Great prof. that knows his stuff about Islam in both historical and religious contexts. The class isn't too hard. Take him
The class itself was kind of boring but I liked professor Mbengue. He was hard to understand at times but he really wants you to understand so he makes an effort to help you. Easy grader, gives some test questions in advance.
Babacar is a good, coherent professor, and his class structure and grading system are great for an elective. 4 quizzes, 3 short papers, and 1 10 pg research paper for a final. Ridiculously easy grader, seemed like he gave me high 90's on everything (kinda mad they weren't 100's). Take him if you like Islam and don't mind a slight African accent.
He's a nice guy but his class is SOOOOOOOOOO BORING. I dreaded going to his class every day because it was the same monotonous routine all the time. He is a ridiculously easy grader and very knowledgeable on Islam, but the class is 90 minutes of torture. If you want an easy A with a numbingly boring class take him.
Professor Mbenge is a really good professor. His lectures are not boring, and he brings up good discussion topics but its up to the class to participate. 3 papers, 1 research paper (easy, just combine the 3 papers plus 1 more page), and 4 quizzes, and he is a really easy grader
Dr. Mbengue is SOOOOO BORING! He would give monotonous lectures on Monday and he went over the same exact things on Wednesday, and had the most stupid discussion questions imaginable. He is very easy, but I feel I didn't learn as much as I would have liked about Islam.
Dr. Mbengue is very sweet. He is also a very easy grader. Take if you want an easy A.
Professor Babacar Mbengue is so nice and a easy grader too! Just make sure your paper is proofread and organize! Got a A in class and it also improve my knowledge about Islamic!
Great guy, easy grader 4 Quizzes that are right from the lecture power points (he posts power points online) 2 papers (3-5pages) and one ten page paper as a final. Very easy class! he even gives 5/10 questions that will be on the quizzes the class before. Very helpful he agreed to look over my papers before i turned them in.
Very easy class! Quizzes were right off the power points (which he also puts on d2l) and only 3 papers. He agrees to look over them before hand, and is a fairly easy grader. Would def recommend taking him!
He is an easy grader, he is very clear and if you just attend class and do the assignments you will get an A. He likes participation in class and never lets you know his opinions. LOVED HIM. TAKE HIM ! He is a GPA BOOST !
Very nice dude. Slight accent wasnt a problem for me. Very easy grader but 95-100 is an a and 95-90 was an A- and of course I ended up with a 94. Kind of pissed off. Class was moderately interesting but nowhere near necessary. He di take attendence but if he didnt I would never show up except for quizez/due dates and days before quizzes
If u need 2 take a hst class & bring ur gpa up,take him!this is a chill class,he has an accent bt u get used 2it and the quizzes r pretty common sense,I never read or paid attention in class, every1 was doing their own thing..on the internet..bt he is very nice so again, take him!!
Easy class
Professor Mbengue RULES. Super easy and super sweet!
Dr. Mbengue rules!!!!!!!!!!!!! super sweet and super easy!!!
Professor Mbengue is a really nice and easy teacher who is always willing to help. He knows the materiel well and his quizzes aren't very hard as long as you give yourself at least half an hour to study. While yes the class can feel boring at times if you can put up with this than I would highly recommend his class.
I took this professor three times and got an A every time. He is a very nice, easy grader; however, his lectures are tedious, meticulous, and ridiculously boring. Two to three 3-page papers, five quizzes, and a final 10 page paper; in addition, I would say that if you take interest and participate you will learn a lot
really easy class, would definitely recommend. I'm averaging a 95 so far without reading the book. 4 quizzes, 2 short essays and a 10 page essay final. really easy grader. The only bad thing is that an A is a 95 or above. an A- is 90-95.
Dr. Mbengue is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. He sincerely cares about his students and his grading is not too difficult. Most of the information you will need for quizzes can be attained from his lecture. Great teacher, really made me interested in Muslim History.
Hard to understand but hes so sweet. Study for his quizzes and you'll do fine- usually about 10 ?s. About 4 papers (3 pages min) and a final paper (10 pgs) you can literally bs it and do well. Easy A! Don't need the book at all, don't need to do the readings. PPTs online too. Takes attendance @ end of class.
Professor Mbengue is a really great teacher and I think it does him a disservice to say he is simply easy. I mean, he is a generally relaxed teacher, but perhaps that's because he is understanding. Also, his lectures are really thorough so if you pay attention, quizzes and papers should not be hard. Overall a fantastic teacher. Kind and humorous.
Took some time to get used to his strong accent but Dr. Mbengue puts lots of effort to ensure his students fully understand the material. He's willing to slow things down, if you ask, and go over things again as needed. VERY HELPFUL & NICE. Always answers emails right away. Will stay after class 2 talk to students. Very knowledgeable and passionate
Very nice man, but gives very boring lectures. He has an accent and a stutter so it can be hard to understand him at times. He is an easy grader once you get the hang of his class. His quizzes are in depth, but fairly easy if you study your notes.
He's got an accent, but it's not undecipherable. Easy grader, just follow basic instructions. 2-3 papers and weekly quizzes. Very easy stuff. Definitely will take him again. Don't need the textbook. Easy A
Great Professor! English is his fourth language!! I am pretty sure he speaks more than four languages. Very perceptive! The way he engages students is quite phenomenal.
Had him for Sectarian Movements of Islam, Slight accent but more than understandable. Has a little spunk to him which is refreshing. Truly a very well versed man, and highly intellectual yet not arrogant about it at all. Actually gives a damn about his students. great grader, 90s and above 2 papers 4 simple quizzes A 10 page final paper
Prof Mbengue has a really heavy accent so it is hard to understand him. He lectures by reading straight from his notes. He scribbles a few notes on the board, leaving you have to try to understand his english and put it into notes. He is a really sweet guy, but I would not recommend him to anyone. Great person but awful at teaching.
Dr. Mbengue's class is really easy for those who want to get over B. However, his lectures are boring and just few students can keep up with them. After two or three classes, you start understanding his accent. I think he should improve his hand writing a little bit more too finally he wants to help students but he cuts points of from grammar a lot
He is very easy going and the class is simple if you show up.
A very kind and great person and lecturer. Expectations were clear, quizzez, 3 papers, and a library paper for final. Highly recommended
By far the most inspiring and effective professor I've had at DePaul. Took him for religious course and made lectures interesting by conveying how Islamic finance played an important role in today's business. I gained lot of knowledge from learning the basic ethics of Finance. Class consists of lecture quizzes, 3 papers, and participation.
I went into the class knowing nothing about Muslim history and I had absolutely no problem. He's an easy grader and loves when people participates and does not shut anyones ideas down. You do not have any homework, you have a quiz every 2 weeks or so and 3 short papers with one final paper as well. Definitely would take again, great professor.
Easy class if you put in effort and show up! Very clear criteria. Very thorough and informative lectures. Light readings before every class for homework. Quiz every few weeks. 3 papers overall. He does have an accent, but it is not hard to understand at all. Such a genuine man, who cares about what he teaches. Would highly recommend!
very easy grader. few papers and quizzes that he prepares you for.
At first is hard to understand his accent and handwriting but you will get used to. If you go to class and pay attention, you can get an A without reading the book. 4 quizzes 25%, 2 papers (3-5pg) 25%, participation 20%, library paper 30% (10 pg) and extra credit. Easy grader (85-95) and really good professor.
Mbengue's a great professor. His lectures can be boring, but you'll still enjoy them because he loves the material so much. I learned more from him in two quarters than I could learn from other profs in two years. He gives simple quizzes and a couple papers. Final is a research paper that's easily graded. It's a great class for Arabic majors.
Islamic Finance: This class is possibly the easiest A you will receive. 4 quizzes making up 25% of your grade & he gives you most of the questions beforehand. He posts the powerpoints online, you don't have to take notes. Study those and you'll do well. 2 papers worth 25% & the grading was very easy. Final Paper 30%, Participation 20%.
Professor Mbengue is a genuine teacher who is passionate about what he teaches. His class structure is simple: He asks the class a series of questions based on the reading. If you take notes on these, you'll be set for the quizzes. He gives you many of the quiz questions beforehand so you know what to expect. The essays were also leniently graded.
Babacar cares about what he teaches and provides students with an outline for success. Take notes on the questions on his slides. Study those and you should do very well on the quizzes and papers. Lectures can get a little boring, but you actually learn. Hes really open to discussion and an overall good guy.
Super lecture heavy but he tries to make it interesting. He doesn't really care what you do in class, quizzes are easy. There are only like 3 papers, one is the final exam. He doesn't grade harshly at all. Take a class with him
hes the absolute best. take every class he teaches I promise you won't regret.
If you are considering taking his class, DO IT! He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is teaching, and his class is easy as long as you do all the work and study before quizzes.
This man is a straight-up G. Super chill and down to earth. He is very knowledgable about what he is teaching and I love listening to his lectures as I always leave knowing more about the subject. Cannot recommend taking his classes enough. The only reason he doesn't have a 5 on here is that some people can't handle a little bit of an accent.
I. love. him. please take his class. the best professor at Depaul hands down. only reason people don't give him five stars because they can't handle his accent. his accent is literally fine please take his class
He's very passionate and respectful. Cares about his students and is very kind! If you need to fill a requirement or you just have interest in history, take him! His class is relatively easy but I still feel like I learned a lot.
This man is the best, love him. Its a relatively easy course but he genuinely cares about what hes teaching. Wish he taught more classes. 10/10 would recommend
A wonderful professor, he really opened everyone's eyes to the world of Islamic Finance and thoroughly explained and taught if anyone had questions. There are frequent quizzes that correlate to the required readings every week and of course a discussion, a couple of papers that require research as well. Put in the work and you will do great!
Dr. Mbengue's class is fairly easy and is made up of 3 papers, 4 quizzes, and a few discussion posts. He is very knowledgeable on the subject but is not a tough grader. His lectures are very long, but at 2x speed, it goes by quickly. Definitely watch them as they sum up the reading and answer the questions on the quizzes beforehand.
This class was easy, just do the work! His lectures pretty much summarized the readings & he does have an accent, so that's just something to get used to. They were a bit long, but I recommend putting them at 2x speed. I got the textbook, but only really used it for quizzes and papers. There was a total of 4 quizzes and 2 papers, so not bad.
Professor Babacar is GOATed. Kind, sweet, heartwarming, and intelligent. His class is my safe space. He's extremely knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects and a great resource who is always willing to talk after class and generally responsive with emails. Take notes, pay attention, complete your essays, you'll pass.
Bro I got everything wrong on a quiz and got a 90 percent on it
I got every single question wrong on a quiz and he still gave me a 100. Easy class and nice teacher,
if you want an easy A, take this class. hes a super laid back teacher and very easy grader. compiled of 4 quizzes and 3 papers. im awful at history & i got an A. super understanding, wasnt able to make it to class on a quiz day and he made it online for me to make up. cant recommend him enough, absolutely loved him as a teacher. hes the goat.
He is one of the most caring professors at Depaul. If you want an easy A, take this class!! There are 4 quizzes and 3 papers. Just get ready to do discussions. Some of the quiz questions are from the sample quizzes. He is very understanding and wants everyone to do well. He has deep knowledge about the Muslim world and is very passionate teaching it
I dropped this class at three weeks because it was super fast pace and felt like a waste of time and energy. I didn't know a lot of what he was talking about which made it very hard to follow. His accent is sort of hard to understand especially since I didn't know about the content before. I suggest an easier history class.
He was amazing. Great lectures! I loved his knowledge. We had 1 quiz that we completed in class, the other 3 we did online. He would give us a lot of time to prepare and complete the quiz. He would ask questions every class about the reading we had for the day, but honestly, even if you don't participate you will get a good grade.
Loved him! Super knowledgeable about the material, and I really enjoyed the progression of the course. 30% final paper (ten pages), 25% quizzes (four) , 25% papers (two, 3-5 pages each), and 20% participation; show up to class and participate and you will be all set!
Dr Mbenque is one of the most thoughtful, insightful professors that I have had the pleasure to take. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and that is conveyed through his lectures. He can be a little bit dry sometimes but he has a level of care for each of his students that is lovely.
He is a gem. Definitely, the DePaul community is lucky to have him as an instructor.
He is my absolute favorite!
HON 102. One of the best professors at DePaul. Incredibly educated and informative. Super caring for all of his students and very, very easy grader. If you get lower than an A in his class, that's entirely your fault. You must 10000% take his class. Hands down the GOAT.
Hands down the best professor at DePaul. Extremely respectful and caring, I haven't taken a gen-ed course in DePaul with a professor better than him. His lectures show he knows what he's talking about. His quizzes are extremely easy, and his class just involves two papers, and one final paper. If you want an easy A, this is the class!
Very knowledgeable on the subject, makes class accessible, and is extremely patient. The content of the class is interesting, and through his lectures you can learn a lot. I would recommend you do your reading before coming to class, just so you can have a better sense of what's happening, and he appreciates it when students participate.
Professor Mbengue is a fantastic teacher. Very easy grader. We had to read a lot, but not too unbearable. He is a nice man who cares about the topics that he talks about. Only has about 3 papers to write for class. Definitely would take him again.
Islamic Finance: slam-dunk religion course for finance majors, you will already be ahead of 90% of the class. Very easy papers, very easy quizzes as long as you show up to class. Note: no excel, no math; all lectures & reading. Boring class, I learned way more about Islam than I did Islamic Financial products. Highly recommend using a PDF reader
Dr. Mbengue is awesome. He's extremely smart and you will learn a ton by taking this class. He's very chill and grades very easy as long as you put in the effort. Best teacher I've had at DePaul
One of my favorite professors. We had mandatory reading every night but it was not necessary to read everything to get a good grade. Listen in class and the quizzes will be very easy. Very nice professor and very easy grader.
I am currently taking HST 112 with Dr. Mbengue and I love the class! We have one textbook and are assigned a couple pages per lecture which is really nice! We have 4 quizzes but it is mostly based on lecture so its pretty simple. He is really caring and likes discussion which is nice, and also incorporates geography in our lessons!
Dr. Mbengue is a great history teacher, the course only requires a single textbook. His lectures are easy to follow and digestible, and he tries to encourage participation to ensure everyone is on the same page. Quizzes and papers are relatively frequent but manageable and his grading is quite accommodating.
Extremely kind man, very knowledgeable and passionate about the topics covered. Can't go wrong taking him.
He is super nice. Will mark wrong questions right, gives 50% for blank test, and 95% for unsubmitted paper. Easy chill class, GPA booster.
Count how many times he says "uh" and it will drive you insane
So amazing! Love this professor!
Really passionate about the topic, really great lectures he's really fun to listen and learn from. A couple quizzes and papers, participation points. Very easy pass if you read the book and become engaged in the topic, but don't take an islamic finance course if you're not a little intrigued, although id highly recommend this class& this professor
Dr. Mbengue is such a kind and dedicated professor. I enjoyed taking his HON 102 course on Islam and hearing about a side of history that is often ignored. The readings are long, but he does an amazing job at summarizing and clarifying any parts we did not understand. Highly recommend taking his course.
He has readings before every class (I didn't even read them all), & has lectures/discussions based on those readings, so make sure you take notes during class for the papers & quizzes. The quizzes are 10 qs FRQ but he sends a study guide before basically with all the Qs. The papers seem daunting but he is an extremely easy grader so don't stress!
Just take him and you will thank yourself
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. EXTREMELY forgiving grader. Literally impossible to fail. It's a shame so many classmates don't take him serious and come in late/ don't do any work yet he's still so forgiving. His lectures are always interesting too!
My favorite professor so far at DePaul! Very passionate, patient, understanding, and ensures everyone knows all the material for each quiz and paper. It's impossible to fail or fall behind in this course. If I were to recommend any history professor, Professor Mbengue would be at the top of my list! I'd love to take more of his classes.
He's a dawg. Easy assignments, a few essays, and 1 final paper. easy grader. Lot of readings, but as long as you skim through them you'll be fine. Just pay attention in class because quiz questions are usually from lecture.
Absolute chiller. Four quizzes, two papers, and one final paper. Super nice guy, that is passionate about the subject.
Super easy grader, super super easy grader, definitely take if you need a history credit but the class was interesting too
He is such a nice guy. SUPER easy grader. I didnt even read a page of the textbook (or even buy it) and I got a hundred on every quiz. Such an easy class with such a great caring professor. He explains everything great. He gives reviews/practice problems for each quiz that are literally the same questions that are on the quiz. Def recommend.
Super relaxed and chill professor. He had 4 quizzes, which are easy if you read and attend class properly. Also, there are two short papers to write, but they are double spaced, so not a big deal, and last,y there is a final paper. Would recommend taking it if you like history and like to read!
chillest class ever. there were 2 papers (3 pages, double spaced) and 4 quizzes, he always sends out sample questions for the quizzes and its basically the quiz, so just remember the questions and study. great class to finish other homework in. chillest class ever and the professor was nice
Never been big into history, but loved Dr. Mbengue's class. He lectures in a way that requires students to be engaged, which may sound annoying, but it truly helped so much with retention. There's three papers and four quizzes (which are a breeze because he sends out study questions and then goes over them in class). Couldnt recommend him enough.
Dr Mbengue was a great prof! Super chill class, all of the expectations/grading criteria is stated by both Dr Mbengue and the syllabus. Very fair in our grading on both our papers and tests. This course was graded off of attendance, 4 quizzes, 2 essays, and a final library paper. Would take again!
Best professor you'll take. Discussions were great and had me looking forward to the next. Readings are easy, but you don't have to read to participate in the discussion. Tests are also simple, just skim over readings beforehand. Don't take this class if you're not going to value him — he's too kind to be taken advantage of.
