Boyle knows how to make tough and tedious mathematical concepts comprehensible in a short amount of time. He gives lots of work between all the different assignments so be ready to have lots of time spent doing various sums and reviewing concepts, but if you're thorough about it you should be able to get most of them eventually.
At first, this class was hard but once I got used to his way of teaching it was okay. Tbh if you know how to do the think pairs and the homework, then you'll be okay. Don't procrastinate on the videos because it will make it easy to be left behind. I bombed the second exam and still ended up passing the class.
Do not recommend
Boyle gives a lot of room to boost your grade through homework which is nice and a group portion on the exams. I will still say this is the hardest class I have taken and the avg on exams were all 60s. He is not a great teacher though, lectures do not teach you anything and you need to have a very strong statistics background.
There is not much to say but RUN
Terrible professor, gets side tracked and goes down many rabbit holes for like 10 minutes every lecture. Oh, he also makes you pay for 3 different course materials about $225 in value. There are so many comparable platforms that are free or less expensive and just as nice as what he requires. He also says many ignorant things irrelevant to lecture.
Dr. Boyle is a great guy. He is younger than most ECON102 professors and makes you feel more level with him. Your grade is heavily based on homework assignments rather than exams, which was great for me as I am not a good test taker. He has a guided notes packet that you are able to buy and fill out during lectures. Highly recommend him!
Austin Boyle seemed great at first, but his class went downhill fast. He relies heavily on lectures, making attendance essential to grasp economics. His lectures are hard to follow, and the pricey course pack adds little value. His handwriting makes graphs tough to read, and grading errors were common. If you need to pass, don't take it with him.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures made absolutely no sense and the examples he gave were so poorly explained. Exams are similar to the assignments, but he changes them to the point that you need to know the concepts, which he doesn't teach well. Even the TA was confused when I went to a guided study group. DONT TAKE HIM!!!
His Exams are pretty hard. But he gives many study materials and does teach well. His study guides were very similar to the test, but you have to study the concepts on them to understand the exams thoroughly. He gives a lot of homework but it's good so one exam won't destroy your grade. He's tough but he has your best interest at heart.
This was by far the most BORING and UNBEARABLE class that I have ever taken. Sitting through his lectures is on a whole different level of boring, you will start to lose your mind. The material itself is already boring but his lectures make it even harder to understand. On top of this you have to spend upwards of $150 on materials which is absurd.
had to drop this class. too caught up in the material to actually make sure his students understand. basically need to attend every class in order to score a decent grade on the midterms and he also uses packback polls in class. if you have the option, take this class through a community college online or just pick a different professor.
This class was the bane of my existence. I would study so much and not get a good grade on the tests. The midterms are both multiple choice and open answer so be sure to know what you're doing. He does give partial credit on the exams. I probably could've went to a study sesh but whatever. He's not a bad professor, I'm just bad at economics lowkey.
Always teach things unrelated to the course. No partial credits at all. Choose a different professor if you have any choices. I do not want to say something else just RUN!!!
Lectures are just endless talking with no clear structure, super hard to follow. Don't expect help either. Spent $200 on materials we barely used. He says the coursepack is optional, but good luck passing without it. Overall, this class felt like a waste of time and money. (but I had to take it) !!USE THE STUDY GUIDES FOR EXAMS!!
You have to buy $150+ course material that doesn't help. He claims that buying the course pack is optional, but literally everything is in it, so you need it. If you ask him a question, he'll confuse you even more to try to get you to understand it yourself. The study guides are very similar to the exams, but it doesn't cover everything, so study.
He spends over half the lecture talking about things not related to economics or what will be on the exams. Study guide questions match up to exam questions, but still stuff on the exam not covered on the study guides. Attendance taken from packback questions, but you can do them outside of class so attendance doesn`t really matter on tuesdays.
By far the worst professor I have had at PennState. Creates study guides and says he has useful material to study exams, but never elaborates on these materials and they end up confusing students more. Exams are insanely hard and he spends most of class talking about irrelevant points that will not be on the exam. Do not take Econ102 with him
Took this class as a subplan credit. Boyle makes you pay over $150 in three "add ons" to the class. Exams are insanely difficult with the average on them being about a 65%. Topics in class literally don't correlate to the exams. Went to exam review session with TA and he did not even know what was going on. studied 15 hours and failed last exam.
Took this class and was lost during the lectures because of the random side topics he would discuss. When he was explaining graphs, you couldn't actually see what he was doing, mostly, and it seemed like he was talking to himself a lot of the time. Spent over $200 on this class for programs and an online textbook that was never used. Don't do it!!!
DON'T! Austin makes you spend over $200 on materials that you don't use. I have not once even laid my eyes on the text book. If you have to take this class study with the practice exams and explain the questions to yourself. He just talks to himself about random stuff in all his lectures and is the core reason of 95% of my crash outs this semester.
Lectures are very boring and you will not understand the graphs he draws because he goes too fast. Exams are very hard. 2 midterms and 1 final. Way too much homework. Do the practice tests and go to GSG sessions. Only giving him a 2 because he can be helpful sometimes in office hours and seems like he wants his students to succeed.
Boyle is so bad at teaching lol. For 306 you have to take him since he is the only professor for this course. I didn't go to class bc he just rambles and I ended with an A-. Literally, just make sure to do all the assignments and for exams practice the practice exam and you"ll be fine. Wish there was a better 306 professor who actually teaches.
this man is the most frustrating professor i have ever met. he barely understands the class himself, then the exams come and they are the weirdest, application-based questions i have ever seen. he makes you pay $200 in class materials just for none of them to help you learn. take this class with any other professor you can. he is the worst.
I wish I did research before taking this class, because this is the worst professor I've had at PSU. I studied for 10+ hours for all of his exams and got 70's every time. The lectures are unhelpful, homework is also useless, and he doesn't teach by the textbook you're forced to buy. Take any other professor.
Genuinely the worst professor I've had at psu. The lectures SO boring & half of the time he's just rambling about something that barely has anything to do with the class. Spent 200 on course materials that I never used (including guided notes that were literally just the slides with fill in the blanks). TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
I haven't left a comment on this site before, but I have to offer an alternative view given all the negative feedback here. Dr. Boyle is my favorite professor I've had at Penn State. He delivered engaging lectures in which he would tie class concepts into real world matters, and he is helpful and non-condescending to those who come to him for aid.
His teaching style was confusing and it was really hard to stay focused in class. the exams were very hard and I only passed this class from watching the gsg videos
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! I used every resource available to study for the exams and it did not help at all. The final was horrific and made no sense. On top of that you don't get to know what you got right and wrong unless you go to office hours which just isn't feasible for everyone. Please take anyone else!!! I don't know how this man has a job.
Study 16+ hours or perish. Final felt like an academic horror film—then it actually started storming. Left the exam soaked and emotionally unstable. Professor patrols the room like a test-taking hawk. Homework saves your grade (barely). Bring snacks, a raincoat, and maybe a therapist. Proceed with caution.
WORST EVER. I hate this man. There is SO much work. This is a basic econ course and he made it so much harder. 2 mid terms and 1 final. I got an F on 2/3 of the exams. He is TERRIBLE. Only reason I got a decent grade was because of how much work he gives. The lectures make no sense and he just rambles. Avoid this man at all costs.
I don't know what other people are talking about with this class being hard. Yeah the Packback questions were really annoying but if you come to class and make an honest effort you should be fine. Professor Boyle is also a really nice guy and totally willing to help if you go to office hours or stay after class.
He is funny and nice it's just his class structure is very frustrating. We have reading quizzes on one chapter, homework on a different chapter at the same time, and his lectures were always a chapter or two behind. The material isn't too hard just hard to learn in time for all the assignments and exams.
People are kinda overreacting IMO this was by far the easiest class I took this semester. Actually reading the textbook helps. He does talk alot without actually saying much and readings are like a week behind lectures which is weird but the exams were a breeze if you understand the material. Bonus points for the Homestar Runner reference.
Honestly just don't take this class with this professor, if there is another option take it. He truly just made things difficult when they didn't have to be.
Personally I just did not like the guy. He can be nice, but is also just rude and condescending at times. He also is not a good professor he goes through topics quickly making it hard to keep up. He also gets very sidetracked. The tests are very hard and there is a lot of homework. The class is doable though however if you keep up with the work.
Professor Boyle is nice, but not my favorite prof. Lectures were long and kind of all over the place, hard to follow, and I still felt I had to teach myself a majority of the material. The first two midterms are ok if you study, but the final was impossible. He isn't clear about what will be on it, and it tanked my grade. It's all multiple choice.
Professor Boyle went off topic alot in class and it was hard to copy the graphs he made because his handwriting is hard to read. The slides he posts don't have the graphs so this made it hard to study on my own after.
Please do not take a class with him. drop it
The most failed classes are this and 304 but if you are an econ major, you have to take these classes. I thought Boyle was a great professor. There is a ton of work, and you have to show up to class on time because he does in-class assignments. For exams, they were exactly like the practices. Overall hard, but he prepares his students well.
All of his exams are hard, just buy the lion tutors. His final was not real, it was all multiple choice. Use chat gpt on every homework because he makes you come in class and do it with partners, then grades it for accuracy. Taking notes in class are pointless, I never used a single one.
Lectures have no clear direction so he just talks super fast and spits out multiple different ideas for the same thing. You have to watch the lectures outside of class. If you know how to do math you will have a better time teaching yourself with the videos.
He was truly a nice person, but his class was bad. WAY to much homework, the exams were way harder than they should have been. I also feel like I walked away learning a very minimal amount of information.
Lectures in morning, which already makes it tough to stay engaged. However, the main issue is the exams when the class average on midterms is around 50%, something clearly isn't working. The material is challenging enough on its own, and the lectures don't always make the concepts any easier to follow. I wouldn't recommend this class. Take McLeod.
One of the worst professors I've had at Penn State. He rambles and rambles and it's not hard to tell everyone except three kids are completely lost in class. You will be doing busy work almost daily. Test averages are somehow the highest ever (65%) even though exams are almost 1:1. He is the only professor for this class so good luck avoiding him.
MESSED UP. Somehow he taught this class and made it seem like it was 2 classes combined, either the material was too intense, or he made it seem like it. Avoid taking this specific class with him.
I never leave reviews but he is one of the worst professors at Penn St... lectures are incredibly useless and a complete waste of time. He doesn't teach what is on the exams and his class is all over the place. He assigns lecture videos that cover things we learned a month ago and then talks about random stuff during class. Horrible teacher.
Don't do it.
If you have any other option, TAKE THEM. Professor Austin did not know how to teach economics and always spit bs in the classroom. His exams was far way different from what he taught in the class and the video lecture. He genuinely does not care about the students at all, too strict about small thing and it is ridiculous. dont choose him
Very structured course, which was both helpful and demanding. The material is dense and unfamiliar, so it can be challenging. If math isn't your strong suit, you'll need to take the time to make it one. With consistent effort and serious studying before exams, you can do well. Difficult, but rewarding overall.
