She likes her big, confusing words. But I guess you can get used to her.

reads right out of the book......boring as hell
I found her to be a good teacher, however many people found her course difficult and compared to other SOC classes it was a little harder.
One word...HORRIBLE!!!
Amazing! Does a great job teaching... and does a great job at getting the ideas across to students. You will love this prof!!
i think i cried everyday after her horrible tests... she is the devil!
Her tests are hell..and she seems a little on the feminist side...also a good chance of her being a hippy when she was younger
Great Prof. You will do well in her classes.
She's fair and she knows her stuff. Stop whining and do the work.
Was nice enough. A little boring but overall good. If you know the book you will do very well.. you wouldn't even have to go to class really
Great prof. Works hard to motivate the class. Dose a great job. Two peppers to you Dr. mac. ;-)
she's a good proff. i didn't mind her at all. The tests can be hell if your don't read
very good. may not be the "easiest" prof, but who said university is supposed to be easy! her teaching metheod should be the standard for all courses at smu, that way we could eliminate poor course content, and sloppy teaching.
Her Tests are the WORST.....Take this class with someone else she sucks!
What a wonderful prof. She does make you work, but it pays off cuz you know your stuff by the time the term is over. Real nice smile too ;-)
Not clear at all, and did not explain info. well
hard to listen to...notes on the P drive...dont bother reading...tests not that hard at all...study all notes
I had this prof. a few years back, and I have to say I really enjoyed the two classes I took with her. You do have to work hard in her classes, but she is fair, clear and very helpful.
Way over my head! She needs to turn it down a notch she is way too hard to understand.
Fun,amusing, fantastic, bright, at ease, and at times is a real academic aphrodisiac. What a prof!!!
very feminist views. domineering. don't take this class with her.
Good Prof. and WILL NOT exercise power over you in a cruel and autocratic manner!
Awesome! My fav at SMU so far. Very articulate, clear, and fair. Makes you work for your mark like a professor should. Very intelligent, bringing a lot more to an otherwise dull course. Can't wait to take another course with her, made me like school again
Audrey supervised my thesis a few years back, and I came to know her fairly well. She is very patient, very helpful, and ridiculously intelligent. Audrey is not an unduly harsh marker, but those of you looking for an 'easy' grade should steer clear.
Horrible. Her test have nothing to do with lectures or the book. Its like she gets the test question from who know where. Shes a feminista! Don't take her unless you want to work hard for a C.
A very interesting person. Very classy, emphasises certain things clearly... she's kind of hot... ok if she was 20 i would nail her. She talks sideways a lot and smiles. Definitely a must see if only once.

people talk about her being a femenist as if that is a bad thing... did you fools not realize taht you took a SOCIOLOGY course??? either way, this woman knows what she is talking about and understands how to disseminate info to people who are new to the material. take a class with her and work hard.
I admitt its been 2 years since I took Critical Thinking with her and I found it kind of boring while I was taking it, but I still remember the so much from the course. She really gets in your head nad makes you look at society from a different point of view, and it sticks there!
Wonderful Prof! Very passionate about her discipline. Respectful of and open to everyone's comments and opinions (even annoying airheads who have no idea what they're talking about). I will go out of my way to take more classes with her!
extremely helpful but very hard to understand, use her office hours for clarification if you have any trouble she'll talk you through it. Not the easiest marker but I'd say fair...probably wouldn't take another class with her though
An extremely intelligent prof. She is open and enthusiastic. She sticks to the text quite well, but deviates a bit with her own opinion. She keeps your attention and encourages questioning (props to her for managing a debate with almost 300 freshmen).I hope to have another class with her!

A hard marker but a very good prof. She is interesting, and a very smart woman!
Not a bad professor, she is biast in her views especially on the subjects of feminism and her lectures are sometimes rather dry; concentrating on material that is irrelevant to the subject matter...take her if you have no other choice
I am a formal MALE student and I loved being in this prof.s classes. She was great. Those people that can’t get over the feminist theory are whiny. She is intelligent, clear and very articulate.
Very good prof. Encourages you to be involved with class. I enjoyed her class very much.
Good prof. A bit of a hard marker but does a great job with the classes.
Audrey is an aweseome prof, he knows how to teach theory and how to make it relateable to students and to everyday life. I also took a course with her on SOC of Food which was really interesting, she is a great prof. As for those feminist bashers, get over yourselfs, stop attaching profs who are trying to change **** attitudes.
I took her classes every chance I had. She is an amazing professor. Knowledgeable, fair, interesting, well spoken and helpful. Really challenged some of my beliefs and opened my mind up to a new way of thinking. I would recommend her to anyone for any class. She was one of the highlights of my university career.
Best prof I've had at SMU, hands down
Good knowledge of materials but extremely boring lectures and confusing explanations.

I had her for a few classes and though she is a hard marker, she is fair and is one of the reasons I majored in Soc. recommended
I had this prof for intro and classical theory and I think that she is magnificent. You might find the readings difficult, but she always manages to make them clear in class, always!
I had intro to soc with her and loved it. I went to class because of interest not because I had to. She's nice and always willing to explain something. She calmed me down when I thought I bombed a test and told me to just wait and see what happens. Her seminars are really helpful and let you get to know the class. Take her if you can.
Although she is a very nice and is usually available during office hours, I found her to be extremely difficult to understand. She spoke to her students as if they were fellow prof's, and it simply made learning impossible, especially for only a second year class. I don't recommend her and i have dropped my secnod semester courses with her.
great proff! very helpful and nice and very intelligent!
You have to study hard in this class. She is not easy marker on papers so do not ignore her comments regarding paper.
I never went to the lectures, didn't even crack the book open at home, and my pencil stayed sharp because it never met paper. I got a C-, and that was from guessing on the midterms and the final. Awesome x)
She knows her stuff, but I found the lectures to be incredibly boring as they came basically straight from the textbook.
Really passionate about what she teaches - but you might want to have a dictionary because she likes to use "big words". You definitely have to read for this course in order to do well. Two essays and a take home final exam.
Found her to be pretty vague and unhelpful. Nice enough lady but class became quite boring as everyday it was just the same, listening to her ramble on about some obscure thing nobody in the class really understood..
MacNevin is a nice woman, however, she teaches as if the students have an understanding of big words and various theories. Explanations were vague and hard to understand. Lectures were EXTREMELY boring! The only positive thing I have to say is the way we were marked. two tests, one art project or essay, and a take home exam.
She's a nice person and very articulate. Some of her lectures are boring, but others are really interesting. She's a hard marker, but not unfairly so. Overall a solid prof.
Boring lectures. Has been teaching for 20 odd years and it shows as most lectures are filled with 2nd wave feminist views and offensive terminology from the 70's. Readings are a MUST. Review slides for tests. Take home exams that aren't that difficult. Nice to talk to but answers questions by saying a whole lot of nothing.
most boring lectures ive ever had to endure and probably the hardest marker also
Hardest tests of my university career, terrible lecturer and does not answer any question you ask her, basically listen her rant about unimportant things to the course
Audrey is very respected and inspirational. You will learn more than you ever expected to in a class. She makes you work for the marks, but you benefit from it in the long run. If you don't work hard or hate reading, do not take this class.
She's a very nice lady. She uses a strong vocabulary and will expect you to know this vocabulary for the test. If your a hard worker you will do fine, if not I wouldn't recommend taking it.
Very enthusiastic and passionate which equate to amazing lectures. Her tests are tricky so it important to do the readings she has a wide vocabulary and it is important to note that her students are accountable for understanding any terms she uses or that are present in the text even if they are irrelevant they will likely be included on her tests.
She is really nice and is very passionate about what she teaches. I loved what I learned in the class, and I found myself actually wanting to go and listen. The only draw backs were that she is a tough grader, especially on punctuation and her directions on how she wanted you to write were often unclear! Make sure you go see her on office hours
The class was very enjoyable, but quite difficult. Professor MacNevin made the classes enjoyable, but unfortunately the tests are almost entirely based on information from the textbook, which generally isn't covered in class. She expects a bit too much for a first year class, but the seminars are helpful for getting easy points.
Dr. Macnevin is fantastic. She articulates herself well, and is extremely engaging in class. I find all of her lectures quite interesting, and I genuinely enjoy the way she teaches. She also has a unique style, and I love the way she carries herself; a very inspirational woman. Yes, she uses "big words" - but a vocab upgrade never hurt anyone!
Powerpoints every day, prof reads them off which you can do yourself. 4-5 slides each class, pretty much sums up whatever you were supposed to read from the textbook. $95 book that I don't use. The course is graded on three midterms. Two 35%, one 30%. Done on a scantron, 50 multiple choice. Bring a pencil or you'll get a 0.
SUPER nice woman. Very intelligent prof. However, do not take her for classical theory unless you want to take a huge hit to your GPA. Three multiple choice tests that unless you have a perfect grasp on the readings, your probably going to do very poorly. Multiple choice are wicked hard! and I studied, a lot.
Only graded on 3 tests and though she says the questions are based on material covered in class and the text, most of the questions are specific from the text. Openly says she tests on stuff from the text that she doesnt mention in class. Wish she would do more questions about things covered in class to reward people who attend the lectures.
Such a good prof. She is definitely passionate about what she is teaching. Also very funny and her lectures aren't dry. Her tests are quite hard, when studying I would recommend being able to use the notes and apply them to everyday problems, using examples is a good way to study.
Acknowledged when the entire class didn't do well and provided opportunities to improve grades. Is more interested in helping you learn the information rather than just trying to get through the curriculum.
Solid prof, lectures are interesting and she is excellent at connecting the topics back to our own lives. Tests are quite hard, you must read all the text book readings in order to pass... however she recognizes when the class is struggling and provides opportunities for students to make up for lost marks. I highly recommend taking this class!!
Used PowerPoints for her lectures and essentially read off the PowerPoint. Occasionally would add details but not often. She also had a habit of comepletely rewording questions that students asked her, and when she answered, it was not at all related to the question. Never even opened the book. Got stuff done during lectures, but it wasnt socio.
MacNevin is a case of people who are incredibly smart, and understand the material they teach but should never actually teach it. Her slides were odd and her lectures were all over the place. Cannot teach. Classical theory with her felt like intro to sociology again not pleased. Expect about 20% less then what you typically get.
Dr. MacNevin is a sweet lady and she connects real life to every aspect of the content she teaches. Her tests align with the textbook material. Theres 3, each worth 25%, so it counts for a lot. They arent easy tests. The seminars are easy points, go to class whenever those happen! Read to understand and you'll do well :)
Great professor, the only thing i really hated was the fact that she really takes a lot of the content from the book and sometimes the class felt more like a book club than it did a lecture, and I did not pay $600 for a book club. Very nice lady and really understanding when you miss things.
Hardest and most confusing multiple choice exams Ive ever written in my life. Its a shame students marks tend to suffer in her courses because the course content is really interesting. Wouldnt risk this as an elective if youve got a scholarship to maintain tho. Spent the most time on this course outside of class only for it to be my lowest mark
She outlines every test and makes sure that everyone in the class knows exactly whats gonna be on the test and how the questions are gonna be styled. Honestly one of the best teachers Ive had yet because most dont care enough to help make sure you understand everything.
3 large tests and absolutely no learning objectives or material layouts to help your studying. Her lectures contain 4-8 slides... that's all. you have to study the textbook-like crazy to pass this course. The tests are very difficult and FULL of only textbook material. i would not suggest taking this class. it's a waste of money and lowers GPA
Audrey is a great professor who I have had multiple courses with. She is a tough grader but that is because she expects submitted work to be at an academic level. The tests are solely based on the readings and the terminology, so a deep understanding is required there. She is very caring towards her students and a great person overall. I recommend.
Audrey was an interesting lecturer and easy to pay attention, but it was very test heavy. Only 2 midterms and a final for your grade, and all multiple choice. Multiple choice were very wordy and confusing to understand. So many questions and takes forever to read each question on the test.
Professor MacNevin only graded us based off of 3 tests. She would test you on ANYTHING from the textbook (ie even captions on pictures and percentages shown on small charts). Her tests were difficult and the M/C options were all very similar. Be prepared to take lots of notes in class as she often writes stuff on the board.
Professor MacNevin is a phenomenal professor, and person. I've had multiple in-person and online classes with her and her lectures are always insightful. If you do not do well it's because you are not putting in the time. You do not get to just read the powerpoints and pass. MacNevin is reasonable and cares about her students!
Never actually spoke to MacNevin herself, but the way she structured her online class made it unbearable. Spent the entire semester just reading from the textbook preparing for the three exams. If you get a bad grade there's no way to get your grade back up. Never listened to a lecture as she admitted that the information wouldn't even be in them.
Professor MacNevin is a great lecturer. We were graded on three tests only. You need to know the material and not just memorize facts in order to do well. There is no chance at extra credit. Follow her advice with how to study for the tests and you should do well. This course takes effort.
