She's a great instructor, very picky about your writing. U have 1 journal, 3 inclass essays, 4 out of class essays, diagnostic essay, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, don't be late either! You don't go to class, she's not the instructor 4 u. very difficult grader, but fair. U must use MLA format, no excuses accepted! u don't buy bks, she's not the prof 4 u
She only likes your opinion if it is her own!!!!!! Otherwise she thinks the world is Wrong!
Thacker is great professor. She is one of the few who will challenge you in a healthy way. I recommend her if you are serious about school... she won't cut you any slack if you aren't.
Thacker was one of the most unenthusiastic professors I've ever had. She always started the class with a tired bored look which she wore for the whole semester. She is very cold and distant. She likes you if you agree with her opinion. If you want a great teacher who actually enjoys teaching, Thacker is not for you.
10 points off for an imperfect bibliography? are you kidding me? no. this class challenges you in an unhealthy way.
The only way you'll fare well in her class is if you're already a fantastic, professional, flawless writer. She takes points off on your essays for every little mistake. Her class is painful to sit through, because you watch her pull teeth. She doesn't inspire students at all so conversation is rarely engaging. Take her only if you must.
She is challenging but if you want to pass the WPE it is an excellent class to take.
Couldn't not stand this class. She requires you to read a BUNCH of tests and has hard random pop quizzes. She is the most anal grader in the world. Gives 2 essays and a final. Good luck to anyone who has to take her. Worst class.
Couldn't not stand this class. She requires you to read a BUNCH of tests and has hard random pop quizzes. She is the most anal grader in the world. Gives 2 essays and a final. Good luck to anyone who has to take her. Save yourself.
OK, so am I the only one that thinks shes hot? I can't help it if I like older intelligent women, I mean really, freakin HOT. Thacker is a very nice lady, I got the feeling she wasn't very organized, and I despised her quizes, I felt they were full of pointless details. Other than that, it is a very intersting course, not easy, but not difficult
OK. She is an incredibly nice person, and very willing to help. Take a crash course in proofreading symbols, and buy the MLA handbook. But the texts, READ THE TEXTS, and you'll be fine. She outlines everything she wants to talk about, but lectures are tough if the class doesn't speak. She takes attendance every class. Follow the syllabus GOOD LUCK!!
Her sarcastic and bitter attitude gets in the way of her teaching and the student learning. There is too many texts covered, so the student does not gain much knowledge about anything. Class is painful to sit through. Show up--she takes roll. Tough grader--10 points off for minor/nonexistent errors in Works Cited. No Go.
Most of the comments here are nonsense. Yes, Dr. Thacker does expect students to read the assigned texts. Yes, she does take attendance, so if you want a class where some dolt will hand you an A for not learning anything, she is not the professor for you. She is, however, incredibly articulate, knowledgeable, and absolutely adorable.
I honestly did not learn much and have wasted a semester. All she does is throw out a question and let the students ramble on. She is not clear with her material.
Dr. Thacker is great! She's extremely clear on what she expects and what is required for students to earn an A. She respects her students and grades fairly. Dr. Thacker's class is not DIFFICULT, but it is a lot of work. You will, without a doubt, become a better writer after taking any class with her. She is challenging, but in a beneficial way!
This is my 2nd semester with Dr. Thacker. Her courses are demanding, but fair. She assigns 6 novels, two research papers, easy reading quizzes, easy journals, and an open book essay final. She keeps her office hours, responds to emails, and provides copious notes on your work. I wish all the teachers at CSUN were as competent.
She hates you when you don't agree with her. My advice, just nod your head and smile at her like she's right.
She isn't easy, but she is effective. Don't take her if you are lazy (like many of the reviewers before me), but take her if you are serious about your education and want to be become a better writer. Sure, she is a little cold - but this isn't romper room folks.
This was a difficult class, but one that ultimately taught me a great deal. At the time, when she taught at LAPC, back in 1995, she was a sharp editor and excellent motivator for students who responded to lackluster grades with increased effort. The increased effort on my part was rewarded with higher grades. She will make you better if you work.
She is a really good teacher! Very clear and you know exactly what is expected of you. Had 5 books to read, and the rest of class was discussionsand group discussions, plus 2 papers.(she is open to opinions, comments and questions) Read the books, attendance is MANDATORY, and do the 2 essays (no late work allowed) and you'll do great! I RECOMMEND.
Condescending in remarks. Most material we talk about in class rarely directly relates to text. Asks questions then makes most of the student's answers not a good enough assessment to her standards. The very reason why nobody wants to speak in class (for fear of her harsh judgments). No explanation to how essays are graded.
If you have problems with punctuality, do not take her. If you occasionally miss a class, do not take her. If you do not reading entire novels over a weekend, do not take her. If you are not confident in your writing skills, do not take her. if you are not serious about your education, do not take her. She is tough.
She is an excellent professor, not an easy A, however, ones writing improves exponentially. She expects you to read the texts, be there on time, and to only be absent twice. She assigns two papers, and they must be grammatically correct, if not she deducts points. Don't be afraid to raise your hand and give your opinion.
I found this professor to be very condescending. She talks to her students like they're dumb and I don't appreciate that. I didn't enjoy our class discussion either. Everyone had really dumb points and she ran with it. She took 8 points off my essay for not adding a source. She's just rude. Wasnt the worst class I've taken but I wouldnt do it again
She can be a very moody teacher at times if you dont do what she asks of you as a student. She can give attitude sometimes. So do what she asks. This class is really easy all the stories are great and she has a great understanding of all the concepts of the stories. Expect quizzes and 2 essays and the final. Easy class to pass
This professor is just plain rude. She is a harsh grader therefore it is crucial you get ahold of the texts somehow!! Strongly recommend taking this class with another professor. Entered the class looking forward to it, left the class hating it.
There are 5 contemporary novels, 2 papers, a final, & group discussions. She expects perfect MLA format, grammar, & punctuation... It is a 300 level English class, though, so knowledge of those things should be expected. She is a tough grader, & she provides helpful criticism so you become a better student. The subject matter is very interesting.
Overall a bad teacher and pretty bad human being. She is unclear and unsupportive. Her lectures are dull and tedious and her feedback is nonexistent. Avoid at all costs. She is overly opinionated and rejects ideals that oppose her own. She will not help you if you email her. It seems as if she couldn't care less about her students.
Hands down the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. She is condescending, irritable and unclear. Her criticisms did nothing to better my writing and her critiques were trite at best. As a disclaimer, I did well in her class. This is not a lamentation over a poor grade. She is simply an awful teacher and should consider resigning as an educator.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. If you are having trouble with writing do not expect for her to help you. She is very harsh when it comes to communicating with students. The worst professor I have ever had in all my 4 years of college.
SHE SHOULD NOT BE A TEACHER. Toughest grader and extremely rude. Every student in her class is taking it as an elective and she grades like we have phd's in english. Wouldn't recommend this class if you remotely like literature, because you will hate it by the end of the semester. Also, if you're 1 minute late you're absent. RIP good GPA
Worst teacher I've ever had. Condescending, rude, and pretentious- lectures only skim the surface of material, she offers no insight whatsoever, and everyday we spend half the class period talking in groups. Avoid
Belongs in high school. Puts down students if they're late; she'll look up your major and if her class isn't relevant to it, takes it out on your grade. I didn't learn anything in her class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! Doesn't look at quality; only formatting and loves to take off points for tiny mistakes. Prides herself on taking pts off papers.
Worst class I have ever taken. By the end of the semester you will end up hating anything that has to do w/ lit. Proff is condescending & judges you if you do not agree w/ her opinion. Lectures are incredibly dull & boring, has a very tedious way of teaching, expects students to write like they have eng phd's. Unreasonable grader & is obsessed w mla
Yes her class is hard, but in the end it is super helpful. She isnt rude, she is constructive, but if you ask a stupid question, ya, shocker, you might get a snippy answer. Just work. She is very clear on what she wants, just do what she wants and you will pass. She is willing to help as long as you approach her immediately. She is great & a genius
3 projects in groups creating a presentation and essay. 3 individual essays and a portfolio. She takes roll 2 min before class starts, so get to class early or she will mark you absent and take points off. Topics for essays are vague and kinda meaningless. It's hard to read her writing. Gives extra credit a certain day and time.
Proff Thacker is amazing. She isn't for the weak of heart though. I found that if you show her that you are interested (even if you're not) she will be more helpful to you because after all, why should she be helpful to the people that sleep or just go on their phones in class and expect an A. You need to work hard for the grade you want.
Welcome to college. She expects yo to write like an actual educated person. If you aren't willing to put in the effort, don't take the damn class,
I had an essay due in Thacker's class and was on time to this class and turned it in to her, however it was not stapled so I went to get it stapled and she did not count my essay for credit even though it was on time. She is not understanding and is incredibly difficult. Would not take her again, ever.
Very rude and condescending. She seems bitter and never smiles. The way she responds to questions is so rude. I'm all for toughness but there's a difference between that and an actually rude and disrespectful person. She always brings up the private universities she graduated from like it matters to us. Wouldn't take this class again!!
Tough grader when it comes to essays. Gives points away for free on quizzes.
She has students get in group discussions for 2/3 of class time so she can surf the web. Went to office hours early & she would only give feedback on 1st paragraph & that was it. I felt like I was in a punitive environment rather than an atmosphere of fostering growth/full potential in writing about and analyzing texts.
Professor Thacker was a tough grader but you have to keep in mind that this is college and not high school anymore. Her class consisted of 3 projects they were all group projects and 3 essays. This class was a bit tough but its manageable just put the time in.
A real gem of an instructor! Zero-cost class, plenty of available office hours, quick email replies, a plethora of extra credit opportunities, & extensive feedback on graded material -- all amazing qualities of a course taught by an professor that really cares about their students' success! A very memorable course, and an even more memorable prof!
It was an easy class because she doesnt do anything. 25% of class is talking about the book and the rest is group discussions all while she is on her laptop. All the books were free online so that was great but she will come hard on you for not doing things exactly what she wants. Only reason I passed was all the extra credit. Horrible professor.
a prof shouldnt bring your grade down by 10% bc you were absent 1 time? thats not even something to be graded on. grades heavy on essays & her prompts r bland/boring. makes u use sources from the library & that way you cant write your own paper the way u want. also participate in class or ur grade will drop. do the extra credit. dont take her.
Prof. Thacker is great and nice! All texts were online. She gives pop quizzes that reference multiple books at a time. Theres tons of extra credit in this class. We had two six-page essays and a final essay of any length. We also wrote short journals; attendance and participation are graded. She often has us do classwork in pairs. Recommended!
a very good professor gives feedback on everything you do in class, although if you have nothing to do in life than read 3 books within a month period and do 2 discussion posts 350 words each every week along with the 5-page essay she assigns, go right ahead! Useless class, you don't learn anything then about Jews, the holocaust. BORING
Professor Thacker had some quirks throughout the semester that I found difficult to get around such as assuming everyone with a laptop didn't pay attention, but she was overall a good instructor. I wouldn't take her again if I could avoid it, but that's not to say she was a bad instructor by any means. With the quarantine, she was very resourceful!
Professor Thacker is a very caring professor, but you cannot afford to slack off in this class. Lots of books to read. A LOT. That being said, she gives you detailed feedback on all of your work. She will also wreck the hell out of your essays! I am not sure if she will offer extra credit anymore, but it definitely saved my grade this semester.
Be Responsible and do the work. You give your classmates feedback on their work which counts towards your participation credits.
She really sets you up for greatness. You gotta read about 4 books during the semester and have weekly writing/discussion activities, but every assignment helps you understand the concepts and prepares you for the essays. She sets up the course so it's very straight forward and easy to follow online. She's so sweet, and made me a better writer!
Nice teacher. Assigns 'fakebook' assignments regularly in a university level class for no reason and then expects you to devote hours of time to it. Wouldn't take again.
She really only teaches about Anne Frank. She is a tough grader and very strict about deadlines and specifics about assignments. If you follow the prompt exactly for an assignment you will get a C or lower. Essays require you to go to the LRC, office hours, and submit an outline and pre write, among many other things in the instructions.
tons of writing which I expected but her prompts are horrible! she's super vague and isn't clear with what she's looking for even if you ask her. all the required literature was social issue based and required a similar opinion to hers. honestly 2/10.
If you want a passive aggressive/rude professor go for it and take her class. The thing that gets me is the Fakebook assignments and the way she grades those essays. we dont have PHds and I have a feeling some people probably won't like literature afterwards. Unless you like tough grading and a lot of reading and tiresome assignments take it
You will read 4-5 novels. Weekly discussions on Canvas with responses. 1 group project/presentation. 2 essays. No midterm or final exams. You need to show up to class and participate and take advantage of the multitude of extra credit offered. Surprised to see ratings claiming she is anything other than kind, helpful, and cool. I'm taking her again
I'm a student-in-progress for Professor Thacker, so my opinion may change with time, but I believe that given the first few weeks I've had I heed a very strong warning for enrolling in her class. She grades irrationally hard, is super picky in her expectations, but can't even organize canvas weekly modules efficiently or put in practical due dates.
-doesnt answer emails -grades late -tough grader -answered questions (in person) with attitude -only reason my grade is high is bc i did sm extra credit -selective in who to help -workload is manageable with effort, but having a professor provide answers to questions is unacceptable
Personally, I really liked her. But the way she ran class wasnt the best. Met 1x week, took time w emails, took time grading, picky w essay outlines. LOTS of extra credit! Genuinely so sweet & knowledgable about subject. Group projects help w essays--you get to pick which one. Weekly discussion posts. Always gives feedback. Optional final for us.
Read text every 2-3 weeks, Canvas discussion and responses biweekly, one group presentation on one of the texts, in-class discussions, participation matters, LOTS of extra credit, two essays, 6-8 pages each, and an optional final exam. No midterm. Tough grader, but fair.
Took Professor Thacker HUM101 course and it was easy! Your final will be a group project! There are weekly discussions on canvas which are also easy just do the readings and you should be good! She also provides opportunities for extra credit so take advantage! Also you will have some essays to do throughout the semester!
Professor Thacker is a well respected member of the education department. She is very professional with her work, but be ready to work hard for her class. She is a tough grader and expects you to put your best into your work, but she will support you all the way through it. Lecture heavy, be ready!
Dr.Thacker lets student presentations go on far too long, nitpicks every little detail of your essays, and ignores MLA for her own idea of it. She gets upset if you email her too soon with a question about the class. I appreciated the hyflex option but if you want an A in this class, you must do a majority of the extra credit.
Professor Thacker's class was very hard for me. She is very nit-picky about essays and even when you follow MLA she will still nick you. She has you do group presentations and they take way too long and with a Flex class it's important to be tech savvy which she is not. She was also very rude to a couple of students asking genuine questions.
Dr. Thacker is a very skilled and respected professor. With that being said, her classes are unbearable to sit through. Entire sessions are led by lengthy student presentations with little-to-no lecturing. Her feedback is helpful, however she is condescending to an extent that makes you hesitate to reach out. I have no takeaways from this class.
Horrible communicator; will not read emails for weeks. I learned absolutely nothing from this woman. Leaves vague and unhelpful feedback on essays. Expects you to know how to do everything. Lectures are absolutely worthless and boring, yet attendance is mandatory. Please do yourself a favor and chose another professor, literally ANYONE else.
Just know that she is very strict on her grading and she can come off as condescending. Since I took a hybrid course, she put us in breakout rooms a lot. Make sure you come prepared having read the book of the week. She has a lot of requirements for essays such as going to the LRC or visiting her at least once during the semester.
Participation is super important, lots of reading, discussion posts and responses, 1 group project. Not a tough grader I'd you put the effort in and make sure to participate even a little during lectures
Super strict and if your assignments don't fit the perfect idea she has laid out, you fail. Unreasonable terms to align with and little to no actual feedback other than being condescending to students. Even if you do the readings, pay close attention, and take thorough notes, it is simply not enough. Mainly students presenting and her not teaching
Professor Thacker is a harsh grader when it comes to writing papers in her class. If your writing style does not fit her writing style, get ready to lose points. It is either her way or the highway. It is not a lot of work, but you have to turn in quality work to pass her class.
Gives no feedback mainly just disrespectful comments both in person and online. Stated "not caring if students fail", giving no hope. Honestly discouraging especially if you've just started college. Choose a different professor if possible.
Do yourself a favor and take literally any other professor. She doesn't respond to emails. She want's everything done her way and really takes over your writing process. Class is mandatory and the bulk of it is 8 weeks worth of student led presentations that take up the entire class time and don't teach you anything. She doesn't teach anything.
Do NOT take this professor. She has a very childish picky way of grading, which means she will take points off of assignments just because she feels like it. Has a mandatory office hours and other unnecessary aspects of the course that she uses instead of real teaching and feedback. Take ANYONE else.
WORST professor ever! She is very picky and will remove a lot of points from your assignments just minor mistakes! Not accessible out of class and does not respond to ANY emails. You are most likely an amazing writer, so don't think your writing is bad because of the comments she leaves on your essays. She hates to see students thriving!
Professor Thacker is very nice and I enjoyed being in her class, I just hated the onslaught of papers and "participation assignments" and that sometimes it felt like she was not correcting my work, but criticizing my personality? Do all of the extra credit, be as precise as possible in assignments, and show up. Maybe change your major. :/
I know a lot of people don't like Professor Thacker, but I think it's just because she has a particular style of writing that she expects you to abide by. She lays it out really early in class, so as long as you follow her rules to a T, you'll be okay. I would take her again, but maybe when I have less classes since it's a lot of detailed work.
I felt like I learned a few things but dang, she was definitely a tough grader. I agree with someone else's review that she's very specific on how she wants you to write, a lot of detail for it, took longer to write. Her prompts-vague, the readings-not too heavy. 2 passes for missing two days. Shes nice, willing to help. Her essays were tough.
She is possibly the worst professor I have ever taken at CSUN. She accuses students of using AI and doesn't care to speak with the student about it. If you miss one assignment or don't receive full point your grade will drop dramatically. Do the extra credit because she WILL ruin your grade. If you have the option to take another professor DO IT!
If you are pregnant or somehow protected by title IX or some other disability do not take this professor. She will seem like she's nice but she isn't very understanding when it comes to these types of issues. Her main concern is that you show up to her class and if you cant she will treat you very poorly and take it out on your grades. Uninspiring.
useless class. 100% of it was jst her talking. HATES WHEN U USE UR DEVICES! i was doing smth for another class since her lectures were making me sleep. gave me a rude as look for a total of 5 mins just waiting for me to turn my laptop off. i even looked back at her and had a staring contest w her for a min. rolled her eyes and resumed teaching.
Has zero respect for her students, and will openly belittle them to their faces. An embarrassment of the English department. Class has little to no substance, nothing worth making attendance mandatory. Loves to intimidate students. Horrible grader, and leaves vague feedback. Never replies to emails. Made me hate writing.
Accused me of using AI for my essays and didn't respond to my email when I sent her evidence of my own work, even though she said she was always open to receiving emails. Didn't bother to listen to my defense. Her class itself wasn't too hard, but doesn't seem like she really wants students to succeed.
Horrible grader -- vague in feedback. Belittles her students in front of others, also has her favorites. Class has barely any substance. 1 mandatory attendance for group presentation. She took off points for my entire group all bc one of my group members made the font on their slides so small (she should have just taken points off for them).
Indeed a difficult class at the beginning. That's because I needed to LEARN. Once I did that, I got the A. And I did learn how to write a paper. She is SMART. As a human I'd say top tier and honest, but as a professor she's tough. Very insightful conversations. Group project wasn't hard. It was the papers to be wary of. Made me feel bad once.
If you're taking this class for a GE, please take any other class. Thacker is a harsh grader and if an assignment doesn't include everything like a checklist, you're getting docked points. The class is just a bunch of random modules thrown together and clearly nobody in the class wants to be there. AVOID.
Be warned—theres an active report file against her because of all the prejudice, attitude, and lack of professionally she gives students. She's so prejudiced & not understanding of students. Doesn't communicate at all & will leave your emails on read. Believes students are always using AI when not. You'll learn those who enjoy her are simply lucky.
Class assignment was mostly easy, consisted of discussion boards and analysis of certain topics discussed in class. But super boring teacher, just mostly talked all class, grading didn't make sense and some comments weren't clear and she would not elaborate. Allows 2 absences after takes 10 points extra credit. Would not recommend.
