Before I quitted from his "Housing Project" class I spent 90% of my time doing graphic design. We spent so much time just drawing that there wasn't time to think or to design. As a consequence the level of the project was poor. We were free labor for him. You pay almost CAD 15000/year to maintain his reputation before the cities he works for.

These students told us that when u ask for a letter of reference, Avi asks u 2 write a letter of reference in return which he edits and revises himself.

The best professor I've had at McGill. So intelligent and just listening to him talk about housing and cities is fascinating. Fair grader and I enjoy that the class is focused on open-ended projects rather than tests. I wish I could take him for more classes.

The first real architectural studio I took in Mcgill. Amazing studio and amazing prof! Pro. Avi is very organized and gives us a clear weekly plan and submission instructions. We learn a lot and it is a very good pre-course for later on studios. He truly gives his warm and kind care to every student. Don't worry, it is very fairly graded.

He's amazing and I wish I could take his class again. He's brilliant, has a wealth of experience in the field, and is very caring about every single student. It was the only course I've ever taken where I never stressed about it while learning so much. He's a gem and we have to protect him at all costs.

This was a fun class to just go to and listen to without constantly having the thought in the back of your mind that the info you are learning will be on a test. For the whole term, there are only two assignments that are done in teams and that are given well in advance, letting students fit the work into their schedules. I recommend.

Great class! Definitely recommend. Lectures are repetitive and surface level. If you really want to learn in depth about this topic, you won't get that from Avi. His requirements for projects are vague but looks for certain things - check in at office hours and you'll do well.

Absolutely amazing class! Took it as an undergrad majoring in Urban Studies and was a bit apprehensive because of it being an upper-year course, but Prof. Friedman's lectures were easy to follow, super interesting, and great starting points for me in developing an interest in ecological sustainability in architecture and planning. 100% recommend!

Prof is nice/interesting but I didn't find any of the concepts to be revolutionary, which surprised me as an undergrad student. He's sweet and willing to talk about ideas and assignments. No exams, just two group essays and presentations. I think the class ambiance was nice but a bit slow-paced, I've fallen asleep more times than i can count
