Good notes and his lectures are very clear. The tests are easy if you payed attention in class. He gives a day of review before the test to answer questions, but never goes over the homework, which would have been helpful at times. Would take him again.
THE BEST
he never answers the question that you asked, and all he does is go through problems in the book
a very easy class. he presents the material in an understanding way. the tests come from lecture and hw problems. he also gives a day of review before tests. he also gives bonus opportunity.
Turfe is very arrogant about his mathematical ability; he would write stuff on the board we didn't need to learn just to show us how much he knew. He grades his tests very hard - on our 1st test, one person got an 88/100, another a D+, and everyone else failed. I studied hard for this class, failed the first 2 tests and dropped it. Avoid him.
do not take this man, unless you have a very good mathematics background and can teach urself real good, cuz he doesnot know how to explain anything, he makes more confusing mistakes on the board than students make on tests, and he treats students like middle schoolers, yelled at students for comin in five minutes late
This is one of the worst prfesors that i had. Dont take him. He doesnt know how to comunicate with his students. If you ask any questions he will not respond to u. This guy will make your quit school. Dont take him
OK FIRST OF ALL, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE HOMEWORK HE IS THE ONE TO TAKE BECAUSE HE DOES NOT GRADE IT AND IF YOU MISSED IT YOU CAN ALWAYS DO IT AT UR FREE TIME, but he doesnt teach good at all. he doesnt answer questions, he only writes on board the problem and solvs it expecting u to know it all, i suggest that if you can take a different teacher do it
Had him for Math 090 & 113. Lectures can be confusing. Doesn't grade homework. Make sure you do the chapter reviews, exam questions come directly from there! He also tells you exactly which problems are on the final!
if u do ur homework and study the chapter examples and the chapter reviews for the test, you'll get an A. ur grade consists of tests and attendance and class participation. he also gives out extra credit every once in a while. throws in interesting facts about math here and there. he also helps on homework and gives you a review day before the test
Nice man. You don't have to do homework. He is extremely helpful IF you ask for it. He helps you out with your grade if you attend class as well.
He's a nice guy. He gives a lot of homework, but you don't really have to do it because he doesn't check it. Do it if you're having problems with the work tho.. obviously. His tests are just like the chapter reviews so make sure you know how to do those, and you'll do fine on the tests.
He lectures by giving examples which is usually understandable. Homework is not checked but must be completed in order to grasp concepts. He teaches at a fast pace so if you learn slowly he's not for you. Answers questions by doing the problem and then saying "ok do you get it" instead of explaining step by step. Grades solely on short tests.
this man is terrible, he doesn't help you when you ask for. one time i went to his office and knocked the door, he didn't open it up. i asked a question one time and yelled at me and made me look like i am stupid. he embarrassed in front of the whole class for not having my book. he is so high schoolish.
This guy is the worse! does not know how to teach at all.... exams are easy only if you know the materials. hates if people are absent!! even though there is no point in going to lecture since he doesn't teach you anything! STAY AWAY.. unless you already know the materials
I have taken this class before at another university, credit just didn't transfer. Teacher is arrogant, and doesn't give much partial credit, at all. Seems to grade guys better than girls. I would recommend that you seek another prof. I dropped the class, and hated that I was out money, but my GPA is important to me...
Not a hard class, just a bad teacher. Stands at the chalkboard and just writes problems and he solves them while talking. Homework is not mandatory, but if you want to do good you have to do it. Tests are rough, he is just not a very good teacher. I would reccomend taking this class with someone else if you want to do good.
overall the class is easy but a horrible horrible teacher who does not know how to each. Lectures are spent with him facing the chalk board and writing down answers... NO EXPLANATION is given... expects you to do every thing on ur own. DO NOT RECOMMEND
At first i didn't like him only cause he moved to fast. but he explains well enough and at least you can undersatnd what he talks about. attending class helps. do homework and review and you will be fine. i would say take the class!
Horrible Horrible teacher. I took the class over for the second time with him and still was not able to get an A even though I knew all the materials. 4 question exams, each one is worth 25 point, you turn a negative into positive and there goes 10 points.DOES NOT TEACH. He only writes down answers and if you ask questions he makes you look stupid.
Spends classtime doing book problems. No practical examples. Treats students like middle schoolers, yelling if late and separating them if talking. Does not require homework for a grade, but, if he finishes lecture an hour early, you have to sit for the remaining time and do the homework he assigns. Avoid.
Never goes over the homework. Rushes through teaching so you have time in class to do homework. He makes things harder than they need to be. I wasted my time and money with this guy and now I have to retake the class.
Does not know how to teach, if you ask him a question out side his note he cant solve it. HIS TESTS MOSTLY FROM THE EXAMPLES IN THE BOOK. But he does not teach you so you have to do it on your own time. Just avoid if you can. and he is LAZY i mean really lazy
This my friends, is why we need pay based on the ability to teach. I don't care how well he knows the material or how much time he needs to sample his politic, I want to learn, and I care about how much and how dedicated he is to helping me to do so.
AVOID if you care about your GPA. I have gotten A's in every math class in college except his and I believe this is due to Turfe's test format and grading. 5 questions, each worth 20 pts. One wrong sign and it could (and often does) cost you 10 or more points and he will NOT negotiate points. To make matters worse, he doesn't curve at all.
Not a bad guy, but don't get off topic during class. No graded HW, but Exams were almost all multiple choice and no partial credit. If you don't already know the material, he will not take the time to carefully go over it. Very quick lecture, then makes entire class stick around until end doing HW. Very strict, DO NOT TAKE. HARSH GRADER.
Nicest guy in the world. awful teacher, my GPA is shot.
Great Teacher. He helped me get into B School. If you do the homework and go to class you cat get an A, no problem.
Best professor I have ever had. Do your homework, show up to class, ask questions when you don't understand, and you will do well. I recommend him for anyone who has to take 113 or 115
I would have to say Professor Al Turfe is a easy teacher as long as you focus you will be fine!In addition he really makes sure you understand the material before leaving his class! Overall AWESOME GUY!
amazing teacher, knows how to explain very well, loved Calc after this class, such an amazing teacher that you are bound to get an A in his class because he explains so well. I highly reccomend him.
He always stayed after class to help me out. I like him.
This guy thinks he is the Michael Jordan of Math. He's cocky but knows his stuff. Wont hesisate to call on you to do a problem in front of the class...forget about it. Nevertheless, he likes to have fun and is always there to help and go the extra mile for his students. I worked a lot in this class, more than I thought but it was worth it.
He is a fair teacher. Curves the class. Test come right from the book.
Turfe is one of those teachers that inspires you to really get into math. It is not my favorite course by far, but I must say he made it interesting.
He only copies examples onto the board and expects you to instantly understand the topics. 5 exams 100pts each and a final which is doubled. Exams are only 4 questions and he's overly detailed. He teaches the board and does not welcome questions. Overly concerned with attendance. VERY VERY IMPATIENT! Will not take again...
if u want 2 explain every thing 2 urself then take him coz he doesnt explain anything.he just copy his notes on the board.if u ask him a question, he doesn't know how 2 explain,he just give u the answer. worst teacher ever.if such good universities have such teachers, then we should rethink if they r good or not. dont take him!!!
Hard of hearing so he ignores questions. Brags about how much money he gives the school, basically to tell us he can do what ever he wants to! Tests are incredibly hard. Math is my thing and I got 65&67, The class average 64% andhe thinks he is doing a great job! He bragged how hard the test was.He made a mistake on test and did not care!Idropped!
I love mathematics, and I think Turfe really knows his mathematics, it's just he's not so great with teaching it. He basically brags about his contributions to the University which probably gave him tenure. He doesn't explain at all, he just DOES it himself with minimal explanation, and says "okay?". Same with hw. Will not take again
Very entertaining character. Good teacher that doesn't boggle you down with unnecessary book info. I personally think he is great: gives hw but doesn't grade & you have 4 tests that determine your grade. I have an A right now. Just study and you should have no worries.
I had a B in Calc I and was concerned about Calc II until one of my frinds told me to take Professor Turfe. If youattend class, take good notes, you will get an A, no problem.
Easy A. All I did was attend class and ask questions after calss and he was very helpful. He loves math and if you show interest he will help you anytime.
This guy is serious about math and loves to do problems. His tests are from class examples and homework. He ws always willing to help me during office hours. I got a B+ but i would take him again.
Don't even bother taking this class, unless you like teaching yourself everything. The tests are annoying, they are like 5 questions (not YAYY!), he will pick the hardest questions he can think of. He never comes to class prepared, makes up notes as he goes along. I would have rather taken a class thats at midnight. Warned you, good luck!
Best Math teacher I ever had. He is very helpful and understanding. Tests come right from the chapter tests in book.
Professor Turfe gave me the benefit of the doubt when I argued my math test for more points. He is a great guy.
Nice guy to talk to, but he really won't teach much. He picks the most difficult question to give on the tests, which are a maximum of fifteen questions. All points come from exams and the final. Extra credit is rare. I wish I took it with someone else.
Overall, I thought Professor Turfe's class wasn't impossible but one you have to be ready to work for. You must do and pay attention to your homework! Most test questions came from homework/chapter review/notes from class. Gave ample EC opportunities. Take this class when you've got a schedule that allows plenty of time to study for this class!
If you study the material ahead of time, his lecture is fairly clear. If you don't, the class is difficult and moves too fast. Make sure you have enough drive and time to study. His tests are tough, but there are extra credit opportunities. He is a bit dull, but he is fairly nice and his speech is easy to understand.
the mob boss of math
He should just retire. Lol.I think most of these ratings were made by Turfe. Truth is: he's rude and insulting. He quickly copies the book's examples for 10mins. He doesn't explain step-by-step. So basically you're lost. Then he FORCES you to sit there and do homework for the remainder of class hr(s). He's lazy. Don't waste your money. AVOID!
OMG i hated him and i hated math . he used to come in class, teach himself, then assign homework for the rest of class period. he was really rude and has no interest in hearing from his students or making sure that we actually understand the material. Absolutely hated it! take math with anybody but him!!
This man really needs to learn that his tests are too hard. Didnt get any higher than a 60 on his tests luckily the labs were easy. but his homework is ridiculous and not coherent to what is supposed to be learned.
Great Professor. He notices his students who put forth an effort. Attend the class and do the homework. Its like any math class, you get out of it what you put in. Professor Turfe was great, I look forward to taking more classes with him!
Best math teacher I ever had.
He makes the class fun and easy. nice guy
Professor Turfe made what I thought would be a tough class very fun. His examples of stats in the real world made things clear for me.
Professor Turfe has the math room named after himself. This dude cares about the university and its students. I got a B. Had i studied more, would have been an easy A.
Tests come right out of the chapter quizzes. Study those and you don't even have to attend class;should be the easiest A ever.
Made a boring class ok. He helped me get my business internship at Ford. Go to class, do the problems in the book and you should do well.
problems he does in class appear on test. he holds regular office hours and is always there to help. he appreciates students who get into the subject.
He's pretty intimidating and comes off as rude. He does have a nice side though if you arent being an idiot by talking or failing his class. He is a bit hard of hearing, so dont think he's ignoring you if he doesnt respond, just speak up. I dont think he explains things very well. He seems to be a bit cocky about knowing a lot of math.
Goes out of his way to help students. He loves Math and made it very fun.
Turfe is a good teacher. Best I had in math at UM.
Great class! His extra credit problems helped me raise my grade from a B to an A.
Lets get this out of the way he is very intelligent. However when you ask for an explanation its almost like he thinks your stupid, he is extremely dry. If you take Stat TAKE MAHER this guy will say know chapter 1,2,3 im gonna test you on all of it. He doesn't care about his students and is a hard grader Dont take this guy. i got lucky with my A.
Prof Turfe, he my man. I worked hard but it paid off for me with an A grade.
Go to class, ask for help and this guy will take care of you. Make sure to show your interested and you will win him over as a teacher and friend. He is an excellent teacher.
he is satan on earth. exam questions go way beyond the level of difficulty of the homework, and require a calculator, even tho the homework does not. and ur not even allowed to use a calculator on exams. says he hates failing students, 60% of class failed. He is also a liar, when he says u should be good if u do homework. we did it all and failed
nothing you do in this class can help you achieve a good grade. either you have the mathematical mindset which his exams require or you don't. only case in which hard work does not pay off. before you invest your time and money with him, now that 2/3 students drop from a class of 30, and from the remaining 10, 4 fail with an F, and 2 with a D.
It was a good class because he gets it. He knows how to balance work and fun.
He is the best teacher, because he donate a room to the school they can't kick him out. He also gives some scholarships. So what if his test are crazy and the highest the average joe can get is a D, and he doesn't teach the way he tests? That doesn't matter, because he is still good, even if I got a D with tryin really really hard.
Do not take him
If you can avoid taking this teacher, do it. He is an expert in math and assumes everyone else is. I found him quite arrogant. He gives homework but never goes over it and the only thing your graded on it tests which has problems that don't even resemble what was assigned for homework. Did okay, but wish I took it with someone else.
Do not take this class. I had a very good GPA going into this class, and ended up with the first D on my transcript. He always lies the first couple of weeks to keep students in his class. After you take your first exam, results will be shocking. Over half the class will drop or fail. And he quite obv leaves himself good ratings on ratemyprofessors
If I were to retake this class again, it would definitely be with another professor. Avoid at all costs. Your grade is based on 3 exams and the final which isn't TERRIBLE but he puts ridiculous questions his tests. He never clearly answers your questions and when he teaches new material he skips steps which makes it harder to learn the material.
I got a B. My best friend got an A. If you do the problems you will ace the exams. Exams come right form the book. Teacher is smart, knows his stuff. But really, if you get a study partner and do the homework then you should do very well.
Not very helpful, but easy. He is wicked smart and sometimes out there. However, he knows his stuff and i appreciate that in a professor.
Some said stay away. The man like his name: Atalla the Hun. But if you get to know him, he be your friend. He go out of his way to help you. nothing for free, but the man will help. Only math class I got an A in so I took him for Calc and did ok, got a B.
Professor Turfe explains Calc in a way that was so easy and clear. Of the three exams, 2 were easy and one was hard but overall I thought he was fair. Great professor, I would take him again.
Best teacher I have had at UM. Always available and willing to help students. Loves the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings.
When I interviewed on Wall Street, I got the job because of Professor Turfe's recommendation. He is awesome!
This professor loves to teach. He takes the time to solve each problem step by step. He can solve a problem from different angles - he's the Payton Manning of math.
The Greatest. By far the most brilliant man in the department and a very fair grader. Work load is light as well as he assigns homework but does not grade it. Test are fair and mostly come from in-class examples. No need to read the book if you come to class.
Loved Turfe's class. He makes math fun and easy.
Professor Turfe mad what I thought would be a boring and hard class fun. Had a great time in this class. I highly recommend this professor.
He is a Fair professor. Knows his stuff. has a lot of connections and helps get internships at Ford.
The tests given don't match the level of the book. What is learned in class and problems done in the book do not come close to preparing you for his tests. Doesn't curve despite averages below 65% on nearly all tests. Does not understand when students fail. Its also obvious he boosts his own score on this website. Don't take if you value your GPA.
He moves very fast, but if your willing to do the homework he assigns and study hard you shouldn't have too much of a problem.
He's arrogant. Took calc I in high school got a B here too. Tests are challenging. My high was a 68. Will likely offer extra credit at the end though, and barely check it over which can save your grade. Usually answers questions with something you won't understand. Talk loud, he's Hard of Hearing. Avoid if you can. His high rating is misleading!
Worst math professor I have ever had. Does not care if you have questions, will ignore you and is very rude. Does a lot of examples but flys through them, make sure to pay attention and teach yourself. Mostly talks to the board rather then the class. Good luck!
awesome professor! love his teaching style. and if you read the book carefully, do the homework, take the notes, you can have a awesome grade!! every test i got A and always 90+.
I averaged an 88 in the class. However, because I attended each class and was there on time, he bumped my grader to an A. Doesn't like students who are tardy but if you show up on time, he is very helpful.
Tests come right from the book. If you do the problems in book, you will ace the exam. I averaged 96. He keeps office hours and was always there if I had questions.
This guy loves math and makes it fun and easy to learn. He is a Math God. During one class, the NSA called him on a question. Tests are right out of the book so I aced the class, easy A. More importantly, I learned the material. By the way, don't show up late to class, he does not appreciate tardiness.
Professor Turfe, I like him, I from Japan, and he appreciate far east peoples. He make me laugh and like math, too much. He call his friend for me and I got summer job, with Nissan in Tokyo. This man, he got respect all over world.
Easy A. good teacher. loves students.
He will challenge you. Keeps a boring class quite interesting. Overall, good guy, good professor. I would take him again.
Don't come late for class.he does not like that. However; he is very easy and test come right from book.
I don't recommend this guy old fashion He is good in his material but hard to deal with students no make up exam no excuse worst professor I had
He obviously knows his material. His problem is that he isn't good at teaching and explaining it. He will solve a problem on the board and expect the students to know what he did with little to no explanation on his part. I used to love precalc but this class makes me hate not only it, but life itself.
Professor turfe is a very nice guy and is very helpful in class. Although he goes a bit quick, he will answer any of your questions. Attendance is a must, if you get about 67% or up, he will bump you up to a passing grade if he sees you tried. Exams overall weren't easy. He throws crazy hard problems on them to mind screw you. 4 exams, one final.
I thought I was smart, but this class proved me wrong. I used to love math, but that isn't true anymore. Would not recommend nor take again. Four exams, online homework, and a final. One extra credit assignment. Harsh grading on exams. Doing homework might save your grade a little. Has his funny moments. Offers help on review day (day before exam).
Have never met a more rude prof in my life. The class is easy but he will make it hell. Exams are harder than the online hw. If you get one thing wrong on the test then there goes your grade. Toughest grader ever. He will also rub his tenure in your face a lot. Stay away!!!
THE WORST EVER!! DO NOT TAKE HIM
I ended up dropping his class and took it with another professor and got an A. 35 people in the beginning and at the end there was only 8 people left. Beware of his class. Homework is helpful but he said his homework is nothing like his exams which makes no sense at all. Stay away if you care about your GPA. Take Bazzi if you can.
He's a good professor but you have to work hard. I got an A+ just by doing homework and asking him questions the day before the exam. If you show interest in the subject, he'll grade you a little easier.
I took him during the summer and it was my only class. I went to the math lab every single day and ended up with a great grade. He really cares about seeing you do well. I had an A- and he gave me an A+ at the end because he knew I tried. Take him if you have the chance.
He's a great math professor. Online homework makes the tests a breeze. His tests are only 10 problems but you will get partial credit if you show your work. If you skip class, you'll be lost for a few days.
He is knowledgable and nice but if you already have a hard time in math do not bother. I took math 080 and 090 (math is my worth subject) and he is just too difficult. If you quickly grasp things then you'll be fine, but I cannot stress enough that if you struggle in this subject do not take him. If you show up regularly he'll round up your grade
Professor Turfe is one of the good guys: Compassionate, intelligent, and fair. As we say in the hood: "he got game." Show up to class, do the work, and you should do very well.
A kind man and very well respected in the math department. Exams are like 10-15 very difficult questions. Takes a very simple approach to calculus, and doesn't assign online homework. Has "homeworks" everyweek, which are actually inclass open notes quizzes. Would suggest him if you want an understanding of Calculus, but not an easy A.
Let me begin by saying he is a phenomenal math instructor. Probably the best I have ever had throughout my entire life. On the other hand, he is evil when it comes to grading exams. He pretty much won't give any partial credit unless if he feels like it depending on how he judges you. I have never gotten below a C, but had to drop him.
Very difficult Professor. However , very caring. Professor Turfe will round grades as long as you are honest and tried. You can be 4% away from the next letter grade but he will help you out. Extra credit is also offered and highly recommended. Test are a set of questions 10-15 that are modeled after the text book. Rubric is straight forward.
sometimes he isn't in his office during office hours, instead of emailing he might send someone to leave a sticky note saying class is canceled for that day, he doesn't slow down if you don't understand, there is no extra credit, there is no makeups, he covers a lot of information in one lecture, without previous calc experience you will struggle.
Rude. Expects you to understand the material before he has begun teaching it. Gets put off if you're having difficulty grasping the concept. He also reads this site, and was very upset (called an anonymous student out) about someone criticizing his decision to have us give a 10 minute presentation in a math class (?!?!) - VERY unprofessional.
A stunning man I tell you. Excellent professor. Very knowledgeable in every subject area. A polymath! Provides so many opportunities and points for extra credit and is very funny. Teaches material in a very clear way! His family shouldve invited him to be in family feud I tell you!
We used MyMathLab for any and all homework, which has an "unlimited tries" default. So you can actually work for that 100% in the class. He's easy to understand, makes sure you understand and makes this practical math very much so. Would suggest that you just buy the code for the book though. This book is close to 200 bucks. The code is like 150.
the best teacher to ever grace this campus, handsome yes, but Handsome doesn't pay the bills! all jokes aside, phenomenal man and great professor, best I've had. very concise and effective teaching style.
He is a really good professor as he is very accessible outside of class, is willing to answer any questions. He also really cares for his students as you talk to him outside of class and he gives you honest feedback and understands students. The only bad thing is that his tests (basically your whole grade) are VERY hard. take time to study a lot!
Does 5 examples in class. Then makes the class work on homework for 45+ min. Doesn't let you leave class. He will actually start yelling and chasing you if you try to leave. He likes to give a few problems on an exam and then be very harsh about grading. Run away. Run very far away, because he will chase you lol.
The first test was brutal. Lowest math grade I've ever gotten. 10 questions on basically anything up to trig. If you forget a negative sign it feels like that alone drops your whole exam by 1 letter grade. I don't want to be too harsh though, he said his final will also have a reattempt at redoing the whole first exam. He definitely knows his math.
So basically this guy kind of teaches himself, he writes problems on the board , doesnt explain anything has no dialogue with the class, skips steps in his problems and expects us to know what he did, and gets irritated if you ask questions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND A DIFFERENT TEACHER
