Patient, creative, supportive, yet demanding. Very informed with subject matter. I would highly reccommend her for Statistics or Methods in Psychology.
For the whole semester I had a B, but then she failed me for my final paper- I ended up with a D. In cognitive psych, she gives a lot of little quizes- you must be on time!
Great teacher - don't expect easy work though.
Scared me away from class because on first day said that it would only get harder throughout the semester.First assignment was to read a research article and break it down, including terms. No explanation provided, not in textbook, nothing to do with stats!
Tough teacher! But fair and thorough, you'll leave her class knowing your subject. Having problems? Just go to her, she'll make the time for you.
I took Professor Benzeev in her first year of teaching. I found her to be clear, concise, creative, fun, helpful, and approachable - when I did not understand material. I recommend her for any of Psy. 494
She is a real character. Tests require knowledge of the lectures and readings. SHE GIVES ESSAY TESTS! She gave an essay test for both mid term and final...although final was a take home final. Exoect work.
I did not feel that she was as hard as people are saying. I have always been horrible in math and I managed to get an A in her class. She gave us a take home final. Just do the homework and go to class and you will do fine. She is a great teacher.
I feel that I've learned more from her than any other teacher I've had in my four years of college.
Great teacher. Do the work she assigns, ask questions if something is unclear, use your grey matter and you'll be fine. Very knowledgeable and inspiring prof.
Competent stats prof, but not the best I've had in terms of explaning mathematical concepts. I felt like most of my peers in the class did not walk away with a great understanding of stats. She is willing to help you a lot. Expect a good deal of work, and she doesn't go easy on the grading.
Hard teacher. This is not an intro class like stated in the description. The first day of class she said that the class is only going to get harder and if you can't keep up, leave. I don't recommend for students that have a hard time with Stats.
371 & 400 during the summer was tough but worth it. Dr. Ben-Zeev is very laid back, but expects a lot from her students. She makes you work for your grade, but it's worth it since you walk away from the class with a whole lot more knowledge than when you walked in. She doesn't want you to just do the work, but to know why you're doing it. Awesome!!

I took this class during the summer and expected it to be a lot harder than it was. She can be intimidating at 1st but it's not as hard as she makes it out to be. She wants all her students to suceed and she's super helpful! I also learned that the T.A. makes all the difference in the class by reinforcing/explaining the material. HW, midterm, final
Tried to obtain office hours as office hours with her are by appointment only, but gave up on trying to get a response to email!
She was on point at the start. Towards the end of the semester she had her TA's teach the class which was very boring and she spent 2 classes (class was once a week) teaching people how to write a paper. Its upper division!
I love Talia, she is an awesome person and a great teacher. Getting to know her on a personal level is a must cause she is so nice and a great teacher to get to know.
She was dedicated to her work, and was very passionate about the subject matter...her office hours sucked cause they only give her a couple of hours a week....
She is a good professor. Taking her Cognitive Psychology class was a great experience for me. I recommend anyone to take her class.
Don't let her scare you off--the class was a lot of fun--lots of good energy. A nice break from seminars...as i tried to say before, Dr. Ben Zeev is brilliant, and a brilliant teacher. She will make you think better (unless, perhaps, if you're "on the fence"). Due to censorship, I will leave it at I envy anyone getting to experience the class and/or Dr. Ben Zeev for the first time. She is truly professional--a FINE!!! teacher. Very FINE indeed.
Don’t be intimidated—but don’t take her lightly! Break the rules, ain’t no Monty gonna open any more doors. And, God forbid should you try and pull a fast one, even Tantric deities won’t be able to save you. But if you’re prompt, prepared, and wear clean clothing, you’ll likely not only survive the course but will benefit immensely from Ben-Zeev’s superb teaching.
Hands down, one of the finest professors in the institution of higher learning.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is one of the most excellent professors I have ever had. Inspirational, clear, detailed, and fair, he makes a dry math subject real and actually interesting. I reccommend this professor to anyone who cares about learning.
Very interesting class. Go to class take notes...and try your best...
Excellent Prof., I really enjoyed his class, really keeps you on your toes so to speak, but keeps you interested and is very challenging. Hope to take him again !!
Educated, personable and funny as hell.
This professor is very hard. On the exams, the questions are so different than the homeworks and you get confused. I failed this class and I am never going to take this professor again. Don't take him if you think you can't take a challenge because he will challange you.
The man is incredible.
I wish he taught more classes. I think I've taken all the classes he has to offer! He is hard, but he makes the challenge fun. I really feel like I've learned something.
This professor is too hard. He will challenge you and if you don't think you could take a challenge, don't take him. The exams are super hard and the final is even harder. I failed this class and I'm never going to take him again
He's a pretty smart teacher. You will be challenged. There are no multiple choice tests, only essay tests. Also there are group presentations worth 30% of your grade. He cares about what you are learning in his class. This was the hardest psychology class that I have ever taken. It's Cognitive Boot Camp. Also, he's very liberal in his views.
Very challenging but also very interesting. . .You get the feeling you are in the class of a very gifted individual.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life. His class was by no means easy BUT I learned a great deal about stats and myself in the process!!! If you are willing to put in the effort the pay off is so worth it! Amazing man, amazing professor, amazing class!
1st day he tries to scare everyone into thinking it's a torturous class. But he's not that bad. An expert in his field & helpful if you ask. IF the class shows dedication he gives the essay questions 1 week in advance. Attendance is not mandatory, but a must if you want to pass. Test questions covered IN CLASS. Confusing subject, AMAZING teacher
This prof likes people that are outgoing and not afraid to speak up (as long as they have something relatively intelligent or funny to say). He can at times be condescending and impatient with students who do not understand things right away. He is not afraid to show favoritism and regularly meets with students off-campus.
His lectures are never boring, don't be late, and never talk during lecture-he gets very testy. He can be rude if you ask him a question-save them for your T.A. I didn't think the class was very hard, but I also had a great Lab T.A. (sanders) I learned more in lab than in lecture. Open book/note exams. Not bad.
Very intelligent and engaging professor with impressive command over statistics and the classroom. Holds his class to a very high standard and as a result, is quite difficult. Thankfully, he has great TA's.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is AMAZING!He makes a dry math subject so easy to understand. He is very helpful if you come to office hrs.Come to class, don't be late and you'll get an A if you do a little out of class work. You won't regret taking him!
I absolutely despise this professor! He's so mean and rude. I don't care how smart he is, his attitude makes the class a living hell. STAY AWAY!!!
Dr. Ben-Zeev is the best teacher I've ever had. I took him for Stats and Cognitive Psychology. Cognitive was very challenging, but I loved it and got an A. Many people are intimidated, but don't be. Go to his office hours, get to know him, he ROCKS! I wish he taught more classes so I could take more.I love love love him!
Dr. Ben-Zeev is probably one of the best professors in the Psychology department. He is a brilliant lecturer and can make even the most math shy excited about statistics. That is some serious skill. He will challenge you, but it is out of respect for your abilities. He eases up where needed. Don't be late to class - it's his one pet peeve .
ben-zeev posted a note on his office door telling people not to even knock or come in unless it's his office hours or they have an appointment. not to even knock? how arrogant, conceited, and selfish do you have to be to post a sign like that? aren't you suppoed to be available to your students? i'm sick of his arrogant attitude and his favoritism!
Over the course of this semester I have lost a great deal of respect for Dr. Ben-Zeev. I have taken other classes from him and found him to be helpful and kind. My experience of him in this class has been far from either of those things. After taking stats with him I would have recommended him to almost anyone. Now, I would not recommend him at all
His class can be quite difficult at times but he's a nice person and his lectures are always relavent. I'm not sure why someone felt the need to post such unpleasant reviews about him earlier. His T.A.'s (Sunny and Sanders) have been very helpful and it's great to be able to come and get help at different times during the week.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is the best professor I've ever had. He is extremely passionate about teaching and honestly cares about his students. I have had the honor and privilege of working with him personally and while he is extremely demanding, it has been the most rewarding experience of my academic career.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is a man of amazing intelligence, which I think can be very intimidating to his students at times (especially if you have never taken a class with him) but stick it out and you will be guaranteed to learn a great deal about your abilities to push your limits and about an interesting subject.
Nice guy. Lectures are interesting. He knows his stuff well. Overall good, however, he grades extremely HARD! Even though some of the pop quizzes are open note, it's still hard if you did not take down the right notes. And he speaks very fast, and does not repeat, very hard to take note. Recommended for those really into Psychology.
Dr. Ben-Zeev is very intelligent, and knows his subject(s) extremely well. His classes are challenging, but worth your time if you are interested in the topic covered. Not a good idea to take his class unless you are a psych major. Take strong notes, and ask clarification questions, and work with his TA's if you can.
Dr. Ben-Zeev may know his stuff, but he can teach in a way that is useful and meaningful to his students he is NOT doing his job as a professor. There is a difference between having discomfort with the material and not being able to comprehend it at all because he gets you in so far over your head you get lost. I hope he eases up on the next class.
not an interesting class. tough exams, boring lectures. TAs taught a few classes which were totally useless. i did not get much out of this class. take it only if you have to.i wouldnt recommend it at all.
This is an extremely challenging class, but you learn from experience and you really have to push yourself to pass. A lot of people complain because it's hard, but it is well worth the effort and the contribution to your knowledge is infinite. Dr. Ben-Zeev knows his stuff so LISTEN UP!
Dr. Ben-Zeev is amazing. He is a hard-ass, but he knows his stuff and he cares. Totally positive, fair, accommodating, supportive, and then some. I had him for Cognitive psych and now I'm back for psy stats. He's still tough, but still great
He expects a lot out of his students and he loves challenging them, which makes his classes intense but totally worth it. He rocks!!
Class is difficult and he expects a lot of his class. As long as you go to class and skim the book you should do fine. His tests are essay, and as long as you prepare you'll be fine! Don't take this professor if you don't like to go to class or study, you will not do well.
I loved and hated him. He expects a lot and delivers as well. Brilliant, passionate, and hard as nails. Summer Research Methods was total boot camp. Required tons of reading (research articles) and writing, plus a group project.
Cognitive psychology with Dr. Ben-Zeev was an interesting class. He talks fast, but shows mastery and enthusiasm in the subject. Hard class. I would recommend taking Ben-Zeev if you're a psych major.
Dr. Ben-Zeev teaches in a way that requires students to really think about the subject. I took his stats class in the summer so the class size was small and he encouraged class participation. The homework is a little challenging but his TA's are there to help you through. He is incredibly intelligent and i think he is an excellent professor!
Dr. Ben-Zeev shows expertise and enthusiasm for psychology. His class is hard; the material is difficult and he sometimes has to go over it quickly. The exams are essay style, but he gives you questions beforehand and picks one at random. Attendance is mandatory and counts as part of your grade. I recommend Dr. Ben-Zeev to majors.
Do not come to class late (he will lock you out) and do not go to class unless you plan on using your brain. He makes you think and challenges you to be better than average. The bad reviews here are from those that REALLY DON'T WANT TO PUT IN THE HUGE EFFORT THAT IS NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN THIS STATS CLASS. Ben-Zeev is the BEST if you want to LEARN.
The content of this course is interesting, and Dr. Ben-Zeev is definitely intelligent, but he gets sidetracked too often. He is arrogant and expects a lot from his students. Sadly the TA's are no help at all!! I don't even know how they got the job, but if you pay attention and do your work you can potentially learn a lot and do well.
I just took this class for Summer session and Ben-Zeev was very clear in what he expected from you as a student & what kind of work you would have to put into the class. It was an accelerated version of the class so it was a lot to learn and I felt he did a great job teaching the subject matter and his TA's were very helpful.I recommend taking him!
Math is my WORST subject and I dreaded having to take this class. I put a TON of work and effort into the class and came out with an A. I would recomend him, he is super clear and he has a great set of friendly TAs :)
I took Ben Zeev b/c I read in previous reviews that he was difficult but excellent...both which are true. You have too put in the work, but if you go to class and do homework you'll do great. I got an A...so it's possible=). Go to office hours if you're confused, Ben Zeev is really helpful. Lann is the best T.A. (talk to her) Good luck!
Dr. Ben-Zeev is an amazing and brilliant teacher. He is totally approachable, so if you have problems, see him in his office! He is a no nonsense guy though, so put forth your best effort, and don?t mess around. Don?t be late to his class, either! A great guy, and amazing teacher, he helped me immensely to succeed in the psych program.
Dr. Ben Zeev is an excellent professor. Don't be fooled by his crunchy exterior, he is a total softy on the inside. I highly advise that you utilize office hours because he is a great resource. Cognitive is hard. It just is. Work hard and you'll do fine. He's great for stats, too. His dog Amos is also very knowledgeable.
When I was in this class, I hated it. Now thinking back, this class really taught me a lot and I'm glad I took it. His teaching style is different so the class was challenging, it takes a lot of effort to score good on his exams. As a professor I would recommend, but only to students that are serious with school (slackers beware).
The TA's taught the entire course and every wk he left after ~45 min. Very interesting teacher, I want to take his other courses, but I was very disappointed in how he taught stats. That being said however, it was nice to get a B on the midterm, BOMB the final, and end up with a B+ in the class
If you want to learn more than formulas and calculations for psychological statistics I recommend Dr. Ben-Zeev. Hopefully you are intrinsicly motivated to work hard, because he will challenge you to think outside the box. This is definitely applied statistics! You will walk away with a deeper understanding of statistics. Take this class seriously!
Easy teacher. Witty and fun. His test are written open note and book. He drops your lowest test and offers 5 points extra credit.
Very interesting class!! Dr. Ben- Zeev is a master of cognitive psychology!! If you want to learn something new take his class!!
TA taught most of the class and they were only one semester ahead. The standard of the class was quite low, which meant that it was an easy A. I learned some, but I think if Ben-Zeev would have actually held the entire lecture, more knowledge would have come across.
Ben-Zeev turned me into a math nerd! I used to hate math and now I am a math tutor and looking forward to taking intermediate statistics!
Dr. Ben-Zeev is one of the best professors I've ever met at SFSU. He is smart and cares about his students. If you attend class and do extra credits, you can easily get an A. If you are psych major, take his cognitive psychology class.
Took his summer session research methods class and it was intense and tons of work. Mostly read articles then worked on a group research study but it was alot of work. He was very kind and helpful and got a grade higher than I expected
This class was tough but not impossible. I was so thankful for my TA. He made everything clear in lab that I couldn't understand in lecture because sometimes Ben-zeev made it too intimidating to ask questions. Do not try to miss class, Study hard, do all homework, and you will easily get an B or A.
Awesome professor :) Makes statistics very easy to understand, and presents the material in a very clear manner. Very nice and encouraging.
He has been probably the best professor I have had at SFSU. Really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Clearly cut course with instructions all laid out. T.A.s are also amazing and making the material really easy to understand.
Dr. Ben Zeev is a great professor and is obviously very knowledgeable when it comes to the subjects covered. I have always been awful at math, so having the separate lablecture was a major help. Participation is mandatory and can easily alter your grade so make sure you're there. TA's are a huge help in this course so get familiar.
Exams are tough!
Dr. Ben-Zeev really cares about his students and your success in his class. Utilize your resources and meet with him during office hours. He wouldn't give you the answer but will make you think about the concepts in class so that you can fully understand it yourself without him telling you. Amazing and inspiring lectures.
Ben-Zeev is a great educator! Very understanding and inspirational teacher! There's 6 easy quizzes based on reading, midterm, &final. At the beginning of the class he said he was teaching the class as if it were a grad class. I almost decided to drop. Glad I didnt cause I learned a lot about the class & myself. Definitely pushes his students!!!!
Heres so advice do not take this professor. He is the worst teacher at SFSU. He doesnt care about anyone or anything I didnt learn anything. Biggest waste of time.
Dr. Ben-Zeev cares about his students. He will reach out as long as you make the same effort in reaching out and he will meet you in the middle. His personal story is inspiring and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He did not get to where he is without knowledge !
The professor is nice but I don't like how the grade is. One TA will give you a higher grade than the other. For example, for a quiz I received a 1.5/3 and this other student received a 3/3 when the answer were almost the same. I don't understand why. I wouldn't it taken this class, but I needed it to graduate.
This class was interested, but theyve totally mess up my grades. The TAs dont give fair grading. One gives you a better grade than the other one, just depends who is grading the quiz/paper. The professor is nice but at the same time makes you feel stupid if you dont write what he wants. Hello, were still learning.
I look Dr. Ben-Zeev's 371 course for SUMMER 2019, so it was much faster than a regular semester. Weekly homework and quizzes. Ben-Zeev and the TAs did not want us to fail and acted as resources for students. Allowed notes and textbook for the final.
If you take this class be ready to feel dumb. Dr. Ben-Zeev gives long confusing answers to questions & sometimes just looks at you like youre crazy. Didnt learn much, but definitely felt embarrassed to ask questions and lost sometimes. If you dont say what he wants to hear, your voice doesnt matter & hes not afraid to hurt feeling. AVOID HIM!
In short, avoid him. I took his class during COVID. He doesn't respect that we are busy, will constantly take class time to brag about himself, will cut you off when you're talking and will make you feel dumb. Lots of passive aggressiveness and unnecessary attitude. Seems very childish for a professor. I was excited to learn, but he ruined it.
I knew this class was gonna be some bs when he sent this long ass email a few weeks before the sem started about criteria to stay enrolled in his class. Doesnt record lectures, randomly calls on students, and assigns dull and dry articles for us to read. Basically he teaches this class like a graduate course so hes always talking in academes.
I had to take him for a requirement and he expects almost too much out of students and is really critical and quite honestly mean if you are wrong or don't know the answer. All his classes are entry level but he expects you to be as versed as he is and makes you feel so dumb if you arent understanding. Only take if you like crying after class
Prof. Ben-Zeev isn't your average lecturer. He wants you to learn and earn your grade by proving your abilities. Along with PSY300 Ive also taken his cognitive science class. His teaching style may be perceived as harsh but its intended to keep you focused and ensure you actually get something out of the class. Hard work will pay off.
He openly teaches this class at grad level which shouldn't even be allowed. Its an unrealistic expectation for students who work 2 jobs on top of other classes that don't plan to attend grad school. Also requires all online students to own a desk at home and work with the camera on which is discriminatory of their economic status
Already in the first couple of weeks it became clear that he had a very particular point of view, approach and plainly a specific agenda that he was ruthlessly pursuing. Even for SFSU, his activism for the extreme positions in the name of social equity and a general belittling attitude towards everything normal was simply distasteful.
The worst class ever!!! The lecture content and assingments made no sense. Spare yourself and consider taking a different class! Not worth the headache!
Thesis data is required for class! Class was online and on Friday mornings. Follow the rules and instructions of the syllabus for assignments. First is a "ted talk" with NO slides. Then you present the introduction, method, results, and discussion of your thesis. It's a challenge to balance working on your thesis and preparing the presentations.
They always took the time to assure me that my reasoning was headed in the right direction. I had a lot of anxiety because the exams were written response with exact word limits. There was no room for circular logic. They required a very thorough understanding of the material.
Very difficult class, very confusing lecture content, and the entire course is graded only two assignments: a midterm and final exam. The prof doesn't even hold office hours or respond to emails, so if you're out of luck if you need extra help with the material. If you really want to take a cognitive psych class, choose a different prof!
Only two tests determine your final grade: the midterm and final. This class that was supposed to be introductory has absolutely so much grad-level content to read and watch. Do not take this class, he grades very harshly. Answers for the multiple-choice final were confusing. What do you mean "2 but sometimes 5?" Not clear or concise.
Never answered emails. Lectures were confusing. Midterm and final were graded heavily. Expect to fail the course if you don't ace the midterm and final: those are the only things in the grade book.
Challenging but inspiring course. Grades come from two exams and much of the material is from studies. If you engage, you'll build a strong foundation in cognitive psychology. Highly recommended for students planning on grad school or serious about research. Be prepared to be transformed after going through the modules. You've been warned.
This man literally only bragged about himself in his lectures, hardly read and responded to emails, and to top everything off, your grade will be determined by only the Midterm Exam and Final exam. If you can avoid taking this course, you should.
