Does not know how to teach. Moreover her english is BAD.
She is an extremely helpful professor that knows the material very well. No language issues at all.
I think for your choices for instructors in these sorts of course levels she is very good. Not that there's anything wrong with the typical old white males who tend to teach these. She is a breath of fresh air, knowledgeable, easy to understand, nice to watch. Hard to say if she's especially more/less difficult. These are serious courses regardless
Dr. Tanaka has a very unique way of explaining things with crystal clarity & efficiency, and I found myself consistently impressed with her teaching style. She is very approachable and accessible outside of class. She uploads everything onto D2L early in the semester, test prep is exceptional and her exams are very fair.
Tanaka is a really nice and active prof, she is very willing to answer your questions. 395 itself is not an easy class so that you need to work harder in this class. As long as you listen carefully and review your notes, you can get a simple excellent.
Incredible prof. Best Economics prof in this university by far. 8/8
Atsuko Tanaka is an incredible prof. She knows her stuff as well as she knows how to teach. She has incredible notes that she posts and will help you with the assignments. Compared to other economics profs she runs it differently. One midterm, 5 assignments (two weeks to do each one) and one final. She is also clear what is on the exam. Very good!
Atsuko is such a good professor it's crazy. She simplifies topics that seem really difficult and she makes it easy to understand. Compared to ECON201 classes with other profs, her class is easy. She is very enthusiastic about economics and she makes you want to learn more. Also very accessible outside of class and she always responds to emails. 5/5
Dr. Atsuko is very caring and sweet. She always ensures that everyone understands, and is especially helpful during office hours. She made a making error on one of my assignment and corrected it right away. Overall an amazing professor!
Atsuko makes the class very easy compared to other instructors. She's a fair marker and very enthusiastic, making the material a lot easier. There isn't really a point in buying the textbook because her notes summarize it well. If you get the chance to take the class with her I recommend it, she cares about her students and its an easy A.
She posts EVERYTHING on D2L so you don't even need to show up to class. There is quite a few assignments but there are similar (almost identical) example questions available. The final was the only hard thing in the class.
Atsuko is a sweet prof, she cares about her students very much and in class she can sometimes be kind of a goofball and it's awesome. You can tell that she does her best to explain difficult concepts and the assignments are light and breezy compared to other ECON profs. Just go to class, do assignments and you're golden.
Her class is easy. She posts EVERYTHING on D2L so I stopped going to her lectures after the first month. Of the lectures I did attend she was hilarious. The extra questions she hands out during tutorials are very similar to the assignments, which makes them a breeze.
One of the best professors I have ever had. She is very informative and lists what she expects from the class. Assignments made 50% and were a breeze as she posts similar questions on d2l. I definitely recommend attending the tutorials because she basically goes over the similar questions as the assignment ones.
She is such a caring professor, and she was very accessible via email if you ever needed clarification or help on an assignment. She put literally every course material ever on D2L so going to class was not necessary at all. When I did go to class, it was nice. Sometimes it's difficult to understand her but you can get used to her accent fast.
Good ProfessorThanks for her help
Very nice and caring professor. Totally easy to get an A without doing much work. Just look a the stuff posted on D2L. The lectures are really confused but entertaining.
Atusko Tanaka is super nice, and cares about her students. The assignments are relatively easy, and I found that the best way to succeed in this class is to read and take notes on the textbook chapters. As a result, the course is a bit reading-heavy. Atsuko is the best econ prof to have because she doesn't mark unfairly.
Easiest A of my life. Atsuko is also the sweetest woman ever. Do the practice midterms and assignments and you are good. Half the class (myself included) had no idea what was going on but somehow still pulled through with good grades. She is definitely very smart as she tries to explains simple concepts in her mind that leave the class dumbfounded.
I recently took Econ 201 as an option class for fall 2019 with Atsuko Tanaka. She is an excellent professor. Almost every exam question was previously seen hence no surprises. The assignments were relatively long but they were easy therefore if the assignments were done properly and understood, the class is an easy A.
An amazing prof, class not overly complicated, her teaching made it easier to understand the topics as she summarizes the key concepts. She is easy to approach and replies to emails fast. Her assignments are easy as she posts similar questions to them on D2L. Her midterm and final are fair game - no surprises. Would really recommend her :)
I really lucked out for this class with Tanaka. Very straightforward, with no tricks. She will go over the assignment and the midterm questions with you in class. The final is known to be brutally hard so just be wary of that. Besides that, love this prof and will take her again in a heartbeat
she is truly the most caring prof. Her teaching is so easy to understand as she takes different approaches if necessary to make you understand at your level. Tests are exactly the same as practice midterms . final can be a bit hard, but she is always there to help. So, one of the best prof i've ever had
Really sweet professor - went to her office hours and was incredibly sweet. Tries to break down the concept into simpler constituents, which makes it easier to understand. Her exams and assignments were fair play.
Amazing, Amazing Professor! The way she explained made everything easier to understand. Really sweet, went to her office hours several times and was approachable, sweet and understanding. My only complaint is that she doesn't teach upper level econometrics :(
I didn't do as well as I had hoped but I'll blame that on online learning. Overall , Tanaka is engaging, interested, and only wants everyone to succeed. She's brilliant and committed to teaching her 11 am MST in Japan which was around 2 am for her. Assignments and tests are more than fair. Put effort in and you will do well and understand it!
She does a thorough job of teaching each lesson and making sure her students understand the topics. She provides lots of opportunity for practice and gives good feedback to any questions. The class has difficult parts to grasp, but overall, not bad.
Dr. Tanaka has been the best professor I have had so far (even though it's only been one term). She is caring, respectful, and she looks after her students. She is attentive and is easily accessible outside of class. Although I'm not the brightest student(proven by my grade), she really has the ability to teach students.
Considering that this was the first time classes were online, Tanaka was very accommodating and I think the lessons were delivered very well. The class mainly consists of lectures, assignments and tutorials. I would recommend doing the TopHat questions that she assigned, and definitely get the textbook. Attend as many lectures as possible.
Atsuko is one of the nicest profs I encountered last semester. You can get away with not attending the lectures because most her slides come from textbook and weekly assignments are reasonable and do help prepare you for the exams. The midterm and final are don't have a lot of surprises because she posts a lot of practice questions on Tophat & D2L
I found her tests to be more difficult than the practice questions she assigns and sometimes she doesn't fully explain concepts. I wouldn't say this class is a grade booster as it does require quite a bit of personal effort to understand concepts outside of class. The assignments were fairly easy and you get to skip two of them as some are long.
Dr. Tanaka is a very nice prof with very straightforward lectures. She explained everything thoroughly and was always open to questions or comments. This class was definitely a bit of work but if you study enough for the tests and finish at least 8 assignments, you should be golden.
Dr. Tanaka was the nicest prof I had this semester. She is very caring and also very helpful. Her lectures were amazing especially for the online format, and is always happy to answer questions.
Tanaka is an absolute gem of a prof. Well designed course. She only gives assignments and 2 exams so the weight of the midterm and final is lot - so keep that in mind. I think her course is extremely fair, and easy (my opinion). She is willing to help (doesnt tell you to ask the TAs). I would take her class again in a heartbeat
She is absolutely one of the sweetest teachers Ive ever had in my life. While I did really bad on both the midterm and final, that was my fault (Im just bad at math) Right now the grading is a little messed up, so beware of that, but otherwise shes awesome! Took the time to upload every single lecture onto D2L so you didnt even have to Zoom :D
She is just more than amazing. You get to learn things and "study" for it. She always explain course content in detail and pause to see if we have questions. However, the exams weight heavy when it comes to deciding your final GPA. She requires at least one A on your midterm/ final to get a final grade of A. So don't slack off!
She is such a gem & such a cute lady. You can tell she cares about her students and likes to see them succeed. Assignments were super easy and midterm and final were fair. She responds to emails super fast and is overall a great prof.
Great professor who actually cares for the students in her class. She explains everything to the best of her abilities and is able to acknowledge any mistakes that she may have made during the lectures or in assignments. You can get through the class just by attending lectures so the textbook isn't necessary. Would definitely recommend this prof.
Worst instructor ever. Just a waste of time. You will learn nothing
She is knowledgeable and always approachable. Her assignments are a little bit hard to be honest, but she always gives homework hints through out the lecture. The final is harder than all other components in this course, so get ready to study (The final is cumulative). It's NOT an GPA booster class, but it's an enjoyable course overall.
Knowledgeable prof who cares about students and is passionate about what she teaches. Reading the entire textbook isn't mandatory - if you attend lectures and take good notes, you can get an A. Do the assignments and attend the tutorials. Lots of similar questions show up on the midterm and final. Very straightforward and fair assessments.
Absolutely abysmal grading system. Extremely vague and just changes the grading criteria without informing the class. Super slow at replying to emails and only reiterates the same thing repeatedly rather than fixing the issue. Avoid her at all costs. I was curved down from an A to a B+, even though my weight average is still supposed to give an A.
Solid.
A true gem.
Easy course. She goes in-depth and is accessible outside of class. She ensures everyone understands. Tests are much more difficult than the easy A assignments.
She is a so nice person, trying to answer all the questions for students. Fast e-mail reply, a easy ( I should say not hard) final exam. However, to get a A is super hard in Econ in UCalgary. Lots of students with 85%-90% (5,6 wrong in the final exam) stay in B+ or A- like me.
The online delivery for this course was bad, zoom was just prerecorded vids of her teaching. i attended all lectures, tutorials and read all the readings but it felt like nothing could prepare me for quizzes/midterms. this did not feel like an intro course and topics were not explained clearly. 70 C but 86 still A-, not fair for intro class.
tanaka's grading rubric is awful, a 90 is a b+ this is an intro econ class, etremely unfair considering our 5 page give or take assignment was out of 10 marks and our quizzes will be 14 questions and out of 10 marks so it is very easy to do bad even if you put in a lot of work.
Extremely unorganized. Live lectures just composed of her playing her recorded videos. Although the course material is decently doable, you really have to learn things yourself since she doesnt really explain things. She doesnt answer questions properly either, and her assignments are insane! (14 page assignment 10 marks). Wouldnt recommend.
If you have Dr. Tanaka as your prof for Econ 201 I highly suggest switching to a different prof/class. I had to learn everything myself. Her live lectures consisted of her playing pre-recorded videos of herself. She was horrible at answering email, and almost every quiz had an error in it. Also the grading rubric is ridiculous for an intro class.
Do not recommend Dr. Tanaka AT ALL. She was so slow at replying to emails and during her live lectures would just play pre-recorded videos. The grading system is also ridiculous. I was curved down from an A to a B+, even though my final grade weight was still an A. Abysmal class for an intro course. Not fair at all. Do not recommend.
Dr. Tanaka was AMAZING! The course consisted of two assignments, weekly quizzes, midterm, and final). Her videos are recorded, which means you can pause the video whenever you want. All of the information are given in the lecture slides, notes, and in the lecture itself, so readings are not mandatory. Would've been a lot easier if I did not slack
I would not recommend having this prof. You basically have to teach yourself everything because she is extremely slow at replying to emails. During live lectures, if you have a question, she does not necessarily answer it fully. The grading rubric is insane for an intro class as well.
Professor Tanaka was an excellent professor, especially considering the fact that she was dealing with health complications related to food poisoning throughout the second half of the semester. As a whole, however, the quality of her teaching was exemplary. The class was well structured, and students were given many opportunities to ask questions.
Really a good professor.
Lectures were drawn out, and often all over the place. On multiple occasions, corrections had to be made to the correction key on exams. That being said, by just reading the textbook chapters and not much else, I got an easy A+ in the course.
Unless you are emailing her with questions, it is really hard to learn from her lectures. Her accent is hard to understand and it is really easy to get lost in her lectures. If you do have questions she can be really helpful for one on one learning but for this class, my textbook was my teacher luckily it covered just about everything in the class.
so messy her layout of her notes and how she organizes the things are very bad. Her lectures are all over the place.
IF being organized was a place in New York, you would find her in albuquerque New Mexico
Such a bad prof, her notes are sooooo bad. If you take the class with her prepare to learn it all yourself cause she is useless
Bad prof all together, never take a class with her. Menace to every society
The class was the most unorganized thing I've ever seen. she has 4 different notes per lectures and flips back and forth between them every 2 seconds with no explanation. Theres basically no reason to pay $600 for this course when you can teach your self in the textbook for $25.
I feel bad for anyone who has to take her class, I pray that she learns how to teach but I don't think my prayers are gonna come true
Bad prof don't take a class with her
Literally worst prof ever. She seems nice but she's sooooo disorganized and all over the place and hard to understand. Her notes are the worst things ever. I literally find ochem easier than doing her notes. Class gives me a huge headache, save your self the trouble...
Dr. Tanaka is a very nice lady, however her teaching skills are poor. Lectures are extremely confusing and disorganized.
I don't understand the spam of recent negative ratings on Tanaka. Very accommodating prof that provides students with plenty of resources for success in the course.
Final and midterms are super hard. Assignments and quizzes are easy.
Dr.Tanaka really wants her students to do good, super helpful during her office hours and a very fair grader. Make sure you attended her lectures and practice her past exam problems.
Dr. Tanaka is a good prof. She tries to answer students' questions in every lecture class. However, the final and the midterm exam are a bit hard, but as long as you attend her every lecture, you will get a good grade on it. Overall, I would take her class again if I have chance.
She had no control over her online class. Allowed chat to be flooded with irrelevant comments distracting from the lecture and answered ridiculous joke questions. Spent two months answering questions clearly stated in the syllabus. I stopped going to lectures entirely and taught myself last-minute from the online textbook before each assignment.
Overall Prof. Tanaka is very relaxed in her way of teaching and goes straight to the point with the content. Managed to learn everything I needed and her quizzes/tests were not easy but not too challenging.
Strong accent but very attractive and fun
Nice lady bad teacher
Very bubbly and fun to listen to, if it was taught by anyone else, it would be a COMPLETE snore-fest! Difficult material, though -- It's like putting common sense into graphs.
Very kind person, however her teaching style is very hard to follow; she jumps around a lot making things hard to understand, especially with her accent. Be prepared to use the textbook & the internet to teach yourself the concepts. There is no practice problems provided along the way so you have no way to check your knowledge before examinations.
Rushes her classes way too much! Why are other Econ 201 professors on Chapter 4/5 while Dr. Tanaka is on chapter 12?!!
her teaching is all over the place, expect to teach everything yourself
prepare to teach yourself EVERYTHING. Lectures are extremely fast paced (other lectures are multiple chapters behind us). She talks so fast and there is no structure to lectures. Why do I pay tuition just to teach myself everything from a textbook?!
Tanaka's teaching style personally doesn't fit well for first-years from HS. Her classes are commonly disorganized, hard to follow at times, has late-night work postings and expects you to know the content in the morning. She talks fast, covers/condenses too much content within one class, and often makes mistakes in her work without realizing.
A lot of quizzes weekly to understand lecture much better. Quizzes and midterm are quiet easy if you read through her lecture notes. Talking abt the lecture notes, they are really useful if you missed the class and still want to understand everything of the lessons.
Her lectures were horrid. They were all over the place and extremely unorganized. She moves way too fast and never finishes a train of thought. The only reason I would take her class is if you want east exams, however you have to teach yourself everything.
Easily the most disorganized professor I've had. Unreliable and had to go through the TA's for everything as she wouldn't respond. The one thing is, she REALLY wants the class to get a good grade, to the point where she said she would make the final easier because the class average on the midterm was bad. She often makes mistakes. Overall avoid.
weekly quizzes are useful but the exams are tough and you need to teach yourself as its hard to catch up
Tanaka is a decent lecturer but she often rushes through many parts, making some concepts hard to understand. There will be some times where you have to teach yourself. Her weekly quizzes though are quite helpful for you to see where you are in terms of the material. Overall she's a decent prof, just wished she slowed her lectures down a bit.
There is a great deal of info in every lecture and they are rather fast paced. She goes above and beyond by being very engaging in D2L and quick to respond and it's always helpful.
Her assignments are annoying, tell me why assignment two was like 55 PARTS?!?!?!?!!? and it wasn't even simple for the most part. Her lectures were pretty awful too, for the most part, she rambles all over the place, and its hard to follow her as she randomly switches from the slides to her notes.
I got to tell you, it was perfect. Perfect. Everything, down to the last minute details.
Perfect is the only word can describe this prof. There are a lot of practice materials so that you can review the chapter again after the lecture or prepare for the exam.
Atsuko Tanaka is an accommodating professor and a very sweet person, however, her teaching style is really poor (lectures do not cover the questions she will be asking in the midterms and quizzes and are hard to comprehend) + Had to use youtube to understand key concepts. Take this class if you already understand econ and need the credits for it.
This class has so much content Prof speaks really fast. Too much to catch up on, you have to teach yourself. Online quizzes & assignments are straightforward if caught up. midterm and finals are really hard require a lot of studying. Study previous midterms + final. would avoid taking this class. Not a grade booster, I struggled to get this grade.
She really wants her students to succeed but she really does go fast. I think she explains things in a way that aren't very econ-beginner friendly; I had to look up other resources online multiple times to understand concepts better. She gives a lot of time to complete quizzes/assignments. It was a lot of work but overall a good experience
Professor Tanaka was a good prof, she is knowledgeable + cares about whether or not students understand the concept or not. Just a reminder, this isn't high school, so be prepared to advocate for yourself and speak up in/after class with the prof or the TA. The pace of things does pick up after the midterm so watch out! GO TO Tutorials = Lifesaver!
The class is very lecture heavy and moves at a fast pace but the professor is very accommodating.
I found her lectures incredibly useless and her notes were pretty awful. I had to teach my self everything via textbook. The midterm was so unorganized and chaotic It felt surreal. The only thing that was good in a way was the weekly quizzes because if it wasn't for those, I would probably have given up on self studying and keeping up entirely.
Friendly lady, however the lectures were a bore and were challenging to understand.
she was very disorganized, would jump around topics sporadically, and would be easily confused by questions asked by students. notes were not clear and hard to prepare for the midterm/final. easy to boost your mark with simple weekly quizzes and assignments, but had tough exams. exams are curved tho! but overall would not recommend tanaka
Really awesome prof, very enthusiastic about teaching. goes off tangent and can be hard to follow sometimes. but cares about teaching and you can also ask for extra help during her office hours!
Amazing professor! she's always eager and willing to provide extra support outside of class. goes off on a tangent sometimes but which prof doesn't. still amazing!
Atsuko is very caring and passionate about what she teaches, she really seems like she tries her best and implemented our feedback to make the class better throughout the term
The lectures were fast-paced and difficult to follow at times. However, the weekly quizzes and assignments helped boost the grade. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for preparing for the challenging midterm and final exams.
She spoke clear and the course was easy. Nothing negative to say.
Consistently has typos, explains definitions not connected to the correct term, extremely disorganized
Awesome prof! Anyone giving her a low rating probably just didn't put enough effort of their own in the course. Stop expecting professors to hold your hand through every class and put in the work for uni. She was caring, energetic in her lectures, and explained everything well. I'd say the assignments were long, but overall I'd take her again!
Amazing professor! She is one of the kindest human beings I've ever met. The way she explained things made the class so much more fun and it really motivated me to try my best. Overall, her class was one of my favorites among many and I would definitely want her to teach me again!
She is a good professor with a reasonable course load. She has a bit of an accent and can get confused when talking but she is very caring and fixes her mistakes quickly. All of her material is uploaded and you can ask her for help to explain anything you missed. It's not a very hard course, just show up and do the occasional practice question.
She is an amazing professor, I mean, really, top-notch. Very understanding, compassionate, kind, and cooperative with students. She answers emails within the day, tests and assignments were fairly straightforward, just read over the lecture material, do the previous finals, and you'll be golden with her. Overall, amazing professor.
Unliked 99% of Profs she actually cared. Super passionate for economics and extremely kind to all students. Responded to emails almost instantly. She was going through immense person problems during the course, but managed to provide quality lectures and answers. Awesome prof!
Tanaka is absolutely the best Economics 201 professor you can take. Provided fill-in-the-blank notes before classes, and notes were easy to fill out given you attend the lectures. The concepts she taught were explained well, and she is very accessible outside of class as she replies to emails quickly with good feedback.
