Professor Huelsemeyer is an inspiration for all of his students. Very clear and professional, but most of all helpfull and available at all times.
He is a bit of a disciplinarian, and he wears his pants 3 sizes too tight, then again you would expect no less from a german professor
his background makes him really helpfull in this international politics class. He is cute! and i really enjoy having him.

Tough class,a lot of work but prof is great and helpuful.

This guy enjoys seeing his students fail, and was disappointed when half the class didn't flunk the midterm. Stay away from him! He is a hard marker and constent pop-quizes will kill your grade.
very good teacher. not too bad to look at either
really smart man. Very knowledgeable. He likes people to know hes a tough cookie. his TA is nice but a super tough grader. Cant help but wonder if he is comfy in those extremely toght pants ...
Take his courses! It is worth it. Passionate, clear, brilliant Prof. Pay attention - the lectures make sense and there are no surprises on exams. Best Prof I've ever had. I learned a lot in this class. Also, our class was vidoetaped (helpful!). Enjoy.
He is one of the hardest markers I've had here, single-handedly destroying my GPA. Tries to come across as tough but is quite charming. Unfortunately he promises certain things and then fails to deliver. He knows how to make you think. Regardless of your mark, you will learn a lot in his class.
He knows his subject very well.Interested classes.Mid terms are so easy but pop quizzes may kill your mark.If you like to learn your subject more than having just good grade he is for you.
Great prof, I enjoyed his lectures, and his shameless plugs for his fellow german compatritots, no surprises on his exams, if you are well prepared you will do well.
Poli 305 is incredibly tough but if you keep up with the material you will find it to be a great learning experience. I got an A but worked for it and anyone else can too. Prepare to learn a great deal which will be very usefull in and out of school. Concordia needs more professors like Axel.

I have been at Concordia for 3 and half years. Huelsemeyer is the only teacher that was actually fair in his presentation of the material in the poli sci dept. other profs are so biased in their teaching it's just ridicolous. with axel i can't tell whether he's right wing or left wing and that's a really good thing.
Lectures are monotonous, & talks fast. But has notes & lectures online. He is clear, but class is advanced if u dont know anything about subject. Exams are straightforward, there are popquizes, participation, and 1 paper. The course requires work, have 2 keep up wih readings, you can do well if ur willing to work. Grading is fair.
Cold and inaccessible. I could have received the information he spits out in class with a library card. When I pay my school fees I expect a certain level of services, including being able to talk to my professor and get explanations from him. Doesn’t make the slightest effort to write legibly but asks that you do. Just an example of his arrogance
The class itself wasn't too bad.I found that if you do the readings and especially take good notes you can do well.I think he's a very fair marker. You will get the grade you deserve in this class.I would even say that the marking criteria on the essay was very lenient;put in all the elements he mentions in class and you will get a good mark on it.
Dude, who gave this guy a pepper???!!!! Come ON!!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. THIS TEACHER IS TERRIBLE. HAS TAKEN OVER 1 MONTH TO CORRECT THE FINAL AND STILL HAS NOT RETURNED THE GRADE. MEAN, RUDE, AND INTIMIDATING. IF YOU WANT YOUR GPA TO GO DOWN, SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS, OTHERWISE I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVEN CROSSING THE STREET IF YOU SEE HIM COMING TOWARDS YOU.
Gifted lecturer. Follow his train of thought and the way he guides students though the material via their own questions and you will actually learn the material rather then the typical process of memorize/regurgitate/forget. Be sure to arrive with an open mind and a blank slate. Prof gives you everything you need in class. His notes on the board ar
He is a good prof but you have to go class. Its an easyy class.. just put in key words!
Not a very good prof. It's damn near impossible to take notes with this guy and he just doesn't create an atmosphere where questions or comments are encouraged. Basically you come in and listen to him give some horrible lectures and then learn the material through the textbook. Take Nachfolger to see how a real prof teaches.
Good prof. Only problem was is availability outside of the class, but in class in answers all question clearly. Easy class if you actually take the notes and be in class when he gives the exam question lol. Never answers his e-mails though. better go see him on his office hours or he will not let you in his office. overall great exoerience.
avoid him

very attractive
Huelsemeyer is the type of professor you take if you want to go to grad school and do well. If you wish to cruise towards an easy grade, which seems to be the norms with my fellow undergrads at Concordia don't bother. If you want to learn about Political Economy with a man that has tons of knowledge to give you, take his class.
Typically German. Goes straight to the point/does not turn around/do not give his personal opinion/always objective. Attend each class = never have to read the book. Make recap a the beginning of each lecture. Efficient/effective/Useful: German.
Axel is a great prof. I took 305 with him and I must admit the class is not easy, but if you put in the work you will get good grades. He prepares you for both the midterm and the final. As for the term paper, he gives endless explanations/examples. He is often available to answer questions 1 on 1 in his office and he also answers emails quickly.
GREAT PROF
If you are interested in International - Political - Economy, take this course. It should be mandatory for Poli Sci as it explains how states manage their accounts. The professor is very straight forward and once you understand the sequence of ideas you will understand how states interrelate. Take it.
very interesting, worth taking the class, you will actually learn something!
You have to attend every class and take a lot of notes, but that should be a reality in university anyway. He knows his material extremely well and is open to inquiries and questions both within class and during office hours. An intimidating guy that resulted in one of the best classes I have ever taken.
Really hard to follow if you don't have some prior knowledge about economics.
Can't even put into words how bad this teacher is. You won't learn anything and you wont get a good grade. I got stupider for taking this class with him. He forced us to give him an overall 75 percent rating in the evaluation in order to get a final review.
He's got that "salt of the earth" personality that only comes with real life experience - something that is rare among professors. He knows his stuff, is on point, and if you show up to class and pay attention, your efforts will be reflected in your grade. Rough around the edges at times, overall a good sport.
can tell he is an expert in the field. you can tell he actually cares about the students and how well they do. worth it
While he deserves credit for presenting the class material in an unbiased manner, he talks very fast and is far too hard to follow. Perhaps worst of all are that his paper instructions were very unclear and left most of the class bombarding the TA with dozens of e-mails until the due date. Certainly would not recommend.
Tough but ultimately a very rewarding class. Huelsemeyer is quick, often funny and usually straight to the point. However the essay is made unnecessarily confusing since he does not hand out an outline. Most of the important information is covered in the book's Introduction sections. This class is recommended if you are willing to work hard.
Great prof and great class! He explains very well and makes the class interesting. Readings are very difficult but not important for the exams. Prepares for the midterm, final and paper. Totally recommended!
Cares for students that care about the material. He takes the CON out of Concordia; truly one of the better professors in the dept. as far as ability to teach is concerned. Learned more in his IPE class on inlt law than with the actual intl law class. If you know why you're in university, take him- you will not regret it!
Honestly one of the best profs I've had so far in my 3 years at Concordia !! His course is not easy but very interesting, he is extremely helpful and always available. Only take if you are ready to do the readings and take clear notes in class, ask questions if you have to. Amazing personality and cares about your success!! Highly recommend !
one of the best teachers i have had so far in concordia, super informed about the topic and super nice, not easy but makes the course extremly interesting !!!
I really didn't work hard in this class and yet I got a C. If you go to class and take good notes, you'll probably be fine. Don't be like me and do the readings! If you don't like teachers who cuss a lot, you may want to avoid him cause that's all he does. He's a good person deep down though and he's very helpful and approachable. Recommended.
Really good professor. A very hard class but really really interesting one. I've learn a lot in his class. If you follow the rules and study hard you will enjoy this teacher and the class.
EU politics is the most boring, soul sucking class in poli sci. Axel is a fine teacher, but he is an evil villain. The course textbook is actually the worst. It's the main reason the class sucks. His final is cumulative (Why lord?), but his term paper is fair. Goodluck doing a cumulative final exam 4 days after a 15 page essay is due.
LOVED his class. He knows what he is talking about and makes it easy. He says it every single time: the world is simple. He asks question to put yourself in the "organization" or "state's" shoes to see how you would react and he shows that reality is not far far from how you think. Attend his classes, they are amusing as hell. Loved it
Great Prof! i took his class and was surprised because he had such low ratings. He a great prof funny too! And plus ... he implicitly gives you the questions before the test. and by implicit i mean the closest as he can get to giving you the actual question without giving you the actual question.
simply the best. you know he knows everything, he is passionate, he is super funny, he makes this class amazing. i dont know if I was lucky to have an amazing class but he sure helped make this semester pass so quickly i was sad for the last day to come.
I just love this teacher. Very smart man, he delivers every class so well.
Axel is a really awesome lecturer. If you decide to read and keep up with his course outline you are well on your way to a favourable grade.
Axel is amazing. He is helpful and if you care about getting an A, he will help you get there. He motivated me to specialize in IPE and eventually do a masters degree. He knows what he is talking about and I am definitely taking him again. He is one of the most amazing teachers of the dept. Also he is super helpful in office hours!
Professor Huelsemeyer seems to be a very knowledgeable teacher but not so clear for explaining the materials of the course. A lot of readings is given, some useful and interesting but some other so hard!
Amazing class, and looked forward to going to every lecture. midterm was tough, but worth it if you like the coarse material. Brilliant man, only down side is waiting for marks.
This class was harsh but I loved it especially thanks to Prof. Huelsemeyer who was very helpful and tried to make this class and long readings a lot less boring. I hope every teachers could be like him.
Has a German accent which you would think makes him hard to understand but remarkably makes it easier. He takes time to clearly speak and properly deliver the information and is always willing to answer questions. Gives good examples that are easy to retain to. Easy grader, little reading needed and only for exam studies. Simply show for easy mark
Axel Huelsemeyer is a professor who expects the readings to be done for each class, and honestly if you do the readings the classes will be a breeze. It takes a class or two to get used to his accent and once you do you will be fine. Huelsemeyer encourages questions, so if you don't understand anything, ask and he will explain. Very enjoyable class
Prof. Huelsemeyer is an amazing teacher. He takes the time to explain every detail on the course material, which is very helpful for midterms but also for the final. I really appreciated going to his lectures. There's quite a lot of readings, but it's doable. Really loved this class!
Humble, funny, student oriented good teacher. He focused on the big pictures, grading is clear and explained in class later on. You need to read the lectures, there will not be surprises, but testing your understanding. He makes you work for it: 2 midterms + a paper before final. But Im glad I took his class, learned so many useful things on IR.
Sensible hearts and ''C gets degrees'' type abstain. His class is hard, requires heavy amount of work ethics and dedication, participation and preparation. He's a great prof and is clearly passioned by what he's teaching and doing, at the seminar level if you do not share that passion, don't even bother. And he likes very small groups (12 people).
Hardest class I've ever taken throughout my 3 year degree. Buy his book or rent it from the Library. In 3 years I've never needed to read a text book (wiki and youtube were enough), but not with this guy. He wrote the book and everything u need is in there. Google can't replace the book (only class I've ever seen this happen). Avoid if u lazy
Lot of reading but he's a pretty good teacher
Full disclosure: I took his POLI305 class during the covid pandemic when everything was remote. So take what I say with a grain of salt. -His "textbook" is almost exclusively open-source articles with almost nothing added. -He's impossible to get in contact with -His lectures are incredibly difficult to understand due to his voice and babbling
Im not sure if hes a better in-person teacher, but when it comes to the current online format its quite challenging. The textbook readings are fairly long, but you need to use info from the textbook to answer exam questions or youll probably do bad. On the bright side the TA grades everything and Axel says he will not override the TAs decision
If you can take this teacher in class then do it. If you have him online just drop it.
is the sort of professor who will say "i understand that things are rough" and then add to it
If you are someone who requires clarity from a professor to do well, Axel is not for you. He simply posts recorded lectures with minimal information so basically we are responsible to learn the topics from the book. The mid term is fair and graded by the TA, but the term paper is an unclear nightmare that seems simple, but isn't. I do not recommend
Even if high marks come easy to you I wouldn't recommend Prof. Huelsemeyer. It's one of the most dull experiences you could have and expect to pretty much be on your own when it comes to fully understanding the material. Just don't do it especially while we're in a pandemic with an online format, it'll only contribute more to your stress.
Worst experience ever. His prerecorded lectures are so short and unclear, you have to teach yourself everything. His course structure is a mess and the term paper is a freaking calamity! He pretends to help his students by recording 'additional' essay instructions, which turn out to be the same instructions he previously gave us!
The only thing hes managed to do is raise my heart rate this semester with his unclear instructions and god awful pre-recorded lectures that teach you the bare minimum. Do not take him even if youre a naturally smart student. Its not worth the experience.
I cannot even begin to explain how bad this class is. Recorded lectures provide you with the most minimal understanding of the course so essentially get ready to read the book if you actually want to learn something. His term paper is so unclear and he doesn't make it any clearer in his Term Paper Lecture. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!
The mid term exam is alright as long as you familiarize yourself with the textbook material. Besides that his term paper is horrible and the instructions are extremely unclear. His final exam is one that you would be given in a 400 level class or graduate school according to him. Overall he teaches the bare minimum. Terrible experience Never again!
This class was not well adapted for remote learning. There were no live classes; which would have been all right had he discussed the reading material in his pre-recorded lecture videos. So yes, get ready to read attentively (and buy a magnifying glass because the text size in the required textbook is 7.5 at most).
I am convinced that Axel doesn't care about teaching or our mental health. If you enjoy teaching yourself the material then take him, but don't complain when you find yourself pulling your hair out doing his nightmare term paper. The final exam is stupid the essay questions are so vague. Just do yourself a favour, stay away.
Worst teacher I've ever had. His instructions to the term paper and the final exam were the most confusing things ever written and I highly doubt anyone understood what we were supposed to do in the class because NOTHING was clear. Maybe he's okay in person, but online? Lord, if you love or care about yourself don't take him during remote learning.
Made the already difficult task of staying on top of your studies from home much harder. Term paper was a complete nightmare with very very unclear instructions. The final also had vague instructions but some key details he only said briefly in a recorded lecture. You teach yourself the material and get frustrated by the assignments. Avoid
Horrible just horrible ! He does not know how to teach for the life of him its honestly very sad. If you wanna get graded on 3 assignments that will graded extremely harshly, I suggest you take him. If you actually want to pass I highly suggest looking for another prof.
Axels teaching ability should be a cause for concern and honestly the university should look into him because he literally took a back seat and taught us nothing. Paying him a salary is like flushing money down the toilet. Minimal teaching, inaccessible, overall careless and unclear. Stay away from him if you know whats good for you!
Was unaccessible outside of class takes close to a week to answer emails, posted 2 20min lectures per week to cover the material for the week. So instead of the 140 min of class you got 40 for the same material. We were expected to read 70+ pages a week to learn the material and needed to reference the textbook in the exams. DO NOT TAKE!
I took him during Fall 2020, it was horrible. I never saw the guy, he was always posting videos online with him ready the slide with a heavy accent. He gave us one midterm which was horrible although he allowed us to write in bullet point. The term paper was over 3k words and the final took forever to complete (essay format and short questions)
Axel puts in minimal effort but expects the opposite. I have yet to see a single PowerPoint or grading rubric without any typo. Quite frankly he should have his tenure removed as he lacks professionalism and relies on recorded lectures to weasel his way out of answering any questions that students might have. I expect better from Concordia Uni!
I really liked the class, you might not see the teacher, but I learned a good fair with him. Exams is exactly about what he teaches + the readings he assigns. The TA was always helpful when I asked for help too! The only "complain" I can give is that he has a strong accent, but after like 1 or 2 weeks you get used to it. I recommend!
Though a nice person, he appears to provide the bare minimum, he is vague with his instructions, & in the attempt to explain he rambles on and repeats himself but still manages to be unclear. Rarely answers emails & hard to get a hold. Only got 1 grade back out of the 6 assignments. Doesn't do class, he makes us do it through presentations.
Axel assigns a LOT of weekly reading and then will vaguely go over the material in 30 minute lectures. I got through the class reading summaries and basically teaching myself all the material online. I managed to do well in the class by teaching myself all the material. If you're not ready to put in the work, do not take this class.
Probably the worst professor I've taken at Concordia.
This professor thinks to highly of himself, extremely rude and unhelpful. Lectures are unclear difficult to understand. Requires purchasing his textbook other wise if you don't quote his book in the assignments he gives you a 50. Papers get heavily penalized for not quoting him. Not worth buying the book or taking the class. Horrible professor.
AVOID AT ALL COST!! There are no clear guidelines given for the assignments (term paper with only a vague subject that could be interpreted in so many different ways). Graded on your ability to quote his textbook & even if your answers make total sense but don't quote the textbook, you're going to get a bad grade. Unclear & sucks at teaching!
Taking this professor is a challenge. He is hard to reach in office hours, not very clear with instructions and does not teach in class what will be on the midterm and final. If you have to take this prof and this class, treat it like an exercise for real life.
If you're reading this, do yourself a favor and drop this professor's class. Incoherent lectures and inaccessible outside of class, this professor's class will simply be an exercise in frustration. Instructions for the course's three assessments are vague and require significant understanding of 80-100 pages of dense reading assigned every week.
One of the best profs at Concordia. If you are lazy youll be punished. Work hard and put in honest effort and youll be rewarded with knowledge and a great mark
I have taken professor Huelsemeyer in POLI 205 (A-) and 305 (B). He is, without a doubt, the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. It is nearly impossible to understand him, it is very difficult to connect the readings to the tests, he struggles to explain the most basic concepts, and he and his TA almost never answer emails.
Miserable human. I've heard terrible things and chose not to listen. Two weeks into the semester and he sent an email to students stating those who have not already participated shouldn't bother to attend the next class as they "would be getting a failing grade in the course regardless." Difficult times as is for some. He ought to be ashamed.
I had him for both poli205 & 305. AVOID HIM. He makes you buy $100 textbook he wrote himself, which youll need to read or else youll fail your exams. Hard to understand when he speaks, but thats out of his control. One thing I appreciate tho is that his classes are sweet and short, but so uninteresting.
This teacher doesn't seem cool but he definitely is. His classes are very interesting but ask a lot of work. We learn a lot from him, we just have to abide by his requirements. He doesn't hesitate to put a C if you don't read the 80 pages every week. It is a great source of culture and you will get As if you follow his advice. Very good teacher.
Once he opens up he's wicked funny, but most of the lectures are just reading from a slide show. Remember to engage with the authors. There is a lot of reading, but this is university so just do it.
Took him a while back during the pandemic but I feel this is relevant because people need to be made aware not to take him. He used to post crappy 20 minute recorded lectures and was just such a disregarding individual. No cares in the world for any of his students like I can promise you that if I had him in person we would have a personal problem
I created an account to leave a review on this Professor, something I never thought I would do in my 3 years at Concordia. Horrible professor. Teaches most basic things in class that WON'T come in exams. Forces you to buy HIS book that is just a collection of other works, content comes from there. Extremely passive aggressive and controversial.
This was the most uninspired class I've ever attended. Prof just lazily reads off slides. All examples of international politics used are outdated. Some info he gave on current events (when asked) was actually wrong (ex. he advised us that Gorbachev was still living). Assessments were so confusing that no one knew what the expectations were at all.
Felt like a waste of time being in class. Read off the slides. Textbook was pointless, all the needed readings were available online for free. Exam contained lots of elements that were not part of the readings nor of the class content.
RMP removes ratings, he grades by his feelings, so avoid him at all costs. 2/3 of the class dropped the class, he would bully students into dropping out by using profanity and intimidation repetitively in class, he has little idea of the current reality in PoliEcon, the readings are outdated and factually irrelevant; take him if you like drama!!
While he is nice as a person, he cannot teach. His PPTs and explanations are unclear. Instructions for the paper were unclear.
Bro makes you buy his OWN 150-dollar textbook, which is all just compilations of articles you can find online for free. Impossible to understand not his fault but like... I'd save yourself the time and the $ and not take this class. Also if its in the Fauburg you're basically signing up to get tortured in a basement by some German dude.
If you enjoy blowing money on useless courses where you'll gain absolutely no knowledge on the subject being taught and being absolutely bored out your gourd then take this class. Want a good grade and a better understanding of subjects that interest you? FUHGET ABOUT IT! Want clear instructions on term papers?? GET THE FUG OUTTA HERE!
Very rude and started the semester by saying he doesn't like me because he didn't like my sister a couple years prior
Just don't. Lectures are nonsense, and the powerpoints are very confusing. I learned nothing from coming to class. If you are okay with self-teaching yourself the material, and confusing criteria with no feedback, then you'll pass alright. Prof made it clear he would not be reachable outside of class, the TA had to do everything.
He just can't really teach. His slides are incomprehensible and so are his lectures tbh, he will not grade or look at any of your work and leaves everything to the TAs. He will most likely end classes early and you will walk away knowing vague half notions, and will then need to teach yourself. The exams and work are pretty easy tho.
Hands down, one of Concordia's worst teachers. Mandatory 150$ purchase for a book HE wrote, basically scamming his own students instead of giving a pdf of his book. Incredibly boring lectures, and I mean ALL the class is snoring. Doesn't explain properly, nor are his instructions clear for the assignments. FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I think some of the overtly critical people are a bit harsh. Really, all you need to do to succeed in this course is use the textbook - everything is in there, and he explicitly tells students who attend class to use it and not just rely on lectures.. It seems like he reuses exams, too. He is passionate and helpful, albeit with a nebulous accent.
He's not the worst teacher I've had. His accent can be hard to understand at times, but you get used to it. The textbook costs $150, you can easily find a used one for around $20. I took him in the summer and the midterm and final are take-home, but usually he assigns a research paper. All in all, it wasn't a terrible course with him.
Just don't. Literally just don't.
