THE WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he seems nice at first but he is actually really annoying and a pain. He treats the students like there in high school and gets on your case if your late or whatever.
Bad teacher, dont take him!!!
He is the worst teacher ever!! He is very unclear and is an extremely hard grader, the class topic is interesting but he makes it very boring and unbearable to sit through. Do NOT TAKE HIM!
He is very good and helpful his classes are hard but interesting i think he is a fair grader... Just do the work study and you'll be fine
He is a very passionate teacher. My best suggetion would be...DONT SLACK if you have him b/c if you do your grade will too. He gives lots of x-tra credit so if u feel your falling behind... that will help you out a lot (it sure helped me)
He keeps you interested in class & very nice man. He may comes off blunt but he worked hard his whole life & he feels that we should all do the same.Is understanding.Go to class you will learn, and his work isn't that bad. Its a cramming class & he only gives 2 test maybe a quiz & a porf.of 20 art.
Never disagreed more with a professor and have never been as undermined as with him.
Excellant. Hard worker and a very busy man. He doesn't put up with bull**** and I like that. He also doesn't allow lazy students to walk all over him and he shouldn't have to put up with it. He knows his material well and is clear about what he expects out of the class and you as a student. Kept me on my toes.
Great teacher, fair grader, hard to fail if you do the work.
Layachi is the man! Very clear and quite helpful. Do the work and you'll pass.

worst teacher imaginable: less intelligent than 75% of his students
Fair grader/ knows subject matter/helps you out.
he is confused
he never finishes class on time and will often hold you fifteen to twenty minutes after class finishes.
horrible at time management but a knowledgeable and good guy. gives chances for extra credit. his class is probably not for the C student, though
A great teacher!
I took Layachi as my undergrad course (I am an honors student). I think if he likes you he can be the best teacher but if he doesn't, you are in for a major ride. Unfortunately he did not like me. I was lucky that I busted my butt and managed to get a good grade. However I feel I did not learn much. Layachi is very limited and full of himself...
Don't show up for a class, you're in danger of failing. Miss two, and you're probably going to fail.
He knows his subject matter and has great enthusiasm for what he does. This professor has a political agenda while teaching. If you are able to recognize his political agenda and block it, he is an asset for anyone who wants to get the best education. He is fair, just, and helpful!
He is a bad teacher to take for a three hour class. He does not know how to teach about subject at hand. He does however know how to educate about life through his experiences. Do his work , read text when he says and it is an easy A
He's a nice guy, but he can be a little difficult at times. It's hard to tell if he's joking or being serious, but for the most part, he is joking. Not hard to do well in the class, just read the book and you will do fine. Our final was twelve multiple choice questions and three short, one word answer questions.
I am redoing 20 assignment which he wouldn't let me hand in because they weren't formatted correctly. I am a hard worker and still this guy ruined my freshman year and GPA. Don't take him, and if you do don't let him give you ambiguous assignments, ask him clear concise questions ad nauseam about every assignment.
Okay guys, if you don't wanna do work, definitely do NOT take layachi. Hes a really sweet guy but he gives so much work, like a current event each week, 10 hours of volunteering, a final portfolio that you have to visit all these workshops and museums and stuff that other kids def do not have to do. If you wanna learn then take it, but its boringgg
Dr. Layachi is what you call a "GPA booster." He is a bit boring and gives you a lot of work but its pretty much if you do it all, you get an A. For his grading standards, a B probably is equivalent to an F.
If you do not enjoy doing tons of work while other DNY kids do nothing at all, stay FAR away from him. He makes you do current events each week, ridiculously long readings, papers on various articles every week, a group project, and 10 hours of service learning as well. If you're prepared to do the work, you can get an A.
What can I say? Not the funnest, but easy. Took him for undergraduate and graduate classes, and got an A in both with minimal effort. Take him and you'll get the same.
you gotta love this guy.if you do your work than you'd get out of his class with an A & his assignments aren't that difficult.i had three hour class with him & seemed like none of the students feel bore in his class. Moreover, hes very knowledgeable guy.
the best man i have ever met he even repaired my electric guitar 1 day
Avoid at all costs. gives a ridiculous amount of work with no time to do it in, including group projec, 10 trips to different museums and atractions with a paper on each. he does NO teaching, the students do ALL the work. he might as well not even be there.
Gives way too much work for a DNY class! Even though he said he would cut the work since we met every other week, he still kept the 10 portfolio papers, a group research assignment, and a 5 page ASL paper. The class met every other week, and he would hardly there. IDK if its because of the new structure for DNY, but try to avoid him for DNY!
Best combination - you learn a lot and you will get a good grade. Took for DNY and Government - not a lot of work. Take!
Worst professor ever! DO NOT TAKE! takes way too much time taking attendance. Gives too much work for a DNY class. Personally do not take unless if you have no other hard classes. He will make sure his class is above all other courses. His final consists of chapters he hasn't even taught. Throughout the entire class he didn't teach one single thing
Waste of time. Transfer out, or drop the class while you still have time.
He does give way too much work for a DNY class, but we did nothing in class. Tons of homework, midterm, final, and group project. Though he gives lots of work, I did none, studied for the two tests and got an A in the course. He's a weird grader, I suggest you avoid him, but he isn't as bad as he's made out to be. He's quite funny actually.
He is a interesting person. He likes to talk alot and does give out alot of reading...MADDDD EASY FINAL AND MIDTERM!!!!...But if your willing to sit throught the Lecture you will get a B or better
Tests are fairly easy and Professor Layachi is very good at conveying the material to the class. He may occasionally come off as strict or tought, but it is usually a communication error as he is not always the best at expressing what he wants from his students. Keep up with the articles and he is a so-so teacher, nothing special.

Easy professor.
I have met few people so obsessed with themselves more than Dr. Layachi. He feels that no one's time is more important than his own. In Dr. Layachi's world, students have one class (his) and don't have external events that affect their ability to show up. Moreover, we spent more time talking about his family and personal life than subject matter.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. First off, he blabers about complete nonsense that has nothing to do with anything almost ALL the time. He doesn't teach anything and his tests are incredibly hard due to the lack of teaching. He also gives a lot of homework that has nothing to do with anything.. If you get him for DNY, GET OUT.
TERRIBLE, avoid taking, extremely arrogant and assigns more work than all of my other professors combined
Really rude professor, not very good at relating to students. Kind of arrogant. He knows a lot but he also knows that he knows a lot. He isn't horrible but try to avoid if you can.
Extremely nice guy but not a very good teacher. Assigns a ton of reading each week so you have to stay on top of it. I absolutely dreaded going to the class each week.
Literally worst professor here at St. John's University. St. John's is not that great itself so having him here makes it worse for the student community and the educational structure. He does not care about you much and will only talk about democracy. Do not take him, he is not good.
If you are ever probed to take more than one class with Professor Layachi during one semester, politely decline. It is near to impossible. Keeping up with one class is a struggle, two is borderline suicide. He can be rude, egotistical, and incapable of understanding just how difficult it is to keep up with his assignments and your other classes.
I personally love him. He is such a sweetheart. He makes you feel like you are his friend and he lets you know that he believes in you. I would take his class again, even though his lectures were painfully long (he went over his three hour time slot many times) and really boring. He is also super lenient about late work and just wants to help you.
Extremely rude and egotistical. The time he spends talking about nonsense and his personal life is a disgrace to St. Johns. Buyer beware.
The beginning of the semester for this class was exciting. The textbooks assigned seemed interesting and helpful. The professor on the other hand, not so much. He has a huge ego. What he considers "criticism and feedback" consists of bashing everything you do wrong and giving no insight on how to improve your work.
Stay away from Layachi. He's a bitter and very passive aggressive Napoleon-type. I met to speak with him after class and he was inappropriate and unprofessional. I did inform the dean of his behavior. Do not meet with him by yourself (I'm female). Buyer beware.
He was difficult to understand and he failed to clarify on several occasions. He's the only professor I had an issue with. Choose another professor.
find another professor. plain and simple.
You literally learn nothing, but he takes attendance every class so you have to show up. He can be really mean, almost made a girl cry. Gets frustrated when people leave the room to go to the bathroom or don't show up for class. Would not take again.
Decent professor but boring in class. He is very smart and is helpful to students. Makes himself available to students. He assigns a lot of work but you will learn from it. Doesn't assign worthless papers. Also assigns a lot of extra credit.
If you like learning and reading this class is for you. His lectures are long but interesting. If you are looking for a class where you do not need to attend and not study much this class is not for you.
Professor Layachi is one of the best Professors in the Government Department. Some of these comments below are not an accurate depiction of Layachi. He is a very sweet old guy. He cracks jokes in class to make it a bit more fun and relaxed. He is very smart! Assigns interesting readings & only gives about two essays. He also gives extra credit !
If you really want to learn take him!! He will help you a lot. Cares about his students and their interest. Encourages class participation. Makes the readings more understanding by giving students extra credit to summarize readings in class.
The Morocco Field Study is one of the best courses you can take as a government major. It is a two week course and Dr. Layachi takes students to Tangier, Fez, and Rabat. As a class we toured the parliament, took cultural tours and met the leading Moroccan academics. All guest lectures were extremely informative Best study abroad program.
You will learn a lot, not from him, from the readings, do them. Overall not a good professor. He changes the syllabus and paper your topic almost weekly. He goes off on political rants that most of time have nothing to do with the class. Gives extremely demeaning criticisms on papers. The student is never right, question him, you'll regret it.
One of the best in the Gov department. He is extremely knowledgeable! Goes over the readings in class & takes his time grading your papers so you get a lot of feedback & chance to improve. As long as you show up everyday, submit all assignments and do some class presentations you will get a good grade. I learned so much about migration theory!
If you can take the politics of migration with him DO SO ! Yes there is a lot of reading and at times it can be overwhelming but you learn so much durning the semester. If you go to his office hours he is very helpful and also very funny. He cares a lot about his students and does not go out of his way to give bad grades.
I'm not sure If these good reviews were written by him, but it sure seems so. Most of the people in my program don't recommend him. Unprofessional and sometimes a bit mean and catty. Emails passive aggressive articles about time management and Is not understanding when students' lives conflict with assignments. The workload is also quite heavy.
Don't take him. He's made multiple students cry in front of the class, he WILL put you on blast in front of your classmates. Nothing is ever good enough or right. His emails are passive aggressive, and if you don't do EXACTLY what he says, you're wrong. Every bad review on here is true, not sure how he has more than a 1 on here--Find another prof.
All the positive reviews must be from Layachi himself! I have never posted on Rate before, but this class was enough to force me to make an account. He has no grading system and the majority of the assignments were never graded. Professor Layachi was aggressive toward students and made multiple students cry in class. Do not take him! EVER!
Do not take this class with Layachi. One of the worse academic experiences that I have had at SJU. While He does care for the students he is so out of touch that he made several cry for not agreeing with his points. The grading system is subjective and most of the assignments were never even reviewed. DO NOT TAKE!
Guys, it's quite simple. Do Not Take This Class! Enough Said!
By far the worst professor you can have. 5% of the time he is a nice guy, but hes demeaning, rude, and completely awful to freshman students. Everyone in my class said privately how stressed out they were. He didnt teach us. When we asked for help, he would tell us we were not smart enough. Just a horrible experience. Meeting with deans office.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Gave my class ZERO feedback on any assignment we did. A total of 19 Major assignments. The guy even graded EXTRA CREDIT as actual grades! Meaning if you didnt do well on the extra credit, he counted it towards your grade!! Extremely bitter and will belittle students in front of everyone. Ruined my GPA. Horrible class.
This was the worst class ever. 18 MAJOR assignments, hours of reading every night, never gave us any feedback and waited to tell us AFTER all assignments that we did it wrong (so we never had chance to correct). Counted EXTRA CREDIT as real grades, so if you did poor on EXTRA CREDIT, he put it towards your grade. Horrible mean man, bitter.
Lets just say that a majority of the class supposedly pass failed. Made things even harder with COVID-19 pandemic. Didnt give us any feedback or help entire semester. Also said he didnt care if we had other classes we need to learn to balance. Yet gives us enough work to last all 4 years of college. Wish I pass failed. Beyond scared of grade.
Honestly very upset with this class. Professor Layachi despite having spurts of being nice and funny, was usually mean and cold. His class was extremely unorganized, his grading was awful, he gave zero feedback, everyone was confused and stressed. Most of class Pass/Failed. Truly the worst experience Ive had at SJU. Stay away. Stress 24/7. Not fun
Ruined my GPA, should have pass failed. What a joke of a class. Nasty professor. Gave us so much work, didnt help us at all. Pulled information straight from textbook and said we were all wrong and he was appalled by our stupidity. What he thinks is correct, no one else can be. Freshman students beware. Doesnt care about your classes or feeling
Gov 1050 with Professor Layachi was, without a doubt, the single most difficult and stressful class I have ever taken. Professor Layachi can be very insulting, hard to access, and quite frankly over the place. However, like any class, if you work hard enough you will and can secure the A. Just understand that it will not be an easy one, be careful
I had Professor Layachi for research methods in political science and it was definitely the most stressful class ever. He does assign an insane amount of work but thats not even the main issue. He is extremely critical, often forgets what he told you, will not listen to your opinion, and he is always correct while the student is always wrong.
This is by far the worst academic experience Ive ever had. Do NOT ever take a course with this professor. He treats it as though no one else has any other obligations in their life (last minute assignments, last minute midterms) and takes FOREVER to grade. He gives assignments with unclear instructions and is never available for clarification
Im lucky I made it out alive. Please do not take this class if you dont have too. His grading is very harsh, almost completely dismantled my GPA. If you dont want to stress yourself out look for an alternate Professor.
If you ever need a reason to get a therapist, this is the class for you. Hes a nice guy until the first two weeks of class you have to do a weekly journal+3 lengthy chapters due before each class+10-15 research paper with other homework assignment he randomly assigns. I never smoked cigarettes but I suddenly started after this class. But hes nice
If you want to keep your GPA, don't take this professor. Worst professor I've taken in the gov and politics department. Unclear and tough grader, no matter how hard you work. Not accessible when you need help or ask questions, and is too arrogant to actually work with his students, instead of just telling them they are wrong. Definitely do not take
Horrible do not take. Ive never rated a professor but this time I had to warn everyone. Hes so difficult, gives a lot of work, lot of tests, the tests are hard. When I got in the 80s on a test he said This is ok, but it should be much better, I wonder what happened here. Try harder next time. Stressful for no reason, rude, and unreasonable.
He is unresponsive and not clear when giving directions. Also, when you ask for help he is usually unhelpful. He is not understanding and very clear cut. Things have to be done his way, or else you will be wrong and stupid. You're almost always wrong in his class. Stay clear if you can.
this professor will usually frown upon answers that arent specifically his exact ideas. His work is strenuous, tedious and always more extra than it has to be. He will prolong the class past the time that we are supposed to be there. he once went 30 minutes or 40 mins more. Hes passionate about the topic(s), but hes unreasonably tough.
I took this grad class as an elective, because my main major in the BA/MA was American govt, not IR. He was confusing. He gave directions but always changed his mind on all of it. If your answers were not the EXACT ones in his head, then you're WRONG. Unreasonable grader too. I FOUGHT HARD for my grade. Almost didn't want to pursue law b/c of him.
I never come on here and write reviews. He was very discouraging. He told people, including myself, that we plagirized when we didn't. If you don't answer things exactly the way HE wants, (even if they are correct), they will be wrong. He does seem to like his material, but it is not like other profs. You can take better ones at sju, believe me.
He's tenured and many tenured profs always grade harsher and are more prone to not truly being helpful lol. All i have to say is that if you truly care about your gpa, but you have other things going on (i.e like you work, have kids, etc) do not take him. Only professor that does not consider the fact that his students are human and have lives.
This professor does not understand contemporary american vernacular. is a little too proud with the material and promotes that his answers or POV are the only correct ones. Steer clear
assignment criteria changes a lot throughout the semester. Middle East class is interesting but other profs give great info on West Asia too. Only If you like North Africa topics specifically would you take the class.
I do not write reviews, but this professor angered me beyond belief. He was outwardly rude to me when I had reached out for help. Completely unresponsive to emails and only emails late at night, days later. Legitimately insulted my abilities at writing as a senior in college who has had maintained a 3.78 GPA.
Read syllabus! Loads of extra credit: write weekly articles (10 points), submit class notes, participate!, book - rental under $40. Read it! + class notes & online articles. quizzes are tough, do ALL the extra credit. APA format Term paper for midterm. Final group presentation Powerpoint or video - 10 mins max! Don't let the slackers present SMH
Very tough teacher, but you will learn so much from his class. He genuinely knows what he is talking about. Syllabus is more intimidating than the class itself, but it's still not easy. Expect lots of reading and research. He expects his students to stay updated on current events and to write thorough assignments often. Take in a sem w easy classes
Dr. Layachi is an excellent professor. I was very grateful with his help in getting me a very rewarding and fulfilling internship, I am very thankful to him for this. His internship seminar course is not overwhelming: In order to get an A you just have to get a signed evaluation form, write a paper, and show up to 3 meetings. Highly recommend.
WORST PROFESSOR EVERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SAVE YOUR PERFECT GPA.
Challenging course with shifting assignment criteria. But Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me prep effectively. Recommend only if you're passionate about North Africa topics.
Stay away unless you are a fan of unclear instructions and busy work. This guy will post notes at 1 in the morning the day prior and expect you to know them all from a to z for an exam that he didn't even lecture for, because of a group project that went over time in the previous class (He didn't say at all how long the presentations should be).
Very passionate about topics, but gets so granular with the content he looses track of the lecture and fails to adequately educate students. Asks for all your effort and to accommodate him, but refuses to reciprocate for students. Honestly, passionate professor, but not worthy of your time or effort and wouldn't not recommend.
Very passionate but long past his prime. Constantly goes off topic from his self-made, outdated study guides to the point class ends. Sends home over 20 pages of notes he didn't get time to teach us and then puts it on the test 4 days after sending. Him doing this isn't completely uncommon across the semester. Shouldn't have an A; not tough grader.
