Very hard, but alright at teaching
Professor Shannon is an awesome teacher! I've learned so much from his class! He really cares about his students understanding the material. He does require weekly assignments but they weren't bad and they really made me think about what the message was in the text. i would highly recommend taking a class from him.
Bro. Shannon is really hard. He is a great lecturer, his classes are very interesting but you'd best know the Book of Mormon really well or you'll be lost when it comes to tests. And I mean you had better know details. He knows how to teach a class but he doesn't know how to write a test. No-one got a good grade on the final because it was so bad.
Interesting during lecture, but his lessons rarely correspond with the information on tests. If you do the work it is not too difficult to do well in this class. The weekly assignments buffer your test grades.
I LOVED THIS CLASS. I was always SO uplifted every day, and there's no busywork, which is awesome. Basically, your grade is determined by daily attendance, a weekly 1-2 page paper, honestly reading for half an hour out of the scriptures daily, the midterm, and the final. He's super funny, and always willing to help you! TAKE IT. :)
Bro. Shannon has so much knowledge about the scriptures. Everyday you walk into class knowing that you're going to walk out uplifted, informed and generally better off than you were before you came. I wish I could take every religion class from him.
His lectures are very interesting and his knowledge for the scriptures incredible. Class mostly based off reading charts papers and ATTENDANCE! But his final for the first half of the Book of Mormon was ridiculous. You had to know EVERY DETAIL. Like names of fathers and stuff..Beware, you have to put up a fight for test curves..I know we did
Hard class, but what did you expect? He knows EVERYTHING. He tells you straight up what he expects from you, but be prepared for a lot of memorization and studying.
I really did not enjoy this class. Brother Shannon doesn't teach you information about the text, he just preaches about Christ and how He saves us all. It's like a 2 hour long sacrament meeting talk. His tests are really hard, as in 100% short answer. Don't take him, there are way better Book of Mormon teachers.
Reading guides for every section thoroughly discussed in class. Test questions are taken directly from them, a review session is held in class the day before the test, and sample essay questions, and topics to know are posted early. 2 midterms and a final, 3 two-page papers, final 7-page paper, quizzes in class (from reading guides). Great guy!
Brother Shannon's class looks tough and time consuming on the syllabus, but once the semester starts it is a cinch. He is extremely lenient on the quizzes and tests. He does give long reading guides, but they are pretty easy to fill out. His class is very spiritual, and you learn so much. Sometimes he allows for late work. He will work with you.
He is positive and lenient with any situation that you bring to him. Good man.
He is an okay professor for the Book of mormon. Weekly quizzes can sometimes trick you. He sometimes will get on a topic and somehow relate it to something that no normal person would make a connection with.
Though he's not a full-time staff member, he's one of the best teachers I had. Be expected to read and fill out reading guides during the entire semester, but if you do that and pay attention in class you will do fin on the quizzes and tests. There's one long paper due, but it's not that difficult. Would definitely take another class by him.
He isn't the worst religion professor ever, but I won't be seen in any of his classes. That was the only class I couldn't get and A. Weird lectures that have no real flow to follow. He does try and he is very lenient with his students.
I loved Dr. Shannon. His tests are semi-difficultBUT all of the questions come from his study guides. Lectures were very interesting and he knows SO much about the New Testament. Quizzes once a week, but he gives you a list of questions that the quizzes will come from. There are 4-5 papers that are worth a lot of your grade, but he grades fairly!
This was my favorite religion class I have ever taken. Dr. Shannon is very intelligent and gives amazing, spiritually uplifting lectures. The weekly quizzes are easy. The tests can be kind of hard, just make sure you study. Only one paper, which he grades pretty liberally. Take pearl of great price from Dr. Shannon! It is life changing!
Let me clarify that the four I gave him for difficulty is only relative to other religion classes. This is one where you need to work to get an A. I luckily got an A-, the average grade was a B. If you remove the outliers with awful grades then the average would still be hovering around a B+. He is a funny and passionate teacher, it just isn't easy
He is SO EXCITED about what he teaches and it's contagious! He brings in artifacts and ancient texts to get students to understand the history of the scriptures they're learning. He takes time to learn all the students' names and is always looking for ways to give extra credit. I can't give enough praise to Dr. Shannon.
I LOVED this class. My favorite religion class at BYU- and this was my last one! Brother Shannon is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this material. He manages to make every single class meaningful. Gives pop quizzes every other class or so, and expands on homework material- you need to attend to do well on tests but they weren't hard.
2-3 hours/week for an A . Kind of felt like we were just surveying random parts of the Bible for most of the class, but at least he's spiritual about it. Study guides are given for quizzes and tests, but can sometimes be a bit confusing and long.
Dr. Shannon is an amazing teacher. He explains the Pearl of Great Price really well and always encourages questions, and discussion. He's very passionate about the scriptures and considerate of everyone's comments. Weekly Quiz. Few tests. He's a great teacher. I recommend him highly.
Dr. Shannon puts great effort into his lectures and is passionate about the scriptures. He encourages questions and doesnt shy away from controversial or difficult topics. There are daily reading assignments, weekly quizzes and papers, and three tests. An inspirational and uplifting class.
Favorite religion class by far! He made me excited to do the reading assignments and attend class. I always had to share with my friends what I had learned that day from his class. You know what to expect on his tests, so it is easy to study for. You will not regret taking Pearl of Great Price from him!
I really enjoyed his lectures and think he's great but this was ridiculously hard for a religion class. Felt like I had everything down and would receive low grades on exams. In class quizzes were near impossible. I've never made less than an A- in any other religion class.
Dr. Shannon is an amazing teacher! Every day you come to class, he makes you feel inspired by the time that you leave. Readings are useful to know the material beforehand. Occasional quizzes in class, but if you do the reading, you can ace them easily. Midterms come with reading guides and if you go over it, it'll be no problem passing the class.
Dr. Shannon is amazing! He teaches the doctrine very clearly. He doesn't usually tell you what will and won't be on the test, but he gives a study guide where all the questions tell what will be on the test. He teaches very thoroughly, and if anyone ever has questions, he takes time to answer those questions then continue with the lesson.
Dr. Shannon is so much fun. He's kind of an odd ball, but in the best ways. He is funny, engaging, and clearly very invested in the gospel as well as the material of this course. This class is easy if you pay attention, take notes, and do the reading guides he provides. Exams are open note and there are even a few extra credit opportunities!
Bro. Shannon is awesome! I have really enjoyed his classes and tbh I was a little worried at first that I wouldn't. His teaching style is different but I came to really like it! He is funny and very intelligent. He is willing to answer any questions and leads most of his discussions based on student comments.
Loved this class, learned a lot! I didn't fill out the reading guides, I think that was why I didn't do stellar. Hes a great teacher. Lots of assignments, lots of reading.
Dr. Shannon is one of a kind and very knowledgeable, but his teaching style and my leaning style did not mesh well. There was more out of class work than most religion classes, and it wasn't very spiritual. There is one (generally) 3-4 page reading guide per class, so for me it was just find the answer and memorize.
Professor Shannon gives some of the best lectures I have ever had in a religion class at BYU. He takes the stories from the scriptures and applies them to our lives in way you would have never thought of. He also really cares about his students and does his best to ensure your success.
Dr. Shannon is a solid professor. Grading criteria couldn't be clearer, and test material comes directly from defined class topics and reading questions. It's an easy A with an hour of work a week. But it's also a really cool class. I've learned a lot from the Pearl of Great Price. Dr. Shannon loves discussion so it's not boring.
Dr. Shannon is a unique, but great, religion professor. His PoGP class has changed how I view the scriptures. There is definitely more of a focus on academia as opposed to spirituality, but he still has his deep moments. It may just be the class, but class discussion seemed dominated by students trying to 1-up each other, so be careful.
LOVED the class! Amazing teacher. He is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Conveys the material so it is easy to understand. Invites student participation in the lectures. Do the homework and you will do great on the exams. Enjoyed his teaching style. I would definitely take another class from this professor.
Amazing in class discussions, he's able to pull from other writings and stuff to bring up things I've never heard in class. Really respectful and acknowledging of different perspectives. I've never had as much acknowledgement and defense of women in any religion class. Really strong spirit in this class, I'd take him again in a heartbeat.
Professor Shannon is really kind and gives great lectures. There is a quiz every week so make sure you do the readings and show up to class. Other than that the work load isn't too bad and all tests (other than the final) are open book open note.
Kind of a goofy guy but it makes the class interesting haha. In all reality, though he's a solid choice. Does a great job bringing the spirit. Make sure you do all the readings and fill out the reading guides.
Professor Shannon is honestly one of the best religion professors at BYU; his class isn't as demanding as many religion classes are, but he still puts in a lot of good effort into his classes and is AWESOME at answering questions about his subject material! I've never been a huge fan of religion classes, but this one felt just right to me!
The papers he assigns are pretty easy. Exams are multiple-choice and short answer, which is kind of annoying but not too difficult. He is a very knowledgable guy and I enjoyed his class a lot.
Oh my heck, this was my favorite religion class I've taken at BYU thus far. Brother Shannon shares all of his knowledge about the scriptures (Pearl of Great Price for this class), gives amazing resources, and the reading is reasonable (about an hour per class period). He always asks thought-provoking questions and bears testimony. You'll love it.
Boring is the best word to describe him. Maybe he is different in person but in my online class he could not keep my attention. The only participation was volunteering to read. He is not a goofball, I never heard him make a joke or even laugh. It was like he was showing off his knowledge and saying "Look how holy I am" Class difficulty was average
Doctor Shannon is what I want from every religion professor at BYU. His discussions were thoughtful and spiritual. There is quite a bit of reading, but if you pay attention and do said readings, you should be able to easily get an A. He is also always available and ready to help with questions. Highly recommend.
Worst class I have ever taken. The lectures were boring and long. Least spiritually edifying religion class I have taken. The quizzes and tests were terrible. You had 5 minutes for every quiz 5-7 questions long and 65 minutes for 76 questions on the final. If you have any amount of test anxiety, try thinking about having 51.3 seconds/question.
Prof. Shannon seems like a really nice guy. I took him online so I think he misinterpreted a lot of my questions, but he was earnest in trying to answer them. He was very accessible outside of class. His tests/quizzes were open book and were pretty easy for me, but not for people who aren't speedreaders.
Dr. Shannon is lowkey my fave religion professor at BYU, definitely more academic than EFY speaker. if you're looking for the next hank smith or john bytheway, dr. shannon might not be your cup of tea. but if you're looking to gain deep scriptural and doctrinal knowledge while being spiritually uplifted and subtly entertained, Dr. Shannon's the guy
Great class with amazing lectures where I learned a lot. However, it did often seem very geared towards students majoring in some type of religious studies and became hard to keep up with all the readings. A couple papers are due throughout the semester but very easy. Tests and final paper are the opposite. Tests are on obscure things and timed.
Fantastic professor. 10/10 would recommend. Very inspiring lectures and engaging intellectually. So long as you do your written responses, read the assigned scriptures, take the reading quizzes, and pay attention in class then you'll do fine. He cares greatly about individual students and values all opinions & questions.
I love this man! Such an amazing class! There were some classes where the spirit was so strong you could almost reach out and touch it. Prof. Shannon answered many of my questions that other religion professors hadnt been able to answer for me. It is a 300 level class, so be expected to do a decent amount reading, but its pretty reasonable.
This was such a bad class. He starts off every class by discussing questions from the reading which takes up half of the time and goes on random rants which don't have anything to do with the material. The readings are long and so boring and don't teach you anything. He never actually answers any of his learning outcomes and is hard to understand
no electronics in class Tons of reading. but really its maybe 2 hours between class. Hes really really good at teaching concepts in class. if you do homework and take notes everything will work out my only complaint is the lack of stuy guide for the midterms and finals. he just kinda says its about everything which sucks
Professor Shannon has a clear love for scripture, and that comes through very clearly in his lectures. There's a lot of stuff that only gets mentioned in lectures, so attending and good note-taking are important, but the lectures are excellent.
Love Dr. Shannon! This ain't your gooey EFY kinda religion class, but that's exactly why I loved it. He has a really great academic yet spiritual approach that made his lectures so interesting. Participation is important but if you do the quizzes, they're pretty much the tests. Really knows ancient scripture and brings a great spirit to class.
Dr. Shannon is great! He knows a lot about the Old Testament and is super passionate about it. He's not always super clear about assignment deadlines and he can get a little sidetracked sometimes, but he cares about his students and wants to help!
This man is THE GOAT. I learned so much intellectually and spiritually. Super easy. Can't recommend this class enough.
I loved this class. Professor Shannon gives amazing lectures that touch on both the intellectual and spiritual. The homework he assigns gives you everything you need to get a good grade on his tests (questions are pulled directly from the homework) and he holds a really helpful review session before the final. I'd definitely recommend Him.
I don't think I've ever had a more religious experience than this class while on BYU campus. He smashed most of my preconceived notions about the New Testament and replaced them with knowledge that increased my understanding of the gospel.
Dr Shannon is incredible! His 392R Survey of the Old Testament class was amazing. He shared incredible insights, and worked each lecture around questions that students had. His excitement is contagious! There are a few easy quizzes based on Bible readings. Great class!!!
Professor Shannon was such an awesome professor. I learned a ton in his class and he always led amazing discussions. I really liked how he didn't just teach from a powerpoint, but rather allowed class to go in the direction of questions people had. He definitely knows his stuff! He is one of my favorite professors and I would definitely recommend!
Not your typical EFY professor - focuses on the doctrine and understanding what the scriptures are saying. Knows 6+ languages. Still extremely caring and accessible. Its really not that much reading compared to a 3 credit class. Just do the reading before each lecture and you'll be fine. It took me about 30 minutes to do the reading.
They didn't have the class option but I took Rel A 392 R and it was the best religion class that I ever took, hands down. I took the class because I wanted to increase the depth of my knowledge. And he literally changed the way I approach religion and how I understand ALL of the scriptures, and this class has legitimately changed my life. TAKE HIM!
This professor is by far one of the best men I've ever met! He is so king and loving and is so willing to explain anything and everything! He luckily put together a book that has all of the readings, guides, questions, this is super helpful and beneficial! There is a quiz a week, but do your readings and don't worry! His testimony alone is worth it
Dr. Shannon is such an amazing professor. For this class, there was a lot of reading. He gives very helpful feedback and is always willing to meet with you to answer questions and explain things you don't understand. I left every class feeling uplifted.
Very knowledgeable professor -- he speaks so fast that some words blend together lol. Expectations for class and assignments are clear and homework is doable. The tests are okay because you can use your notes on some of them. However, I just took my final and there are assignments from almost 2 months ago still not graded... really annoying.
Dr. Shannon is great! Lectures were inspiring and insightful, do pay attention and take good notes because lecture material does appear on the exams. 2-3 questions quizzes once a week, nothing crazy. He does talk very fast when he gets excited about something, but he is aware of this and will slow down if you ask him to.
Lectures were phenomenal. Decent amount of reading, but he compiles all the required readings into one book, which was super clutch. The only thing that was tough was that no electronics are allowed. Do the readings and you'll pass the tests, but the lectures are phenomenal. Dr Shannon is brilliant and has great insights. Would take again.
Dr.Shannon was my favorite professor during my time at BYU, the way he teaches is phenomenal! It's really easy to get an A, he gives you a list of questions and with them the exact verse of scripture that they are found in. You will not regret taking his class, his class is spectacular. Dr.Shannon and the content he presents are as cool as it gets.
Ive never heard a professor talk so fast. But I LOVE this guy. Not the typical cheesy EFY BYU professor. He knows his stuff. OT class was challenging but I actually learned a ton which I feel like I dont normally in religion classes. He just has great lectures and barely any homework. Lowkey such an awkward guy but it really works for him.
Pop quizzes but you get 8/10 just for being there, the questions are usually obvious from the reading. The reading is just in the scriptures for the OT class at least. His lectures are just so great. Part of the class is students asking questions which was great bc the OT can be weird. He helps the OT sound really beautiful actually.
Dr. Shannon rocks!! Take his classes!
His class doesn't overburden you, but it just wasn't quite what I was hoping it to be. His teaching style just isn't my favorite.
Professor Shannon meant well but he wasn't my favorite when it came to teaching style. He assigned tons of readings, expected you to answer 50+ questions for every lecture, and never responds to emails. We never discuss the readings in class, but the midterms are all on the readings. I would personally skip on this class.
0/10 would not recommend
There are incredibly long study guides for every class, about 30-50 questions you're expected to know on the reading, and you *might* have a quiz each class. The only study guide you get for tests is the hundreds of questions from the study guides of every day. For the final, he said "you should know everything we've talked about." Not worth it.
RELA275 Long study guides with pretty useless questions (# of Seripham wings, how many sisters did Nephi have, why was Jacobugath destroyed, ect) for every class. His pop quizzes only once happened on a Monday most were on Wednesdays, and many of them were missed anyway. I will say I learned a lot about the historical context of the Book of Mormon.
I took him for REL A 275, but the tests were not on teaching OR doctrines of the book. He said the cumulative portion of the final was only from previous midterms, but he added extra questions over that area as well. The study guides weren't helpful and it was almost impossible to do well in this class. Do not recommend.
Dr. Shannons a great guy but I would not recommend his class. He was horrible about getting grades in on time. He never grade 1/3 of our quizes and kept making empty promise about how they would be done by next week so you never really knew where your grade was at. The tests were unnecessarily hard and more on random facts from the Book of Mormon.
I loved the lectures! He's an Old Testament scholar so he focused on parts of the Book of Mormon that connect with the OT. I enjoyed the random facts, and that I always felt the Spirit really powerfully. The tests were more like trivia than important gospel principles, but the rest of the assignments were simple. A quirky guy but great class!
I studied the Book of Mormon every single day for 2 years and struggled on these tests. I love his lectures, he's really smart and has great insights. The only problem is those quizzes and tests are more of random facts rather than actual doctrine. Even the open book tests I struggled on while using ChatGPT, the scriptures and Gospel Library.
He's such a great professor! Knows his stuff, and really listens when you ask questions. Fill out the reading guide while you do the readings, the quizzes and test come from those! The tests aren't very hard, he tells you what to study.
Don't take Prof. Shannon. Tests are unclear and he teaches questionable doctrine.
He understands the OT and so lectures were always super interesting. You have a study guide to fill out before class on the reading prep which can get up to 8 pages of questions to answer, so they get pretty lengthy. But you better do them because 70% of the test questions come from these reading guides. exams felt more like random fact questions
If you are looking for an easy religion class, don't take this one. Dr. Shannon knows his stuff but there is a 4-5 page reading guide you need to fill out before every class (as your read 5-15 chapters in the Old Testament....) Takes him forever to grade things and he tests you on obscure details.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class for 3 reasons: 1. His classroom discussions are based 80% on what the students want to discuss. He often failed to adequately cover the learning outcomes we needed to know for the test. 2. His exams are like trivia. 3. Its December and I have ungraded quizzes from September.
