great teacher but students at butte seem to be whiners and don't understand that college isn't a place where work is SUPPOSED to be easy. (Even though in this case the professor is quite helpful.)
Not a very good teacher at all. Very unclear and unhelpful. Her tests are a toss up. Out of 40+ students I believe only 8 got above a C. Don't take her, you will thank me later.
Dont take her!!!!!!! she neeeds to get her class down. shes smart but her test suck bad. I regret signing up fo her class it to late to drop. I hope she loses her job!!!!!
Those who complain are an embarrassment to college level work. To sum up how easy it is, I and another student DO NOT read the book, only what is posted on web ct, and passed her EASY tests with an A. There are way too many whiners in this class - Anthro doesn't get any easier than w/ Johnson! She gives you the test questions on the study guide!!
This is a good discussion class... very open minded. However, her tests are vague and she doesn't clarify what to study. Make sure, for the test, you study the readings
It is a shame that college students feel they can slide through school and not learn anything. Her test outline gives all the possible questions for the test, and the test is made up of these questions WORD FOR WORD!! She assigns numerous extra-credit options, and gave me a 3-week extension on my paper without lowering my grade! I recommend her...
This teacher is very good. All of those who think otherwise are plain lazy and ignorant. Take this teacher!!!
Do not take her classes!!!! She is very vague and the reaserch paper is a joke. I dont know where these other people are getting a study guide from, but let me know. No help what so ever, unless your lucky enough to go for coffee with her.
Tests are pretty easy, just show up every day and pay attention. I didn't open my book once and aced all the tests. Research paper was really confusing though. She basically told us when the paper was due and left us to figure the rest out. Her accent is nice, i din't find it hard to understand, but class was extremely boring
she is a really good teacher and makes the subject interesting. Most of the class timeis class discission orwatching videos. I would recommend this class.
Class is discussion and thats easy, and you can get through without much reading, the research paper though is really hard and she isnt very helpful! sort of mean when i asked for help too! but class is alright you jsut have to show up, and tests are super easy! shes alright...
I was worried about this class at first she sounds hard, but I had a blast in this class. Honestly all you need to do is skim the reading, I read the handouts 15min before class and could keep up with disscussion. Class is all video and talking. The tests are simple, all on her notes. The paper stressed me out but pick a topic and you're golden!
She is a nice person. Devoted to ANTH-16. However, this class is tough. If you like this kind of class, you need to study hard and know how to write papers in AAA format. Believe me, not many people know what AAA is for.
i love this teacher you just have to do the work. Speaks english very well with slight accent. i have gone out of my way to take her classes. Very helpful and study guides are not given but has a class before the test where you can ask and refresh.
I've tried taking physical anthropolgy with another teacher and I found it to be a little too difficult. Ayse's class is pretty easy, just make sure to do all of the writing assignments...and be aware that she doesn't give study quides and she doesn't give any clues to what might be on her tests. Otherwise, it's pretty darn easy.
she is really helpful...she arouse my interest a lot. for me, her class was one of the best classes...her english is great. i had no difficulties to understand her...take her class. enjoy.
She is a great teacher who is very interested in this subject. She definitely made an impression on me through her class. If you need Anthro 4 I would highly recommend her. Participate in class and voice your opinion and you should do fine. Anyone who says they cannot understand her English is just being mean and shallow. Take her class!
Maybe she used to be great but thats over now shes the worst teacher i ever had i used to be a teacher myself and her style is horrible she lectured on one subject then tested us on another the class was like a zoo so many people talking and leaving you couldnt concentrate, and her grading style is horrible if you really want to learn dont take her
She ia a very hard teacher, very hard to understand with her accent. She is very unorganized and not willing to work with you on anything. If you have a problem she is not the one to go to to get help. Hard grader and just all around not a good teacher prob my worst. Most of the class is lost on what she is talking about almost all the time.
You'll feel like teacher is sabotaging your grade and after awhile you get tired of arguing with her. Often wrong, unclear and never helpful. Take this class with any other teacher!
Good professor. Class isn't very hard at all. Just show up because that's where test questions will be from. You don't really have to read the book at all, it's all discussion. She practically gives you the answers. Few tests, but all pretty easy.
SHE IS A REALLLLY HARD TEACHER. NOT HELPFULL AT ALL. SHE THINKS SHE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH BUT DOESNT, HER LECTURES ARE VERY UNCLEAR AND AND SHE GRADES REALLY HARD.
She's very interesting, just ask questions and do your homework and you get a good grade. Just make sure to ask a lot of questions, but there are like 4 essays the whole semester.
this teacher's awesome!she made me absolutely love anthropology.she is super helpful and wants everyone to succeed;she practically spells out what's going to be on the test during class, so listen up!she requires a few short essays, some in-class activities, and good attendance to get an A- and dont chew gum, she'll call you out! take this teacher!
Worst teacher Ive ever had.
really great teacher! i am learning so much, i actually like coming to this class...really easy if you listen, go to class, and follow directions, which people seem to have difficult with and then blame her for their own mistakes. i definitely recommend this teacher, i am changing my major to anthro because of this class.
What she teaches is interesting and the class gave me a lot of insight, but she is strict in her grading and, make sure to use and cite references in essays!
The articles she gives us are interesting and fun. Come to class(since your paying anyway). The subjects are great and eye opening. She helps you if your writings a little bit shabby and she gives you a second chance to fix mistakes on your essays. Great class and teacher if you have an open mind!
this teacher is great! she's so sweet and helpful, just give her a chance. some of these other comments made me sick, get a life! you're in college, studying and following directions are pretty much the norm here, so get used to it and stop blaming other people for your laziness!!! i love your accent Ms. Taskiran!!!
Ms. Taskiran is so cool! She obviously loves what she does which makes you love it too. Her tests are cake and all you have left are some readings, class discussions, and a few writing and in-class assignments...EASY A IF YOU SHOW UP!!! I definitely recommend this teacher, shes great!
FREAKING COOL! The most I've learned and actually enjoyed in a college class...take this teacher if you want to learn something and get an easy A.
This teacher really is a good teacher. She specifically says what is to be expected and follows up on it. Because of her accent she may be a little hard to understand and you have to ask questions to get everything crystal clear. Great class too.
Much of her class is just a group discussion of experiences and stereotypes we might have. The content is very interesting, and her tests and quizzes are a dream to pass, as long as you pay attention in class.
cool teacher. the material is interesting and she obviously likes teaching it. shes really helpful when you go see her and has clear expectations of you. her tests are so easy- if you read and come to class this will be an easy A. recommend!
learned more than i would have ever expected about people, culture, and life in general. i came out with a better understanding of the world, which is priceless in my opinion. so much more than just another GE class, it was a lesson on life. i wish i could take it again!
Really bad teacher, I worked my butt off and got a C. I got 50/50 on all of the tests but 0/50 on 2 of the 3 essays. She didn't even grade the essays if you didn't use the right reference format. Terrible.
My only complaint is that with all the papers, you have to use ProQuest, or journal articles. She won't even look at your paper unless all the references are journal articles. It's hard to write an enire paper with just those references!
Overall she is a good teacher but there are signs that she's getting lazy. rushing the last few weeks, some days with nothing to do.. there were VERY few opportunities to challenge yourself.. it's an Easy class, just show up and do the homework
OK! Here I go...I learned a great amount of information about other cultures. I was actually awake in this class. As for the teacher...she is bleh. she was not clear with the research paper. I was totally lost, and found my own way the hard way. Then when i ask her about my paper, she would give me a cold stare and mean tone as if i did something s
The class itself was good. The teacher was rather harsh. She was not sweet or helpful to me. I worked my butt off in this class too. But because of a few mistakes here and there, whenever I ask her about whats wrong with my papers she would give me a cold stare and mean tone as if i did something so wrong. So, I wouldn't recommend her. But if you'r
Ayse is a great professor. She is extremely professional, she stays on topic, and has a great passion for Anthropology. Her tests are easy for Cultural Anth but Physical Anth tests you must study for in order to pass. Recommended for all of her classes!
I really enjoyed the content of this class, but the teacher was a little difficult. I wanted to like her, but she just had a negative demeanor that made me uneasy. Her exams were very easy if you come to class regularly but she was a little harsh with grading our papers. If she had been a little more approachable this class would have been perfect.
She is unclear about what she wants. Really hard teacher and be ready to READ. A little hard to understand aswell.
she was very unapproachable.
I enjoy Ayse cultural Anthro class. She open my mind to my own culture and she's very approachable. I would high recommend her Anthro 4 class for anyone who like open class discussions and a little different from other professor. I love her teaching style, its different and you're thoughts are respected. She's a great teacher!
Seemed very nice but low energy. She came off a little harsh, not very approachable, and didn't seem excited about the subject matter. It was hard to figure out what she was looking for/asking and when asked to elaborate we sometimes felt more lost.
Taskiran is my favorite teacher ever. Anthropology is my major and she made it very fun. Many people complain because they have to write a paper, it college, you have to do work. As for class she knows the subject and loves it. Has great passion and tests are easy. There is also 50 point of extra credit. Great Work!!! anthro 2&16 loved them!!!
She's rude and disorganized.
She was the worst teacher Ive ever had.On her essays she wanted to be perfect and her tests questions are really hard to answers...plus I work so hard in her class than any other classes and got a D+...I was really mad because I try my best.
I've seen a lot of complaints concerning the paper and tests. If you are in class to watch the videos and take part in the discussions it's not only informative but also easy. A format is provided for the paper just follow it and put in some effort. Ayse's class is university quality. It comes down to attending class and just doing the work.
I really enjoyed this class. The course content opens your eyes to the world around you. If you read the material and do the work, this should be no problem. The test questions are comprehensive. They test you on all aspects and making the connections. I really enjoyed this class!
Alright so this class didn't fit the description at all. Apparently Ayse decided to use our class as a guinea pig and change the curriculum. There's a lot of reading, not much writing, a lot of crying, and people are always walking out of class. If you want to take a class that relates nothing to Anthropology and get an easy grade take this class.
nice person but not a great teacher. seems to overwhelmed with other classes. contridicts herself alot and not willing to help students understand more. she expects students to remember everything from the first day. changes her mind alot on assignments and very unclear instructions. very hard class to pass and understand
Ayse is an amazing instructor. She's very passionate about Anthropology and that makes for an interesting class. I learned a lot in her class and have developed a new found excitement for anthropology because of her. For all of you lazy people, of course you received terrible grades. She was excellent and her class was easy. Do the work; get an "A"
Good teacher, harsh grader. you have to do a research paper and she's really specific about it. Ready the guidelines carefully and follow directions. Only purchase the article book. The other book was pointless. We never used it once. Quizes and assignments are random. Exams are easy if you come to class. Easy class. Just a lot of work!
I'm taking her for Winter Session and it is the best, you really get to know her, and she teaches well. She really wants students to be active in their communities and culturally wise. She is a great teacher! I highly recommend taking her classes, especially for the winter because you get the best out of a 4 hour day with this type of class.
Ayse & i are at entirely opposite ends of the political spectrum as are our personalities. I took both phys & cult anthro last sem. i received A's in both. go 2 class & put in the work. she WILL help u but u must b persistent.use ur brain & ask the right ?'s.anyone can b successful w/her just keep an open mind.she can b standoffish though.
Hard to understand- she doesnt really answer your questions, just goes around them. Kind of confusing with her accent, when she tries to explain things, i just get more confused.
Great teacher. Attendance is mandatory as the tests cover what she discusses in class and not so much what is in the textbook. She only lectures about topics she expects you to know for the exam, so that makes it very clear and easy. The book report was easy and enlightening. I really enjoyed this class.
Nice but should be teaching elementary school. The actual field of Anth was a minor factor in the class as the majority of the class was devoted to her attempting to enlighten people. I found her to be presumptive and insulting in what she assumed her students thoughts were. The hardest part of the class was sitting through it.
4 those who r dying to take this class, its not as great as u think it is!!Her gradin is to hard.i dnt knw who she thinks she is but her gradin is horrible!the teaching sucks! the teacher is VERY unorganized and hard to understand according to her accent. textbook that are required for this class is a waste of money!! she never use any of it!!
Ayse was ok. If you want a class that you don't always have to go to, I don't suggest this one. The content of her tests consisted mainly of information that was given to you in class. It's pretty easy, though, to get a good grade if you attend class. You'll be fine if you just take notes and participate.
she is very passionate about what she teaches and it is very refreshing. She encourages free thinking and progressive ideas and the class was a lot of flowing discussion which is great. She is very helpful to go see in her office. She can be intimidating but don't let looks fool you she is a great person and very fun. Read the books so you can foll
She's OK if you follow instructions. True, she is very strict on formatting for the research paper, but she said what she wants when she gives you the instructions - just follow the guideline. She is a little unhelpful - when you ask her a question, she tends to go around it and never give you the answer, and DON'T CALL HER OUT ON HER MISTAKES!
it's an interesting class. ayse makes you realize things. she expects you to understand the assignments that are given. if you ask any questions about it, she makes you look dumb. She is kind of rude, but still a great teacher
I loved taking Anth 4 from Ayse. I was a bit worried after reading her reviews here and hearing other students talk, but her class is easy if you participate and attend.
Ayse is a respectful teacher and encourages student to think. Her class is very easy you don?t have to do a lot of studying as long as you attend class and take notes. The only big assignments are a poster project and an essay witch are also fairly easy.I definitely recommend her.
This class will open your mind to things you have never thought of before. It seems she truly loves the subject.
I loved having her as a teacher! I took her winter session class and ended up with an A. She is a really helpful teacher and her class is extremely interesting. I would really recommend her for this class. She really makes you think about things you would never consider before. Everyone says her grading is tough but it really isnt..
Ayse Taskiran is truly an amazing professor and teacher. Coming across such a teacher is rare. Her class and teachings provide us the space to be honest. Furthermore, she inspires me and many others to better our world and to keep hoping. I truly recommend Ayse. I learned so much from her. Thank you Ayse.
Interesting style, she is more interested in ensuring you are able to make your own decisions about what you believe. She accomplishes this through discussions, articles and videos. Class syllabus will change for the Fall. I'm sure she will come back energized and ready to teach. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent in her class.
Ayse is a wonderful professor, so long as you're willing to go into class with an OPEN MIND. This class is very engaging, never boring, and she allows students to learn for themselves. Easy A and a fun class so long as you pay attention to your syllabus. Highly recommend her for Anth 4.
terrible teacher. she is not one bit easy to communicate with. wouldnt recommend taking her.
Ayse is AWESOME! She ensures that everyone in the class is treated with respect no matter what their opinions are. She shows you a different side to every cultural practice & belief. She is easy to talk to & understanding. MUST TAKE AYSE!
this teacher is super nice and understanding. however her class is more of a sociology class than an anthropology class. you will only learn about how americans view the world. she isnt very clear on class assignments. tests are super easy 1-3 questions at the most.
not very clear on assignments.
A lot of people have a problem with Dr. Taskiran, but I found her to be an intelligent and interesting woman and this class to be very enjoyable. She was very easy to understand even though she has an accent. If you just attempt to talk with her she can be very helpful. She gives a reasonable amount of work and makes the class interesting.
You need to make sure to read the articles she assign's, especially the last few, they are typically on the quizzes. Also, learn the terminology it will help you immensely and if you want full credit it needs to be worded properly anyway.
Cultural anthropology was the greatest class of my college career. Taskiran is one of the most inspirational and amazing teachers/human beings I have ever met. I am so grateful I chose to take her class. The environment was so fresh and exciting, though controversial at some points. Her class honestly changed my life for the better.
Ayse (I - shay) is AWESOME! I took her for cultural anthropology & she was so helpful, very understanding, explains everything & very clear on what's due & the due dates. Not a whole lot of homework, but tests are based on those as well as in class discussions. So attendance is a MUST! I love talking with her and would definitely recommend her!!!
Unexplained assignments & tests. Hard to understand. You are unaware of your grade the entire semester. I would not take her
Very insightful and friendly. Anyone who says she is a bad teacher is just upset that she doesn't teach everything from a western point of view. Come in with an open mind and you'll enjoy this class.
Honestly, she's one of the worst professors I've had at Butte. She grades too hard and her class is a bore. She gives the benefit of the doubt to those who are not fluent with English. Unless you're a foreign exchange student or can't speak English fluently, don't take her class.
One of the worst professors I've had at UC Oroville. Being a middle class white male ultimately hurt me in that class last semester. I would not recommend taking her if you have an alternative mind than that of Ms. Taskiran. To succeed you must drop your beliefs and agree with everything she says. Would not recommend.
She is horrible teacher, she grades too hard and her class is like debating or discussion class. I wouldnt recommend her
Her grading criteria is specific and if you do it you won't have to worry about your grades, but class discussion is different. She's very close minded about any beliefs or opinions except her own. She makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, it's not a very comfortable environment. If you like feeling stupid take her class.
Makes Evolutionary Anthropology clear and understandable and interesting. She is extremely helpful with questions and any confusion you may have. Would recommend to anyone.
Go to class, pay attention, follow syllabus, do the readings and homework. And be prepared to learn about others as well as yourself. Simple.
Good Professor if you're trying to actually learn something about Anthropology. Must read a lot from the books she makes you purchase. 3 Exams with quizes on the readings. Uses videos and powerpoints. Makes everything pretty clear if you pay attention. GoodAverage Teacher. (Not very comical. Pretty serious class.)
Lazy teacher, doesn't want to grade anything! Pop quizzes and tests are never multiple choice, she doesn't believe in those. Doesn't tell you when tests are so have syllabus ready! My whole class failed due to poor teaching, not a single student that I knew had a A. Take any other teacher if possible.
Incredibly unforgiving and argumentative. To fit within her strict word counts on essays, you're required to agree with her sources, and her sources only. The class is soul-crushing. It's not hard to pass, but it's hard to feel good about yourself while you do.
For those saying she's a tough grader or she doesn't care about you, pay them no attention. Ayse is there for you all throughout the semester. Take advantage of her office hours! It's a fairly easy class, but come on. IT'S COLLEGE. She gives you many extra credit opportunities so you can try and make up failed tests or assignments.
Tests are essay style so she is assured you know the material as opposed to a lucky guess. She requires that you keep to the word count and professional sources just like employers. She spent time making sure everyone in class was heard and respected in spite of a student who was too ignorant to appreciate it.
I like her. The more we get into the class though i am realizing how prejudice she is towards the white American. She talks down on white Americans like we are the reason for all the problems in the world. I don't like it one bit.
I took her class last semester and she failed me because she refused to agree with any other point of view besides hers. When giving a class description in first week she said that the class was about keeping an open mind about other cultures, but on multiple occasions she gave me an F on assignments when I expressed my objective views on the topic
oh dear, where to start. This is NOT AN ANTHRO CLASS. she is all about putting down white people and preaching white guilt. I dread going to this class as it makes me feel uncomfortable. You will learn next to nothing about true anthropology and more on race and political correctness and how you should hate America. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I am baffled by the slander but if your attending college planning to pass for simply showing up then an F you earned. I was challenged, enlightened and have a much broader concept on diversity and culture. Exactly what the syllabus stated. When I was drowning I went to her office and she was 150% open to guide me. Excellent!
Although many in the class play the victim role, this class is one to provoke thinking. She DOES NOT demand that you bend to her thinking, rather that you actually do some of your own. That is very difficult for some to do with an open mind. Show up, participate, put away your electronics and enjoy her enlightening class. Excellent patient teacher.
Dr. Taskiran is an amazing professor! Take her class if your planning on enrolling into an Anthropology class. She is very helpful, especially during office hours! You can basically can talk with her anything and she will always be there for you to answer any questions. Took her courses for Anth 2 and 4. I would totally take them again!
She is definitely against America and white people, it is frustrating to say the least. I understand her point on some stuff, but all we talk about is how horrible white America is. I do not agree with her approach. It is offensive. Class is very easy if you read articles, there's a lot of pop quizzes. Follow syllabus. I would not take her again.
Excellent
This is a hard teacher. She is very harsh on grading if you dont give her HER specific answer than for sure shes going to take points off. And make sure if she writes come see me on your paper you better go or else you get no credit at all for your effort!! Theres a lot of reading and she never goes over all of it just briefly speaks about things.
She expects you to read all the book and articles but in lecture she will mention 1% of everything you read. She is not very helpful at all when you ask a question she will go against you. You wont pass the class if she doesn't like you and you'll know. She is 100% right all the time and will make you feel hopeless. Wouldn't take her again.
I took her winter class and it was amazing. Tomorrow is my last day of her class and I am pretty sad about it. I learned so much and the time flew by. You can get whatever grade you work for. Ayse teaches you about anthropology and how amazing it is but she also teaches you life lessons and makes you question yourself.
She was a good teacher. The topics are what some have problems with. She doesn't ask that you believe the topics, only presents them. Its about questioning and critical thinking.
Loved her class! Wish she wasn't leaving.
She's a tough grader with a very different mind set compared to lots of professors. She makes you think differently and in a open fashioned way. Her teaching skills are very on top but she has very hardcore discussions when it comes to racism , environment , and wordly views. I admire her courage to talk about such sensitive topics. WORK HARD
Ayse Taskiran is the most borIng teacher I've ever had. She assigns a TON of reading and in class doesn't actually teach much. She asks us questions as if we know everything. I also don't appreciate all her rules: no food, no drinks, no technology, no late assignments, no fun. She is a college professor so she's entitled to her rules so I digress.
Personally the articles assigned were lengthy and irrelevant in a way. I went to every class jotted down as many notes as she lectured and I got a C on my test (Despite having overly prepared in class) She expects you to remember every word that comes out of her mouth. I tried to get straight A's. She ruined that for me.
Took this class over the Summer and it was the worst decision of my life.
Expects us to know the material. Boring and too strict. She never grades online so it's frustrating to know whether or not I am passing the class. She also gives back our assignments and test/quiz grades weeks later. She is super strict with grading as well. I get there are rules in college, but at least make the class enjoyable to attend.
Dont take this class if you want to pass. She excepted you to learned from the textbook and article but never mention it during class. Test are very hard, NO STUDY GUIDE. NO HW assign but wen she does give HW, 10 minutes in class to write watever she asked. Better be prepare. I regret for take her class, it is my last semester and she ruined it.
Her lectures are absolutely amazing. She's biased in what she teaches, but it's interesting. She taught about tough world issues in a way I had never seen before. Everyone said her tests were impossible, but I got 100% on every one. I didn't study much, but I did every single one of her assignments. Just rewrite exactly what she says in lectures.
I loved Ayse's class. At first I had a hard time in the course, but if you go and talk to her during her office hours she will help you and she might even give you a book. She gives a lot of extra credit. Also the readings matter a lot. She references the textbook a lot and will expect you to remember specific things.
This is the class I dreaded. Assigns an overwhelming and unnecessary amount of at home readings and videos that most of the time either say the same thing or did not aid in learning for the class. The lectures lacked information and instead just voiced student opinions. I'm disappointed with the class, the only good thing is she seems she enjoys it
Such a great teacher! Awesome lectures! A true advocate for people! Thank you for such an amazing class!
There is no accountability on her end to provide up to date feed back on grades. She does not have any documentation of grades when asked. You are required to keep all graded assignments and return them to her at the end of the semester. I did all assignments, did not receive a couple back, did 3 extra credit assignments and my grade is at an F.
It's hard class but I had a crush on her. I hope she is doing well in her retirement.
