Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. Only allows one excused absence, which totally defeats the purpose of the excused part of the absence. I missed a lab once because I was at the doctor's office and I sent them a note asking if I could redo the lab, and I was told that I would have to take a 0 for the participation section. Horrible teacher.
worst teacher. his LA are sweet people and very helpful during lab except when it comes to quizzes you need to prepare in advance to not fail them and be on time or you won't be allow to do the quizzes and have the procedures written out cuz they are graded each time you come in which boosts your grades up tremendously. Good luck with him!
He relies on TopHat to grade everything however when you ask him to give you credit on a question you got right but the software says it is wrong he will not give you the credit. He does not really care about the students at all and unfortunately is the only teacher for this course. His TA's are great if you get the right ones. FOLLOW THE LAB RULES
The labs themselves are not bad however the instructions given on tophat are not clear at all clear and labs have to be explained by TA's The real problem with this lab was the unfair prelab quizzes full of gotcha questions these quizzes are designed on purpose in order to bring your grade down which is very unfair and disappointing
Pre-lab quizzes weren't terrible. The labs were not that difficult but the lab instructions on TopHat were unclear for the majority of the semester. The TA's had to explain the lab to everyone in class each lab. The post-lab reports were a joke. They included questions that were not discussed in class. Didn't learn anything all semester.
Its is mainly the TA's in the labs teaching but when he would come in he was extremely rude. I have nothing good to say about him. The post lab reports contain things we did not learn and were pointless. I did not retain anything from the lab nor do i ever wish to take or see him again.
All of the class basically depends on the TA that you get because Dr. K doesn't really do much for your individual lab, he just oversees all of the labs. The lab reports are pretty long and boring and a lot of stuff to do. The final exam was very difficult.
Some people may talk down on Dr. K but from my experience he is the most helpful person in the whole Science center laboratory building. As long as you show up to class and read the procedure before the lab you will do well in this class.
What TAs you get basically make or break the class. Dr. K doesn't seem to really care about students. There was a mistake on his or the TA's part that was affecting my grade in the class and it took forever to get resolved because he was blatantly not reading my emails. His responses were rude and he always assumed that I was the one in the wrong.
Make sure to go to Lab, even though you have a legal reason to absent, I would recommend you to go to the lab. He is ruthless when you absent for the class. One absence lab, then you have to get a B, unless you are not good in writing a lab report. Moreover, read a pre-lab documents and the procedures of the lab. It's useless but it matters.
Dr K doesnt care about anything. He literally screwed all of us with the chem 2 lab final. It was awful. Not enough time and they were almost all open ended and too In depth compared to labs. The average was failing and he didnt care. I had an A, but not after that. He also doesnt care that top hat is a piece of crap.
I hated chem 1041 lab. Dr. K is not very present. You rely on your TA. My TA was terrible at explaining. Read the intro for pre lab quizzes. Final was terrible so try to keep a high A in the course. I'm so glad it is over.
This lab requires the most work out of any lab I have ever done at Auburn. I had to prepare three days in advance at least to get all the work done by this teacher and the lab final was very difficult.
I have never seen him it all depends on your TAs. You will have a quiz BEFORE each lab about that lab so know your procedures. Besides that this class is really a can you follow instructions and do the math not hard.
Honestly, I can't make a full review on Karunarathna since he never was actually there for the class. I think I saw him about three times the whole semester and I don't think once he ever introduced himself to us. The quality of the lab is honestly just based on who you get as TA's. Overall the lab is a lot more work than I expected for it to be.
Dr. K is just a hard person to have for a chemistry lab. He is very curt and hard to understand. Definitely all your work for chem lab is what you put into it and not anything from Dr. K.
Dr.K doesn't interact with this lab, however the lab overall is difficult and tedious. The pre lab and the post labs can take over 2 hours in total at times and the pre lab quizzes are very difficult to get good grades on. The highest I've made on any of them is a C. This class is just way too much work for what it actually is.
the labs take awhile and can be difficult. you have to do prelabs which can take awhile because you have to copy it word for word so you know how to do the lab. prelab quizzes are very difficult and i never knew what to expect on them. i did bad on most of them but they don't have much weight. post labs can take a while and be difficult.
I don't know why these ratings are so low for this course. The labs are very straightforward and the pre-lab quizzes are fairly easy. Just make sure to write the lab procedure before class and you'll be fine. Professor isn't very personable but the course is fairly easy as long as you put in a bit of effort.
This professor is very easy. Just show up to class and do the lab and you will get an automatic "A".
Very nice as long as you talk to him.
His rating should not be this low. A lot of this class depends on your TAs, but Dr. K makes the grading criteria very clear and if you show up for class and do your work, you should do well in this class. Dr. K responds fast to emails and is helpful when you need something. The pre lab quizzes are kind of hard though.
I had Dr.K for lab and I honestly did not think they were terrible. They are just a really tough grader and they do not bump your grade up for anything.
It's pretty easy as long as you do everything. The TA's you get are also pretty important. I had good ones but I had a friend who's TA's were not helpful whatsoever.
I had great TA's and the class wasn't too difficult, just took some time to write the report and do the post-lab. The quizzes before the lab were always harder than they needed to be. But beware he will not round decimal points in grades! I finished with an 89.75% in the class and he would not round using the decimal point up to a 90, so I got a B.
He just doesn't teach. He relies on his TA's and your quizzes will always be hard. You genuinely have to study, and even then, you won't have enough time or the amount of knowledge needed for the quiz.
I really like him! He is more hands off in the labs to allow for his GTAs to teach, but he still helps throughout the labs. Sometimes, the lab reports can be kind of confusing, but I always email him and he is so quick to help me!
I took him for both chem 1 and 2 labs. I don't know why everyone is saying these things about him, but he is great. Yes, the labs are long, but they are easy and every kind of lab you'll take here will be the same length so it's no different. The quizzes are difficult, but you can still get an A in the class if you do well on the lab reports.
Everyone says he sucks but he isnt really around the lab. Lab is based on how good your GTAs are because they run the lab and Dr. K only pops in for hard labs to help out occasionally. He heavily uses TopHat for lab reports but as long as you have the data, its not too bad. If you email him, he is ~somewhat~ understanding about questions.
Dr K was not a good instructor! All of the course material comes from him and it is very confusing and hard to read. Luckily I had good TAs to help me through the lab. Every week they had to help me with reading and understanding the material because it was that bad!
Go to the lab. The labs are very student led and you have to figure everything out on your own. Takes a long time to write procedures each week. Some labs felt pointless. MAKE SURE THE GTA MARKS YOU OFF ON THE PAPER. Two times my GTA marked me absent and I got a 0/100 for participation. Happened to friends too. Karunarathna did not believe us.
Karunarathna continues to be a professor who rarely makes an appearance, so it's hard to rate them specifically. This semester though there were a few issues with communication, and sometimes either the labs sent through Canvas would be incorrect or extremely late giving us no time to prepare or do the pre-lab.
Has great labs and is a great help when he is in the labs. He is not in the labs a lot though so you will not see him often.
Had him for CHEM1031 lab and it was not bad at all. The quizzes were really the only hard thing; they were at home for the 1st half and then in class for second half. Final was pretty easy. Most of grades come from lab reports. The labs are pretty boring most of the time but really not too bad. Relatively easy A to get if you do all the assignments
He rarely showed up for labs and never helped when I asked over email. Over half of the class failed the final and their grades dropped a whole letter grade. You have to show up to every lab or your grade will be greatly affected.
I thought Dr. K was an excellent lab professor. I never saw him, but I did not think the class was too hard. I never emailed him though. I did my work and went to class. It is really not hard if you just pay attention and do your work. Grade is based off of post labs, so get good information. Writing the labs before the lab was annoying.
He is almost never in the lab so the TA's do everything. Almost identical to the setup for 1031, with everything on tophat. My TA's were not great, but I know thats not his fault. He is pretty accessible through email if you need to talk to him. Just really understand the lab before doing the report, almost all the grade is lab reports.
Dr. K honestly is nonexistent in the lab. I saw him maybe twice during the whole semester. The quality of the instruction really comes down to the TA's. The labs aren't insanely difficult either so a bad TA is not a dealbreaker. Just a warning... the final is difficult and you will want to have some padding for your grade.
Dr. K is never there. TAs do everything & can make or break class: we had one good one + one bad one. Contact TAs not Dr. K with issues. Show up to class, DO NOT be late. Do you work, prelabs are the most annoying! Make sure your lab work is correct, post labs key to grade. Final hard & worth a lot. Overall the lab is easy if you just do the work.
Dr. K is very much a silent partner in chem lab he makes his rounds but overall it is TA led. He is strict on attendance and grades are a mixture of participation and lab reports. Any high school lab experience is super helpful.
Writing procedures for each lab takes a dreadful amount of time, and pre-lab quizzes often included questions that were basically unintelligible. Labs are easy if your TAs are decent, just make sure to bring your procedures/data sheet and have your attendance marked. Post-lab reports are the bulk of your grade, easy enough if you get good data.
Professor Karunarathna is not involved at all so it depends on your GTA's. The pre-lab quizzes are very difficult are the written procedures can take a while. However, it is very easy to end the class with a very good grade.
This lab is very easy as long as you do the work and go to lab. All graded lab reports (60% of grade) are online and you have multiple attempts to answer them. I think I actually saw him twice the whole semester as TAs run the labs but am giving a good rating because the class was easy.
This professor sent out a mass email with everyone with accommodations. This is my main problem with him because that is a violation of the law.
CHEM1041 lab is not bad. Just do all your work, show up to lab, and you should get a good grade. Was very helpful when I emailed with questions. Lab reports are kinda hard so make sure to get help with the calculations while in lab. He will say final is really hard but it is pretty similar to all the calculations done for lab reports. Not bad frl
The lab is done by the TA's, Dr. K is never really there. Easy class, basically everything is online even the exam. But everything is pretty easy to follow, just read the lab instructions and you'll do fine.
He is super sweet. Obviously the labs are run by the ta's so that kind makes or breaks it for you. I attended every lab and just did my assignments on time. If you do the work its not bad. Lab reports are pretty simple and straight forward. The final is cumulative and a bit difficult but I made a C and still ended with an A.
The lab is ran by two TAs so they determine your experience. Dr. K sometimes comes in the lab to check out how everythings going but hes usually never there. Just do your quizzes, procedures, and lab reports on time and you'll be fine.
Dr K. is never there. Lab is run by two TAs who can either be really good or really bad, in my case they were helpful most of the time. Labs are not very difficult but writing the procedures before each lab was annoying and long. Lab reports are very simple and you should get an A on them if you get good data during the lab. Final was light work.
Chem lab is taught mostly by the TAs who tend to be very helpful. I always felt welcome to ask questions as needed. TopHat (lab report platform) is a bit finnicky, and lab procedures can be unclear online. However, TAs are helpful with clearing up any confusion during lab. Attendance is very mandatory!
Professor Karunarathna is not often in the lab unless he feels the need to review how to use instruments. He leaves most work up to his TAs. You must write your lab report before every lab and turn it in, or risk losing credit.
I had good TAs so everything worked well for me. Make sure you attend all labs, do all procedures and do not forget to do your lab report and quizzes. Also don't worry if you don't do good on the lab quizzes (do your best) but if you do the rest, they won't bring your grade down.
Make sure to write your procedure and bring it along with your data sheet to every lab. Try your best on the quizzes (they are hard), but they are only worth 15% of your grade. Make sure after the lab to fill out the lab report because that's worth 60% of your grade. The final wasn't too terrible; I recommend looking over the conceptual questions.
Very rude when he did show up to lab. Yelled and treated you badly if you made a mistake. Which is understandable for saftey but could have approached it differently. Too bad you can't take someone else. The TA's were amazing though and so helpful and sweet.
Dr. K is an excellent lab leader. You won't see him much but he is helpful when he is needed. Just follow his rules and participate and you won't have a problem with him. Pay attention to what your TA's are saying because that will be hardest parts of your lab reports. Absolutely make friends with your lab partners! You need them more than you know
Dr. Athauda Sasith Archachige Karunarathna is a heck of a name if I've ever heard one, and the bark definitely matches the bite. The pre lab quizzes are very hard, so you should try to convince your lab partner to take it first and then help you take it, so that you will get a better grade than them. He once falsely accused me of breaking equipment.
He wasn't really present at any of the labs, but they were easy. the TAs were really good so the labs weren't hard.
very easy to get in touch with over email. answers questions very fast through email. class is mainly run by TAs; however, he will pop in and out every now and then. very sweet and wants the best for his students. would highly recommend.
Labs were very easy. Not too much pre lab work and lab reports are so easy as long as you have your data. You won't see him often, so you have to rely more on your TAs. My TAs are wonderful and very helpful. You will get kicked out of lab for wearing shorts so don't do that. As long as you follow his rules you will do fine.
He's barely in the lab, and he's super blunt with procedures and if you are within the rules in the lab, but other than that, he hovers for like the first 10 minutes of class and then leaves for the next section and repeats. If the lab is tedious he'll stand near the back and will generally help you with answer any questions you have with patience.
Dr. K is barely in the lab, but when he is, he's pretty chill. Mostly depends on your TA's, but both of mine were great. Just stay on top of procedures, quizzes, and print out data sheets, and wear your lab equipment and you'll be fine. Ended up being one of my favorite classes.
Online lab reports were super easy and the TAs were great!! Labs weren't super complicated if you've taken a high school chemistry class. And the procedures are super straight forward and easy to follow. Also the TAs will answer questions throughout.
Dr. K showed up in the lab maybe twice. The teaching assistants make or break this class. One time that he was in the lab he got mad that we were doing something but the TA had told us to do it, so that was weird. He is the coordinator for all chem 1031 and 1041 labs so you don't really have a choice.
He never really showed up to the labs as he had so many to run. The TAs controlled everything but labs were super straight forward so it was fine. As long as you show up and do the hour or two worth of work per week you can easily make a A.
He rarely showed up to labs because he is in charge of all of them. The TAs will make or break the class. Mine were amazing. He is very nice and if you have any questions he answers emails quickly, even about the chem 1030 lecture. Offers extra at the end of the course.
He was never really in lab because there was at least 5 or 6 labs running at the same time. The TAs ran the labs so they can really make or break your grade. Participation is really important and they are not forgiving if you miss a lab or are late. Really easy class and very straight forward as long as you read the procedure.
Dr. K coordinates all the 1030/1040 labs but has TAs who actually run your section. He handles the grading of lab reports and he's pretty understanding so feel free to email him. Be warned, he made us write a hand-written lab procedure before class each week which I hated. I also had good TAs so maybe that's part of it. Make sure to wear pants.
Be prepared to do lots of handwriting, printing out data sheets, and submitting lab reports. You'll rarely see Dr. K, but all his TA's (in my experience) were great. Honestly really enjoyed the labs and helps you understand the math that goes with the CHEM 1030 lecture. Be aware if you miss a lab without an excuse, it'll tank your grade.
You have to handwrite your procedures before every lab, which can be annoying but usually isn't too time consuming. Don't ever skip doing them, they are worth 50% of each lab. Attendance really matters (obviously, it's a lab). Never usually lasted the entire 3 hours as long as you were doing everything right. Dr. K is a really cool guy.
Must hand write all procedures, and be sure to actually read or understand the procedure... your TA's determine whether you hate the class or not because you wont be seeing Mr. K too often. Not bad, quite enjoyed a few of the labs tbh!
This class is literally a free A if you just do the work every week. Write your procedure, do the quiz, do the lab, do the lab report. Everything but the quizzes and the final are free 100s, and the other assignments outweigh them so much that you only have to do decent. You do not see Dr. K much, but he is super nice and pretty funny.
Your lab will be all TAs, but Dr. K does show up sometimes. He is nice enough, kinda strict, but he never did anything wrong to me. The lowest lab and quiz grades get dropped, and there is a bonus point thing where you get 50 quiz points for cleaning stuff for 10 minutes.
Overall isn't a lot but nice guy. The lab really depends on you, your lab partner, and TAs. Mine were really good and overall the class was fun to be in.
Dr. K is strict but fair and you won't see him often. The lab was easy enough and straight forward, but he will NOT reopen assignments once they are past due. He offered some extra credit for at the end of the year but you can't rely on it to fix a bad grade. As long as you do your work and submit on time this class is a nice gpa booster.
This is my second semester with him, he is not around much, only to safety check our labs or give us a heads up. As long as you do your work on time and show up, you'll be ok. The grading policy seems strict, but he rounded my 89.6 to an A without me asking.
Fairly easy lab. All you have to do is write your procedure before lab and turn in the quizzes and lab reports on time to get an A. Dr. K is in charge of all the gen chem labs so he was rarely in the lab with us, but when he was he was funny and really has a passion for what he does.
Labs are run by the GTAs and are very straightforward. Although Dr. K was not often in the labs with us, when he was you could tell that he cared and has a passion for what he does.
Great class.
Cool dude, clearly passionate about what he does and is super approachable. Just read the procedure / write it out if it's req'd. GTA's run the class but ours were super sweet.
Dr. K is overall a nice guy and pretty easy to work with. His labs have lots of homework and he is very particular about how it is done, but it is mostly easy work (just make sure to follow directions). If you go to the labs and do your homework you will finish with a high A.
Super easy labs, quizzes aren't hard, the most work I had to do was write the procedure's down before class. I did have a very hard time understanding her accent, but it never impeded on completing labs.
Relatively simple labs. Takes some adjustment to remember to write procedures every week/take quizzes/finish lab reports, but if you have a calendar system it shouldn't be a problem. My TAs were not very helpful, though, which isn't Dr. K's fault, but beware that they may not be willing to help you in-lab. Overall recommend!!
Dr. K periodically walks through labs and is super helpful if you ever need him during his office hours. The labs are super easy and have never taken the whole time. Two TAs instruct the labs, and they are so nice and helpful! You have a 10-question quiz due before your lab, and you have to write the lab procedures and complete post-lab questions.
Easy, and the TAs were nice, but writing the lab procedures is tedious.
You never see Dr. K but his grading is pretty clear. Outside of the lab there is a lab quiz after where you put in your data and there is a pre lab quiz which is super easy. You also have to write the procedure out before the lab but it's not hard. The only difficult thing is the actual lab which is never hard but just takes a long time.
Dr. K is great. If you put in the effort, he is there to help. You have to write long pre-lab procedures but they are an easy grade. There are lots of quizzes online but are super easy. The final is also online. My GTA's were not the best and didn't help much with questions so it was a little difficult but not bad at all.
After a single group didn't clean up their mess for one of our labs, he took off 25 points from EVERYONE else in the room that lab day. Pmo.
He's good, not there much. My only complaint is writing the procedures but you get used to it.
The labs are led by the GTAs, but Dr. K came in before ours began (8 am...) to explain things to us as well. You can tell he cares ab what he does, and he's a nice guy. The labs were never too confusing, and the GTAs were very helpful if you got stuck
I took Dr. K for Chem 1031 Lab and would definitely recommend. Labs are taught by the TAs, but Dr. K will pop in occasionally. You get 50 points for writing down the labs and 100 points for the lab quizzes (super easy, you will make a 100). He even offered a 50 bonus point opportunity at the end of the semester, which brought my grade up 5 points!
Dr. K was a very good lab coordinator! He never assigned too much; and we just had to make sure we had everything we needed for each lab! There are not many options for CHEM 1031 lab, but he is a good one!
Don't miss any assignments. Super easy though.
Attendance is required or else you will not be able to complete the class. Be sure to do the Pre Lab quizzes before the lab and the Lab Report the night before bc those can make or break your grade. He won't reopen quizzes for any reason, however if you have a legitimate reason he will reopen a lab report. Overall fine Lab Coordinator!
Pretty average chem lab professor, super easy if you just do all the work. He's definitely strict about deadlines but offers bonus opportunities. Guaranteed A if you do all your stuff on time.
The majority of the points in this lab are from just showing up to the lab. Lab reports are super easy. How much you actually enjoy the lab comes from who your TA is. Overall, super easy and manageable.
