Excellent teacher; full of knowledge! Knows the importance of making history interesting to students and cares about what they learn. Makes the classes worth attending. Students will pass because the classes are enjoyable.
He is so BORING!!!!! Of course the class is eassy all you do are outlines of the chapters, read two books which are very short, and 2 short essay exams over the 2 book you read.
Very interesting!! His class is always worth coming to, very enjoyable. And is easy to get a good grade too!
quizes suck, test are essays, hes ok
He is dull and boring. But as long as you do all your outlines and 2 short eassy exams you'll pass with an A.
He's funny and cool. A lot of work..like reading and essays, but overall he's a cool professor.
He is not a good teacher!! Very BORING!!!!!!!!
This is an excellent professor. Lectures very well and as long as you study with the reviews he gives out, you'll do great.
Makes subject interesting...tests come staight from lectures...highly recommended.
While history may not be a good subject for some, Mr. Allen is very knowledgable. The best time to take his class is during the summer.
He is very BORING!!!!! The quizes are hard but the ssay are. Do not take his class. NOOOOO
You have to do the work but he is fair and very passionate about history which makes it easier to understand. I thought I would fail but got a B. Just do the work--he lectures alot so take a coke with you but all in all a good class.
cool teacher! lots of extra credit points, and also is funny, which lightens up the mood....A+!
He's awesome! He lectures alot, but he is very knowledgeable. He's funny and as long as you do the work you'll do ok. I took him for the Spring semester and Summer I. Cool professor
great teacher. he make you work very hard. it is hard to get A from him. I got A. i will take hist 1306 again with him.
GREAT PROF. He is very passionate about History. He truly loves the Radical era and the slavery times. He is a great professor and I would recommned him to anyone. His essays are hard, but he grades easy, so don't panic!
Really cool guy...he only gives three grades though: midterm, paper, and final. Lectures the whole class(very boring), but gives great review sheets for the test. I Highly Reccommend Him
I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO BE TOUGH & BORING BUT HE IS REALLY INTERESTING AND FAIR. I DIDN'T THINK HIS LECTURES WHERE BORING, THEY WHERE PRETTY FUN AND I LEARNED A LOT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. :)
This professor makes the course interesting even if you're not a history person...Would recommend over Cunningham 100%.
Fantastic teacher. If you love history, you will love Austin. Great lectures, although he digs for interaction a little too much. Two test and a major paper were the grades, which is pretty cool.
HE'S GOOD AT HISTORY! AN EASY A+
Allen has gotten harder than he used to be. He is one of the easier teachers but he is very boring. He is a young teacher but he is very unkempt.
Young teachers are usually the coolest and Mr. Allen fits the bill. He teaches class like he's telling an interesting story and his tests are easy if you come to class. Though you never have to come to class because he doesn't take roll nor does he care. You can still pass by reading over someone else's notes a few times. Hands out studyguides!
He is a god professor, does lecture alot but puts in little stories that are funny. He tries to get the class to interact which is cool. He is a fair teacher. Got an A in this class!
knows his material, but very boring and can be scatter-brained. he is stuck in a time wrap and thinks it's the 1980's. he LOVES talking about the slave days of the american south.
TERRIBLE DONT TAKE HIM
God this guy is horrible. He thinks a introductory course is like a masters in history. His tests are ridiculous and he wants you to know everything humanly possible. Avoid if you can.
This professor is very nice, gives. weekly quizzes, test study guide.Test will have 21 very short answers and 6 essay questions that require detail response. He really knows the content. Overall good class.
I took him he is very easy teacher. He give quez on every chapter if you just read the conclusion of each chapter you will be all right. Take him he is goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood.
Very good, very thorough
Easy class test were in three parts: Identification of terms or key historical figures, Map Locations, and Essays of lecture and reading material. Do read the material he makes sure u read it by testing u on it.
Prof. Allen knows his History PERIOD. You will NOT B.S. this guy in Essay's. Now, with that said, sit back and relax and pay attention to what he has to say because I learned a LOT from him. He gives you the test basically by the review sheets, and if you study them, you will do well. He does not bog you down with busy work. 1st class Professor!
I really enjoyed Prof. Allen even though I'm really not into history. If you are an essay type of person, you'll love him. I wasn't too sure about the daily quiz thing at first, but if you read the section it can really help your grade. This was a great class, and definitely not hard.
He doesn't know how to discuss ONE topic at a time. He goes on from one topic to ten million different topics in one minute. I don't recommend him UNLESS you already have PLENTY of knowledge on this subject.
he is not a good teacher at all. austin allen is very diffcult to understand because he goes of one subject to another with out his students understanding. the book he recommended is not useful at all because it does not help you with the tests at all.
Easy professor for History as you meet for an A. Take notes and study the study guild well to prepare the exam. NO MARCHING OR Mult. Choices. All exams are 4/9 identifies from total 21-22 identifies, and 2/4 from 6-7 topics Essaies. Listen the class carefully and just write down what you know and learned then you can get good grades.
he is awesome. nice, cool guy, really good teacher. he breaks it down until you get it. but it's History so it's all lecture. He'll repeat it so you get your notes in. He just rocks my socks. *tear* awesome professor. I'm gonna miss that guy! *chokes*
Dr. Allen is an excellent teacher. I had Dr. Allen for 2 classes this past semester and he was very good at explaining the topics and requirements for passing his class. He really makes the material easy to understand and constantly checks for your understanding of the topics being discussed. If you have questions please ask. Excellent teacher!
Very energetic lecturer, I enjoy going to his class even though it really isn't mandatory. Quizzes are online and very easy, Tests are mostly a short essays and a longer essay, but he doesn't grade hard at all. Would definitely recommend, taking him next semester.
Awesome professor! I usually HATE any kind of history, but one class with professor Allen made me love it. Frequent but very easy (pretty much word for word in the textbook) online quizzes are given before each class to help you know and better understand the material. He grades very fairly, i'm very excited to take the second HIST with him again
Very engaging lecturer, tests did take some studying but it all came from the lecture.
Mr. Allen means well,he does great lecures, somewhat boring though. His class is not that hard, but does require studying. His test are 30 multiple choice, maps, and essays. He never grades the test in a timely manner. Never! You will be waiting forever to get a graded test back, oh, and never replys to emails!
Boring Boring Boring! I love history but his class was torture. He got easily distracted and all he talked about was Pink Floyd and the Simpsons.
He is a good teacher and pretty easy.
This class was awesome enjoys controversy, he is a fair grader, 3 papers, no final, read your material
4 tests over 4 chps each time, 4 book reports, 5 essays PER unit but one essay dropped each unit. class is not mandatory, just read and you'll be fine. easy grader, hard tests need to reaaally study. 50 mult choice one essay. gives review. not so bad if you can handle the book reports.
Cool teacher I took him this summer and barely went...still got a B!
Great lectures. Read the entire text in the class. Read four books too. Wrote a one page paper for every class over reading, and two pages on each book. If you read and do the papers you will pass. Interesting class.
I never understood what he was lecturing about. The books didn't help one bit.
dont get this teacher!!!
I'd def. recommend him. He's very, very smart and really funny. We had several articles to read- though some we didn't even really discuss. As long as you pay attention to lectures, you will do fine. All of our tests were essay questions. This was the 2nd semester I took him and would take him again in the future if I needed more history courses.
Dr. Allen knows what he is talking about, although sometimes he gets side tracked. He is a great lecturer, and attendance is mandatory if you want to have the information for the tests. Four tests, all essay, be prepared to write good, informaed essays. Read the articles assigned and use them in the essays. Slow grader.
His class was not bad. His exams are really focused on writing, I am not a fan of that but its not bad if that is what you are good at or like to do. Overall, you can pass. He is fair and interesting. Just make sure you pay attention and go to class regularly.
P. Allen was an amazing teacher! Super helpful before exams, only midterm and final and a few quizzes. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but if you showed up everyday you'll get an A. Sometimes gets sidetracked
DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE I failed all the quizzes cu zi didnt do em. i didnt write my major paper due @ the end of the semester, im pretty sure i flunked 2 tests, i never looked though. and i kicked ass on the final cuz the review is the final and i passed his class. hegets sidetracked really easily so there isnt a whole lot of lecture going on. hes g8
Awesome teacher. Do the review sheets and READ! and you will be more than prepared for tests.
Take his class if you don't mind writing. I took him this past summer and all of our test were written exams, but aside from all of the writing he is very straight forward with what he expects from you in the beginning. Read your textbook and pay attention and you're good.
Hello All, this is an honest review... Instructor Allen is a great Instructor. His online class is great. Assignments: Group Discussion(Class Participation) and Quizzes Exams: Three (Total) Paper: One (Total) His course is organized and he is easy to contact if you have questions about an Assignment or Exam. Take him and you will pass!!!
Dr. Allen is a great professor. He provides you with ways to reach him and gives immediate feedback. He expects you to do the work, but this is a university history class. The class is a core requirement, so you might as well take it form someone who will give you some insight into our real history. Take the class.
Not much into History but I def learned a lot from his class and enjoyed it! He does get sidetracked but he's a very smart guy, he knows his stuff and will explain everything if you are confused. Very easy going and easy to talk to. Keep up w assignments. He also wrote part of the textbook, Moretta, we used in class. Will take again!
I might be a little biased when it come to Allen, but I just generally love the guy. This was my second time taking him and it was a joy both times. If you read, understand, and give good feedback you can pass this course with an A! Three papers, got 2 A's and a B on each one. Loved this course, TAKE HIM!!! :) 3 3 3
Wow, a professor at UHD that actually cares about his students. He will go above and beyond to assist you in making an A, and most importantly a well formatted argumentive paper. Overall great guy!
Professor Allen's video lectures were great to watch & I found them easier to digest than the textbook, which I only used to site information from when needed. I found him to be very fair and while you have to earn your grade, he makes the material easy to figure out. He is also very accessible by email and very pleasant. Enjoyable class!
Posted lecture videos everyday which were very useful. Different group discussion board every week for participation grade and rest of grade is essays, no tests. Overall a really nice guy that really cares about history but doesn't focus too much on composition skills.
The class itself is interesting, but there is SO MUCH READING. I'm not even lying, we had to buy 8 books for this class. Expect to read about 200 pages minimum a week for this class. You have a discussion and a short essay due every week based off of the assigned reading. Also have to do a 12 page research paper. This class has a huge workload!!
I took this course online and of course, there is a lot of reading assignments to do. You'll end up having to read 8 books in total which you would have to purchase. He seems like an easy going guy but as long as you do your assignments on blackboard, you'll pass.
I've taken him twice. He really knows his subject matter. You will buy lots of books and do lots of reading and write lots of papers and/or respond on discussion boards. He's fair and worth both your time and money.
Well, he never gave us grades backs until the last day of the semester. He is nice, but he tends to talk about his daughter and family most of the time. Ended up getting an A but I was worried. No one showed up to class regularly.
Professor Allen is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. However, the work load is extremely heavy. I had to purchase 8 books and was required to read a minimum of 200 pages per week. Also, I didn't receive the majority of my grades until the last day of class. His email response time was slow. However, he does know his stuff!
I took Professor Allen during a May-mini. History is a difficult subject for me to grasp but i managed to get an A in the course. He posted detailed lecture videos which really help. I would recommend getting the textbook, we had to do discussions and it was beneficial to have the textbook.
I love professor Allen. Being a seminar class (which I think are useless) class wasn't that heavy. He tends to just do lectures and we weren't graded by many things. He knows his stuff and is very passionate. Also, he helps you whenever you have e a question. Very caring and respected.
Great professor, Do your discussions and youll be fine!!
He is always willing to help his students and always available. Make sure you read and answer the discussion questions because there is a different group discussion board every week for a participation grade and 3 tests. I struggle with History but he made it seem easy to understand. Overall, a great professor I recommend taking him.
Easy A!!! Take him he is awesome. If you fail its because you didnt turn in assignment. His tests are written but its not hard at all!! Take him!!
talks a lot but nice professor. no homework so thats a plus what sucks is this class had nothing to do with my major but i had no other choice
Good professor, however he had a lot of lecture videos and they were usually over an hour to an hour and a half long. Took his class online over the summer and there was a lot of reading to do. Participation is key when it came to online discussions and his test were essays regarding the class topics. Not bad, I would take him again.
I took Prof Allen for winter 3 weeks semester. One of the best professors ever! I've been postponing taking history for the longest time and I just took it because it's my senior year. watch the videos. 1 discussions each week, do more than 1 post, 3-4 post at least give good info and you will get full grade. the final paper is easy start early
His lectures are pretty entertaining. If you pay attention, he makes Simpson references. I say you do not really have to come to class because his lectures online are about the same thing. Watch out for the group project. It might hurt your grade.
I wish I had something positive to say about him, but not wait, I do! He is pretty active on FB!!! I am sure he is a good person but he definitely is not a good professor 1) does not reply to emails or messages 2) Does not grade until 2 days before grades are due 3) It was a horrible experience for me; I am now traumatized.
Take him if you have a laid back attitude like he does. Wants everything perfect in assignments, though he himself doesn't wanna do anything. Doesn't even provide feedback nor reply to your texts or emails. Has posted everything on bbl and thinks his job is done. Overall, bad professor. Too much expectations or a person who doesn't work himself.
He's fairly easy as long as you stay on top of the subject and know what the assigned papers are about. You will pass easily.
Really great professor his UHD seminar class is really easy. All we have are two paper, our mid-term that is an essay and our final is also an essay
One of the most methodical professors taken. He his lecture heavy in addition to lots of reading material. I guess its expected in studying American Constitutional History. Would take again.
I took this class in a 3-week mini, he has quite a bit of video lectures, but I honestly didn't watch any of them. There are 4 discussions worth 25 pts each, the final was a 4-page paper that is half of your grade. For the discussions, the more you post the better your grade. Overall, I actually learned a lot, and it wasn't too bad.
Took him in the spring. Great professor, pretty funny and tries to engage the class in the lecture. Pretty easy course, just make sure you do the assigned readings and be ready to discuss them in class.
A very knowledgeable historian who is very passionate about teaching. Lecture-heavy, posted several lengthy videos per week. Discussion posts are very detailed, must interact with peers. Tests consists of two questions that must be answered in essay form. VERY LENIENT GRADER! If he sees you trying you will get credit for just putting forth effort!
Great Class if you are wanting to learn about the United States Constitution. Get ready to read important US supreme court cases and engage with fellow students in classes. I recommend this class, just give yourself time to read. No textbook, he gives handouts of readings and SCOTUS cases. Prior History knowledge will help you.
Professor Allen is very chill. He uses online textbooks, but is free so you dont need to spend any money for the textbook. He gives you lecture videos as well. All I did for this class is weekly discussions,3 test,& signature assig. The test are like two short answers, never multiple choice. You have a week to complete everything.
Took him for Summer 2020 and he was awesome! He posted all his lectures online, provided a free text book and was easy to reach via email. I believe all the test were just papers which were really easy using his lecture and textbook. I recommend him!
Free textbook provided along with other course materials and videos. The only downside to this class was the discussions and the tests. the tests were written only, no multiple-choice as well as the final exam. However, he's not a harsh grader, accepts late work, and gives a whole week to complete the work! I recommend taking this class!
Professor Allen made history interesting to learn about. I loved his lecture videos. Gives papers to write, but noting too extreme. If you read the textbook and watched his videos, you'll do fine with your writing. He's quick with responding and entering grades into BB. 2 thumbs up for prof Allen!
He was honestly such a great teacher. This was my first university course, and the transition was great. I took him during summer semester, I dont regret it. Tests were essay tests, 1.5 page long. And discussion posts, just try your best and you will be great! Highly recommend!
Lectures are fairly interesting, I only watched them cause I didnt want to read the textbook. You have 3 tests that are 1-2pages for 2 prompts (gives you a week to do them), a signature assign., 15 discussion posts where you post 7 comments relating a quote to class but he is very late to grading so its hard to know where you stand in the class
How class was ply but his Perusall discussions made the class unbearable and frustrating. You have to write 7 posts for a grade every week and have it be graded out of 3 points. Even if you did 7+ posts the most you could get is a 2!! Hes also hard to reach outside of class even though he gives his email and phone number for us to contact him
In all honesty if your taking this class online for a summer course. I would recommend, but a full semester of this professor was a nightmare! In the beginning he was great. Now at the end its a pain to get a hold of him, no more help, and lectures are sporadic if theyre even uploaded. Also if youve never used Perusal its terrible!
Professor gives unnecessary and unrealistic amount of reading assignments. You get 2 days to read about 6 assignments with about 15 pages each. You have to write comments on all of them. When you email him he doesnt get back to you. Do not recommend this teacher
I don't understand the positive reviews. Awful teacher. Does not reply, does not work with you, and grades the work late. By the time i got feedback on my first paper, I was doing my final and didn't do previous papers to his liking. I never knew what my grade was or what I should be working on. Do not take him, he is horrible.
130 readings each reading is worth 3pts total of 390pts. 300pts equals 100% 90pts available for extra credit. write 3 comments on readings. I recommend responding to others comments and rewording their responses. Test are papers. 1 week to complete 2 page paper w/ 2 prompts. Read the book for test. takes long to grade. is lenient if you talk to him
I was nervous about this class as I've always been bad at History, but this professor made the course so easy! He gave us 3 units, consisting of 1 test and about 5 discussion threads per unit. It is easy to fall behind, but as long as you read each respective chapter and write your discussion post every day through the week you'll do good!
Worse Professor EVER!! Because I forgot to cite one statement on my test (paper) he gave me a 0! If he was the last professor on earth I would drop out of a school! I am highly upset that he gave me that 0.
don't let the reviews fool you honestly I took professor Allen for mini course and let me say it really easy just 3 discussions and a final paper and the discussions just 250 words and you do 9+ posts essay A+ overall he is really easy.
Syllabus is straightforward & followed. Get ready to write & read. No easy A, put in the work, get an A. He is easy to contact and follows up fast. Grades work slow but gives great feedback. He does change work due but to the students advantage. Great guy, knows Constitutional History & Law. Does not drive an agenda. Taking him again in the fall.
Not easy, but somehow still fun. Once you get over the shock of seeing that you have to watch an hour or two of videos a day and make 9 discussion posts/2 weeks, you realize that Allen is the best History prof. you'll ever have. Actually knows what he's talking about and is happy to be talking about it. Show up ready. He'll make it worth your time.
Professor Allen does give long lecture videos but if you listen he is good at giving information. There is a lot of discussions but they aren't hard. There's 3 essays about 2 pages long but not that difficult. I would take him again!!
I took professor Allen for online 2302, he was a great professor. He was honest and cared about his students. His feedback on our essays was always helpful and his assignments were clear. Not a hard class at all, you just need to make sure you are doing the work!
Dr. Allen was a great professor. The daily lectures were interesting. Daily discussion requirements of approx. 250 words. The papers were not graded promptly making it hard to know exactly where you stand in the moment. Overall, I would definitely recommend his class!
Prof. Allen was a wonderful professor. I had him for Historian's Craft and he was very diligent. He would send out personalized videos about your assignments and break down what you did right and wrong. I appreciate his grit because it made me more confident in my writing! Definitely recommend!
U have to watch video lectures b4 coming to class to know what he's talking abt and that's also how he takes attendance besides in class attendance. Tests are ok as long as you study ur notes, only get 1 note card(front only) to help out. TOOK HIM ALL SEMESTER TO GRADE ANYTHING, so that sucked and he makes you do grp project.
