Funny, flexible teaching style. I would take her again. Delays handing back work
Awesome personality, Very intelligent, Lots of work! (But all worth it)
Kind of disorganized, goes off on tangents. Papers and readings are typical.
lack of respect for students, though very smart. tangents. will avoid her
Very bright. Often unclear with directions, but will definitely work with you.
Very friendly, easy to work with. Flighty, but very sharp. Returns work promptly.
Her personality makes class worth going to but will often go on tangents.
Great prof; very excitable. Gives great input and challenges students.Work hard
She is a very smart prof. Knows her stuff++++ Lots of work, but she is fun.
eccentric, halarious. expects a lot but makes you want to please her.

very hard class but very challenging, only class worth the money spent

This prof. is very different yet, funny. U may question her judgement.
hyper-active, fun, HARD, a lot of work
She could talk for 80 hrs straight if you let her-rips your papers apart
sparadic thinking can't stay with point if life depended on it

Know MLA format, be prepared for TONS of reading, take credit/nocredit if U can.
Crazy woman, knows her stuff, grades hard, communicate with her & you'll be fine
As long as you do the readings, you will be slightly aware of what's going on
avis rules! always understanding. she is slightly batty but hilarious and w/ it.
good but expects a lot - tons of daily reading
quality prof

AMAZING! SO KNOWLEDGEABLE! THE BEST!
tough to follow, tough on papers, but funny
HARD, crazy, she rambles about nothing, hard to keep up with.. talks too fast
Can't stay on topic. A LOT of reading. You can't be involved in anything else.

she means well, but she can't stay on topic.
best prof i've ever had, hard, but understanding. talkative.
fun, hilarious, grades hard on essays, lots of reading

CRAZY, way off topic sometimes, but can be entertaining to watch.
Professor Hewitt is a wealth of knowledge. She only wants you to succeed
crazy, hard to follow, unwilling to work with mistakes
realy quirky and funny. Lots of reading but you can cut corners

great, really cares about your success, takes lit seriously. funny!!
has lots to say - struggles with staying on topic to get points across. bad.

Have this Prof. now and find her quite interesting. She sure knows her stuff. Always professional but friendly too. She does grade hard but not ridiculously. Glad I had her.
The cutest lady ever! Always makes you laugh and is 100% willing to help if you ask. Very personable and extremely knowledgable. I'm very glad I had her.

Crazy, unclear, I get dizy just watching her lecture. Struggles to say what she wants...confuzing
GREAT professor! She's able to pick on herself which really lightens up the environment. She's very smart and willing to help IF YOU ASK HER. Take responsibility for yourself and ask for help if you need it! I would absolutely take her again.
Nice, but hard grader. Knows a lot and is funny.
I love her. She is the sweetest and cutest person. She likes to talk but is very encouraging of your comments. Essays are a breeze if you have her look over it before you turn it in.
She's a sweet woman, good teacher, really cares about her students. She makes class fun, a little wild and crazy but not confusing or disorganized. She's great!
Great professor! Tough grader, but makes class fun. Loves to laugh and tell jokes. One of the most genuinely nice people you will ever meet. Stick with her, it's worth it.
I love Professor Hewitt so much that I signed up for another of her classes. She is a wonderful woman who really loves her subject, and is very knowledgeable as well.
The hardest english class i ever took. I love her as a person, but she is a very hard grader. Must read your text book becuase she gets off track in class and runs out of time to finish discussing readings in class.
Very nice lady. Talks a lot though, sometimes in circles. Will help you if you ask. Final is extremely difficult though.
Very smart and funny. A great person but grades papers very hard and the exam was a little on the tough side. You learn a lot and she doesn't give quizzes which is a bonus.
I love this woman. She's one of the best professors on campus. She does grade papers tough, but you get to revise them. She is inspirational.
Loved this professor. She is tough, but tough love is always the best.
This woman is a hoot! Love her! I wish I could take all of my english classes from her.
Wonderfully nice woman. Can get a tad irritating when she's assigning a lot of reading or not making any sense. Tests are sort of goofy; talk to her about papers.
Stick with her and she will stick with you. You must do the readings. She loves it when you speak up in class. She grades papers tough, but if you have original ideas, she loves them. She loves quotes in papers too!
She is very sparatic on likes to jump from topic to topic. Takes too much time getting to her main point. Hard grader on papers, but she knows her literature, thats for sure.
Hewitt is a great teacher who absolutly knows her stuff..yes, yes! She is a hard grader on papers, but is more than willing to help you with your papers and give you extensions. Her finals are killers though, but you are very well prepared for them.
Knowlegeable, yet unnervingly unsure of herself...wants students to validate her opinions and gets defensive if you propose something contrary. She isn't good about giving you time. Ex: we were given 2 min for evaluations. Avoid if possible.
She is a great prof! Her lectures are fun and engaging, she always makes time to discuss papers or ideas or papers, and takes a genuine interest in the lives of her students. She is funny too.
I REALLY DON'T EVEN KNOW THIS WOMAN, BUT FEEL AS IF I DO. YOU SEE, I AM A PARENT OF A GVSU STUDENT WHOM HAS BEEN INSPIRED BY THIS GRAND LADY. SHE NOT ONLY TAKES A INTEREST IN THEIR INTERESTS, BUT ALSO ENCOURAGES THEM TO PURSUE THEIR LIVES.
I love this prof even though she can be a little disorganized.
Best teacher I've had in my life. Nicest woman ever. Very intelligent. Thorough grader on papers. Filled with comments so you learn how to write a better paper. On the weekends you'll wish it was Monday so you could go to her class.
Awesome professor! Very intelligent and helpful. She is willing to go out of her way to help you (meet with her about all of your papers) Makes boring literature very exciting! Take her if you can!!!!
Very helpful! If you want an A on your papers you need to meet with her, multiple times, she helps sooooooo much. I got A's on both papers because of that. Final exam is impossible! 50 quotes from all the text we have read, need to identify and summarize!
There are a lot of readings and even though she knows her material well, she is all over the place and it's sooo hard to take notes and figure out what her point is. She grades hard on papers and her final is the worst one i've ever taken...all quotes!
I would take her again! She didn't grade papers as hard as I had heard (just make sure your grammar and machanics are good). Go to class, read all the texts, put some effort into learning authors and titles and the final is easy.
Do Not Take Her!!! She is the worst prof I have ever had.She made us read 2 novels and 18 stories (6 wk sum class)all from one author b/c she likes her and is a member of the author's fan club. The author sucked! She was not very knowledgeable at all!!
Avis is the most vibrant and free spirited professor I have ever had. Highly intellegent and fun!!! I would recommend her class to anyone.
All the people who have complained apparently think that Prof Hewitt should have students read one-page stories about rainbows and kittens. If you read the stories assigned and show up to class, then you'll do fine on the final quote exam (I promise).
Avis is one of a kind. She's super nice and treats students like people with brains. Must really care about the material to do well.
She is very kind, caring, extremely knowledgable, and hilarious! Will take late papers. Gives awesome feedback. I love her!
Very funny and unique. She can be confusing sometimes but makes every class interesting. You do have to do a lot of reading and writing but it's expected with an honors class.
Avis' knowledge of F. O'Conner is astouding. Very nice, though self-depricating. She mailed articles and corrected papers to us so we could have them earlier than our once-a-week class permitted. Presented opportunities for professional conferences and publication. Great reading list! (Am. lit.)
Avis is so much fun to take. She gets the class talking and is very animated. It would be hard to not like her. She'll have you laughing with her "mmhmmm"s and her "ooohhhhhh, yes!"s!! I loved taking Avis!!!
Probably the most helpful professor I've ever had. She is very bright, well-informed and encouraging, and she provides extremely thorough feedback on papers. She goes out of her way to really mentor students and is just overall a wonderful person.
I took as many classes with this woman as possible.Capstone was amazing.F.O'Conner was a great author to study.Avis will keep you guessing the entire time, never a dull moment. This woman is great, she will help you with your papers (not just for her class). She inspired me to be an English teacher.
So so funny!! She's very entertaining, it makes it easy to show up to all the classes (which is very important in order to pass). There are 3 (5pg) papers and a quote final. The papers were kind of dreadfull and I thought she was a pretty tough grader but I would take her again.
Great prof...! Will take more classes again! Somewhat challenging, but it was an honors couse.
Hewitt is a funny prof. She makes the class a lot of fun with her corny jokes! The papers are a little difficult to write bc we chose whatever story and whatever we want to write on (no direction). The final is a quote final .. not easy!
Avis is absolutely hilarious, but her class was slightly challenging. I'm not going to lie, although I am an English major, these Brit Lit and American Lit classes bore me to pieces. She defintiely keeps your attention and makes you laugh, but her papers are hard (no guidelines) and the final is tough too. She's fun, but challenging.
She is very knowledgable about the material, but she tries to cover too much in a 15-week class. Rambles on about things too long and is condescending with different opinions than her own.
She is definitely an interesting professor. She really cares about her students but tends to be slightly unclear and confusing at times. Boy does she know her material, though. She is definitely funny; be sure to meet with her to clear up any confusion-she tends to be much more clear when not in front of an entire classroom!
What a sweetheart! I loved this prof and her class. She's not as challenging as other people are making her sound. Extremely helpful, nice, and funny.
Best English prof I have had. She is brilliant and will teach and help you a whole lot if you only ask.
Prof. Hewitt is SO funny. She can be very opinionated at times, but class is enjoyable and she knows her stuff. Easy, too!
Avis is a wonderful teacher but does get off topic a lot. She arrives to class 3-5 minutes late everyday and then will talk 5 minutes past the end of class. Her exams are usually matching the title of story with a quote from the story. Can be difficult if you don't keep up on your reading.
She's a nice prof, but I got nothing out of the class. Discussions are very confusing and she tends to go off topic...a lot. We only had to do 2 papers though, so that wasn't bad. The final was quote identification and was really hard.
Great professor, but she makes you work hard. You'll get an A if you deserve it, but you won't get one by accident! She's a wonderful lady an dvery knowledgable.
She is very intimidating, she often goes on and on about authors she likes and shows definite bias towards certain authors and ideas. Although she is passionate about literature, she takes it too far sometimes and has told students their opinions were wrong.
Prof. Hewitt is kinda crazy, but she's a good professor. She often strays off topic and we usually get through half of what we planned on doing in a given class period. She's knowledgeable, but opinionated. Very entertaining! Semi-hard grader for papers, but not too bad. I'd recommend her!!
Avis Hewitt is by far the WORST professor I've ever had - and I'm a senior. Her directions are never clear, when you go for help she just confuses you more, she grades according to her opinions, her tests are inexcusably difficult and paper grading can take more than 3 weeks! It's completely unacceptable, avoid her at all costs. Waste of time & $.
Best ever. Great Professor. Thanks for all the help!
DO NOT TAKE HER! Her teaching partner is fabulous but she is TERRIBLE! I loved English/Literature before taking her class but now will avoid them at all costs. I took AP/Honors in HS but her class had nothing to do with analysis...her exams are ridiculous, she takes forever to grade papers, and she is confusing as hell...RUN WHILE YOU CAN!
Professor Hewitt is an amazing prof. At first she will probably completely confuse you, but once you understand what she expects from you, the class is fine. Papers are tough and you should do the reading, but she's more than happy to help you out in office hours. Class is ALWAYS interesting and entertaining...she will definitely make you laugh.
She will go down as one of my all time favorite professors. She will butcher your papers, but at least you will get honest feedback that will actually help you in life opposed to an 'easy A'. She is very funny and very 'out-there'. She knows if you have done the readings or not and she does not like people not participating in discussions
Although i find her class quite amusing, she rambles off topic so often that almost no one in the class is following her, and then she expects us to not only comprehend what she just said but to also quickly come up with analytical statements based on that information. She is a terrible person to ask for help, and her exams are very difficult.
Very fun Professor! Her paper prompts and assignments can be confusing at times - as are the first few days of class. She's quite random which makes the class hilarious! She also helps you think deeper into the text. Awesome Prof!
Fun prof. A bit zany, but she knows her stuff. Always back your arguments up with quotes from the book. And if you love Flannery O'Connor, this is definitely the place for you. She's very nice and helpful. I really liked her.
Professor Hewitt is hard to follow at times, and her assignments can be unclear. She is very funny. She's worth taking for the honors sequence because her partner Montagna is awesome.
While her tangents are kind of funny at the beginning of the first semester are funny, they get annoying towards the end of the 2nd semester. She assigns a lot of reading, but she gives options for the essays, being able to choose which books you want to write on. She helps somewhat on papers, but overall, it was a pretty good class.
Kind of a flake but lots of energy and super fun. Keeps assignments rigorous but clear, regimented and steady which offsets her flakiness.
She is a great person but a terrible professor. She is way of topic most of the time and jumps around so much its impossible to take comprehensive notes. She also spends to much time calling people out in class for being a minute late or changing seats. It's either her opinion or you're wrong.
Terrible professor. Funny to watch but impossible to learn from. She doesn't stay on topic long enough to take comprehensive notes and anything that goes against her personal opinion is considered wrong. Spends a lot of time worring about who changed seats and tries to call students out for pointless things. I don't recommend her at all.
Avis is a nice professor, but she's extremely scatter-brained. Its easiest to agree with her opinions when writing papers. Class is very unfocused and often seems pointless, but you do learn. The handbook we used was expensive and we rarely use it in class.
Class was pretty disorganized, due dates constantly changed as did the readings. Grade based on a total of 4 assignments, the first one which we didn't get back until after drop date so we had no idea what our grade was. She calls out students constantly, if you look bored or sleepy. Interrupts discussion for random thoughts that are unrelated.
Brilliant, funny, entertaining, and super-helpful. Talk to her, get to know her, go to her for help, and you'll learn tons.
At first Avis seemed a little bit crazy and it was hard to follow what was going on in class but after spending two semesters in her class I can't help but love her! She is one of the nicest professors at GVSU! Take her! She makes it fun while you're still learning lots. Her quote id exams were difficult but read everything and you will be fine.
I loved Avis as a professor! She talks super fast but is such a cute little lady. As long as you do the assignments and put some work into them, you'll be set! Can't wait to take another class with her in the winter!
I love Avis! She is a very sweet and funny person, but she's a tough grader and very eccentric. You might be frustrated with the way she grades, but my advice is to meet with her and talk! It WILL help! Otherwise, dates got moved back a lot and she was a pretty slow grader. No big deal. Very smart.
Avis is a very sweet person, and it is clear that she means to do well by her students. However, her discussions often don't have a distinct point and her class as a whole is very disorganized. She is a very slow grader and consistently makes religious comments that make students uncomfortable. I don't feel like I've learned anything in her class.
Avis is awesome! She is a funny old lady, though she sometimes comes across a little frazzled and disorganized. Her lectures are interesting and she really likes to hear everyone's opinion, so you must participate. She assigns a few papers.. but bonus: they're only one page long! Can be confusing at times, but just ask and she will always help!
We read four books at a time in her class. She does on long rants about nothing and then right when you stop paying attention she'll mention one thing that is critical. She also brings up her religion often. Oh and if you have a different point of view than her she will continuously slam you in front of the whole class.
Avis is one of the sweetest professors I have ever had. It takes a class or two to get used to her disordered way of thinking; however, she is so knowledgeable that if you pay attention you will learn so much. Overall, she is pretty entertaining and very flexible with assignments. This is my 2nd class with her :)
Hewitt is passionate to a fault. She loves her topic and I respect her for that, but it's difficult to have an opinion in her class. The main issue I had is that she's definitely scattered.
An engaging lecturer, Hewitt is passionate about literature, but can sometimes come off as a little intense and strange. Hard to understand at times.
Loved the class, great professor, very willing to help if you have trouble.
Prof. Hewitt is a very fun-loving professor, but she can tend to be a little ADD in her lectures. She often gets off topic which causes us to get behind. Her assignments are very different than anything I've done: 1 page papers with very little format requirement. We bounce around in the literature very often and it can be a little hard to follow.
Extremely disorganized and we only got one paper back so its impossible to know what your grade is like. She asks lots of confusing questions about the reading that no one had an answer to. Also announced on the day of the final that she lost our final and made us right an essay that no one was prepared for.
Very sweet and knowledgeable professor. She's definitely an acquired taste as far as lectures go. Several times she's gone off topic, which can be quite funny but we fall behind on material. Very few one-page papers but be ready to read a lot. Opinionated and semi-tough grader. Not too sure what I took away from the class but it was okay.
She has a ton of knowledge and loves to share it. Pay attention and do the reading, and note the things she repeats or likes about a text, they will be in on the final. If you enjoy learning about Literature she is great.
I view Avis almost as a grandmother. This woman is hilarious and her lectures never make any sense, but they are just so enjoyable. It's tough to know exactly what she wants, because she never really explains it, but if you email her a question about a paper she will basically write the thesis for you. If you participate often you'll be fine.
Love Avis! At first I was a little unsure of her because she's can be a little overwhelming. You just have to nod along sometimes, but it makes the class interesting. If you put in the effort and follow the criteria, she is a fair grader. Very helpful over email. I would recommend Avis!
Extremely disorganized and unclear. We never knew when things were due, there were no rubrics for grading and criteria was completely unknown, and we could never accomplish all of what she intended in class because she would get very long-winded. Avis is very opinionated and it intimidated people into not expressing their thoughts.
She's an extremely kind woman and very passionate and intelligent about the subject matter. She's a little disorganized, her lectures are often all over the place, but you can still get a lot out of the class. If you like reading and discussing literature, this is perfect. She's super helpful over email as well and if you participate you'll be good
Professor Hewitt is a sweetheart! The class pretty much consists of her lecturing on the stories we read and going on the little tangents about the authors. There is quite a bit of reading but its all pretty interesting. The only grades are 3 critics on stories of your choice and 3 critical analysis's expanding on what we discuss in class.
Avis is a sweetheart and very knowledgable, you can tell she really cares. She's pretty disorganized and all over the place and likes the papers done in an oddly specific way. There's a lot of reading - a short story for every class. Discussions are usually interesting. Not a hard class if you put in the effort - Overall pretty O.K.
Professor Hewitt is a sweet lady, but she is a bit scatterbrained and her lectures are all over the place. She takes forever to grade your papers, and the class is entirely based around her lectures of the short stories. She wants all of the papers written in a strange way, and you have to read them to the class.
I hate giving Hewitt such a low rating, but I feel it necessary. She goes off on tangents. What appears on the surface as quirky and fun quickly becomes distracting. Her individual interests can take precedence over lecture, causing loss in topic focus.
While the content of the course wasn't too bad, the sexist and pseudo-racist comments made at certain novel characters weren't appreciated by this English major. Unfortunately I have to take another of her classes, but I don't look forward to it at all.
She assigns a lot of reading, but not too much for an English major. The real problem lies in her abuse of power. She asks personal questions, fails to turn off her cell phone ringer even during student presentations and final exams, and spends more time focusing on her interests than class content. She's sweet but completely unprofessional
It may not seem like it at first, but Professor Hewitt is a great prof who really knows the material. She is passionate about it, and wants her students to understand. There aren't any tests or quizzes, but there are four papers. They seem intimidating at first, but she's not a super hard grader; just make sure to double check your grammar.
Avis is, by far, one of my favorite professors. She's sweet, kind, and overall understanding. She is willing to move essays and due dates in order for everyone to be as prepared as possible. Make sure you get to know her!
Do NOT take her class. Save yourself the extra ridiculous amount of work for an actual higher level class. If you don'd do the reading you'll be in trouble. She's very unorganized and unclear with her instructions and gave multiple papers and projects the last few weeks of the semester.
Don't take ENG 335 with Hewitt. She does not have good time management. Nothing ever matched the syllabus. Her idea of class discussion is she poses a question and then tries to spin your answer to match her own. The readings were fine for the class. It's a lot of single page papers and two tests matching the stories to quotes from the text.
Values and seeks your opinions and input, so be prepared and read the material. Very flexible and understanding if you are absent, late with a paper, etc. But don't try to take advantage of her, because she ISN'T stupid, just generous. Has a brilliant mind and an amazing knowledge of history, literature, and media. PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!!
Professor Hewitt is the SWEETEST! If I had to describe her in one word, I would say gracious. She is super understanding and cares about each student individually. On top of that, discussions are very interesting and she gives really good insight into the readings. There is a lot of writing and reading, but it's really not too bad.
