The first half of the semester is a bear. There is a lot of material to understand. Memormizing does no good. UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS FULLY! Murphy is a great professor and the class, though difficult, is the most beneficial finance class you'll have.
Horrible class!
Train wreck. He often combines several steps when solving problems, so it's very tough to follow. 1/3 of the class dropped after the midterm (not me). Don't take the class if you just want to learn how to pick stocks. You won't use what's taught.
VERY confusing. He is too smart for his own good. His exams are horrible. The exams do not test what is taught in class or in homework. Unless you like high amounts of stress and frustration, avoid this class.
Highly qualified to teach but lacks the skills necessary to communicate with students. He expects you to grasp and retain material at a scholarly level. Aced the exams but did poorly on group project and still received a 3.6 in the class. The class is very tough but he grades very fair.
Nice guy, but awful teacher. Like others have said, he is so smart, but has NO clue how to actually educate students. The average grade on our mid-term was a failing grade....very sad! I would absolutely not recommend this professor.
To Sum what others have said:teach yourself with his book and his notebook and take good notes in class because his lectures will confuse the hell out of you. With good notes (with his examples) make your cheatsheets for the midterm.Get as many pts on the midterm as you can because the final is a bi.
this guy is nuts. cannot teach in any way, shape or form. looks like he has been playing with the Grateful dead, no, wait a minute, thats his class.
Takes more time to try to understand what he is writing than to comprehend the material. when u try to talk to him he is even more confusing. teaches (and looks) like hes straight out the 70's... needs to get updated....
Needs to communicate what to study for the exams.
Worst class I have taken at Oakland. Prof is straight out of the 70's and his textbook and lecture are impossible to understand. His grading is terrible and not straight forward. Avoid this class if at all possible. Learned nothing from this class.
Yes it is a tough class and hard to follow his lectures. The book does suck, but GO to class, easy to get lost. The exams are tough, but curved like 20 points plus you can bring 4 sheets of notes. The project is time consuming too, but will help out. He cracks a lot of jokes and is a really nice guy. Totally dig the 70s look with the Peace bandana.
Not that bad of a class. You have to go, or will get lost, as the book is very confusing. Large curve for the midterm. Can't see how anyone would fail the class. Allowed 4 pages of notes front and back. Final is exactly like the group project that you will work on. Know that stuff and your set.
A TOUGH class, kind of hard to follow in lectures, but he makes it easy to get a good grade with large adjustments on exams. Final exam is based off project. Graded the projects kind of hard, but overall not impossible to get above a 3.0. He is a nice guy and funny, and willing to help.Go to his office for any questions on the project will help.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Impossible to follow, book was terrible by his own admission (and he wrote it). Material is so specific that it is not of use once outside the class. Avoid at all costs.

Had him for 416 & 417 and it was a complete waste of my time. I didn't learn a thing because his lectures are incomprehenisible and the text (his book) is the same way, so you never get anything out either one. I would avoid taking him for 417 just so you don't have to go through his system twice. Better off teaching yourself with different text
Weird dude, really into feminism. He can't speak very well, and in 417 he'll give you a midterm that will have you wondering if you studied for the correct class. Then he'll blame the class for performing poorly. He was great in 416 though.
As a professor he is a complete waste of space. I've aced every class I've taken in my MBA program and I am completely lost in this class. This guy couldn't teach a chihuahua to bark. Avoid him at all costs if you are actually interested in learning.
I am embarrassed to attend a University that would employ this man for so many years. I was excited to learn something in this class, and I am now more confused than when I started. This class has left me traumatized. I might quit school altogether now. Thanks Murph.
Bad experience. I dont care that i received a good grade, it didnt make the class any better, and it didn't make me learn more. It was a waste of time except for the project, which you taught yourself. The only way you could learn in a class with this instructor is if you taught yourself. If you have to teach yourself, why do you have to pay?
This is with out a doubt the worst class I have ever taken. Stay away. I wish there was a negative possible to rate clarity. For your own good don't take a class taught by him.
Incomprehensive, looks like a pot-smoking reject from the 1970's. Seriously, he wears a bandana all the time, and doesn't shave. Looks like a ****en Viggo Mortensen, with none of the charisma. Obviously a smart guy, but can't teach or communicate with humans. Hard to believe such a good university would employ a guy like this. Avoid his classes!
Based on prior comments, I feel many of the students shouldn't have been in a finance class. I work in the finance field and found his classes extremely helpful, especially given the awful environment our economy experienced in 2008. Students at OU expect to get a good grade regardless of their knowledge of a subject.
Like the previous comment, I believe many of the complaints come from students who should not be in finance classes. The class is complicated and you have to learn and understand the terms that are used in finance to better understand the professor. Quit being lazy, study, and you should walk away with a good grade and some valuable knowledge.
Very difficult class, but extremely beneficial experience that all finance majors should have. Murphy takes a lot of heat b/c his exams are rough, but if you do all practice problems, pay attention in class, and complete his pre-exams, you should do fine. Extra credit will be given. Yes it's hard work, but take it seriously and you'll be okay!
Worst experience i have had at this university. He uses a book that he has written 20 years ago, the examples are no longer relevant. He rants about the financial industry, you learn his opinions , his formulas his way. His grading is extremely subjective if he does not like you your grade will reflect that. Avoid him at all costs.
I cannot believe Oakland University continues to keep this mans employment. His exams were harder than the CPA exam, he loved ranting over who knows what and be prepared to spend 50+ hours on his project. Oh & that curve that everyone talks about doesn't exist.
This is the most difficult class in the finance program. Go to class. Take copious notes. Do the problems that he suggests you do; they're listed in the syllabus. Use his exam samples for the mid-term. Ask questions. Get involved in the project; the final is based on it. A lot of work, but passable and important material for finance majors.
If he tells you to do homework as you get it, listen. Same with the project, do it as you can instead of waiting till the last minute. Exams were very difficult, but he gave 30 pts extra credit on the first. This is the hardest finance class, but I ended up doing the best in it. It's really not that bad!
Smart guy, but poor teacher, very unclear and some of his answers are, "Just Because". Or as he calls it, "Murphy Math" which can change as he sees fit and makes things very confusing for those not well versed on the topic. I would not recommend this professor unless stocks and bonds is you thing. Do not pick up this teacher to fill a FIN credit.
Oh yeah.. It's a rough ride, but give the time and effort and you'll feel fully competent to manage your own portfolio and more. He bashes Harvard (et al) for preaching "theory" without practical application and plays around with an ego, but I found it quite amusing. Some find him "rude," but if you have fun with it & pay him respect, he's fine.
This is what finance is all about. Great in depth study of bonds and stocks. Of course, lots to learn out there, but this is a great start. If you put the time in, it isn't too bad. Class average was low on first exam. Second exam is a pick-me-up. Just take it
This class was joke. He talks fast and expects that you're already on his level of investment knowledge. Midterm average was below a 40% and he said he was disappointed in us... Maybe if he could actually teach his class would pass
It is astounding that a professor could be so unclear in teaching material that he himself wrote. The material in his book is outdated, often referring to terminology that is no longer relevant. He requires the class to use his software, which is not compatible with any modern OS and was originally written on Windows 95. "State of the art" hahahaha
If you are expecting to automatically receive a good grade because its an MBA course,do yourself and every one else in the class a favor and do not take it. If you put an effort to learn the material, you will succeed. I would not recommend this class to anyone coming right from undergrad, you will actually have to do work that is challenging
Toughest class in the finance department at OU. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Barely passing this class consumed my semester. Take this in the summer with someone else! With the midterm average of 41 in two separate classes,he is proud that his exams are the toughest in the school. Prides himself on terrible teaching.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. The books are useless and poorly written, and he is also very arrogant and not helpful at all. Save yourself time and money and take this class with someone else.
This class is really hard and a lot of work, everyone fails the mid-terma nd the first half of the course is really hard. You will make up for it in the second half of the course with the project and the final. Everyone usually passes and with a good grade. If you need to take this class just tough it out and take it.
Easily worst professor at OU. He wrote the book, which is useless. Regardless of what anyone says, although you can and will pass with an extensive amount of work, it is all useless information you will never use in the real world.
Great professor! Sparked my interest, and I learned a lot from him. Very knowledgeable. Suck it up and take Murphy. You will leave his class with info you can actually use in real life and in your finance career.
I want to warn everyone not to take this class under any circumstances. The professor wrote the book and is the only one to teach this method. He provided very little help understanding very complicated material and his exams were next to impossible. I would tell everyone that I know to avoid this course like the plague.
Worst professor at OU. Avoid at all costs. He acts like you should already know the material. He wrote the book so if he's teaching methods don't work for you the book will be useless. His exams are impossible to pass and the Group project requires endless hours of work. His instructions and exam questions are unclear.
The material is challenging and the course is tough but it is worth it. If you take good notes on the examples shown in class and work through practice problems on your own (all answers are available for checking purposes), you will get a 4.0 in the class. It is an advanced MBA course and you will get what you put in. Do the work and don't be lazy.
Assumes everyone has the same level of understanding as him. To pass the midterm you would need every exam he has given, with entire class to pass. Homework problems don't help at all, especially for the midterm. Unclear when you ask for help or what to do on project. Take with another professor, if possible. Project doesn't help you on final.
Murphy is extremely tough but states he is not out to fail anyone. His goal is to simply make you work for your grade, and you will have to devote a large amount of time to this class. Nothing in this class is impossible. Ask a lot of questions about the group project as well as he can be unclear about what he expects.
Horrible, not worth taking. Grades are based on his opinion. Nothing will prepare you for anything in his class. Recommend another professor. Must buy materials that are outdated, and unable to use on PC's.
I read the negative reviews on here and figured the kids were just dumb as often times has happened. They were not. Guy has been sued, dean and head of finance have had to give passing grades because he failed 80% of his class. Midterm average was 42%. Has no grading criteria and I've learned nothing. I'm a 3.8 student and I hope to get a 2.0.
For this class, honestly he wasn't that bad. He's not the best teacher out there but as long as you show up, put forth decent effort, and practice some book problems, you'll be fine. His curve is pretty generous so take advantage of that. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives out points to students who answer homework problems in class.
Save yourself and listen to the reviews! Worst professor I've taken at OU. Spends entire class going over answers to the homework and doesn't teach. Class is based off of 3 exams and 25% participation (which is answering hw questions). Exams are extremely difficult, class average on the first exam was a 52%.
Look he's a funny quirky guy but he gets lost in his own lectures. He often clarified homework answers with a student, showing that he truly does not know the information. If you're good with a calculator and long word problems go ahead and register for him.
Murphy is terrible at teaching. He reads off of slides and talks the entire class period. He goes off into tangents and loses the point of what he was talking about. He forces participation in order to get attendance for the day. The only grades for the semester came from the midterm, a project, and the final. Worst class I have ever taken.
7 out of 23 passed 416. He is tough. Quote he gave the last day of class, "congrats, you're smarter than 99% of financial advisors". He was right. They suck. And they handle your parents retirement funds. It is not a joke. Ony take if you truly are dedicated to being top in the industry. Degree not required to be a fin adv. Food for thought.
He's not the best; in fact if you had a test bank and the homework answers you could probably teach the class better. It almost seems as if after the first few weeks he stops teaching and just goes over the homework while you have to learn the rest. He does not input grades and does some odd things with the grading scale but they actually help you.
I usually take courses with Professors who aren't popular/liked because I learn a lot in those classes, but this teacher sucks. He may be smart, but knows nothing about teaching. After taking this class, I've found a new appreciation/respect for teachers who actually develop a clear lesson plan and can communicate key points to the students.
Classic example of a rotten prof who uses tenure as a shield. Egotistical, cannot stick to a lesson plan, and is a waste of tuition money and time. Avoid this guy like the coronavirus
I cannot emphasize this enough, do not take any class J Murphy offers. You will kill yourself putting in the work and either fail or barely pass. Take the warning and run. Average midterm score was in the 40s and he refused to curve it. The entire class went to the head of accounting/finance @OU and because he has tenure no repercussions. STAY AWAY
Class is extremely difficult and is practically self taught. Professor does not do any examples which makes the problems even harder. Tests were only 20 questions each which means each question was worth 5%. No HW just graded on test as well. If you can stay away.
WORST professor EVER. Grade is made of 3 exams and pop quizzes. I can not stress how BAD this professor is- I'm a 4.0 student and I was happy receive a C. Rude to students, can not stick to a lesson plan, not helpful in class, outside of class, or via email. Does not put grades online and will not email your grade, so you never know where you stand
Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had at Oakland University. Even if my classes were difficult, I blame myself for a poor grade. Not this class. He grades with ZERO leniency, teaches with no structure, and assumes everyone knows everything already. He is smart, but cannot teach at all. Stay far away from his classes.
DO NOT TAKE!! Honestly the worst MBA class I've taken and I failed by a couple points short of passing. This is the first time I performed poorly in an MBA class. Murphy's class was confusing, poorly taught and he didn't answer the right questions. He wrote the textbook which is just as confusing as his lectures. I highly regret taking this class.
Be prepared to teach yourself. the classes are worthless because he just goes through homework problems. This class consists of "oral quizzes" and lectures with no sense of organization. He gets lost in his lectures and rambles on. Nobody would show up to class if he didn't give pop quizzes. He acts like everyone already knows the material.
This man is smart but he cannot teach. Assigns optional hw problems to practice but none of which appear on the exams. Attendance only mandatory bc of the "oral quizzes" he tries to fit within the last 15 min of class, otherwise, lecture is useless. I would've failed if it wasn't for COVID. Take this class if you have the skill to teach yourself.
Very poor professor. His lectures are not good at all. I just quit attending them and began reading the book and did fine. He just jumps around from slide to slide, not taking too much time with the information that you need to know, then proceeds to go off on tangents. Avoid if you can, because the course isn't too easy to begin with.
This professor "teaches" as if you already know the information, making it very difficult to actually learn anything from the lectures. He doesn't write out any problems that you need to know how to solve. He will summarize entire chapters in 1 or 2 slides and move on. Avoid if you can because you won't learn much.
Avoid this professor at all costs. Not once will you recieve feedback on your mini cases eventhough they account for 80% of your grade. Hes a perfect example of how tenure has destroyed higher eduaction. I cannot stress this enough, AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. I shouldve listened as the class average is around a C. I wish the SBA would do something...
We were graded by 100 "minicases" that's it. These are just word problem questions made by him and very confusing. I struggled to match his expectations when answering. This is due too lectures being unorganized, and hard to follow with his random tangents of material. He walked through some Qs when we had did poorly on previous sections.
Yes, I did get an A in his course but don't let that fool you. You will have to teach yourself or try to look up every assignment in this course. Doesn't provide feedback and will not answer questions clearly. Lectures are him reading off powerpoints and talking about already completed problems. 100 case studies and 2 projects. Don't recommend!!
Prof. Murphy is not a good professor, stay away if you can. The class was graded on three items: HW (100 PTS), Project #1 (10 PTS), Project #2 (5 PTS) and is graded out of 100 PTS, so technically the projects are "extra credit" but the work is not worth it. He writes all of the HW problems and the book does not help. Asking questions is pointless
Do NOT take this class. He lectures like everyone already has extensive knowledge on this subject in a survey level class (which is a business minor class). Lectures are not helpful at all and his instruction is unclear. You better be prepared to learn everything on your own and pay for Chegg to be able to do decently on all your mini-cases (hw).
Professor Murphy is a very unhelpful professor. 85% of your grade is dependant upon homework assignment that he never gives feedback for. We are given a grade without knowing what we are being marked incorrect for. He is so unhelpful when students ask for help and we express that we are obviously struggling. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Wish I would have seen the reviews before taking him. Everything is an example or he goes off on tangent so nothing makes sense. Didnt tell us how much the book mattered (basically assumed we would read the ch without prompt) and even when reading it didnt make sense because hes so scattered. No HW feedback but bases future problems off past ones.
If there was one class where I truly was not taught a single thing, it would have to be Finance 3000. When he speaks to the class, he assumes you have extensive knowledge on how to use financial tools such as yahoo finance. Absolutely horrendous setup and I advise you TO STAY AWAY. All classes seem to be set up identical.
Murphy is an arrogant jerk who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, but is at Oakland University??? He acts like he belongs at MIT or Wall Street. Boring beyond belief. Do NOT take. You will regret it.
Trash. Straight Trash. Do not register, I have nothing against him personally, but he is a horrible teacher.
DONT NOT TAKE THIS COURSE VERY TERRIBLE TEACHER. HE GIVES NO FEEDBACK WHATSOEVER
Worst experience I have had at Oakland University. I genuinely cannot understand how a class can be made so difficult - and for an online class, he barely knows how to use the Moodle page. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!
This professor doesn't offer extra credit or provide feedback on mini-cases if you've gotten any wrong. He's very difficult to work with. Don't take this class with him if you can. He makes OU look bad.
No feedback on assignments, can't use a computer, terrible lectures, and he makes it extremely difficult to get any help for your work.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. Please do not take this class. The whole class is two mini projects and 85 questions it seems pretty simple and straightforward but it is not. You will be spending hours on the 85 questions and if you get them wrong, he does not let you correct them leaving you hopeless as you wasted time.
Murphy is an extremely easy professor - he literally walks you through how to do lots of the test questions (which are open note and take home) in class. Sometimes he's bad at explaining some harder stuff but you can do practice problems from the textbook. The class gets a lot easier the later you get in the semester.
Horrible!! he doesn't know how to lecture nor explain the material. doesn't use Moodle to show you your grades, he just sends you random numbers without explaining what is what. This is an easy material class if you focus but this guy makes it 10x harder than it's supposed to be. Don't take him at all unless you want a headache and more anxiety.
Online lecture was horrible and was very dry. He helped with some of the problems, but not all. He did not explain the material well and what it actually means.
As a 3.9 student he is the worst prof I have ever had. You are only graded by 3 things. 85% of your grade comes from minicase problems he makes. He will not help you on these, he will say go look at a book problem example but the book problem is nothing like it. He also does not teach, just reads example problems and goes the math. No explanations
Worst prof I have ever had. Makes no sense in his lectures as he just reads off the math and doesnt explain anything. Graded by minicases. and 2 small assignments. He will not help you on the mini cases because he says they take the place of tests. If you ask a question he will just tell you to look at the book. AVOID HIM!
I am currently taking this class and I absolutely despise this professor. He claims to have set us up for these "mini-cases" yet from talking with other students I know in the class, they are struggling immensely alongside me. Embarrassment to OU this curriculum needs to change, he needs to leave, or he needs to be canned!
I am in the middle of the worst semester of my life. My father is currently undergoing terrible medical issues, and I approached Murphy to ask him for help and a bit of leeway. He stared blankly through the entire exchange where I wept like a baby, begging him to help me. No sympathy, no help, nothing. Thinking about killing myself. Do not take.
Yea just go and step on a nail and you've taken this guy. His teachings are irrelevant, old, and also usually not even relevent to the grade.
Professor Murphy needs to quit teaching. every question he does in class is through an excel sheet that he refuses to teach to the students, so there is absolutely no point in taking his class. You will fail his class and have to repay to take it with any other professor. He sets his students up for failure. Worst teacher I have ever had.
If this is the only section available for you to take wait and take it another time. This class is not worth paying for.
Professor is confusing & unhelpful. 75% of grade is based off of projects which build on each other. It's unknown which questions you got wrong or right. Avoid this professor at all costs & take the course with anyone else. The lectures are not engaging at all and I have been lost since day one. The grading for this course sets everyone up to fail.
Avoid this class if possible. The professor's teaching style is severely lacking - he just reads from the textbook without any real explanation. The mini-cases make up 85% of the grade, but the professor provides zero guidance. I found Unstuck ai really helpful for studying, but taking this class is still a major struggle.
The Worst Class ever! I have taken hundreds of classes in my career span of 25 years, but this gentleman does not know how to teach. Share spread sheet and expect you to memorize while he is typing. The spread sheet is confusing and all over the place. Ruthless grading. He is all over the place during the lecture and arrogant off course. Worst!
Do not take this professor he's horrible. Not only are all his assignments confusing and hard to understand. He is not understanding and doesn't care about your grade in his class.
The class is a breeze if you join the Zoom classes and pay attention. He literally does the homework with you, so you shouldn't have to do much outside of class besides a few McGraw Hill assignments. He makes sure everyone understands what's going on and is more than happy to help during or outside of class. You have to put the work in to get an A.
