent and her handwriting can be hard to understand, but she is great. Be very VERY nice to her, it can be the difference between passing or failing the class, she is very understanding and will change your grade if there is a genuine reason and if you ask nicely
I've only been in this class for a week but I am giving her a rating now. do not take this class, find another professor. you have to teach yourself, it's like she doesn't know the material. you can barely understand what she says. get another professor!! she does not explain topics well. I had to watch the videos from another prof to understand.
She tends to hold students after class by about because she doesn't finish her lessons in time. Her accent is very thick and hard to comprehend sometimes as well. She also often tends to make errors when she teaches and has to be told by her students that she made a mistake on a problem.
SHE MADE A 9/11 JOKE MY GRANDFATHER WAS ON THE AIRPLANE I CRIED FOR 4 HOURS AFTER HER CLASS EVEN STILL CRYING ONCE I GOT TO MY BIO EXAM THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD WILL NOT BE ATTENDING THIS CLASS AGAIN. SHE ALSO GIVESE A LOT OF HOME WORK AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY :( (AGAIN)
She has an incredibly thick accent that makes it hard to understand half of the time and her lectures are kinda uncoordinated. She is almost screaming in some of her lectures, to where I can hear her all the way down the hall. She has to be corrected by the students half the time and just cannot teach.
She is a good teacher if you just pay attention and do your work, people will complain about her having a thick accent or that she doesn't teach, but that's just not the case. As long as you show up to class and apply yourself there is no way you won't get an A.
Getan is a really tough professor. Her lectures are so bad, it's hard to understand her, and she never finishes a chapter on time. The study guides are NOTHING like the tests, so don't get your hopes up. The tests are really what your grade relies on. The webwork/note checks do absolutely nothing to your grade. Just try to get another instructor.
Professor Getan often makes mistakes in her lectures. Students who try to ask questions are usually interrupted by the professor so it's hard to interact with her. I recommend taking a different professor if you can. If not, be aware that the study guides are nothing like the tests. The TA was very kind and would hold problem sessions.
Good professor but not great. Friendly and accessible outside class, and can genuinely care about students succeeding in class. Tends to strain her voice often, but her accent is very understandable. Can make mistakes. Can be difficult to clarify topics with her. Utilize office hours and PAL sessions and do not skip class.
She is a nice person and I do believe she wants her students to do well. But unfortunantly I believe she is the worst professor I ever had. She constantly makes algebra mistakes in her lecture, is not very good at communicating math concepts well, never finishes sections on time, and makes the study guides look nothing like the test.
I had her for Calc 1 and she was awful. She doesn't even speak English. She does not make the material easy for anyone to understand at all. The only reason I made an A in the class was because I already took AP Calc in high school so I knew all of the content already and I learned it way better there. The Taylors are way better than her.
She seems nice, but her class disappoints. Teaching's like decoding hieroglyphics, with errors. She rushes through, leaving us confused. Instructions are murky, and class content doesn't match assignments or tests. Avoid unless you're a math whiz. I'm practically taking another course to make up for what I'm not learning here. This is a warning.
Professor Getan does care about her students, but had some flaws. She would tend to squeeze in a problem or a new chapter at the end of class, sometimes going over class time. When students ask questions, she interrupts them every second, making it hard to want to ask questions. If she learned to understand student behavior more, she'd be great.
Prof. Getan is genuinely the worst professor I have had at UNC Charlotte. Her accent makes it difficult to understand lectures, and her simple math errors during lectures serve to confuse students, as she often does not catch them. Getan is rude towards students that ask questions or provide incorrect answers, even on brand new topics. Avoid her!
She doesn't teach, she just does problems and then yells at you to solve them and her accent is so thick no one can understand what she is saying, she will call you out in the middle of class
Took this class years ago... Might not be the case now but years ago classes were 3 times a week attendance mandatory Didn't recall having quizzes but had unit tests paper + textbook Great professor had accent but understandable Pushed my grade to A with curves, no other professor in my 4 years in college did this 5/5, other ratings are ridiculous
I don't recommend this professor. Not only does she move through content too fast, but I also had a hard time understanding her.
I am warning you... please do not take her. I never do 'rate my professor' but she is so bad I had to warn others. She is mean, loud, and can not teach or even do basic math it is torture sitting in a lecture. She messes up basic equations the whole time and it sets back every class. Her tests are so hard for no reason. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She speaks really fast, she gets upset that we don't understand She will yell in front of the whole class. The "Practice Tests" are not the SAME as the test you take in person. She will try to go over class time and does start on a whole topic at the end of the class
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! She will get in your personal space and yell at your face and accuse you for cheating for any little reason she can come up with. DO.NOT.TAKE.HER. she needs to be fired ASAP.
I would recommend taking another Calc class if you see this teacher. She makes a lot of mistakes, some she doesn't even catch until a student points it out. Tests are weighted very heavily, so it feels like nothing else matters. Scribbles out a lot of work, leaving students confused. Grades tests very late, taking a week or more. Avoid at all costs
Probably one of the worst professors at UNCC. She does not teach calc very well and makes everything difficult to understand. It's like she purposely tries to make the class harder. One time she even threatened to mark every student on their laptop absent despite some students having the textbook on their laptop. I had AP calc in HS so I got an A.
This was the worst Professor!!! You couldn't understand her. She would call on people all of the time and cared so much about attendance. If you leave before class is ended she will count you absent. Her exams were hard with hardly any multiple choice. She would also mess up on material in class so attending her classes didn't help at all!
Overall it's a fair class and she obviously cares a lot, you'll succeed well enough if you read the textbook, she is genuinely difficult to understand at times which is especially important for calc
Every time I walked to that class, I would hope my life would suddenly end right then and there. Thank you.
Worst class I've had. Lectures were unorganized, hard to follow, and riddled with basic errors. Instructor regularly gets upset, walks around and loudly smacks on desks, and uncomfortably calls people at random to answer problems- just insanely confrontational for no good reason. Was successful only because I skipped lectures and taught myself.
This professor yells in your face and you can't understand her. She offers little to no resources. Do not take this professor.
She isn't able to explain the lectures clearly, and she would tap on the desk to ensure you pay attention. I would highly recommend that you find another 1103 class that's not her as quickly as you can. If not, just use the textbook that has videos that explain the topics more clearly before entering her class.
Incredibly hard to understand and constantly goes back on what she said previously. Seems like she has never thought the course before.
Treats the whole class like were still in highschool. Makes you raise your hand to 'let her know' that youre going to the bathroom, unnecessarily controls usage of computers in class even if youre on task, extremely confrontational, and she yells a lot and hits her hands or pen on the desk to get your attention. Will yell at you if you dont. Avoid.
Lectures are really what is bad about this class. She will yell the whole time, and will make you stop doing anything else(any tech put away). You will just listen to her for an hour with no relief. The class itself is pretty easy, tests are not hard. But the lectures you attend twice a week will be miserable.
Not the best at explaining concepts
Nice professor, slightly confusing lectures
