nice teacher
Honestly he is a very good professor, he really cares about his students. He makes sure everyone understands the concepts and doesn't bother to take extra time for it. Highly recommended.
Overall the professor is really great. He cares about his students and assures that everyone leaves the class understanding the lectures. You will definitely learn by taking his class. The tests are a bit hard. He designed the questions in a way that will make you think not just memorize the formulas and plug them to get the answers
This professor is super awesome. One of the best professors I've ever met in my lifetime!
He knows his stuff but poor teaching structure. There are no reviews for tests, there was one for our final if you went to his other class. Online quizzes are tough and don't correlate with his lectures. You must attend lectures because there are errors on his PP slides which he fixes in class.
Class consisted of 6 online assignments, 1 group project, 2 tests and cumulative final. Tests take about a week to grade and group project took longer. It was tedious and laborious. I will not take any further finance classes with this professor.
If you care about your GPA and learning, take someone else.
Awesome! I don't what the other students are talking about?!! He will get your concepts straight
Probably the best professor I've had in terms of teaching concepts. You might get a lower grade than expected because his exams are specific, but this is because he wants you to walk away with an understanding of all items taught in lectures. Fantastic with Q&A & is very knowledgeable, just might not be the prof for you if you want a GPA booster.
Lecture were dull and long, no reviews for exams and does not go over exams afterwards. Don't buy the book, you get access to it when you buy the online access for the quizzes. Quizzes were the only grades posted on time. Class was back loaded with quizzes and final, could have been plan better.
Inspirational? Nope, nothing inspirational just regular finance class. Caring? He does take time to answer questions in class and is fast to reply to emails, that's about it.
Lectures, book and quizzes will not prepare you for exam. Concepts are not same. Attendance is not mandatory but some slides contain errors and incorrect answers so if you have take this teacher go to class. Lecture lasted the allotted time yet we didn't make it through all chapters on syllabus.
He explains the matter really well!
He does not explain the matter well.
Don't even know where to start, he made finance harder than it had to be. I will not be taking his classes again.
10 case studies new groups every week AND a midterm + final v.s. just 2 examinations for the same course with a different professor?! Don't plan on having a life outside of this one class if you plan on taking this course with professor Ikram.
I have met all kinds of professors. No one drove me to write a review here in four years until professor Ikram. He is the worst because no matter how hard you tried, you can not get the grade you deserve. You are going to ruin your grades on other classes because of this one. Professor Ikram knows his stuff but he is just not suitable for teaching.
As I sit here at the mid term point of Mr. Ikram's class I still can't help but wonder what of type of sick experiment I have been forced into participating in. Avoid this instructor at all costs, this class has been one of my worst life experiences.
Applied Knowledge. Great Professor!
Dr Ikram is one of my favorite professors! I am learning a lot in this class ( I don't like my team though) and hope to take him again.
Professor Ikram has been my favorite finance teacher so far. He's honestly an amazing professor. He really takes the time to help students understand the concepts. I will say though, you won't do good if you don't go to class. He is willing to help only if you are willing to put in time and help yourself. The case studies aren't that bad.
Unrealistic expectations & slow grader (1+ month before you get an assignment graded). Also the amount of different groups is completely unecessary.
Professor Ikram has been the best professor I have ever had. He takes the time to explain the subject and really cares about the students.
Worst professor at ASU and single handedly changed my perception of the finance department in a very negative way. Avoid professor Ikram but the sad reality is that if you don't have priority registration you may be forced to take him.
Professor Ikram has been the worst professor I have ever had. He takes no time to explain the subject and really could care less about his students
I've had Ikram for several finance classes at ASU and here are my thoughts: 1) His classes aren't easy & neither are his tests but you'll learn A LOT. 2) Going to class helps a lot & so does seeing him during his office hours. 3) He DOES care about his students, but you have to demonstrate effort in the class.
Worst finance instructor period. He needs to teach during lecture students should have to go see him after class just to understand what hes trying to teach. He teaches what ever other professor teaches NOTHING new is learned by his teaching style. Being available to students is not caring its called having office hours.
Take someone else. Has only written theory and has not worked in the field. And it shows in class.
He's the first professor that motivated me to write a review in 4yrs. He teaches based off of theories and applies no real world experience. He reads off of the powerpoints every class period. He jumps around from subject to subject and does not thoroughly explain how to use excel. Go to his office hours if you want the grade you put in effort for.
Very Helpful!
Not Helpful!
Professor Ikram really makes you work for the grade but you come out with immense knowledge.
Be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed with this class. I dont understand why they keep giving him classes. Compared to the other professor my friend is taking Im not gaining anything new except for frustration
You can tell he cares about his students and he has restructured his course (based on previous reviews) and goes through all the chapters and cases and solves them step by step. That being said it is a very difficult class and personally, I think FIN361 professors are more to blame for the unpreparedness .. not Prof. Ikram.
I think this class was one of the more challenging classes I have taken at ASU. He grades very fairly - the projects and homework are great grade boosters and the exams are pretty similar to the homework. I had to go to office hours / the TA and do homework with other students but the class is definitely doable
Very lecture and case heavy, goes very fast as it's a 400 level class. He reformatted the class so it's not focused on group work with the cases, it's more individualized. You are graded on attendance (so you are there to discuss the case) and a 5-point quiz on every case (so he knows you read it). There is a hard midterm and final (w/ cheat sheet)
Fast paced, its very lecture heavy. Sign up early and take someone else dont get stuck with him.
Professor is great at explaining the matter! He is always available during office hours and I have used them a lot because its a tough course in general.
Prof. Ikram is amazing. His lectures actually taught me things I used to not understand in my previous finance classes. He uses real life examples to help you understand the concepts. Group projects are challenging, but the reward was worth it. I have an A so far in his class, and understand the material very strongly and am usually a B student.
This class has changed. The class is tested mostly on group presentation. Sometimes you don't even get chosen and you get a full grade. One final exam only. 25% of the grade. So until the end of semester you are grunted a C or B, and if you are good could get A. Would highly recommend taking his class. Very knowledgeable professor.
If you want to actually learn something in finance, and understand how the really finance world work, TAKE THIS CLASS! Very smart, and caring professor. Pretty relaxed except when it comes to class material understanding. There is only one final exam, and most of the 75% of the grade goes to attendance and group projects
Frustrating class. Grading done by TA so if you have questions you cant ask him directly because he didnt grade. Lecture leaves you will lots of questions which requires office visit. So add that to you schedule because youll be wasting your time in his office often.
An amazing professor and extremely coherent lecturer. Take his class!
Best teacher that I have ever had
Tough class, great professor
This IS a tough class, but the professor is amazing. It feels like I've learned more in the last 4 months than the last 4 years. Just pay attention, always ask for help, and you'll do fine.
Amazing professor. Definitely take him, you wont be disappointed
TAKE. HIM. Such a talented and passionate instructor. Definitely the most underrated professor in the Finance department/WP Carey.
Tough, but very fair. Make sure you start your cases as early as possible so you have time to ask questions if needed. He responds to emails in a timely and thorough manner. Great guy, wish I could take other classes with him
Pick someone, lectures are tedious. You'll be asking more questions than in any other classes you've taken before and not in a good way.
Take someone else, very tedious and over complicates lectures. You'll learn less and spend more time asking questions.
Pros: Prof Ikram is a great guy personally and wants his students to succeed. Cons: If you have a full time job, this class will be near impossible as I discovered too late. No tutoring services available for this class, I tried everything to no avail. Trust me, get ready for a new level of frustration and stress.
I have a 30hr a week job and I usually do pretty good in classes but, if you have no time or a finance internship related to IB you won't make it. I, personally, learn from examples and all that he gives are cases where you apply the theory. If you like lectures and just paying attention it's for you!
Ikram is tough. But he was probably my favourite professor at ASU, wish I could take more classes with him. He really helps the students learn, grades very fairly but is very tough with high expectations. If you work for it, it will be a rewarding course. Start the cases early, they are tough. I loved the class.
A very kind, and very caring professor. This class is difficult - not because of the professor, but because of the material. It is naturally very difficult. But, Dr. Ikram makes it worthwhile - only if you are up to it. Expect to work hard on case studies and spend some time studying. But - he provides you with all the resources for success.
There are two truths to every class: 1. He will go over class time every single class and rush teaching hard materials 5 minutes over. 2. There are no examples in class to work through together to understand how to approach weekly intense case studies. Yes, we learn formulas but I do not learn in this way personally. Weekly group work is awful!
If this is your only choice for this class this semester, take it next semester with another professor. There is group case analysis almost every week, heavy work, and have the quiz after that. So even it is a group case, you have to know everything in this case not only the part you did. CASES ARE SOOO HARD!
I am a graduating senior and I can say hands down this is the class I learned the most about finance in. His lectures are AMAZING. The cases are hard, but give it a good effort, pay attention, and he's not a super harsh grader. Take this class if you really want to pay attention and learn. Otherwise, take someone else.
The group projects will be your 13th Reason. They are tedious, intricate, and he does not discuss the case work material until after the cases need to be submitted. Oh, and just in case you want to feel like you're in elementary school again, he takes verbal attendance every lesson.
Professor Ikram is far and away one of the best professors I have had at ASU. He cares deeply about his students and helps you to understand the material on a conceptual level. Grading policy is very forgiving (60% is a C) and exams/group assignments are not bad as long as you attend class. Attendance points provide an additional buffer.
He is a great lecturer and really wants students to learn. This class is different from previous finance classes as it requires Excel and reading long & difficult case studies. I also found it difficult to balance this class with my other ones because it requires a considerable amount of time to grasp the material. I did however learn a lot !
This is the easiest class that I've ever taken. You could probably finish it in one week. But I did learn a lot of useful things so I would recommend this class.
Calls Attendance Each Class!! Rushes through lectures and wont answer student questions because he wants to continue his lessons. Yes, this class is harder than ACC340. Hard to See lots of kids not graduate because they are on their last semester and cant pass. Beware.
One of the easiest classes ever, very self paced you have from the start date to the end date to complete all the quizzes whenever. I finished this class within 3 days.
One of the easiest classes to take at ASU. The course was super easy to follow and I was able to finish the entire course in one day. It's a great class to take as a gpa booster or to take just because.
Sooo easy. I just wanted to make my 14 credit semester a 15 credit semester to have 30 credits per academic year to fulfill my scholarship requirements. You didn't need to do any reading or anything. Just had to take quizzes until you got a passing grade which I think was like 80% or something, I can't remember.
He is a good lecturer, and does his best to help students understand the concepts. This class is HARD, and you will need to put in time. He is a gracious grader, and does as much as he can to help your grade. I learned more in this class than any other finance class in ASU.
Everything you have read about this professor is true. lectures are taught at a ridiculously fast pace, he asks if there are questions but you find most of the time that you dont even know what questions to ask, group projects are ridiculous because he basically expects you to get stuff in correct because you have been taught maybe 40% of the info.
I personally dont understand how you can take this class and still enjoy finance. Group projects are ridiculous and hard, lectures are ridiculously fast, most of the time you dont know what the heck is going on. I will give the b of the d, he does want you to succeed, but the way he teaches the class does not allow for that to happen.
Class was easy for 1 credit. Pretty hard not to get an A. Does not give out A+ if youre looking for that try another class. Information is useful if you care and if not the credit is easy to get. Take this course!
Watch PlayPosit videos & answer questions, 1 mini quiz, and 1 test per module. Everything has unlimited attempts. There are 17 modules, u can finish the class in one day if u want. No A+s, but anyone can get an A. Super easy filler class if you need an extra credit or small GPA boost. The advice is also practical and useful to real life
This is a great class for financial planning basics. You can complete this course at your own pace. However, no A+ grade is given but you can get the easiest A. If you're struggling with your finances or budgeting, this class will help you tremendously.
Ikram has a well-structured online course for this class. I took it as an A course and although there were quite some assignments due weekly, you could get them done fairly fast and work ahead. Definitely a class to take for easy credits.
Worst professor ever. Not willing to help you outside class, and is not a generous grader. Toughest class at ASU, he could be a bit more considerate about students who are unable to graduate just for this course. Really tough group projects, if you don't get a good group, you're doomed.
Easiest class at ASU, it is just literally clicking through videos and taking quizzes (with unlimited attempts). Good for a grade booster. He also sends out messages with interesting articles that are relevant to students. Cool guy
Easiest course ever! Lots of play posits, but ACTUAL useful information to everyone's day to day lives! I blew through the course in Less than a week. Highly recommend if you need a 1 credit class. Easy A
super chill class—each module consisted of a few short video lectures, a mini-case, and a short quiz. you get infinite attempts on quizzes and the final. content is honestly what you make of it, you can easily blow through it all in a week or actually listen to lectures/read the supplementary materials. super hard not to get an A, def recommend!
easy class for an easy A. needed literally 1 credit left to graduate, so I took this and blew through it. grades consist of a couple video lectures (I put 2x speed on), one mini case, and one quiz each week. final test was also very easy.
Take any other professor for your own sake. Please.
Professor Ikram was literally a godsend. I wanted to start out by saying that I took his class online and even though it was SO BORING Professor Ikram was so great. And when I got so sick I was like nonfunctional for two weeks he still worked with me to make sure I could pass the class and extended the deadline. Love that man, would take again.
If you want to take a course that can help you apply the majority of the concepts you learn in finance, then do not miss this course. Not easy and attendance is a must. Lectures are a bit paced, but he covers the material you are supposed to know. Previous knowledge of finance helps. Make sure to utilise the office hours. He wants you to do good.
The professor's negative ratings likely come from the class's difficulty. He assigns eight group case studies, grading them generously, and gives quizzes similar to practice problems. While his lectures can be tiring, he's a great professor and a great guy. Don't be discouraged—if you study and work hard, you'll do fine.
Professor Ikram is the best professor I have ever had in my academic career. His passion for the subject is contagious and I find myself looking forward to lectures. It is a tough class, but he is always available to answer questions and he genuinely wants every student to pass. I am considering an MBA to take another one of his courses..
Responds fast ( max three business days, but he answers on weekends depending on his schedule), will push back due dates, create videos for practice problems which help extermely on the quizes. Just put in the work and ask for help Atif Ikram will be there to save the day. Don't listen to other posts, HE IS THE GOAT.
This class was very time consuming. We had to watch around 4-8 videos and you couldnt skip through them, along with a mini case and a quiz every week so that was annoying. Overall the class was fine, I got an A but a lot of homework. Not hard material though
Took this class to boost my GPA, and overall, I had a good experience and learned many new things in this class. I would recommend this professor!
If you are taking him and are worried from all the reviews, do not be. The class is challenging, but it is thought provoking and a great learning environment. You have 8 case studies and they are challenging sometimes, but if you go to TA or email prof he will respond very quick and help. Exams are hard but pay attention and you'll be fine
Take this if you are looking for an easy 1-credit class. The class taught practical financial information that I benefited from. No A+, but getting an A is super easy since quizzes have unlimited attempts. I'd say roughly 1-1.5 hours of work per week if you watch the videos at regular speed and pay attention.
Watch out!
Anyone else fail this class in their last semester after putting in the work?
Useful course. All assignments (quiz, exam, etc.) have unlimited attempts to get full credit. A common assignment is to watch a video and answer the questions that follow. It is annoying when you don't answer the questions correctly because you have to rewatch the video (at any speed you choose). But the questions are the same for each attempt.
The reviews here are either really bad or really good; here is my take: The class itself is very difficult, pretty much weekly quizzes, bi-weekly case studies, and the midterm/final are both hard. Professor Atif isn't horrible, but he does not level with students and (at least to me) comes across as "power hungry". Don't take him if possible!
Don't even think about it
this is genuinely insane. other professors with this course are easier from what i've heard from my friends. take anyone else but him.
Prepared to fail. He is the most controlling professor I have ever saw. No review guide for quizzes exams. He records the classroom with phone in exam. I don't understand why he still teaching in university.
Worst professor at ASU. Request another professor before signing up for his class. The only class I've ever failed. Not a bad person just extremely tough on students.
Genuine and caring professor. Tough class but everything is covered multiple times in class. Cases are graded mostly for completion and effort. Quizzes are definitely hard but practice problems he provides are useful. Exams are a blended of cases and quizzes. Study, come to class, do the case and you will be fine.
He drastically under-prepares you for exams and quizzes and makes them incredibly difficult. If you're a finance major, be aware that this course can impact your entire graduation plan, and the structure makes it harder to recover even if you're trying. I would not recommend taking FIN 461 with this professor unless changes are made.
Very smart guy. if you fail you didn't go. Like a lot of upper division classes it's group project based and easy to pass if you put in the effort. you need to do that though.
The professor should be fired for teaching so poorly.
