dropped class because on the first day she made us sign papers saying that avg grade might be a C; terrible!
Having her for one day gives no perspective. Great teacher, demands a lot but you'll leave class having learned something.
Arbirtary grading (great for people who can suck up). Unapproachable. Patronizing to the conservatively confused, down right passive agressive to credible intellectual objectors. Offensive to addicts and girls.

Dr. Brokes is a very nice person, but the classes are terrible. Very boring, confusing, and when you ask a question, you do not get an answer. Expect a lot of difficult readings.

i agree with the other post about abitrary grades, i wrote a paper knowing how she felt on the subject and got a much higher grade then the paper before disagreeing with her and i thought they were equally good papers....
A hard but very fair teacher. She makes you think about things that you wouldn't have considered before. I recommend her!
Definately tough things to read, but definately a very fun class. She can go on tangents, but often they're more fun than boring
Awesome person, really keeps you entertained. Really hard subjuct. She curves at the end which is a big help and is willing to give you pointers on how to improve your grade. If you want to learn and have a good time take her.
Awesome lady and class, TAKE HER!!!
she's hard and confusing. She's fun and goes off on crazy tangents and calls her parents randomly from the phone she just discovered in the room. The readings suck but there are three or four tests and a take home mid-term essay. Overall not too bad, but i know other people who had it way easier.
Brokes is such a hard teacher. She's crazy and never really gets her point across. When you ask her questions she never really gives you a direct answer. Her tests are real tough too. I would recommend not taking to this class.
No, the class wasn't easy -- but trust me, none of your moral philosophy classes will be cakewalks and she actually made hers interesting. She may be a little quirky (see comment about calling parents) but she's enjoyable. I kept my notes from this class and truly enjoyed the experience.
total psycho... im pretty sure she does crack too. her class was hard, and she didnt seem to realize that so she just went ahead and tried to teach it anyway.
Anyone who doesn't like Dr. Brokes' simply doesn't like philosophy. It's hard? That's why your parents are paying for it! She's an excellent teacher and always willing to help out after class.
Explains phl right down to the last possible detail. She would spend an entire class on one thing if one person didn't understand it. Very happy with course. Didn't take attendance.
TAKE HER,especially for moral philosphy. her class is more discussion based. you HAVE to do the readings though, but usually theyre not that bad. grading is 3 tests, midterm paper and a final, plus she curves everythinig.ps she goes off on random tangents that are actually really funny
Worst teacher! She also brings in her annoying dog. Class attendance is very important. Her gittyness got very annoying.
Throughout the history of the world, there has never been a more awful teacher. She is such a bad teacher that it is possible that she's not a teacher at all. She may, in fact, be a leader in un-learning. Don't take her classes unless you think you already have too much knowledge.
Death is preferable to taking a class with this teacher. She the Platonic form of awfulness. Oh, and I hear that she writes her own evaluations on rate my professor! So you know whom to trust! Ick.
I dont know what all these people are talking about.... Brokes is a great teacher. you dont have to learn anythng or read. Highly recommended, especially when she brings in the dog! :)
Worst teacher ever...I put in more time for her class than I have ever put in to any other class in my life, and I still got a lower grade than all of my other classes (more than a letter grade difference) she picks favorites, and if your opinion doesn't match hers, you're screwed!
No natural language possesses the expressive power required to capture how truly awful this teacher is. One might try using a fully interpreted formal language, but even then one suspects that at least one predicate will designate the unit class containing only her: the worst teacher ever. Imagine a teacher that bad, and stay away!
Although it is logically possible for Dr. Brokes to become a good teacher, the probability of this ocurring approaches zero asymptotically. Principle of good reasoning, thus, suggest that the best course of action is run away from her at a speed that asymptotically approaches the speed of light. Flee, while you still can!!
The Zagat Guide's review: Dr. Brokes is "a very odd duck" and her assignments are "as hard as cold cement." Some students enjoy "the atmosphere of a dentist's office" that characterizes class meetings, but others report that "they'd rather eat dirt" than attend class with her. "I never learned nothing," reports one. Advice: avoid this teacher!
too much work for a GER. Do not take this class. its just not that interesting
One of my fellow students described Dr. Brokes as "about as helpful as AIDS." Her lectures are all over the board with many nonrelated stories. She's hard to follow. I still feel as though I know nothing about philosophy. Although she cares about her students' welfare, that's about as far as the good qualities go. PS- she rates herself for fun.
Truly awful. Unless you already know everything it is impossible to learn anything from her. She is obnoxious, and thinks that people should actually think and care about their work. What a jerk. If it were up to me, I'd see that she's fired. As quickly as possible. Never take a class with her. You'll be sorry you did.
It just can't get any worse than this. Well, I guess if Satan taught the course, it would be worse, but only marginally -- at best. The genuinely evil nature of Dr. Brokes is evident the minute you meet her. I dare you -- no, I double dog dare you -- to listen to a lecture and not become hopelessly confused. Run away... as fast as possible.
Dr. Brokes was an amazing teacher - i dont know what these people are talking about. she is hilarious, quirky, and relatively easy. go to class and pay attention, and you'll get an A. also, she puts a great gender/GLTB/minority rights spin on almost anything - makes the class interesting and relative to your own life. we had a blast. take her!
Not completely terrible, but a bloody hard grader and, though I can't put by finger on it, vaguely unpleasant personally. Frustrating.
Not as bad as everyone is making her out to be..yes, she is a hard grader, but if you go to her she really helps you
Professor Brokes writes her own ratings here and makes her self look very negative, she is really very very easy.
dr. brokes is amazing. if you take her class--you will be a better person. do it.
The only thing I can figure is that the people who gave her a bad review wanted to get an A while doing no work. This is college people! She's so awesome. She will sit down with you and go over everything until you understand it. Such a nice, cool person. The only Phil. Class I ever wanted to go to. One of my favorite classes ever.
Great teacher, really cares for her students. Very clear and a lot of fun in class. Highly recommended
She is the best teacher at St. Joes! I've taken her 3 times, which might sound crazy, but it's totally worth it. She's super helpful and her class is never boring. However, you will have to work for your grade, but what do you expect? Highly recommended!
Simply a wonderful person. So bright but so clear. Really works hard to make even the toughest material completely understandable. Never saw her appear unpleasant in the very least. I really can't say enough about her. I can sometimes understand where people are coming from in their negative reviews of profs, but not with Brokes.Take her if you can
Do not take this class online. It is a total disaster. Brokes is a nice person and will try to help, but the material presented in an online fashion is difficult to grasp. I came out with a great grade considering I have no idea what I learned. This class should not be given online.
plays favorites
Brokes and I started at St. Joe's on the same day back in '97; her as a professor, I as a student. The course was the Human Person, and we studied what she "taught" about Plato, Socrates, Mill and MLK. A year ago, I checked out her course reader and saw she had added Marx to the list. Communism has only killed 300 million in the last 80 years.
All that is great about a teacher-Brokes is none of them. The intense loathing I have for her & her class cannot be put into words. Also two-faced. Oh, and she's out of her mind. Class consists of pointless, boring ramblings about nothing with an occasional obnoxious joke or story and thinks she is funny. Could make u angry just to look at her.
I think that I am the absolutely worst teacher in any university in the continental US -- there are perhaps worse teachers on planets yet discovered by human beings. No student should take courses from me unless they have a wish to suffer and learn nothing.
Good class. Mine consisted of 8 students. The discussions were good and everyone was respectful. Although she did threaten to "****ing Kill" us, but then gave us all A's for the semester. She might eat babies though.....
This semester I am worse than ever. As a previous reviewer stated: I am worthy of loathing and possess none of the virtues of good teaching. How true! I wouldn't eat babies, however. Icky. I have also discovered that I am the worst teacher on the planet -- not just in North America. How could I have overlooked my awfulness to that degree??
Audre is whats up. It doesn't look like she has many fans but if you've had her for more than a semester you realize how much she cares about you. she'd probably lay down in traffic for her students. get your acts together kids and take her class, she knows a lot and she'll help you if you help yourself
Audre is a fabulous teacher for those who already know a bit about philosophy. The material is challenging but she is always available. HUGE weirdo, but in a good way. She makes class interesting even if it's not about the material. You don't necessarily have to go to class, but to get a good grade you need to.... i know from experience.
Confusing material not presented in a clear way; tended to only focus on details of subject matter, not on the lesson as a whole. Ridiculously difficult to understand and follow. Easy essay grader, though.
I LOVE THIS TEACHER. She understands college. She gives you respect, and doesn't go power hungry. She treats her students as equals, and in return, they respect her back. She is relaxed about rules, but it actually makes students want to follow them. She trusts her students.
she is extremely funny but the material is tuff. my first two assihnments were c's but then i went for help and ended up with an A- in the class. She understands that we have other classes and respects us as people not as students. Great teacher but not a free ride.
hard to understand, helpful when you go to her, although she sometimes forgets to show up at meetings, will know your name. if you love philosophy and don't mind a challenging GER, take her. If you have no interest in the subject, do not take her, or your semester wil be torture.
Dr. Brokes is awesome. I took her for Human Person and learned so much more then I thought I ever could in a philosophy class. She is a leanient grader and is available for help and discussion always. She bent overr backwards to get me in her Feminist Epist. class which shows how much she actually cares. Best Philo Teacher EVERRR soo funny
Very difficult to figure out. Wouldn't recommend to those who are used to getting A's. If you into philosophy then she's perfect for you bc she brings up interesting subjects that I will never forget. :)
hated her. she failed me. and told me all semester i had around a b....then the day before the final she said if i dont get above a 90...i fail the course. THE DAY BEFORE THE FINAL!!!!!
She was intimidating at first but just wants her students to do well. She goes out of her way to help out with papers and she enjoys teaching. I really liked her class
She's a funny lady and enjoyable to listen to at times. The material can be rather boring. She has 5 tests that are all worth 20%, which makes up your grade. If you are having any trouble, go to her and she'll actually help you. Nice lady
pretty good teacher but i dont recommend. for a gep course you can prob find someone easier.
All around an awesome person. I seriously just want to hang out with her. She's tough but even if you don't get a great grade, you'll learn a lot.
It's a pretty tough class, and probably even harder to teach, so I can't blame her for the grade I got. She has a chill personality, and I actually think it's a necessity to have a teacher like her during your college years. She can be a pretty tough grader, but will always be willing to help.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways! I may have nearly failed her class, but she opened my mind to new ways of exploring and understanding art. She is truly intellectual and inspiring. Also the most respectful and fair professor I have had during my college career. Not an easy grade, but you will learn more than you can fathom. Audre rocks!
She is extremely difficult. Does not explain clearly and just expects you to know and do everything on your own. you cant use her words at all. Plus its very hard to figure out how to do well on the test and hard to know what she expects. I would avoid her at all costs, unless you dont mind being frustrated all of the time. Only 4 tests plus final
Absolute worst teacher I have ever heard. So unhelpful and uncaring!! Do not take her, avoid at all costs. The way she teaches leaves you so confused! Oh and the tests, if they aren't in your "own words" you basically fail. Now considering most of the questions she asks are defining things and she explains these in class one way and one way only
Great professor, sure she is challenging and doesn't give students all the answers but hey, isn't that the purpose of college? She demands students to create opinions and original perspectives and that is both part of philosophy and the real world in general. 1 large paper, mid term and final and several short assignments. pretty fair.
Dr. Brokes is a wonderful professor! She really cares about the subject and will help you when you need it. Her passion makes the class worth it and you get out of it what you put into it.
I absolutely adore Dr. Brokes. She's hilarious (and curses like a sailor) and super intelligent. Logic isn't an easy subject and she knows that, so she makes it easier to understand. There isn't any homework and attendance is optional. Your grade consists of four tests (two in class, two take homes), a midterm, and a take-home final.
Loved Audre as a teacher. She tries really hard to help you understand and is very accommodating especially when it comes to office hours and rescheduling exams due to a schedule conflict.
Dr. Brokes was a great Philosophy professor. The topic is hard to grasp but if you attend class and take good notes she makes it easier to understand it. She is a tough grader on exams, especially the essay portions. She doesn't assign any essays compared to most philosophy classes.
Brokes is incredibly intelligent and does a good job of teaching the topics. However, she is the TOUGHEST grader I've ever come across. She'll give you specific notes on what to write in your essays then still take off points for "not being specific enough." Worked my butt off, went to office hours, and still found it almost impossible to do well.
Horrible. If you're looking for an easy grade because of the GEP this class is not for you. I had to study for HOURS just for one exam and barely got a B. She does drop an exam but she's a very, very, very tough grader. So good luck.
Dr. Brokes classes are very laid back and easy. Attended is not taken which is nice if you can't make class. The test are much harder than any class so you must study in order to get a decent grade. Midterm and finals questions are given beforehand so you can prepare for them early.
Brokes is tough but clear and knowledgeable. 4 tests (drops lowest), midterm and final. Doesn't take effort, attendance or participation into account for grading. Her class is pretty challenging but doable if you show up and study.
Really nice teacher, gives you practice tests before the actual tests which help a lot. If you skip class you won't do well, doesn't give a lot of work but is a very hard grader. Wants everything to be exactly how she says it. 4 tests a midterm and a final. Average class, definitely wouldn't recommend but not completely awful.
Dr. Brokes is an excellent professor. She genuinely cares about her students and their understanding of the course material. This course can be tricky when taught by any professor but Dr. Brokes made the content very clear and was willing to go over it several times until each student understood. Would definitely take if you have the chance.
Dr. Brokes was a very clear and knowledgeable professor. She inspired me to take up Philosophy as a double major alongside Classics. However, despite my large effort on her papers, my communication with her outside of class, and my great amount of participation, I received an A- as opposed to an A, which I still view as unjustified.
Hardest class ever for absolutely no reason. Took her for my Freshman Seminar. Impossible assignments, she makes absolutely no sense. DO NOT TAKE, AVOID !!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The material is by far the most confusing most frustrating thing ever. I took this for my freshman seminar and regret it. Professor Brokes is very challenging and this class drained me. Destroyed my GPA and didnt learn one thing and got Cs and Ds on every paper. So much work for what should be an easy course. DO NOT TAKE
4 essays throughout the semster which she grades extremely tough. hard to get a good grade. also a midterm which she gives you the questions to in advance
Dr. Brokes is an incredible professor and is truly passionate about philosophy and its moral implications in society. She has made me love philosophy! She is a difficult and picky grader but as long as you read from the text and take notes you should be fine. She is very lecture heavy and only grades off 4 essays and a midterm and final.
I would NEVER recommend, she makes everything so complicated and only believes what she is saying is correct. The essays she makes you write are very difficult and she grades HARD. There is not much homework but your grade goes off of a limited amount of grades so work hard on all your essays cause no tests and amount two homework assignments. nope
Dr. Brokes is a very tough grader and you pretty much sacrifice your first paper in the class in order to see what she expects unless you have had her before. This class was super interesting though and I am glad I had the opportunity to take it, but unless you are able to grasp philosophy rather quickly you will not get a great grade.
Brokes is a super nice woman who knows what she's talking about. The course itself is super interesting and thought provoking, if you're into it. You're graded on 2 papers and a midterm and final, which can be tough because it's hard to know what to expect the first paper. You don't need to actually read anything because her PowerPoints cover it
Many say that PHL154 is what ruins philosophy at SJU (and they are correct!) but I cannot fault Dr. Brokes for how boring the subject material can be at times. She makes the class as interesting as she can and doesn't pile on an unreasonable amount of work; she is also very accessible and willing to give helpful feedback when you're writing essays.
Only gives 4 tests, gives you the opportunity to drop your lowest one but since she is such a hard grader, you are basically sacrificing your first tests. Also gives a midterm and final. She provides reviews but they are barely helpful because even when you write word for word what she tells you, it is still wrong. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Luvs her topics, lock up and ull be chill gng
Tests are impossible. The first one I took I was perfect on her written answer section(25 points), and then she gave me a 5/25 on the written portion. I technically got the answer right but it was not HER WORDING. Drops a quiz but I got covid and she wouldn't let me take the quiz and gave me a 0. Plethora of better options at sju than her.
I spent a full semester in her class, in my group of friends who were in her class with me. We all agreed that most of the material is her opinion and after me and a female student submitted the same answers to a assignment she got 10/10 i got a 7/10, with the same answer, clearly showing bias against me
Professor Broke is one of my favorite teachers at Saint Joe's. She makes the content understandable and gives real life examples when explaining a topic. She's kind and funny and doesn't give much homework. Every Sunday, there is a weekly online take home quiz. Because of the quizzes, we didn't have to take a final for the class.
Love her. Had clear lectures and made philosophy easy to understand. 5 in-class tests (NO final and NO midterm) if you take good notes and study then you will do really well. She cares about her students and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities
Dr.Brokes is very opinionated. Attendance is a mandatory. She writes all notes on the board & doesn't post them online. Five short tests, two papers, and online open-book quizzes. She cold calls and is judgmental if you don't understand or are incorrect. MUST READ AND TAKE NOTES. She does offer some extra credit which helps.
There is no final or midterm, with five in-class tests and weekly online quizzes. She is a harsh grader on the test, but with the two papers and extra credit, it's easy to get a B in her course. She is a nice teacher who wants to help you overall. Her grading system is just really unfair for the test.
Great professor! Just wants the best for her students and wants to encourage everyone to grow as a writer
Dr. Brokes was one of the worst teachers I have had. She is biased against her students and gives lectures based on her opinion. Be ready to sit through classes where she yells at you for “not liking her” and gives lectures about abortion for three classes straight instead of real material. “you guys think i'm brainwashing you” should not be said.
i had to drop her class because the material was very difficult, and when i approached her for help she told me that it was my fault that i didn't understand. she insisted i didn't take notes or pay attention, meanwhile, i had filled up half a notebook of notes for her class alone. DO NOT TAKE HER.
If you can avoid taking Dr. Brokes I would. Her material is very hard to understand and you have to spend way too much time looking at it then you should. She says she is willing to talk to you, but then attacks you the whole time.
Dr. Brokes is great! Definitely tough in the beginning, but if you pay attention and ask questions during class, you will be fine. She also is really helpful when going to her office hours (on zoom). 5 Tests, 2 essays, and weekly weekend quizzes. No midterm or final.
Difficult grader. Avoid taking her.
She really is not bad. She has no final, 5 short tests, 10 online quizzes, 2 short writing assignments, and extra credit. If you put in the effort, getting a B or A in this class is not difficult. All the assignments are relatively easy, and she will give some answers if you ask for help. Overall, not bad professor and good at teaching.
If you are stuck with Professor Brokes for Philosophy 154, good luck. Nobody wants to learn about philosophy at 8 am, and she makes the experience that much worse. The information that was taught in class seemed completely pointless and extremely confusing. 0/10 would not reccomend.
She's so annoying. If you have her, count how many times she says “right guys” or “do you guys get this” like no Dr. Brokes we do not get this. UGH SHES SO BORING AND if you don't word it excatly how she wants it on the quizzes, she'll give you a bad grade EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE THE RIGHT ANSWER but not how she words it.
Not very understanding, treats students like they are dumb if they ask questions, not available on office hours.
Professor Brokes mostly just lectures and keeps saying “right guys?” You must use her exact definitions WORD-FOR-WORD or you're marked wrong. Would never take again.
8am for this class was not the move so don't do it if u have a choice (I didn't). Her grading is so hard like it's impossible to get an A. if you miss one word in a definition she'll mark it wrong and I literally studied her lecture notes for essays but still got bad grades. I feel like it's impossible to write a good paragraph for her. good luck
Don't take this class if you want to be happy. Nothing gets you a good grade it's literally impossible to do good on the tests especially the essays. She genuinely takes points off without explaining why and I literally take her lectures word for word on the tests and still it's bad. This is the worst class I've ever had
This class was hard to learn from because Professor Brokes mainly talks straight through the lecture and assumes everyone is keeping up. She repeats “right guys?” but doesn't slow down unless someone raises their hand. All answers must match her definitions exactly or they're counted wrong. I wouldn't take her again.
This class was hard to follow because the professor only lectures and doesn't check if students understand unless someone speaks up. You must use her exact definitions or she marks it wrong. The grading felt very strict. I wouldn't take her again.
Not understanding to her students, isn't flexible at all for students and their time. Barely answers emails.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Do not recommend
I showed up to class only when we had a test, she is very strict w grading and unreasonable at times, but class is interesting from what I learned on youtube.
She is very lecture-heavy, and my notes were all over the place because she gets sidetracked a lot when shes teaching. During tests, you have to write most stuff very specific or she will take points off. Her slides were not helpful and were mostly filled with her own commentary, making it confusing to follow.
