Best teacher I have ever had!!
Excellent graduate instructor
Very intelligent, very helpful, excellent professor
No Comments
Obviously passionate about her field, and very knowledgable. She always welcomes students into her office hours to talk about class material or political science in general. Pay attention to everything in class and you'll be fine on tests.
This class was absolutely ridiculous. Everyone failed(a class of over a 100) her first test because it was so hard and she had to drop that test and put percentage into others. Second test was no better. She requires a lot of reading and evidently wants you to remember word for word the books!
She knows her field extremely well but has a very difficult time actually teaching it. I wasn't thrilled with the course and would not reccomend it, nor would I reccomend the professor. Her expectations for the students is ridiculous and her testing methods are just as bad. Take another course.
She is an awesome teacher!! And I learned a lot in her class, regardless of the grade i got
Tests are impossible. Teacher expects you to memorize every detail of every philosopher! Do not recommend this course unless you have plenty of spare time on your hands to reread the readings multiple times.
Simhony is the best! Her class is rigorous but if you pay attention in lectures & do the reading, and also find a study buddy, you'll do fine & come out feeling really smart! Make sure you study past tests & questions, etc. She's a tough cookie but really very kind & wants you to understand, so she's willing to help you out.
if simhony teaches a class--take it with someone else. her tests are ridiculous and her teaching is horrible.
Study in Groups. Ask Questions. Go to Office Hours.

Definitely my favorite undergrad professor. Always encourages discussion amongst the class and wants everyone to think critically. Difficult at first, but she is always willing to work with you. I recommend going to talk to her in her office as much as

She is very knowledgable and interested in teaching. A lot of students would complain she is too biased, but they are the same ones that thought she was a communist. Tests are hard, but subject was complex, so they kinda have to be. Studying in groups helped me. Class was sometimes boring, but it was more due to my classmates that liked to hear themselves talk and debate over anything, then Prof. Simhony.
Loved her class.

She is the best techer and very smart, i really enjoyed her class, though i must admit her class is hard, i still really liked it. I got a B in that class
Great prof.
Tests are all straight forward
Her lectures were more confusing than helpful. She is very hard to understand due to her accent. There is a lot of reading, quizes and tests. Too hard and too much work for a 101 class. The tests consisted of m/c, t/f, matching, and essay. The essay is one question, worth a huge chunk, and you have no heads up of what the question will be.
The subject matter was interesting and the professor always encouraged discussion. The class was much much harder than an average 101 section! The tests are much harder than many upper division classes I've taken. (multiple choice, true-false, matching and essay!) I like Prof. Simhony but the class is overwhelming.
Cool teacher.
Simhony is really passionate and knows a lot about what she is teaching. She can be a little hard to understand sometimes but she posts all her lectures so you can follow along on that. The tests aren't too bad but probably harder than they should be for a 101 class. I learned a lot in her class and I still got an A.
much too hard for a 101 class. i couldnt understand half the things she said due to her heavy french accent. somewhere in there tho i did get the feeling that she knew what she was talking about but i couldnt decipher it.
Dr. Simhony is awesome. She is very helpful. Material is interesting if you are a poli sci major with an interest in theory. Tests can be difficult. Keep up with and understand the readings - they are very important for the exams. She is wonderful, but she wants you to learn, so don't fool around in this clas if you want an A.
This class was one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. Lots of complicated reading materials and the test/quiz questions are the type where all the answers could be the answer but because of one word in the question, it makes it a specific answer... It's hard but I really did learn a lot. It was everything I could do to get a B-.

lots of class participation & reading. tricky multiple choice test. answers all seem right except for one trick phrase she includes. 3 take home essays due w/ test. only 2 pages, but she's very particular of what she wants. and essays are worth pretty much all the test grade. she is a little to over zealous for me.
Absolutely amazing. I almost dropped the class because it was so hard, but I worked my butt off and came out with an A. Her enthusiasm makes you want to go to class and made me change my major to Poli Sci! The class is not for the faint of heart. It is HARD, but it was the most rewarding class I've ever taken. She only counts 5 out of 11 quizzes!
heres the deal: Good teacher, Poor Grader. I learned a lot and she is good at explaining concepts, but the grading is completely arbitrary on the papers(50% of your grade) I and others around me never received any fair grades on the papers we wrote. I worked my butt off for a B (first B at ASU), Good teacher, but only take if your OK with a B
This was my first poli-sci class and I really didn't expect it to be this challenging. Don't get me wrong, she's a very nice lady who cares about her students, but she's a tough grader. I wrote essays that I was sure I would receive an A on and ended up with a C or even sometimes a D. You have to attend class in order to take her pop quizzes.
Simhony is a great lecturer, and if you are a polisci you should take this class. However, her accent is thick so you must pay attention. You must attend class for frequent quizzes. A tough grader, but the TA's will help you out. Not an easy class but a good teacher.
I was in this class for a day and then I desperately started checking online for a spot to open in another section of this class, with a different professor. I couldn't understand 2 words she said the whole time I was there! French accent. I speak a few languages so I generally can understand accents no problem, but not hers!
The tests aren't as bad as everyone on here has said, provided that you show up for class. She puts up a mock exam that gives you a general idea about what will be on the real thing. The only problems I've had in this class have been with the TAs. Unfortunately, RMP doesn't allow profanity, or else I'd elaborate.
WARNING if you have to take POS 210 take it from someone els! Take it from Prof Ball or someone els! The final was 160 questions and we only had 90 mins. The grading is very unfair but I think that?s due to her cocky TA?s. The study guides she gives before tests are a joke and are of no help. She is very hard to understand and lectures are boring
Professor is extremely hard to understand. She is a sweet heart and wants to see her students succeed but with the combination of her horrible TAs and strict grading style, its hard to do well in her classes. I would take someone else if it is available. Study guides for test are useless
This class was a joke. I studied for every test and still didn't do well. The TA's grading style on the essays is ridiculous and makes very little sense. I'm a political science and english major. I advise you to take this course with someone else. I wish I had.
Extremely difficult to understand- takes a lot of concentration and focus to get through a lecture. No powerpoints, just a LOT of talking. Strict, but straightforward and fair. Class was really difficult, but the reading makes all the difference. Lectures are also a hundred times easier to follow if you've done the reading.
Helpful and knowledgeable teacher. VERY difficult to understand and the lectures are hard to sit through, but not mandatory. If you have a good attention span and can discern a thick French accent take her class.
Accent is hard to understand but u get used to it.She has pop quizzes which are difficult.Ended up giving QuizzesExam where u redid every question for a better score.Must attend every lecture & study for the exams but they're not super difficult. The 1st papers the hardest. Go into her and she'll explain what she wants & u can get As on the others.
Great lecturer, very captivating. By the end of the semester I realized that reading the Wootton book was a waste and will lead to more ambiguity. Do the Klosko readings and read her notes. Her multiple choice test questions are built like the LSAT: lots of little traps built in. You must know the material to do well. I read every word and got a B.
Dr. Simhony knows the material very well, and will not hesitate to help you understand. Some of her tactics are strange at times, yet she is one of the best professors (if not the best) I have ever had. She grades TOUGH and it is nearly impossible to get an A in her class...still, she's great.
Passionate, yet extremely boring! Almost impossible to get an A. Tests are detailed, trickey, and confusing. Highly recommend you join a study group! Makes the class much easier since she is hard to understand.
easiest A at asu. she gives weekly quizzes but only counts 5--this semester 5 / 13 were group quizzes so if you showed up for all of them you got full credit. tests come straight out of the reading, mostly multiple choice. she drops questions that most people get wrong, and even gave a make up exam for the first test. easy, easy, class.
Dr. Simhony?s tests are very demanding both essays and multiple choice, they are also very long tests too. Make sure you do the reading and review it every night if you have the time. She is very nice and knowledgeable about political ideologies.
Dr. Simhony is a theororist, so she is very very in-depth. The tests are very hard and she has traps in them. While one answer would work, there may be another answer that would be better. Heavy accent, hard to understand. Does care and is very helpful, but breaks you back with readings. This class is highly time consuming.
Bad accent, horrible note/lecture structure. extremely dry class
Dr. Simhony is knowledgeable, approachable, fair, and thorough. Her accent isn't difficult to understand. Her readings are definitely time-consuming and tests/essays can be REALLY difficult; it's important to ensure you really read and understand the literature. Study groups will help you succeed. She takes the time to learn all students' names.
VERY VERY HARD class. Reading is unattainable to complete, she assigns it like her class is the only one you are taking. Her essays are a trap for messing up your entire grade. I got a B- on what I thought should have been an A paper. Her lectures are very very intense and BORING.
Fairly straight forward teacher. Tells you the exact essay questions she will ask on the test. Her accent makes her a little harder to understand. I wasn't that interested in poly sci courses but I would probably recommend her to a person that has a strong interest in it.
Enjoyed the subject (Citizenship Theory)but lecture and tests were difficult. English is a second language for Simhony so understanding her lectures and written questions takes a lot of decyphering. Reference material is highly academic and intellectual, so you will spend a lot of time figuring out what they and Prof. Simhony are trying to say.
Simhony was a great teacher. Very passionate about what she is teaching. Must do readings and pay attention to lecture. The quizes can be difficult but the essays are fairly straight foreward. Expect to spend time re-reading assigned readings and lecture notes in order to get a good grade. Leaves adequate room to improve grade with extra credit.
This class was difficult, and had a lot of reading. However, I received a very undesirable grade on an essay, and spoke to her about it. She listened to my case, and raised my grade. She pays attention to the discussion board and takes students' suggestions very seriously. That's more than I can say for most professors.
The readings are a breeze if you can set aside an hour a week. Weekly quizzes split hairs like no other, however, though likely due the language differences. In lecture, however, her accent is comprehensible, so no complaints there. Do the reading, talk in class, and write down the quiz questions and you should do great.
I loved this class. I didn't have an interest before but she made it interesting. Her accent is kinda heavy but not horrible. She's also extremely helpful & offers to help with anything she can. More professors can learn something from her. Read the articles, take the small tests & enter a study group- You'll get an A
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Do not take this class. Very hard, alot of readings. She's very nice, but her accent makes it so hard to keep up with her lecture and the notes are not organized. I have all a's except this class I am going to get a C because the tests and quiz's are so confusing.
Prof. Simhony is awesome! I didn't read every week but she goes over everything in depth in class. The quizzes are a little tricky but she curves and drops the lowest ones. Everything online is great. Do a study group if offered, great help and extra credit for the final exam. You get used to the accent. Go to class and be fine!
Simhony teaches primarily upper-division, so inherently her classes aren't going to be easy. That being said, she's very passionate, helpful, and her class is setup for help students succeed. Attendance is not mandatory, although showing up will make the assignments MUCH easier. Extra credit is offered. Slight accent, but it's not too bad.
Darling professor. She has intense patience and gives everyone several chances at quizzes and tests making the class easy. It is an intense theory course which can be a turn off, but despite my deep dislike of theory I loved her class. Also, best hair ever.
She is an excellent Professor. She's very passionate about the course and gives students opportunity to really analyze and discuss the materials given. I would definitely take here again.
If you're not interested in polisci, don't take her classes. For those interested, she is worth it. She has high expectations of you and your responsiblity to read and complete assignments. Have questions about the subject? Just talk to her, she'll do her best to help you understand. Best professor I've ever had in poli sci.
Professor Simhony is absolutely brilliant, and knows the subject very well. She challenges you, and will make you work for the grade you want. Very understanding and flexible regarding personal circumstances. Grade relies heavily on discussion board posts (three of them), which require real effort.
I've taken POS 341 & 346 with Simhony, and she is a great professor. Always insightful, offers feedback, and really wants you to understand what the Authors are trying to say. She's GREAT!
Dr. Simhony doesn't play no games! She is a tough grader, but honest in her evaluation. Expect to read - a lot. In the online courses, she gives out two quizzes each week - a regular quiz and a definition matching. The matching is extremely difficult if you don't understand the concepts. Would recommend if ACTUALLY interested in political theory.
She challenges you to prove your opinion with relevant facts.
Simhony is one of those professors who I love for challenging me. My recommendation to future students would be to take this class with friends because she assigns group work and you do not want to end up with lazy people in your group. Many took her class in groups, and those people had a better understanding because they were not studying alone.
If you pay attention in her class you will succeed. It is a lecture-heavy course but, the lectures answer the quiz and discussion questions. Overall, Mrs. Simhony is a great teacher who works for the students, not the University.
Nice Professor. Was very undering and responded to emails very quickly. The material was a lot and I thought the quizzes were too hard for a lower division course.
She will challenge you to think critically, and make relevant arguments supported by evidence from the assigned readings. Speaking of which, her courses are lecture heavy and demand extensive reading in order to fully grasp the material being discussed. She is by far one of the best profs at ASU. Would recommend if you are passionate about poli sci
Amazing lecturer, really wants you to succeed. Reading every night to prepare for the discussion the next day. Attendance counts towards grade, 2 discussion boards, 2 tests with an optional one to replace lower test score. Explains exactly what she expects of you and if you pay attention and participate, you should get an A.
Amazing person, but as a professor she's terrible. She lectures the entire class period, and her discussion boards are nearly impossible to get a good grade on. I went in to get help on a discussion board, she told me exactly what to write, then gave me a 65%. Tests are difficult as well. She does give extra credit for participation though!
This professor will challenge you, but this is the best "value for the money" class you can take at ASU as a Political Science Major. Do all the reading, participate in class, and participate in the offered weekly study groups. If you do this, not only will you pass, but you will probably get an A. Regardless of the grade, you will learn a ton.
Created a ratemyprofessor account mainly to review Simhony specifically - she is an amazing professor and is by far the most thought-provoking and interesting professor I have taken at ASU. Her lectures are rich and while she can come off as abrasive, she genuinely wants to challenge you to learn. She makes you work for an A, but it is worth it.
Absolutely one of the most transformative teachers I have ever had. Teaches in a socratic style and realy cares about you actually understanding the concept. It is a lot of reading which you have to do if you want to pass, but one of the only classes I have ever taken which truly changed my perceptions of Democracy and the role we as citizens play
This class is super easy to pass. As long as you do the reading and look over the power points you will be fine. You have three quizzes that comprise into one exam each week, and theoretically you could do them open note as they are not proctored (this was an online class). She also will drop your lowest scored exam when calculating your final grad
Her class was challenging, but very worth it. Make sure you take advantage of her office hours. She is a very student focused professor and really wants to challenge you to do your best. Be ready to put in work and you will be rewarded by an insightful class and professor. You need to do the reading before class, but she is super available for help
Definitely, a very nice lady who is very knowledgeable. She teaches at a level that is hard to comprehend and she didn't have a plan when most of the class failed her tests. I learned more from our study group than lectures, although she did try to engage with us. I have never worked so hard for such a mediocre grade. Respectfully regret taking.
Started this class as an elective because I like the subject. I did not expect hours and hours of reading (only, no lecture), and the tests are incredibly difficult. Multiple choice, multiple answer, boatloads of dropdown options, ever-changing expectations per module. Very tough. This is the lowest score I'd ever had at ASU. I withdrew midterm. :(
POS210, tons of reading and the weekly testing is an absurd guessing game. This professor uses their own definitions of words despite asking students to understand the book definition. Would not take again.
Yes, you will read a lot. But, if you utilize the study guides and power points you should do well on the weekly exams - and probably learn a lot, too. The course materials are enjoyable and, more importantly, very current. Professor Simhony provides generous office hours and is a fair grader who is clearly passionate about teaching. 10/10!
Professor Simhony was always a kind and understanding professor and puts a LOT of emphasis on making sure you learn the material in a progressive and natural way. She genuinely cares for her students and goes out of her way to help you if you need it. Her lecture style is very informative and clear to follow, not to mention fascinating.
Lectures are not very helpful, she asks more questions than answers were provided. Digital packet is photo copied so good luck finding the readings and answers in there plus some of the readings were not provided. Nice professor and tried to be helpful although not taking much from this class other than glad to get the 3 credits and get out.
Dr. Simhony is such a sweetheart. She focuses on student success rather than giving out harsh grades. She drops one of our assignments at the end which is such a relief. This class has been pretty difficult for me, but she is very supportive and reachable outside of class. I feel like she cares.
Professor Simhony was one of the most caring instructors I have ever had. Her class is challenging, however she is open to giving points if you can justify your answers. You will learn a lot in her courses and leave feeling knowledgeable on whatever topic she is teaching!
Wonderful woman, so kind and understanding. Yet, her course was challenging. I usually get As straight but I got an A- in this class. The matching terms are really hard.
Prof. Simhony is an outstanding professor. The provided assignment instructions are very clear and are graded fairly. Her comments on submissions make it very clear on how you could improve. The subject material is covered very thoroughly and she highly encourages student discussion. I was genuinely excited to come to class each session.
shes a really good professor. knows hers stuff, is passionate about the topic and overall a good person and teacher. the only problem is the grading system. while it was completely messed up, whats expected of you on certain assignments is not clear. but as long as you show up and do the readings youll be fine.
Dr. Simhony genuinely cares about her students' success and really wants us to understand the material and engage with it critically. The readings are mostly around 10 pages long, and while the writing assignments and tests are challenging, she's always willing to work with students outside of class to support our learning. She's great!
This was an excellent POS elective course. Dr. Simhony didn't just explain the readings but wanted students to engage with the ideas and exercise critical thinking about the topics discussed. The writing assignments weren't an easy A but she gave excellent constructive feedback and she was there to help students succeed. Would highly recommend!
easy class
Lectures can sometimes be drone on and be difficult to follow, but she's overall a nice person with a good sense of humor. Instructions for assignments are clear. Weekly take home quizzes and 3 exams, but many are dropped. In my opinion, very easy A.
I really liked this class and its contents! Dr. Simhony is intelligent and caring and always offers support if needed. There were weekly readings, but she covered them all in class! Quizzes and exams aren't hard as long as you know the material. My only gripe is that the TA graded super harshly sometimes, but Simhony was overall really nice
Professor Simhony is very knowledgeable and does a great job engaging with her students. It's important to come to class having read the chapter she is going to discuss that day. Come to class ready to answer her questions and followup questions. Stay on top of your work and you'll do just fine in this class.
