she teaches poly sci as well and those classes are even harder, she will even admit her classes are tough. She makes her self available for help and keeps you awake in class, just study for the test.
she had to step in and take over for Dr. Spears and did an excellent job. She will tell you she is a tough professor but the fact that she really tries her hardest in preparing everyone for exams makes up for it. She responds quickly to questions in class as well as emails. Great professor, but is very tough academically.
extremely hard teacher who forgets shes teaching only an intro class..expects way too much out of her students and thinks everyone is a crj major.. tests are hard as hell.. she is a nice lady though but a million smiles isnt worth all the hard work and tests
Tells a lot of stories in class and then expects you to know many things for the test. I would not recommend this class for anyone who gets annoyed when professors constantly go off topic.
She is an extremely nice lady but just can't teach! Her class is soo boring and then she tests you on things she never taught you. Would definately avoid her if you can!
She is a very knowlegdable teacher, but gets over everyones head easily. She tells a lot of interesting stories, but when it comes for a test review she tells you to know things in the chapters you never discussed in class. She is very nice, but does teach the class like a graduate class. Hit or miss if you can help it.
UNORGANIZED and gets off track easily- Tests are very nitpicky and she doesnt do very good reviews for tests. Nice, but not a good teacher!
Took it during summer it was not bad just a lot of reading and information on the test.
She is all over the place, so if you need strict structure in your classes its probably not a good idea to take her class. However, she is entertaining and a really nice person. I really liked her class, but it is not an easy class. The tests contain a lot of information. Study the book closely and you will do fine!
During class she goes off in rants...with herself. She'll start a topic then end 45 minutes later on a completely different topic. She says attendance is mandatory but she does not teach from the book, and she says everything on the tests is from the book. And everything relates back to Sex Crimes...?
She gets off topic easily and doesn't teach everything that's going to be on the test during class. Definately use the book! She is always available if you have a question... and she'll go into great detail about it. The class can be a lot of work, but I really enjoyed it.
Juvenile Justice was a very interesting class. She doesnt really lecture, we talk alot about her experiences as a lawyer. You have to be very very good at taking notes and reading the text is a must.
Goes off topic every class. Just read the book and go to class, even if you dont pay atention, and you will do fine. I Took her twice for intro and courts, she is a great teacher

boring class!
Great person and professor. Make sure you take notes on what she talks about because it will randomly appear on the tests. Not too much work--great conversations in class. Unorganized though--so that is annoying. Learn a lot.
Avoid taking this class with her at all costs. She is VERY nice, is very knowledgeable, but has NO idea how to teach. Is incredibly unorganized, assignments are VERY unclear and are rarely discussed or outlined in class. She is always happy to help if you ask for it, but the headaches you will get from this class are NOT worth it.
Yes she is very unorganized and i had no idea what was going on most of the time but she knows all this so she compensates for that with easy grading. Basically if she just sees that you try, she'll give you an A. Very nice lady as well
she's awful. she is so all over the place and her tests are some of the hardest i've taken. she doesn't prepare you for the test, to top it off. you basically have to memorize everything in all the chapters you'll be tested on, because she writes them right before you take them and it's all fair game.
Very smart woman. You will go into the last week feeling lost with regards to your final assignment but, if you tried throughout the semester, you'll be pleased with your grade. If you've heard bad things about her from someone, they probably got a grade worthy of their (minimal) effort.
such a nice lady. really enjoyed her class. my favorite teacher ive had. kinda disorganized and hard to know what to study for test. mainly look over terms.
Truly an awful teacher. Rants arbitrarily about topics only vaguely related to course matter (Using an extremely annoying voice for examples), leaving you annoyed and with little understanding of the Criminal Justice system. Phrasing used for test questions is terrible and difficult to decipher regardless of how well you understand the topic.
I personally adored Professor Boyd. She does tend to stray from the textbook, and her tests are hard, but she is completely understanding if the rest of the class is also struggling. Often, she drops the last test in favor of a group final. I took three classes with her and she's one of my favorite teachers. A lovely woman.
This lady is so amazing. She is a great teacher and her tests are extremely easy. Definitely take this class I highly recommend it.
She is by far my absolute favorite professor. She is nuts and makes the material very interesting. I don't take notes but I do study the textbook before every test. Only four tests. The second one (police) is the most difficult. Only 3 allowed absences. Although, I HIGHLY recommend this class. She is awesome.
Such a good professor. Knows what she is talking about and tells great stories. Figuring out what to study can be tough but its worth it. Love her classes - they are never boring.
She loves to talk. I mean loves to talk! She has a ton of stories about everything she teaches and she will tell them. The tests have little to do with the lectures, but everything to do with the book. Study the book well and you will do great. I highly recommend this teacher. She cares about her students a lot.
She is awesome! the tests are all on the book, honestly you don't really need to show up for class to do well on tests. But I would anyway just because I loved her so much. Crazy stories from when she was an attorney, funny voice. Great person all around, anyone who doesn't like her is probably just an idiot.
Professor Boyd is great! Her Test are multiple choice, not easy but its helpful that they're multiple choice. She has great anecdotes and little side bars; I had her for 3 hours once a week and she made the 3 hours bearable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Nice personality and kept class somewhat interesting, but almost nothing she ever talked about was on the exams. Even though it's required to come to class, you could do just as well in the class if you never came. Everything on the exams comes straight from the book.
AWESOME!! She is disorganized but she looks our for her students. Extremely talented when it comes to law, I hope to be as good of a lawyer as she is one day. Awesome stories, awesome class. RECOMMEND
While she does have many years of law experience, she rarely talks about anything but that - which means you only learn the material from the book on your own time...but attendance is mandatory. She was also funny at first but that got old fast. Overall, I recommend staying away from this instructor unless you really need a credit.
She is an amazing Professor!! She went out of her way to help me and while she is sometimes a little disorganized, I would take another class by her.
She knows what she is talking about but does not teach it well. She tells too many stories from personal experience that are not on the test and wastes class time. Does not use PowerPoint or write on board, However, she reads right out of the book so you can sort of follow while she teaches.
I absolutely loved Mrs. Boyd's class! I learned a lot from her class and really enjoyed learning from some of her first hand experiences that she has in the field of Criminal Justice. Even though I feel that I may not always agree with her on some issues, I enjoyed the open forums all the same! Hoping to take another class with her next semester!
This was an interesting class at first. Dr. Boyd was very entertaining and funny, but when it came down to the first test I realized I had learned nothing from taking notes off her lectures. The test is straight from the book and she never teaches anything from it. I would have just stayed home and read the book, but attendance is mandatory. So bad!
Nice teacher and somewhat funny. However, she teaches only about 25% of what is on the tests. If you take her class, make sure to read the book. There are 4 tests each year, which are the ONLY GRADES for the entire semester. Be careful.
She believes her class is the most important class in college. As a senior with 15 other hours she expects that her course be layered with extra material for any student who wants to go to Law School. I just want to graduate. She gives 3 tests, 3 assignments, and 1 major project. I am taking a senior seminar class that is easier.
She is a former prosecutor and likes to tell first hand stories. Very interesting stories but don't necessarily go along with the tests. As long as you read the book you will do fine on the tests. Very straightforward tests. Attendance is mandatory but she offers a few extra credit opportunities throughout the semester.
If you're looking to go to class and learn absolutely nothing then this class is for you. She is not a very good instructor and her tests are ridiculous. Most of the students failed her first test and she thinks that it's the student's fault. She fails to acknowledge that she is unorganized and she doesn't explain the material clearly. Beware.
Worst professor I have ever had. She never answers questions EVER! She never gives instructions. She will assign something without explaining it at all, and when everybody fails she blames the whole class rather than her lack of teaching skills. Her exams are also ridiculous. She does not teach anything on the exam either. You've been warned
Dr. Boyd was the worst professor I've ever had. She was not clear at all about what was on the tests, and never even discussed the book but then put specific questions from the book on certain exams. I'm an A student, and I got a C- in this class. Don't take her. At all costs.
Babette Boyd is very hard to understand. She is way too animated and talks so fast that all of her words run together. She also is all over the place. The only way to pass this class is to read the book cover to cover extremely thoroughly.
I absolutely LOVE this class! It is one of the easiest A's for me this semester. Professor Boyde really knows what she is talking about. HOWEVER if you arn't going to readoutline the chapters I would recommend you DON'T take this class. Everything on the test is in the book. If you don't read I could see how her class might be confusing.
Babette can be all over the place She really knows what she is teaching because of prior experience but she is scatter-brained and lectures (never uses slides or hardly writes on the board). Reading is the only way to pass the tests. I only attend class because of attendance being taken. READ READ READ! She is a nice and funny lady but difficult...
Boyd is a sweet and funny lady. Her lectures can be a bit confusing, because she doesn't use a powerpoint and she can get off topic, so it helps to follow along with the book. She has no homework assignments, just 4 exams. She will call attendance at the start of every class. She tells a lot of good personal stories to explain terms and topics.
You will only pass if you have previous knowledge of the criminal justice system, or if you read the chapters she assigns. Her lectures do not help very well with what is going to be on tests at all. No homework or quizzes, just 4 tests. Every test is on 3 chapters, and the chapters are very long. She does have lots of experience in the field.
Boyd knows her stuff but she is a horrible teacher. Lectures are torture to sit through and she is not helpful at all. You are basically teaching yourself the material. If you do not do all the reading, you will not pass. My first C in college.
Professor Boyd is an excellent lawyer and one with a vibrant personality, but I cannot recommend her as a teacher. Her lectures are long, and she takes attendance before each class. All of the material on the test is in the book, and there are nearly no effective notes to be taken during her lengthy lectures.
Do not take this class. I was switched into this class at the last minute from another professor. I ended up staying in this class to fulfill a gen ed requirement. NOT AN EASY A. Beware. Online assignments due almost every Friday. Very tedious and time consuming. These are graded harshly and count as a test grade at the end of the year.
Class was web-enhanced, so there were weekly assignments due on Fridays. Tests are relatively easy if you read and review your notes. She's a kind woman who knows her stuff, even if she is scatterbrained most of the time. She tells stories from her days as a prosecutor.
Professor Boyd is very nice but her lectures are torture to sit through. They do not really help with the tests as most of the material is taken directly from the book. Read the book to pass the tests and you will do fine. As a criminology major, I enjoy this class but would not recommend it to someone just trying to fulfill a gen ed requirement.
Really nice lady. Has great stories and personal experience but I just didn't click with her teaching style and the material. To me, it seemed disorganized and confusing. I ended up with a D in the class and it's the ONLY D I've ever gotten. I'm generally an A, B student. Again, nice lady but I just didn't click with her.
Go to class, read the assignments, and study for an easy A. Very straightforward because grades come down to 4 exams. Excellent course for those who excel at test taking or any one who does not like to write essays. I do NOT recommend this class for those whom it is not their major.
Professor Boyd is awesome. She used to be a prosecutor & has many interesting stories that make class fun. She can get off topic easily, but if you pay attention, take notes, & read the book, it is an easy A. In this class we had many case briefs or questions to answer on old significant cases as well as a couple tests. Overall, great class!
I took this class as a study abroad option a couple years ago. In addition to being scatter brained, Boyd cannot plan a trip. Period. She has no idea what she's doing, and the rest of us suffered for it. I'm sure she was a sensible prosecutor, but for the sake of your sanity, don't ever do a study abroad with her.
After 1 full week of classes, we were supposed to have read over 100 pages for American Gov. As a little freshman, I was overwhelmed. Aside from the bulk work assigned, I quite enjoyed my class with Boyd. She's funny, quirky, and a bit spontaneous. Never fell asleep or got bored in the class.
Very influential on my life. Will never forget what she taught me about life and learning
Got stuck w/ Boyd for several courses. Interrupts herself, gives 40 min lecture without ever finishing ONE of her sentences. I had absolutely NO salvageable notes. Exams do not correspond with lectures or book. Doesn't follow syllabus. Next exam was in 2 days, I asked her what to study, she laughed & said "You don't wanna know" & dismissed class.
She's late to class every day.
This would be the CRM class to take! Boyd does talk a lot, but it is the use of real life examples related towards the topic. This really does help get the text across. Take notes of the PP and what she says to help study wise. Everything she says is in the book, but still READ THE BOOK! The only grades are from the exams, so make them count.
She is a very good professor. She does lecture every class, but most of the time it is about her experiences so it helps you understand the textbook better. You have to read the textbook. The only grades were the 4 tests, however, she offers like two things of extra credit.
Interesting lecture. But not exactly helpful. Got a poor grade on the first exam because what she covers in class is about 30% of the exams. Everything else you have to read on your own. And there's only 4 tests I think, and that's all she grades. I've already messed up one so the others have to be great or I won't have a decent grade.
She's an interesting & fair professor, but extremely disorganized and unstructured. Lectures are random and don't always cover the readings. You pretty much have to read everything in the book to learn the material, and a lot of it doesn't make it on the exam. Powerpoints used sometimes, other times she just speaks for half the class.
Prof. Boyd is the BEST professor at UNCW, no contest. Her class is always extremely interesting, made even better by her supplementing the course material with her own personal experience with the criminal justice system as an attorney. If I could take her class again a million times I would. Prof. Boyd is who I want to be when I grow up.
Aviod, avoid, avoid. Offers no assistance in preparation for tests. Crm 101 had to much material for an intro course. Offered us extra credit because everyone was failing. But she assisned it during final exams. Good luck if you take her.
The only reason you need the book is because she doesn't actually lecture from the book, but test on it. She is a fun and energetic teacher and I love her class, she loves when you don't agree with her on something, and she is really a relatable teacher.
Prof. Boyd is a lecturer that includes the information, but also her personal experience within the criminal justice system. She is entertaining and although, attendance is big, she is considerate and definitely one I look forward to seeing every week!
I really enjoyed Professor Boyd! I like her sense of humor, but this is an independent study class. As long as you do the readings and study the cases she goes over in class you'll do fine on the exams. There isn't too much work involved other than that. So if you're looking for a laid back class that is mostly independent study this is it.
You have 4 grades to determine your final grade and she gives hardly any notes. Worst professor at UNCW
Loved this class (CRM105) !! She has a ton of experience as she has practiced law in three states and has been a prosecutor. She gives single word bullet points on her slides so you HAVE to be in class to get the verbal notes. Also, read the book as it covers some stuff she doesn't in class. Overall, I highly recommend her.
Ms. Boyd is an amazing teacher! She is a former prosecutor therefore her lectures are extremely interesting. She is very lecture heavy therefore if you miss class you will fail. Only 4 tests and no assignments. Although if you take notes AND read, you will be fine. I can't wait to take her again!
The only good thing about this professor is that she is nice. This class was composed of 4 tests and that was our whole grade. She expects you to read the book, and doesnt even go over that material in lecture. Most of her tests came from little things in the book. I did better in Anatomy than in this class. I would not recommend her!!
Professor Boyd is one of the hardest professors for a University Studies class I have taken at UNCW. She expects you to read the book before every test, when she doesnt even go over half of the material in lecture. She would pick out things in the book that no one would pay attention to. Do not take her if your looking for an easy A.
Babbling Babette Boyd should be her name since that is all she does in her classes. She hardly ever actually lectures about the material and talks about random stuff all class long. She basically expects you to teach yourself and doesn't actually prepare you for the tests, which are the only grades in her class. Such an annoying professor.
She is awesome! She only gives out 4 test and that makes up your whole grade. She has office hours and I would take advantage of them. Make sure you read the textbook before and after class. She gives a lot of personal experience because she is an attorney herself. She takes attendance and if you miss more than a 3 classes your grade goes down.
Professor Boyd is a hilarious woman, she is also very inspirational in her classes. She uses stories as examples, so reading the book is the best way to pass the exams. She is an awesome and genuine teacher, I am trying to take any classes that she teaches.
This is an independent study class. Her lectures are just her talking about her personal experiences relating to the material. The only way to pass the test (4 tests total) is to read the book yourself. She never stuck to the syllabus and got through only part of the material. She is very outgoing though
DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. Disorganized. RAMBLES ABOUT NOTHING. Two minutes late for class? ABSENT; counts against grade. You have to read/teach the material yourself; read EVERY SINGLE ASPECT in each chapter. Takes forever to grade and you can forget about getting a reply for an email. Thinks she's funny, but she's actually a clown. HARD NO FROM ME DOG.
Don't let these other comments fool you. Do yourself a favor and save your dignity, soul, and mental stability. Don't waste your time. I wish I would dropped the first day. Honestly do not understand how she made it through law school. She's a joke as a person and a professor. You have to read everything until you're dreaming about criminal law.
Very tough. Everything my friends and I submitted received the comment "You are being too vague" even after following the feedback she gave us. It is surprising because she is so nice and funny. The textbook can be found online free so don't buy it unless you want a physical copy. Overall wouldn't take if you're wanting a good grade
Professor Boyd is hilarious and she makes lectures really interesting. I don't really get the bad reviews but it could be that I had an easier class with her. The class only consists of 3-4 tests and if you come to class and pay attention, you'll do fine. You are supposed to read the textbook but I didn't, paid attention, and did well.
Dr. Boyd is a super amazing professor! I have taken her courts class and she was so inspiring and made me want to become an attorney. Although there is a lot of information to memorize, it is easy to do so because Dr. Boyd is such a great teacher. The lectures are really fun, and I looked forward to them every week. I wish I could take her again.
Criminal Law-Professor Boyd truly cares about her students. She is in her office or there to answer emails anytime you need. She is a difficult professor and believes As are only for excellence. If you show that you care about the class and try, you should do well. She is flexible and tries her best to accommodate students. Great online transition!
Pretty standard online class, you don't really have to read the textbook, but it was helpful. Tests were pretty easy as well
I absolutely love Prof. Boyd. She's extremely passionate about criminal justice, and her humor makes the class enjoyable. The class mostly consists of lectures which don't exactly match up with the textbook, so it's important to read that and take notes. The tests use the exact textbook definition. She's also super caring and patient.
This teacher makes class really fun and she has a lot of experience since she is an attorney. She talks a lot about her personal experience. She'll even go over everything you need to know for the test in class if you ask. The tests are a little difficult and they pretty much determine your grade. There are almost no assignments besides a few tests
This class is very lecture heavy and graded by three tests only, maybe an extra small paper if you're lucky. She's a great professor and very knowledgeable. You need to read the textbook and even then the tests are difficult. They are always a short amount of time with more questions than minutes (no lockdown browsers though).
While I thoroughly enjoyed having Prof Boyd for this class, I would not retake the class itself. It is a lot of reading and analyses, not to mention the weighting of the exams is insane. However, I would love to have Prof Boyd again in the future.
Love professor Boyd but the intro class was hard. Had to memorize a lot. And the exams were hard.
Please dont let these harsh comments scare you away from Prof Boyd. She is 10/10 the best prof I have had at UNCW so far, especially in the CRM program. She cares about all of her students dearly and their success. Her lectures are fun, shes so smart, and she is always willing to help. Classes can be difficult, but if you try youll be fine.
shes a nice lady but horrible professor theres only 3 tests and absolutely none of it is covered in her lectures she rambles about her life and never teaches anything
Absolutely loved Professor Boyd. The tests are hard and all about the textbook + cases and she has powerpoint heavy lectures that don't always help. She goes off on tangents but has a lot of law knowledge and a million stories to relate to the subjects. Wish I needed more classes that she was teaching because I would love to learn more from her!!!
I absolutely loved Professor Boyd! She was so funny and often told us stories of her experiences in her field. Exams are directly off of the textbook, however. But I wish she taught classes in my major.
Didn't follow my disability accommodations and got nasty when the DRC got involved
Professor Boyd was a very great professor as she is extremely knowledgeable from having so much experience in the court room. Her stories are very interesting but do not have much to do on the tests at all. She assigns 3 assignments and 3 quizzes throughout the whole semester the quizzes are very difficult which makes it very hard to get an A.
Excellent professor. I took her (trial) race & voting class during my fall semester and loved her teaching style so much I took another class with her as the instructor. Amount of experience in the field not only admirable, but makes her a great professor. Never fails to bring a real life experience to help students understand subject matter.
I really enjoyed her criminal courts class she really cares about her students and brings personal experiences into her lectures. Exams are extremely hard and in person, but I would really recommend her classes.
Professor Boyd is hilarious and a nice person. This class is heavily based on tests and 3 assignments you will not get 100% on. Her aid grades them all. She is late to put in grades. Don't forget to read the book or you will not do well on the tests. She focuses a lot on cases in the tests so know the details.
There are only 3 exams and 3 assignments throughout the entire semester so 6 grades total. Her exams are extremely hard. They are all on paper and about 60 questions in just over 60 minutes. The first exam class average was 66 and the 2nd was 73. She lectures the entire class off of powerpoint. She also tells lots of stories unrelated to the exams.
Very lecture-heavy class, and if you don't read the textbook you will not do good on the tests. She makes it very clear that she does not do extra credit and often goes off-topic during lectures. I would not recommend this class to anyone, especially any freshman. Extremely unnecessary for being an introductory class.
Dr Boyd AFN 220 class was great! You will learn a lot and the topics are very challenging which I love. I really wish the lectures were more focused though.
She is a nice person and I did enjoy her lectures but for a 105 intro class, it was made hard for no reason. I would pay attention/take detailed notes and read the book and still get a C or lower on the tests. There are 3 small assignments and attendance that make up the rest of your grade which she offers no rubric for any assignment. Don't take.
Babbling Babette. She will babble. But amazing person and very smart. Hilarious professor. I rec her class but don't buy textbook you won't use it ever. You talk and review the Central Park 5 case so DO buy that book.
Ms. Boyd is a great professor and very knowledgeable about criminal law. Her lectures are engaging, includes class discussion, and she is hilarious! Her tests are pretty hard and you have to study a lot, pay attention in class, and read the textbook. You only have homework once a week which is a case brief which is time-consuming and a little hard.
Prof. Boyd is both an amazing professor and conversationalist. Her fight for black votership class was very insightful, educational, and very conversation heavy. We did have homework and exams/tests but if you do the assigned reading you will pass in flying colors. It is a pleasure to have taken her course and I greatly recommend her to everyone.
Prof. Boyd's class is tough, but engaging. The exams are challenging, so staying on top of the textbook and lectures is key. Unstuckstudy was super helpful for practice questions and studying. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
I like her, she is clearly knowledgable. But she can ramble. I find it hard to follow in lectures, I feel lost most times. But for exams, I literally just skimmed thru the textbook and paid attention to things she would EMPHASIZE in class; I got 95's and above. Otherwise, I find her humorous and if you talk to her you can tell she really cares.
Grades with exams + little reflection assignments. There's no point in reading the entire textbook; all the material on exams comes from the "Chapter Review" pages at the end of each chapter.
funny but yaps a lot, her slides are not really helpful, but what she said in class u might wanna pay attention to.
The class itself was okay but thats bc of the subject matter. I actually liked going to this class even though it was a long lecture every time. She has experience in the field she is teaching so she always has stories to tell which keeps class really interesting. She also prompts us to give anwers and think which is cool. shes also sweet and funny
Prof. Boyd is one of the best professors I have taken. Her classes are filled with insightful discussion where the whole class gets involved. Her exams are more on the difficult side and she is a slightly harsh grader, make sure you give plenty of detail and have correct grammar. Overall, I truly enjoyed her class and I would highly recommend her.
There was not a lot of assignments. No tests at all, 10 quizzes total, each 50 questions. Every Sunday there was 1 assignment due. The part that was super tough was the reading every week and writing about the Central Park Five, took a very long time, and accused me of using ai once.
