Absolutely terrible. No way other way to describe it. Excessive work with little guidance and clarity. Do no take this class!!!!!!!!!!! Please listen to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Yap is a brand new prof, and sadly its pretty obvious. First of all the text is complicated and difficult to understand - and she does not post her notes. She is not particularily helpful . . . for an intro level class it was way more difficult than expected. She does not have control in the classroom and students don't repect her. Dont Take
Material was relatively straighforward. Thorough reading of text is sufficient as her lectures are uncannily boring. Fair midterm/final but assignments were confusing at times and she is not overly helpful. Interesting class but hope for a different prof.
boring powerpoints, bad jokes, and weekly assignments. not all too fun, but really not that bad, nor is the course content, homework, and exams too difficult.
Dr. Yap is what professors should be! she is always helpful in her office, and reasonable in her demands. If you put the effort forth you cannot go wrong... students these days are just lazy her assignments are not easy, but why else do people got to university? If you want to LEARN logic, this is the class for you!
Dr Yap's class is difficult. Dr Yap is a new prof and sometimes lacks the confidence, experience or clarity of other profs. BUT... She will go to great lengths to help you, and knows what she is talking about. Logic is hard and she is an expert. If you want to challenge yourself and actually learn something, she is a great prof.
Dr. Ninja! A great teacher who's super helpful. Biking and bunnies are some of her favourite things. Hw assigments aren't easy, but take her 201 class and you'll be able to pull off at least a B+ no prob in her 203. She's goofy, relaxed, and she laughs at students who eat applesauce. It's not so logical to do logic @ 8:30am BUuT it's a merry class.
One of the easier classes I have taken. She responds quickly to e-mails and is generally quite helpful when approached outside fo class. Her notes are fantastic, and she posts them on the internet, which really eliminated the need to wake up in time for her class, which I certainly appreciated. I'm definitely taking more classes with her.
Fantastic prof. Explained everything clearly, and posted notes online. Quick to respond to emails and very helpful. Online homework assignments are helpful (and very easy marks). Got an A+ without extreme effort.
very interested in topics. Life is logic.
Dr. Yap is an amazing prof, and one of a kind in being able to make logic fun (for the most part). Despite her best efforts, the material she teaches is difficult. Though this may turn some students off, those with the mental fortitute to persist will find her classes more rewarding than the other mindless dribble offered within the department.
Unorganized, she speeds through the text like crazy and when you ask her a question she's scribble it faster and messier than before. Going to office hours, all she does is make you read the text - which is what I had problems with in the first place...AVOID
(taken: Kant + phil of math) Dr. Yap is one of the most accomplished and attractive people that I've ever met. While I admire her highly for her knowledge and enthusiasm, I find her teaching style very difficult to grasp. If you can follow her then you're in for a treat, but you might want to register for a backup if you can...
Great, super helpful, wants you to succeed. Her enthusiasm for otherwise dry subject matter is infectious.
Yap is a great proff. She tends to go through her notes quickly but they are posted on blackboard. Super Easy material just read over her notes and you'll get an A+
Dr. Yap is a fantastic professor. She provides clear concise lectures, well designed homework assignments, and very fair marking and exam styles. The class moves forward at a good pace, and there is always time for questions. She engages the class in what some may find a bland topic. I highly recommend taking one of her classes. :)
She's a good junior prof, but she's still rough around the edges. She ums and ahs her way through lectures -- a major distraction that she should repair with a course in public speaking. She gives fair reign to questions and class discussion. Visit her during office hours; her intellectual horizon is broader than her research might suggest.
An excellent professor. Eager to help students and even more eager to get students interested in the subject matter. The trouble is she teaches courses many students find difficult. She lectures well, much clearer than the text.
Such a good proffesor! She made some pretty dry material really interesting, which is not easy to do. Always so nice and wants you to do well. So approachable and if you ask a question answers it in great detail. Rarely get bored in class.
Lecture content is dull, but notes are posted so class attendance is not mandatory. She uses "ums" a lot, but other than that, she is helpful outside of class and wants students to succeed. Easy A if you do the assignments, ask for help when you need it, and practice doing questions. Tests and finals follow the same format and are easy marks.
Great Prof that wants you to do well in this course! I highly recommend her.
She gives you everything you need to know in the course notes, rather than having to spend 120$ on the textbook, which is nice. A very clear teacher dealing with a fairly abstract and boring subject. Gives lots of time to students out of class too; organized study sessions before each homework assignment that were very helpful.
She is a bit timid but also is helpful (she answers her emails regularly and does lots of examples before midterms and exams). Her notes are clear enough that you almost dont need the txtbk. I recommend it though, for practice for the exams and for clarification if needed. This course was easy if you did the work.
Unhelpful and unclear with questions in class. Hard marker and exams are surprisingly challenging. Take Klatt instead, way better.
Audrey Yap is a lazy prof. She does not respond to emails on time if at all. However, she is chill. Her assignments are easy. explanations are mediocre.
She is a good teacher, approachable, and clear with her explanations of concepts. You don't need to buy the text (power of critical thinking) her notes are plenty. She moves slow with the concepts sometimes but it's still a good class. Homework and midterms content are done well and graded fairly
This is an easy A course. As long as you do your homework assignments and understand them, you will do fine. She provides class notes which are clear and straight forward. No surprise questions on homework, mid terms and final, she tells you almost exactly what to study.
not good at answering questions, class shouda been straightforward but it was both a bore and chore. save your time and money for something (or someone else)
Provided that the material was difficult, she did an admirable job of conveying it clearly. Very approachable.
I took this class thinking it would be quite straightforward, however it was surprisingly tricky during some units and exams especially. Ended up with an ok mark but I couldn't recommend it. Prof isn't the best person to talk to.
She is enthusiastic about what she teaches, excellent with replying to email and working moodle, very kind and approachable, and her notes are great ( no need to buy the text). It is well worth going to her office hours if you need help. She sincerely just wants you to understand and do well!
She is very good in terms of examples related to work you are doing. Midterms and final are easy, if you study. Definitely a class that requires the work; not just an elective you can take and expect to get an A without studying
The beginning of this class seemed pretty easy. BE WARNED. Formal proofs were the majority of the class, if I had prior knowledge I would have never taken this class! Audrey goes extremely fast during lectures and is very hard to follow. Her office hours are crowded with students and I would never get the time I needed with her.
She is a really good prof. She makes everything straightford in her notes and the exams are easy if you go throught the notes before the exams and do all the homeworks. It's easy to get an A in this course!
DO NOT TAKE PHIL 201 WITH HER! She is very unhelpful and is unclear. Her tests are nothing like the homework - I was getting 80% on the homework and would fail the midterms. Terrible prof. Definitely do not recommend her...
Loved her! Take home final, and weekly homework assignments which totally prepares you for the 4 unit tests. Makes really awkward jokes that end up being funny. Highly recommend! Super easy to get an A.
Yap is unbelievably clear in her instruction and one of the nicest profs ever. Complainers didn't do the (minimal) homework - guaranteed. Exams just like the homework and homework just like the note examples. I've never given a prof all 5s before - Yap deserves it. As soon as you don't understand something stop and figure it out. NOT LSAT PREP.
Super nice lady! Really wants you to do well! Only a couple of the assignments were tricky. Midterms really easy, final was kind of hard but pretty sure she scales it. Good prof take the class if you want a GPA boost.
Audrey Yap is phenomenal! Super engaging and passionate and really wants her students to do well. She gives fantastic examples and explains concepts remarkably well. If you go to class and listen to what she has to say, you'll do well. Would definitely take a class with Audrey again!
Straightforward with what you need to know, lectures were interesting, easy to do well in PHIL201. She's a very kind teacher too.
Would recommend this professor. Lectures were kind of boring, but she made the material very easy to understand with lots of in depth examples. Tests were easy, but the grading was some times questionable, especially if her T.A. marked them. Overall, if you need to take a PHIL course, she would be a good choice of professor.
Everything is ridiculously easy. You don't even need to go to classes to do well in the exams.
Professor Yap provides great notes and gives extremely fair assessments. She articulates the material very clearly and lets you know exactly what she expects you to be able to do with it. If you attend and pay attention it is possible to do very well. I'll be taking another course with her next semester and look forward to it.
Pretty good class overall. Not many people go to class because she posted all of her notes online (they're very good). Tests pretty much like the homework and notes. The only thing that wasn't pretty straight forward was the final, it was harder than the tests considerably. Overall, pretty good class to get a good mark in.
Dr Yap is hands down my favourite prof! She will take the time to help you if you need it even outside of her office hours. She genuinely wants you to do well in the course. She is very good at explaining harder concepts and also very patient and always has the class engaged. Homework is extremely helpful and she gives part marks on tests! 10/10
Her class was very easy to follow and understand. Saved my GPA!
This is a easy course as elective, but you need to finish the weekly homework and understand the course material clearly. If not, Dr. Yap is there for you. Really helpful in office hour. Exam is fair.
Brilliant prof, if you keep up with the homework the course will be easy
Dr. Yap is one of those professors who you can ask any question about the topic, no matter how simple, and she will treat it as a serious question. She also makes sure to explain why you have to do things the way they are done. Makes the topic make sense.
Audrey is everything needed in a professor and nothing you don't want.
LOVED this course. you 100% need to do the homework each week but isnt that hard as long as you attend lecture. The course can be challenging but just keep up with everything and go to office hours for help and it should be a piece of cake. Audrey is great and wonderful.
Awful class, worst choice this term, so confused.
4th Year: Attempted to branch out and instead dropped(the only time). Audrey says little in lectures, reiterating the same point to take up the class. Her assignments are regurgitations of the textbook(specifically noted that there is no critical thinking) and feedback is vague and flimsy. Made every effort to improve; got worse marks.
Audrey is one of my favourite profs at UVic. She's passionate about the things she teaches, and she's always around the department for help. Her readings covered a wide range of topics, and the subject matter can be taken with me into the rest of life. Her participation marks are from responses, so even if you miss class you can still get credits.
One of the few profs who is able to hold interesting lectures simply by talking. You can tell she puts effort into finding relevant readings and is able to explain things clearly. Her humor in lectures was great and she made sure to return emails and assignments in a timely matter which I respect. Would take another course with her for fun.
This class could be taught very well and clearly, but is not. The material itself is not hard to understand- unfortunately she overcomplicates it with her rambling answers to students questions and overall poor explanations of topics. At least you can get 100% on all the homework to make up for the exams, if you can teach yourself the concepts.
Very interesting material made even more intriguing by Dr Yap. She is fun, caring and respectful. If you keep up with the weekly homework and ask questions you will be fine. I would definitely recommend this course especially accompanied with her teaching style.
This isn't philosophy. It's activism indoctrination. Maybe you want that, good luck to you. Yap is a social justice warrior, if you aren't prepared to hold her beliefs she will let her dogma affect her marking - your grade! - she is marginal at withholding her politic from lectures but it reflects in the marking She is a good logician though
I am not a philosophy student but 239 was a great experience. Audrey is super intelligent, engages with her students during lectures (which are easy to follow) and is a genuine gem of a professor. I learned a ton about social issues through a philosophical lens - would definitely recommend this prof/class, to anyone interested, phil student or not!
Could post lecture notes online as often in class she gets off topic and we dont cover full content. Besides this, great prof, fun and caring! Interesting and keeps heavy subjects light. Easy A asking as you pay attention.
Not a phil major but one of the best courses/profs I've ever taken. Audrey gives AMAZING lectures and the course is pretty straightforward as long as you go to class and at least look over the readings. Marking is really fair. Her lectures are super thoughtful and she clearly knows what she's talking about. She's also hilarious! Take this class!
This was a brutal class. The math prereqs seem to be more relevant than Phil 203. The textbook is hard understand. Audrey does an amazing job of keeping spirits up, and encouraging you to ask questions until you understand it. Weekly assignments. would spend roughly 5 hours a week in office hours with Audrey, in order to do assignment.
Audrey is great. Kant sucks, and she knows that, so she gave us a real "We're all in this together" attitude when approaching the dense readings. Few profs have better doggos!
Best prof ever. Course contents are organized with a coherent structure, which helps build up your logic knowledge and skills step by step, so skipping classes is not a good idea even though she's super lenient about attendance. Reasonable workload. Super nice and understanding, has the cutest doggos in the world. I would take any course with her.
After taking *many* courses with Audrey, I can honestly say UVic is beyond lucky to have her. PHIL 370 is not an easy course, but Audrey thoroughly cares about her students doing well and gives all the opportunities in the world to get extra help, get an extension, and even resubmit parts of the tests. I would recommend uvic logic courses to anyone
She is the furthest from ur typical "boomer prof". Patient caring and has two (dog) TAs present during her online lectures!
In my online class with Audrey she was great. Marking was 90% based on tests and 10% on easy participation grades. The course material was trivial imo, but I'm a math student and I've studied this before. If you're not familiar with the content, Audrey broke things down into digestible pieces, replied to emails quickly, and made the tests very easy
Though this class was quite challenging, she was super accessible and accomodating outside of class (and on discord!) for extra help and seems like a genuinely great person. I really enjoyed how she formatted this class, and can't imagine it being any better in person :) Would recommend!
I have never felt more frustrated at a course. She posts weekly 20 minutes worth of recorded lectures that barely cover the topic, or the questions she posts. You're paying to literally teach yourself everything. There were tutorials that were not included in the course registration so be careful of class conflicts, she does respond to e-mails.
Despite my lazy arse not getting an A, I am confident that anybody who spent 2-3 hours on this course a week would have gotten an A+ at the bare minimum. Professor Yap keeps things as simple as possible considering the course content, and is accessible for extra help and conversation about philosophy.
Audrey is wonderful but unfortunately her online class was not. Her lectures were ridiculously short and you end up teaching yourself the course. She really does not explain the concepts in depth enough. Beware of time conflictions, the tutorial times are not posted. A strong math background seems like it would be very helpful.
Online lectures were way too short. Her explanation of concepts was awful, gave you the barebones explanation then expected you to figure it out yourself. Don't take this if it's online.
Prof. Yap herself is a wonderful person, and as a professor she was pretty good, however PHIL 203 itself as a class was AWFUL for me. Prof. Yap had lots of extra help hours, & she was very responsive w/ emails, but even WITH all of her extra help I still couldn't pass this class. LOTS of difficult assignments, participation for marks, hard textbook
Really disappointed in how this course was delivered. Felt like she put very minimal effort into actually teaching the course. Absolutely avoid this course if it's online, I've never been more frustrated with a course and professor than with this one
This course was designed in a way that with enough effort it was pretty easy to do well. Definitely a learning curve in learning natural deduction but not hard with enough practice. I'd heavily recommend going to tutorials if stuck on problems as it helped me a lot. Don't stress if textbook seems very theoretical, lectures clear up complex material
Took this course as an elective and was the worst decision I've made in a while. Very frustrating material and the amount of effort put into the lectures by Audrey just was not appropriate
She is so sweet and genuine. At times funny and will brighten up your day. Your work load was swell. Great slides. She also brought her dog once. I hope she sees this, she deserves it.
She is the only professor in the Phil department that engages in pointless class activities. She lacks knowledge of what she is doing. Do not enrol in Kant or any 300-level courses with her. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to clearly explain anything. She ultimately bases her marking on whether or not she likes you.
WORK WITH A GROUP. MEET PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASS, WORK TOGETHER, MAKE GROUP CHATS. This course has 4 units, and was super simple until the 2nd unit. Natural deduction is extremely difficult, but Audrey is extremely kind. I do not recommend this course at all, you are better off taking PHIL 201 if you want to save yourself stress.
Despite the condescending encouragement filled with "you can do it!", PHIL203 is a great class to participate in, and Audrey is a very good prof. No matter how challenging it was at times, the content just made sense (usually). I definitely recommend finding a good group of friends to work with and always make sure to ask questions!
Phil 203 was a particularly challenging class, the textbook is useless, and you feel like you're losing mind by the 2nd unit! That being said Audrey really helped make 203 much easier, always there with the constant advice of "You can do it" which while condescending did give myself more confidence. Overall, the: the GOAT of Phil!
LOVED AUDREY, HATED 203. JUST TAKE 201! Don't make things harder for yourself then they need to be! If you do take 203, FIND A GROUP TO WORK WITH. Audrey was hilarious and always tried to make things humorous. Recorded lectures and zoom meets live with the irl class. Can't blame her for lacklustre lectures cause you really just have to practice
Audrey's a genuinely great human who brings her best to work everyday. However, the content of this course is super annoying. You have to be actively engaged and practicing some really finicky ideas that in theory are incredibly simple, but in practice are incredibly hard. ABSOLUTELY need to find a group to work and think through this course with.
PHIL 290, philosophy of love. Audrey Yap is a kind and passionate prof, however, the class was basically just her interests. It was hard to say your own opinions. She marked exceedingly hard, even when I went to office hours and got her help (many times), I still did not do nearing as well as I thought. A fun elective turned into my worst mark.
The professor, although very nice, does not teach anything in class, but rather rambles on about things that are irrelevant to the class. Everything taught was common sense and repeated several times, making each class boring and difficult to sit through. Considering the lack of relevant information taught, the professor marked relatively hard.
Audrey is a helpful, kind, and knowledgeable instructor. I found the format of the course beneficial, two days a week are usually lectures/examples while Fridays are work blocks. The material is formal logic, so focusing on practicing the skills is more way helpful than reading. Trying to read about formal logic actually makes me want to cry.
I think PHIL203 is one of those courses where the comp sci and math students will generally do very well, and students less inclined towards those disciplines generally have a harder time. If you fall into this later group, but still need this course, I highly recommend Audrey—she cares about her students' success and is an excellent resource.
This course is difficult for those that don't have a math brain, however I actually really enjoyed Audrey as a teacher. She is very kind, and provides lots of resources for her students to succeed. She has a very relaxed teaching style, and all the tests were online, take home, and you have 3 days to work on them.
Will make you feel stupid
Dr. Yap gives very engaging lectures, and is generally an all round good professor :)
Only one lecture worth of content a week—the other two are work blocks. I did not take math after grade 11 and this course was the highest grade I have gotten in university. Plenty of oppurtunities to get help if you're struggling and Audrey is super nice. The content can seem intimidating at first but once you learn the rules its fine.
yap yap yap name says it all
She does go down the occasional rabbit hole of yapping (as the name suggests) about something random for 20 minutes, but still, I found most of the lectures to be relatively engaging.
Popular professor but I don't get it. No emotional depth, very self-centred, and her “radical” politics seem pretty performative to me. Loves to quote Black feminist scholars, and talk about abolition, but I have seen with my own eyes her being both racist (microaggressions), neutral in the face of injustice and weaponizing abolitionist language.
I hated this class but I loved Audrey. They were always willing to help and set up the class in a way that we would have work blocks to get help with weekly quizzes. Attendance was optional as lectures were recorded. The textbook was also optional but it was useful to have, I did the best on quizzes when I read it. Overall, Audrey was great.
